On the grandest of stages, with billions watching, their friend and co-worker, Joe Fernandez ran on to the field at the World Cup.
Those who know Joe were not surprised that he pulled this stunt.
“No, he’s really one of those guys. He’s too hyper,” said manager Jesus Villalobos.
Joe, who is waiter, didn’t just run on the field during the Mexico-Uruguay match.
He performed. Wearing a a Mexican flag as a cape. Joe paraded past the goalie, and struck a pose. But then security finally got to Joe, taking him down, and eventually arresting him.
“Seems like he was just detained for a couple hours. Everybody was very nice. He apologized to FIFA to the Mexican government and to the fans,” said his uncle, Chris Fernandez.
At the Red Mesa Cantina they are turning this whole thing into a marketing opportunity. They are thinking of making t-shirts. They already have these posters made up. And for the rest the day Thursday, if you come in and say Viva Joe, you get a free margarita.
Mexico did lose the game, but still advanced to the next round. Joe is sticking around South Africa for more of the World Cup, but plans on staying put in the stands. In the meantime, his buddies back in St. Pete look forward to fun-loving Joe coming home.
“He’s a very easy going guy. He likes to get a lot of attention and finally he did,” said his uncle.
