A Syrian Catholic priest has been beheaded by jihadist fighters in Syria, it has been claimed.

The death of Franciscan Father Francois Murad has been confirmed by the official Vatican news agency.

The gruesome killing has raised further concerns about the West arming rebels in the fight against the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Grainy footage purported to show the 49-year-old’s death has been posted on the internet.

Father Francois, was killed on 23 June in Gassanieh, in northern Syria.

He had been staying in the convent of the Custody of the Holy Land.

Catholic.org linked to the video and reported: ‘Syrian terrorists have beheaded a Catholic priest who they accused of collaborating with the Assad regime. Those accusations have not yet been verified.’

Fides News Agency said: ‘According to local sources, the monastery where Fr. Murad was staying was attacked by militants linked to the jihadi group Jabhat al-Nusra.’

Jabhat al-Nusra, also known as the Front for the Protection of the Syrian People, is an Al Qaeda associated group, described as ‘the most aggressive and successful arm of the rebel force.’

In the video, filmed on a camera phone and posted on LiveLeak, three men – including a man reported to be Father Francois – are seen sitting on the dusty ground as a crowd around them cheers.

Wednesday June 26, 2013

Clashes broke out in the legislature yesterday as ruling party and opposition lawmakers pushed and shoved to take over the podium during the last day of the extra legislative session.

A male lawmaker complained of being bitten by a female colleague, while another female lawmaker screamed as she was frog-marched from the podium by a male opponent. Several legislators also had coffee sprayed on their faces during a scuffle.

The podium was first occupied by Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) lawmakers, who were instructed by the party on Monday night to assemble outside the legislative chamber before 6:30am. When Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and Taiwan Solidarity Union (TSU) lawmakers arrived soon after, fighting broke out.

Running out of the legislative hall in tears, KMT Legislator Wang Huei-mei (王惠美) told reporters she could not believe it when DPP Legislator Pasuya Yao (姚文智) grabbed her hands from behind and dragged her away from the podium.

“It’s the last day of the extra legislative session. What I was asking was that we should begin reviewing bills. Why did he attack a woman?” Wang asked.

Yao said he was trying to tell Wang not to jostle for space with DPP Legislator Hsu Chih-chieh (許智傑), who was already on the podium.

KMT Legislator Wu Yu-jen (吳育仁) showed reporters a bite mark on his upper left arm, accusing DPP Legislator Lin Shu-fen (林淑芬) of biting him when she rushed into the chamber and saw him standing on the podium.

“I didn’t feel pain at first, but it began to hurt an hour or two later. I think she bit me really hard,” Wu said.

Wu later posted a message on his Facebook page saying that he had taken a doctor’s advice and received a tetanus shot to prevent possible infection.

In response, Lin accused Wu of pressing his body against her and scratching her frantically.

“I bit him because he touched my breasts,” Lin said.

Lin apologized to DPP legislators Ho Hsin-chun (何欣純) and Hsueh Ling (薛凌) and to KMT Legislator Hsieh Kuo-liang (謝國樑) for accidentally spraying them with water and coffee during the confrontation. She refused to apologize to Wu.

“Why should I apologize to someone who touched my breasts?” Lin said.

Several DPP lawmakers also demanded that Wu apologize to Lin.

Later last night, Wu denied that he deliberately touched Lin’s breasts, but added that if she felt uncomfortable about the incident, he was willing to apologize.

KMT Legislator Ma Wen-Chun (馬文君) also wrestled with Lin in a separate clash.

In another round of fighting, DPP Legislator Chen Ting-fei (陳亭妃) was bundled into the back of KMT Legislator Chen Shu-hui (陳淑慧) and pulled out some of the latter’s hair.

KMT Legislator Huang Chao-shun (黃昭順) checked into a hospital, saying she injured her back after she was pushed to the ground and could barely stand up.

The KMT occupied the podium to ensure the passage of a number of controversial bills, while the DPP and the TSU staged a boycott to protest the signing of a cross-strait service trade agreement om Friday last week in Shanghai.

Lawmakers managed to reach a consensus on how to handle the controversial issues at 12:45pm, bringing the nearly six-hour long deadlock to an end.

Miss USA Contestants

Sunday June 16, 2013

A field of 51 beauty queens from every U.S. state and the District of Columbia are set to compete for the 62nd Miss USA title Sunday.

The contestants will strut across the stage at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip.

The woman crowned the 2013 Miss USA winner will replace reigning queen Nana Meriwether and go on to compete in the Miss Universe pageant.

The night’s winner also becomes a spokeswoman for breast and ovarian cancer awareness and other causes, while traveling to promote the organization.

The beauty queens will battle it out in three competitions: swimsuit, evening gown and interview question.

Contestants will be whittled to 15 following the show’s opening number, in which the beauty queens introduce themselves one-by-one.

Most of the competitors will be quickly sent home. The top 16 were picked by preliminary judges through competitions and interviews during the week before the telecast.

Celebrity judges including fashion designer Betsey Johnson, “Biggest Loser” star Bob Harper and “Wait Wait … Don’t Tell Me” personality Mo Rocca will then pick the top eight after the swimsuit competition. The judge panel will narrow it down to a top 4 after the evening gown portion.

Like many Chicago area hockey fans, Frank Miller wanted to show his support for the home team on its run to the Stanley Cup Final. But Miller, a diehard Blackhawks fan from the suburb of Park Ridge, didn’t think a playoff beard was enough.

So he decided to grow a playoff lawn.

It’s exactly what it sounds like. Basically, he just didn’t cut his lawn. Sure, it was a terrible eyesore, but Miller put up a sign to explain himself: “PLAYOFF LAWN”, it read, “Won’t cut until Hawks win the Cup!”

According to Miller, people were into it, honking their cars as they drove by and, on some occasions, even stopping to take a picture for some reason.

But others were not so pleased with Miller’s lawn looking like a marijuana grow operation.

And one night, the unthinkable happened: The city cut it, like a snake in the, uh, grass.

From NBC Chicago:

But at some point the city of Park Ridge — and perhaps some of his neighbors — decided they weren’t as impressed with Miller’s display of Hawks loyalty. And that’s when someone paid him a visit last month.

“I was watching the playoffs one night with my son and hear a lawn mower going off, and I come outside, ‘What are you doing?’ The guy was cutting my lawn with a giant industrial-sized mower, and he said that the city had come and paid him to cut my lawn,” Miller said.

This is shocking: if you don’t mow your lawn, the city will do it for you?

Into the trash you go, lawnmower.

Don’t cry for Miller’s playoff grass. When the lawn assassin left, Miller simply recommitted himself to the playoff lawn. He hasn’t cut it since. (Frankly, now that he knows the city will eventually get fed up with him and send someone else out to do it, I wouldn’t be surprised if he never cuts it again.)

But, considering it’s bad luck to shave a playoff beard once you’ve started growing it, if the Blackhawks suddenly find themselves unable to play their game versus Boston, don’t blame Zdeno Chara and Tuukka Rask: Blame the city and citizens of Park Ridge and their shameless, slavish obsession with curb appeal.

A homeless Chicago woman who has been arrested 396 times in the past 35 years has been ordered by a judge to get mental health and substance abuse treatment.

Shermain Miles, 51, appeared in a Cook County court on Monday, accused of attacking a city alderman. She pleaded guilty to trespassing and public drinking in separate cases.

Judge Peggy Chiampas sentenced Miles to time served after she agreed to undergo a mental health evaluation and get follow-up treatment, The Chicago Sun-Times ( http://bit.ly/13zt6Yl ) reported. Miles has been held at the Logan Correctional Center in Lincoln, 65 miles west of Champaign, since December for violating parole.

“All of us are reaching out to you and offering you, maybe for the first time in your life, a hand, OK?” Chiampas told Miles. “But you’ve got to reach out and grab all of our hands as well.”

Miles, who has dozens of convictions for felonies and misdemeanors, thanked the judge for her help.

Miles has been arrested 65 times for disorderly conduct and has used at least 83 different aliases. She’s well known among merchants and residents in several North Side neighborhoods, including one florist who called police about her 25 times last summer.

Anyone in Texas knows you must always remember the Alamo. It would also be advised that you always remember to delete the nude photos you took of yourself and then sent to a man who isn’t your husband – just ask Melinda Navarro, the Executive Administrator at the Alamo Mission in San Antonio.

Navarro currently is engaged in a bitter divorce with her soon-to-be ex-husband, Larry Navarro, who is taking bitter to some rather staggering levels.

After discovering nude photos his wife had taken of herself and then sent to another man, Mr. Navarro reportedly went ahead and forwarded the images to his wife’s friends, work colleagues, her parents and even the couple’s 16-year-old daughter.

The existence of the photos was revealed in divorce proceedings earlier this week when Mr. Navarro filed a motion to examine a laptop computer and to hear testimony from the man he believes received the risque photos – as well as sexually charged text messages – from his wife.

As a public employee making $85,000 a year, Ms. Navarro has admitted to sending the photos and texts via-a cell phone used for both personal and Alamo business, according to the San Antonio Express-News. However, she denies ever having an affair.

In a 39-page child custody investigation report for the couple’s two teenage children – first published by a Texas blogger – the author notes that ‘Ms. Navarro stated that around her anniversary last year there had been an argument… and Larry had taken her phone, found some texts and photos that she had sent to a man, and forwarded a number of the personal photos to her parents, daughter, co-workers, and social circle.’

The report goes on to say that ‘she stated that her co-workers were obviously uncomfortable the next day and finally a man showed her a nude photo with the caption, “Look what het (sic) Alamo is paying for!” When she learned of Navarro’s action, she separated from him on September 17, 2012, and filed for divorce two days later.’

Ms. Navarro’s sexting is just the latest black-eye for the Alamo – and the organization of women that has been tasked with maintaining it for the last 108 years.

Ms. Navarro is a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, a group of Texas women that – until recently – has been in charge of overseeing several Texas landmarks, including the Alamo, the Shrine of Texas Freedom and the French Legation Embassy.

The group has become controversial in recent years and has garnered a slue of bad press – so bad, in fact, that the Texas Legislature stripped it of its duties of maintaining the historic landmark last year – a duty with which it has been entrusted since 1905.

But group still maintains the Alamo – it does so, however, as state contractor under the Texas General Land Office, which appoints an executive administrator.

Navarro fell into her current position after the appointed executive administrator resigned last year after just five months on the job and was never replaced.

The Daughters of the Republic of Texas’ contract with the state ends this month, but that hasn’t stopped several people – including state legislators and members if the Daughters of the Republic of Texas – from calling on Navarro to resign.

‘I have repeatedly asked for a strong state presence at the Alamo, and this new information does not add confidence to the management,” Texas state Senator Leticia Van de Putte told the San Antonio Express-News.

Former DRT member Sarah Reveley, who was booted from the group after complaining to the Texas Attorney General’s Office about how poorly the group was taking care of the Alamo, thinks it’s time for Navarro to go.

“Divorces should be private business, but her key $85,000-a-year position at the Alamo makes her a public figure,” Reveley posted on her Facebook page.

The man who admitted he beat a German shepherd with a bat and left it to die in a Kitsilano dumpster was suffering from mental illness and does not deserve to go to jail, his lawyer has told a Vancouver court.

The sentencing hearing for Brian Whitlock, 26, began this morning with shocking testimony from Crown prosecutors detailing how Whitlock beat the dog named Captain with a baseball bat after he became afraid of it.

Whitlock pleaded guilty to animal cruelty in April after two-year-old Captain was found in a dumpster wrapped in a bloody blanket, emaciated, stabbed, cut and brutally beaten in July 2012. The dog died a short time later despite the SPCA’s attempts to save its life.

A search of Whitlock’s apartment a month after Captain’s death turned up a bloody bat with the dog’s DNA on it, plus a heavy chain and walking stick.

Captain’s death sparked outrage in the community from protesters who demanded tougher animal protection laws.

Prosecutors detail attack with bat

On Tuesday morning the court heard how, when Whitlock bought Captain just a few months before the incident, he was in the middle of a tense separation from his wife and fighting over visitation rights to their toddler.

The Crown also said Whitlock told the RCMP he became scared of the dog and locked it in a room before hitting it three times with the bat in an attempt to break its neck.

Whitlock told police he believed a neighbor had poisoned the dog and he thought he killed it as humanely as possible before leaving it in the dumpster.

