Ben Crane plotted, plodded and methodically captured his third PGA Tour victory on Sunday at the Farmers Insurance Open, overtaking Ryuji Imada at the third hole and never looking back. He came from two strokes off the pace with a two-under-par 70 that gave him a one-stroke victory over three players.

The reason Crane, 33, never bothered to look behind him — where he would have seen no one gaining on him — was because he did not know he was leading the tournament. And when he finally tapped in a 2-foot par putt for a total of 13-under 275, he did not know he had won.

“Actually, the first person that told me was Ryuji,” Crane said. “He goes, ‘Congratulations.’ And I go, ‘Did I win?’ And he kind of looks at me. I said, ‘Did I win the tournament?’ And he’s like, ‘Uh, yeah.’ ”
