The parents of a woman wanted for seducing men in bars, drugging and robbing them have spoken out about how their daughter’s life spiraled out of control after she fell under the clutches of a pimp.

Police are seeking Ryan Elkins, 23, one of ‘four foxy thieves’ who allegedly carried out a series of thefts totaling more than half a million dollars in cash, guns, luxury watches, diamonds and other possessions.

The four thieves would frequent bars and clubs in Fort Lauderdale, Florida before seducing men and robbing them, police said.

Two of the women have been arrested, while two remain at large.

Elkins’ parents, retired NYPD cop Jeff Elkins, 60, and his wife Pamela, said they are heartbroken over their daughter’s fall from a promising student with dreams of becoming a nurse.

‘We’ll never understand what happened,’ her father told the Sun Sentinel. ‘It’s a parents worst nightmare.’

The couple, who lives in Staten Island, New York, said they now only hear from Elkins, who has a young son, if she has bad news. ‘I always expect the worst,’ Jeff Elkins added.

Her son was fathered by a pimp who controls her, they said.

‘They’ve turned her into someone we don’t recognize,’ her mother said. ‘They took her away, and this is what they did to her.’

Before she met him, she dabbled in partying as a teenager and would sneak out from the house, but they assumed it was an adolescent phase.

But she met the pimp in a Manhattan nightclub around five years ago, and was won over by money and cars, her parents said.

They added that they believe she has an undiagnosed mental-health disorder.

‘She has no fear of anything,’ Jeff Elkins said. ‘She has no feelings. She’s just detached form everything, it’s just not normal.

‘We love her. We don’t understand what’s going on. We can’t figure it out. We probably never will.’

Of the four women, Johnnina Miller, 25, and Elkins are still on the loose. Subhanna Beyah, 25, and Keisha Clark, 27, were arrested last week on grand-theft charges.

Beyah, who used Crystal as one of her aliases, was arrested in the Queens area of  New York on Sunday.

Keisha Clarke turned herself into Miami Dade police on Thursday. She posted bail the following day.

Giants defensive tackle Shaun Rogers met Beyah in March at Club Liv in Miami, and then brought her back to his Fontainebleau Hotel room, according to the New York Daily News.

After waking up around 12:30pm, the safe in his room was missing more than $400,000 worth of jewelry which included diamond earrings valued at $100,000, two watches valued at $160,000 and a Cuban necklace and pendant valued at $70,000, police said.

On another occasion she met a man at an upscale restaurant and went back to his house in Pompano Beach where she made him a cocktail.

The 45-year-old woke up the following afternoon and discovered that $6,000 in cash and his collection of expensive watches – two Rolexes, one Cartier and one Panerai totaling $80,000 to $100,000 – were gone.

On April 27 Beyah worked with Elkins to con a 54-year-old they met at an unspecified club. While Beyah distracted the man, Elkins made him a drink that made him enter ‘what he described as a drug-like state’ rendering him unconscious, according to the affidavit.

When he awoke hours later, two of his Glock 9mm handguns, a Smith & Wesson .38 caliber handgun, a Rolex watch and three 3.5 carat marquise diamonds worth more than $250,000 were missing.

Another victim, Steven Kesto, described meeting Beyah and another woman at Blue Martini on Feb 20.

He took them back to his condo where the last thing he remembers was sitting on his bed with the women, being encouraged to sip a vodka cranberry they had mixed.

When he woke up he found the women were gone, along with his iPad and a $27,000 Cartier diamond and gold watch.

He also felt terrible. His heart raced, breathing was difficult and he had a headache.

Another incident involved just Miller and Clark, who tag-teamed to steal from a man they met at Blue Martini. They convinced the 54-year-old to bring them back to his place where he ‘began to feel like he was in a drugged state.

When he awoke, he was missing $300 cash, an iPhone, an iPad, an American Express card, a debit card and a $8,000 watch.

Clark used the debit card to withdraw more than $500 dollars from the man’s bank account, according to PNC bank security footage taken the next day.

Beyah’s prior record includes nearly two dozen arrests stemming from charges of prostitution, grand theft, fraud, forgery, and illegal use of credit cards. She has gone by the name Christina More, Christian Moore, Christine Brown, Christin Miller and Crystal Alex Jones.

Elkins has been arrested three times, twice for prostitution in February and November 2009 and once for larceny last September.

Clark has been arrested 14 times since June 2000, including charges of aggravated assault with a weapon, criminal mischief, larceny, fraud, burglary and battery . Miller, has been arrested six times on charges of grand theft, prostitution, fraud and marijuana possession.

Police were finally able to identify the suspects after working to compile physical evidence, surveillance videos and victim and witness interviews, according to Broward Sheriff’s Office Detective Ronald Cusumano.

‘We need to locate these women. They are dangerous. They’re giving people drugs. They could kill somebody,’ Sheriff’s spokesman Dani Moschella said last week.  told the Sun Sentinel.