The account of the death drew gasps and tears in the courtroom from the protesters who have been attending the trial.

Crown prosecutors spent 15 minutes describing the injuries sustained by the dog, noting it was also emaciated and starving when it was found.

Whitlock said he feared the public would lash out at him after he was publicly identified as the dog’s owner. He said he should have taken the dog to the SPCA, but felt it was his responsibility to take care of the problem.

The Crown is seeking a four- to six-month jail sentence, three years probation and a lifetime ban on owning animals for Whitlock.

Defence blames mental illness

On Tuesday afternoon at the hearing, Whitlock’s lawyer spoke in his defence, saying his client deserves no jail time because it was his mental illness that led to the killing of the dog.

The court heard how Whitlock, who once competed nationally as a rower, saw his life go downhill when his father announced in 2009 he had been cheating for 15 years, leading his parents to divorce.

The night after he tried to kill his dog, Whitlock slept on his grandmother’s porch in Richmond before spending the rest of the week sleeping in the forest.

He then admitted himself to a Vancouver psychiatric ward on July 31, and again later in the summer when he became suicidal. By September, he was diagnosed with schizophrenia.

During the defence lawyer’s sentencing arguments, the judge interjected to say the community reaction to Whitlock has been “disgusting, abhorrent and unfortunate,” and that people wanting to take the law into their own hands should know better.

The hearing wrapped up Tuesday afternoon. Sentencing is set for June 12.

An American engineer and entrepreneur whose inability to leave China for the last five years has been a low-grade irritant for U.S.-Chinese relations was allowed to return home to Los Angeles on Monday, according to his family.

Coming just days before a high-profile summit between President Xi Jinping and President Obama at a California desert retreat, the government’s decision to allow the engineer, Hu Zhicheng, to leave China suggests that Beijing may be seeking to start the two days of talks on a positive note.

Other than a call from a relative in China saying he was on a Los Angeles-bound plane, Mr. Hu’s, wife, Hong Li, said she had no advance notice that her husband would be coming home.

“We are so happy right now,” she said by phone. “My son picked him up and ran around in circles. The last time he saw his father he was 13. Now he’s five years older, and a foot taller.”

She said her husband was sleeping and that she did not want to wake him.

A Chinese-born inventor trained at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Mr. Hu had in recent years been trapped in a bizarre limbo after angering a well-connected business associate who apparently used his influence to prevent him from passing through China’s stringent border-exit controls.

In 2008, he was imprisoned for 17 months on commercial theft charges that even Chinese prosecutors said were unfounded. After his release, however, he was repeatedly blocked from leaving China by immigration agents who claimed he was a wanted man. His suspicions aside, Mr. Hu said he was never able to find out who wanted him. “I think the goal is to make me suffer, and keep me apart from my family,” he said in a 2011 interview.

A well-regarded inventor with 48 patents to his name, Mr. Hu has been a pioneer in automobile emission control technology. After two decades working abroad, he returned to China in 2004 to start a company that provides catalytic converters to the country’s booming auto industry. The company has grown so successful that it now outfits roughly half of China’s domestically manufactured cars.

His problems began, he said, after he refused to buy what he said were inferior components from a company whose politically connected executive would not take no for an answer.

John Kamm, executive director of Dui Hua Foundation, an American organization that advocates on behalf of political prisoners in China, said he was encouraged by the departure of Mr. Hu, whose inability to leave despite the absence of legal charges against him had frustrated human rights advocates and American diplomats.

Even if the case was easy for Chinese authorities to solve – Mr. Hu, after all, was never convicted of a crime – Mr. Kamm said the timing of its resolution suggested that China’s new president may be willing to clear up several nettlesome human rights cases, especially those involving American citizens, as the two countries grapple with contentious issues like North Korea and allegations of Chinese cyber hacking. Top on the list is Xue Feng, a Chinese-American geologist who is serving eight years in prison on commercial theft charges that many legal experts say are spurious.

“The case of Hu Zhicheng has been hanging over everyone’s head for a long time,” Mr. Kamm said. “Perhaps I’m too optimistic, but it may signal that Xi Jinping could be willing to move forward on other, more sensitive cases.”

Mr. Kamm and others credited Mr. Hu’s daughter, Victoria, a student at the University of California, Berkeley, for using social media to bring attention to her father’s plight. A petition campaign she launched in 2011 yielded more than 60,000 signatures; on Tuesday, she celebrated his return with a posting on Facebook that drew hundreds of likes. “After 5 years, my dad is finally home!!” she wrote. “Watching him walk around trying to find the chopsticks is the best feeling ever.”

A Bronx DJ known as DJ Tech Trackz dropped his iPhone on the subway tracks early morning, Saturday, June 1, 2013. He was electrocuted after he was too impatient to let a worker retrieve it for him, and then he was hit by a train and killed. His real name was Francisco Diego, Jr. -- Facebook

SUNDAY JUNE 2, 2013         1:28 AM

A Bronx deejay who busted out beats under the name “Tech Trackz” died on a stretch of city subway tracks Saturday morning as he tried to retrieve an iPhone he had dropped, officials said.

Police sources said Francisco Diego Jr., 22, was shocked and then hit by a No. 2 train at the Wakefield-241st St. station — the last stop on the line — just after 1 a.m.

Sources said Diego told a token booth clerk he had dropped his smart phone on the tracks. After the train entered the station he managed to get between two train cars and jumped onto the tracks. He was electrocuted when he touched the third rail, sources said.

Diego fell onto the tracks, where the train hit him as it rumbled out of the station to be serviced.

Paramedics rushed the tragically injured Diego to Jacobi Medical Center, but he could not be saved.

The always-smiling spin master had just worked a Memorial Day bash at Maximo’s Place, a Bronx nightclub where he often hosted dance parties, according to his Facebook page.

His grief-stricken mother choked back tears as she declined to talk about her son.

Heartbroken friends stood outside Diego’s Fox St. home, where a makeshift memorial had been erected. They were in disbelief that Tech Trackz would do something so risky for something so replaceable.

“He’s not the type to jump into the subway to get it,” said friend Kevin Atterbury, 16. “He would just go get a new one. That’s why this is so shocking.”

But family members said Diego had ventured onto the tracks in the past.

“He’s done it before, which is why he tried to do it again,” said Diego’s sister Nandy, 19. “But this time it wasn’t successful. I feel like my heart has been ripped out.”

“He said he was going to see me the next day,” said teary friend Jeannine Vargas, 19. “He was super friendly. He always had a smile on his face.”

Diego was the second person to be killed on the No. 2 line in a 24-hour period. A man trying to cross the tracks at the E. 174th St. station was hit by a northbound No. 2 train and was pinned between the train and the platform about 2:15 a.m. Friday morning, police said. He was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital, but he could not be saved.

You’ve seen a lot of alley-oops from Chris Paul to Blake Griffin over the last two seasons, but unless you’re a Lakers fan, you’re probably not sick of them. We’re to the point where it’s not a highlight every time these guys combine for a sick alley-oop, but this one is pretty great, even by their standards.

By the way, Griffin appeared to be okay after this dunk, even though he went down hard.

A 37 year old mom in North Carolina discovered her son had allegedly taken her box of Pop-Tarts and called the police. News 13 of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina reports today that Latasha Renee Love, of Charlotte, N.C. accused her son, who she says has had discipline problems, of stealing the Pop-Tarts. The story reports the police valued the Pop-Tarts at $5 and charged Love’s son with misdemeanor larceny. The case will reportedly be adjudicated in juvenile court. Another story on this incident from Bossip.com reports the son is 13 years old.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg policie justified the arrest of the 13 year old boy, as reported today by the Charlotte Observer via their web site, “I see a lot of parents who have a problem with their children,” said CMPD detective Keith Way. “It becomes really desperate. The totality of the circumstances and I think at that particular time that was the best choice that was made.”

The story notes that completing the program under the juvenile court will mean the boy will not have a permanent criminal record. The program is one for juvenile offenders, from ages six to 16, that the story refers to as the “Diversion Court Program” for child discipline cases.

A 20-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly backing her pickup truck over a mother and two children who were asleep in a tent at a campsite in northeastern B.C.

The incident began early Monday morning during an argument between the woman and her boyfriend at the off-road campsite near Tumbler Ridge, according to Cpl. Dan Moskaluk.

‘I sat up and I seen the lights of the back of the truck, and I heard the truck accelerate.’—Shyane Cooper

“In an attempt to leave the area, the female is alleged to have backed a pickup truck over the tent and its sleeping occupants,” said Moskaluk.

Inside the tent, Shyane Cooper, 20, saw the lights of the truck coming toward her and her two young boys sleeping beside her.

“I sat up and I seen the lights of the back of the truck and I heard the truck accelerate,” she told CBC News.

Pinned under the truck

Cooper managed to push the children out of the way, but ended up getting pinned by the truck herself.

tumbler ridge b.c.

“My boyfriend was trying to pull me out from under it, but I was completely stuck. He had to get someone to jump back in the truck and take it off of me,” she said.

Cooper suffered several broken bones, including some in her face. She was rushed to the local health-care centre and then transferred to the Dawson Creek Hospital, where she is recovering in stable condition.

Her three-year-old boy required stitches to the back of his head, but her 18-month-old boy escaped uninjured.

The driver was arrested shortly afterward and is co-operating with police. She could face a charge of dangerous driving, said Moskaluk.

Death threats against the driver through social media are complicating the investigation, however, and police are warning people to stop.

“These people who make these types of threats themselves could look at facing criminal charges themselves.” said Moskaluk.

Kree Harrison isn’t letting her “American Idol”loss to Candice Glover get her down. In fact, she’s got some big plans for the future — plans that might even involve departing judge and “Idol” vet Randy Jackson.

“It was sad. We’ll see each other. I know we will,” the 22-year-old Texas native told MTV News after Thursday night’s “Idol” season finale. “I love him and apparently we have a mutual friend, which I didn’t even know until the other day. And, so I would love to work with him in the future. I adore him.”

She added that her song, “All Cried Out,” which she performed during the season, is a pretty good indicator of what’s next for her. She explained, “I would want that to be my single, either way. I hope [to debut new music on the road]. Stay tuned.”

The 40-date “Idol” tour will kick off in St. Louis at the end of June, and Harrison is looking forward to performing for the fans who helped her get all the way to the finale. “I get to travel the country and thank each and every one of them for voting for me and getting me this far,” she said. “As many hugs as I can possible give, I will.”

This year’s “Idol” finale was characteristically action-packed and drama-filled. Before Candice was crowned the winner, there was one show-stopping performance after another, including a team-up between the two finalists to perform the 5th Dimension’s “One Less Bell to Answer.”

Before host Ryan Seacrest called out Candice’s name, the two women stood together, holding one another as they waited to hear who would go home a winner. And, if Kree’s big smile when Candice’s name was called is any indication, she’s pretty happy for her former competitor.

So for fans wondering what they may have talked about before the life-changing moment, Kree offered up some insight, saying that they chatted about “just how proud we were of each other; just whatever happens that we already feel like we’ve won.”

And, she sees big things for Glover. She said, “Stardom! Stardom!”

Well, if stardom is on the horizon for Glover, she certainly has put in the time. In another backstage interview, the 23-year-old vocalist recalled auditioning twice before before cracking the show’s code and going to victory this season. The “I Am Beautiful” singer is the first female winner since Jordin Sparks in 2007.

“I went through the first two years and getting eliminated and coming back,” she told MTV News. “[I’d be] telling my parents, ‘If I could just get to top 20, if I could just get to top 10, if I could just get my voice out there and get some voters and get a fanbase, then I’ll be fine. I don’t have to win.’ And then I came and I won. I can’t even tell you how I feel to say that. I don’t know. I’m losing it.”

Two elderly residents have been arrested on suspicion of using cocaine and running a prostitution ring out of their apartments at a senior citizen housing complex.

James Parham, 75, admitted providing prostitutes with crack cocaine addictions to his younger neighbors at the Vincente Tibbs Senior Citizen Building in Englewood, New Jersey, police said.

Parham and another resident, 66-year-old Cheryl Chaney, were charged with possessing drug paraphernalia and maintaining a drug nuisance. She faces a charge of possessing crack cocaine.

Police also charged 54-year-old Selma McDuffie, a school crossing guard who has now been suspended and banned from visiting the complex, with having a crack pipe.

