A mother on board a plane that crashed in remote southwest Alaska made a frantic phone call for help resuscitating her 5-month-old baby, then left the fatally injured boy to lead searchers hampered by cold and fog to the crash site.

Melanie Coffee, 25, of Mountain Village walked nearly a mile toward lights in the village of Saint Marys to meet rescuers Friday night.

“I believe she’s the real hero in this,” said Saint Marys Village Police Officer Fred Lamont Jr., one of the dozens from his community and surrounding villages who responded to the crash that killed four and injured six.

The Hageland Aviation Cessna 208 turboprop left Bethel at 5:40 p.m. on a scheduled flight for Mountain Village and eventually Saint Marys.

Saint Marys, like scores of other Alaska villages, is off the state road system. People routinely use small aircraft to reach regional hubs where they can catch another plane to complete trips to Anchorage or other cities.

Megan Peters, a spokeswoman for the Alaska State Troopers, said the airplane would have been flying in freezing rain with a mile of visibility and a 300-foot ceiling. Lamont described conditions as ice fog with moisture that stuck to vehicles.

The airplane never reached Mountain Village. It crashed around 6:30 p.m. four miles from Saint Marys, said Clint Johnson, head of the National Transportation Safety Board in Alaska.

Pilot Terry Hansen, 68, passengers Rose Polty, 57, Richard Polty, 65, and the infant, Wyatt Coffee, died in the crash.

The survivors included Melanie Coffee, Pauline Johnson, 37, Kylan Johnson, 14, Tanya Lawrence, 35, Garrett Moses, 30, and Shannon Lawrence. All were seriously injured and four were in critical condition, Lamont said. All but Hansen and Shannon Lawrence are from Mountain Village, troopers said. Hansen was from Bethel, according to troopers. Information wasn’t available about where Lawrence lived.

Lamont, the village police officer, is also trained as a health aide and was working with an ambulance driver Friday. At about 7 p.m., he said, Melanie Coffee called another on-duty health aide to say the airplane had crashed and she needed assistance.

“She was trying to do CPR to her newborn baby,” Lamont said. “She called for help.”

Lamont and the driver headed out in the ambulance to look for the crash. Other health officials put out the call for responders. Two state troopers assigned to the community joined the effort. People from Mountain Village and Pitka’s Point, which are connected to Saint Marys by local roads, helped search by car and snowmobile.

“Whoever had a vehicle was out there looking,” Lamont said

Fog hampered the search and responders could not immediately locate the crash site despite speaking to the injured.

“We had no clue,” Lamont said.

Coffee, who suffered chest trauma, tried whistling to alert searchers, Lamont said. She considered starting a fire to get their attention but eventually decided to start walking toward village lights. A GCI communications tower with a red strobe led her three-quarters of a mile to the village landfill.

“That’s where everyone found her,” Lamont said.

She led searchers back to the crash site. It was not accessible by snowmobile. Rescuers put the injured on stretchers and carried them out on foot to the landfill where they could be transported by ambulance to the village and then flown out.

Emma Morano, pictured when she was younger. Picture: AllTimeTopTens / YouTube

DECEMBER 01, 2013            3:28PM

EUROPE’S oldest woman Emma Morano just turned 114 and she credits her long life to a diet tip a doctor gave her when she was 20 years old.

Ms Morano was born in 1899 and is the fifth-oldest person in the world.

The super centenarian lives in Verbania in northern Italy, is in “good health” and still spends her days doing housework and cooking, La Stampa reports .

Ms Morano says her eating habits – including raw egg every day – have helped her live so long.

“For breakfast I eat biscuits with milk or water,” she said.

“Then during the day I eat two eggs – one raw and one cooked – just like the doctor recommended when I was 20 years old. For lunch I’ll eat pasta and minced meat then for dinner, I’ll have just a glass of milk.”

She also “eats a sweet now and then to pass the times”.

Sleep is another important factor in her longevity. Ms Morano goes to bed before 7pm every night and wakes up before 6am.

And long life seems to run in her family – her sister lived to be 102.

Ms Morano was born in Vercelli into a family of eight children.

She married in 1926 and had a child who tragically died when he was six months old. She separated from her husband in 1938 but remained legally married.

Throughout her life Ms Morano worked in factories and in the kitchen of a boarding school. She retired at the age of 75.

“I LOVE you guys” were the last words teenage bodyboarder Zac Young told the friends that pulled him from water after a shark attack took his life on the NSW North Coast.

Mr Young and his friends Lindsy Isaac, Kurt Gillan, 18, and Shayden Schrader, 15, had been surfing 200m from shore at Campbells Beach north of Coffs Harbour when an eight-foot tiger shark came up from behind Zac.

Hundreds of surfers later took to the ocean at Town Beach Port Macquarie in memory of Zac Young.

They formed a circle before holding a minute silence.

First out was Lindsy Isaac and a friend who had written on his board ‘Rip zac young died doing what he loved. Alway remember (sic). Never forgotten’

His friend Lindsy Isaac bravely said Zac fought off the shark before he and his friends managed to pull him to shore and call for help.

“It’s the scariest thing I’ve ever done,” Lindsy said outside a memorial service at Port Macquarie High School this morning.

Lindsy said the last thing Zac said to them was “I love you guys, I love you so much.”

“He died doing what he loved to do,” Lindsy said. “He loved God and surfing.”

In front of a packed memorial service Zac’s father Kevin praised his son’s friends before he hugged and kissed them.

“These three young guys didn’t run, they didn’t run,” Mr Young wept. “I want you to know these three guys.”

Mr Young told the congregation that he had only heard the real story 15 minutes before the service and that he did not want to go into the details.

“They told me he seemed to be at peace and not in pain,” he said.

Zac was mauled at Reicks Point surf break, Campbell’s Beach, north of Coffs Harbour, NSW, about 2pm yesterday. It is understood both his legs were nearly severed in the attack.

The trio carried him to the beach and began CPR but he died at the scene.

“His mates struggled with the shark for a short time. Then the shark has let go and friends then courageously managed to get him to shore,” Inspector Joanna Reid told media at the scene.

An ambulance spokeswoman said: “The swimmers pulled him out of the water but he died of a cardiac arrest.”

A police source said swimmers had seen a shape in the water earlier in the day but had discounted any threat.

They said they thought they saw something but decided it was nothing,” the source said.

All beaches in Coffs Harbour were closed immediately as local water police patrolled the waters in search of the shark.

The area is home to a break known as The Well, popular among bodyboarders, drawing riders from up and down the coast.

It is next to a deep channel that attracts schools of jewfish and sharks that feed on them.

On Friday, Mr Young had posted a request on his Facebook page asking friends if anyone had a spare board he could borrow.

As word spread about his death, the Port Macquarie Bodyboard Association Facebook page was flooded with tributes from fellow surfers and friends.

“Love you brother. I know you’re surfing the sickest barrels in Heaven right now,” said Brandon Erga.

Maria Field-Azzopardi added: “A very big loss to the world – what a wonderful young Man.”

Jill Cummings said: He had the best smile … Completely lit up the room with it.

Grant Maniac urged bodyboarders to “look after for each other”

Mr Young, who had been undertaking an internship at non-profit group Youth For Christ, had been celebrating getting his driver’s licence ahead of the holidays.

“I only saw him yesterday, we are all shocked,” a Youth For Christ spokesman said. “He had just gotten his P-plates, he was always full of life.”

A devout Christian, Mr Young often posted what he described as “life’s tips” on his Facebook page.

“God is calling each of us to impact the nations and make history. My prayer is that you find out what your calling is. Make it your vision and go for it,” he said.

A few days earlier, he posted another life tip: “Stop looking at what you don’t have, and start thanking God for what you do :)”

A NSW Primary Industries shark biologist will travel to the scene to study the attack to help identify the shark.

Greg Hackfath, chief lifeguard for Coffs Harbour City Council, said shark issues in the area were rare.

“We’ve had two recorded shark attacks ever – that’s in 150 years of settlement. So it’s highly unusual,” Mr Hackfath said.

“We see sharks but the common saying is that you don’t worry about them because they’re well fed.

“You might see one every now and then but they’d be chasing a school of fish.”

Mr Young and his mate Mr Gillan were keen bodyboarding competitors, entering local events and posting pictures online.

Caroline Berg Eriksen pictured just four days after giving birth.

DECEMBER 01, 2013             10:31AM

A FOOTBALLER’S wife has been labelled “wildly provocative” after posting a picture of her washboard abs four days after giving birth.

Norwegian Caroline Berg Eriksen gave birth to daughter Nelia on Monday and posted a selfie on Instagram dressed in nothing but underwear with the caption “I feel so empty, and still not … 4 days after birth.”

The fitness blogger – who is married to Norwegian Premier League player Lars-Kristian Eriksen and blogs under the name Fotballfrue meaning “footballer’s wife” – has since been slammed in her native media who have accused her of placing unfair pressure on new mothers to lose weight immediately after birth.

Blogger Suzanna Aabel wrote for Dagbladet newspaper, saying she was unsure Ms Berg Eriksen and her even “belonged to the same species”, The Local reports .

“In my eyes, this picture is wildly provocative,” Ms Aabel wrote. “Not just because I’m the chubby girl who’s envious of her petite figure, but because I began to despise my own body when I was about twelve.”

Comments on Ms Berg Eriksen’s Instagram post were just as scathing.

“Seriously this is a joke!” one user wrote.

Another said: “Is it really necessary to post a halvnakent picture of themselves?! It’s just to show off, thinking’s not much on how that image can affect readers.”

Ms Berg Eriksen hit back on Facebook, saying: “I let out the picture because I’m proud of myself and my body for something as tough as a pregnancy/birth, and I think all mothers, regardless of the body shall be.”

Other commenter’s on Ms Berg Eriksen’s Instagram page praised her for being proud of her body.

“Amazing! Why shouldn’t you look good?! I say congratulations on the birth if [sic] your daughter & congratulations for staying trim & having a great figure!” one poster said.

Gro Nylander, head of the women’s clinic at Norway’s National Hospital (Rikshospitalet), also jumped to Ms Berg Eriksen’s defence.

