Jessie has previously told how she hopes to collaborate on some tracks of the album, saying: ‘I want to get Ed Sheeran and Tinie Tempah on there but I’d also love to work with Rihanna and Beyonce.

‘It has to happen organically, depending on who’s around.’

The 24-year-old singer also admitted she is worried about the pressure of creating a follow up to debut ‘Who You Are’, released in 2011.

She said: ‘It took me seven years to get people interested in the first album so the pressure weighs heavy on my shoulders with the anticipation of the second.’

Anna Chapman has taken off her clothes for Maxim pictures, inked her own TV show “Mysteries of the World, with Anna Chapman”, secured her own Apple iPhone app, and has become the Paris Hilton of Russian consumer product endorsements.

But now is Chapman making the move from the KGB to the Kremlin? Insiders believe so.

They contend that Chapman’s next goal could be a December bid for the Russian parliament. Chapman has launched a new website that insiders believe is the first step for her December bid for the State Duma. Chapman will reportedly run on Vladimir Putin’s United Russia party ticket.

Chapman recently told news “Before returning to Moscow in July 2010, I aspired to personal harmony and was more concerned with my own happiness.” She adds “But in due course my ideology changed. I came to understand that fulfillment in life comes from helping those around me. The day that I returned I consider to be my second birthday.”

In a recent interview, however, Chapman said she is launching instead a 3D production company. “We have the Winter Olympics and other interesting events coming up that I could cover. I’m going to launch a 3D pilot project soon.”

One of Anna’s most notable lines as a spy was the following: “Okay, tomorrow at 11, I am going to be sitting at one of the benches and she is going to ask me if she saw me in California. I am going to say no, it was the Hamptons. I will take the documents, tell her to sing. I will hold the journal, this is how she will recognize me and I got back and put the postal stamp.”

In July 2010, Anna Chapman and other spies pleaded guilty in a New York courtroom. The deal involved immediate deportation of the 10 individuals in exchange for a reported 4 foreigners held for espionage by Russia. Thereafter, she was transported via Vision Airways from LaGuardia to Vienna.

Russia’s Anna Chapman captured the media world’s attention last year when she was deported from the US, accused of being a spy. The BBC’s Moscow correspondent Steve Rosenberg investigates “Russia’s most glamorous secret agent”.

On the 35th floor of a Moscow skyscraper, an office is filling with smoke.

Suddenly I hear the click-click-click of high heels on parquet floor. And through the mist walks redhead Anna Chapman in a stunning blue dress.

She doesn’t seem in any hurry to evacuate the building.

That’s because the smoke is being pumped into the room by a machine to make her look special.

Russia’s most glamorous secret agent is here to record her weekly TV show. Judging from the scripted lines she’s speaking to camera, it’s clearly not light entertainment.

“Why are some people marked by death, and others escape it?”

Unsolved mysteries

Anna Chapman’s show is called Secrets of the World. Each week on the Russian channel Ren TV, she sets about explaining the mysteries of our planet.

“The programme’s for everyone,” Anna says in a break. “Everyone is interested in mysteries, because they are secrets, they are unsolved.”

She is less keen, however, to talk about her own secrets. I ask Anna Chapman if she really had been a spy.

“I will never deny and I will never confirm the fact,” she replies coldly.

The Americans had no such doubts on the matter.

Eight months ago, Anna Chapman was one of 10 alleged Russian sleeper agents deported from the United States.

At Vienna airport the agents were exchanged for four people the Russians claimed had been spying for the West.

It was the biggest spy swap since the Cold War. Back in Russia, Ms Chapman and her fellow deportees received medals from President Dmitry Medvedev and heaps of praise from Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

Most secret agents, once uncovered, arrested and deported, normally adopt a low profile back home. Not Anna Chapman.

Since returning to Russia, she’s hardly been out of the headlines.

Although I haven’t confirmed this fact, she is surely the first Russian spy to have done a photo shoot for a men’s magazine wearing very little and brandishing a pistol.

As well as being a model, Ms Chapman has also been an investment adviser for a bank, a charity worker and a campaigner for high-speed internet.

She’s also been elected one of the leaders of the youth wing of Mr Putin’s political party.