The arrests came after many elderly residents at the home complained about drunks and addicts invading the 152-unit building. Many were fearful to leave their rooms, police said.

‘Essentially, they were prisoners in their own building,’ Chief Arthur O’Keefe of the Englewood police, told the New Jersey Record. ‘I wasn’t going to allow that to continue.’

The Englewood Housing Authority, which manages the property serving disabled and low-income residents over 62, said they carried out checks on the two residents before they moved in.

They met the income guidelines and passed a criminal background check, an official told The Record.

But the residents’ concerns sparked an undercover investigation and officials checked surveillance footage to track down the perpetrators.

The federally-funded housing agency cannot afford private security guards for the home, officials said, and instead, residents must contact police if they have any issues.

But in light of the findings – where people were afraid to leave their rooms after coming face-to-face with addicts and strangers in the hallways – police patrol the building around the clock.

O’Keefe said the police department is understaffed following injuries to several officers in recent weeks but that he has no plans to end the patrols at the Tibbs complex.

‘I’m not going to allow the seniors to fall victim again,’ he said.

Parham, who moved to the home in January 2012, scheduled to appear in Municipal Court in Englewood on Wednesday.

Chaney, who has lived there since September 2010, and McDuffie are due in court June 11. Both Parham and Chaney are in the process of being evicted from the home.

Amputee killed by dogs: An 80-year-old double amputee has been killed by dogs. Carlton Freeman succumbed to injuries he sustained in a gruesome dog attack, the Christian Today reported May 14. The elderly man was dragged from his wheelchair and attacked by four vicious dogs, authorities said Tuesday.

According to the incident report of the attack, Freeman was driving his motorized wheelchair on May 8 when he was attacked, said Maj. John Garrison, a spokesman for the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Department.

He stated that the dogs were biting him and pulling on his clothes.

Carlton Freeman, who lost both of his legs to diabetes a few years ago, was “going down the side of the road” in his wheelchair when a pack of vicious dogs started biting him, police say.

The Criminal Investigations Unit of the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the incident.

DCSO spokesperson Maj. John Garrison said deputies along with Dorchester County Animal Control were able to capture three of the dogs responsible for the amputee’s death and are still trying to find the fourth.

According to a report from the DCSO, neighbors told the police that the dogs had been “roaming around the neighborhood for months” and told deputies who they thought the owner was.

The report said deputies contacted 61-year-old Barbara Goodwin who said she owns three of the dogs – a mother and two puppies. She said she does not own the fourth dog, a male.

Deputies captured the mother and one of the puppies, all of which were found with the blood of the amputee they killed in their fur.

Update: The dogs were identified as pit bulls, family members said.

PHOTO: Employees sue Russell Stover for overtime pay.

May 11, 2013

Employees for Russell Stover Candies Inc. filed a federal wage-and-hour lawsuit against the company, saying they were intentionally mislabeled as sales representatives and none of them “has ever been paid overtime.”

Russell Stover Candies Inc., based in Missouri, employs about 5,000 people, including more than 170 sales representatives, the complaint said. The “overwhelming majority” of its candy is delivered to retailers like Walmart and grocery stores.

Nine workers said Russell Stover “misnamed them as ‘sales representatives,'” making them exempt from overtime, when none of them worked primarily in sales, as required by the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938. Most of the company’s sales are performed or originate from employees other than the plaintiffs, the court filing said.

The suit was filed on Tuesday in the U.S. District Court in Atlanta for the Northern District of Georgia.

One plaintiff, a former sales representative named Cheryl Carter, a resident of Fulton County, Ga., worked for the company from May 2005 to December 2012. During that time, her duties “primarily” involved manual labor, the suit said, and she “regularly” worked more than 40 hours each week but was never paid overtime.

The sales representatives’ duties the majority of time included receiving shipments, inspecting, unpacking, stocking, cleaning, processing credits and repairing display fixtures, according to the complaint.

Robbie Vorhaus, a spokesman for Russell Stover Candies, said the company received the complaint on Wednesday and was still reviewing it.

John Hunt, an attorney for the plaintiffs, declined to comment on their behalf.

Last June, the Supreme Court ruled in a 5-4 decision that drug companies do not have to pay sales representatives for working overtime, despite some arguments from employees that they were not actually selling medicine but promoting them to doctors.

Steven Kaminshine, dean of Georgia State University College of Law and an expert in labor and employment law, said cases claiming violation of the Fair Labor Standards Act are “very fact-dependent.”

“A common area of dispute under the Fair Labor Standards Act turns on employee status — whether it be the particular status at issue in this case, or the question of whether the individual is appropriately classified as an employee or an independent contractor, salaried employee or hourly employee,” he said. “Many of the different classifications under the FSLA are determinative of receiving the protections of the statute.”

The four former employees who are plaintiffs are residents of Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee and Florida. The five current employees who filed the suit are residents of Florida, Mississippi and Tennessee.

They claim the company “intentionally and purposefully misclassified” them as “exempt” from the Fair Labor law requirements while not paying them 1.5 times their regular rate of pay for hours over the 40-hour workweek.

The suit claims that despite working more than 40 hours a week, the company created “a fictitious ‘calculation'” on plaintiffs’ paychecks that showed they worked 40 hours a week.

A sales representative’s typical schedule included starting the day with a hand-held wireless computer to contact the company’s “host computer” to receive the day’s program updates. This process repeated again at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and at the end of the day, according to the suit.

The employee drives a company vehicle to the first store to be serviced, then clocks in before getting out of the car and removes supplies from the car to service that store. The sales representative then goes into the store, signs in at the customer service desk, later dusting, cleaning or repairing candy shelves and displays. Other duties include meeting with a store employee to determine if there is space available for new candy and signing out of the store.

The plaintiffs say the company violated the Fair Labor Standards Act for “many years and continues today.”

The experimental aircraft has a plane engine, propeller and parachute connected to a dune buggy.

May 10, 2013           3:04 PM PT

Two people have been injured after an experimental flying car crashed into a tree Friday morning near a school in Vernon, B.C.

The aircraft clipped a fence behind Vernon’s Ellison Elementary School, hit the tree and crashed a few metres from school property just before 9 a.m. PT.

Made by a Florida company, the flying car is a combination of a plane engine, propeller and parasail attached to a dune buggy.

2400 Fulton Road, Vernon, BC,

RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk said there are indications the contraption had taken off from the airport in Vernon.

“It looked like it was on its approach,” Molendyk said. “There was motor sound and people looked up and it got into trouble and came through the fence and into the trees here.”

Molendyk said the pilot and his passenger had to be pulled from the tree. They suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital. They have since been released.

No one was hurt on the ground, although children from the school were preparing on the nearby grounds for a track and field day.

It’s believed Kelowna, B.C., resident Ray Siebring recently brought the fifth-ever flying car to Canada as a prototype and has been checking it out in a series of test flights across the Okanagan.

A release from the Transportation Safety Board (TSB) confirmed the flying car was “an American corporately registered I-Tech Maverick SP Powered Parachute” that had crashed.

The vehicle, known as “Maverick,” uses a 100-metre runway to take off and flies under a parasail. But it also needs a 100-metre runway to make a safe landing.

According to the manufacturer’s website, the car can travel at speeds up to 160 kilometres per hour on land and up to 65 kilometres per hour in the air. It costs at least $94,000 to purchase, according to the site.

The TSB is now investigating.

The International Space Station is once again leaking ammonia from a cooling system, NASA said Thursday in a news release.

The crew is not in danger, NASA said.

The space station crew reported seeing small white flakes floating away from the station, the space agency said, So NASA helped locate the leak with external cameras while the crew used hand-held cameras pointed out windows.

The leak was in a cooling loop in a solar array that has leaked before. NASA said crew members tried to fix the leak in November. It is unclear whether this is the same leak or a new one.

The cooling system could shut down within 24 hours, NASA said. It is devising a plan to reroute other sources of power.

Three crew members — commander Chris Hadfield of Canada, NASA astronaut Tom Marshburn and Russian cosmonaut Roman Romanenko — are scheduled to leave the station on Monday at 7:08 p.m. ET.

Hadfield asked NASA if the leak will affect the undocking. Capsule Communicator Doug Wheelock said officials at the Mission Control Center in Houston don’t see anything that they can’t overcome technically, but they would have more information in the morning.

SOUTH Korean President Park Geun-hye has fired her spokesman over an unspecified “unsavoury” act midway through her trip to the United States this week, Yonhap news agency reports.

Senior presidential press secretary Lee Nam-ki announced Yoon Chang-jung’s dismissal, saying he was “personally involved in an unsavoury incident”, described as “an inappropriate act for a high-level official” that “hurt national dignity”.

Lee did not elaborate but said South Korea’s embassy in Washington was looking into the incident and the findings would be made public.

Yoon had returned to Seoul from Washington on Wednesday without accompanying Park on her visit to Los Angeles, the final stop of her visit to the United States, sparking speculation on why he cut his trip short, Yonhap said.

Earlier this week, Park held a summit with President Barack Obama, with the two leaders united in a vow to offer no concessions when dealing with North Korea.

Park also addressed a joint session of the US Congress, stressing that Pyongyang had to give up its nuclear weapons while also proposing small peace steps after months of sky-high tensions.

Byrne says the files about her ex-husband, documents discovered amid a massive trove of offshore financial records, point to the need for police to interview more people in the Cyr case.

May 9, 2013            2:03 AM PT

A B.C. man who vanished a decade ago in a possible underworld killing set up offshore companies and bank accounts before he went missing, and is among the 450 Canadians named in the recent massive leak of tax-haven data.

Greg Cyr’s ex-wife is now asking police to take a new look at his disappearance, after CBC News showed her secret financial documents found amid the leaked files.

Cyr, a 40-year-old drywaller, disappeared in 2003 after heading to a meeting in Vancouver with what police later told Miriam Byrne were her former husband’s “underworld connections.”

“What’s frustrating for me is it took years … years to put a picture together,” Byrne said after looking at some of the records. The files were part of an unprecedented leak of financial data obtained by the Washington-based International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and shared with the CBC and other global media outlets.

“If we would have had this…” Byrne said, pausing. “I’m speechless.”

The documents show that the year before Cyr disappeared, he set up two companies through a firm called TrustNet, which provides offshore services in the Cook Islands, a South Pacific tax haven.

Cyr used one of his companies, Sentinel Holdings, to buy a $1.5-million property on Beach Drive in Victoria. The area is an exclusive waterfront neighbourhood adjoining the Royal Victoria Yacht Club and Victoria Golf Club. But Cyr kept his ownership of the house a secret from his ex-wife, even as he did construction work on it.

“I thought it was his employer’s,” she said.

Devoted dad

By then, Byrne and Cyr were divorced, with a five-year-old son.

Byrne said their marriage ended after Cyr confessed he had shipped some marijuana from British Columbia to Whitehorse.

Cyr eventually convinced her he had straightened out, Byrne said, and he was gradually permitted more time with their son.

As a drywaller, he’d be up at dawn to head to job sites. Later, he ran a tile and wood import business. He became a devoted father who doted on their son.

“I remember him on the phone saying to me, ‘Miriam, the one thing I’ve done right in my life is be a dad,'” Byrne recalled.

Their son cherished his father’s visits. “Greg would ring the doorbell, our son would run up and next thing you know, all they did was roll around and wrestle,” Byrne said.

So it came as a shock one day in October 2003 when Cyr failed to pick their boy up from school. He has never been heard from since.

Byrne later applied to the B.C. Supreme Court to have Cyr declared dead, so she could claim a life insurance payout for their son.

The judge heard evidence that as a youth, Cyr sold drugs and associated with the Hells Angels, and that Vancouver police had told Byrne her ex-husband was murdered by associates.

Cyr’s girlfriend at the time described him in an affidavit as “frightened … like a child about to be left alone” on the day he went to the meeting from which he never returned.

If you have more information on this story, or other investigative tips to pass on, please email investigations@cbc.ca

But Judge Malcolm Macaulay rejected Byrne’s bid, finding it was equally likely that Cyr earned money through the illegal drug trade, had sizable hidden assets and was motivated to disappear.

Cyr had fled before. Born Brent Thurston, he ran from a charge of narcotics possession in Manitoba in 1988. A warrant was issued for his arrest. Cyr eventually moved to Yukon and changed his name. The warrant is still outstanding.

