Things got a bit heated in the dying seconds of the first period between the New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday night.

After getting dumped to the ice by Rangers defenseman Marc Staal, Penguins star Evgeni Malkin appeared to have violently struck Staal in the helmet with his stick. Staal was in the process of falling when Malkin, from a prone position, swung his stick in Staal’s direction. Malkin was not penalized on the play.

Staal, who sat out 36 games last season with a concussion, was described as incredulous after the game.

While addressing the media after New York’s 3-0 loss to the Pens, Staal said, “He tomahawked me right on top of the helmet. He dazed me. I don’t know how that’s not called. I understand we’re battling in front of the net, but he’s hitting down like he’s chopping wood across my head.”

Maybe Malkin was just testing the flex on his stick.

With no news coming out of the department of player safety in regard to this incident as of yet, it appears Malkin will escape any punishment. That is a bit of a surprise considering previous high-sticking incidents that have come under review.

The NHL suspended Pierre-Marc Bouchard for two games early last season for a high-sticking incident against Columbus’ Matt Calvert. Calvert, who was struck in the face, was injured on the play. However, in that instance, safety czar Brendan Shanahan asserted “Regardless of where the slash was intended or whether Calvert’s lifting of the stick steered the slash up into the face area, Bouchard is responsible for his stick and the end result.”

Due to the force with which Malkin made contact with Staal and the fact that it struck Staal’s head, this definitely deserves another look from Shanahan and company. Even if Malkin didn’t intend to hit Staal’s head, he is supposed to be responsible for his stick and the result.

The Mavericks have their work cut out for them tonight in the finale of a long, grinding and mostly disappointing four-game road trip.

All Kevin Durant has done in two previous meetings this season is average 46 points.

He will be a defensive priority, obviously.

“We got to do a lot better,” coach Rick Carlisle said this morning after the Mavericks’ shootaround. “He’s a great player, but the other thing is he’s extremely opportunistic. Two or three times a game, they get you when they get an offensive rebound and they look to the 3-point line and they find him standing out there. If nobody’s guarding, he knocks down that shot. There’s just a lot of little things that lead to big problems.”

There was a time when the Mavericks were the big brother to Oklahoma City’s rising young stars. Clearly, the tables have turned in the last two seasons. The Thunder swept the Mavericks in the first round of the playoffs last season and they clearly have learned from some of the hard knocks they took in 2011, which included a Western Conference finals loss to the eventual NBA champion Mavericks.

Both games this season have gone to overtime, and both have gone to OKC.

“We’re making too many mistakes,” Nowitzki said. “It seems like we had OKC’s number for a long time, especially that year we won the championship. And since then we can’t beat ‘em in close games for some reason. So it’s frustrating, but we got to limit our mistakes down the stretch. That’s what it comes down to.”

Asked how much the Thunder has grown in two seasons, Nowitzki said: “They took a huge step. They went to the Finals last year and to me, they were actually the favorites to win it the way they ran through the whole Western Conference. Kevin’s playing an amazing all-around game. He’s tough and obviously (Russell) Westbrook attacks whenever he can. This is about as tough a road test as it gets.

“Obviously, now they’re more experienced. Going through tough times, you learn from losing tough games. They got a really tough team.”

Star Wars: The Old Republic Begins Free To Play November 15, 2012

November 8, 2012

If you are a current or former player of Star Wars: The Old Republic, you probably spent the last few months wondering when Bioware would finally take the plunge and offer the game free of charge. Well, my friends, your waiting days are over, and starting on November 15, 2012, Star Wars will finally offer a true free to play alternative.

Players will be able to choose between a monthly subscription for $14.99 or the free to play option. Subscribers will continue to have full access to every part of the game and free to play users will be able to level from 1 to 50 without restrictions. Apart from leveling, there are several important limitations on free to play accounts.

Free To Play Restrictions:

Daily Locks on Flash Points
No Armor Painting
Weekly Locks on Battlegrounds
Later access to Mounts
Lower Experience gains
Limited access to Galactic Market
No Character Title Display
No Legacy Name Display
Time restriction on General Chat usage

Free to play will offer players the opportunity to increase their access by paying a fee to the in-game store (The Cartel Market). If you love raiding, you can pay a small amount and get unlimited monthly access to all the flash points and instances. If you thrive on Player vs. Player, it will cost you a few dollars a month to gain unlimited access to the battlegrounds. This is a brilliant move on Bioware’s part; it allows players to pick and choose the parts of the game they truly enjoy, instead of continuing to pay for the stuff they will never use.

Subscribers to Star Wars: The Old Republic may be tempted to feel a bit put out after paying $60 or more for the game and $14.99 a month for almost a year. However, Bioware is doing their best to make sure players who continue to make a monthly payment will be rewarded. In addition to unlimited access and all perks that go with it, subscribers will be given Cartel Coins to spend in the Cartel Market. They will receive coins for time played prior to the introduction of free to play and more coins for each month going forward. Subscribers will also receive special in-game perks including two more quick slot bars and a new Cargo Hold tab.

What Does This Mean For Gamers?

Fans of Star Wars are hoping this will be just what the doctor ordered to save the troubled game. Everyone had such high hopes when we played the game for the very first time on December 20, 2011. Sadly, SW: TOR did not perform up to expectations. Players were disappointed by the lack of end game content and PVP was a total mess. Over a period of a three or four months, SW: TOR went from a peak of 1.7 million paying customers to 700,000 subscribers.

The online gaming industry has begun to favor free to play over paid access. Even World Of Warcraft has seen a drop in their subscriber base, and the highly anticipated title from Funcom,The Secret World, has struggled to attract players willing to shell out $14.99 a month.

Many top tier titles have already made the move to free to play, including Aion, Lord Of The Rings Online and Guild Wars 2. While games like Rift, Tera, and The Secret World may be able to survive with 300, 000 to 500,000 subscribers, Bioware spent 250 million dollars to create Star Wars: The Old Republic and the company expected to give WOW a run for their money. Bioware needs three to five million regular players to consider this game a major success.

Now we have a free to play option for SW: TOR and we can only hope the game makes a comeback. It would be wonderful to see old friends and guildmates return to the game. It would also be great to welcome a virtual flood of new faces, who are finally willing to play Star Wars: The Old Republic because they don’t have to pay $14.99 a month and $60 for the game.

I still do not know if my friends will return. My guild is almost non-existent and I haven’t seen a familiar face in months. Currently, I only log on once a week to check on my account, but I do plan to give Star Wars: The Old Republic one final chance.

No matter how great free to play sounds, Bioware needs to keep their promise and fix the game. They must add new content on a regular basis, improve world PVP, and vastly expand the all important endgame. If they can do that, then old players will return and new players will try the game. If Bioware ignores the gameplay issues and only focuses on free to play, then they will fail and Star Wars: The Old Republic will be finished. There may still be enough good will in the player community to give the game a second chance but there will never be a third chance.

November 15th, 2012

11 + 15 +2+0+1+2 = 31 = Star Wars:  The Old Republic’s going free online life lesson = Competition.  Competitive.  Striving to be #1.  Outdoing itself.  Stirring things up.  Free-for-all.

David H. Petraeus, the director of the Central Intelligence Agency, resigned on Friday after issuing a statement saying that he had engaged in an extramarital affair.

The sudden development came just days after President Obama won re-election to a second term. Mr. Petraeus, a highly decorated general who had led the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, had been expected to remain in the president’s administration.

Instead, Mr. Petraeus said in the statement that the president accepted his resignation on Friday after he had informed him of his indiscretion a day earlier.

“After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair,” Mr. Petraeus wrote. “Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours. This afternoon, the president graciously accepted my resignation.”

Mr. Obama released a statement praising Mr. Petraeus for his “extraordinary service” to the country and saying that Michael J. Morell, the deputy director of the C.I.A., would take over once again as acting director. He served in that position briefly after Leon E. Panetta left the agency last year.

“By any measure, through his lifetime of service, David Petraeus has made our country safer and stronger,” the president said. Without directly addressing the affair, Mr. Obama added: “Going forward, my thoughts and prayers are with Dave and Holly Petraeus, who has done so much to help military families through her own work. I wish them the very best at this difficult time.” Ms. Petraeus is the assistant director of the Office of Servicemember Affairs at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

The development came as a shock to the national security establishment. In a statement, James R. Clapper, the director of national intelligence, called the decision “a loss” to the country.

“Dave’s decision to step down represents the loss of one of our nation’s most respected public servants.” Mr. Clapper wrote. “From his long, illustrious Army career to his leadership at the helm of C.I.A., Dave has redefined what it means to serve and sacrifice for one’s country.”