There are rumours she may even run for parliament this autumn. I ask Ms Chapman if that’s true.

“All I’m going to say is I’m interested in helping other people,” she replies. “That’s all.”

It’s another secret she is keeping well away from the cameras.

3D dreams

Anna Chapman rarely gives interviews, although last December a Russian TV show declared her Woman of the Year and devoted an hour of airtime to her.

In a programme resembling This is Your Life, Ms Chapman sat on a settee as a stream of figures from her past appeared on stage.

Among them, Yegor from Volgograd – her old boyfriend from school. The audience applauded as he gave her a peck on the cheek and a bunch of flowers.

One person who wasn’t there was the man Anna married when she was living in England: Alex Chapman. They divorced after four years of marriage.

Now Anna hosts her own TV show. And she’s got more plans in the world of television.

After an hour’s recording on the set of her programme, Anna Chapman is flagging.

But there is a steely side, too, to Anna Chapman, a determination not to let down her guard.

She is unlikely to reveal her own secrets any time soon.

A Navy tradition caught up with the repeal of the U.S. military’s ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ rule when two women sailors became the first to share the coveted home-coming ‘first kiss’ on the pier.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Marissa Gaeta of California, descended from the USS Oak Hill  after 80 days at sea and shared a kiss in the rain with her partner, Petty Officer 3rd Class Citlalic Snell of Los Angeles.

The crowd screamed and waved flags around the couple as they shared the short embrace, with Gaeta, 23, wearing her Navy dress uniform while Snell, 22, wore a black leather jacket and blue jeans.

‘It’s something new, that’s for sure,’ Gaeta told reporters after the kiss.

‘It’s nice to be able to be myself. It’s been a long time coming.’

For the historical significance of the kiss, there was little to differentiate it from countless others when a Navy ship pulls into its home port following a deployment.

Neither the Navy nor the couple tried to draw attention to what was happening and many onlookers waiting for their loved ones to come off the ship were busy talking among themselves.

David Bauer, the commanding officer of the USS Oak Hill, said that the crew’s reaction upon learning who was selected to have the first kiss after a raffle was positive.

‘It’s going to happen and the crew’s going to enjoy it. We’re going to move on and it won’t overshadow the great things that this crew has accomplished over the past three months,’ Bauer said.

The ship returned to Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story following an 80-day deployment to Central America.

The crew of more than 300 participated in exercises involving the militaries of Honduras, Guatemala Colombia and Panama as part of Amphibious-Southern Partnership Station 2012.

Both women are Navy fire controlmen, who maintain and operate weapons systems on ships.

They met at training school where they were roommates and have been dating for two years, which they said was difficult under ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’.

‘We did have to hide it a lot in the beginning,’ Snell said.

‘”A lot of people were not always supportive of it in the beginning, but we can finally be honest about who we are in our relationship, so I’m happy.’

Navy officials said it was the first time on record that a same-sex couple was chosen to kiss first upon a ship’s return. Sailors and their loved ones bought $1 raffle tickets for the opportunity.

Gaeta said she bought $50 of tickets, a figure that she said pales in comparison to amounts that some other sailors and their loved ones had bought.

The money was used to host a Christmas party for the children of sailors.

Snell said she believes their experience won’t be the last one for gays and lesbians in the military.

‘I think that it’s something that is going to open a lot of doors, for not just our relationship, but all the other gay and lesbian relationships that are in the military now,’ she said.

Snell is based on the USS Bainbridge, the guided missile destroyer that helped rescue cargo captain Richard Phillips from Somali pirates in 2009.

The flying public has chosen its new folk hero and it is Yukari Miyamae, a 61-year-old Colorado woman who was arrested for allegedly groping a female Transportation Security Administration agent at Phoenix’s international airport.

Miyamae is accused of grabbing the left breast of an agent at a security checkpoint last Thursday and was facing a felony count of sexual abuse. After reviewing the case, prosecutors for the county declined to file felony charges against Miyamae, according to the Associated Press.