“I don’t think we should bully The Footballer’s Wife,” Nylander told the Aftenpostennewspaper. “Life is unfair, some people have flat stomachs while others have pouts.”

The doctor said new mothers should understand that their bodies respond differently to pregnancy and birth, and they should not compare themselves with other women.

“The most important thing is to be kind to your body. It’s a positive thing to have a few extra kilos on your body after birth,” Dr Nylander said.

Tarun Tejpal, the 50-year-old founder and editor-in-chief of India's leading investigative magazine Tehelka, speaks with the media upon his arrival at the airport on his way to Goa, in New Delhi 29 November 2013

30 November 2013                11:20 ET

The editor of a prominent Indian news magazine has been arrested over sexual assault allegations, after a court rejected an extension of his bail.

The judge declined to extend Tarun Tejpal’s earlier “pre-bail” award, which had temporarily lifted the threat of arrest.

Mr Tejpal has not been formally charged but denies the accusations against him.

His unnamed accuser has said what he did “falls within the legal definition of rape”.

She initially levelled claims against Mr Tejpal in the media following the alleged incident at an event organised by the Tehelka magazine in Goa earlier this month.

This prompted police to launch an investigation with which she is now co-operating.

Six journalists, including the managing editor of the publication, have resigned over the controversy.

No ‘easy battle’

Under Indian law, pre-trial bail can be sought if an individual fears possible arrest.

Mr Tejpal was taken into custody within an hour of the court in Panaji, Goa, issuing its ruling.

The prosecution argued that Mr Tejpal should be arrested so he could be properly interrogated and his version of events cross-checked.

His lawyer argued that Mr Tejpal had agreed to abide by court-dictated conditions including the surrender of his passport if pre-bail was extended.

Geeta Luthra argued that Mr Tejpal was at risk of “humiliation and disgrace” if arrested.

The scandal has been dominating headlines in India, with critics accusing Tehelka magazine – one of India’s top investigative titles, which has exposed gender inequality and officially sanctioned misogyny – of hypocrisy and double standards, say correspondents.

The case has resonated with particular force following the emotive case of a woman who was brutally gang raped and murdered in Delhi last year.

In a statement released to media, Mr Tejpal’s accuser rejected claims her complaint was part of a “pre-election political conspiracy”.

“By filing my complaint, I have lost not just a job that I loved, but much-needed financial security and the independence of my salary. I have also opened myself to personal and slanderous attack.

“This will not be an easy battle,” she said.

What is the best way for the average person to see the world’s greatest mountain range–the Himalayas? Fortunately, there is now a good answer. The Annapurna Circuit in Nepal is the most popular footpath in Asia. Its genius lies in its design. Trekkers wind their way around and along some of the world’s greatest peaks, ultimately getting near 18,000 feet, without ever having to do any ‘technical climbing’. This Circuit is widely considered one of the world’s great treks; mortals from all around the world are coming to Nepal for the unique chance to ‘get high’. Bill Walker (‘Skywalker’) struggled his way through the Annapurna Circuit in 2012. He has written this entertaining tale of his journey in this land of Sherpas, cold, altitude, and rushing water.

Since the times of Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin, Americans have headed off to Europe on odysseys of self-improvement. But until recently, Americans have not chosen ‘the best way’—El Camino de Santiago. Bill Walker (“Skywalker”) decided to undertake this 500 mile trek, that stretches from the Pyrenees in southern France to Santiago in Northwest Spain. Better yet, he did it in the ‘Holy Year’ of 2010. Fully 200,000 pilgrims were struggling on foot to make it to the Great Gothic Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela. The Camino is supposed to be a religious-spiritual pilgrimage. But Walker had also been told that it was “The European Divorcee Trail.” At Walker’s side was his 18 year-old nephew, Gavin, who thrives with his special brand of Fonzie-like charm. The towel-snapping banter between the two of them is reminiscent of the frat-boy dialogue between Bill Bryson and Katz. Better yet, the two of them learn just how delightful the French really can be (except, of course, when they’re being impossible), why the Germans are almost all model pilgrims, and the tragi-glorious roots of the Spanish national character.

The Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail (PCT )is the perfect place for an average person to do something extraordinary. Bill Walker (“Skywalker”), who stands 6’11”, might seem like anything but average. Yet in a brutally honest tone, he lays to bare all his considerable weaknesses and fears. Among these are crushing weight loss and fatigue, along with a fear of getting lost or a bear stealing his food. Nonetheless, he is bound and determined to hike the PCT, which at 2,663 miles, runs all the way from Mexico to Canada.

The PCT’s calling card is its stunning beauty. It has a diversity of geography unequaled by any footpath in the world. Haunting and beckoning the PCT hiker are the implacable desert, the towering majesty of the so-called High Sierra, and the ruggedly bleak, northern Cascade range. Indeed, the PCT hiker faces much greater extremes of terrain and climate than on the famed Appalachian Trail. Completing this demanding challenge calls for overwhelming clarity of purpose. Walker’s signature characteristic as a writer is his real talent in capturing people (“Skywalker’s humor, his delight in human foibles appeal to a broad audience.”–Jeff Minnick, Smoky Mountain Book News). Obviously, he is a people person because he runs into and vividly describes a truly colorful cast of characters from seemingly all walks of American life. Among these are Uber Bitch, Shit Bag, and Serial Killer; the reader learns how these hikers ended up with their names (hint: blunders).

The reader need not worry that Walker is a bully. Throughout this irreverent narrative, he turns his considerable supply of humor back on himself in ruthlessly self-deprecating fashion. It all makes for a delightful read.

Why would a middle-aged businessman, who had never even spent a single night outdoors, attempt to hike the entire Appalachian trail in one year? Bill Walker, a former commodities trader in Chicago and London, and an avid walker, had developed a virtual obsession to thru-hike the 2,175 mile AT. In the spring of 2005 he set off, determined to hike this Georgia-to-northern Maine wilderness trail before the arrival of winter. Immediately, he realized he had plunged into a whole new world. The AT has some ferociously difficult terrain, winding through dramatically diverse geography, and covers the very highest peaks in the East.

Walker’s near 7-foot height earned him the trail name, Skywalker, and drew envious raves from fellow hikers. But that same height made him more vulnerable to weight loss, cold weather, and crushing fatigue. An elemental fear of bears, snakes, and getting lost also loomed large. The journey often seemed like a see-saw battle between his determination vs. his blunders. The Appalachian Trail has developed a remarkable culture over the years. No other country has a footpath even remotely as popular. Up to four million people hike on the AT at various points during any given year. Mortals are compelled–or perhaps cursed–to relive their lifetime adventure. This is Bill Walker’s (Skywalker’s) unforgettable version, leavened with ruthlessly self-deprecating humor. His fondest hope is to inspire other rookies and novice hikers, to give the Appalachian Trail a try as well.

Bill Walker attended the University of Georgia where he received a Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Accounting. He spent the two most boring years of his life as a tax accountant at Arthur Andersen in Atlanta.

Walker then became a commodities broker for the next fourteen years, first at the Chicago Board of Trade, then at the London International Financial Futures Exchange. That was anything but boring. But in 2001, the entire business was computerized. It was again time to sharply change course.

Walker became a VISTA volunteer and was the welfare-reform coordinator for the South Texas region. He then moved to Latin America where he taught English as a Second Language in five different countries.

In 2005, he thru-hiked the 2,175 mile Appalachian Trail. Upon completion, he wrote Skywalker–Close Encounters on the Appalachian Trail. This book has sold steadily on Amazon.com. In 2009, Walker hiked the 2,663 mile Pacific Crest Trail. He recently published a narrative of that journey called, Skywalker–Highs and Lows on the Pacific Crest Trail, which is the number one selling book on the Pacific Crest Trail.

Coma: Chandler Webb, 19, lies in his hospital bed in Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Utah - from which he never awoke and passed away on Tuesday - just five weeks after he was given a flu-shot

14:52 EST                 25 November 2013

The Utah mother who claims her otherwise healthy teenage son died because of side-effects from a flu-shot has revealed her boy pleaded with doctor’s to save him before he lapsed into a coma.

As she made the difficult decision to release heartbreaking pictures of her son, Chandler, 19, languishing in his hospital bed, Lori Webb described how scared he became as his health rapidly deteriorated following his routine vaccination on October 15th.

Suffering violent episodes of vomiting and debilitating headaches, Chandler’s condition worsened in the week after the shot until he was placed on life-support at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Utah, begging, ‘Doctor’s, save me.’

Sports loving Chandler, was given his first ever shot last month after agreeing to travel on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

However, the day after receiving the flu and tuberculosis shots, the Brighton High School graduate began suffering severe vomiting and was eventually admitted to hospital in Murray where he fell into a coma after a week of unexplained illness.

Despite doctor’s best efforts they could not diagnose him, despite putting him through a battery of tests.

Officially Chandler’s direct cause of death was swelling of the brain, but speaking to Fox News, Lori explained that she believes the vaccination was the reason – and that doctors should have asked sooner if her son had recently been given a shot.

‘What attacked his brain happened so quickly within 15 hours,’ Webb said on Fox and Friends.

‘From one CT scan to the next, there was so much pressure and swelling on the brain that it crushed his brain stem.’

Chandler was ultimately taken off life support after a month in a coma and he died on Tuesday after 28 days in the hospital.

‘He was sicker than he has ever been in his life. He says he’s never shook so hard his whole life. He had the worst headache, threw up, and he slept for about two and a half days and didn’t eat anything during that time,’ said Webb to the Salt Lake Tribune.

According to a report from the Salt Lake Tribune, Webb has declined an autopsy, as she believes that a pending brain biopsy will reveal Chandler’s cause of death.

Chandler’s doctors have not discussed his case and public health officials repeated that the vaccine is safe and rarely has serious side effects.

Chandler’s medical team, which included six neurologists at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, tested him for every conceivable illness – including Lyme disease and sexually transmitted ones.

‘They checked every virus, every fungus, ever tick, west Nile they even checked for rabies,’ said Lori.  ‘And they can’t find anything…it was the most senseless, senseless, death.’

‘This was his first flu shot,’ Lori said. ‘He’d never had one before.’

