February 20, 2013              1:32 PM ET

Clint Bowyer just settled into his seat for Daytona 500 Media Day and finished answering the first question when an event organizer announced that Dale Earnhardt Jr. had arrived.

“Oh, there goes my interview,” Bowyer said with a laugh. “Thank you guys it’s been a great talk. See you next year.”

But when it comes to compelling stories, Bowyer has one to tell.

The 33-year-old Emporia, Kansas native will start his eighth season in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series. After eight years with Richard Childress Racing in Cup and Nationwide, Bowyer moved to Michael Waltrip Racing for 2012 and enjoyed his best season to date.

Throughout the Chase for the Sprint Cup, Bowyer’s accomplishments were overshadowed as Brad Keselowski and Jimmie Johnson battled it out for the title. But the No. 15 team remained in the hunt during the final 10 races.

When Johnson experienced a gear issue in the season finale at Miami Homestead Speedway, Bowyer capitalized and finished second in the point standings.

For Bowyer, it was a pleasant surprise. No one anticipated that when Bowyer left RCR, long considered one of the anchor organizations of NASCAR, he would not only post a career-high three wins, 10 top-fives and 23 top-10 finishes let alone become the runner-up for the championship.

“Thanks,” Bowyer replied in a self-deprecatory manner as he’s reminded what the initial outlook was for the No. 15 team at the start of last year. Yet with the investment that co-owner Rob Kauffman made with the team, including the upgrades in personnel and technology over the last few years, it has elevated MWR into one of the elite operations in the sport.
Through Bowyer’s past experiences at RCR, he is cognizant of the potential for complacency after a successful season. And after committing himself to the organization, Bowyer warns of falling into that trap in his current situation.

“We had a great year last year,” Bowyer said. “Right now in 2013, the year doesn’t mean anything. We’ve got to prove ourselves all over again and it’s even harder this time. Nobody expected us to do that. We didn’t have any pressure and we didn’t have any expectations. We just went out and had fun and enjoyed every week and just naturally or effortlessly had success week in and week out.

“It is different now. We’ve got expectations — not from you guys (the media), not from the fans, but from within. We expect to do that and I’ve been around long enough to know that can be a danger.”

Another “danger” that has plagued runner-ups over the last few years has been the second-place hangover. For drivers that exerted tremendous energy to make the Chase and contend for the title, the challenge has been to amass an equal amount of fight the following year. For Bowyer, finishing second last year was anything but a letdown.

“People call it a jinx – whatever,” Bowyer said. “Here’s the thing, any kind of sport – pick the Olympics. A guy trains his whole life, especially the years leading up to it and finishes second. That’s a huge letdown. We had nothing to be ashamed of to finish in second place.

“There was just one great thing after another happening at MWR last year. We won races with a team built from scratch over the offseason. Went into a team that had never been proven before and went out and proved a big point. We finished second in the points and had one bad weekend over the whole year — truly had one bad weekend that just sucked. I’ll take that any day. I will sign up for that right now.”

That weekend – at Phoenix where he was dumped by four-time champion Jeff Gordon, who accused Bowyer of racing him too hard – earned the driver of the No. 15 Toyota Camry more recognition than his accomplishments on the track. While the feud still looms, Bowyer would just as soon leave the incident in the rearview mirror and concentrate on 2013.

On Thursday, Bowyer will start ninth in the second Budweiser Duel. While he’s proved his restrictor plate prowess with two wins at Talladega, Bowyer’s not equaled that success at Daytona where he’s posted just two top-five finishes in 14 starts.

Still, Bowyer appears encouraged by the progress MWR has made with the new Generation 6 Toyota Camry.

“Certainly, we’re going to work hard,” Bowyer said. “I like the things I’ve seen. I like the testing. Daytona – our car was fast and more importantly we went to Charlotte and intermediate race tracks and had good speed right off the truck. The very first time I was ever in a car – one of the Gen-6 cars on an intermediate track was at Charlotte and we went right to the top of the board and was there the whole morning session. I was like, ‘Put it back in the box and let’s go racing.’ That showed me that hopefully we picked up right where we left off.”

After MWR qualified two drivers – Bowyer and Martin Truex Jr. – for the Chase last season, team owner Michael Waltrip acknowledges that the questions he answers now regarding his organization “are a lot more fun” than the inquisition he received prior to 2012’s successful run.

“It seems like we’re more respected,” Waltrip said. “I don’t think if we just bounced in and had 2012 right off the bat that we would have gained that type of respect. We worked really hard to be able to enjoy some success in 2012.