One Facebook page titled “Yukari Miyamae Legal Defense Fund” at first described Miyamae as “the ‘Rosa Parks’ of US aviation.” It later changed its description to “Support Yukari Miyamae, wrongly accused of sexually assaulting a TSA agent.” The comparison didn’t end there, though. On the “Acquit Yukari Mihamae” Facebook page, which had nearly 2,600 likes as of press time, commenter James Kress wrote, “Yukari is a 21st Century Rosa Parks!”

If the comparison is overblown, if not offensive, it seems to reflect the widespread public anger about aggressive airport pat-downs and the frustration of fliers who don’t feel they can speak out against what they see as invasive screening methods.

Since the story broke on Saturday evening, a groundswell of public support for Miyamae has emerged online. Many of the 700-plus comments on the original msnbc.com story about the altercation were also supportive of Miyamae. The commenter Bob in Oklahoma wrote, “Why is it ‘sexual assault’ when Ms. Mihamae grabs a TSA agent’s breast, but perfectly hunky-dory when the TSA agent does the same thing to a passenger? Ms. Mihamae didn’t check the agent’s diaper, did she?” The commenter was referring to a recent episode in which the TSA checked a 94-year-old woman’s adult diaper before permitting her to fly.

The “Acquit Yukari Mihamae” Facebook page has dozens of posts, most of them supportive of Miyamae. G David Hawkins wrote, “you just did to them what they’re doing to us all. you are a hero for the people, and i stand with you!!”

Steven Slater, the JetBlue flight attendant who last year became famous when he deployed an emergency chute on a grounded plane after an altercation with a passenger, said that a reverse-groping incident was bound to happen. 

“Violence is violence and we can’t condone it,” he said. “But in my own situation, and I think it’s apt here, something created this. This was a long time coming.”

Slater, who had never experienced a pat-down until April of this year, said the episode was humiliating. “I was like, ‘Wow, you want to buy me a drink first?’ The guy was very gracious about it, but it was very, very thorough. There wasn’t much that went untouched.”

The U.S. Women’s quest for the World Cup fell short in a shootout against Japan yesterday.

For me, it was the first full women’s World Cup game that I watched. Maybe I was bad luck.

Had I have known just how much I enjoyed watching this team play, I would’ve started a long time ago. Or at least on June 26th.

What fascinated me most about how this country followed the sport this summer, was watching the twitter trends and real time updates in my facebook stream as the games were going on. It’s always interesting and surprising to see just who has tuned in to different sporting events, especially ones on a scale as big as that of the World Cup.

Part of the love for the this team extended to 22 year old forward Alex Morgan, who has stolen the hearts of millions of Americans. Don’t believe me? Just checkout her facebook page, which is littered with marriage proposals from creepy young (and probably old) guys. Brooks Peck of Dirty Tackle highlighted some of the best proposals he found prior to the final on Sunday.

Morgan, quickly became an star during the Cup with her game winning goal over France and of course, her goal in the finals inspired a young fan to flash a worldwide crowd, causing one of the most epic internet memes in recent memory.

Both Middleton sisters can add modeling to their resumes. Pippa also participated in a charity fashion show, and the photos recently surfaced.

Kate isn’t the only Middleton sister who can work a catwalk. Pippa Middleton, the royal bride’sreportedly newly single and widely worshiped little sister, followed in her sibling’s footsteps down the runway back in 2004. Recently unearthed photos of Pippa modeling with her fellow University of Edinburgh classmates for a charity runway show have surfaced this week. And once again, Kate’s claim to fame is taking a backseat to her sister.

Taken two years after Kate’s famous college catwalk (in the sheer dress that reportedly had William at ‘hello’), Pippa strutted her stuff for a university fundraiser to benefit cancer research. At age 20, the popular student wore five different designs donated by industry vets like Ted Baker and Stella McCartney. One of the looks, a blue halter dress with a butterfly embellishment, came courtesy of a fellow Edinburgh student-turned-freelance-designer, named Rowan McIntosh.

“It was quite a shock to see the dress again seven years after I last saw it,” says McIntosh, who now boasts her own dress label, Rowan Joy. “The dress was from the first collection after graduating from art college in 2003. It was made from a teal silk and a vintage sari fabric and the crystal butterfly was made from Swarovski crystals I had leftover from my [graduation project].”