‘I hate this. ‘I hate that I have to bury my son.’

Utah Department of Health spokesman Tom Hudachko said the state is aware of the case but can’t verify the cause of death nor whether it is investigating because of patient confidentiality.

He added that the health department has no record of anyone in Utah dying from a reaction to the vaccine, he said.

‘Like with other medical procedures, there can be side effects and adverse reactions,’ he said.

‘In the vast majority of those cases the side effects are not very severe — soreness at the injection site, low fever, achiness. Occasionally, yes, there are more severe side effects from receiving the vaccine.’

130 million people nationwide, nearly half of all Americans, decide to get the flu vaccine every year and side effects are extremely rare.

Out of those 130 million people, about 140 people report serious side-effects each year.

Chandler Webb was described as a healthy teen, who visited the gym five days a week before he fell ill.

Lori Webb described how as her son was taken off life-support she cut his hair for the last time and told him the story of ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’, just as she did when he was a child.

‘I can’t describe how hard it is to lose a child,’ she said.

‘We can’t wrap our heads around this… it’s so bizarre.’

Honduras National Party candidate for president, Juan Orlando

25 November 2013                 06:20 ET

Vote counting is taking place in Honduras, with both main presidential candidates claiming victory.

With more than half of votes declared, the conservative Juan Orlando Hernandez leads with about 34%, while Xiomara Castro has 28%, say election officials.

But Ms Castro, the wife of ousted ex-president Manuel Zelaya, told reporters that she has won.

Turnout was high, with millions of Hondurans voting for a new president, members of parliament and local mayors.

Around 5.4m Hondurans were registered to vote and authorities say there was a “massive turn-out”.

Voting took place amid tight security, but no serious incidents were reported. Honduras has the highest murder rate in the world.

Mr Hernandez declared victory when 24% of votes had been announced. “Thank God and thank you to the Honduran people for this triumph,” he posted on his Twitter page.

But Ms Castro also used her Twitter account to say she had won: “Based on the exit poll results that I have received from the whole country, I can tell you: I am the president of Honduras.”

She is hoping to become the first female president of Honduras. “Today, we can say that we have won,” Ms Castro told reporters.

David Matamoros, president of the electoral court, said final results were not expected until later on Monday.

“The preliminary results we have given so far do not show any tendency or declare any winner,” he said.

Opinions polls had pointed to a close race between Ms Castro and Mr Hernandez.

Mr Hernandez, whose National Party backed the ousting of Mr Zelaya in 2009, has vowed to restore order with more soldiers and police on the streets.

Ms Castro has proposed a community police force to tackle local crime, with more soldiers deployed to the borders to combat drug trafficking.

Analysts say victory for Mr Hernandez would be a blow to Mr Zelaya, who has hoped to stage a comeback behind his wife.

Mr Zelaya took office in 2006 but his interest in amending the constitution was interpreted by his opponents as a bid to seek a second term.

The Supreme Court, backed by Congress, ordered his removal from office and the military forced him out of the country.

Porfirio “Pepe” Lobo Sosa of the right-wing National Party won a November 2009 election organised by the interim authorities. Mr Lobo was sworn into office in January 2010 as Mr Zelaya went into exile.

The move, which plunged the country into political crisis, was denounced as a coup by US President Barack Obama and other foreign leaders.

Honduras is one of the poorest countries in Latin America. It also has the world’s highest murder rate, averaging 20 killings a day.

Much of the violence is blamed on gang violence and drug traffickers.

Nearly 30,000 police and soldiers were deployed to ensure security during Sunday’s elections.

A margin of just one vote is needed for a win – there is no run-off election.

President V Yanukovych.jpg

25 November 2013                      Last updated at 15:02 ET

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has defended his move to put on hold a historic deal with the EU, amid continuing mass protest rallies.

He said he was forced by economic necessity and the desire to protect those “most vulnerable”.

The EU has accused Russia of exerting heavy economic pressure on Ukraine.

Clashes between protesters and police continued on Monday. Meanwhile, jailed opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko announced an indefinite hunger strike.

‘No alternative’

Mr Yanukovych was speaking publicly for the first time since the announcement on Thursday that his government was halting preparations to sign the association and free trade agreements with the EU.

More confrontations between protesters and police early Monday morning in front of Ukraine’s government building indicate that the situation remains very volatile.

In an echo of the Orange Revolution nine years ago, protesters set up a tent camp in front of the main demonstration’s stage.

Ukrainian opposition leaders say political actions will continue through the week until the Vilnius summit, where Ukrainian officials were supposed to sign the free trade agreement with the EU.

Many demonstrators say that they believe President Yanukovych will succumb to the pressure of the rallies and complete another about-turn – and sign the agreement.

This of course depends on whether the protesters can maintain their own momentum over the coming days.

The decision triggered mass protests in Kiev and a number of other cities across Ukraine.

“I want peace and calm in our big Ukrainian family,” Mr Yanukovych said in a video statement, describing himself as a “father”.

He stressed that his government had not given up attempts to bring closer ties between Ukraine and the EU.

“I would like to underline this: there is no alternative to the creation of a society of European standards in Ukraine and my policies on this path always have been, and will continue to be, consistent.

“But I would be dishonest and unfair if I had not taken care of the most disadvantaged and vulnerable, who may carry the brunt during a transitional period.”

Mr Yanukovych’s government last week said it was halting preparations for signing the treaties, amid concern for possible mass job losses in the short-run.

Opponents are accusing the president of keeping talks with the EU alive while never intending to sign the deal at an EU summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, on 28-29 November.

They also say he has bowed to growing pressure from Russian President Vladimir Putin, who wants Kiev to join the Moscow-led Customs Union. The grouping also includes Belarus and Kazakhstan.

Mr Putin denies the claims, instead accusing the EU of trying to force Kiev into singing the agreements.

European Council President Herman Van Rompuy and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said on Monday the door was still open for Ukraine to sign the agreements at the summit in Vilnius.

“The Eastern Partnership is conceived as a win-win where we all stand to gain,” they said.

“It is up to Ukraine to freely decide what kind of engagement they seek with the European Union.

“We strongly disapprove of the Russian position and actions.”

Orange Revolution-2?

More than 100,000 people massed in Kiev’s European Square and Independence Square on Sunday, calling for a “European future without Yanukovych”.

Riot police used tear gas against demonstrators on Sunday and again on Monday, saying they had been pelted with objects.

Meanwhile, protesters have set up tents, implying they were planning to stay for the long haul.

The continuing protests are reminiscent of the Orange Revolution in 2004, which was sparked by anger over Mr Yanukovych’s declared victory in a presidential election his opponents said was rigged.

Tymoshenko, one of the leaders of the revolution who was jailed in 2011 for abuse of power, said on Monday she was starting a hunger strike in solidarity with the protesters.

She launched a similar fast last year in protest at her treatment, but stopped it after 20 days.

The EU has made her release from prison one of its conditions for signing the association agreement.

Would you lose a testicle to own one of these? One man is doing just that. Source: supplied

NOVEMBER 26, 2013             8:52AM

SOME men, when they see a Ferrari or Lambo fly past it leaves them with a yearning so strong they jokingly declare they’d lose a portion of their genitalia to own one. One man is literally going to such lengths by selling one of his testicles so he can buy his dream car. A Nissan?

Mark Parisi declared on CBS’s show The Doctors he will be donating one of his testicles to medical science for US$35,000 so he can buy himself a new Nissan 370. Most men might only lay their balls on the line for an exotic beauty, but Mr. Parisi is a bit more realistic with his expectations.

The fee for the testicle is the standard going rate by American medical science and just so happens to be approximately the same starting price for a Nissan 370Z V6 Coupe.

Ed Orgeron

November 24, 2013             4:25 p.m.

Marcus Allen has seen enough. He’s convinced.

The former Heisman Trophy winner from USC said Ed Orgeron has sufficiently proven he deserves to drop the interim title and become the Trojans’ head football coach. Allen isn’t part of any selection committee, but if he were, he would hire Orgeron.

“From the depths of despair, from a program that was flat-lining, he has made a tremendous turnaround,” said Allen, the first former player to talk to the team after Lane Kiffin was fired Sept. 29. “Here’s a guy who cares about his players, treats them like his sons, and he wants the very best for them. So he’s going to put you in the right position to be successful. He wants these guys to realize their dream, but he knows the only way to do it is to be tough.”

Four former USC players, all in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, were asked for their opinions on the school’s coaching situation and Orgeron, who has led the team to a 6-1 record since taking over the top job, including beating No. 4 Stanford on Nov. 16. The Trojans take a five-game winning streak into their regular-season finale against crosstown rival UCLA on Saturday at the Coliseum.

Along with Allen, safety Ron Lott, and offensive tackles Anthony Munoz and Ron Yary weighed in on how they think USC should proceed. None is directly involved in the coaching search or hiring process.

“To me, Ed Orgeron is like Marv Goux,” Lott said, referring to the legendary Trojans player-turned-assistant who coached at the school for three decades and died in 2002. “Ed Orgeron showed me, and showed a lot of people, that . . . in terms of moving forward, he’s got to be considered. He’s not only got to be considered, but he should be very high on the list.”

Yary is more measured in his endorsement of Orgeron, mostly deferring to USC Athletic Director Pat Haden.

“It’s not fair for me to think for Pat,” Yary said. “But if there’s a guy who’s stepping up to earn it, [Orgeron] has so far. He’s certainly turned the program around. . . . I’ve met Ed and hear a lot of good things about him from other people.

“I’m sure they’ll give him a fair opportunity to get the job. If he wins the rest of the games, I think he’s put himself up for a job offer.”

Orgeron asked Munoz to speak to the team before last month’s game at Notre Dame — the Trojans’ only loss under the interim coach — and the former cornerstone of the Cincinnati Bengals offensive line also led USC onto the field before a home game against Utah.

“I’d hate to be in Pat’s shoes right now,” Munoz said. “I think Ed, at least from me being there a couple of times, I think he’s done a phenomenal job. The whole atmosphere is different. Not once has he mentioned the lack of scholarships [because of NCAA sanctions]. That impresses me.

