A manhunt for a father accused of tossing his two-year-old daughter into a creek to die has gone nationwide.
Tierra Morgan Glover was found face down in a stream, still strapped in her car seat in a New Jersey park on Tuesday.
Her father, 27-year-old Arthur Morgan III of Ocean Township, had picked her up for a court-approved visit and was supposed to be taking her to see the animated film Happy Feet Two.
Morgan has been charged with her murder and the FBI and U.S. Marshals are now among several agencies now involved in the nationwide search.
Morgan also was added this weekend as a featured fugitive on the ‘America’s Most Wanted’ television show’s website.
Authorities believe Morgan fled the state and may have headed out West.
The toddler was found by a group of teens on Tuesday, partially submerged in a creek at Shark River Park in Wall, New Jersey. The cause of death was determined by as ‘homicidal violence with submersion in water.’
A warrant charging Morgan with child endangerment was issued before the girl’s body was found.
But an abduction alert for Tierra was not issued because the state had no reason to believe the child was in danger until she was found dead.
Morgan met the child’s mother Imani Benton, 24, at a supermarket on Monday to take her out for the rest of the day, reported the Asbury Park Press.
Morgan had not visited the child in a month and planned to take her to the park before watching the film.
He was legally-obliged to return Tierra by 9pm but when he did not come back Ms Benton called police, the girl’s grandmother told the newspaper.
A 15-year-old boy was one of three teenagers who saw her hand sticking out of a river in Shark River Park on Tuesday and realised it was that of a child.
Park rangers then called police.
‘The detectives came to my door and told me she was dead in the woods. I don’t know what I’m going to do’
The creek, about 20 miles north of where she lived, is up to 7ft deep in the area where the body was found, near an overpass 15ft above the creek.
Ms Benton was told on Tuesday night her daughter was dead, just over 24 hours after she had left her with Morgan.
‘The detectives came to my door and told me she was dead in the woods,’ she told the Asbury Park Press. ‘I don’t know what I’m going to do.’
She was later hospitalised, the Star Ledger reported.
Around 100 neighbors and friends gathered outside the child’s home on Wednesday night for a candlelight vigil in memory of the little girl .
A visibly distressed Benton cried out repeatedly: ‘She was my baby girl’.
Speaking through tears Tierra’s grandmother, Michelle Simmons told mourners: ‘I appreciate all the neighbours, ‘ patch.com reported.
She added: ‘I hope that he is caught and justice is served.’
Lisa Haus, a neighbor who organised the event wrote on Facebook: ‘This is such a shame what has happened, and I would love to do something for the family, but there is nothing you could say or do in a time like this to ease the pain,’
‘So please everyone, join me in lighting a candle for this precious angel.’
Mourners paid their respects on Thanksgiving morning laying flower offerings, Starburst candy and and a toy penguin from ‘Happy Feet Two,’ the film she was supposed to see on the day she died.
The funeral is to take place today at 10am at the Cathedral International in Asbury Park, New Jersey.