It was a history Cyr kept mainly hidden from Byrne until after they were married. But she never believed he could do it again.

“He would have had our son not feel like he’d lost biggest most important thing in his life,” Byrne said. “He wouldn’t do that”

TrustNet stonewalls

Armed with that conviction, Byrne appealed to TrustNet for answers. She had obtained a duffle bag of documents linking Cyr to the offshore-services firm from his girlfriend. And in January 2004, three months after Cyr vanished, Byrne picked up the phone and called the company in the Cook Islands.

“I remember it like it was yesterday. I remember my heart racing and sitting at my desk and trying to be very professional and not emotional,” she said.

Read the note in Greg Cyr’s offshore account about how his ex-wife called asking after him.

“At that point we just wanted to get any clue as to where he might have gone, what might have happened. Something.”

A record of that call is among the documents obtained by CBC News.

“Miriam Byrne called,” TrustNet employee Amanda Keu wrote in a memo in Cyr’s offshore account.

Keu noted that Byrne “appeared to be very distressed and was crying” about her missing ex-husband, who she believed was dead

“She just wanted to know if he was alive,” Keu wrote.

But Keu clung to the Cook Islands’ strict financial-secrecy laws and refused to acknowledge anything about Cyr. After hanging up, TrustNet employees tried to reach Cyr by phone and email. There is no record he ever responded.

“I remember just thinking, ‘Can someone just tell me something?'” Byrne recounted.

TrustNet continued to stonewall inquiries about Cyr four months later when a receiver in B.C. faxed and called with a court order empowering him to act on Cyr’s behalf. The employee who responded said TrustNet “did not recognize foreign judgments.”

Privately, though, the firm eventually started having concerns. Seven months after its client went missing, the company filed a report with the Cook Islands Financial Intelligence Unit, indicating Cyr might have been involved in criminal transactions or money laundering.

But TrustNet continued to frustrate the B.C. receiver. A TrustNet employee told him that “unless he was a shareholder or office holder of the company, we could not divulge any information” about the “structure of business affairs of the company”.

Secrecy for sale

In contrast, Cyr met with very little scrutiny when setting up his companies and their bank accounts.

TrustNet asked him to provide details about his business, and Cyr wrote that the purpose of Sentinel Holdings was “financing other companies and business ventures,” and that the source of his funds was an import-export business.

Cyr also had to provide a bank reference, which amounted to a form letter from his local branch of TD Canada Trust vouching for the fact that Cyr had a chequing account.

The annual fee for maintaining his offshore company was about $1,500. For that price, Cyr got secrecy. A note on his file makes it clear that “the owner, Mr. Cyr, does not want his name revealed as the beneficial owner of the company.”

“It was strictly superficial,” money-laundering investigator Gary Clement said about TrustNet’s due diligence in vetting Cyr as a client.

CBC News showed the Cyr files to Clement, who spent 30 years with the RCMP and now manages an international financial consulting firm in Ontario.

“It really enabled people like Mr. Cyr to set up businesses, set up a number of accounts using different companies without really establishing his bona fides. And that really is the case here,” Clement said.

Still listed as missing person

TrustNet eventually complied with the court order in Cyr’s case and revealed his assets, which didn’t amount to much more than the house in Victoria.

Byrne’s lawyer, Greg Harney, said he doesn’t fault TrustNet for withholding information about its clients, if all that exists are suspicions of criminality.

Cyr “was a businessman, and there were perhaps issues, and none of them were ultimately confirmed by anybody, including the police,” Harney said.

The Vancouver Police Department still lists Cyr as missing person on its website, even though in 2010 Harney was successful in getting the B.C. Supreme Court to declare Cyr dead.

The department declined to discuss the case, but Harney thinks investigators might be interested in a discovery CBC News made after examining the leaked TrustNet files.

Those documents show Cyr shared details about his secret company with a friend, Robert Chernochan. Cyr authorized Chernochan, who was a real estate agent at the time, to handle details connected with the Victoria house he bought.

Last September, Chernochan was arrested in California at a truck inspection station. He was driving a tractor-trailer north to Canada. Highway patrol officers found 66 kilograms of cocaine in a hidden compartment.

Chernochan is now in jail on narcotics trafficking charges, held on $5-million US bail. Neither he nor his lawyer responded to requests for interviews.

Clement said Chernochan is someone police should talk to.

“If I was still in law enforcement and this was my case, I definitely would make that overture to the authorities in the United States to see if we could get co-operation.”

Byrne said she recalls police telling her 10 years ago that they had tried to speak to Chernochan as part of the investigation into Cyr’s disappearance, but he proved elusive. She had no idea at the time about TrustNet, the offshore accounts it set up and Chernochan’s role in them.

“If I had this,” Byrne said, “I would have marched this down to the police to say please, please … please interview them.”

A Saskatoon woman who identifies herself as transgender says a bridal shop in the city refused to let her try on dresses as she planned her wedding.

Rohit Singh says she was looking at outfits in Jenny’s Bridal Boutique but when she asked to try one on, she was refused.

Singh said she plans to file a formal complaint about her treatment with the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission.

“It might happen to some other transgender that might come to the store and she will hurt the same,” Singh said. “It so embarrassed me and my husband.”

“Discrimination,” Singh said of the experience. “I’m damn sure it’s discrimination.”

The shop owner thought Singh was a man and felt other people in the store were uncomfortable with Singh trying on dresses.

“She said, sorry we don’t allow men to wear dresses here,” Singh recalled. “I said I’m not a man, I’m transgender.”

Singh says she has started the process for a sex change.

When contacted Thursday by CBC News, the bridal shop owner, Jenny Correia, said she stands by her decision.

“To me it doesn’t matter,” Correia said. “He looked like a man. There was quite a few brides in the store. If you see a man trying on dresses, you’re going to feel uncomfortable.”

Singh later found a red gown at My Lynh Bridal, on Idylwyld Drive North, where she described the service as excellent. Singh’s marriage took place on Monday.

Ripped apart: The couple, who were both well known in political circles in North Carolina, married in 2009

14:45 EST            24 April 2013

A political fundraiser has died and her Democratic strategist husband injured after they were brutally stabbed at their home by his best man.

Jamie Kirk Hahn, 29, died on Wednesday from injuries she suffered when she and her husband, 27-year-old Nation Hahn, were stabbed at their home in Raleigh, North Carolina on Monday night.

Jonathan Broyhill, 31, a close friend of the couple who had previously worked with Jamie and acted as Nation’s best man at their wedding, has been arrested and charged with attempted murder.

Mr Hahn, a well-known strategist in North Carolina political circles, was released from WakeMed Hospital after treatment and was seen with a bandaged arm as he went to his wife’s bedside.

On Wednesday, he wrote a string of emotional tweets to pay tribute to his young wife.

‘I have no idea what I’m going to do with @jamiehahn,’ he wrote. ‘She was my center, my rock and my soulmate… It is almost unfathomable that the sun can shine without [her] here.’

Friends told the Charlotte Observer how, on Monday nights, the three close friends would meet at the Hahn’s home for dinner, but tragedy unfolded during this week’s meet up.

An unidentified woman called 911 around 5.30pm Monday to report that Jamie was ‘bleeding terribly’ from multiple stab wounds to the abdomen as she lay in a neighbor’s yard.

‘I don’t know where she ran here from,’ the woman said, adding that many people had gathered to press towels against her stomach.

The dispatcher asked the caller who had carried out the stabbing, and a voice responded: ‘Jon Broyhill’, the Observer reported.

When police arrived on the scene, they followed a trail of blood back to Tealwood Place and found Broyhill inside the Hahns’ home, authorities said.

Broyhill was also sent to WakeMed to recover from non-life threatening injuries, which are self-inflicted, according to WNCT.

Police have charged Broyhill with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, but have not revealed a motive.

Facebook images show the close relationship the three shared – enjoying watching sports games at home and traveling abroad to share holidays.

On Wednesday, the community paid tribute to the bright, popular woman, who had set up her own business, Sky Blue Strategies, to help politicians and campaigns fundraise.

She and her husband both graduated from UNC Chapel Hill and were married in 2009.

‘Jamie lost her struggle to live this morning. We lost a beautiful and loving wife, daughter and friend. We all lost a pure and brave spirit,’ her family said in a statement early on Wednesday morning.

‘Jamie is a ray of sunshine,’ state Sen. Josh Stein, who knew all three, said. ‘She’s always smiling. She absolutely brings cheer wherever she goes, and that this has happened is tragic.’

‘As a friend, this is devastating,’ friend Gary Pearce told the Observer. ‘Nation and Jamie are the finest, kindest, gentlest and most generous people you will ever meet.’

Following the tragedy, Nation Hahn talked about his wife at Pullen Memorial.

‘She would be the first one to forgive this act of violence against her,’ he said.

According to the Observer, in 2010 Broyhill managed the field campaign for Jane Dyer, a pilot in South Carolina who was running for a U.S. congressional seat.

He also worked with former U.S. Rep. Brad Miller of Raleigh.

Nation Hahn worked on former U.S. Sen. John Edwards’ presidential campaign and has also helped as an online strategist and with mail campaigns.

Among those he’s worked with is the Coalition to Protect All N.C. Families, a campaign opposed to the state constitutional amendment that limits marriage to a union between a man and a woman.

Boston bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev managed to say just one word to a federal judge when charges were filed against him in a makeshift courtroom held at the side of his hospital bed, “No.”

No, he could not afford an attorney.

As a result, Tsarnaev, 19, who is facing the possibility of the death penalty for his alleged role in last week’s terror attack, will be represented by one of the most experienced and well respected public defenders in the country, Miriam Conrad.

Conrad heads the Federal Public Defender Office in Boston and her resume includes defending “shoe bomber” Richard Reid in 2001 for trying to blow up a Paris to Miami jetliner.

“She is excellent, tough, tenacious and wise,” said Tamar R. Birckhead, now a University of North Carolina law professor who worked with Conrad for four years, including on the Reid case.

Tsarnaev is charged with detonating a weapon of mass destruction and maliciously destroying public property, capital offenses that carry the death penalty. He is currently in the hospital being treated for wounds sustained in a shootout with police last week prior to his capture.

Conrad and several other attorneys from her office were listed in court documents as the team representing Tsarnaev. Among them was William S. Fick, who was present at Monday’s hearing held inside Tsarnaev’s hospital room. Fick requested additional help from attorneys who have previously handled death penalty cases, a requirement under federal law.

Conrad and her team have a difficult case ahead of them. They are trying to keep alive someone many would consider to be the most hated man in America. Their client is bedridden and barely able to communicate. Facing budget cuts as a result of the federal sequester, they are up against the U.S. Attorney and FBI that have made Tsarnaev’s prosecution a top priority.

“It’s a David and Goliath situation,” said Birckhead, “There’s an assumption that the defendant is guilty, and should be immediately executed. All of that is a tough road to travel.”

On top of investigating and building their defense, Conrad and her team also have to deal with the routine threats and taunts that come along with standing up for someone reviled for allegedly bombing innocent people, including children.

“In general, it’s a very difficult job,” said Nancy Gertner, a judge and Harvard law professor. “Public defenders have to represent whoever comes in the door. Sometimes it’s a sympathetic defendant, but sometimes it’s an unsympathetic defendant, and Dzhokhar is as unsympathetic as they come. The public doesn’t understand that the system works better when defense lawyers work their hearts out.”

Conrad, 56, has led the Federal Public Defender’s Office since 2005. A graduate of Harvard Law School, she has defended a number of high profile terrorism cases.

In addition to defending Reid, Conrad represented represented Rezwan Ferdaus, a U.S. citizen of Bangladeshi ancestry who was sentenced to 17 years after he was found guilty of plotting an attack on the Capitol Building and the Pentagon.

Fick, an assistant in the office, is a graduate of Yale Law, who turned down an offer on Wall Street to become a public defender.

“This is a high quality team,” said Gertner, for whom Fick worked as a clerk. “It puts to lie the notion that public defenders are lesser lawyers. This is an enormously talented group.”

Tsarnaev’s defense team has likely already began its own investigation, but part of their defense will likely be looking for mitigating evidence, clues that explain Tsarnaev’s frame of mind.

“They are going to investigate Dzhokhar’s background and childhood, [and] the relationship with his brother. Was he acting under duress? What was his mental state? They’ll make sure he’s given psychiatric exams,” Birckhead said.