“When you hear the quarterback talk about how much he loves the guy, just going by the tweets, you can see that guys just love him. I’m sure there’s people that want the high-profile names, but I don’t know. If he wins out, he’s got to be strongly considered.”

Jack Del RioDenver Broncos interim coach and former USC linebacker, confirmed he interviewed with his alma mater Nov. 1 in Denver. USC has not confirmed it has spoken to anyone about the job. It might be worth noting that Boise State — coached by the widely coveted Chris Petersen — played at Colorado State, about an hour’s drive from Denver, the day after the Del Rio interview.

Allen said USC has historically succeeded when it has an inspirational leader as coach, as opposed to an offensive or defensive guru, someone more focused on Xs and O’s than personal relationships.

“It’s people, not plays,” Allen said. “You always hear those coaches say, ‘I don’t care if you like me, I just want to be respected.’ I mean, that’s a joke, dude. You want respect, but you want to be liked, too. Because if your players like you, they’ll give you even more.

“Coach O understands that. He’s recruited all these kids. He’s been in every single living room. He knows these kids, he knows their parents. He feels responsible, because they’re there because of him. He wants the best for them.”

Yuliana Avalos claims her picture has been used in hundreds of fake dating profiles without her consent. Picture: MySpace

NOVEMBER 25, 2013             10:29AM

A MODEL is suing a dating website claiming her picture has been used in hundreds of fake dating profiles without her consent.

Florida woman Yuliana Avalos is suing Match.com as part of a $1.5 billion class action lawsuit after she was contacted by dozens of men attracted to a fake profile of her.

According to a class-action lawsuit filed in Manhattan Federal Court last week, Match.com allegedly broke copyright laws and committed common law fraud by allowing fake profiles with photos of people to be approved without their consent.

The mother of one’s Lawyer Evan Spencer told abc News that Match.com could eliminate fake profiles if it used photo recognition software and checked IP addresses.

Mr Spencer said dozens of men had contacted his client after finding a fake profile for her on the site and had assumed she been in contact with them.

“Not a day goes by when someone doesn’t tell me that they saw my pictures posted on Match.com or another website,” Ms Avalos said.

According to the lawsuit, which has an unidentified number of plaintiffs, the fake profiles on the site are “one of the biggest conspiracies ever executed on the internet.”

It is understood those affected are seeking between $500 million and $1 billion in damages.

Lawyers for those affected say the dating site is partly at fault for the fake photo scandal since it is responsible for approving various profiles.

Heather Thorpe has been criticised for striking her heavily pregnant belly with a claw hammer.

NOVEMBER 25, 2013             11:00AM

A HEAVILY pregnant woman has been caught on camera hitting her baby bump with a hammer to prove how ‘hard’ her unborn child is.

Heather Thorpe, 24, was filmed by her former partner, Sean Hanlon, striking herself with the claw hammer around a month before giving birth to her son, Jonathon.

But when Mr Hanlon, 26, showed the video to police, officers refused to press charges, insisting no offence had been committed.

Yesterday Mr Hanlon said he was appalled at the decision, adding: “If there was a film of someone hitting a baby with a hammer they would be in handcuffs in 10 seconds flat.” Mr Hanlon shot the five-second video in the couple’s living room in October last year, just weeks before Miss Thorpe’s due date.

He said he had been filming her on his iPhone when she told him: “My baby’s hard as anything – just watch this.” He then began filming her as she walked over to his toolbox. The short clip shows Miss Thorpe lifting up her top to reveal her baby bump.

She then grabs the steel claw hammer and hits the side of her stomach twice, apparently not caring about the harm that could be inflicted on her unborn infant.

He said she had also punched herself before because “she wanted the baby to come out”.

Mr Hanlon, a security guard from Lea Village, Birmingham, said: “I was completely shocked, but Heather didn’t seem to care.

“I asked her what the hell she was doing but she just told me to stop overreacting. Jonathon was born and he was OK.” The couple later separated and Ms Thorpe went to police, accusing Mr Hanlon of domestic violence. When officers knocked on his door last December he told them she was lying and handed over the footage he had shot as evidence of her character.

Mr Hanlon said: “I couldn’t believe it when the police didn’t press charges. I also sent the video to social services who have been sending someone round to see her regularly, but anyone can put an act on in front of them.” Ms Thorpe’s family have claimed her current partner is Jonathon’s biological father, although the man himself has denied that.

Ms Thorpe, who now lives with her one-year-old son at the home of her parents in Chelmsley Wood, West Midlands, refused to comment yesterday.

The West Midlands Police investigation report of the incident, dated January 3, states that Ms Thorpe was thought to be eight months pregnant when the video was shot.

It says that a social worker estimated that “on a scale of 1-10 (one being the softest, 10 being the hardest) … the blows are around 5 or 6”.

The document adds that after delivering the blows “Heather puts the hammer down and gestures as if to say ‘See? I’ve done it’.” It also reveals that six weeks after Jonathan was born, Ms Thorpe bragged to social workers that he could give the ‘V-sign’ on demand.

Mr Hanlon released the video after a local paper ran a story last week about how Jonathan was a precocious ‘superkid’, quoting Ms Thorpe as saying he could walk, talk and read at the age of one.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: “A report was received in December 2012 from a member of the public regarding footage of a pregnant woman self-harming.

“A thorough investigation was undertaken by police and no criminal offences were found. The matter was referred to local adult and child services.”

A Long Island deli owner and his son were charged Saturday with scamming a customer out of a $1 million lottery ticket.

Nassau County police say a 34-year-old man who doesn’t speak English bought the ticket Thursday at the Peninsula Deli & Grocery in Hempstead.

The man scratched off his card, saw that he was a winner and handed it to 26-year-old Karim Jaghab to get his winnings, police said.

The ticket was worth $1 million, but Jaghab gave the man $1,000 in cash and kept the ticket, police said.

The customer became suspicious and went back Friday, police said. They say Jaghab and his 57-year-old father, Nabil Jaghab, the owner of the deli, tried to give him $10,000 and told him not to go to the police, authorities said.

The customer went to police, who determined that he had won the $1 million jackpot.

The Jaghabs, of East Meadow, were arraigned Saturday on grand larceny charges. Each was ordered held on $7,500 bond. According to Newsday, their attorney said it was a simple mistake on a payout on a lottery machine.

A similar case unfolded in Suffolk County this year when two Riverhead gas station clerks and the brother of one of the clerks were charged with scamming a customer out of a $74,892 prize.

In that case, police said the clerks gave the man $774 in cash. As with the Nassau case, the victim was an immigrant who speaks no English.

In another case in Syracuse, two brothers who claimed a $5 million lottery ticket sold at their family’s store were charged with scamming the winning ticket from a customer in 2006. One brother was sentenced this year to up to 25 years in prison for possessing the stolen ticket; both brothers were acquitted of conspiracy charges.

PHOTO: A postal worker was killed while on duty in Prince Georges County, Md.

U.S. postal worker in Maryland was shot and killed while on his route, according to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

Tyson Jerome Barnette, a 26-year-old letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, was found Saturday around 7 p.m. suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in Landover, Md.

Barnette was pronounced dead at the scene when police arrived.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Agency is investigating the murder alongside the local police department and is offering a $100,000 reward for any information that leads to the arrest of the perpetrator.

“We’re looking for any information that anyone might have about the individual responsible for the killing of the carrier or what may have transpired right before or right after,” Frank Schissler, a U.S. Postal Inspector and public information officer for U.S. Postal Inspection Service Agency, told ABCNews.com

According to the USPS, any person who kills or attempts to kill any federal officer or employee while they are on official duties could face the death penalty.

Anyone with information regarding the case is urged to call the U.S. Postal Inspection Service at 877-876-2455 or Prince George’s County Police at 301-772-4925.

Barnette’s death comes after a recent spate of attacks against postal workers over the last few months.

In a Tacoma, Wash., a postal worker was the subject of an unprovoked attack and punched three times while delivering mail. Another mail carrier was injured in Pennsylvania after he kicked a dog, thinking it was going to bite him, and the dog’s owner started to hit him. In Springfield, Ohio a female postal service worker was groped while delivering mail.

In Beaumont, Texas mail service was suspended for a week after a postal service employee was attacked.

PHOTO: A man in Brooklyn says hes a victim of the Knockout Game.

The Brooklyn, N.Y., man accused of assaulting an Orthodox Jew in what appears to be another case of the knockout game is being charged with a hate crime for the alleged attack.

Amrit Marajh, 28, was charged with harassment as a hate crime after he allegedly punched the 24-year-old Orthodox Jewish man Friday morning.

The unidentified victim believes he was attacked as part of the deadly “knockout” game, where an attacker aims to knock out the victim with a single sucker punch, police said.

The violent game has been linked to assault reports in at least six states, and three people have been killed in suspected knockout attacks.

The unidentified Brooklyn victim said he was walking home early Friday morning in the Borough Park section of Brooklyn when he was assaulted and heard his alleged attackers daring each other to punch him out minutes before one actually assaulted him, according to police.

He said there was no question that the game was the motive for the attack, New York Police Department Commissioner Ray Kelly said.

“He makes a statement that he was punched in the side of the face,” Kelly said. “He also makes a statement that just prior to it they were talking about the ‘Knockout Game’.”

New York City police arrested four men Friday in connection with the alleged sucker-punching. Only Marajh was charged, however, and the other three were released.

In response to at least eight attacks in the past few weeks, police have stepped up patrols in several Brooklyn neighborhoods where many Jewish people, the latest New York victim among them, have been the targeted.

Two weeks ago, a 78-year-old Jewish woman in Brooklyn was punched in the face by teens while walking down her street, prompting an investigation by the NYPD Hate Crimes Taskforce and leading a New York lawmaker to call for harsher penalties for so-called knockout game players.

The woman’s daughter, who wanted to remain anonymous, told “Good Morning America” that she found the violence senseless.

“Someone wanted to inflict pain onto someone else,” the woman said. “No other purpose.”

Republican state Assemblyman Jim Tedisco has proposed a bill that would classify the knockout game attacks as gang assaults, and would require that youths who participate in such attacks be tried as adults, facing prison terms of up to 25 years.

