Greg Glassman is the man behind CrossFit. Picture: Screengrab.

October 25, 2013            11:19AM

HAVEN’T heard of CrossFit? You must have been living under a rock.

The fitness empire has exploded to become one of the biggest brands in the industry and gained a cult-like status among followers, renowned for its ridiculously tough workouts and take-no-prisoners attitude.

The brand is expected to rake in more than $100 million in revenue this year, with more than 10,000 CrossFit gyms, known as ‘boxes’ in the US alone.

But for all the slavish devotion, little is known about the man behind the fitness machine – a 56 year old named Greg Glassman.

Glassman is the son of a scientist and stay-at-home mum who grew up in California, partaking in all sorts of sports from weightlifting to gymnastics, according to a recent Inc profile.

He started personal training but was booted from various gyms for unorthodox techniques, eventually landing a job training police officers in Santa Cruz.

Word of his notoriously tough sessions spread, and he began posting one workout of the day online. CrossFit was born.

While CrossFit had gained a huge following, Glassman wanted to do things his own way.

“I’m not going to be told what to do” he said in an interview with Reason TV, adding they “broke free of norms both as a physiological model and as a business model and struck out on our own.”

Glassman is the sole owner of the company which has no board of directors. Anyone can start up a CrossFit ‘box’ with a two-day course to become a certified instructor and an annual affiliation payment.

The boss, known as “Coach” has turned down other sources of revenue in favour of this simplicity and the company makes money from their affiliation deals, training new instructors and registration at the CrossFit games, Inc reports.

The logo is a clown called Uncle Pukie – a regular visitor after tough sessions.

“We’re rough edged and authentic and yeah you might puke and we have a clown that pukes and we’re putting him on the side of our plane became it makes us laugh,” Mr Glassman said.

“It’s an active, running, sweating breeding community. The cult of the caveman.”

But while it sounds free and easy, Glassman also has a reputation for being fiercely protective of the brand.

There are between 12 and 20 legal firms on alert to pursue cases on behalf of the company, with a database of about 5000 potential infringements on the books, according to Inc .

They also have a take-no-prisoners social media policy which has involved swiftly cutting off a parody Twitter account that made distasteful jokes about the Boston bombing and mobilising supporters when Glassman’s ex-wife wanted to sell part of the company to a venture capitalist.

The extreme workouts and two-day training has also come under fire, something Glassman said is part of the deal with CrossFit.

“If you find the notion of falling off the rings and breaking your neck so foreign to you, then we don’t want you in our ranks,” he reportedly said.

He also doesn’t do the workouts himself – something devotees have questioned on the CrossFit message boards.

“Not saying he should be a top level competitor or anything but if you swear by something one would think that you would at least drink your own koolaid,” wrote one user.

Despite the criticisms, the juggernaut rolls on.

Peter Hoang runs a CrossFit in Sydney’s West and said their members can’t get enough.

“I just love everything. It’s fun, it’s a community, everyone knows each other … We train as a community and help each other. We don’t have mirrors, we don’t have anything like that. We just have results.”

With the help of music (and a seriously inspiring teacher) Mushy overcame his stutter.

October 26, 2013

REMEMBER that uplifting feeling you got when you saw The King’s Speech and Colin Firth finally conquered his stammer at the end?

Well Musharaf Asghar isn’t the king. And he doesn’t have the whole nation hanging on his every word.

But your heart will soar just as much when you watch him achieve the seemingly impossible.

After suffering through a stutter since boyhood – not to mention the cruel bullying that came with it – Musharaf, or Mushy, brings his classmates to tears with a triumphant speech that will make you feel really good, we promise.

Mushy struggled hopelessly with his words until his English teacher Mr Burton tried a technique he saw in the Oscar-winning movie about the stuttering monarch, George VI.

Just like Firth’s character in the movie, Mushy wears headphones that gently play music while he’s talking in front of the class to help take his mind of his debilitating speech impediment.

With Mr Burton’s help, Mushy was able to deliver a 10-minute oral as part of his English assessment.

And he used the headphones to make a knockout speech in front of 200 classmates at his final school assembly. Staff and students were moved to tears and Mushy was deservedly given a standing ovation for his efforts.

He even cracked a joke, saying it was a good thing he didn’t aspire to work at a call centre, because he probably wouldn’t survive the first day. But then came the tears.

Mushy still has a slight stammer but reckons his speech has improved 80 per cent this year since adopting Mr Burton’s technique, the Daily Mail reports.