Calls to the defender office for comment were not returned.

Hips swinging, South Korean rapper Psy launched the dance and video of his new song “Gentleman” at a packed Seoul concert on Saturday, with nearly 160,000 tuned in online to see if he could carry off a repeat of his megahit “Gangnam Style”.

The video for “Gangnam Style” is the most watched ever on YouTube with more than 1.5 billion hits, and its horse-riding dance has been imitated by thousands around the world, from Eton schoolboys, to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

But a recent challenge from the “Harlem Shake” global dance craze upped the ante for “Gentleman”, and the 35-year-old Psy has made it clear he was aware of the high expectations.

“Of course I feel more burden than before, because lots of people are watching,” he told a news conference before the concert. “(Today’s show) is a performance of thanks for the ‘Gangnam Style’ success.”

The video for “Gentleman”, whose refrain is “I’m a mother father gentleman”, featured a fast, hip-swinging dance by Psy in his trademark sunglasses and a variety of jackets, from baby blue to hot pink and sparkly white.

Fans, many of them dressed in white as Psy had requested before the concert, packed the 50,000 seats at Seoul’s World Cup Stadium. The concert was also streamed live on the Internet.

“Gentleman”, released on Friday at midnight, had more than 1.2 million hits on YouTube for the song alone before the concert. It was 90th on the Apple iTunes store chart.

“I thought it was really good, really funny. It is hard to compare with the classic though. ‘Gangnam Style’ is perfect,” said Mark McKeon, a 25-year-old English teacher at the concert, who said he thought the new song still would do well.

Others said the video helped. “When I listened to just the song, it wasn’t good, but it is now okay with lots of dancers dancing together,” tweeted one Korean man.

ROCKY ROAD TO FAME

Psy, whose real name is Park Jae-sang, graduated from Berklee College of Music in the United States but had a rocky decade in show business before “Gangnam Style” rocketed him to global fame.

His debut 2001 album, “Psy from the Psycho World”, ran into trouble with the authorities for “inappropriate content” in the lead song, which was seen as sexually suggestive. He was charged with possession of marijuana in 2002.

He released five more albums.

Psy’s brash style – at Saturday’s concert, he danced to a Beyonce song in a skimpy bodysuit – contrasts sharply with the polished stars that dominate K-pop, an increasing presence on the world stage.

A Music Industry White Paper published by the Korean Creative Content Agency said sales of K-pop outside Korea surged 135 percent in 2011 to $196 million. In 2006, overseas sales were worth $16.7 million.

“Gangnam Style” racked up 3.59 million digital sales in the United States and Canada last year, according to Nielsen SoundScan and Nielsen BDS, ninth in the best-selling list. It was third on Amazon’s MP3 song bestseller list for 2012.

But it has been challenged by “Harlem Shake”, an electronic dance track by DJ Baauer released last year that went viral as a YouTube craze after Australian teenagers posted their version of the dance, sparking thousands of imitations.

The daughter of Rev. Jeremiah Wright, President Obama’s controversial former pastor, has been accused of laundering money in an alleged $1.25 million fraud led by an ex-police chief in Illinois.

Jeri L. Wright, 47, was indicted by a federal grand jury Wednesday for allegedly accepting $28,000 from former police chief Regina Evans and her husband, ex-police officer Ronald Evans, for Wright’s supposed work related to the Evanses’ not-for-profit program called We Are Our Brother’s Keeper. Approximately $20,000 of that money, however, found its way back into bank accounts controlled by the Evanses, prosecutors said.

According to a release from the Department of Justice, Wright was playing a part in a scheme by the Evanses to misuse a $1.25 million state grant that had been awarded to the not-for-profit program in 2009.

We Are Our Brother’s Keeper was supposed to spend the money on training up to 40 participants in bricklaying and electrical work at a Regal Theater also owned by the Evanses, but the indictment alleges that “little, if any, of the training provided in the grant agreement was ever completed.”

The Evanses have been charged with more than 10 fraud-related counts. In addition to the alleged money laundering, Wright stands accused of making false statements to federal law enforcement officers and lying to a grand jury. If convicted, Wright could face potentially decades in prison.

Regina Evan’s attorney has reportedly claimed the couple didn’t do anything wrong. Jeri Wright could not immediately be reached for comment.

PHOTO: An Iowa woman was charged with animal torture after she hung her boyfriend's dog by its leash in his garage.

April 8, 2013

An Iowa woman was charged with animal torture after she hanged a dog she shared with her boyfriend from a rafter in his garage.

Sheena Cornwell, 28, of Des Moines told police she hanged Lilly, a 15-year-old pit bull mix, by her collar and leash because she “was going to die soon anyway,” the police report stated.

Cornwell did not leave the garage to return to the house until the dog was dead, her boyfriend, Joshua Vandyke, told police.

Sgt. Jason Halifax, a Des Moines Police Department spokesman, told ABCNews.com that Cornwell’s boyfriend, Joshua Vandyke, came home from work around 5 p.m. on Saturday and found Cornwell upset about Lilly’s behavior. Vandyke told police that Cornwell then took the dog into the garage.

According to the police report, Vandyke told police that Cornwell had been annoyed with Lilly for the past two months, because the dog paced back and forth in the house, but he was shocked that she would do this.

Halifax said that when police arrested Cornwell, she admitted to hanging the dog and said she didn’t know what the big deal was. Vandyke had told police that Cornwell had a drinking problem and had been drinking vodka on Saturday, according to the police report.

“She’s a nasty person,” Halifax said.

Halifax said that the police animal control unit came to the house to unhook the dog from its leash and remove it from the house.

Sylvia White, who lives three doors down from Vandyke, told ABCNews.com that she stood on her front lawn when patrol cars arrived on her block Saturday evening. She said she did not know what happened until she saw animal rescue enter the house.

“[Animal control] came out and he was carrying what looked like a dog,” she said. “All you could see was the back legs sticking up. He had it in a plastic bag and he carried it out.”

The body of the dog was taken to Iowa State University for a necropsy today, Halifax said.

Cornwell was arrested and taken into custody at Polk County Jail on Saturday. She has since been released on bond.

Halifax said Cornwell had no previous history of animal torture. She could face up to two years in prison and a fine of up to $6,250 if convicted, ABC Des Moines affiliate WOI-DT reported.

Halifax said that Vandyke wanted to file a “no-contact” order against Cornwell to keep her from returning to his house when she got out of jail. He told police he feared for the safety of the couple’s other two dogs.

The couple has been living together for the past two years in the house Vandyke owns, according to the police report.

“He can’t really keep her out,” Halifax said. “That’s her residence. He can’t throw her out.”

Halifax said that while it’s normal for Des Moines police to respond to animal neglect calls, officers don’t typically have to handle situations at “this level of indecency or depravity.”

ABC News’ attempts to reach both Vandyke and Cornwell were not immediately successful.

When played to perfection, there’s nothing quite like Syracuse’s aggressive, half-court 2-3 zone defense.

It’s 40 minutes of trapping and shot-challenging, of closing off angles, of trusting teammates.

“We showed,” senior guard Brandan Triche said, “that defense wins games.”

Yes, the Orange D certainly does.

With a second suffocating performance at the East Regional, No. 4-seeded Syracuse shut down No. 3 Marquette 55-39 Saturday to earn coach Jim Boeheim his fourth trip to the Final Four — and first since a freshman named Carmelo Anthony helped win the 2003 NCAA championship.

“A tremendous, tremendous defensive effort,” Boeheim said.

Fittingly, a matchup between schools from the soon-to-break-apart, rough-and-tumble Big East became quite a struggle on the offensive end. Syracuse (30-9) was led by senior forward James Southerland’s 16 points. Michael Carter-Williams, a 6-foot-6 guard who is out front in the zone, was named the regional’s top player after accounting for 12 points, eight rebounds, six assists, five steals and only one turnover Saturday.

Marquette (26-9) hadn’t scored fewer than 47 points all season — and, indeed, put up 74 in a victory over Syracuse on Feb. 25. But this time, Marquette kept turning the ball over, seeing its shots blocked or just plain missing.

The Golden Eagles’ 39 points were a record low for a team in an NCAA tournament regional final since the shot clock was introduced in 1986.

“They beat us from start to finish. We collectively tried everything we knew to try,” Marquette coach Buzz Williams said. “It is the zone, and it is the players in the zone.”

Much like what happened Thursday in the regional semifinals, when Syracuse knocked off top-seeded Indiana by limiting it to a season-low output, too.

“I don’t think we’ve played as good defensively as these last two games,” Triche said. “We held some good teams down.”

All told, Marquette made only 12 of 53 shots — 23 percent — and was 3 for 24 on 3-pointers. Vander Blue, who carried Marquette to the round of eight, was held to 14 points on 3-for-15 shooting.

“They cover ground really good. You’ve got to get the ball in the middle, you’ve got to play inside out, you’ve got to get to the free-throw line and wear them down with the 3-pointer when you can,” Blue said. “They’re really good at what they do in that zone.”

Consider these numbers through four games in the tournament: Syracuse is averaging 6.5 blocks and 10.8 steals, while forcing opponents into 29 percent shooting, including 15 percent on 3-pointers.

“We couldn’t get one to drop in from up close,” said Marquette’s Jamil Wilson, who was 0 for 5 on 3-pointers, 1 for 9 overall. “We couldn’t get one to drop in from outside.”

The next team to try to solve that defense will be the winner of Sunday’s South Regional final between Florida and Michigan. Syracuse is 3-0 in national semifinal games under Boeheim.

And to think: Exactly three weeks ago, in this very same building, Syracuse wrapped up its final Big East regular-season schedule before heading to the Atlantic Coast Conference with a bad-as-can-be performance in a lopsided loss to Georgetown. Syracuse’s 39 points that day were the Orange’s tiniest total in a half-century.

That was Syracuse’s fourth loss in a span of five games, a stumbling way to head into tournament play.

Brett “Shady” Shadle, the SEAL Team Six member who died after a training accident in Arizona this week, was “one of the best,” a former colleague at the elite unit told ABC News.

“Both tactically on the battlefield and at home, he was one of the best SEALs I’ve ever worked with,” said an ex-SEAL Team Six member who served with Shadle for years. “His reputation was that of a great operator, a true friend and a nice guy.”

Shadle, a 31-year-old Pennsylvania native, was one of two SEAL Team Six members involved in a serious accident during routine freefall training in Arizona Thursday. Both SEALs were taken to a nearby hospital where Shadle succumbed to his injuries, according to Defense officials. The other SEAL is in stable condition, the Navy said.

“[Shadle] should be remembered as a hero, a father, a friend and an American,” Shadle’s former SEAL colleague said. “He sacrificed everything for his country.”

SEAL Team Six, the unit to which Shadle belonged, is the most elite of the SEAL teams and the one tasked with the historic May 2011 raid that killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

Saudi authorities have beheaded a murderer and crucified his body after he killed and raped a Pakistani national.

The kingdom’s interior ministry announced the execution, stating that the man had murdered and sodomised another male. Both actions are punishable by death.

‘The Yemeni citizen Mohammed Rashad Khairi Hussain killed a Pakistani, Pashteh Sayed Khan, after he committed sodomy with him,’ said a statement carried by state news agency SPA.

Hussain was also convicted of robbery and carrying out a series of attacks.

The execution, in the southern city of Jizan, was followed by crucifixion, a punishment used by the ultra-conservative country for serious crimes.

Saudi Arabia have been criticised in the international community for their harsh punishments, including executions by beheading and firing squad.

There have been 28 people beheaded in Saudi Arabia this year.

Human rights campaigners protest against beheadings in Saudi Arabia after eight Bangladeshi men were executed for an alleged murder

In 2012, they executed 76 people, according to an AFP tally based on official figures, while the US-based Human Rights Watch put the number at 69.

The oil-rich kingdom follows a strict implementation of Islamic law, or Shariah, under which people convicted of murder, rape or armed robbery can be executed, usually by sword.

The announcement comes after Amnesty International released the final words of a man sentenced to death by firing squad.

He was allegedly forced to confess after the authorities threatened to torture his mother.

Seven juveniles were arrested and convicted for armed robbery and sentenced to death in the Southern city of Abha after their appeals to the king were rejected.

One of the robbers was interviewed by the human rights charity before his death.