Pippa, whose tanned and toned arms make a halter dress look easy, was McIntosh’s first choice as a model.  “I remember choosing Pippa to wear the dress as the color and style suited her,” she says. “She was very friendly, easy to work with and quite happy to wear what we asked her to.”

Unfortunately, memories are all McIntosh has of the dress’ debut. “I don’t have any shots of Pippa in the dress because I deleted them from my laptop a couple of months ago without realizing their significance,” says the 29-year-old.

The blue dress was later sold at the Godiva store, McIntosh’s employer at the time, most likely for a lot less than the $125,000 Kate’s sheer dress went for earlier this year.

And while she hasn’t seen any profits from her early design, the catwalk photos of Pippa have been a boon to her label. “I wouldn’t say there has been a spike in sales but there has definitely been increased interest in my label.”

Now she’s planning on doing a remake of the original in the next couple of weeks. That means Pippa could be following in her sister’s footsteps again, as a retail juggernaut.

McIntosh isn’t the only fashion professional who sees potential in Middleton’s runway stint. Michele Pryor director of Supreme Management, a New York modeling agency, thinks Pippa has what it takes to make it in the business.  “As natural as ‘walking is for most of us, it takes a great deal of confidence, attitude and skill to pull off presenting designs down a runway,” says Pryor, “and I think both Kate and Pippa did a good job despite their lack of training.  At this point, I think any agency would be happy to represent the entire Middleton family. “

It never hurts to have a plan B, even if you’re a Middleton.

The paper is suggesting that Kate wants Pippa to be her senior lady-in-waiting during the trip.

A source close to the sisters told The Star that the tour will be daunting for Kate, so she wants somebody she can trust riding shotgun.

It is a lady-in-waiting’s job to collect gifts and flowers during walkabouts, and to be up to date with all the facts on people the couple are going to meet.

 Prince William and Kate Middleton are coming to California for their first official visit on July 8. What does the royal couple have planned for the big trip?

Wherever they decide to go, one thing will remain certain: fans will follow.

“Wherever they go, it’s going to be more traffic and more security and the locals aren’t going to be thrilled with that,” said Jeff Aberbach, a government employee who lives in the Sacramento area. “But it will give people something to look at. It’s a nice way to break the summer doldrums, having a future king and queen of England visit us.”

Hundreds of people gathered in New York City’s Times Square to watch the royal wedding on a giant television screen, and even more people crammed into Ye Old King’s Head British pub in Santa Monica to watch the ceremony while enjoying a nice English breakfast. Fans also met near Cinderella’s castle in Disney World, Fla., to watch the royal exchange of vows.

Royal visits create traffic jams, and California Highway Patrol could be called on to try to help keep the roads clear.

It will be Kate’s first visit to the United States and William’s first official visit. There are still no official reports of what the couple will be doing during their three-day stay.

“No matter where they venture in California, the royal visit will create a global postcard for the Golden State,” Caroline Beteta, president of the California Travel and Tourism Commission, said.

William’s father, Prince Charles, and his wife, Camilla, although lesser celebs in the U.S., still caused quite a stir when they visited the San Francisco Bay area in 2005, mingling with Americans while visiting farmers’ markets.

William’s mother, Princess Diana, was a giant hit during her visit in the 1980s, charming people everywhere she went.

During Queen Elizabeth II‘s trip in 1983, she stopped in San Diego, Los Angeles, Palm Springs and San Francisco. During an earlier visit, she even watched movies being made at Universal Studios.

A possible destination could be Ye Olde King’s Head in Santa Monica, where the royal couple’s friend David Beckham stops by for lunch. The Liverpool native who owns the place said their visit would pull out all the stops.

“Our girls would all love to wait on Prince William,” he said. “They quite fancy him.”

Toddler Baerke van der Meij has been signed up to a Dutch football team after winning YouTube fame following a quick kickabout against his toybox.

The talented tot shot to fame after his father Jorg posted a clip on YouTube of him curling three balls into his toybox in quick succession.

It received more than 1million hits and an offer from Dutch team Venlose Voetbal Vereniging, who play in the premier Eredivisie league.