“Our teams appear to be on plane with the best. So we just expect to win more races than we did last year and race for the championship this year.”

In two of the most important practices of the year, it’d be two young drivers topping the charts at the end of each session.

Joey Logano, who made the switch from Joe Gibbs Racing to Penske Racing over the off-season, topped the first session with a speed of 195.410 mph. He has been working at gaining that solid relationship with his new crew chief.

“I think like any other relationship you have to work at it,” he said. “Whether it is a work relationship or if you are dating some girl, you have to work at that stuff. That is just part of life. You have to have someone that understands that and is willing to work on things that maybe seem goofy but will help you in the high pressure situations and trying to win a race and need to make a quick decision.”

Rookie Austin Dillon was second on the charts, seven one-hundredths off of Logano. Fellow rookie Danica Patrick was third, followed by Jeff Burton and Kasey Kahne.

In the second session, it’d be Danica Patrick topping the charts in her Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet as she begins her first full Cup Series season. She timed in at a speed of 196.220 mph.

“We’re trying to be smart. …Trying to be as accurate as possible,” she said following the second practice of the day. “I think so far, so good at Daytona. This is a testament to how consistent the (new) car is.”

Team owner Tony Stewart was second on the speed charts, timing in at 195.363 mph. Kyle Busch was third, followed by Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jamie McMurray. Logano was ninth on the charts in the second session.

The only driver running into problems was Juan Pablo Montoya, who blew an engine midway through his second practice session..

“We will change the motor and give it a good go tomorrow in qualifying,” said the driver of the No. 42 Target Chevrolet. “I think tonight is going to be a fun night and just looking forward to the (Daytona) 500.”

February 17, 2013                 10:06 a.m.

It took only 15 laps into the Sprint Unlimited race Saturday night for the first big crash of the NASCAR season.

The race, featuring the new Gen-6 cars, is more of an exhibition before the season-opening Daytona 500 next weekend, but it provided the usual thrills and chills as Kevin Harvick outlasted 19 rivals to take the checkered flag.

Several big-name drivers were knocked out on Lap 15 when Tony Stewart, who was in second place, made a move down the track and his car made contact with the car of Marcos Ambrose.

By the time the chain-reaction crash involving nine drivers was sorted out, seven cars were too damaged to continue racing, including that of defending race winner Kyle Busch, who had already wrecked a car in practice.

Also taken out were Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson from Hendrick MotorsportsMark Martin and Kurt Busch.

“I didn’t see much. I was just cruising along and I saw sparks in front of me — I knew that wasn’t good,” Johnson said.

Greg Biffle finished second and Joey Logano was third in his Penske Racing debut. Stewart was fourth and Matt Kenseth finished fifth in his Joe Gibbs Racing debut.

As for racing in the new Gen-6 cars, Harvick said the drivers and teams have more adjustments to make.

“Still a lot to be learned,” Harvick said. “When you put 43 [cars] out, there things will move and shift a lot easier.

“It’s going to be a pack, absolutely. I don’t think there’s going to be too many chances. You’ll see some cars break away. I think if you turn on a 2000 race, one of those races, it’s going to be very similar.”

Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished eighth in the Sprint Unlimited on Saturday night but never really considered himself a contender. He believes that Kevin Harvick, Tony Stewart and Matt Kenseth were the class of the field and believes he was just a little bit off from contending for the win.

While some drivers complained about the lack of grip in the middle of a run, Earnhardt had no such concerns and says he just didn’t make the right moves in the closing laps.

“I could get runs and charge up into the top five,” Earnhardt said. “But it didn’t like the clean air up there. It got real draggy, just real slow up front. The no. 20 had a really great car and the no. 14 was fast but they are real sharp at plate racing.

“I just didn’t make enough of the right moves or have enough car to get it going there at the end.”

Earnhardt nearly lost a lap to the leaders at the end of the second segment and there was concern that he suffered an engine failure. His team, led by crew chief Steve Letarte, diagnosed the car during the intermission and found no problems. Earnhardt now believes that he just lost the draft.

“Well I thought I had an issue with the engine but it was just that the draft was easy to lose,” Earnhardt said. “With this spoiler on the back, it’s really easy to lose the draft because air gets to your nose pretty quick, and the distance of the draft isn’t as far back as it used to be off the car in front of you. So you can lose it pretty quickly. You have to be real careful.”

The Sprint Cup Series debuted a new car in the Sprint Unlimited and Earnhardt believes it will change the way drivers draft at plate races this season. Earnhardt says the new car, combined with very little draft practice, was the cause of the multicar accident on lap 14 and that drivers have to adjust to the new style of drafting.