Families of the robbers had pleaded to Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah for clemency but the executions were carried out as planned

He said: ‘I have nine hours left until I die. We found this out through friends and relatives who saw the market square being prepared for the execution.

‘There are now seven spots in the square for seven people to be shot. It’s going to be in public, in the market, in the city of Abha.

‘We don’t know what we are supposed to have done wrong.

‘We were forced to make confessions. We were mistreated by the investigators – they took our clothes and it was winter. They tortured us by suspending us from chains on the wall.

‘They also used psychological torture such as threatening they would bring in our mothers and torture them in front of us.

‘I didn’t kill anyone – we were tried for robbery and we were forced to confess. I hope the execution will be stopped.

‘I wish for it to be stopped and for a fair trial and for a reinvestigation. The trial was totally unjust.’

One of the men told The Associated Press last month he was only 15 when he was arrested as part of a ring that stole jewelry in 2004 and 2005.It was also reported that they had no access to lawyers.

The south has been marginalized and suffered discrimination by the powerful central Saudi region where the capital, Riyadh, and holy shrines of Mecca and Medina are located.

It was reported on March 13 that the execution went ahead despite appeals from human rights charities.

There was also an international outcry, including from human rights groups, after a Sri Lankan maid, Rizana Nafeek, was beheaded in public by sword last month.

Miss Nafeek was sentenced to death aged 17 in 2007 after her Saudi employer accused her of strangling his four-month-old baby two years earlier after a dispute with the child’s mother.

A government spokesman said Riyadh: ‘deplores the statements made… about the execution of a Sri Lankan maid who had plotted and killed an infant by suffocating him to death one week after she arrived in the kingdom.’

The case soured the kingdom’s diplomatic relations with Sri Lanka, which on Thursday recalled its ambassador to Saudi Arabia in protest.

The UN’s main human rights body on Friday expressed ‘deep dismay’ at the beheading, while the European Union said it had asked Saudi authorities to commute the death penalty.

Riyadh, however, rejected the statements as ‘external interference’ in its domestic affairs.

The spokesman said: Saudi Arabia ‘respects… all rules and laws and protects the rights of its people and residents, and completely rejects any intervention in its affairs and judicial verdicts, whatever the excuse.’

A former state trooper killed his estranged wife with a shotgun inside a central Pennsylvania supermarket Thursday and then killed himself, days after she filed for divorce and two months after he was accused of beating her, police said.

Mark A. Miscavish, who retired from the state police in 2011 after 15 years, killed Traci Miscavish at around 10 a.m. at the County Market in Philipsburg where she worked, authorities said. Police also spelled her first name Tracie.

He was arrested Jan. 23 after Traci Miscavish, who had recently left him, returned to the home to retrieve some belongings, Centre County District Attorney Stacy Parks Miller said.

Traci Miscavish believed her husband had been abusing prescription drugs and when she went to take them away, he wrestled her to the ground, pinned her arms behind her and attempted to bind her with duct tape, said Parks Miller, whose office was prosecuting him.

He pulled out a gun — a police affidavit said he did not point it at her — and threatened to kill her, but a passer-by saw him trying to drag her back into the home and stopped to help, Parks Miller said. He was charged with simple assault, terroristic threats and harassment and spent a week in jail before being bailed out.

Parks Miller said Traci Miscavish lived in fear of her 51-year-old estranged husband and told prosecutors she believed he would harm her further.

“She said, ‘The next time I see him is going to be at the end of a gun,'” Parks Miller told The Associated Press. “We were very concerned when he got out and we’re just devastated now.”

Mark Miscavish’s defense attorney, David Charles Mason, was not available for comment, his office said.

Traci Miscavish filed for divorce within the past week.

Her sister Gina March, speaking to reporters outside the supermarket after the shooting, said the system had failed both her sister and her brother-in-law.

“He wasn’t in his right mind,” March said. “I don’t believe he’s at fault, I believe he needed help. … And nobody was there to help him, not the judge, not the cops, not our system.”

State police planned an afternoon news conference to discuss the case.

Christina Price, who said she works at a liquor store in the same strip mall as the supermarket, told the Centre Daily Times that Traci Miscavish was a cheerful woman and so friendly and happy that “you couldn’t imagine there was stuff going on at home.”

Price told the newspaper she had no idea the woman had a protection order against her husband.

“Would it have stopped this?” she asked. “It’s like, how do you get out alive? When you’ve got kids and grandkids and friends and family, how do you split it and get away?”

Saturday marked the 22nd anniversary of one of Canada’s most-publicized missing child cases — and police say they haven’t given up hope of finding Michael Dunahee.

Dunahee was four years old when he vanished from the school playground at Blanshard Elementary School in Victoria, B.C., on March 24, 1991.

“I just keep thinking Michael would be about 25, 26 now, and that’s how old I was when he was born,” his father, Bruce Dunahee, said Saturday. “I’m just wondering, do I have any grandchildren or where he is or what’s going on with his life.”

Crystal Dunahee believes her son is still alive.

“It’s just that mother’s intuition,” she said.

But despite extensive investigations, at least 11,000 tips to police, and international news coverage, Dunahee’s disappearance remains a mystery.

“This is one of the biggest child abduction investigations that’s ever been investigated,” said Const. Mike Russell with the Victoria Police Department.

“We’re committed to finding out who did it and we’ve said that all along. It’s still discussed in the halls. The officers here who’ve been working since then, who were there on that day — it still greatly affects them.”

Over the years, police have released a number of composite sketches to show what the boy might look like as a teen and young adult.

Dunahee’s parents hope someone will remember something and come forward.

“It’s been 22 years,” Bruce Dunahee said. “We need an answer. We’ve got to start putting this behind us, and we just need you to come forward with the right answer and the right tip.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Victoria Police Department or Crime Stoppers.

The La Salle Explorers took advantage of their Kansas City karma and reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

Guard Tyrone Garland’s basket on a drive through the lane with 2.5 seconds left gave the 13th-seeded Explorers a 76-74 victory over No. 12 Mississippi on Sunday night at the Sprint Center.

The Explorers, who have won three NCAA Tournament games in five nights in two time zones, advanced to the Sweet 16, where they will face No. 9 Wichita State on Thursday in Los Angeles.

It’s the farthest La Salle has advanced since 1955 when LaSalle, as defending NCAA champion, reached the title game of a 24-team tournament and lost to Bill Russell’s University of San Francisco team.

Ramon Galloway led the Explorers, 24-9, with 24 points and Garland scored 21.

Marshall Henderson led Ole Miss, 27-9, with 21 points.

Reginald Buckner’s put-back gave the Rebels a 73-72 lead with 2:43, but he missed the free throw that followed — the Rebels’ 10th miss in 19 attempts. LaDarius White then made one of two free throws, making it 74-72 with 1:58 to play.

La Salle’s Tyreek Duren tied it 74-74 by making both ends of a one-and-one with 1:07 to play. White missed the basket with a jumper with 44 seconds to play, but in the ensuing scramble, the Rebels were awarded the ball out of bounds with 12 seconds left on the shot clock.

But Henderson was unable to get off a shot in time, and La Salle took over on the shot-clock violation with 32 seconds to play.

Ole Miss point guard Jarvis Summers gave the Rebels a 71-69 with a basket with 3:25 to play in the game, but Duren answered with a three-point shot for a 72-71 lead.

La Salle tied the game at 69-69 on a five-point possession. Sam Mills made a three-pointer and was fouled with 4:01 to play. He missed the free throw, but Jerrell Wright grabbed the rebound and scored on the put-back.

Henderson gave the Rebels a 65-62 lead with a traditional three-point play when he was fouled making a jump shot and converted the free throw with 6:39 to play.

Duren answered with a basket, and the Explorers had a chance to take the lead but Ole Miss’ Reginald Buckner blocked the shot, and the Rebels’ Nick Williams scored at the other end for a 67-64 lead with 4:57 to play.

Ole Miss trailed 55-52 when forward Murphy Holloway put together a four-point play with 10:44 left to play. Holloway scored an inside basket and was fouled. He missed the free throw but gathered the rebound in the lane and scored for a 56-55 lead.

After an Explorers’ turnover, Henderson drained a three-point shot, extending the lead to 59-55 with 9:49 to play.

La Salle led 40-38 at halftime as Galloway made five of eight three-point attempts and had 19 points, while Henderson got off to a slow start for the second straight game. Henderson made just three of nine from beyond the arc in the first half, and had 11 points.

Miranda Lambert is standing by her man — literally. Despite a slew of recent tabloid articles claiming that Blake Shelton had cheated on her with aspiring musician Cady Groves, the tough-as-nails “Gunpowder & Lead” singer joined her husband at The Voice‘s season 4 premiere party in Hollywood March 20.

“They posed together on the carpet for a few pictures with their arms around each other,” an attendee tells Us Weekly of the country superstars, who tied the knot in May 2011. “Then Miranda went straight in as Blake began his interviews.”

Shelton, 36, laughed off the infidelity rumors three days earlier via Twitter. “Hey, Miranda . . . I just read in a tabloid that our marriage is falling apart,” he wrote. “Fock!” An amused Lambert, 29, replied, “Oh no! Can’t wait to read if we make it or not.”

The couple, who also slammed pregnancy rumors in November 2012, have learned to tune out the negativity and focus on what makes each other happy. “We accept and understand each other. Miranda would never want to tame me into being somebody I’m not, and I would never try to do that to her,” Shelton told Redbook last year. “I think a lot of it has to do with feeling settled and lucky to have ended up with the person I really wanted to be with. To me, that’s being tamed in the best possible way.”

The “Sure Be Cool If You Did” singer vowed to always stick up for Lambert when she’s faced with scrutiny. “I’m never going to listen to someone trash my wife,” Shelton told the magazine. “I think you have to be willing to take a bullet for somebody if you’re going to stand up there, take your vows, and be married to them for the rest of your life.”

Marian Hossa missed the entire game, Andrew Shaw much of it and Patrick Sharp the latter stages, but the Blackhawks just kept streaking.

The undermanned Hawks overcame serious adversity to extend their run of games without a regulation loss to start the season to 24 and their franchise-record winning streak to 11 with a 3-2 victory over the Avalanche on Wednesday night at the United Center.

Daniel Carcillo scored the game-winner with 49.3 seconds remaining in the third period, Jonathan Toews and Shaw also scored and Ray Emery earned the victory in goal as the Hawks improved to 21-0-3 this season. They reached the halfway mark of the 48-game lockout-shortened season with 45 of a possible 48 points and dating back to last season have not fallen in regulation in their last 30 games — the second-longest streak in NHL history.

“We found a way to win,” Emery said. “They came out hard and I thought we played well. Their goalie played well and kept them in it. We buried a couple in the third and won in exciting fashion again.”

After losing Hossa shortly before the game with an upper-body injury, Shaw in the second after taking an elbow to the chin and Sharp with a possible arm or shoulder injury after a hit along the boards, the Hawks carried on with nine forwards.

With Hossa out of the lineup, the Hawks had to rework their lines and power-play units. Daniel Carcillo replaced the veteran on the top line with fellow winger Brandon Saad and center Jonathan Toews and Saad saw time with the man advantage.

“We never go away, we never give up, we keep coming at them whether we have guys injured and we only have three lines we keep coming at them,” Toews said.

Of the injuries, Sharp’s appears to be the worst, with coach Joel Quenneville saying the veteran “might miss some time.” Quenneville added that Hossa was “close to playing” and Shaw “is not too bad.”

The Saad power-play move paid early dividends as he had a hand in Shaw’s score midway through the opening period. Saad earned an assist after getting the puck to Brent Seabrook, who unloaded a cannon shot from just inside the blue line that Shaw redirected for his sixth goal of the season.

The Hawks were awarded the power play after the Avalanche’s Cody McLeod was called for roughing after going after Seabrook, who dumped Patrick Bordeleau into the Avs’ bench with a big but legal check.

The Avalanche tied it late in the first when John Mitchell went top shelf with a backhander from near the right post that Emery couldn’t handle.

Both goalies were sharp early in the second with Emery getting just enough of a Chuck Kobasew shot on a breakaway coming out of the penalty box to keep it even and Semyon Varlamov stoning Sharp on a break.

Later, Sharp had another opportunity turned aside by Varlamov and the Avalanche took the lead on the counter-attack as Matt Duchene tucked the puck between Emery and the post to give the Avalanche a 2-1 advantage.

