Rajat Gupta, shown in 2008, has surrendered to the FBI

October 26, 2011      6:48 am

Rajat Gupta, a former Goldman Sachs board member accused by regulators of passing along confidential corporate information, has surrendered to the FBI.

Gupta is in custody, according to the Associated Press. Charges were not immediately disclosed, but the Securities and Exchange Commission in March accused Gupta of giving inside information about Goldman Sachs to his friend and business partner Raj Rajaratnam.

Gupta served on the boards of Procter & Gamble and the parent company for American Airlines but after being hit with the SEC accusations he stepped down from those positions.

Gupta followed with a lawsuit in March in which he complained about the SEC’s decision to go after him in front of an SEC administrative judge instead of in federal court, where other defendants connected to Rajaratnam had been charged. He said he’d been “unfairly and unconstitutionally” singled out.

Gupta in August agreed to drop the lawsuit as the SEC pledged to file any lawsuit over the same matter in federal court.

At the time of the charges, a lawyer for Gupta insisted that his client had done nothing wrong. Gupta’s lawsuit said there was no “plausible reason why Mr. Gupta would have deviated from a lifetime of probity and a career dedicated to safeguarding corporate confidences.”

But, as the AP reported, Gupta’s name featured prominently at the criminal trial earlier this year of Rajaratnam, who received an 11-year prison term, the longest sentence ever for an insider-trading case. But prosecutors had sought 19 to 24 years. The founder of Galleon Group hedge funds was given a lesser sentence in part because of advanced diabetes.

Javaris Crittenton

August 29, 2011    4:00 pm

Former Laker Javaris Crittenton, wanted because of his alleged involvement in a fatal drive-by shooting in Atlanta, will surrender to local authorities Tuesday, his lawyer told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“Mr. Crittenton wants to clear his name,” Brian Steel told the newspaper. “He’s innocent of the charges.”

Authorities allege that Crittenton fatally shot Jullian Jones on Aug. 19 in the woman’s driveway in Atlanta. Police told the Journal-Constitution that Crittenton, 23, had reported being robbed of jewelry earlier this year and might have mistaken Jones as the thief when he opened fire as he drove by in a sport utility vehicle. Police had been seaching for him for several days, and the FBI was correct in believing Crittenton was in Los Angeles. He reportedly plans to take a red-eye flight from Los Angeles and arrive in Atlanta on Tuesday morning.

Crittenton played a limited role with the Lakers after they selected him with the 19th pick in the 2007 NBA draft, appearing in 22 games and averaging 3.3 points. But he was part of the seven-player trade with the Memphis Grizzlies that sent Pau Gasol to the Lakers.

Crittenton pleaded guilty and was sentenced to probation on a misdemeanor gun possession charge stemming from his confrontation with teammate Gilbert Arenas in the Washington Wizards’ locker room in 2009. Both players were fined and suspended by the NBA for the rest of the season.