“A lot of the guys that weren’t in this race haven’t been in real race conditions with this car yet,” Earnhardt added. “So, half the field still has a lot to learn; a crash course you know…

“The bumpers aren’t perfect. They are imperfect when they line up, and that is going to cause some action and some drama out there. That is the way it used to be, and I think everybody is okay with that. The drafting and the way you work the draft, I think everybody is still kind of learning that. I learned a lot tonight, but I still think there is a ton to learn.”

Matt Kenseth stared at the front end of his No. 20 Toyota in dismay, looking over the damage sustained in a crash he accidentally caused.

No one — whether a race car driver or average Joe who rolls off a dealership lot — wants to wreck a new ride.

Kenseth was only eight laps into Friday’s Sprint Unlimited practice session at Daytona International Speedway when, not realizing Kurt Busch suddenly had a burst of speed to his inside, drifted down the track across Busch’s nose and caused a five-car wreck.

It was “100% my fault,” Kenseth said as his crew evaluated the damage.

“I had no idea he was there,” he added. “… It’s not how you want to start. You don’t want to have things like this happen.”

Aside from Kenseth and Busch, Carl Edwards, Juan Pablo Montoya and Mark Martin also sustained damage. They were running in a pack as soon as practice began, Martin said, because it was important to learn how NASCAR’s new Gen 6 cars handled in the draft before Saturday night’s exhibition race.

“Half the guys couldn’t afford for that to happen,” Martin said. “We talked about it, and I wanted to race. I wanted to come here to race, I wanted to learn. A lot of them are just going to learn tomorrow night. Well, I’d like to be a step ahead.”

After the wreck, drivers spent the rest of practice in calmer conditions. Kyle Busch said teams were “playing chicken” and wouldn’t be drafting much.

In the second practice, only 12 cars took a lap — and drivers decided not to form a pack.

The early crash brought back memories of January’s three-day test session here. When teams decided to draft in January, Dale Earnhardt Jr. triggered a multi-car wreck — and no one drafted again.

Drivers have little experience in race conditions with the Gen 6 cars, which are officially making their debut this week. Since no one knows quite how they’ll handle in the draft, there are concerns that the Daytona 500 on the 2.5-mile oval could turn into a crashfest.

“I wanted to come here and race, not practicing by myself or practicing with a few guys,” Martin said. “That’s not really how you get ready for it.”

Kevin Harvick (197.364 mph) was fastest in the first practice session, followed by Aric Almirola (197.316), Greg Biffle, Kasey Kahne and Martin Truex Jr.

In the evening session, speeds were a bit slower: Denny Hamlin was fastest at 196.053 mph, followed by Joey Logano and Biffle.

Tony Stewart had perhaps the best day in Daytona 500 qualifying, placing Stewart-Haas Racing cars in first, fourth and fifth place. This includes polesitter Danica Patrick, who became the first woman to win a pole in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series — and in the Daytona 500, no less.

Stewart, who qualified fifth, doesn’t know what the difference was between his own lap and Patrick’s but attributed teamwork as one of the principal reasons for her team’s pole run on Sunday. Stewart even went as far to joke that Patrick has two boyfriends – fellow driver Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and crew chief Tony Gibson.

“They’re all but holding hands in the shop when they are there every day,” Stewart quipped. “It’s good for me to see that as an owner. I like to see that sort of chemistry. Ryan (Newman) is happy being back with Matt (Borland). Tony (Gibson) and Danica are happy and I’m happy with Steve. That’s something to be said with having three teams that the drivers and teams are getting along and that goes a long way.”

Stewart doesn’t mind that he didn’t win the pole. As an owner, he was more concerned about locking Patrick into the front row and personally focused on winning his first Daytona 500.

“My eye is still on next Sunday,” Stewart said. “Ownership side this Sunday, next Sunday (the Daytona 500), that’s what I want from the driver’s side.

Unlike in previous years, where Stewart would know by qualifying or the qualifying races if he had a car that was capable of winning, the three-time Series champion doesn’t think he will have a grasp on how good his car is until the Sunday of the race.

“I think, the bigger the packs are, the more things will change,” Stewart said. “Like I said, we’ll see have the field race in each race on Thursday, then Sunday you’ll see 43 cars.

“I think you’ll learn early in the 500 what you got and then it’s a matter of positioning yourself at the end of the race, middle parts of the race, to be in the right spot at the end.”