By acknowleding an extramarital affair, Mr. Petraeus, 60, was confronting a sensitive issue for a spy chief. Intelligence agencies are often concerned about the possibility that agents who engage in such behavior could be blackmailed for information.

In his statement, Mr. Petraeus did not provide any details about his behavior, saying that he asked the president to be allowed “for personal reasons” to resign.

Mr. Petraeus praised his colleagues at the C.I.A.’s headquarters in Langley, Va., calling them “truly exceptional in every regard” and thanking them for their service to the country. He made it clear that his departure was not how he had envisioned ending a storied career in the military and in intelligence.

“Teddy Roosevelt once observed that life’s greatest gift is the opportunity to work hard at work worth doing,” he said. “I will always treasure my opportunity to have done that with you, and I will always regret the circumstances that brought that work with you to an end.”

Over the last several years, Mr. Petraeus had become one of the most recognizable military officials, serving as the public face of the war effort in Congress and on television.

Under President George W. Bush, Mr. Petraeus was credited for helping to develop and put in place the “surge” in troops in Iraq that helped wind down the war in that country. Mr. Petraeus was moved to Afghanistan in 2010 after Mr. Obama fired General Stanley H. McChrystal over comments he made to a magazine reporter.

In Afghanistan, Mr. Petraeus led the push for a similar increase in troops ordered by Mr. Obama, but he was unable to replicate the success he had in the Iraq conflict.

Last year, Mr. Obama persuaded Mr. Petraeus to leave the Army after 37 years to lead the C.I.A., succeeding Mr. Panetta, who moved to the Defense Department.

JermaineJacksun.jpg

23:03 EST                 7 November 2012

It seems to have come to him in a moment of illumination.

For Jermaine Jackson has lodged legal papers in a bid to change the spelling of his last name to ‘Jacksun.’

The bizarre move has purportedly been made for ‘artistic reasons,’  and if it is successful then his passport, bank cards and other documents will boast the new moniker.

The 57-year-old brother of the late Prince of Pop Michael filed his petition at the Los Angeles County Superior Court on Monday, according to TMZ.

A hearing has been scheduled to determine the outcome of his request.

If it is approved the singer will have to publicly announce his name change several times in either a magazine or newspaper over the next few months before it becomes official.

Jermaine became famous as a member of The Jackson 5 in 1968, before splitting the band to strike out on his own in 1975.

He recently released his new album of classic jazz songs I Wish You Love and is currently performing in Europe as part of The Jackson’s Unity Tour with his brothers Jackie, Marlon and Tito.

It remains unclear whether the outfit will change their name to ‘The Jacksons and Jacksun’ in light of the change.

The band have been performing all of their biggest hits including ‘ABC’, ‘I Want You Back’ and ‘I’ll Be There’ as part of the remembrance tour for their late younger brother Michael, who died in 2009.

Jermaine has also been performing some of his solo music during the tour.

Despite a couple of quiet days for the Cardinals’ offense, St. Louis manager Mike Matheny felt no need to shake up his starting lineup for Game 7 of the National League Championship Series at AT&T Park on Monday.

A couple of the Cards’ most essential hitters, notably Allen Craig and Jon Jay, have scuffled during the NLCS. Craig was 3-for-20 in the series entering Monday, while Jay was 5-for-25.

In the past, Matheny has sometimes flipped cleanup man Craig and No. 2 hitter Carlos Beltran when one or the other has slumped. But he said he had little interest in making that move. Nor did he see a better alternative in the leadoff spot than Jay.

“I think about 20 different lineups every night,” Matheny said. “But I keep coming back to what’s been working for us. And there’s a reason. And there was a reason that we were able to make the push that we did, and it was people really finding their spot. It took us a lot longer than it took quite a few other teams to really find that formula in our lineup.

“It’s just a matter of looking over the big picture and seeing what gives us the best chance. Today is not the time to start rewriting anything.”

M. Carpenter back to bench, but at the ready

SAN FRANCISCO — The Cardinals’ bench may not be all that deep, but manager Mike Matheny has one very nice weapon at his disposal, ready to be deployed at the right time. Infielder/outfielder Matt Carpenter was once again not in the lineup Monday night for Game 7 of the National League Championship Series, despite an impressive record against Giants starter Matt Cain.

NLCS

That’s because, in short, there’s no obvious candidate for Carpenter to displace. The left-handed-hitting youngster is an impressive young bat. But the Cardinals have star-level hitters at all four corner positions, so Carpenter’s 5-for-6 mark against Cain isn’t good enough to get him in the starting nine.

“We’ve done this all season,” Matheny said. “He’s been a great fill for whatever we need. But you started looking at him playing in the outfield in the corners, and you’ve got Matt Holliday and Carlos Beltran, and Allen Craig and David Freese on the corners in the infield. Those are guys that have all been valuable parts of our lineup. We don’t deny what Matt’s been able to do against Cain, but if anything does happen with any of our guys along the way, we’ve got a good option.”

Carpenter came off the bench in Game 3 of the NLCS after Beltran injured his left knee. He hit a home run in the Cardinals’ 3-1 win in that game and started again in Game 4, but he returned to the bench for Game 5, when Beltran came back to the lineup. He started Game 6 in Holliday’s absence when the left fielder suffered back spasms.

Wainwright, Lynn available for Game 7 relief

SAN FRANCISCO — There may be a game for the Cardinals in two days, but they’ll deal with that when the time comes. For now, they’re playing a Game 7, and that means everyone who might conceivably be available to pitch, is available to pitch.

Specifically, starters Adam Wainwright and Lance Lynn, who pitched Games 4 and 5 of the National League Championship Series, respectively, were considered available out of the bullpen for the final game of the NLCS.

“The two of them would definitely be ready to go,” said manager Mike Matheny. “It’s all hands on deck right now.”

It’s likely that one of those two would start Game 1 of the World Series if the Cardinals were to advance.

Worth noting

• Cardinals right-hander Jake Westbrook threw a 40-pitch bullpen session on Monday as he continues his recovery from a strained oblique muscle. The club believes Westbrook is healthy enough to be considered for inclusion on a potential World Series roster.

• Beltran’s double on Sunday night was the 24th extra-base hit of his postseason career, in 120 at-bats.

• When Marc Rzepczynski was charged with a run on Sunday night, it ended a streak of eight consecutive postseason appearances without his being scored upon. Rzepczynski has been charged with a run in two of his past 16 postseason games pitched.

The MTV VMAs are many things: entertaining, action-packed and known to showcase and introduce our favorite and future music superstars. Case in point, the VMA debut of Korean viral video phenomenon Psy.

Psy was a surprise guest at Thursday’s main event, brought onstage by host Kevin Hart to talk briefly about his “Gangnam Style” video, which has more than 100 million views on YouTube. The two shared in a brief back-and-forth conversation that ended with Hart trying to emulate the Korean phenom’s signature dance moves from the video.

MTV News was there the moment Psy came offstage, and we spoke with the man about his stage experience, his recent success and his new deal with Justin Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun.

“I cannot believe what’s going on,” Psy said when asked about the success of his video and his road to the VMAs. “The increase [in people knowing who I am] is incredible. I did not expect things like this. I just made a video in Korea and uploaded it and within 50 days, I’m here now.”

And it seems as though he’s not going anywhere but onward and upward anytime soon. In speaking about being signed by Braun, Psy seemed to still be in disbelief about it.

“What I heard from Scooter is that he saw my video and said to his C.O.O., ‘Oh, find him, I want to sign him.’ Scooter found my video seven days after its release,” Psy recalled, adding that he’ll be spending some more time in the U.S. introducing himself to various companies and individuals before going into the recording studio.

“I’m here to promote myself, not the music video,” he said. “Myself [first] and then I’m going to do some work with Scooter.”

So what can we expect from Psy’s upcoming album? Pop songs in Korean and English?

“I can do both, so maybe some [in] English,” he said.

We then asked Psy if Braun had set him up with any producers or if he planned on enlisting any help from industry insiders in Braun’s camp.

“Actually, I’m composing and producing it myself, so I don’t need anyone,” he said.

The war for winning the title of The Ultimate Seductress has just wrapped up! And guess who’s the winner. Well it’s none other than Chikni Chameli Katrina Kaif. But Chammak Challo aka Kareena Kapoor’s fans need not be disappointed. She came a close second, losing out the title to Katrina by some hundred votes.

