David Leigh

8/4/11 at 7:11 PM

Guardian investigations editor David Leigh, a senior member of the team that uncovered the News of the World hacking scandal, himself admitted to hacking voicemails and other ethically dodgy journalistic practices in the pages of his very own newspaper.

“The trick was a simple one: the businessman in question had inadvertently left his pin code on a print-out and all that was needed was to dial straight into his voicemail,” he wrote in 2006. “There is certainly a voyeuristic thrill in hearing another person’s private messages.”

A Guardian spokeswoman told the UK free paper Metro: “The Guardian does not and has not authorised phone hacking.”

Leigh’s article was written after the arrest of Clive Goodman, the royal editor of the News of the World who served four months in jail for voicemail hacking and has been re-arrested during the current inquiry. Leigh said that deceptive methods like phone hacking were sometimes defensible if they are “clearly in the public interest.”

Unlike Goodman, I was not interested in witless tittle-tattle about the royal family. I was looking for evidence of bribery and corruption. And unlike the News of the World, I was not paying a private detective to routinely help me with circulation-boosting snippets. I think the rule should be that deceptions, lies and stings should only be used as a last resort, and only when it is clearly in the public interest. And, as for actually breaking the law? Well, it is hard to keep on the right side of legality on all occasions.

That kind of nuanced moral argument is unlikely to win over many people in Britain given the current climate of outrage. Leigh’s disclosure might be the biggest boon for Rupert Murdoch since a certain pie-thrower got a beat down.

Stuart Kuttner
4:21pm UK, Tuesday August 02, 2011

A man who was a ‘key’ figure at News International has been arrested as part of the phone-hacking inquiry according to Sky sources.

The man was detained after attending an appointment at a police station in North London this morning.

It is believed the man who was arrested is 71-year old Stuart Kuttner who is a former managing editor of the News Of The World.

Mr Kuttner left his role at the NOTW in 2009. He had denied that his resignation was related to the phone-hacking scandals.

He was detained on suspicion of conspiring to intercept communications and on suspicion of inappropriate payments to police.

Mr Kuttner is the 11th person to be arrested over the phone-hacking scandal.

Those detained previously include former News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks and former editor of the News Of The World, Andy Coulson, who also worked as David Cameron’s communications chief before resigning in January.

News International closed down the News Of The World newspaper as a result of the scandal.

Glenn Mulcaire
8 July 2011   11:01 ET

“Trigger” to friends in his former life as a striker at AFC Wimbledon, and to everyone else the private investigator turned phone hacker who brought down the News of the World (NoW). Who is Glenn Mulcaire?

Like the way he practised the “dark arts” in Fleet Street to unearth mobile phone details for the News of the World, Glenn Mulcaire lives his life in the shadows.

Until earlier this week, when he broke his silence to apologise to those hurt or upset by his activities, he has remained out of the public glare while the scandal snowballed around him.

The father-of-five said despite everything written about him, he had chosen never to respond publicly, until now.

It was the ever-more sinister nature of recent allegations against him that, in part, led him to issue his public apology.

Among other things, he is accused of intercepting messages left by relatives for murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler while she was missing.

And he is alleged to have had the phone numbers of relatives of service personnel killed in Iraq and Afghanistan in his files.

While making no direct reference to the hacking of Milly’s phone, Mulcaire said he never meant to interfere with any police inquiry.

“I want to apologise to anybody who was hurt or upset by what I have done,” he said.

“I’ve been to court. I’ve pleaded guilty. And I’ve gone to prison and been punished. I still face the possibility of further criminal prosecution.”

He added that there was “relentless pressure” and “constant demand” for results while working for the NoW.

“I knew what we did pushed the limits ethically. But, at the time, I didn’t understand that I had broken the law at all.”

‘Reformed character’He also – ironically given his track record – asked for privacy for his wife and children.

“I know I have brought the vilification I am experiencing upon myself, but I do ask media to leave my family and my children, who are all blameless, alone,” he said.

Mulcaire, 40, from Sutton in Surrey, is no stranger to double standards.

It was while running a company – Nine Consultancy – that offered a service protecting clients from media intrusion that he first caught the eye of the NoW.

Glenn Mulcaire
The former private investigator says he wants to put the scandal behind him

He had a year’s contract with the Sunday paper for “research and information services” worth £104,988 and also received £12,300 in cash from the tabloid.

In reality, he was providing the newspaper with the mobile phone details of the rich, powerful and famous and was eventually arrested in August 2006.

Mulcaire and then NoW royal editor Clive Goodman were jailed for six months and four months respectively in January 2007 after admitting intercepting voicemail messages on royal aides’ phones, including some left by Prince William.

Mulcaire was also convicted of intercepting the messages of public figures including publicist Max Clifford, Lib Dem MP Simon Hughes and actress Elle MacPherson.

To his friends and fellow sportsmen at AFC Wimbledon, where Mulcaire played five years earlier, some may wonder why he did not stick to football.

As a striker for the lower league club founded in the aftermath of Wimbledon FC’s move to Milton Keynes, Mulcaire struck his way into the club’s history books.

His left-foot volley from outside the area in a friendly against Bromley in 2002 was the club’s first ever goal.

AFC Wimbledon’s chief executive, Erik Samuelson, 63, recalled: “He was long, lean and rangy, never a physical or muscular player and with no great pace, but he had a good shot on him and a good eye for the goal.”

He said “Trigger” played for the first team in 2002 on a number of occasions, but was never a first team regular and soon faded into the background.

“He had a terrific shot on him though, there’s no question about that,” he added.

In February this year, Mulcaire was banned from driving for a year and fined £1,000 at Sutton Magistrates’ Court after admitting a drink-driving charge.

He told the court he had driven a quarter of a mile from a local pub to his home in Cheam late one evening because his eldest daughter had a medical emergency.

Speaking before the hearing, he told reporters he was a “reformed character” determined to put the hacking scandal behind him.

With the News of the World closing, two new inquiries announced, fresh arrests and almost daily developments, it remains to be seen whether he will get his wish.

The actor Hugh Grant has been speaking about how he recorded a conversation between himself and Paul McMullen, in which the journalist revealed details of phone hacking by the media.

Details of the exchange were then revealed by Mr Grant in the New Statesman.

Hugh Grant has said that he has no confidence in News International taking
action against those who may be responsible for the alleged hacking of the phone
of Milly Dowler.

It is claimed a private investigator working for the News of the World (NoW)
hacked into the voicemail of the murdered girl while she was missing.

The actor, who has long said that his phone was hacked by the NoW, said that
the editors in charge of the paper at the time of the allegations were either
incompetent, or not telling the truth.

The chief executive of the News International media group, Rebekah Brooks,
says she’s shocked and appalled by the hacking allegations. Mrs Brooks, the
paper’s editor at the time, promised the strongest possible action if the case
was proven.