Their victims were mainly men between the ages 33 and 58 and they were targeted at bars such as Vibe Ultra Lounge, YOLO, Blue Martini, Dicey Riley’s and the Elbo Room in Miami.

July 1, 2013            6:47 p.m.

The so-called hotshots were remembered as a rambunctious but respectful bunch: pranksters, sometimes, but dedicated and energetic professionals.

Their boss, Prescott Fire Chief Dan Fraijo, grew apprehensive Sunday as another official told him Prescott’s elite Granite Mountain Interagency Hotshot Crew had dug in to escape the wind-driven Yarnell Hill wildfire.

“All he said was, ‘We might have bad news. The entire hotshot crew deployed their shelters,’ ” Fraijo recalled Monday.

The worst was soon confirmed: All but one member of the 20-man crew died after being overrun by the fire, which destroyed 200 buildings in the small town of Yarnell and exceeded 8,000 acres by Monday.

The tragedy reverberated through Prescott and beyond, as portraits of the lost Prescott crew took shape and the town took its first steps toward mourning the dead.

About half a dozen people gathered on the steps of the county courthouse in downtown Prescott on Monday afternoon to pray for the fallen firefighters, for those left injured and homeless by the blaze and for those still fighting the conflagration.

They also prayed for rain.

“What we’d love to see for our firefighters and the town of Yarnell is more rain and lots of it — and preferably less wind,” said the Rev. Scott Mitchell of The Church Next Door. As the people bowed their heads and consulted their Bibles, fire trucks sped by, “Flagstaff Hot Shots” emblazoned on several vehicles.

“That’s the road to Yarnell,” said the Rev. Dave Barreras, 46, leader of the Yavapai Territorial Gospel Rescue Mission.

But Prescott had no more firefighters to send. Its only wildland team was gone.

The hotshot crew victims were all men, most in their 20s.

“It’s a younger man’s game. These people keep themselves in exceptional condition,” said Fraijo, who added, “I never heard them complain…. They always showed a great deal of respect. They always seemed to be playing pranks on each other, and a few on me.”

The deceased were Andrew Ashcraft, 29; Robert Caldwell, 23; Travis Carder, 31; Dustin Deford, 24; Christopher MacKenzie, 30; Eric Marsh, 43; Grant McKee, 21; Sean Misner, 26; Scott Norris, 28; Wade Parker, 22; John Percin, 24; Anthony Rose, 23; Jesse Steed, 36; Joe Thurston, 32; Travis Turbyfill, 27; William Warneke, 25; Clayton Whitted, 28; Kevin Woyjeck, 21; and Garret Zuppiger, 27.

At least three hailed from Southern California: Woyjeck from Seal Beach and Warneke and MacKenzie from Hemet.

The identity of the crew member who survived has not been released.

“He’s well; he had been assigned to do a function and he wasn’t with them when they had deployed to shelter,” Fraijo said. “He feels terribly, and we all feel terribly, and we have very few words that express that sort of sorry. When you take a person in your arms and hug ’em, you know, you don’t have to say too much.”

Dennis Godfrey, a spokesman with the federal Bureau of Land Management, said officials had expected that 400 firefighters would be on duty Monday, but only 280 were on the lines by afternoon.

Godfrey said officials were hoping for more but didn’t know when, or whether, they would arrive. “There are fires elsewhere,” Godfrey said. “We only have so many resources to deal with.”

Thunderheads built over Prescott on Monday, delivering thunder, lightning and heavy rain by midday. But by 3:30 p.m., none of the rain had hit the fire area.

The blaze was sparked by a lightning strike Friday, officials said.

In a sprawling gymnasium on a college campus in Prescott, cots were set up and meals were being served for those who fled the raging wildfire. Between 40 and 50 people had registered at the facility, organized by the Red Cross, and more were expected by nightfall, said Michele Maki of the Red Cross.

Shelters had also been organized in Wickenburg and Kingman.

“It’s been a very busy day for the Red Cross,” Maki said. The shelters are meant to serve not only as a place to eat or rest, she said, but also as a place to seek emotional and spiritual help from counselors and chaplains.

“For these people, it’s very personal,” Maki said.

Kathy Bryan of Williamson Valley said the members of the fire crew who perished helped save her home from the Doce blaze after it flared up June 18 in the Granite Mountain Wilderness, northwest of Prescott. That’s roughly 20 miles north of the Yarnell Hill fire.

“These hotshots were on our properties, saving them … saving my house,” Bryan said. “It’s heartbreaking.”

Bryan and her dogs fled her home before the blaze approached. Soon Bryan’s cousin called, letting her know that the wife of one of the hotshots fighting the blaze had offered Bryan a place to stay. That woman is now a widow, Bryan said.

Now Bryan believes it’s her turn to help. “I need to find out what she needs,” Bryan said she told her cousin. “What can I do for her?”

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, U.S. Army Sgt. T.J. Ashcraft said one of the dead firefighters was his younger brother Andrew, who was a good man and a good father to his four children.