In case you are wondering what we are talking about, we had floated a poll asking the surfers to vote for the ultimate seductress in Bollywood. And who were the contenders? Katrina Kaif, Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Bipasha Basu, Aishwarya Rai and Vidya Balan battled it out.

SEDUCTRESS NO.4: VIDYA BALAN

Vidya Balan sits gracefully at the fourth position. She garnered 8.99% (153 votes). She went ‘dirty’ for a film and still walked away with a National award. In fact she displayed her bold side in her debut film Parineeta. Her lovemaking sequences with Saif Ali Khan and Sanjay Dutt in the film were high on steamy quotient.

Guru, Salaam-e-Ishq and Ishqiya further accentuated her bold image.

Neil Armstrong’s loved ones said they were “heartbroken” to share the news that the former astronaut and first person to step foot on the moon had died Saturday of complications from heart surgery. Armstrong was 82.

“Neil was our loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend,” the family statement said. “As much as Neil cherished his privacy, he always appreciated the expressions of goodwill from people around the world and from all walks of life.

“While we mourn the loss of a very good man, we also celebrate his remarkable life and hope that it serves as an example to young people around the world to work hard to make their dreams come true, to be willing to explore and push the limits, and to selflessly serve a cause greater than themselves.

“For those who may ask what they can do to honor Neil, we have a simple request. Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink.”

Tuesday August 21, 2012                 3:55am IST

Augusta National Golf Club, home of the Masters golf tournament, finally ended an all-male policy that had endured for 80 years when it announced on Monday that two women would be admitted as members for the first time.

Former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and financier Darla Moore will become the first women to don the renowned green jackets when the Augusta, Georgia, club re-opens for a new season in October.

Augusta National’s male-only status has drawn criticism for years. Ahead of this year’s Masters tournament in April, President Barack Obama weighed in on the matter, saying through a spokesman that he believed women should be admitted.

“This is a joyous occasion as we enthusiastically welcome Secretary Condoleezza Rice and Darla Moore as members of Augusta National Golf Club,” Billy Payne, the club’s chairman, said in a statement.

Payne, who has refused in the past to speak publicly about membership matters, did not directly address the gender bar issue in his statement, saying only that it was a “significant and positive time” for the club and that Rice and Moore were subjected to the same review as other candidates.

“Consideration with regard to any candidate is deliberate, held in strict confidence and always takes place over an extended period of time,” Payne said. “The process for Condoleezza and Darla was no different.”

Obama had increased the pressure on Augusta National when he said in April that the club should admit women as members.

“He welcomes this development, thinks it was too long in coming but obviously believes it’s the right thing to do,” White House spokesman Jay Carney told a news briefing on Monday.

Rice, recently appointed to the U.S. Golf Association’s nominating committee, said in a statement: “I have visited Augusta National on several occasions and look forward to playing golf, renewing friendships and forming new ones through this very special opportunity.”

Rice, 57, was national security adviser under former President George W. Bush before becoming the first black female secretary of state in his second term. In 2010, she became a faculty member of the Stanford Graduate School of Business and a director of its global center for business and the economy.

Tiger Woods, who knows Rice through Stanford and became the first black player to win the Masters, with a record-shattering victory by 12 shots, in 1997, said: “I think the decision by the Augusta National membership is important to golf.

“The club continues to demonstrate its commitment to impacting the game in positive ways. I would like to congratulate both new members, especially my friend Condi Rice.”

Moore, 58, received an MBA from George Washington University and by the early 1990s had become the highest-paid woman in banking. She is a partner of the private investment firm Rainwater, Inc., which was founded by her husband, Richard Rainwater.

“I am fortunate to have many friends who are members at Augusta National, so to be asked to join them as a member represents a very happy and important occasion in my life,” Moore said in a statement.

LONG-TIME FRIENDS

Moore is a long-time friend of William “Hootie” Johnson, Augusta National’s former chairman, and they share a South Carolina background and careers in banking.

“This is wonderful news for Augusta National Golf Club and I could not be more pleased,” Johnson said in a statement to South Carolina’s The State newspaper. “Darla Moore is my good friend, and I know she and Condoleezza Rice will enjoy the club as much as I have.”

Tim Finchem, commissioner of the U.S. PGA Tour, also applauded Monday’s announcement by Augusta National.

“At a time when women represent one of the fastest growing segments in both playing and following the game of golf, this sends a positive and inclusive message for our sport,” he said in a statement.

Augusta National’s membership policy has been an issue for years, most notably a decade ago when Martha Burk of the National Council of Women’s Organizations led a series of protests that prompted a heated war of words with Augusta’s then-chairman Johnson.

“There may well come a day when women will be invited to join our membership, but that timetable will be ours, and not at the point of a bayonet,” Johnson declared at the time.

The widespread calls for female members took on added significance after Ginni Rometty became chief executive officer of IBM Corp in January.

IBM, the world’s largest technology services company, is a long-standing sponsor of the Masters, the first of the four “major” golf tournaments of the year, and its past four CEOs were granted membership to Augusta National. Rometty, however, was not included in Monday’s announcement of new members.

Augusta’s invitation-only membership has been steeped in secrecy since the club opened in 1932. Prior to Monday’s ground-breaking announcement, women were allowed to play the course only if invited by a member.

The club does not reveal its full list of members, believed to be around 300, although it is known that some of the most powerful men from industry and finance, including Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, are members.

It was not until 1990 that Augusta National invited its first black member, businessman Ron Townsend, following accusations of racial discrimination at the whites-only Shoal Creek club in Alabama that was selected to host the PGA Championship, another of the four major tournaments.

IBM joined other sponsors in putting pressure on Shoal Creek by pulling its television advertisements.

August 4, 2012

The fastest men on the planet will line up side by side Sunday, and in theory, any one of them could win gold in one of the most anticipated 100-meter races the Olympics has ever seen.

In actuality, all eyes will gravitate toward Jamaican sensation Usain Bolt, a magnet for attention, already an international superstar. Whatever Bolt does — win or lose, primp or preen — he’ll make it hard for anyone to look away. Even those trying to swipe his Olympic crown have to fight the urge to steal a glance.

Official timing company Omega has assembled an army of technicians and ultra-precise equipment so that when the world’s fastest runners hit the finish line, we’ll know exactly how speedy they are.

“You’re gonna be in awe sometimes,” said Justin Gatlin, the year’s fastest sprinter not born in Jamaica. “I think a lot of runners almost have that audience mentality, to see what he’s going to do, even while you’re running. You’ve got to block that out.”

When it comes to the track and field world, Gatlin says Bolt is “the equivalent of a guy walking on the moon for the first time,” and Sunday at Olympic Stadium, the 25-year old Jamaican will try to add to his legend. Carl Lewis, in 1984 and ’88, is the only runner who has managed to win the prized 100-meter race in consecutive Olympics. After a false start in last year’s world championships and finishing second in his own country’s Olympic trials, a Bolt win here is certainly no sure thing.

“It definitely feels good,” Bolt said following his first-round race Saturday.

There were no surprises in the men’s 100-meter first-round heats, but the finishing times seemed to confirm one thing: Sunday’s final should be one of the fastest races ever.

In the seven first-round heats, Americans Ryan Bailey (9.88 seconds) and Gatlin (9.97) both broke the 10-second barrier and eight sprinters posted faster times than Bolt’s 10.09. American Tyson Gay, the former world champion, won his heat in 10.08 seconds. Bailey posted the day’s fastest time, as all three American sprinters advanced to Sunday’s semifinals, which will be followed two hours later by the gold-medal race.

The speedy Jamaicans also cruised through their first races. Bolt’s time was actually the slowest of the three. Yohan Blake, the defending world champion and perhaps the favorite to unseat his fellow countryman, won his heat (10 seconds), as did Asafa Powell (10.04).

But all eyes at Olympic Stadium on Saturday were focused on the world record holder who received an ovation that topped that of any British athlete. When the starter’s pistol fired, Bolt showed no signs of the hamstring injury that prompted him to withdraw from a Diamond League race last month.

“He looked good,” said Gatlin, who won gold at the 2004 Games. “He looked like Bolt. . . .He was doing the same thing he’s been doing.”

Bolt was a bit slow out of the blocks — of the 54 first-round finishers, his reaction time was faster than just five others — but was still able to cruise for the final 20 meters or so.

“I can’t complain. I’ve been doing a lot of work on that,” Bolt said of his start. “But we have come to the conclusion we shouldn’t worry about the start. We should just focus on the rest of the race, which we always do. So I am working the last 50 meters. That is my strong point. That is what I am focusing on.”