The 18-month old joined VVV’s star midfielder Ken Leemans for his first ‘trial’ session at the team’s De Koel  stadium before he was offered the symbolic  contract, which is  normally valid for ten years, after just an hour.

Baerke’s grandfather once played professionally for the club and his family remain fans.

With a little help from his father, the diminutive forward put crayon to paper and sealed the deal.

He then posed for pictures standing on the desk wearing a miniature replica shirt. Online commentators have  already compared him with national stars such as Denis Bergkamp and  Arjen Robben.

The contract was celebrated at the  stadium with a glass of orange juice, and the club said, while their potential future star’s vocabulary was still limited, one word was enough – ‘bal’.

‘The toddler’s favourite position has not yet been determined,’ the club said in a statement.

‘However, we can speak of a right-footed player with a very good kicking technique, perseverance and, importantly, football genes via his grandfather.

I’m a man, I’m 29…and I’m now scarified of an 8-year old

True story: while typing out of the title of this post, I guess I got caught between typing “scared” and “terrified” and ended up typing “scarified”. I thought about editing it, but then realized that the subject of this post is so extreme that the creation of a new word did it justice.

And what is the subject you may be thinking? It’s a 3rd grader named Stevo Poulin who I’m quite certain could whip my ass on a wrestling mat. In fact, he could probably whip your ass on a wrestling mat too.

Not that I need to tell you this, but little Stevo is the one with the mohawk and other crazy hairstyles that was tossing his opponents around the way kids his age usually are tossing around stuffed animals or Lincoln Logs. In March of 2010 he won the Brute National Championship for his age group.

According to this interview with Stevo, conducted by Scott Casber of Takedown Radio, the 8-year old had a record of 256-26 as of March 1, 2011. I love this exchange after Casber mentions his record:

Casber: You have a record of 256-26. That’s pretty substantial.

Stevo: Yes. It is.

Hey, the kid tells it like it is. Gotta admire that.

Here is another interview with Stevo where he talks about how he got his start in wrestling and what some of his goals are. For anyone who got a little worried by watching the video above that he’s some kind of wrestling cyborg, you’ll be refreshed to know that he’s, well, just a kid…as he should be.

I also enjoyed this comment from a thread tat IndianaMat.com where young Stevo was the subject:

Is this like the wrestling version of Benjamin Button where he ages backwards but keeps the wrestling knowledge he has gained through life.

It sure appears that way, doesn’t it?

Anyway, this kid clearly has the natural intensity to be great on a wrestling mat or any field of athletic battle for that matter. Let’s hope that as he grows up his body can keep up with that intensity (no reason to think it shouldn’t) and that he doesn’t get burnt out (never know). It way, way, way too soon to tell what the future has in store for Stevo Poulin, but the early returns look good. Keep it up kid. Love the heart and hustle.

Some might think that the mohawk on Stevo Poulin’s head is there to intimidate his opponents.  I would argue that this 8-year-old wrestling phenom could be wearing curling rolls and a hairnet on his head and the rest of the kids would still be frightened by his presence on the mat.

Apparently, Stevo has compiled a 256-26 lifetime record.  Just look at him manhandle the opposition, tossing the other kids around like he’s their daddy.  Kind of makes me wonder who those 26 losses came against.

Maria Aragon, 10, has become an internet sensation since uploading a video of herself performing Gaga’s new single last week. The clip has garnered more than 14 million views.
 
The footage moved the “Paparazzi” hitmaker to tears and she was so impressed with Aragon’s talents, she sent out the link to all her followers on Twitter.
 
In a post on her Twitter blog, Gaga wrote, “Can’t stop crying watching this. This is why I make music. She is the future.”
 
And Gaga has now reached out to little Aragon to perform a special duet at her forthcoming gig in Toronto, Canada next week.

If you’ve ever read your horoscope, you may be interested in what at least one astronomer has to say about it. Turns out your sign may not really be your sign.

“This is not something that happened today. This has gone on for thousands of years,” said astronomer Parke Kunkle.

The star doctors say Earth is currently in a different spot in relation to the Sun, and its equatorial alignment has changed from 3,000 years ago when the study of astrology began — back when 12 zodiac signs were assigned to 12 different periods of the year.