“We always kind of pushed each other in good ways,” said Ashcraft, 32. “He went the firefighter route and I went the military route.”

Another dead firefighter, Anthony Rose, was expecting his first child with his fiancee, according to family friend Phyllis Barney of Glendale, Ariz.

Barney’s family met Rose in the small Arizona town of Crown King, southeast of Prescott, when Rose moved there at age 16. In Crown King, Rose earned his GED online and went to work for the local fire department.

“Just getting notifications that an entire crew is killed … is a little difficult to handle when they’re your own and whatnot,” Barney said. “But when you’ve got one that really was kind of your own … it’s even tougher.”

The firefighters’ bodies were taken to the Maricopa County medical examiner’s office in Phoenix on Monday, and it was not clear when they would be returned to Prescott. Officials were still deciding when to hold a formal memorial service.

Some of the cirumstances of the crew’s plight came into slightly sharper focus Monday, although officials cautioned that it could be a couple of days before more preliminary information was available while investigators picked through the disaster area.

Before the flames overtook the firefighters, a thunderstorm cell had moved into their location west of state Highway 89 between Yarnell and Peeples Valley, fire officials said.

The storm created strong and erratic winds in an area described as extremely rocky, with rough terrain and deep canyons. The gusts pushed the flames toward the hotshots, who were trying to create a firebreak in hopes of stopping the flames’ advance, said Wade Ward, a spokesman for the Prescott Fire Department.

As the winds shifted and fire approached, the men were probably trying to get to safety — usually a clearing, Ward said.

“It had to be a perfect storm” for them to have deployed their fire shelters — a last-ditch effort made in desperate situations, he said. Officials lost contact with the crew about 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

“Obviously wherever they deployed their shelters, they were too close to heavy fuels, so they got overrun,” said Art Morrison, a fire spokesman with the Arizona State Forestry Division.

Ward knew the men, calling them “brothers.” He described the elite team  as “very cautious” and “very conservative.”

Wade Parker, 22, of Chino Valley, about 30 miles north of Prescott, was another of the victims.

Parker’s 14-year-old cousin, Hailey McMains, viewed him as a big brother. “After church, we would find a place to sit and talk about life,” Hailey said. Wade would ask her: “’Anything we need to pray for, Hailey?’ If I was having a bad week, we’d pray about that.”

Hailey said Wade and his high school sweetheart planned to marry in October. They had been together six years, she said.

She was at the home of an aunt and uncle Sunday evening when she heard on the news that some firefighters had died. “I asked my aunt, ‘Is Wade OK?’” Hailey said.

Her aunt put her fingers to her lips and said: “Sssssshhhhhhh,” pointing to one of Wade’s young nephews.

“A little while later, as I was leaving, she whispered, ‘Wade didn’t make it, Hailey,’ ” the girl recalled. “I cried all night long.”

Julianne Pyne leads a double life.

One day, she is a teenager, a dental assistant, a daughter. The next, she is Miss Massachusetts Intercontinental, gearing up to compete for a national title.

From June 24 to 29, Pyne, 19, will travel to Houston, Texas, to vie for the Miss United States Intercontinental title, marking her first time on a national stage. Though a national title is Pyne’s dream, she said keeping pageantry and her home life separate are important to her.

“I think it was my senior year when I told my first friend in high school [about pageants],” Pyne said, who has been competing since she was a baby. “It was like my big secret, a second life kind of thing.”

Pyne, a Walpole High School graduate, said she kept her pageant involvement a secret in high school because she was shy. She was fourth runner up in the Miss Massachusetts Teen USA competition, and none of her friends knew. Now, Pyne is public about her involvement, but still separates her personal life from her title because she wants to stay down to earth and maintain some privacy.

“I think of myself when I do pageants as a professional, and a representative,” Pyne said. “When I’m home or with my friends or with my boyfriend I’m just myself. I like to fish, I love the outdoors.”

Pyne said her mom, Donna, told her to stay focused on school, keeping her grounded. When Pyne won her title, she was working toward a degree from the Massasoit Community College Dental Program.

Despite her effort, Pyne’s professional life sometimes seeps into her personal, mostly in matters of discipline.

“You have to keep your fitness up because there’s a swimsuit competition. I love brownies,” Pyne said. “There’s a lot of willpower that’s involved in training. A lot of people don’t know that behind the scenes, while you’re doing all this, you’re also practicing for interview.”

Pyne must keep up with local and international news, and practice answering interview questions that her coach, Rafa Delfin, sends her at random times. Additionally, the Walpole native speaks without any hint of an accent, something she said is important to her pageant life.

“You need to know how to speak well,” she said. “You have to think of a proper answer and you have to make it sound not polarizing, or anything. Some people have Boston accents or Texas accents, you want to sound like you can work with anybody.”