Worth remembering: In Beijing four years ago, Bolt ran a 10.2 in his first race, which he then lowered to 9.92 and 9.85 in subsequent rounds, winning all three heats. He won gold with a record-setting time of 9.69 seconds. (Bolt’s 9.58 finish in 2009 is the current record.)

“It’s gonna take a dominating race,” Gatlin said of Sunday’s final. “You have to dominate from the beginning.”

Bailey, 23, placed third at the U.S. trials in Eugene, Ore., with a 9.93. His impressive time Saturday matched his personal best.

While most runners conserve their energy in the first-round races — Gay said Saturday, “I did about 75 percent” — Bailey’s time was so good that it would’ve earned a medal at any Olympics before 2004. It would’ve been good enough for gold at any Games before 1996.

“There’s no pressure on me whatsoever,” he said. “If I go out there and fail, nobody was expecting me to medal anyways. I figure if I go out there and medal, steal a medal from somebody, it’s good for me.”

A new trailer for the latest James Bond film Skyfall has given fans their first glimpse of Oscar-winning actor Javier Bardem’s blond villain in action.

Bardem’s character, named Silva, is seen confronting a manacled Bond, played by Daniel Craig, and is later shown disguised as a British policeman.

The trailer features actor Ben Whishaw as “The New Q” and explosive action in various London locales.

It also shows Bond being “killed” in action and M typing up his obituary.

Played by Dame Judi Dench, 007’s boss is then seen being chastised by Ralph Fiennes’ character Gareth Mallory for losing a disc drive containing details of undercover British agents.

Subsequent scenes depict an explosion at MI6’s Thameside HQ and a Tube train plummeting into an underground vault.

The trailer reveals previously unknown plot points, one of which appears to have been drawn from Ian Fleming’s novel You Only Live Twice.

The 1964 book concludes with an obituary for Bond written by M after the secret agent is believed to have been killed during a mission in Japan.

The latest trailer comes shortly after Craig’s cameo appearance during the Olympic Opening Ceremony in a short film that showed Bond escorting the Queen to the Olympic Stadium.

Audiences in the US were treated to a teaser of the new footage during NBC’s telecast of the London 2012 launch.

Daniel Craig in Skyfall
Daniel Craig’s James Bond features in another newly released Skyfall image

Other scenes unveiled on Tuesday include one showing British actress Naomie Harris, in her role as field agent Eve, “shooting” Bond off the roof of a moving train in Turkey.

Skyfall, to be released in the UK on 26 October, marks Craig’s third big-screen appearance as Fleming’s legendary spy.

The 44-year-old was previously seen in the role in 2006’s Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace in 2008.

Spanish actor Bardem won the best supporting actor Oscar in 2008 for his villainous role in No Country for Old Men.

The 43-year-old, who is married to fellow Spaniard Penelope Cruz, was also Oscar-nominated in 2001 and 2011.

Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania reacts as she receives her gold medal

30 July 2012                     19:45 GMT

Teenager Ruta Meilutyte wins shock 100m breaststroke gold

Teenager Ruta Meilutyte won Lithuania’s first ever Olympic gold in the swimming pool by beating American Rebecca Soni in the women’s 100m breaststroke.

The 15-year-old, who trains and goes to school in Plymouth, led from the start in the final, holding on to beat the fast-finishing Soni by 0.08 seconds.

Japan’s Satomi Suzuki earned bronze, while Australia’s defending champion Leisel Jones finished fifth.

“I can’t believe it,” Meilutyte told BBC Sport. “It’s too much for me.”

from:  http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/olympics/18906960

———————————————————————————————

There will, after all, be an Olympic gold medal to be celebrated by the staff and pupils of Plymouth College. Just hours after Tom Daley, the school’s most famous graduate, failed to claim a medal, Ruta Meilutyte produced the third of three astonishing swims spread over the course of two days to claim gold for Lithuania at the age of 15.

On an unrewarding night for Britain – Liam Tancock, the sole medal hope, faded to finish fifth in the 100m backstroke – the home support were able to claim a victory of sorts in the 100m breaststroke through Meilutyte. She has already been asked about switching allegiance and firmly declined.

Like Daley before her, Meilutyte is on a scholarship at the private school and trains at the same facility in Plymouth, but unlike the poster boy of Team GB she did not arrive in London with any great expectation resting on her young shoulders. Her coach, Jon Rudd, said they would have settled for a personal best and a place in the final. He got both.

It is the second astonishing teenage victory to come in the first three nights in the pool, but in many ways hers is even more remarkable a performance than that of Ye Shiwen, the 16-year-old Chinese who shattered the world record in the 400m individual medley and set a new Olympic mark in the 200m individual medley last night.

Meilutyte, the only female in the Lithuanian swim team, is ranked No 1 in the world in her age group but coming into the Olympics had managed to record only the 14th best time in the world this year. She has now recorded the fastest.

Whereas the raucous atmosphere inside the Aquatics Centre seems to have overawed some of the British swimmers, Meilutyte has thrived. From the moment she touched the water in her heat on Sunday morning she has dominated the event.

She began with a personal best and then in that night’s semi-finals she broke the European record to advance to the final as quickest qualifier.

The rest of the swimming world was all too aware of her by the time she stepped out of the call room last night, clad in her dark green swim hat with the Lithuanian flag on one side. She appeared nerveless; she was unaffected by a false start from Breeja Larson, the American two lanes down, and also unbothered by the few minutes’ wait that followed as the starting mechanism was reset.

Coming down the final 50m she opened up her lead and then held on as Rebecca Soni responded over the closing 15m. She touched 0.08sec quicker than the Beijing gold medallist, hauled herself out of the water and perched on the lane divider waving ecstatically to the crowd.

Meilutyte, whose mother died in a car accident when she was four, arrived in Britain two years ago. Her father had come to Plymouth to work as a carer, seen the facilities at the Leander club in the city and suggested she join him. “It will be good for your swimming,” he informed her.

Her progress under Rudd, who has a stable of impressive young swimmers, has been meteoric. She was understandably taken aback. “It’s too much for me,” she said. “I really can’t say anything. It was hard and difficult. At the moment I can’t speak too much. But it means a lot to me and I’m so proud.” Tears followed on the podium.

The best two British swims of the night came from women too. Caitlin McClatchey and Hannah Miley making finals in the 200m freestyle and the 200m individual medley relay respectively. McClatchey, at her third Olympics, produced her best swim since Beijing, setting the pace in a high-class field for the second semi-final. She led at the final turn, only for Federica Pellegrini to edge past but McClatchey held on to second to finish ahead of Missy Franklin.

The two men in action, Tancock and Robbie Renwick, were both in finals but neither troubled the podium. Renwick will be the more satisfied with his sixth place in the 200m freestyle final amid some stellar performers. It marked an improvement of two places on Beijing.

For Tancock, McClatchey’s partner, it was one better than in 2008 but represents another frustrating failure to transform his dominance over 50m into the 100m. He swum his first world championships in 2005 and it is at world level where his success has come. The 50m backstroke, at which he excels as the world record holder, is not an Olympic event.

Gemma Spofforth completed the last individual race of her career with a creditable fifth in the 100m backstroke behind Missy Franklin. Spofforth will retire after the Games and plans to attempt to climb Everest. She will probably discover Meilutyte waiting for her.

A teenager with an irregular crop of hair and an uncertain smile, China’s Ye Shiwen showed no sign of awkwardness in the pool as she powered to gold in the 400 metres individual medley on Sunday.

Both Ye and her compatriot Li Xuanxu, who won the bronze medal, showed off the new wave of Chinese women that will be a force to be reckoned with at the London Games.

Ye trailed American world champion Elizabeth Beisel after the penultimate breaststroke leg before unleashing a devastating sprint finish over the final two freestyle laps.

She covered the penultimate lap in 29.75 seconds, faster than Michael Phelps did in the men’s medley final, then the last in 28.93, which was quicker than Ryan Lochte did in winning the men’s event.

Ye also became the first female swimmer to break a world record since the ban of hi-tech suits, taking more than a second off the previous record, set by Australia’s Stephanie Rice in Beijing four years ago, and all that despite a bad night’s sleep and some pre-race nerves.

“I am so excited, it is out of a dream,” she said. “My coach said he didn’t imagine I would have this result.”

Ye brushed off criticism from some quarters that China trains its competitors “like robots”.

“Of course not,” she said, in brief comments to reporters as she professed herself “too excited to think”.

“I think we have very good training, very scientific based training, that’s why we all have progressed.”