“These twisted and cowardly thugs are preying on innocent bystanders and they don’t care if the victims are young, old, a man or woman,” Tedisco told The Associated Press when he announced the bill. “Life isn’t a video game. These are real people whose lives are not only being put in jeopardy but in many cases destroyed.”

In response to the latest attack in Brooklyn, New York City Councilman David Greenfield told ABC station WABC-TV in New York that officials should send a message of “zero tolerance.”

“That’s why I called on the NYPD and District Attorney’s Office to literally throw the book at these individuals and to charge them with many crimes, including hate crimes and gang assault, because that’s what it is,” Greenfield said.

In spite of increased police crackdowns on the alleged perpetrators, the dangerous game appears to be spreading further throughout the country.

One unidentified Denver man told ABC News affiliate KMGH-TV in Denver that he was sucker-punched when leaving a bar, which would make him one of the first people in that city to be a victim of the “knockout” game.

File:Governor John Kasich.jpg

5:19 pm              November 19, 2013

Republican Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin wasted no time on Tuesday swatting away a question about whether the GOP’s 2016 presidential nominee needed to be a governor.

“No,” Ryan said quickly. “Next question.”

He did, after a few laughs, continue: “The resume is not as important to me as the person, as the quality of their ideas, as their track record of reform.”

The question, asked by The Wall Street Journal’s Paul Gigot during a public interview at the publication’s CEO Council in Washington, included mentions of three Republican governors: Chris Christie of New Jersey, Scott Walker of Wisconsin and John Kasich of Ohio.

“I would like to make sure we get a person who is a standard bearer who can go the distance,” Ryan said. “I am familiar with what going the distance means, and it means a lot. It is not easy to do.”

Ryan, his party’s nominee for vice president in 2012, said he wants someone who is going to “be strong on principles, inclusive on ideas” and someone who will show people “the full spectrum of conservatism.”

Ryan said that does not, necessarily, have to be a Republican governor.

Congress’ approval rating reached a new low last week when a Gallup poll found only 9% of Americans approve of the job Congress is doing. The rating is the lowest congressional approval rating in the 39 years Gallup has asked the question.

With an eye on 2016′s presidential race, some Republican politicians and political operatives have said nominating a Republican governor would be better than nominating a member of an unpopular Congress.

“I think it’s got to be an outsider,” said Walker, a Republican governor and someone rumored to be a possible 2016 nominee. “I think both the presidential and the vice presidential nominee should either be a former or current governor, people who have done successful things in their states, who have taken on big reforms, who are ready to move America forward.”

Likewise, the Republican Governors Association, a group dedicated to helping elect Republican state executives, have touted a video that states red-state governors “are driving America’s comeback.”

Republicans only looking to governors in 2016 would be bad news to Ryan, the chairman of the House Budget Committee and someone who has not shied away from saying he is entertaining the idea of running in 2016.

In front of the CEOs assembled by the Journal, however, Ryan said he was going to take time with his 2016 decision.

“If I am going to do a job in the majority, as the chairman of the budget committee, as a leader in my party, trying to fix these current problems, I cannot let my mind be clouded with personal ambition,” Ryan said. “I am going to make those decisions later. Right now, I have a job to do on behalf of the people who elected me.”

During the event, Ryan also weighed in on the ongoing budget negotiations between him and his Democratic counterpart in the Senate, Rep. Patty Murray of Washington.

Ryan said that he and Murray are closer to a budget deal now than they were when they started negotiations after the government shutdown earlier this year. If Murray and Ryan are unable to come to a deal, the possibility of another partial government shutdown would go up.

Ryan, however, said he was comfortable in saying there would not be another government shutdown.

“We will not have a government shutdown,” Ryan said. “We will keep the government funding at the current level if need be.”

ABC scott walker jt 131117 16x9 608 Scott Walker on the Ideal GOP 2016 Presidential Candidate: Members of Congress Need Not Apply

November 17, 2013             9:18am

During an interview with ABC’s Jonathan Karl for “This Week,” Wisconsin Republican Gov. Scott Walker — while offering praise for his GOP colleagues — dismissed Sen. Ted Cruz, Sen. Rand Paul, Sen. Marco Rubio and Rep. Paul Ryan as the ideal 2016 Republican presidential nominee.

“I think it’s got to be an outsider. I think both the presidential and the vice presidential nominee should either be a former or current governor, people who have done successful things in their states, who have taken on big reforms, who are ready to move America forward,” Walker responded when asked by Karl to describe the “ideal Republican presidential candidate in 2016.”

During the interview in Madison, Wis., Karl asked the governor specifically about Rubio, Cruz and Paul. Walker implied they were all too closely associated with the Beltway to be the ideal nominee.

“All good guys, but … it’s got to be somebody who’s viewed as being exceptionally removed from Washington,” the Wisconsin governor said.

Walker — asked by Karl about Rep. Paul Ryan — lavished praise on the 2012 GOP vice presidential candidate, but said “yes,” — according to his criteria — Paul would not be the ideal GOP 2016 presidential nominee.

“I love Paul Ryan. Paul Ryan, if he had a fan club, I’d be the president of that,” he said.

In terms of his own future, Walker — who seemed to closely fit his own definition of the ideal GOP nominee — told ABC News he would not rule out a presidential run in 2016.

“I don’t rule anything out,” Walker said.

Walker also criticized the strategy — encouraged by Cruz — that led to the government shutdown earlier this year, and said “I think so” when asked if that strategy was a mistake by Republicans.

Walker praised state-level Republicans, but criticized congressional Republicans for their ostensible refusal to compromise, which he called a “real problem.”

“Republicans, at the state level, are showing we’re much more optimistic, we’re speaking in terms that are much more relevant to where real voters are at,” he said.

File:Elizabeth Warren--Official 113th Congressional Portrait--.jpg

November 18, 2013 at 4:13 pm

If Elizabeth Warren is emerging as a kind of spokeswoman for the new economic populism that many Democratic activists want the party to embrace heading into 2014 and 2016, this speech that Warren is currently delivering on the floor of the Senate suggests the push to expand Social Security could become a key issue in the argument over the Democratic Party of the future.

In remarks Warren just began delivering, she strongly endorsed the push to boost Social Security benefits — in keeping with Senator Tom Harkin’s proposal to do the same — and condemned the “Chained CPI” that liberals fear Dems will embrace in strong terms. From the prepared remarks:

“The most recent discussion about cutting benefits has focused on something called the Chained-CPI. Supporters of the chained CPI say that it’s a more accurate way of measuring cost of living increases for seniors. That statement is simply not true. Chained CPI falls short of the actual increases in costs that seniors face, pure and simple.  Chained CPI?  It’s just a fancy way of saying cut benefits.

“The Bureau of Labor Statistics has developed a measure of the impact of inflation on seniors. It’s called the CPI-E, and, if we adopted it today, it would generally increase benefits for our retirees — not cut them.

“Social Security isn’t the answer to all of our retirement problems.  We need to find ways to tackle the financial squeeze that is crushing our families.  We need to help families start saving again.  We need to make sure that more workers have access to better pensions.  But in the meantime – so long as these problems continue to exist and so long as we are in the midst of a real and growing retirement crisis – a crisis that is shaking the foundations of what was once a vibrant and secure middle class – the absolute last thing we should be doing is talking about cutting back on Social Security.

“The absolute last thing we should do in 2013 – at the very moment that Social Security has become the principal lifeline for millions of our seniors — is allow the program to begin to be dismantled inch by inch.

“Over the past generation, working families have been hacked at, chipped, and hammered.  If we want a real middle class — a middle class that continues to serve as the backbone of our country — then we must take the retirement crisis seriously.  Seniors have worked their entire lives and have paid into the system, but right now, more people than ever are on the edge of financial disaster once they retire — and the numbers continue to get worse.

“That is why we should be talking about expanding Social Security benefits — not cutting them. Senator Harkin from Iowa, Senator Begich from Alaska, Senator Sanders from Vermont, and others have been pushing hard in that direction.  Social Security is incredibly effective, it is incredibly popular, and the calls for strengthening it are growing louder every day.”

As Noam Scheiber detailed in his big cover story on why Warren is a threat to Hillary Clinton in 2016, many of the issues that Warren has been championing for years now — Wall Street accountability and oversight of the big banks; stagnating middle class wages; the need for financial reforms designed to address the ways the economy is rigged in favor of the financial sector and against working Americans — are emerging as central to a larger argument over what the Democratic Party should stand for and who it really represents.

By planting a flag on the need to expand Social Security, Warren may have just added this issue to the pantheon of preoccupations that are driving those who want to see the party embrace a more economically populist posture going forward. Liberal bloggerssuch as Atrios and liberal groups like the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, have been pushing for a Social Security expansion, arguing that Democratic priorities should be centered on the idea that declining pensions and wages (and savings) are undermining retirement security, and that the party should above all stand against undermining the social insurance system.

The focus on Warren’s championing of these issues has led to a lot of chatter to the effect that she will run in 2016 and mount a serious challenge to Hillary Clinton in the process. But she has adamantly denied any plans to run, and at any rate, the real story here may go beyond the question of whatever presidential ambitious Warren harbors, if any. Her popularity with the Democratic grass roots suggests that they will want to see these issues addressed no matter who enters the 2016 Democratic field. Indeed, as Ned Resnikoff notes, liberal groups are pushing her issues not necessarily out of a desire to see her run, but because they want to “demonstrate the popularity of her anti-austerity, pro-financial reform message in the hopes that other Democratic politicians will begin to emulate it.”

Add the push to expand Social Security to that list. With the possibility emerging that entitlement cuts could be on the table in coming budget talks, the existence of a small progressive bloc of Senators, backed by liberal groups, pushing in the other direction could make things more complicated for Democrats, both for those who have an eye on 2016 and for those who don’t.

In a 2016 presidential matchup, Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo would lose to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on his own turf, according to a new poll of New York voters.

The Republican Garden State governor leads Cuomo 47 to 42 percent among New York voters, a Siena College survey released Monday shows. Siena College also notes that Christie fares well with Democrats who give him a 57 percent approval rating and independents with whom he has a 67 percent approval rating.

However, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who also served as a senator for New York from 2001 to 2009 and is viewed as one of the top contenders for the Democratic ticket in 2016, beats Christie 56 to 40 percent.

Clinton gets the highest approval rating overall out of all three at 67 percent among New York voters, with Christie at 63 percent and Cuomo with 61 percent approval rating among New York voters.

Christie won his own re-election for governor on Nov. 5 by more than 20 percentage points.

The poll was conducted Nov. 11-14 and surveyed 806 New York registered voters with a margin of error of + 3.5 percentage points.

A new poll finds former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie virtually tied in a potential 2016 matchup.

Christie takes 43 percent in the Quinnipiac poll, compared with 42 percent for Clinton. Christie’s strength comes in part from his strong showing among independents: He leads among the group by 16 points, 48 percent to 32 percent. He also leads among men and white voters, and comes within 12 points of Clinton among Hispanic voters — far above 2012 GOP candidate Mitt Romney’s performance with that demographic. Clinton’s strength is with women (she leads 48 percent to 39 percent) and among black voters (77 percent to 12 percent).

Clinton has big leads against other possible GOP presidential contenders. She leads both Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) by 9 points, 49 percent to 40 percent, and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) by 15 points, 51 percent to 36 percent.

The poll also found that voters are split over which party they’d prefer to vote for in their own congressional district: Democrats and Republicans each take 39 percent. That’s a big change from early last month when Quinnipiac found Democrats leading Republicans by 9 points in the generic ballot test, 43 percent to 34 percent.

Still, voters disapprove of congressional Republicans at higher rates than they do of congressional Democrats: voters disapprove of Republicans more than they approve by a 53 point margin (73 percent to 20 percent), compared with a 32 point margin (62 percent to 30 percent) for Democrats.

The poll surveyed 2,545 registered voters from Nov. 6-11, and has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.9 percent.

Women ‘held as slaves for 30 years’

Three women have been “rescued” from a south London house as police investigate claims they were held as slaves for 30 years.

Police arrested a 67-year-old man and a 67-year-old woman in Lambeth.

Last month officers were contacted by Freedom Charity after it received a call from a woman saying she had been held against her will for decades.

A Malaysian woman, 69, an Irish woman, 57, and a British woman, 30, were all rescued from the house.

The women, who are said to be “highly traumatised”, are now in safe accommodation.

Police said they were not related to each other and the 30-year-old had spent her whole life in servitude.

Det Insp Kevin Hyland, from the Metropolitan Police’s Human Trafficking Unit, said: “We have seen some cases when people have been held for ten years, but we have never seen anything of this magnitude before.”

He added that the women had controlled lives and spent most of it indoors, but they had some freedom.

Police said the facts behind the situation were being slowly established as specialist workers were assisting the women.

‘Absolutely terrified’

“We applaud the actions of Freedom Charity and are working in partnership to support these victims who appear to have been held for over 30 years,” Mr Hyland said.

“We have launched an extensive investigation to establish the facts surrounding these very serious allegations.

“A television documentary on forced marriages relating to the work of Freedom Charity was the catalyst that prompted one of the victims to call for help and led to their rescue.”

Aneeta Prem, founder of Freedom Charity, told Sky News the alleged victims were able to walk out of the house after receiving help from the charity.

She said: “We started in-depth to talks to them when they could. It had to be pre-arranged. They gave us set times when they were able to speak to us.

“It was planned that they would be able to walk out of the property. The police were on standby.”

The two people who were arrested were considered the “heads of the family”, Ms Prem said, adding that the rescued women felt they were in “massive danger” and were “absolutely terrified”.

Debbie Sterling is the founder and CEO of GoldieBlox. Growing up in a small town in Rhode Island, she never knew what engineering was until her high school math teacher suggested she pursue it as a college major. She couldn’t figure out why her math teacher thought she should be a train conductor! Nevertheless, she gave engineering a try during her freshman year at Stanford. Four years later, she graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering / Product Design. Bothered by how few women there were in her program, Debbie became obsessed with the notion of “disrupting the pink aisle” with a toy that would introduce girls to the joy of engineering at a young age.

11/19/2013                9:07 am EST

GoldieBlox, the toy company founded by engineer Debbie Sterling, has been chanting about girl power for a year now, and they are only getting louder. The Oakland-based small business is slowly, but surely, hitting the big-time. (They are currently a finalist for a Super Bowl commercial spot.)

Now, they are singing to the tune of The Beastie Boys.

The idea for this video, as GoldieBlox says on its website, was to “showcase the amazing inventive power that girls have.” So they rewrote the lyrics to “Girls.” And they got three (awesome) little girls, six engineers and Brett Doar, the brain behind the OK Go!’s Rube Goldberg machine to turn a regular house a house into a “princess machine.”

The contraption is made entirely with toys, and the new lyrics say it all:

“It’s time to change!
We deserve to see a range,
cuz all our toys look just the same,
and we would like to use our brains.
We are all more than princess maids…”

BRB, we’ll be building — and dancing — for a while.

Dilek Edwards

November 21, 2013             11:18PM

A NEW YORK yoga teacher is suing her Playboy Playmate boss for allegedly firing her because she’s ‘too cute’ to be around her husband.

In court papers filed Wednesday, yoga teacher Dilek Edwards charges she was illegally fired last month by Stephanie Adams from the Wall Street chiropractic clinic the former nude model co-owns with her husband, Charles Nicolai.

The New York Post reports that Ms Edwards’ firing came after Mr Nicolai had warned her in June that his wife “might become jealous” of the flexible young blonde because she’s “too cute,” the suit says.

And on October 30, Ms Edwards claims she got a “frantic,” 1:31am text message from Ms Adams that said, “You are NOT welcome any longer at Wall Street Chiropractic, DO NOT ever step foot in there again, and stay the F–K away from my husband and family!!!!!!!”

“And remember I warned you,” Ms Adams allegedly added.

Ms Edwards, 32, insists that her relationship with Mr Nicolai was “purely professional” and that she has no clue what sparked Ms Adams’ “absurd suspicions.”

Reached on Wednesday, however, she told The Post that Mr Nicolai had her give him yoga-therapy sessions to alleviate pain from an accident – but told her that “it had to be a secret.”

“He said if his wife hears about it, she can create some scenarios,” Ms Edwards said.

Her suit seeks unspecified damages from Ms Adams and Mr Nicolai, alleging sexual harassment, gender discrimination and unlawful termination.

Ms Adams, 43, denied her allegations and sniffed that there’s no way she’s jealous of the younger woman’s looks.

“No disrespect to anyone – but I’m a centerfold,” she said.

Ms Adams became the first openly lesbian Playmate after being featured as Miss November in 1992 and last year said, “I still identify myself as LGBT,” despite having twice gotten married to men and bearing a son with Nicolai.

She has also claimed to be a “direct descendant” of Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams.

“I can only imagine they’re rolling over in their graves because of the outrageous behaviour of their purported descendant,” said Ms Edwards’ lawyer, Maimon Kirschenbaum.

Last year, Ms Adams made headlines when she won $1.2  million from the city over her 2006 arrest for allegedly threatening to shoot a cabby – even though she was wearing skintight clothing with nowhere to hide a weapon.

Ms Adams’ lawyer, Doug Wigdor, said Ms Adams filed a complaint with cops after Ms Edwards allegedly threatened Mr Nicolai that she would kill him and his family if she got fired.

Mr Wigdor also said of Ms Edwards’ claims: “I don’t understand how any of this constitutes gender discrimination.”

Man Reunited With Motorcycle

11/20/13              03:59 PM ET EST

A Nebraska man has been reunited with his long-lost, now-vintage motorcycle nearly 50 years after it was stolen.

Donald DeVault received the 1953 Triumph Tiger 100 on Wednesday at a trucking company near the airport in Omaha.

His first reaction? To hug the man who found the bike. His next move was — naturally — to take the bike for a spin in the parking lot.

The 73-year-old DeVault learned two weeks ago that California authorities had recovered his motorcycle at the Port of Los Angeles. The bike was about to be shipped to Japan when customs agents who checked the vehicle identification number discovered it had been reported stolen in February 1967.

The bike was valued at $300 in 1967. Today, it’s worth about $9,000.

Brian Harris was hit with a stray bullet while sitting on his porch in the Northeast area of Washington, D. C., but was saved when the bullet hit his wallet and cell phone inside of his pocket.

TUESDAY NOVEMBER 19, 2013               7:33 AM

Brian Harris was hit with a stray bullet while sitting on his porch in the Northeast area of Washington, D. C., but was saved when the bullet hit his wallet and cellphone inside of his pocket.

Good thing he wasn’t using a money clip.

A Washington, D.C., man was miraculously saved from oncoming bullet by his packed wallet, authorities said.

After shots rang out Sunday night, Brian Harris, 45, told reporters he quickly checked his body to survey the damage.

“It felt like somebody hit me with their fist and I got up,” Harris told NBC Washington. “I didn’t see any blood. Then I reached in my hoodie and pulled out my wallet. (It) was shattered … and then there was the bullet.”

The shot — which was headed straight for Harris’ torso — pierced through his driver’s license, credit cards, and his cellphone.

Several cars and windows on Harris’ street were struck by the wild shots — but, incredibly, nobody was injured. Residents of Edgewood, a northeast neighborhood in D.C., said they were startled by the shooting.

Brian Harris was hit with a stray bullet while sitting on his porch. Remarkably, no one in the Edgewood neighborhood was hurt.

“It was crazy,” neighbor Brandon Gamble told WJLA Washington. “It sounded like firecrackers going off.”

Harris had to return to his employer, Catholic Charities, where he delivers food to low-income and dangerous areas, because his ID card was shattered by the bullet.

“It’s amazing, and we’re really grateful that he wasn’t harmed,” Scott Lewis, a Catholic Charities official told the Washington Post. “To think what could have happened.”

Cops believe that Harris was an innocent bystander. In fact, the bullet’s trajectory was so lucky that even police are citing divine intervention.