Those signs you were born into are different now because the Earth’s wobble on its axis has created a one-month bump in the alignment of the stars, according to Kunkle.

“Because of this change of tilt, the Earth is really over here in effect and Sun is in a different constellation than it was 3,000 years ago.”

What that means to you is a Virgo may now be a Leo, an Aquarius – a Capricorn, and a Taurus – an Aries.

“So I’m an Aries now, fabulous,” said Jozsef Szathmary, reacting to the news.

Szathmary has gone from Taurus to Aries in stride, vowing to his sun alignment that he is ready to change.

“I’m a ball of sunshine….wherever the sun is at, that’s where I’m at,” he said.

And that is just the point. The Sun and Earth are moving surely and slowly, so the stars of your sign aren’t the same as they were when that sign was assigned to your birth thousands of years ago.

For your new sign, just subtract one spot on the list.

But, don’t expect your horoscope reading to change. Scientists say this rotation has been known about since 500 B.C. and the horoscope calendar hasn’t moved.

Believe it or not, astrologers actually saw this one coming.

An astrological controversy erupted online Thursday after a newspaper article suggested that the dates that determine the Zodiac signs had shifted by about a month, throwing millions of believers into self-doubt and panic.

The tilt of the Earth’s axis has gradually shifted since the ancient times when the Babylonians determined the dates of the Zodiac. The calendrical rejiggering also supposedly re-introduced a sign discarded by the Babylonians: Ophiuchus, alternatively called the much-cooler sounding Serpentarius.

Under this calculus your correspondent, an erstwhile Aquarius, is now a Capricorn.

Twitter, predictably, exploded with outrage and irony. One user, @pnuts_mama, tweeted, “it’s our identity!! ahh!! existential crisis!! postmodernism defined!!” Time magazine’s television critic James Poniewozik joked, “I’m not a Cancer? Suddenly all those bigoted anti-Gemini pamphlets I self-published look embarrassing.”

But astrologers and astronomers — two groups that don’t always see eye-to-eye — agree that this is old news. About 3,000 years old.

“Astronomers have known about this since 130 BC. Hipparchus was able to determine that this would happen,” says Parke Kunkle, a board member of the Minnesota Planetarium Society. “It astounds me that this has taken off the way it has in the last day or two.”

The popular astrologer Susan Miller called the news “ridiculous.” In an interview with ABC News, she said, “We’ve known about this for ages. The constellations don’t suggest what’s coming up, it’s the planets! The constellations are a measuring device.”

“In ancient days there were, like, 50 constellations. Then they finally got together and agreed on 18. Then they narrowed it down,” says Miller. “I’m getting so many tweets. Trying to explain something technical in 140 characters is hard!”

Out of Alignment

In short, your astrological sign has not changed.

What has changed, subtly and very gradually, is the tilt of the earth’s axis as it revolves around the sun. If you watch a spinning toy top, explains Kunkle, you will see its axis wobble. That’s called precession. The Earth’s axis does the same thing. It’s currently facing Polaris, often called the North Star, but 3,000 years ago it was pointing at an obscure star called Thuban.

“Three thousand years ago the sun was ‘in’ whatever it was in,” says Kunkle, who is also a professor at Minneapolis Community and Technical College. “Now it’s about a whole constellation off from that.” 

In an August 2009 Pew poll, 25 percent of Americans said they believed in astrology; 71 percent said they did not. Kunkle falls into the latter category (“I’m a scientist,” he says drily.)

But, he says, “You could predict when to harvest, when to plant, by the stars. So there is some predictive nature there. Then they took it too far, using it to determine when to go to war and people’s personalities.”

Jane Zimmerman can take some solace in that. A stay-at-home mom in San Francisco, Zimmerman was just this week told by an older, wise-looking lady that she and her husband Jason had compatible signs. “I took heart,” she jokes. “I was glad.”

But Zimmerman, 37, was born on Dec. 2, meaning that her “new” sign would be Ophicius while her husband remained a Pisces.

“When it suits me, the Zodiac is great. If it’s going to tell me that I’m not a great match to Jason, then it’s a load of crap,” she says. “Unless we don’t get along any more. If there start to be cracks in our relationship, I guess I’ll know what to blame.”