Echoing her performance at the world championships last year when she won the 200m medley, Ye’s powerful final laps in Saturday’s gruelling eight-lap race showed off the impact of the large hands that got her noticed by her kindergarten teacher, as she shattered Beisel’s hopes for gold.

Beisel, who set the fastest time in the heats, took silver, but the 19-year-old said she was delighted just to be on the podium after missing out altogether in Beijing when she was just 15.

“I have probably been dreaming of this moment since I started swimming,” she said of her medal, congratulating rival Ye on “the race of her life”.

Ye, who turned 16 in March, comes from an ordinary working-class background in the affluent eastern tourism hub of Hangzhou, best known for its famous lake.

Matthew McQuinn, 27, threw himself in front of his longtime girlfriend, Samantha Yowler, saving her but not himself. Yowler was listed in stable condition Saturday after surgery. The pair had met at a Target store where they worked in Springfield, Ohio, and had applied for transfers to a store in Aurora, according to the Dayton Daily News.

“They’re really fun people; we always go out together,” Melissa Downen, a Colorado coworker and friend to the couple, told the Daily News.

Death: AJ Boik was reported to be another victim of the murderous rampage inflicted on a Colorado cinema

Alexander “A.J.” Boik, a recent high school graduate who planned to attend Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design in nearby Lakewood, was celebrated at an impromptu gathering Saturday evening at his alma mater, Gateway High School in Aurora.

Many recalled Boik, 18, as a warm, loving young man who played the violin, loved making pottery and dreamed of teaching art. As Boik’s closest friends and relatives stood shoulder to shoulder, mourners circulated a poem written by a fellow student, Barbara Barocio: “You’re one of the reasons why/Almost all of our days remain bright/Thank you, you are one of our most/Special friends.”

He liked to sketch romantic scenes of couples kissing and walking under clouds that formed the words “I love you.”

His friend Tre Freeman said Boik was a “carefree spirit” who had once grown a handlebar mustache; “I don’t know any other teenager who would do that,” Freeman said.

A private helicopter that crashed into an Arizona river has killed all four of its passengers on board, sheriff’s officials said Sunday.

The wreckage was discovered early Sunday morning in a remote area approximately 24 hours after the aircraft was reported traveling from Sedona to Scottsdale, the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office said.

Search crews with the Civil Air Patrol started looking for the Aerospatiale AS350 helicopter on Saturday when it was reported overdue, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said.

Wreckage: A private helicopter that crashed into an Arizona river has killed all four people on board

The wreckage was spotted around 8.45am Sunday by a private pilot south of Camp Verde, Gregor said.

Police reported 70-year-old Raymond Perry of Phoenix piloting the plane when it went down in the river in parts just waist to shoulder-width deep.

Perry, who served as CEO of the area’s Arriba Mexican Grill restaurants, was the owner of the helicopter based in Scottsdale, the sheriff’s office said.

With him were 68-year-old Karen Stinn of Cave Creek and married couple Mike Dunaway, 63 and Linda Dunaway, 63, of Glendale.

Mr Dunaway was a retired Fire Chief in Durango and his wife a former executive director of the La Plata County Humane Society.

A Facebook profile for Ms Stinn reported her working as an Arizona realtor.

Friends and family told ABC15 that Mr Perry was flying his friends to Sedona for breakfast the morning of the crash.

‘This wasn’t unusual. He did this all the time so I didn’t think anything of it,’ one of Mr Perry’s friends Al Cooper told the station.

Other passengers: The other two victims reported in the crash were retired fire chief Mike Dunaway and his wife Linda, both aged 63

Their bodies have been removed from the wreckage and taken into custody by the medical examiner’s office.

National Transportation Safety Board investigators were looking at the wreckage Sunday afternoon to determine what caused the crash.

Camp Verde is about 86 miles north of Phoenix.

June 13, 2012                 10:39 p.m.

Matt Cain pitched the 22nd perfect game in major league history and first for the Giants, striking out a career-high 14 and getting help from two spectacular catches to beat the Houston Astros 10-0 on Wednesday night.
Cain’s 125-pitch masterpiece for San Francisco featured a pair of great plays by his corner outfielders. He got pinch-hitter Jason Castro on a grounder to third for his 27th and final out with the sellout crowd of 42,298 roaring.

It was the fifth no-hitter in the majors already this year and second perfect game. At a ballpark where Barry Bonds made home run history, Cain produced the signature moment for pitchers.

Left fielder Melky Cabrera chased down Chris Snyder’s one-out flyball in the sixth, scurrying back to make a leaping catch at the wall. Cain raised both arms and slapped his glove in delight when Cabrera made the play.

Then, right fielder Gregor Blanco ran into deep right-center to make a diving catch on the warning track and rob Jordan Schafer for the first out of the seventh. The 27-year-old pitcher hugged Blanco in the dugout after the inning.

“Those were unbelievable catches,” Cain said. “I mean that right there, that changes the whole thing.”

Phillip Humber of the Chicago White Sox tossed the majors’ last perfecto at Seattle on April 21. This is the second time in three years there have been two perfect games in the same season — before that, the only other time it happened was in 1880.

Cain (8-2) accomplished a feat even Hall of Famers Gaylord Perry and Juan Marichal couldn’t with this storied franchise.

Not since 1917 have there been five no-hitters in a season by mid-June. The only year that came close was 1990, when Fernando Valenzuela and Dave Stewart each pitched no-hitters on June 29 — the fourth and fifth of the season.

This year, Johan Santana tossed the New York Mets’ first no-hitter on June 1 and six Seattle pitchers shut down the Los Angeles Dodgers last Friday. Jered Weaver had one for the Los Angeles Angels on May 2.

The Astros were no-hit for the fifth time and first since Carlos Zambrano did so for the Cubs on Sept. 14, 2008.

The Giants made a big commitment to Cain this spring, locking him up for a long haul — and he showed exactly why general manager Brian Sabean has vowed to keep his talented pitchers. In a week when the city’s attention turned to golf and the U.S. Open, Cain delivered his most impressive gem yet in his 216th career start.

The 125 pitches were the most ever thrown in a perfect game.

The two-time All-Star who had long been the Giants starter who endured a lack of run support already was rewarded with a new $127.5 million, six-year contract in early April before the season started. This certainly meant as much or more to the homegrown pitcher.

Cain threw 86 of his pitches for strikes, faced just four full counts and still clocked 90 mph in the ninth. Cain followed up Madison Bumgarner’s 12-strikeout gem in Tuesday night’s 6-3 win.

It was the first no-hitter since departed left-hander Jonathan Sanchez pitched the Giants’ last one on July 10, 2009, against the Padres at AT&T Park.

The Astros were no-hit by the Giants for the second time. Marichal did it on June 15, 1963.

Ted Barrett became the first umpire to work behind the plate for two perfect games. He also worked David Cone’s 1999 perfecto.

Catcher Buster Posey rushed the mound as Cain raised his arm. His teammates jumped the dugout rail as the final out was made, a moment reminiscent of that improbable World Series championship in 2010 at Texas.

“I can’t thank Buster enough,” Cain said. “I didn’t even question once what he was calling.”

Cain’s wife, Chelsea, fought tears when shown in the stands as the celebration began, then made her way to the dugout for a congratulatory hug and kiss.

Cain had come close already this season — not once, but twice. In his second start of the year, in the team’s home opener April 13, he one-hit the Pirates in a 5-0 win, then allowed only two hits over nine innings in the Giants’ 11-inning, 1-0 win over Cliff Lee and the Phillies.

The Giants produced their first back-to-back 10-strikeout performances by one pitcher since 1978. On May 17, 1978, Vida Blue fanned 11 against the Cubs, then after an off day, John Montefusco struck out 10 at Los Angeles.

Cabrera, Brandon Belt and Blanco all hit two-run homers and the Giants produced an offensive outburst rarely seen at home this season and rarely seen on nights Cain has pitched.

On this night, he threw nine of his initial 11 pitches for strikes, commanding his repertoire with a dazzling fastball.

Cain, who hit one drive into McCovey Cove alongside U.S. Open golfer Dustin Johnson before the game to show off one of his other favorite pastimes, sat by himself in the dugout between innings.

A janitor is charged with attempted murder and other offences after a gas leak at a downtown Toronto all-girls Catholic high school.

Police say students and staff were forced to evacuate St. Joseph’s College School, on Wellesley Street West, on Thursday morning due to the strong smell of gas.

It’s alleged the head custodian cut a gas pipe in the building, then went into the school’s kitchen and helped staff light the stove.

