Joss Stone: two men arrested over singer ‘murder plot’

Two armed men have been arrested in Devon over a suspected “murder plot” involving Joss Stone, the international singing star and close friend of the Duke of Cambridge, police said.

Detectives found the two men outside her isolated country home in an east Devon village with a cache of weapons inside their car including swords, rope and a body bag.

The pair, who have not been named, also alleged to have had plans to the British soul singer’s home and aerial photos of her rural property.

Police said the two men, aged 30 and 33, were arrested near the village, which cannot be identified for legal reasons, at 10am on Monday.

They were being questioned over the alleged conspiracy to “cause her some really serious harm”.

They remain in police custody at a police station in Exeter on Wednesday. Up to 20 detectives from the major crime unit are involved in the inquiry.

It remains unclear if the multi-million pound star, who is close friends with Duke of Cambridge, was at home although it is thought she is due to start a new music tour next month.

Stone, 24, lives in her adopted Devon when she is not touring the world. She was a guest at the Royal Wedding after developing a close friendship with the second in line to the throne.

A spokesman for Stone, who performed at the Concert for Diana in 2007, said the singer was aware of the arrests and was being kept up to date by the police.

Police sources say the pair were stopped after being spotted by neighbours as they drove around country retreat’s lanes in a red Fiat Punto. They were originally arrested for possession of offensive weapons and being equipped to steal.

Police said the pair had travelled 250 miles from the Manchester area before they were arrested in Devon.

They are being questioned by detectives having been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to cause the singer serious harm, potentially murder.

Police originally held the pair on suspicion of conspiracy to commit grevious bodily harm with intent but overnight upgraded that to conspiracy to rob and murder.

“The pair were brought in on Tuesday morning and are in the cells,” said a source close to the investigation.

“They are being quizzed about a plot to cause Joss Stone really serious harm.

“They have their solicitors with them but the police want to know what lies behind this.”

The source added: “The police want to know if this alleged conspiracy is about her money and fame or just some kind of resentment over her success.

“But this will make her feel very vulnerable living on the outskirts of a quiet and isolated village in Devon when she isn’t touring around the world.

“She is due to go on tour next month with gigs in Europe.”

They added: “It looks like this pair had an A-Z of what they were planning to do.

“A body bag, swords and maps of where she lives in mid Devon were recovered.

“It looks like they were going to do her really nasty harm if they didn’t get what they wanted.”

On Wednesday morning, police officers stood guard in front of the ornate gates outside the house, which is in a quiet countryside road.

About 11.30am, a white sports car pulled up and a young man, who identified himself as “Dom” for the security system, was let into the property.

One of Stone’s neighbours, Florence Webber, said the rural area was usually quiet.

“You never think anything like this is going to happen in a place like this,” she said.

“We didn’t know it had happened until this morning. It is a quiet area. I don’t know that she (Stone) is there that often.”

As well as staying at her home in east Devon, her mother runs a popular music haunt called Mama Stones nightspot in Exeter.

Stone, whom the Sunday Times Rich list said was worth more than £9 million, is in the top five biggest earning female UK singing stars. She is also the fifth wealthiest British and Irish pop star aged under 30.

Chief investigator Det Insp Steve Parker, of Devon and Cornwall police, said: “The two men in custody had in their possession information relating to an individual in the Cullompton area and items that lead us to suspect that they may have intended to commit a criminal offence.

“Police enquiries continue and the men remain in custody.

“We’re unable to say anymore at this time but I would like to thank the local residents for reporting the suspicious car.”

He added: “Our officers are currently carrying out reassurance patrols and it’s important to stress that no properties have been burgled and no individuals have been harmed.”

A Devon and Cornwall spokesman said: “Police attended an address… on Monday after alert residents notified officers about a suspicious looking vehicle.

“Officers attended the area at around 10am and subsequently arrested the occupants of a red Fiat Punto.

“A 30 year old man was arrested for driving whilst disqualified, possession of an offensive weapon and going equipped to burgle/steal.”

He added: “A second man, aged 33, was arrested for possession of an offensive weapon and going equipped to burgle steal. Both men remain in police custody.”

Two men from Manchester are being held on suspicion of conspiracy to murder and rob after being arrested near the Devon home of singer Joss Stone.

The men, aged 33 and 30, were arrested after a suspicious vehicle was seen in the Cullompton area on Monday.

A police source said they were found with swords, plans of the singer’s home and a body bag, BBC South West Home Affairs Correspondent Simon Hall said.

Miss Stone is aware of the arrests and later said she was “absolutely fine”.

Mr Hall said the senior police source also confirmed that ropes and forensic-style overalls were found on the men.

It has not been disclosed if Miss Stone was at the property at the time.

‘Life as normal’

However, her mother, Wendy, was seen at the house on Wednesday.

Her publicist said Miss Stone was being kept informed of developments by Devon and Cornwall Police.

The singer later said she was “absolutely fine and getting on with life as normal”.

The men were initially arrested for possession of offensive weapons and being equipped to steal.

The two are being questioned at Heavitree police station in Exeter.

Devon and Cornwall Police said: “Police attended an address in Cullompton after alert residents notified officers about a suspicious-looking vehicle.

Police have been on patrol near the property

“Officers attended the area at around 1000 BST and subsequently arrested the occupants of a red Fiat Punto.

“Major crime detectives are continuing to investigate.”

Officers were questioning households in the area and were on patrol near the property on Wednesday morning.

The metal gates of Miss Stone’s house have also been boarded up.

Det Insp Steve Parker, of Devon and Cornwall Police, who is leading the investigation, thanked residents for reporting the suspicious car.

He added: “Our officers are currently carrying out reassurance patrols and it’s important to stress that no properties have been burgled and no individuals have been harmed.”

Last month, the Sunday Times Rich List placed 24-year-old Miss Stone – who was born in Kent but grew up in Devon – as the fifth wealthiest British and Irish pop star aged under 30, with a fortune of about £9m.

After releasing her first album, The Soul Sessions, in 2003, she had her first hit – Fell In Love With A Boy – in 2004, aged 16.

After just turning 17, she stormed the Brit Awards, picking up gongs for British Female Solo Artist and British Urban Act.
