Lemont siblings held on $2 million bail in jewelry robberies

5:48 p.m. CDT, September 18, 2011

Two suburban siblings remained held Sunday on $2 million bail each after they
were accused of using a replica gun to stick up mostly immigrant women standing
alone on Chicago’s South and Southwest sides.

Jaclyn Madera, 28, and her brother, Steven, 36, both of Lemont,
are charged with multiple counts of armed robbery.

Prosecutors said today that Jaclyn Madera drove while her brother,
armed with the fake gun, jumped out and snatched gold necklaces off the necks of
his victims as they stood on the street in six reported incidents in the past
several weeks. At least one victim was injured.

“In all the incidents, she acted as the getaway driver,” Assistant
Cook State’s Attorney Melissa Howlett said. “Two of her children were in the car
during some of the incidents.”

Police arrested the siblings about 7 p.m. Thursday in the Brighton
Park neighborhood after officers spotted them on the 4600 block of South Mozart
in a white 1999 Oldsmobile van that fit the description of the one used during
the crimes. Howlett told Cook Judge Ramon Ocasio that Jaclyn Madera provided
police with a written statement in which she confessed to knowing her brother
was armed with the replica gun and planned to rob pedestrians.

Ocasio set $2 million bail for each during separate weekend court
appearances today and Saturday.

Steven Madera also faces an aggravated battery charge in
connection with having a fake weapon, while his sister is charged with driving
while her license was suspended or revoked.

The six victims, most of them women, later identified the
siblings, according to a police report. The robberies occurred on the 4200 block
of West 56th Street, 5200 block of South Harding Avenue, 2900 block of West 38th
Place and 3000 block of West 41st Street.

A woman who identified herself as the pair’s mother hung up when
the Tribune called for comment. The Maderas are due back in court on Sept. 22.