No injuries were reported.

Vincent Perna, 67, faces a number of charges, including breaking and entering, mischief endangering life and attempted arson with disregard for human life.

Students of the secondary school took to social media to express their disbelief, many describing the accused custodian as a nice man.

One 15-year-old student tweeted a request that her fellow students handle the situation with maturity. Others urged a presumption of innocence.

The school, which has a teacher-run Twitter account for its annual “J-Walk” walkathon, advised the students not to talk to the media Friday night.

“Ladies, there are lots of reporters looking to talk to you. I recommend you give a polite ‘no thank you,’ ” read one tweet from the account.

Richard Merrick is an award-winning pioneer in the high-tech industry, developing sound- and language-recognition systems, graphics and animation engines, and AI game engines designed to mirror and mimic human behavior. He retired in 2006 to further develop his theory of music perception, called harmonic interference theory. In addition to writing several books on topics related to harmonic science, he has written for Nexus and Caduceus magazines and has spoken as a guest lecturer at Rosslyn chapel in Scotland. In this program Richard talks about his new book “The Venus Blueprint: Uncovering the Ancient Science of Sacred Spaces”. The book presents evidence that the orbital resonance pattern of Venus was used as a “temple template” to design psychoacoustical chambers capable of focusing and controlling entheogenic communion. The book has been released just in time for the Venus Transit of June 5-6th, 2012. This special event will not occur again until another 105 years.

Sonia Barrett is globally recognized for her unique, in-depth and humorous style of explaining the nature of reality as not only a virtual reality but ultimately a game. In 1992, a newly divorced single mother of two sons, Sonia Barrett set out to prove her own influence on physical reality amidst the difficulties and struggles. She was determined to triumph in consciously Fusing Mind and Matter. Against all odds, she proclaimed a movement upon herself without books or gurus to guide her, with only determination as her resource. Sonia Barrett would eventually “penetrate the matrix,” as had been her desire and ultimate goal. She became her own experiment and the results later became the books The Holographic Canvas: The Fusing of Mind and Matter published in 2008 and The Cosmic Game in 3D: Mastering Reality, Mastering the Matrix of the Mind, due for release in December 2010. With the publishing of The Holographic Canvas Sonia found herself at the other end of her many years of silent learning.

Sonia Barrett is the host/producer and founder of Sovereign Mind Radio (www.sovereignmindradio.com) and the founder and publisher of Sovereign Mind Magazine (www.sovereignmindmagazine.com). She has written many articles exploring the idea of time travel as a natural component in the experiencing of reality. Sonia Barrett explores the possibility of immortality or physical existence beyond the common view of time, the potential for a natural ascension in consciousness and the computized (reality being much like a computer generated program) design of reality (www.spiritinform.com). She has been interviewed on radio programs and presents workshops and lectures internationally. The concept behind these workshops and lectures is to reawaken the memory of those attending—as noted on the back of her book, “The answers are all tied into the forgotten past and like the single cell of a plant our history is encoded in our cells, DNA and the air we breathe.” She aims to remind others that they need only desire to know, to remember what is already within, using the momentum of determination to pierce the veil which overshadows the endless unknown.

Russian President Vladimir Putin named a new Cabinet Monday, warning its members that they will have to fulfill their duties in a difficult global economic climate.

Several key ministers, including foreign, defense and finance, have kept their seats, but some of the most unpopular ones were replaced. Their dismissal, however wouldn’t necessarily mean that they have been completely purged from officialdom. Russian media are speculating that some could get other senior jobs.

Putin, who won a third term in March’s election, said the new Cabinet led by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev should continue the course set in previous years.

“The situation in the global economy is unclear; there are quite a lot of factors that make it opaque,” Putin said in televised remarks to the new Cabinet. “You will have to fulfill a program of Russia’s development in these conditions.”

Medvedev stepped down as president to allow Putin to reclaim the top job. Putin served as the premier for four years after having to relinquish his presidency after two terms due to a constitutional limit of two consecutive terms.

Many key members of the old Cabinet have retained their seats, including Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov and Finance Minister Anton Siluanov. First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov has clung to his seat despite a controversy over his investments and wealth.

Vladislav Surkov, the architect of Putin’s domestic policies who was transferred to the Cabinet last fall, also has retained the position of a deputy prime minister.

Igor Sechin, Putin’s longtime aide who oversaw the oil and gas sector as a deputy prime minister, has lost his seat but is widely expected to retain his influence and continue overseeing top energy projects from behind the scenes.

Some of the most unpopular ministers, including those who were in charge of health, education, and interior affairs, have left the Cabinet. Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev, who has faced massive public criticism over widespread incidents of torture and other abuses by police, has been replaced by Moscow police chief Vladimir Kolokoltsev.

Tatyana Golikova, who has been seen as a culprit for the worsening state of the nation’s healthcare system amid a reform widely seen as badly planned and ill-guided, has been replaced by her deputy, Veronika Skvortsova. The highly unpopular former Education Minister Anatoly Fursenko was succeeded by Dmitry Livanov, the rector of the Moscow Steel University.

Putin, who has a record of keeping his lieutenants on government service despite public criticism, is widely expected to give the former ministers perky positions in his administration.

“New faces, old policy,” opposition lawmaker Ilya Ponomarev tweeted acerbically after the new Cabinet was announced.

Amid the new faces in the Cabinet were Energy Minister Alexander Novak and Deputy Prime Minister Olga Golodets, who in the past were linked to tycoon Mikhail Prokhorov, the billionaire owner of the New Jersey Nets basketball team. Prokhorov came in third in Russia’s presidential elections, winning liberal votes on the wave of massive protests against Putin’s rule, but then left the political scene, apparently reluctant to challenge Putin.

Novak has recently served as a deputy finance minister, while Golodets has held a job of deputy mayor of Moscow.

The new minister of culture, Vladimir Medinsky, who has succeeded soft-spoken former diplomat Alexander Avdeyev, is a member of the main Kremlin party, who has become known for his books praising Russia’s achievements.

Some of Medvedev’s key allies also have taken seats in the new Cabinet. His economic advisor, Arkady Dvorkovich, has been named a deputy prime minister and Justice Minister Alexander Konovalov has kept his seat. Mikhail Abyzov, who oversaw Medvedev’s efforts to broaden his support base, has been named the minister in charge of relations with the so-called “Open Government,” an effort by Medvedev to offer the public more input in discussions of state affairs.

Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, the only person convicted over the 1988 Lockerbie bombing above Scotland which killed 270 people, has died at home in Libya, his brother has told news agencies.

Megrahi, 59, was convicted by a special court in the Netherlands in 2001.

He was released from prison in Scotland in 2009 on compassionate grounds. He was suffering from cancer and was said to have only months to live.

When he returned to the Libyan capital, he received a hero’s welcome.

Shortly before being freed, Megrahi dropped his second appeal against his conviction.

His release sparked the fury of many of the relatives of the victims of the Lockerbie disaster.

Died at home

His brother Abdulhakim said on Sunday that Megrahi’s health had deteriorated quickly and he died at home in Tripoli.

He told the AFP news agency that Megrahi died at 13:00 local time (11:00 GMT).

Last month, Megrahi’s son said his father had been taken to hospital for blood transfusions.

Megrahi, a Libyan intelligence officer, always denied any responsibility for the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 in December 1988.

It remains the deadliest terrorist incident ever to have taken place on British soil.

Investigators tracing the origins of scraps of clothes wrapped around the bomb followed a trail to a shop in Malta which led them, eventually, to Megrahi.

Last August after the fall of Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi, Megrahi was reported to be “in and out of a coma” at his home in Tripoli.

There have been calls for him to be returned to jail in the UK or tried in the US.

But shortly after they toppled Colonel Gaddafi, Libyan rebel leaders said they would not extradite Megrahi or any other Libyan.

20 April 2012

It is a pleasure to be here today at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and I would like to thank Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg for his kind invitation. In recent years a common theme in U.S. foreign policy discussions was whether to disengage from Europe and focus on the Pacific. Today it seems that people in Washington are more interested than ever in European affairs. Unfortunately, it is for entirely the wrong reasons. How nice it would be to go back to those days of being irrelevant!

I would like to set the stage for our discussion today by addressing some of the key issues about the crisis and the European response to it. These issues get to the heart of the major debates in the U.S. and Europe at the moment. They are complex and they require us to think long-term and avoid simplifications. Ultimately, they are about what kind of Europe we want for the future.

In particular, I will focus my intervention on three questions:

Is the worst of the crisis over?