His story was captured for the Channel 4 show Educating Yorkshire, which is a fly-on-the-wall documentary series set inside the Thornhill Community Academy near Leeds in England.

Starwood Hotels CEO Frits van Paasschen has a punishing training regime. Picture: AP.

October 25, 2013             11:52PM

FRITS van Paasschen is standing with his bike on the edge of Central Park. It’s a brisk autumn morning. The city has yet to fully wake but he’s eager to ride.

The CEO of Starwood Hotels & Resorts – best known for brands like Sheraton, Westin, St. Regis and W – exercises six days a week no matter where he is in the world. These are not light workouts. Van Paasschen, 52, just completed his first Ironman triathlon – 2.4 miles of swimming, 112 miles of cycling, and a 26.2-mile run. It took 12 hours and 44 minutes.

Since taking over as CEO in September 2007, van Paasschen – who is vegan – has injected parts of his lifestyle into Starwood’s hotels. He’s changed menus to make them healthier, for instance, and made it easier for road warriors to work out.

Given his penchant for exercise, I suggested a bike ride as a way to learn more about him and the company.

Which brings us to a chilly October morning two weeks ago.

Dressed in back spandex biking shorts and cycling jerseys, we head out for laps through the park. I am not a triathlete, so van Paasschen promises to take it easy.

“So have you done this before?” he asks. No. Most of my reporting is stationary. “Yeah, I can’t say I’ve been interviewed on a bike either.”

His love of fitness started at age 7 while watching the 1968 Mexico City Summer Olympics on TV.

“I thought, OK, I’m going to go out and be in the Olympics and I started running,” van Paasschen says. “I realised after a few years there was no way I was going to go to the Olympics, let alone even compete at a high level. But I also just kind of, I just fell in love with doing it.”

Biking came later, when a junior high school gym teacher on Mercer Island, Wash., would take van Paasschen’s class out for long rides at the end of the day.

Starwood guests can see those influences today.

Westin hotels loan guests running shoes and clothing. New menus have been crafted around foods thought to improve well-being and longevity such as green tea, honey, blueberries and kiwis. And the company’s newest brand, Element, offers bicycles.

“The whole idea is that you’ll feel better after your stay,” van Paasschen says as we speed past some joggers. It doesn’t matter that nearly three times as many guests use Sheraton’s free lobby computers than use the hotel gym. It’s important that the gym is available. “It strikes me that more people have the intention of working out than not.”

The number of Starwood hotels has grown 28 per cent during van Paasschen’s tenure to 1,150 today and is expected to hit 1,500 by the end of 2018. His company isn’t the largest; Holiday Inn owner Intercontinental Hotels Group holds that title with 4,600 properties worldwide. But Starwood is trying to position itself as the biggest luxury hotel group. One out of every seven hotels that Starwood has planned is a luxury property.

“People are surprised to hear how fast the luxury segment is growing,” van Paasschen says. “Our three luxury brands – W, Luxury Collection and St. Regis – have essentially doubled their footprint in the last six years, even with the financial crisis.”

Most of that growth is overseas.

Starwood, based in Stamford, Conn., opened 67 new hotels in the past 12 months. Only a third of them were in the United States. The focus for van Paasschen has been on China, the United Arab Emirates, India and Latin America.

“The hotel business grows alongside economic growth,” he says. “So as you can imagine, wherever there’s the kind of massive growth and urbanisation we’re seeing in so many markets around the world, that’s where the majority of new hotels are being built.”

It seems to be working. In the last 12 months, Starwood has earned $649 million, up about 12 per cent from the prior year. Its revenue per available room – a combination of occupancy levels and room rate – is up 4.2 per cent system-wide this year and an impressive 8.5 per cent at its luxury properties.

Prior to arriving at Starwood, van Paasschen was CEO of Coors Brewing Co. and before that, he held several positions with Nike, ultimately overseeing its business in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. He was previously a vice president in finance at Disney Consumer Products and began his career as a consultant at the Boston Consulting Group and McKinsey & Co.

While at Nike, it was routine to have meetings while jogging, giving van Paasschen an informal chance to give updates to his boss. Now, at Starwood, when van Paasschen travels, somebody on the hotel staff usually invites him on a run or a bike ride.

“A run in the morning is sometimes the best way to see a place right, particularly if the rest of your day is booked,” he says. “You end up in some places you wouldn’t expect.”