June 11, 2013

With Monday offering a night off between Game 2 and Game 3 of the 2013 NBA Finals, many NBA fans and players turned their attention to “The Doctor,” the new NBA TV documentary celebrating the life and career of Hall of Famer Julius Erving, which debuted on the network last night. In interviews promoting the film prior to its premiere, Dr. J told reporters that while he might not quite be the legendarily acrobatic high flyer he once was, he can still throw down, even after turning 63 this past February.

What’s even crazier: Erving told Sports Illustrated’s Richard Deitsch last week that he’s actually dunked three times in 2013, a full 26 years after his last NBA game. That’s even more impressive than managing to get your own filming-your-TV-screen reflection in a six-second video clip.

Sure, you’ve probably seen your fair share of family reunions at sporting events, but let’s be honest: They never get old.

And in case you needed another reason to watch this clip, we present 5-year-old Hailey Sandoval. The youngster recently threw out the first pitch at a San Antonio Missions game. Little did she know, the man wearing the catcher’s mask behind home plate was none other than her father, Army Sgt. Alvino Sandoval. Sgt. Sandoval had recently returned from a six-month tour of duty in Afghanistan.

At first Hailey doesn’t realize that it’s her dad behind home plate. But when she does, her face is priceless.

Katie Couric canceled: Report claims the talk show "Katie" may be heading for cancelation.
June 10, 2013
UNCONFIRMED: Unidentified sources report that Couric may be headed to CNN while other sources disagree

Katie Couric’s talk show “Katie” may soon be canceled before entering its third season due to some behind-the-scenes drama, according to reports by the New York Post, the Daily Mail and the Huffington Post.

“Katie” was the highest rated program of the talk shows that premiered in September 2012 and was renewed this year. Despite the show’s early success, Couric hit a wall after the unexpected departure of executive producer Jeff Zucker. Zucker, who worked with Couric on the “Today” show, is now CNN’s worldwide president.

After Zucker left there has been a high turnover in his former position and Michael Bass, another of the show’s top producers, has joined him at CNN.

Sources told the Post that the changes have created a “very stressful” situation with “staffing weirdness” and “no one making decisions.”

“Jeff’s departure left a void,” one source told the New York Post. “Then they had four co-executive producers and the staffing decisions being made were poor. Katie was left vulnerable.”

Couric to CNN?

Now, Couric may join Zucker at CNN after her ABC show wraps up, according to the Huffington Post.

“The show was oversold at syndication and hasn’t lived up to expectations,” one source said. “Everyone at ABC is gossiping that Katie will end up at CNN with Jeff [Zucker].”

However, sources told the Daily Mail that Couric will not make the move because she has a deal with ABC and she’s not the ‘distraction’ Zucker is looking for.

‘Jeff and Katie are not attached at the hip, they each have their focus on their jobs at hand,’ the source said.

The fourth in line to Sweden’s throne, Princess Madeleine, is set to marry US-British businessman Christopher O’Neill in a ceremony in Stockholm on Saturday.

The 30-year-old returned to the Swedish capital from New York, where she met Mr O’Neill two years ago.

The ceremony is not expected to be as lavish as the wedding of her sister, Crown Princess Victoria, in 2010.

Sweden’s royal family, particularly Princess Victoria, enjoys wide support among members of the public.

Before the ceremony, Swedish TV broadcast pictures of some of the 500 guests arriving at the Royal Chapel in Stockholm.

Along with the succession of European royals filing into the chapel, John Taylor of UK pop group Duran Duran was among the guests.

After the couple tie the knot, they will take part in a horse and carriage procession through the medieval old town of Gamla Stan.

‘Party princess’

Princess Madeleine, also known as the Duchess of Halsingland and Gastrikland, met Mr O’Neill in New York while she was working for a non-profit organisation, the World Childhood Foundation.

The youngest child of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia has been keeping a low profile since moving to the US in 2010 after her engagement to a Swedish lawyer came to an abrupt end.

She has also had a complicated relationship with the Swedish press, who dubbed her the “party princess” when she was spotted frequenting high-end Stockholm clubs in her early twenties.

Despite the hundreds of guests, the wedding is expected to be more low-key than her sister’s ceremony in 2010, when the whole of the Swedish capital was transformed for the celebrations.

“It won’t be anything like (Crown Princess) Victoria’s wedding. Firstly, because Madeleine is not a successor to the throne,” Roger Lundgren, the editor of a Swedish magazine about royalty told Associated Press news agency.

“Secondly, this is a private wedding – the king is paying for it himself,” he added.

The royal guest list is said to include the UK’s Earl and Countess of Wessex, Prince Edward and Sophie; Princess Takamado of Japan; and princes and princesses from Norway, Denmark, Greece, Luxembourg and Monaco.

The Royal Court said on Friday that Madeleine’s wedding dress was made by Italian designer Valentino Garavani.

Her fiance, who enjoys dual British-American citizenship, has declined a royal rank in Sweden which would have required him to become a Swedish citizen.