“I am generally not a religious man, but this guy is blessed,” said D.C. police Cmdr. Andrew Solberg, told the Post. “I want to go over and touch this man’s hand or clip off a lock of his hair. I want to rub him and feel some magic. We’re all glad that he’s here. I think somebody was watching out for him.”

An 85-year-old American veteran of the Korean War was detained in North Korea last month as he was about to depart after having visited the country on a tourist visa, his son said on Wednesday.

The veteran, Merrill Newman of Palo Alto, Calif., was taken from an Air Koryo flight on which he was to leave the country on Oct. 26, his son, Jeff Newman, the chief financial officer of a real estate company, said in a telephone interview from California.

“He was on a nine-day tour with a friend and two tour guides. He went through the normal visa process,” the younger Mr. Newman said. “Everything was going very well. They day before they were due to leave he had a meeting with his tour guide and without his companion.”

At that meeting, where at least one other North Korean aside from the tour guide was present, the Korean War was discussed, his son said. “That was the only hiccup,” he said. Mr. Newman’s traveling companion, Bob Hamrdla, who is not a Korean War veteran and lives in the same retirement village as Mr. Newman, assumed there must have been some misunderstanding from that meeting, Jeff Newman said.

There has been no word of the whereabouts of Mr. Newman, who has a heart condition and a bad back, since he was escorted from the plane, his son said.

“All we would like is for whatever misunderstanding to be put aside and, on a humanitarian basis, he be able to leave the country and come home and be with his two grandchildren,” Mr. Newman said in the interview.

The detention of Mr. Newman, who was traveling with a tour group based in Beijing, came almost a year after the arrest of another American citizen, Kenneth Bae, who remains incarcerated in North Korea.

A spokesman at the United States Embassy in Beijing, Nolan Barkhouse, said, “We are aware of reports that a U.S. citizen was detained in North Korea, but we have no additional information to share at this time.”

Mr. Newman’s detention has not been reported in the North Korean state-run news media.

In reaction to Mr. Newman’s detention, the State Department further tightened the United States travel warning to North Korea, making it clear that travel to North Korea was highly dangerous for American citizens who were likely left vulnerable to arbitrary arrest.

The updated warning, released on Tuesday, noted that “U.S. citizens crossing into North Korea, even accidentally, have been subject to arbitrary arrest and long-term detention.”

Tours of North Korea that take American tourists to the capital, Pyongyang, and a few scenic places under strictly circumscribed conditions have become more frequent. Such tour groups provide a source of hard currency for the North Korean government, and can serve to give the impression that living standards in the capital are improving.

Mr. Newman was traveling with just his friend, and they were accompanied by two tour guides, Jeff Newman said.

“He was a curious guy who had done many different things,” Mr. Newman said of his father. Among the countries his father had visited since his retirement were South Korea and Cuba, and Mr. Newman prepared for the trip for several months, taking a Korean language course, his son said.

Mr. Newman, a retired technology executive, served as an infantry officer during the Korean War, and later earned a master’s degree in education from Stanford. He lives at Channing House, a retirement community, with his wife, his son added.

Mr. Bae, 44, a Christian missionary, was arrested in the port of Rason in the northeast region of North Korea last November after leading a group of businessmen on a tour from the city of Yanji in northern China.

In May, he was sentenced to 15 years’ hard labor for committing “hostile acts” against the North. The work at the prison camp was so severe that Mr. Bae became ill and was sent to a hospital.

In October, Mr. Bae’s mother, Myunghee Bae, was permitted to visit him at a hospital in Pyongyang. She left North Korea without him.

A handout photo from Paris prosecutors of a man suspected of gun attacks in Paris

21 November 2013              04:41 ET

French authorities have named a man arrested on suspicion of carrying out recent gun attacks in Paris as Abdelhakim Dekhar.

He was taken into custody at about 18:00 GMT from a vehicle in a car park in Bois-Colombes, north-west of Paris.

Authorities said Dekhar had been jailed in 1998 for his role in a string of fatal shootings in Paris.

Last Friday a gunman threatened a Paris TV station and on Monday attacked a newspaper office and bank HQ.

Prosecutors said late on Wednesday that samples of Dekhar’s DNA matched that from the crime scenes.

They said he was not yet in a position to be questioned and the reading of his rights had been postponed.

Third man

Dekhar was arrested in a stationary car in an underground car park following a tip-off from a member of the public.

Abdelhakim Dekhar

  • Former officer in the Algerian army
  • Sentenced to four years in prison in 1998 for buying a gun used in a shooting attack by Florence Rey and Audry Maupin
  • Witnesses at the trial described him as a mentor to the couple
  • He denied involvement, claiming he had been recruited by the Algerian secret service to infiltrate the French far-left
  • He was released soon after the trial and officials believe he went abroad for several years

Police union official Christophe Crepin said: “My colleagues noticed he was not very lucid. They deduced that he had taken medicines, because of the capsules nearby.”

Some media sources have suggested he may have attempted suicide.

The BBC’s Hugh Schofield in Paris says Dekhar is believed to have been the third man in the so-called Rey-Maupin affair, named after a young couple with links to anarchist groups who bungled an attempt to steal weapons from guards and then hijacked a taxi in 1994.

In the subsequent chase and shootout, three policemen and the taxi driver were killed, as well as Audry Maupin.

Maupin’s girlfriend, Florence Rey, was released from jail a few years ago.

Their story was compared to the controversial American film, Natural Born Killers.

At his trial in 1998, Dekhar protested his innocence, claiming he had been recruited by the Algerian secret service to infiltrate the French far-left.

He was sentenced to four years in jail but released soon after the verdict, having already served his time in pre-trial detention.

Hundreds of police were involved in a huge manhunt that began on Monday, and security was stepped up at all media outlets.

An appeal for information generated almost 700 calls.

‘I will not miss’

The first incident – last Friday – was at the offices of the BFMTV television channel.

The intruder emptied the chamber of his gun in the reception area without firing, saying: “Next time, I will not miss you.”

CCTV showed that he spent only a few seconds in reception, before hurrying out.

On Monday, the suspect attacked the offices of the Liberation newspaper, firing twice and critically injuring a 23-year-old photography assistant.

Two hours later, the same man fired shots outside the headquarters of the bank Societe Generale, in the western business district of La Defense. No-one was hurt.

A car was then hijacked and the driver was forced to drop the suspect off near the Avenue des Champs Elysees, where he disappeared.

The attacks shocked French newspapers.

The publisher of Liberation, Nicolas Demorand, wrote a commentary on Tuesday promising to continue to operate.

“Opening fire in a newspaper is an attack on the lives of men and women who are only doing their jobs. And on an idea, a set of values, which we call the Republic,” he said.

The gunshot victim is said to have improved in hospital, is now conscious and no longer needs an artificial respirator.

November 22, 2012

Now that the Obama and Romney campaigns have closed their headquarters in Chicago and Boston, the attention of the political world is shifting to an office suite tucked behind the colonnades of the Biltmore Hotel complex here.

The suite is where former Gov. Jeb Bush manages his consulting business, his education foundation and, now, the (very) early decision-making process for a possible presidential run in 2016.

When former President Bill Clinton rolled through here while campaigning for President Obama, he speculated about Mr. Bush’s intentions with Ana Navarro, a Republican strategist and friend of Mr. Bush. It was no idle topic for Mr. Clinton, given the possibility that his wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton, could seek the Democratic nomination.

When Senator Marco Rubio of Florida held a strategy session here to discuss his own political future last week, the question of Mr. Bush, a mentor, hung over the room; a decision by Mr. Bush, 59, to seek the Republican nomination would almost certainly halt any plans by Mr. Rubio, 41, to do so or abruptly set off a new intraparty feud.

Mr. Bush is said by friends to be weighing financial and family considerations — between so many years in office and the recession his wealth took a dip, they said, and he has been working hard to restore it — as well as the complicated place within the Republican Party of the Bush brand. Asked this week about whether his father would run, Jeb Bush Jr. told CNN, “I certainly hope so.”

For now, however, “It’s neither a ‘no’ nor a ‘yes’ — it’s a ‘wait and see,’ ” said Al Cardenas, the chairman of the American Conservative Union and a longtime friend and adviser to Mr. Bush. “It continues to intrigue him, given how much he has to share with the country.”

After Mitt Romney’s defeat by a Democratic coalition built around overwhelming support from Hispanics and other fast-growing demographic groups, many Republicans are looking for a candidate who can help make the party more inclusive without ceding conservative principles — and no one is the subject of more speculation at this point than Mr. Bush.

To his supporters, Mr. Bush is the man for the moment. His wife, Columba, was born and raised in Mexico. He speaks Spanish and favors overhauling the immigration system in a way that would provide a route to citizenship for people already in the country illegally but otherwise law-abiding.

Mr. Bush supports school choice and stricter performance standards, pitting him against teachers’ unions but putting him in league with Republican power brokers like the Koch brothers and Rupert Murdoch. Mr. Bush’s education project, the Foundation for Excellence in Education, has support from major party donors like the Walton family and the hedge fund executive Paul E. Singer, and has attracted support from the Bloomberg and Gates foundations.

Mr. Bush opposes abortion, and he is no less an opponent of higher taxes than his brother, President George W. Bush, was in his two terms. However, he has refused to sign the antitax pledge of the conservative activist Grover Norquist, who helped lead the rebellion against his father when the elder President Bush broke his own “no new taxes” promise during his first and only term.

He could also benefit from what some Republicans see as a modest vein of Bush nostalgia, marked by a video shown at the Republican National Convention about his father, who is 88 and contending with a form of Parkinson’s disease and declining health.

Any political future for Jeb Bush depends on whether that warmer tide will be enough to offset lingering bad feelings about the family brand after the presidency of George W. Bush, who continues to be criticized by many conservatives for presiding over bailouts and expanding the size of government.

Still, calls for Jeb Bush to enter the arena in a bigger way represent vindication of a sort. His family’s longstanding advocacy for a more broad-based and “compassionate” Republican Party was largely ignored and eventually repudiated by the populist, small-government conservatives who held sway over the party after Mr. Obama’s election.

