One of the most popular personalities in all of sports, Helio Castroneves – Team Penske’s elder statesman – has accomplished much in his illustrious career, yet he remains passionate in his desire to achieve much more. Castroneves returns for his 13th season with Team Penske in 2012 driving the No. 3 Shell-V-Power Pennzoil-Ultra/AAA/Automobile Club of Southern California Indy car.
Known for his electric smile and enthusiasm, Castroneves has driven and danced his way into the hearts and minds of people around the world. As the only active driver to have earned the distinction of being a three-time winner of the Indianapolis 500 and the only race car driver ever to become a “Dancing with the Stars” Champion, Castroneves in many ways is in a league of his own.
In 2011 the Sao Paulo, Brazil native demonstrated once again the speed, skills and determination to be considered among the elite in the IZOD IndyCar Series. Castroneves overcame a number of unfortunate on-track events to finish 11th in the final standings, his first placement outside of the top-10 since 2001.
After a slow start to 2011 which saw him record only one top-10 finish in the first five races, Castroneves led laps in both races of the Firestone Twin 275s in Texas and finished the second race in fourth place. The following week in Milwaukee he started from the front row and was leading late into the race before a punctured tire forced him to make a pit stop and finish ninth. After overcoming another punctured tire in Iowa to finish seventh, Castroneves was part of a Team Penske one-two finish in Edmonton, where he led a lap and placed second behind Will Power. A month later at Infineon Raceway, Castroneves would again start from the front row and finish second to teammate Power as Team Penske claimed an historic 1-2-3 result. Although Castroneves’ IndyCar record of 11 consecutive seasons with a victory and a pole position came to an end in 2011, he added to his impressive resume of top-five finishes (100). He ranks among the top three active drivers with 25 career victories and he is positioned among the all-time IndyCar leaders in most wins from the pole (nine), pole positions (38) and career laps led (4,468) entering 2012.
Castroneves, who became the first driver to win back-to-back Indy 500s in his first two starts at the Brickyard in 2001 and 2002 and won the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing” again in 2009, is known for his signature victory celebration of climbing the fence after taking the checkered flag. His great attitude, signature smile and his outbursts of unbridled enthusiasm make him one of the true stars of motorsports. These attributes have helped land him on the pages of some of the top publications in the world including People, Newsweek, TV Guide, Esquire and Maxim.
In 2007, Castroneves brought his incredible passion for life to a much wider audience when he competed on ABC’s hit television show, “Dancing with the Stars.” The combination of his charismatic personality, dedicated training and his dancing skills won him the hearts of millions of new fans and the coveted Mirror Ball trophy. He has since parlayed his foray in the entertainment world into working as an occasional correspondent for “Entertainment Tonight.” In the fall of 2010, Castroneves was invited back to the set of “Dancing with the Stars” to serve as a judge on the show after being voted as one of the top-10 best dances from the first 10 seasons of “DWTS.”
Castroneves’ celebrity status has afforded him an array of opportunities worldwide, the highlight of which came in 2004, when he had the once-in-a-lifetime experience of a private audience with Pope John Paul II while visiting Vatican City. His collection of vehicles includes the 2001 Indianapolis 500 Pace Vehicle Oldsmobile Bravada; a 50th Anniversary Special Edition Chevrolet Corvette, which he received for winning the 2002 Indianapolis 500, and his latest addition – a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro Indianapolis 500 Pace Car.
In May of 2010, Castroneves also released a popular book about his life and how he’s met its challenges. “Victory Road – The Ride of My Life” chronicled Castroneves’ dramatic rise to stardom and how he handled his high-profile tax case and his triumphant return to racing.
Castroneves enters the 2012 season once again ready to compete for the IZOD IndyCar Series championship for Team Penske and battle for a record-tying fourth Indy 500 victory. Castroneves, girlfriend Adriana Henao, and their daughter, Mikaella, reside in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