Early in the third, Toews knotted the score 2-2 with a short-handed goal. The captain skated right around Avs center Ryan O’Reilly and tucked a forehand past Varlamov to send the crowd of 21,531 into a frenzy.

Emery kept it that way with a terrific stop on a Gabriel Landeskog stuff attempt to keep the momentum in favor of the Hawks.

Carcillo got the winner when he backhanded a rebound of a Viktor Stalberg shot past Varlamov.

“We’re showing a lot of maturity and a lot of great qualities as a team in any situation,” Toews said. “We’re tough to play against. If we’re down a goal in third period we can put a lot of pressure on the other team and really make them just survive the pressure we put on them.”

Warriors Knicks Basketball.JPEG

February 28, 2013

Carmelo Anthony scored 35 points, J.R. Smith hit the tiebreaking shot with 1:10 left, and the New York Knicks overcame Stephen Curry’s NBA season-high 54 points to beat the Golden State Warriors 109-105 on Wednesday night.

Curry was 18 of 28 from the field, finishing one shy of the NBA record with 11 3-pointers, in a performance that had the crowd hanging on his every shot. But the Knicks finally stopped him with 1:28 to play when Raymond Felton blocked his shot with the score tied at 105.

That led to a jumper by Smith, who finished with 26 points. Anthony followed with another basket and the Knicks hung on to spoil former Knicks star and Warriors coach Mark Jackson’s homecoming.

Curry finished with seven assists and six rebounds while passing his previous career best of 42 points, and Kevin Durant’s 52-point performance that had been the best in the NBA this season.

But he had little help without All-Star forward David Lee, who was suspended one game for his role in an altercation Tuesday night in Indiana.

Tyson Chandler had 16 points and a career-best 28 rebounds for the Knicks, who won their second straight after a season-high, four-game losing streak. Amare Stoudemire had 14 points and Anthony added eight assists on the day the Knicks learned they could be without reserve forward Rasheed Wallace for the rest of the season because he needs surgery to repair a broken bone in his left foot.

Strutting all over the court whenever one of his 3s swished easily through the nets, Curry easily blew past the 38 points he scored Tuesday in Indiana, which had been his best of the season. That was spoiled when he was fined $35,000 for his role in the skirmish, which was essentially getting thrown to the ground by Roy Hibbert when he tried to intervene.

This performance — the most points by an NBA player in a loss since Kobe Bryant had 58 in a loss to Charlotte on Dec. 29, 2006 — was spoiled along with Jackson’s trip back to his old home because of a few mistakes down the stretch.

Curry threw away a pass on the break with about three minutes left, and Jarrett Jack was called for a travel following Smith’s go-ahead basket.

Plus, Klay Thompson finished 3 of 13 from the field, missing two straight from deep in the final minute.

Jackson, who grew up in Brooklyn and starred at St. John’s before being drafted by the Knicks in 1987, didn’t get a chance to coach here last season as an NBA rookie on the bench because of the lockout. He brought his wife, Desiree, to a road game for the first time this season, had his mother in the stands, and got a chance to see people he remembered from playing here years earlier.

He said he hadn’t gotten to look ahead much to the game because of the schedule, but clearly enjoyed being back in Madison Square Garden once the day did arrive.

“This is a special place and it was part of my dreams as a kid,” he said.

His night turned into Curry’s, fans cheering even before the ball left his hand in the second half.

The Knicks, who hadn’t played since Sunday, looked ready to blow the Warriors out early. An 11-2 run gave them a 25-11 lead late in the first quarter, which the Warriors trimmed to 27-18 at the end of the period before surging ahead behind Curry.

Michael Waltrip, NASCAR and Swan Racing are teaming up to help bring eyeballs and attention to helping the community of Newtown, Conn., through the Sandy Hook School Support Fund.

Two-time Daytona 500 champion Waltrip will drive the No. 26 Toyota for Swan Racing in the race on Feb. 24, in honor of the 26 victims of the Sandy Hook shooting. His car will carry a decal that will remind fans and race viewers they can text donations to NEWTOWN to 80888.

The effort came about after officials from NASCAR, Swan Racing and Waltrip traveled to Newtown to meet with leaders in the community, first responders and families of the 26 victims.

Waltrip said that going to Newtown and shaking hands and hugging people that were directly affected was an amazing experience. He added that it was very fulfilling to be able to make the people in that community smile and give them something to look forward to.

“The car is beautiful and they loved it,” Waltrip said Thursday at NASCAR Media Day. “They were in disbelief that people would care enough to do what we’re going to do for them.

“As happens a lot in life with me, I felt like actually thanking them for allowing me to come into their world and allowing us to do this. They wanted to thank us for doing it, and that’s a great feeling.”

All monies from the fund, which was established by United Way of Western Connecticut and Newtown Savings Bank, will go toward helping the community heal from the events of Dec. 14, 2012.

Waltrip also confirmed that all three of his Sprint Cup cars will carry the decal for the Daytona 500, as well.

“Driving the No. 26 Sandy Hook School Support Fund Toyota is like nothing I have ever been part of in my NASCAR career,” Waltrip said. “It will be an emotional week knowing that we have the potential to do so much good for the Newtown community. I’m racing for a reason.”

CEO Brian France and his wife announced they will donate $50,000, which the NASCAR Foundation will match.

“That’s $100,000 already, and we just started,” Waltrip said. “And I know our 75 million fans will rally around texting “NEWTOWN” to 80888. We can make a real difference.”

France said he was excited to witness firsthand the NASCAR’s community’s embrace and support of the Sandy Hook School Support Fund.

“Being in Newtown last week and delivering a moment of happiness to that community was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced,” said France. “Looking out at a room of smiling faces amidst the aftermath of a horrible tragedy was very powerful. It hit me that the NASCAR industry and our passionate fan base have an unbelievable opportunity to rally around this cause and make a huge difference for a community in need.”

ESPN NFL Draft analyst Mel Kiper put out his second 2013 mock draft today.

Most notably, Kiper sticks with Luke Joeckel as the No. 1 pick to the Kansas City Chiefs. Kiper’s first six picks remain the same.

The first difference comes with the seventh pick. He initially had guard Chance Warmack going to the Arizona Cardinals but has flipped it to Senior Bowl star offensive tackle Eric Fisher of Central Michigan.

Here’s what he has to say about the pick:

This is one of the spots where you could see a QB come off the board, but at this stage a QB taken at No. 7 would be a significant reach. Until we see major strides by one of the QB options, Arizona is better off adding a key piece it can start right away and looking for a QB in Round 2, or trading up into the late first.

Kiper has Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o dropping from Buffalo and the eighth pick to 13th and the Buccaneers. He gives the Bills linebacker Alec Ogletree instead. Ogletree’s placement in mock drafts has fluctuated since the college football season ended. He’s just as likely to go this high as he is to land in the back end of the first round.

Once again, Kiper has no quarterbacks being taken in the first round. That also happened in his last mock draft. Here’s his explanation:

For teams like Kansas City and Arizona, the value of the pick of a QB in the top 10 just doesn’t make a lot of sense, but they could be in play to trade up and take a player like Matt Barkley, Geno Smith or Mike Glennon somewhere late in Round 1.

There are no real surprise choices in Kiper’s mock draft. At this point of the NFL Draft season, things are stating to settle a little bit. It’ll get jumbled again after the NFL Combine. Matthew Fairburn and I will have a collaborative mock draft on Monday morning. You can check out the latest from Fairburn here.

Oh, and before someone says “who cares about Mel Kiper, he sucks,” nobody made you read this. Grow up.

Brooklyn Nets point guard Deron Williams became the 56th player in NBA history to record 5,000 assists on Wednesday night against the Detroit Pistons.

Williams came into the game just one assist shy of the milestone. He recorded assist No. 5,000 when he fed Gerald Wallace for a jumper early in the first quarter.

D-Will (554 carer games) became just the seventh player since 1985-86 to record 5,000 assists in fewer than 600 games. He became the third-fastest active player to record 5,000, behind only Chris Paul (510) and Jason Kidd (531).

The Mavericks have their work cut out for them tonight in the finale of a long, grinding and mostly disappointing four-game road trip.

All Kevin Durant has done in two previous meetings this season is average 46 points.

He will be a defensive priority, obviously.

“We got to do a lot better,” coach Rick Carlisle said this morning after the Mavericks’ shootaround. “He’s a great player, but the other thing is he’s extremely opportunistic. Two or three times a game, they get you when they get an offensive rebound and they look to the 3-point line and they find him standing out there. If nobody’s guarding, he knocks down that shot. There’s just a lot of little things that lead to big problems.”

There was a time when the Mavericks were the big brother to Oklahoma City’s rising young stars. Clearly, the tables have turned in the last two seasons. The Thunder swept the Mavericks in the first round of the playoffs last season and they clearly have learned from some of the hard knocks they took in 2011, which included a Western Conference finals loss to the eventual NBA champion Mavericks.

Both games this season have gone to overtime, and both have gone to OKC.

“We’re making too many mistakes,” Nowitzki said. “It seems like we had OKC’s number for a long time, especially that year we won the championship. And since then we can’t beat ‘em in close games for some reason. So it’s frustrating, but we got to limit our mistakes down the stretch. That’s what it comes down to.”

Asked how much the Thunder has grown in two seasons, Nowitzki said: “They took a huge step. They went to the Finals last year and to me, they were actually the favorites to win it the way they ran through the whole Western Conference. Kevin’s playing an amazing all-around game. He’s tough and obviously (Russell) Westbrook attacks whenever he can. This is about as tough a road test as it gets.

“Obviously, now they’re more experienced. Going through tough times, you learn from losing tough games. They got a really tough team.”

Five-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson will drive for JR Motorsports in the March 2 Nationwide Series race at Phoenix International Raceway, general manager Kelley Earnhardt Miller announced Thursday in a press release. JR Motorsports is owned by Johnson’s Hendrick Motorsports teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Johnson will drive the No. 5 Great Clips Chevrolet in the Bashas’ Supermarkets 200, his first Nationwide Series race since finishing second in a JR Motorsports car at Watkins Glen International on Aug. 13, 2011.

“I appreciate Junior letting me run one of his cars,” said Johnson. “My goal is to make my team owner so proud that, perhaps, he’ll invite me back more often than once every two years.

“In all seriousness, this is a great opportunity for me to get more familiar with the new configuration at PIR. Not only do we race there twice in (Sprint) Cup, but both races are in crucial spots on the schedule for Team Lowe’s Racing. I appreciate JR Motorsports and Great Clips giving me this opportunity, and I hope to not disappoint my team owner.”

Green just caught his third TD on a 49-yard bomb from Andrew Luck. He now has 6 receptions for 95 yards (15.8) on just 7 targets.

During the annual NFL Pro Bowl in Honolulu tonight, Bengals receiver A.J. Green set a franchise record with his third touchdown in two Pro Bowls. The previous record for most touchdowns all-time in the Pro Bowl was held by Chad Johnson (2) and T.J. Houshmandzadeh.

His first came on a 6-yard pass from Broncos QB and future hall-of-famer Peyton Manning during the first-quarter.

His second came in the fourth-quarter on a 4-yard jump-ball that Colts QB Andrew Luck put just enough air under for Green to go up and snatch it over Bears cornerback Tim Jennings.

While the Pro Bowl has become nothing more than a glorified game of flag-football, it’s still a nice honor for Green to capture in just his second year in the NFL, and there will undoubtedly be many more to come.

LeBron James has proved he is one of the greatest players in National Basketball Association history and passed the 20,000 point mark this week. I think James has a very real chance to challenge the NBA scoring record held by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. James became the youngest player to reach 20,000 and if he can keep up his scoring for the next five to seven years, the possibility is definitely there.

James is a player that is difficult to stop for any player and he has shown that even after moving to the Miami Heat. I think the next big step for James would be to see where he is at when he reaches 30,000 points. If James can be at 30,000 points by the age of 33, I think that he will break the scoring record. James just turned 28 in December and he probably will have to play until he is 38 or 39 to have any chance for the record.

I feel confident that James will make it into his mid-30s but maybe not 38 or 39. The drive to at least pass Michael Jordan on the scoring list will keep James in the game longer. James could end his career being a better player than Jordan which would be high praise from me as I think Jordan is the best player in NBA history. I want to see James get close to the record at the least and breaking the record would just be icing on the cake for me. While fans hated the decision, James is showing that all that negative publicity isn’t hurting him in filling the hoop up.