Is the European response to the crisis killing growth?

Is the ECB’s response to the crisis swamping the world with liquidity?

Is the worst of the crisis over?

Policy-makers are often asked if the worst of the crisis is over. It is a difficult question to answer. If we are optimistic we are accused of cheerleading. If we are pessimistic we risk panicking the markets and setting off self-fulfilling cycles. So we have to go by what the data are telling us. And the data show a clear stabilisation in the global economy since last year.

The U.S. is showing signs of a sustained recovery. Data releases have consistently surprised on the upside throughout the first quarter of this year, although April was more mixed. Survey data point to a moderate expansion in economic activity in early 2012. Unemployment is now at the lowest level since January 2009.

In the euro area, survey data confirm a stabilisation in economic activity at a low level in early 2012. We continue to expect the euro area economy to recover gradually in the course of the year. The outlook is supported by strong export growth to the U.S. and emerging markets. Downside risks remain, however, related to a possible worsening of the sovereign debt crisis.

Financial markets are also now generally less volatile – although we must closely monitor the situation in the Spanish government bond market. Certainly the doomsday predictions from the fourth quarter of last year seem to have been avoided.

We should not forget that, only five months ago, der Spiegel, the leading German weekly magazine ran an article entitled “A continent stares into the abyss”, which declared that the end-game for the euro had begun. The front cover of The Economist magazine in the same week asked “Is this really the end?”, set against an image of a burning 1 euro coin hurtling towards oblivion. What changed in this time? In my view, the explanation is actions taken at three levels.

First, Member States recognised the seriousness of the situation and implemented major reforms. Spain has begun addressing its competitiveness problem with the most significant labour market reform in a generation. It is also improving central control over regional spending. Italy is increasing competition and modernising its public administration to increase its potential growth. The debt exchange in Greece was successful, which gives the country a fresh start to address its fiscal and competitiveness issues. Ireland and Portugal have continued to implement their EU-IMF programmes, which are both on track.

Second, Europe has strengthened its economic governance. Fiscal rules have been reinforced through the agreement on the fiscal compact, which obliges all euro area countries to run a structural balanced budget. It also shifts the onus for enforcement away from Brussels and onto national institutions, encouraging greater ownership.

Monitoring of economic policies will go deeper through the new “enhanced surveillance” legislation. It allows the Commission to send missions to countries experiencing or threatened with financial difficulties and recommend policy changes. This gives the Commission the power to demand some reforms that the U.S. federal government could not demand of a U.S. state.

Euro area firewalls have been strengthened by the decision to increase the total resources to around I trillion US dollars. Altogether, this presents a convincing package for markets: a tough new set of rules, a strong regime for monitoring those rules, and a credible safety net to back it up.

Third, the ECB has played its part by preventing a funding crisis in the banking sector. The two 3-year LTROs launched in December and February have eased bank funding pressures and stopped further deleveraging. This should over time support lending to firms and households across the euro area.

These actions have pulled the euro area back from the very dangerous situation we faced last year. But the crisis of public and private debt in some countries is clearly not over. The recent rise in Spanish yields is evidence of this. This is no longer a problem that can be addressed through bigger firewalls or a more active ECB. It can only be addressed through consistent and determined reform, even if it is painful in the short term.

In the Spanish case the shift in market sentiment is a result of poor communication on deficit targets and delays in announcing the budget. In other words, Spain currently has a credibility problem with the markets. But this can be fixed by taking measures to regain credibility.

Overall, we should not wait for a ‘silver bullet’ to end the crisis. It does not exist. The end of the crisis will come only after a series of comprehensive steps taken over a number of years. This means all Member States and EU institutions playing their part.

Let me stress that we are greatly helped in this task by excellent transatlantic cooperation, not least between the ECB and the Federal Reserve. Among other things, the provision of dollar swaps lines has been a key weapon in fighting the crisis since 2007. So the U.S. is also playing an important role in supporting the European recovery.

Is the European response to the crisis killing growth?

This leads into my second question: is the response I just described – fiscal consolidation and structural reforms – killing growth in Europe? It is important to understand that we see things differently in Europe and the U.S. In our view, strong public finances are a pre-condition for sustainable growth. We see fiscal consolidation as supporting growth, because it creates confidence effects that will support consumption and investment in the future.

Certainly, the short term effects of consolidation can be negative. We recognise this. That is why we always recommend that consolidation is accompanied by productivity-enhancing structural reforms. This means inter alia opening up closed professions, increasing the efficiency of public administration and improving judicial systems. These are reforms that will ultimately benefit the majority of people, by increasing the growth-potential of these economies.

Take the example of Spain. The labour market reforms I mentioned are essential to increase employment. The Spanish labour market has for too long been organised in a way that protects insiders. This is what lies behind the very high rate of youth unemployment.

It may be the case that these reforms will not return some of the current problem countries to pre-crisis growth rates. So there will inevitably be calls for more stimulus. But we should keep in mind that the last ten years were not representative: it was a boom period, built on credit, creating ever larger imbalances.

That party is now over. We need to learn the lessons from it. And the lesson from the bursting of a debt bubble cannot be to load up on more debt. These countries need reforms that undo previous excesses and re-build their economies on a more sustainable basis. This is the direction in which Europe is currently heading. And there is really no alternative.

There is one area, however, where I fear we are not learning the right lessons in Europe. Several European countries face a vicious circle where weak domestic banks cause fiscal difficulties for governments, which in turn undermines public debt sustainability and further damages banks’ balance sheets.

In the U.S., such a feedback loop does not exist, because federal institutions act as shock absorbers. They prevent local crises from becoming systemic: for example, banks can be recapitalised through the U.S. Treasury and resolved through the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. In Europe we need to look to the U.S. for inspiration in this area. This is why I have called for a European bank resolution authority.

Is the ECB’s response to the crisis swamping the world with liquidity?

Let me turn now in more detail to the recent actions by the ECB – in particular, the question whether the 3-year Long Term Refinancing Operations (LTROs) have swamped the world with liquidity. Behind this question is the implication that increasing central bank liquidity always leads to distortions, be it inflation or currency volatility. But this misunderstands what central bank liquidity is.

ECB liquidity is a very specific form of money. It can be used only to make payments between banks with accounts at the ECB and to meet reserve requirements. There is no automatic mechanism which converts this liquidity into loans or asset purchases. Banks take such decisions based on factors like their financial strength, their risk aversion and the demand for credit by non-financial corporations and private households.

So we should not make simplistic assertions about one factor leading to another. We should ask: what are we seeing in the data? Looking at credit growth in the euro area, we see few signs of distortions. The LTROs have certainly prevented an abrupt deleveraging. But loans to the euro area private sector increased by only 1.1% in February, compared with an average of around 7% since the start of the euro.

Looking at capital flows to other parts of the world, we see a broadly balanced picture. The euro has in fact appreciated in effective terms since we conducted the first LTRO in December 2011. There have been significant capital inflows due to renewed interest and confidence by foreign investors.

The strongest effect of the LTROs has been on bank funding. Euro area banks issued EUR 55 billion in senior unsecured bank debt in the first two months of this year, more than the whole amount in the second half of last year. This is exactly what the LTROs were intended to achieve: to prevent a bank funding crisis. Over time we expect this to feed into higher credit for firms and households.

When this happens, we will be constantly alert to any threats of inflation. Our commitment to price stability is steadfast and credible. And observers recognise this. Following the two 3 year LTROs market indicators of inflation expectations – that is, investors risking their own money – show no signs of inflation above our medium-term objective.

So to conclude, the euro area still has a lot of work to do to put itself back on a sustainable footing. This work is difficult because it goes to the root of our economic problems. But it is also essential. Solutions that would paper over these problems by creating more debt are not in Europe’s long-term interest. They would solve this crisis by creating the conditions for the next one.

But we also need to be patient. The euro area is made up of 17 different democracies. And as you know very well in Washington, democracy is sometimes messy. Events may not play out as an economist would determine in his or her model. We may not take the most direct route to our destination. But important thing is that, in the end, we get there. I am confident that in Europe we are heading slowly but surely down the right track.

Donna Summer

May 17, 2012        9:59 a.m.

Disco queen Donna Summer, whose pulsing anthems such as “Last Dance,” “Love to Love You Baby” and “Bad Girls” became the soundtrack for a glittery age of sex, drugs, dance and flashy clothes, has died. She was 63.Her family released a statement, saying Summer died Thursday morning and that they “are at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continued legacy.””Words truly can’t express how much we appreciate your prayers and love for our family at this sensitive time,” the statement read.Summer had been living in Englewood, Fla., with her husband Bruce Sudano.