Astronomers have released the largest ever colour image of the whole sky, stitched from seven million images, each made of 125 million pixels.

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey’s latest effort tops its own record, published publicly for professional astronomers and “citizen scientists” alike.

Data from Sloan has helped to identify hundreds of millions of cosmic objects.

The release was announced at the 217th annual meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Seattle, US.

Researchers have released an animation on YouTube demonstrating how the incredibly high-resolution image is represented on the celestial sphere.

Michael Blanton, a New York University physicist who presented the work on behalf of the Sloan team, told the conference that it was difficult to overstate the breadth of data Sloan provided.

“There’s something like 3,500 papers that have been written on the basis of this data set,” he said.

“A few dozen of them are being presented right now, this week at this meeting. They cover topics from the very smallest stars to the most massive black holes in the universe.”

Nearly half a billion stars and galaxies have already been discovered and described thanks to Sloan images, and the new release is sure to significantly increase that number.

Sloan data is also behind the Google Sky service, which allows users to scan the heavens in the same way as scanning their local streets, and the Galaxy Zoo project, which has allowed astronomy enthusiasts to characterise galaxies from their own computers.

Digital record

The workhorse behind the data set, a camera comprising 125 million pixels that long held the record for highest-resolution camera in the world, has been retired.

Studies will now focus on spectrometry – unpicking new data on the basis of the colours of light that the upgraded equipment.

They include:

• the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey, which will study the periodic ripples that were left behind in the early days of the Universe
• the Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration that measures the evidence of small galaxies on the edge of our Milky Way being swallowed up

• the APO Galactic Evolution Experiment, which will study red giant stars within our Galaxy to better understand the Milky Way’s overall chemical recipe

• the Multi-object APO Radial Velocity Exoplanet Large-area Survey, which will spot giant planets outside our Solar System in a bid to better model how planets form

But even the data that is already available, thanks to Tuesday’s release, will keep astronomers of both the professional and the amateur variety busy.

“You can compare it to the National Geographic Palomar Survey of the late 1950s,” Dr Blanton said.

“This is something that 50 years later is still a really important reference to astronomers; we use it ourselves to better understand our own images. SDSS is the digital version of that.”

It’s a feel-good story for the new year.

A YouTube video of Ted Williams, a homeless Columbus, Ohio, man with a golden radio voice, has gone viral over the last two days. Williams has exploded into an overnight sensation. And a possible sports announcer.

He’s been offered a job by the Cleveland Cavaliers. NFL Films reached out to the Columbus Dispatch newspaper, which profiled Williams, to hire him for voiceover work, says NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy.

NBC’s Today Show, ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live and MTV are calling for interviews with 53-year Brooklyn native. By midday Wednesday, Williams had himself an agent who was fielding an avalanche of job offers and media requests.

Sorry, Mr. Williams isn’t available, his rep said in an email . He was scheduled to board a plane for New York today at 4 p.m., where he’s booked on Today and Jimmy Kimmel.

Ted Williams holds a sign advertising his smooth radio voice near a highway ramp in Columbus, Ohio. Williams, who is homeless, became an online video sensation when the Columbus Dispatch posted a video of him speaking in his deep baritone voice on its website this week. The Cleveland Cavaliers contacted him on Wednesday, offer him an announcing job.

The video that started it all was filmed next to a Columbus freeway as Williams panhandled for money with a hand-written sign (right). In the video, he says he has a background in radio but fell on hard times due to drug and alcohol problems.

During an interview with CBS, Williams said he’s being compared to singing discovery Susan Boyle. Here’s Williams, sporting a haircut and some clean clothes, telling his story on CBS this morning. He said he’s been clean and sober for more than two years. Once he gets back to the Big Apple, he’ll look up his 92-year-old mother in Brooklyn:

With an agent, multiple job offers and a great set of pipes, what’s next for Williams? Some voiceover gigs for sure. Maybe a book deal or a movie deal. In a depressed economic environment, everybody’s looking for an uplifting story. He certainly fits the bill. Meanwhile, keep watching NFL Films. The next voiceover you hear might be his.
