Jimmy has been working with native and exotic wildlife under the supervision of Mike “Skeet” Johns at the Native Village in Hollywood, Florida on the Seminole Indian reservation for many years. Starting at the age of eleven he has been working along side and learned much from friends and Native Village alums Ian Tyson, Paul Simmons, Tre Huntoon, David Weathers, Dexter Osborn, and Richard Decoste. Jimmy met his partner and good friend Paul Bedard at the Native Village when Jimmy was a young volunteer there. Paul knowing much and Jimmy knowing little at the time, they worked side by side wrangling gator’s and catching venomous snakes. Under Skeet’s supervision Jimmy taught his younger brother Andy to wrestle gator’s at a young age. Andy often goes with the “Gatorboys” on their adventures and has become very skilled at working with animals. Growing up Jimmy’s parents George and Kim Riffle backed Jimmy on any of his decisions “Even though we know he could be hurt we still support him.”

At an early age Skeet took Jimmy under his wing and taught him about wildlife and how to live off the land. He taught him how to identify, appreciate and respect native wildlife and the land itself. Since the age of eleven Jimmy has wanted to follow in Skeet’s footsteps. The two became close friends as Jimmy moved from volunteer to manager of the Native Village by the age of 18. Skeet passed away in 2005 and left Jimmy at the Native Village to literally walk in his footsteps.

Jimmy still works at the Native Village and spends much of his time with his partner Paul exploring the Everglades and the swamps of Florida as well as new areas outside the state. Jimmy says, “The learning experience I get everyday working with wildlife and meeting new people is a blessing from God. I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.”

Paul grew up in rural southeastern New England. Starting at a young age Paul spent most of his time outdoors exploring nature. He would routinely go on long bicycle rides to find new areas to explore and new animals to interact with. He often made the almost 30 mile round trip bike ride to a place in a near by town called Rattlesnake Hill in search of Timber Rattlesnakes; catching his first at the age of 12. “I’m lucky I didn’t get killed.. I caught it with a stick and a pillow case… and then road home with it tied to my handle bars.. I probably caught 8 or 10 out there over the next 3 years.. I don’t know how I wasn’t bitten.” “I would definitely tell young kids to stay away from rattlesnakes.”

Both cycling and interacting with animals would always be a big part of Paul’s life. In his early twenties while earning a BA from the University of Massachusetts Paul became an elite level triathlete. At the age of 24, Paul became the youngest athlete (at the time) to finish a Double Iron Triathlon (4.8 mile swim, 224 mile bike and a 52.4 mile run; all done back to back without stopping). By 1998 Paul’s weekly training regiment often consisted of 5 to 10 miles of swimming; 500 to 600 miles of cycling and over 100 miles of running. In 1999 the long training helped him win the Oddessy Double Iron Triathlon.

After college Paul stayed in New England for the summer months to train and focus on triathlons, and spent the rest of the year in the south exploring the outdoors and interacting with animals. Cutting his triathlon training by almost two thirds in the off-season left Paul with time for other things like spear-fishing and diving with sharks in the Florida Keys with childhood friends Chris and Mark Rackley and their partner Manny Puig. He also learned to catch and wrestle alligators with swamp legend Mike “Skeet” Johns former owner and curator of the Native Village in Hollywood Florida. He began working with and catching Venomous snakes with Jonathan “Cattail” Vasquez and Ray Beccera in the Big Cypress Swamp. Paul began working with his partner Jimmy Riffle about 9 years ago. He met Jimmy who was working with Skeet at the Native Village. “Jimmy has become like a brother to me; I’ve seen him go from a little red-neck kid to one of the best gator, and animal handlers in the world… he is so advanced for his age. He also is smart enough to know that he doesn’t know everything, and has a great desire to learn”. Over the years Paul has worked with and around animals of all kinds including gator’s, sharks, crocodiles, venomous snakes, bears, and big cats just to name a few.

Not much has changed over the years. Paul still goes to New England for 3 months every year to see family; train, and work as a lifeguard at Horseneck Beach, just as he has for the past 17 years. He still spends most of the rest of the time in Southern Florida working with animals with his good friend and partner Jimmy Riffle. “Life is great… I wake up everyday and thank Jesus for all the amazing blessings in my life…. I am SO blessed and thankful…. everyday is a new adventure and has a new surprise… There are very few days in my life that I can recall, that I wouldn’t love to be able to live over 10 or 20 times. I’m the luckiest guy in the world… my heroes are all my best friends and my dad. People think my friends and I are these really tough guys; because we work with all these dangerous animals, put our own stitches in and because I used to run a hundred miles a week and stuff…… but they have no idea. My friends are definitely some gnarly dudes…. but if you took all of us and combined us with Rambo, Dirty Harry, The Predator and John Wayne; we would still look like a little girl scout with a tummy ache compared to my dad. He is the toughest guy I’ve even seen or even heard of… and he’s the most selfless guy I know…. he’s been working for his family since he was 11. He would dig basements under houses with a shovel and give all the money to his parents. If I end up one tenth the man he is…. I’ll be a huge over achiever.”