Summer came to prominence just as disco was burgeoning, and came to define the era with a string of No. 1 hits and her beauty queen looks.

But unlike some other stars of disco who faded as the music became less popular, she was able to grow beyond it and later segued to a pop-rock sound. She had one of her biggest hits in the 1980s with “She Works Hard For The Money,” which became another anthem, this time for women’s rights.

Soon after, Summer became a born-again Christian and faced controversy when she was accused of making anti-gay comments in relation to the AIDS epidemic. Summer denied making the comments, but was the target of a boycott.

Still, even as disco went out of fashion she remained a fixture in dance clubs, endlessly sampled and remixed into contemporary dance hits.

Born LaDonna Adrian Gaines, Summer was raised in Boston on gospel music.

“Love to Love You Baby” was her U.S. chart debut and the first of 19 No. 1 dance hits between 1975 and 2008 – second only to Madonna.

During the disco era she burned up the charts: She was the only artist to have three consecutive double-LPs hit No. 1, “Live and More,” “Bad Girls” and “On the Radio.” She was also the first female artist with four No. 1 singles in a 13-month period, according to the Rock Hall of Fame, where she was a nominee this year.

Her genre-defying sound helped her earn Grammy Awards in the dance, rock, R&B and inspirational categories.

She released a number of albums that have reach gold or platinum status, including the multiplatinum “Bad Girls” and “On the Radio, Volume I & II.”

She had a number of top 10 Billboard hits, including “Hot Stuff,” “She Works Hard for the Money” and “MacArthur Park.”

She released her last album, “Crayons,” in 2008. It was her first full studio album in 17 years. She also performed on “American Idol” that year with its top female contestants.

Calm before the storm: The Port St John neighbourhood where the family livedScene: Sheriff's deputies in Brevard County investigating after 33-year-old Tanya Thomas shot her four children and then herself
11:49 EST           15 May 2012

A mother-of-four killed her children and then herself early on Tuesday morning.

Sheriff’s deputies in Brevard County, Florida said 33-year-old Tanya Thomas on Tuesday shot her four children, who ranged in age from 12 to 17.

They were Joel, 12, Jazlin, 13, Jaxs, 15, and Pebbles Johnson, 17, deputies said, all of whom lived at the Port St John property with their mother.

Their father, who has been told of their deaths, lives separately, but also in Brevard County, according to the New York Post.

A neighbour told deputies they were woken up by the gunshots and heard a knock at the door. Three of the victims, who appeared to have been shot, were standing there asking for help.

They said Thomas came out of her house and calmly called over to the kids to return home.

‘She was very calm,’ sheriff’s spokesman Tom Goodyear said of the neighbor’s report. ‘She called them back and they walked back to the house.’

On arrival deputies found a Pebbles’, critically injured, lying in the front yard of 7245 Bright Avenue. She was taken by police car to an ambulance as a SWAT team surrounded the home.

Thomas was seen at the front door holding a gun but went back inside when she saw the officers in her front yard.

A short time later more gunfire was heard, prompting the SWAT team to go in through a back entrance.

Once inside they found the four other bodies.

Deputies had been at the home a few weeks ago on a domestic call after a neighbor called 911. The Orlando Sentinel reported that Jaxs was arrested on a domestic violence charge which also involved his mother.

Neighbour Travis St. Peter, told Florida Today that the family was known in the neighborhood for being disruptive, with police often being called to the house.

‘They were just known for being hoodlums,’ he said of the children, adding that they were often seen running aroundd late at night, ‘terrorizing our dogs and setting off firecrackers.’

A friend of Thomas told the Sentinel that they had woken to a text message sent by the woman during the night to say that she wished to be cremated along with her children. He did not see that message until he woke up this morning, hours after the killings.

Police would not speculate on a motive, or whether Thomas had planned the mass murder.

Port St. John is about 15 miles west of Cape Canaveral. The area is known as the ‘Space Coast’ because it is the home of NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, home of numerous famed shuttle launches.

With jockey Mario Gutierrez aboard, I'll Have Another became the first horse to win the Kentucky Derby from the No. 19 post position.

May 5, 2012        11:01PM

Besides Churchill Downs and Louisville Slugger baseball bats, this old Ohio River town’s main claim to fame has been the whiskey industry. It’s the kind of place where there’s virtually a bar on every corner in the blue-collar neighborhoods. The great sportswriter Jim Murray once described Louisville as a “bourbon-soaked bar-rag of a town.”

So you’d think that when a thoroughbred named I’ll Have Another showed up in the Kentucky Derby, he’d be sort of a sentimental choice — at least a lot lower than 15-to-1. Yet those were I’ll Have Another’s odds when his jockey, a Derby rookie named Mario Gutierrez, hunched up in his saddle and waited for the starting gate to spring open in the 138th running of America’s coveted horse race.

Heck, the record 165,307 party animals who jammed into Churchill Down on a nearly 90-degree afternoon guzzled an ungodly amount of Early Times mint juleps, the official drink of the Derby. If everybody who said, “I’ll have another” to a julep vendor had bet on Gutierrez’s colt, he would have gone off as the favorite instead of a virtually ignored longshot.

As he sat chilly in the No. 19 starting stall, Gutierrez had no idea that no horse had ever won the Derby from that post position. Over the years, horses who start from that far off the rail generally have trouble finding a decent spot in the pack as the field breaks from the gate and comes down the long Churchill stretch for the first time.

But Gutierrez, a native of Mexico who until recently was doing most of his riding at little Hastings Park in Vancouver, handled the challenge with the aplomb of a veteran. When the gate sprung open, I’ll Have Another showed an early burst of speed that drew him clear of the horses to his immediate inside.

Settling into a good stalking spot five or six horses back of the freaky-fast Bodemeister, who ran the fastest first quarter of a mile in Derby history and the fifth-fastest half, I’ll Have Another had only one horse between him and the rail as the field spun out of the first turn and straightened out on the backstretch.

But all eyes were on Bodemeister, who was trying to give trainer Bob Baffert his fourth Derby victory less than two months after the white-maned trainer had suffered a heart attack in Dubai. As Bodemeister galloped along, running free and clear on the lead, you could almost hear the media folks cranking up their Baffert feel-good stories.

Bodemeister ran a brilliant mile and an eighth. Unfortunately for him, the Derby is a mile and a quarter. Less than 100 yards before the finish line, I’ll Have Another swept past Bodemeister and pulled away for a 1½-length victory in 2:01.83. The victory earned $1.4 million for owner Paul Reddam, the man who bought the colt at auction for $42,000 and urged O’Neill to give Gutierrez a shot on the colt.

Sometimes the owner knows best.

Making his first appearance aboard I’ll Have Another in the Santa Anita’s Robert B. Lewis Stakes on Feb. 12, Gutierrez guided the 43-to-1 shot to a 2½-length victory. His work impressed Redddam and Lewis enough to put him back on the Kentucky-bred son of Flower Alley in the Santa Anita Derby on April 12. This time Gutierrez and I’ll Have Another caught the favored Create Cause at the wire for a nose victory that punched their ticket to the Derby.

After the race, an emotional Gutierrez said he wasn’t rattled by the size of the crowd or the field. This is a great opportunity in my life,” he said. “I wasn’t going to come here and melt down, that’s for sure.”

Gutierrez became the 42nd jockey to win the Derby on his first try, and nobody was more impressed with Gutierrez’s work yesterday than Mike Smith, the veteran who was aboard Bodemeister. Smith said his colt wanted to run so he didn’t try to restrain him. However, the fast early fractions proved costly at the end.

“At the top of the stretch,” said Smith, “I really thought we had it. But I knew we were in trouble when I saw Doug’s horse coming.”

The only other horse who ran up to his potential was Dullahan, who had to go nine wide in the turn for home, but came flying to finish third. The favored Union Rags had his usual bad luck, breaking slow and getting bumped to the rear early. The white horse, Hansen, spit out the bit at the top of the stretch and struggled home ninth.

According to Reddam, I’ll Have Another’s name came from what he says whenever his wife bakes cookies. In a place like Louisville, though, it has another meaning entirely — especially on the day the city turns into the world’s largest outdoor cocktail party.

Assuming that he comes out of the race unscathed, the Derby winner definitely will try to capture the second leg of racing’s Triple Crown — the Preakness at Pimlico in Baltimore on May 19.

“Baltimore, here we come!” chortled O’Neill.

In other words, when it comes to Triple Crown races, he’ll have another.