The couple are expected to return to the US and continue working after the wedding.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his wife Lyudmila have said their marriage is over.

The couple, who had been married for 30 years, made their divorce public on Russian state television after attending a ballet performance.

“It was a joint decision: we hardly see each other, each of us has our own life”, Mr Putin said.

Mrs Putin had rarely been seen in public in recent months, prompting much speculation in Russian media.

She is known to dislike publicity, and told the TV that flying was difficult for her.

The divorce was “civilised” and the couple would “always remain close”, she added.

Mr Putin confirmed to the TV that the two were no longer living together.

Vladimir Putin and Lyudmila Shkrebneva were married in 1983. They have two daughters, Maria and Yekaterina, both in their 20s.

“Our children have grown up; they have their own lives,” Mrs Putin added.

She and Mr Putin were last seen together at his inauguration for his third term as president on 7 May 2012.

The divorce announcement came after the couple had gone to see the ballet Esmeralda at the Kremlin Palace – they left after the first act.

The BBC’s Steve Rosenberg in Moscow says that tonight’s announcement confirms what had been rumoured for years, that the Putins were having marital problems.

But the news has still come as a shock to many Russians, who are not used to their leaders getting divorced, our correspondent adds.

Cops in South Carolina busted a 22-year-old woman for wearing a thong bikini on the beach.

Tiara Monique Garness was arrested and charged with indecent exposure because the skimpy swimsuit didn’t cover her buttocks.

Police claim they twice warned her to cover up and took action when she ignored them.

Garness, of High Point, N.C., was arrested at 5 a.m. Friday in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Arjen Robben scored in the 89th minute to give Bayern Munich a 2-1 win over German rival Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final Saturday night, ending four years of frustration for his team in Europe’s biggest tournament.

Robben ran onto Franck Ribery’s backheeled flick in the penalty area and put the ball past goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller to send Bayern to its first Champions League victory since 2001 and fifth overall. Bayern had lost two of the last three finals, including a penalty-kicks defeat to Chelsea last year in Munich.

“This means a lot. I still have not grasped it,” Robben said. “There are so many emotions.”

In a game that featured a slew of chances for both teams, Mario Mandzukic put Bayern ahead in the 60th minute at Wembley Stadium, and Ilkay Gundogan evened the score on a penalty kick eight minutes later after defender Dante fouled Marco Reus in the area.

Robben, who missed two great chances in the first half, then finally came through for Bayern to set off wild celebrations in the red-and-white end of Wembley. Robben’s overtime penalty kick was saved in last year’s final, causing some Bayern fans to turn against him. A year later, after the final whistle sounded, he strode with his arms raised toward the section of jubilant Bayern fans.

“It was very even. They had chances. We had chances,” Robben said. “Then the last minute, I was quicker to the ball. I missed two chances before that, but I stayed calm.”

Robben set up the first goal for Bayern, taking a pass from Ribery and drawing Weidenfeller out before squaring for Mandzukic, who could hardly miss from a few yards out.

But the lead didn’t last long. Dante clumsily clattered into Reus in the penalty area, and Italian referee Nicola Rizzoli pointed to the spot. Gundogan sent goalkeeper Manuel Neuer the wrong way before slotting his kick into the right side of the net.

Dortmund defender Neven Subotic became the first American to play in a Champions League final and made an outstanding sliding clearance to prevent a goal in the 72nd. The 24-year-old grew up in Salt Lake City and Bradenton, Fla., and played for the U.S. under-17 and under-20 teams before switching to the senior national team of Serbia, where he was born.

The game marked the Bayern finale for coach Jupp Heynckes, who won his second Champions League trophy after leading Real Madrid to the title in 1998. He will be replaced by former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola.

Bayern entered as the favorite, although that message didn’t seem to have filtered through to Juergen Klopp’s Dortmund team, which seemed intent on dictating play from the start. It largely succeeded for the first 25 minutes as well, although it was Bayern that ended up with the best chances of the first half.

Mandezukic came closest when his header was tipped onto the bar by Weidenfeller in the 26th, and the goalkeeper then denied Robben four minutes later when the speedy winger raced clear toward the goal.

Before that, Neuer had been by far the busier goalkeeper, making a point-blank save from Jakub Blaszczykowski and diving to stop an effort from Sven Bender. Neuer also pushed away long efforts from Reus and Robert Lewandowski before denying the Polish striker again from close range in the 35th.

Robben had the final chance of the half when he beat Mats Hummels to a long ball into the area in the 42nd, but fired his volley straight into Weidenfeller’s face.

The popular opinion around here is that Brandon Weeden is Cleveland’s quarterback for the short term and will be cast aside the minute the Browns find his replacement in a future draft. Maybe, but Weeden has a year to prove himself, and there’s one compelling reason to think he just might make it.

Norv Turner.