Tiger Woods shouldn’t mind an extra day at Torrey Pines.

Zeus couldn’t have been more at home on Mount Olympus than Woods is hurling his own lightning bolts around this golf course.

With fog preventing all but two groups from teeing off Saturday at the Farmers Insurance Open, play was suspended for all but about 15 minutes. Woods never even made it to Torrey Pines with a “marine layer” squatting over this coastline course all day. With the third round pushed to Sunday, the Farmers Insurance Open’s final round will be bumped into Monday.

“I have been out here long enough to know that this is part of the game,” Woods said in a statement released by the PGA Tour. “I’ll be ready to go tomorrow.”

With his 7-under-par 65 Friday on the North Course, Woods took sole possession of the lead in his bid to win his eighth professional title at Torrey Pines. At 11-under 133, he’s two shots ahead of Billy Horschel and three ahead of six other players.

The field will return to the course at 7 a.m. PT Sunday to resume the third round, not to re-start it. The Tour’s plan is to play as much golf as possible and finish up on Monday without a 54-hole cut or re-pairing.

Sleeping another night on the lead in a PGA Tour event is no big deal for Woods, who has slept on more of them than anybody but Sam Snead. A bigger deal is that Horschel and Casey Wittenberg have another night to sleep on their pairing with Woods. Also, with the Tour not re-pairing after the third round is complete, Horschel and Wittenberg are assured of playing with Woods for the final 36 holes.

Horschel loved the idea.

“It’s a pretty cool thing that’s going to happen,” he said. “It’s going to be a fun day tomorrow.”

Wittenberg also sounded up for the challenge.

“We’ll have to get out there and see what we can do,” Wittenberg said.

Horschel, 26, and Wittenberg, 28, are seeking their first PGA Tour titles. Woods doesn’t have a lot of “pedigree” on his heels. Horschel and Wittenberg are among the seven players directly behind Woods on the leaderboard who have never won a PGA Tour title.

Horschel and Wittenberg can only hope Woods’ momentum was slowed by Saturday’s fog delay. Woods is on a roll this week. He rekindled his prowess with the driver over the first two rounds, putting on a clinic with one long, straight drive after another. He ranks first in driving distance for the week (318.5 yards per drive) and, more impressively, fourth in driving accuracy (19 of 28 fairways hit). Those totals make him No. 1 in total driving this week.

The confidence Woods is displaying with his driver isn’t good for the rest of the field. It seems to be filtering into every element of Woods’ game. He was sharp in every facet of his play Friday.

Winning at Torrey Pines looms as another kick-start to a big year for Woods. In the six seasons he has won at year’s start at Torrey Pines, he has gone on to win major championships in five of them.

PHOTO: Lance Armstrong speaks at the 15th anniversary celebration of Livestrong, his cancer-fighting charity, Friday, Oct. 19, 2012 in Austin, Texas.

January 8, 2013

The year before his seventh and final Tour de France victory, Lance Armstrong offered to donate “in excess of $150,000″ to the antidoping agency in charge of keeping American athletes from using performance-enhancing drugs, according to the organization’s chief executive.

The latest accusation against Armstrong, the disgraced former cyclist, was made by the current head of the United States Anti-Doping Agency, Travis Tygart, in an interview with CBS News posted online on Tuesday. In October, Usada stripped Armstrong of all of his titles and barred him from competition for life following the release of a 202-page report into what the agency called “the most sophisticated, professionalized and successful doping program that sport has ever seen.”

As my colleague Juliet Macur reported, Armstrong, who has so far denied all allegations of cheating, “has told associates and antidoping officials that he is considering publicly admitting that he used banned performance-enhancing drugs and blood transfusions during his cycling career.” Late Tuesday, Oprah Winfrey announced that she “will speak exclusively with Lance Armstrong in his first no-holds-barred interview,” to be broadcast next week on her network.

BREAKING NEWS: Looking forward to this conversation with@lancearmstrongbit.ly/Xix8Ah

As the cycling journalist Lionel Birnie notes, the Oprah Winfrey Network is a joint venture with Discovery Communications, the broadcaster that sponsored Armstrong’s team in 2005.

Lance is going on Oprah, partly-produced by Discovery Channel, sponsors of Lance’s 7th and final fraudulent Tour win. Somehow fitting.

The network’s logo was emblazoned across the victor’s yellow jersey Armstrong wore on the top step of the podium in Paris that year, as he lectured “the people that don’t believe in cycling, the cynics and the skeptics.”

Directly addressing those who accused him of doping that day, Armstrong said, “I’m sorry for you, I’m sorry you can’t dream big and I’m sorry you don’t believe in miracles, but this is one hell of a race, this is a great sporting event and you should stand around and believe. You should believe in these athletes and you should believe in these people. I’m a fan of the Tour de France for as long as I live and there’s no secrets — hard work wins it.”

Another journalist who writes about cycling, Shane Stokes, suggested that Armstrong might expect Winfrey to go easy on him, since she let another disgraced athlete, Marion Jones, claim during a 2008 interview that she had used performance-enhancing drugs unintentionally.

Just after news of the interview broke, Kathy LeMond, whose husband, Greg, is now the only American to win the Tour de France, offered to put Winfrey in touch with people who could give her a crash course on the culture of professional cycling.

BREAKING NEWS: Looking forward to this conversation with@lancearmstrongbit.ly/Xix8Ah

.@Oprah I hope you get educated before the interview. I know people that can help you.

Joe Lindsey of Bicycling Magazine asked his Twitter followers to help Winfrey by suggesting some tough questions.

I am trying to anticipate some of “no holds barred” questions in Oprah’s Lance interview. How about some suggestions?

That’s pretty good. RT @BBQ44 what did you tell your kids or will/have you?

The complete CBS interview with the antidoping official is scheduled to be broadcast on Wednesday, during the premier of a new program, “60 Minutes Sports.” In one portion released on Tuesday, Tygart said it was “totally inappropriate” that Armstrong had donated about $100,000 to the International Cycling Union, a regulatory body involved in drug testing, during his career. He then revealed that someone representing Armstrong had offered to give the American antidoping agency more than $150,000 at some point in 2004. “It was a clear conflict of interest for Usada,” Tygart said. “We had no hesitation in rejecting that offer.” Pressed further about the amount of the proposed donation, Tygart said that it was about $250,000.

In another portion of the interview, broadcast on the CBS Evening News on Tuesday, Tygart said that Armstrong had tried to intimidate former teammates who had testified to a federal grand jury about his doping. The official also revealed that he personally had received death threats as a result of his investigation into the cancer survivor who was once a hero to millions.

Lance Armstrong may not be done confessing.

His interview with Oprah Winfrey hasn’t aired yet, but already some people want to hear more — under oath — before Armstrong is allowed to compete in elite triathlons, a sport he returned to after retiring from cycling in 2011. In addition to stripping him of all seven of his Tour de France titles last year, anti-doping officials banned Armstrong for life from sanctioned events.

“He’s got to follow a certain course,” David Howman, director general of World Anti-Doping Agency, told the AP. “That is not talking to a talk show host.”

Armstrong already has had conversations with U.S. Anti-Doping Agency officials, touching off speculation that the team leader who demanded loyalty from others soon may face some very tough choices himself: whether to cooperate and name those who aided, knew about or helped cover up a sophisticated doping ring that Armstrong ran on his tour-winning U.S. Postal Service squads. Former teammate Frankie Andreu, one of several riders Armstrong cast aside on his ride to the top of the sport, said no one could provide a better blueprint for cleaning up the sport.

“Lance knows everything that happened,” Andreu told The Associated Press. “He’s the one who knows who did what because he was the ringleader. It’s up to him how much he wants to expose.”

World Anti-Doping Agency officials said nothing short of “a full confession under oath” would even cause them to reconsider the ban. Although Armstrong admitted to Winfrey on Monday that he used performance-enhancing drugs, Howman said that is “hardly the same as giving evidence to a relevant authority.” The International Cycling Union also urged Armstrong to tell his story to an independent commission it has set up to examine claims that the sport’s governing body hid suspicious samples, accepted financial donations, and helped Armstrong avoid detection in doping tests.

Winfrey wouldn’t detail what Armstrong said during their interview at a downtown Austin hotel. In an appearance on “CBS This Morning,” she said she was “mesmerized and riveted by some of his answers.” What had been planned as a 90-minute broadcast will be shown as a two-part special, Thursday and Friday, on Winfrey’s OWN network.

The lifetime ban was imposed after a 1,000-page report by USADA last year outlined a complex, long-running doping program led by Armstrong. The cyclist also lost nearly all of his endorsements and was forced to cut ties with the Livestrong cancer charity he founded in 1997. The damage to Armstrong’s reputation was just as severe.

The report portrayed him as well-versed in the use of a wide range of performance-enhancers, including steroids and blood boosters such as EPO, and willing to exploit them to dominate. Nearly a dozen teammates provided testimony about that drug regimen, among them Andreu and his wife, Betsy.

“A lot of it was news and shocking to me,” Andreu said. “I am sure it’s shocking to the world. There’s been signs leading up to this moment for a long time. For my wife and I, we’ve been attacked and ripped apart by Lance and all of his people, and all his supporters repeatedly for a long time. I just wish they wouldn’t have been so blind and opened up their eyes earlier to all the signs that indicated there was deception there, so that we wouldn’t have had to suffer as much.

“And it’s not only us,” he added, “he’s ruined a lot of people’s lives.”

Armstrong was believed to have left for Hawaii. The street outside his Spanish-style villa on Austin’s west side was quiet the day after international TV crews gathered there hoping to catch a glimpse of him. Meanwhile, members of his legal team mapped out a strategy on how to handle at least two pending lawsuits against Armstrong, and possibly a third.

Former teammate Floyd Landis, who was stripped of the 2006 Tour de France title for doping, alleges in one of the lawsuits that Armstrong defrauded the U.S. government by repeatedly denying he used performance-enhancing drugs. The False Claims Act lawsuit could require Armstrong to return substantial sponsorship fees and pay a hefty fine. The AP reported earlier Tuesday that Justice Department officials were likely to join the whistleblower lawsuit before a Thursday deadline.

A paparazzo hoping to get a picture of Justin Bieber in his Ferrari after the vehicle was pulled over by police in Los Angeles got struck and killed by an SUV instead.

And as it turned out, the 18-year-old singer wasn’t even in the sports car, which was driven at the time by his pal, rapper Lil Twist, TMZ reported.

The incident began when the California Highway Patrol pulled over Bieber’s white Ferrari around 6 p.m. Tuesday on the 405 Freeway, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Hat and shoe rest on the roadway where a photographer was struck and killed while trying to take photos of Justin Bieber’s Ferrari.

Police directed the driver to exit the busy roadway onto Sepulveda Boulevard, and shortly afterwards the 29-year-old paparazzo arrived to take pictures, law enforcement sources told the newspaper.

The photographer, identified by TMZ as Chris Guerra, crossed the street to take photos, but was directed by officers to return to his car. When he finally went back to his vehicle, he was struck by an SUV.

Authorities said the man did not look before crossing the roadway, CBS 2 News in Los Angeles reported.

The victim was rushed to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, where he died.

Investigators at the scene of the deadly accident.

Inside the Ferrari, which does belong to Bieber, was not the “Boyfriend” singer but instead two of his friends.

“While I was not present nor directly involved with this tragic accident, my thoughts and prayers are with the family of the victim,” Bieber said in a statement, according to CNN.

“Hopefully this tragedy will finally inspire meaningful legislation and whatever other necessary steps to protect the lives and safety of celebrities, police officers, innocent public bystanders, and the photographers themselves.”

Fellow paparazzi magnet Miley Cyrus, however, was in a far less gracious mood.

“Hope this paparazzi/JB accident brings on some changes in ’13,” the former Disney star tweeted Tuesday night. “Paparazzi are dangerous! Wasn’t Princess Di enough of a wake up call?!
“It is unfair for anyone to put this on to Justin’s conscious as well! This was bound to happen! Your mom teaches u when your a child not to play in the street! The chaos that comes with the paparazzi acting like fools makes it impossible for anyone to make safe choices.”

The LAPD are investigating, but no charges have been filed.