George W. Bush’s break with the populist right began midway through his second term over his support for a pathway to citizenship for some illegal immigrants, which grass-roots activists labeled an amnesty plan. His push for immigration legislation failed.

This year, even before Election Day, Jeb Bush was warning of what he called his party’s “stupid” approach to illegal immigration. (Mr. Obama took 71 percent of the Hispanic vote, according to interviews with voters.)

“The day after the election, I started getting e-mails and texts from friends and others wanting Governor Bush to run and asking whether he would,” said Justin Sayfie, a Florida lobbyist who served as an adviser to Mr. Bush when he was governor.

The calls for Mr. Bush to step forward have grown louder since Mr. Romney told donors that Mr. Obama won the election by giving “gifts” of government benefits to Hispanics, African-Americans and younger voters.

“That stupid comment that came out of Mitt Romney’s mouth would never in a million years have come out of Jeb Bush’s mouth because he doesn’t think it,” said Ms. Navarro, the strategist, who sees Mr. Bush regularly at the Biltmore, a gathering spot for local politicos. “This election result has made Jeb Bush’s voice that much wiser and that much more needed for the Republican Party: What he’s been warning about all along proved to be true.”

After waiting his turn following his brother, Mr. Bush, who declined to be interviewed for this article, is not commenting publicly on the election’s outcome. But he has assured friends that he will step forward as the nation again grapples with how to address illegal immigration. He is co-author of a book called “Immigration Wars: Forging an American Solution,” to be published in the spring.

His complicated political considerations include the question of whether the country would consider electing another Bush.

“When do you think John Quincy Adams was able to put his father’s unpopularity behind him?” Haley Barbour, the former Mississippi governor and Republican Party chairman, said during an interview last week in Las Vegas, where he was attending the annual meeting of the Republican Governors Association.

Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin, to whom Mr. Bush has given advice, said Mr. Bush’s brand is based on his record in Florida and his continuing policy work.

“The irony is the platform that he has is based more on his first name and what he did in Florida than what his last name is,” Mr. Walker said in an interview.

However, Mr. Bush’s friends say, his last name is not his biggest concern. Aside from financial matters, friends said he is also conscious of how a run would affect his family, especially the political prospects of his sons.

Jeb Bush Jr., 29, is a founder of a political action committee, Sun Pac, formed to promote and recruit conservative Hispanic political candidates.

George P. Bush, 36, has filed paperwork in Texas in preparation for a campaign to become land commissioner.

A few days after Election Day, George P. Bush was in Dallas for a fund-raising event for the Foundation for Family Literacy, a group started by his grandmother Barbara Bush.

After reading an excerpt from her novel “It’s Classified” as part of the program, Nicolle Wallace, a communications director in George W. Bush’s White House, addressed the young Bushes in attendance. After the election results, she said, “I’m counting on all of you.”

Right there, cheering with the crowd, was the family’s matriarch, the former first lady.

Care to get to know Adam "Sexiest Man Alive" Levine? Of course you do. Take a look at 50 of the star's swoon-worthy looks. You're welcome.

9:19 a.m. EST               November 20, 2013

There was plenty of teasing and taunting about this announcement, but now it’s finally official.

Adam Levine is People‘s Sexiest Man Alive.

The news hit Twitter on Tuesday evening. The hunky Maroon 5 frontman and Voice coach joins the lofty — and sexy — ranks of Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Channing Tatum, and he couldn’t be happier about the honor.

“As a musician, you have fantasies that you want to win Grammys, but I didn’t really think that this was on the table,” the singer told People for their upcoming issue. “I was just amazed and stunned and it almost seemed like they were kidding, but they weren’t, so that’s cool.”

He has abs for days (thanks to yoga and spinning, he says), a cute smile, plenty of sexy tattoos and, oh yeah, a great voice.

But, don’t get too excited, ladies — Levine is engaged to model Behati Prinsloo.

“I didn’t think marriage was for me for a long time,” the 34-year-old said in the interview. “I was ready when I was ready. That’s about as simple as it could possibly be.”

father-son-deeds

November 19, 2013

As Virginia state Sen. Creigh Deeds lay in a hospital with stab wounds apparently inflicted by his son, police investigated their relationship, which by most accounts was a particularly close one.

Gus Deeds left college to help his father’s 2009 campaign for governor, and the elder Deeds had made “herculean efforts” to help his son over the years, one of the senator’s colleagues said. On Tuesday morning, though, the pair got into some sort of altercation at Deeds’ home in rural western Virginia and the senator was stabbed multiple times in the head and chest, police said. Gus Deeds died at the home from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Authorities were still piecing together a motive and the circumstances that led up to the stabbing, but “we’re leaning towards it being an attempted murder/suicide,” Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said at an afternoon news conference. Creigh (pronounced kree) Deeds, 55, and his 24-year-old son were the only ones home at the time.

Deeds, a Democrat who rose to be gubernatorial nominee in 2009 despite his reserved demeanor and humble farmland roots, was in fair condition at a hospital.

Police recovered a gun at the home, but Geller would not provide details about it. She also would not say what the senator was stabbed with.

She said police have been able to talk with the senator, but would not reveal what he has said.

Deeds made his first bid for statewide office in 2005 when he ran for attorney general and lost to Republican Bob McDonnell by less than 400 votes. Four years later, he defeated Terry McAuliffe and Brian Moran in the Democratic primary, then squared off with McDonnell again in the general election. This time he lost badly.

During that race, Deeds’ style was somewhat unorthodox. He would listen intently to people and their worries, but rarely did he engage in lengthy conversations on the campaign trail, seemingly almost reluctant to impose on people’s time. He said then he didn’t think Virginia voters could be won by style points, drawing a contrast to McDonnell.

Gus Deeds is one of the senator’s four adult children. He studied music at the College of William and Mary, where he had been enrolled off and on since 2007, but withdrew last month, school spokesman Brian Whitson said. The college said he had a strong academic record. It did not say why he left.

During Deeds’ bid for governor, his son took off a semester to join his dad on the campaign trail.

“He needs me and I need him,” Deeds told a reporter in the fall of 2009, about campaigning with Gus.

“I’ve got to go through this campaign process but that doesn’t mean I’ve got to be completely separated from my family the whole time,” he said.

Del. David Toscano, D-Charlottesville, whose district overlaps with Deeds’, said in a statement: “Sen. Deeds was very close to his son, Gus, and has taken herculean efforts to help him over the years. Our thoughts and prayers are with Creigh and the family at this difficult time.”

At the Millboro Mercantile and Grocery Store, several miles from the Deeds home in remote, mountainous Bath County, a neighbor said he had a high regard for father and son.

“A fine neighbor. You couldn’t ask for a better neighbor,” said Joe Wood, 64, who said he had known Creigh Deeds since the late 1970s. “If something happened, he was right there.”

Aussie man missing in Nepal

NOVEMBER 20, 2013             10:22PM

AN Australian is believed to have gone missing while trekking through mountainous terrain in Nepal.

Mathew Allpress, 23, was last seen three weeks ago after he allegedly embarked on a solo journey up to Dudh Pokhari.

Matthew’s “heartbroken” mother Margaret turned to social media to try to find her son.

“This is my son Matthew Allpress. He is missing. Last known whereabouts 3/11/13 in Nepal,” one Facebook post read.

“(He) Was supposed to land in Sydney Australia on 14/11/13 but did not arrive. Please help find him.

“We all love and miss him. Thank you.”

So far more than 1600 friends have shared that post online.

Margaret, who is heading to Nepal to look for her son, added that she was “overwhelmed and overcome by the response” from family and friends.

“Your love, prayers and strength are gratefully received,” she wrote.

A spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said they were concerned for the welfare of the 23-year old Perth man.

“Australian officials in Canberra and Kathmandu are in touch with the man’s family and are providing them with consular assistance,” the spokesman said.

Daniel Clarke Bouchard comes from a family of musicians and now he's branching out to launch his own career.

November 19, 2013              2:23 PM ET

A 13-year-old boy from St-Lambert is launching his first CD today — Scènes d’enfants.

CBC’s Jeanette Kelly chatted with musician Daniel Clarke Bouchardabout his latest project.

The brown-eyed, bow-tied young man comes from a family of musicians.

He says he was inspired at the age of 7 to continue his piano lessons when he met Montreal-born jazz pianist Oliver Jones.

Now, the young musician is releasing a CD that includes duets with that very mentor.

It was a moment they had both been waiting for.

Seaman Dylan Ruffer returned home from an 11 month deployment, stepped off a plane in the airport early today and married his school sweetheart. The reception was held in the baggage area.

Travelers in Reno-Tahoe International Airport heard, “Ladies and gentleman, I present Dylan Ruffer, United States Navy,” over the loud speaker as Ruffer, 19, made his way to the top of the escalator in the arrivals terminal and descended in a hurry through a trellis of flowers and white fabric at the bottom, to give his bride, Madison Meinhardt, a long hug. Meinhardt, also 19, was resplendent in a white gown.

Ruffer, who is from Chester, Calif., had been aboard the USS Gravely for the past 11 months, much of that time off the coast of Syria. The ship returned to Norfolk, Va.,  Monday and Ruffer promptly flew from Norfolk to Chicago, from Chicago to Denver, and finally landed to the Reno Airport at 11:23 p.m. The wedding began just before midnight and ended in the early part of today.

“It’s definitely more than we could have ever asked for,.” Meinhardt, who teared up during the ceremony, told ABC News Reno affiliate KOLO. “We were expecting a wedding in the corner maybe, but this is amazing,” she said.

“I don’t think we could have imagined how beautiful the ceremony was going to be,” Brian Kulpin, spokesperson for the Reno-Tahoe Airport , told ABC News. “It was beyond our expectations.”

After the ceremony, the reception was held in baggage claim. The airport roped off a section in baggage claim, and family members and friends dined from a buffet of food donated from the airport. A DJ, a wedding photographer salon services, decorations, flowers were all donated to the couple by local businesses. Because the newlyweds were only 19, no alcohol was served.

“They didn’t have the money to put on the wedding,” Kulpin said. “Now they had a wedding they will never forget.”

Ruffer is home for six days before returning to Norfolk for duty.