He’s the Browns’ offensive coordinator, but he’s more than that. He’s Brandon Weeden’s best hope of sticking around. Because when I think of Brandon Weeden I immediately think of Alex Smith and what Turner did for him in San Francisco — namely, make him a credible quarterback in his second year as a pro.Well, Brandon Weeden is in his second year, and he’s coming off a season that was more productive than Smith’s rookie turn with the 49ers. The problem is that he’s with a different head coach and a different administration, guys who didn’t draft him and who imported Jason Campbell and Brian Hoyer as competition.

So let’s just say his shelf life doesn’t appear long.

But that’s why I bring up Smith. He flat-out stunk as a rookie. Then Turner arrived, and Smith responded by producing more victories at any time in his career before Jim Harbaugh arrived in 2011. He cut down on his interceptions. He threw far more TD passes. He jacked up his completion percentage. And he nearly doubled his passer rating.

Bottom line: He became a quarterback. So if it could work for Alex Smith, it could work for Brandon Weeden, too, and that’s not lost on the quarterback as he goes through this month’s OTAs.

“He’s a guy you want on your side,” Weeden said of Turner. “He’s going to put you in the best position possible because he’s done that for years with a lot of great quarterbacks — and Alex Smith is a perfect example, with what he was able to do from Year One to Year Two.

“I’m very aware of the transformation. What he did the second year was pretty impressive, but Norv demands that. He wants you to be perfect every single play, whether you’re throwing routes (with no defenders) or throwing seven-on-seven (drills). It doesn’t matter. He demands to be perfect at all times. He puts a lot on his quarterbacks and expects us to be 100 percent all the time.”

Of course, that’s not going to happen, but I look at what Turner did with others — from Jim Everett to Troy Aikman to Trent Green to Brad Johnson and on to Smith, and think maybe, just maybe, he can do the same for Weeden.

I know, the people in power in Cleveland today didn’t choose him; they inherited him. But they didn’t draft a quarterback, either, when they could have, and they demonstrated their willingness to give Weeden every opportunity to lock down the position … by pairing him with Turner.

“He’s the best I’ve been around,” said coach Rob Chudzinski, who worked with Turner in San Diego. “The best I’ve ever seen developing quarterbacks and understanding what that position requires and what it takes to be good and great.”

Weeden doesn’t have to be great, but he does have to be good. Cleveland doesn’t go anywhere until or unless it fixes on a quarterback, and Weeden is the favorite to start this season.

But he should be. The Browns invested a lot in the guy, and he’s been on the job only one season. It’s the next two to three years I wonder about, and that’s where Turner comes in. He has a history of developing young quarterbacks, and lucky for Weeden. He might be in the right place at the right time.

“Brandon’s a young player with a lot of ability,” Turner said. “The hardest thing for him last year was that he was surrounded by a lot of young players. You had Josh (Gordon) on one side, Greg (Little) on the others and Trent Richardson in the backfield — and they’re all learning at the same time.

“What we have to do is get all those guys to grow up real fast, and Brandon’s off to a good start. But it’s a two-way deal. He’s got to fit to what we do, and we have to fit our offense to the things he does best.”

What Weeden does best is throw deep with accuracy, something he demonstrated Thursday when he lobbed a perfectly thrown bomb over defensive back Buster Skrine and into the hands of Travis Benjamin. Weeden has confidence in his arm, good pocket awareness and the ability to throw the 15-yard out. But he needs to play with more urgency, and he needs to refine his footwork, with Turner working on both at practices. And so far, so good.

“If you watch last year’s tape vs. this year he’s really speeding everything up … with pretty much everybody,” Weeden said. “He’s all about getting the ball out of your hands and not getting comfortable. Last year I was real slow and drawn out, and this year it’s bam-bam, get the ball out! That’s one thing he’s harped on.

“As far as this system goes, it fits me as well as any system in the league as far as what I’ve done in the past and the X’s and O’s part of it. I haven’t talked to Alex (Smith) about it, but I have talked to Aikman and Brad Johnson, and they love him — and I can see why. I have a ton of trust in what he does, and I’m a sponge when he talks.”

He should be. Turner is Weeden’s greatest ally, and if he’s going to make it as Cleveland’s quarterback it will be with the aid of an offensive coordinator with a proven record of straightening out quarterbacks.

“He’s awfully good at what he does,” Weeden said. “Nothing against what we did last year, but being a rookie and having young guys around you is tough. But as far as the X’s and O’s, this is a good opportunity for me to go out and put up good numbers and put our team in position to win games.”

And that’s what it’s all about.

Anthony Weiner, having forgiven himself for the sex-texting scandal that forced him out of Congress, now asks New York City voters to do the same. He has entered the mayor’s race, via an online video posted late last night – an odd time to kick off a campaign, but at least too late for the tabloids to blanket the newsstands this morning with page-one penis jokes.