Managers who work for van Paasschen know that feeling. He moved the company’s entire leadership team to Shanghai for a month in 2011 and to Dubai for a month earlier this year. He plans another month overseas in 2015. He wants his staff to better understand the cultures they are opening hotels in.

“One of the best ways to draw attention to something is to go there,” he says, adding that staff back at headquarters in Connecticut had to adjust to doing business across several time zones. “My focus was to reinforce the notion of a global mindset.”

“There’s just something different about actually seeing entire cities being built in one stroke,” he adds.

We near Central Park’s Great Hill and I ask if he minds peddling up the steep incline or wants to take a flat shortcut. Van Paasschen says that “climbing is really my great weak spot in cycling.” But then he flies up the hill, answering questions the whole time.

That shouldn’t have been a surprise. Last year, he did a four-day charity bike ride that covered 350 miles from Chamonix, France, through the Alps, to Monaco. It included some of the most challenging, high-altitude climbs from the Tour de France. This year, he rode from Salzburg, Austria to Munich.

“What I’ve learned is on those climbs, I’m going my own speed and it’s a lot slower than most everybody else’s,” he says.

So, I wonder, is van Paasschen one of the most fit CEOs in America?

“I’m not competing against other CEOs,” he says. “It’s really a kind of a personal goal setting thing.”

DNA tests have confirmed a Bulgarian Roma couple as the biological parents of mystery child Maria, found in Greece last week, Bulgarian officials say.

The officials are investigating whether Sasha Ruseva and Atanas Rusev sold the child – a crime that could result in a jail sentence.

The Greek couple with whom Maria was found, Christos Salis and Eleftheria Dimopoulou, have since been charged with child abduction. They insist the girl was given to them.

Mark Lowen in Athens says police will be left “red-faced” now that the story they were given when they removed Maria appears to have stood up.

Junior featherweight Francisco “Frankie” Leal, who suffered an eighth-round knockout loss Saturday night to Raul Hirales in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, died Tuesday from a brain injury suffered in the bout. He was 26.

Leal faced Mexican countryman Hirales on the Omar Chavez-Joachim Alcine undercard in a fight televised across Mexico and on Azteca America in the United States. Hirales dominated the fight and knocked Leal down in the sixth round with a clean right hand. Then, in the final moments of the eighth round, Hirales connected with another clean right hand to the head, and Leal went down again. He initially beat the referee’s count but immediately collapsed, and the fight was waved off with 10 seconds left in the round.

Leal, nicknamed “Little Soldier,” was immediately surrounded by medical personnel. He was taken from the ring on a stretcher and slipped into a coma. He was admitted to a hospital in Cabo San Lucas but later was transferred to San Diego, where he died.

“This hurts a lot,” said promoter Fernando Beltran of Zanfer Promotions, which put on the card. “We knew that Frankie Leal was a good kid, a great fighter, a warrior in and out of the ring. As a company we took responsibility and tried to save his life as much as humanly possible. Now we are united in the grief felt by his family and his boxing family. We will try to help, whatever is needed.”

Some have questioned whether Leal (20-8-3, 13 KOs), a professional fighter since 2005, should have still been fighting after the brutal knockout he suffered in March 2012. Russia’s Evgeny Gradovich, who went on to win a featherweight world title, knocked him out in the 10th round of a fight in San Antonio, after which Leal was taken from the ring on a stretcher and hospitalized. Leal recovered and fought five more times, going 3-2.

“It hurts that this happened,” Beltran said. “Our prayers are with his family. We knew that Leal was a fine young man. We will try our best to support his family in this difficult time.”

In 2009, Leal fought for a junior featherweight world title in his hometown of Mexicali but got knocked down in the first round and stopped in the eighth round by then-unified titleholder Celestino Caballero of Panama.

A New Brunswick father is garnering international attention for his unique photo shoot.

Anthony Stuart, of Grand Bay-Westfield, convinced his newly pregnant wife, Kristi, to pose as a magician’s assistant for a series of photographs that would condense the pregnancy into seven photos.

“I’m surprised it’s travelled around this much. I was thinking it would just be friends and family [sharing the post] but it’s really ballooned,” Stuart told CBC New Brunswick’s Paul Castle.

In the photos, partly inspired by the Harry Potter stories, Stuart dons a magician’s cape and top hat and, with the wave of his magic wand, presto!: It’s the world’s shortest pregnancy.

Stuart posted the photo series to his blog under the title The Magic Show. Since then the post — picked up by BuzzFeed, Babble and numerous other content-sharing websites including Russian and Brazilian blogs — has gone viral with over 170,000 views.