The video was posted without notice or comment. A reporter at The New York Observer, Jill Colvin, spotted it after midnight, tweeted it, and after some confusion (the campaign’s new Web page was up, then down, then up again), the next leg of the campaign for the Democratic nomination was on. A wide-open race is now even more so — City Council Speaker Christine Quinn has been the front-runner, but Public Advocate Bill de Blasio and former Comptroller Bill Thompson have made significant gains in fund-raising and endorsements. Comptroller John Liu; a former City Councilman, Sal Albanese; and a Staten Island pastor, Erick Salgado, are also running. (There are Republicans, too: Joe Lhota, George McDonald and John Catsimatidis.)

“Look, I made some big mistakes, and I know I let a lot of people down,” Mr. Weiner says near the end of his video, before shifting back to why that shouldn’t matter now. (Quick recap: he sent photos of his crotch to strangers — at least six women, but how many women, how many photos and for how long, we don’t really know. When one photo accidentally went out to all of Mr. Weiner’s Twitter followers, he lied about how it happened, eventually came clean, and then resigned.)

The half-life of disgrace seems to be getting shorter. For Mr. Weiner it has been two years, almost to the day, since he quit. For Vito Lopez, who was just forced out of the New York State Assembly for serially groping young women, the period of shamed self-restraint might be, oh, two minutes. (He is threatening to run for City Council.) By comparison, Mark Sanford showed remarkable patience and restraint — he took roughly four years to go from disgraced governor of South Carolina to the United States representative for a deep-red district in that state.

Mr. Weiner has more than $5 million to spend and was last seen at 15 percent in the polls, behind Ms. Quinn but ahead of everybody else. How much of that is from notoriety and how much is sincere interest among voters who want him back on the public payroll? No one knows.

Some voters may be interested in Mr. Weiner’s journey of self-redemption and reinvention, but judging from the video and his recent actions building up to his return, we seem to be in for more of the same. He has dusted off a set of proposals for fixing the city, for saving the middle class, adding affordable housing and jobs, helping small businesses. He stresses his outer-borough roots, though he lives in Manhattan now. He has been working as a consultant and bragging to The Times about how easily he makes money. The new Anthony Weiner looks a lot like the old: full of bluster, full of ideas, full of himself.

We’ll soon see how he conducts his campaign, outside of the controlled confines of a Web video. He was invited to a Democratic candidate’s forum this morning sponsored by Crain’s New York Business, but didn’t show. As of this writing, he had not sent any tweets.

Police believe one of the men accused of kidnapping three Cleveland women and keeping them prisoners for a decade, is likely the father of a 6-year-old girl, whose mother was abducted off a Cleveland street when she was just a teenager.

A young girl, identified as the daughter of Amanda Berry, was rescued from a modest Cleveland home on Monday along with her mother and two other woman, Gina DeJesus, 27, and Michelle Knight, 32, after Berry broke free and called 911.

The little girl, named Jocelyn, ate popsicles in the hospital room in which she and her mother were examined after all four females were takes to Metro Medical Center, said Cleveland Police Deputy Chief Ed Tomba.

“She looks great, happy, healthy and ate a popsicle last night,” Tomba said of the little girl, who may have been born and raised in the very house in which her mother was a captive.

“Seeing her mother smile made her smile,” Tomba said.

FBI Special Agent Vicki Anderson told ABC News that Jocelyn is missing a front tooth and that Berry had been schooling her daughter in the home.

Police said the women knew each other in the home, and while in the hospital asked to visit one another. It was DeJesus who proudly showed off to investigators a drawing the little girl had made.

Police will soon work to determine the girl’s paternity using DNA tests, Tomba said, but given the circumstances of Berry’s imprisonment it was likely that Jocelyn’s father was one of three brothers arrested in connection to the women’s captivity.

“It’s a good possibility one of them is,” Tomba said.

Those men are Ariel Castro, 52, who owned the home on Seymour Avenue in which the women were found and his two brothers Onil Castro, 50, and Pedro Castro, 54.

Tomba said investigators were working to determine if the girl had ever left the house, but said she likely would have gone unnoticed by police who were not looking for a child.

All three women were abducted between 2002 and 2004, Berry and DeJesus were in their teens at the time of their kidnappings and Knight was 20 years old.

On Monday evening, Berry began screaming from behind the locked front door of the home where she and the other women were being held. Neighbors heard her and held kick open the door and then called police, ending what one FBI agent called the women’s “nightmare. ”

Here’s a look at the Chicago Bears‘ second-round pick, linebacker Jonathan Bostic of the University of Florida.

Bostic started 13 games for the Gators last season at middle linebacker and finished with 68 tackles, two interceptions and a forced fumble.

The Bears hosted Bostic for a pre-draft visit.

Strengths: Bostic played against elite competition in the SEC at Florida, and excelled. Bostic started in all 13 games for the Gators for two consecutive seasons, and led the team in tackles as a junior with 94 stops. At 6-1, 245 pounds, Bostic is powerfully built and plays with good leverage. Because of his loose hips, Bostic is an ideal fit in a Tampa-2 system because of his ability to turn and run in pass coverage. In coverage, Bostic possesses a good feel for zone concepts, and is lauded by scouts for his agility, which should enable him to make plays from sideline to sideline.

Weaknesses: Despite impressive measurable attributes, such as his 4.61-second time in the 40-yard dash, Bostic doesn’t always play as fast as he times. In addition, Bostic struggles to get off blocks, which shouldn’t be a major issue considering future Hall of Famer Brian Urlacher encountered some of the same problems early in his career. Bostic is also criticized for not playing as aggressively as many scouts would like. Some call him more of a finesse player than a punishing type of linebacker. Bostic isn’t a consistent player, but makes a few impact plays throughout games that catch people’s attention.

By the numbers: Bostic is 6-foot-1 and weighs 245 pounds. He ran a 4.61 at the NFL Combine, which was a faster time than that of Kansas State Wildcats linebacker Arthur Brown, who ran a 4.66. Bostic also posted a time of 4.24 seconds in the short shuttle at the combine. He wore No. 52 for his first three seasons in college before switching to No. 1 for the 2012 season.

What it means: Bostic projects as a middle linebacker, and that’s where he’ll start his career with the Bears as a backup to free-agent acquisition D.J. Williams. General manager Phil Emery considers Bostic a three-position linebacker, which means he’ll be expected to be capable of filling in at any of the spots if a starter goes down to injury. As a rookie, Bostic will likely contribute the most on special teams before eventually working his way into the starting lineup. It’s worth noting that Williams signed only a one-year deal. So the job could belong to Bostic after the 2013 season.

The ACL injury Tank Carradine suffered back in November clearly scared a host of teams away — Carradine had 11.0 sacks in 11 games last season and, at 100 percent, might be the best pass rusher in this entire draft. But the San Francisco 49ers, with an already loaded roster and double-digit draft picks, had the perfect situation to take a shot here.

The 49ers nabbed Carradine with the No. 40 pick, a terrific risk/reward proposition at that point.
San Francisco has enough defensive talent it can afford to wait on Carradine’s recovery, rather than trying to rush him back. The challenge awaiting the 49ers once he gets there will be in finding ways to use him — San Francisco runs a base 3-4 defense, while Carradine played in a 4-3 in college and projected to be a DE in the latter setup.

However, the 49ers do use some 4-3 looks and they may be able to drop Carradine in as an outside linebacker in their 3-4. (He also could try to bulk up a bit and play some 3-4 DE.) Regardless of the strategy, the 49ers will love Carradine’s ability to get into the backfield on passing downs.

Had Carradine not torn his ACL, he would have been a sure bet to be picked in Round 1. In fact, even now, one could make the argument Carradine is better suited for the jump to the NFL than his former teammate Bjoern Werner, who was selected Thursday night. Werner also landed with a team that runs the 3-4, coincidentally, in Indianapolis.

The Colts will ask Werner to provide an impact immediately. San Francisco can be more patient with Carradine, and the payoff should be worth it.

The Minnesota Vikings drafted Florida State cornerback Xavier Rhodes because, according to coach Leslie Frazier, “he’ll be a guy that will come in and help match up with some of the receivers in our division and our league as well.”

Rhodes is a solid 6-foot-1 and 210 pounds, and he brings a reputation for press coverage from the ACC. Presumably, his size will be important if and when he is matched up on the likes of Calvin JohnsonBrandon MarshallJordy Nelson and others, and at least one of them has already noticed and noted his arrival.

The Arizona Cardinals selected UNC offensive guard Jonathan Cooper with the No. 7 overall pick in the first round of the 2013 NFL draft. Cooper is rated as the No. 12 overall prospect and No. 2 offensive guard in this year’s draft class by SB Nation’s Dan Kadar.

Cooper is an excellent athlete given his 6’2, 311-pound frame. As a former star high school wrestler, he does an excellent job of using his hands to keep defenders at bay. SB Nation’s Matthew Fairburn praised Cooper’s smoothness and impeccable technique coming out of his stance, and said that Cooper may have been regarded as one of the best guard prospects in years if not for Chance Warmack’s inclusion in this year’s draft class.

Cooper could still use a bit of work as a pass protector, however. He may not yet have the bulk needed to take on bull-rushing defensive tackles when he takes a step back into a pass-protecting stance. With some time in an NFL strength program, however, Cooper has the potential to develop into a star at the next level.

Carson Palmer needs help in pass protection in Arizona. Cooper will greatly improve pass blocking for his new quarterback. He should be starting right away.

Combine results

Height: 6’2
Weight: 311 pounds
Hand size: 10-1/4 inches
Arm length: 33 inches
40-yard dash: 5.07 seconds
Vertical jump: 27 inches
Broad jump: 108 inches
20-yard shuttle: 4.84 seconds
Bench press: 35 reps of 225 pounds

Cooper started four seasons with the Tar Heels after redshirting out of high school. He went on to earn resounding acclaim from media, coaches and peers. After his 2012 senior season, Cooper earned first-team All-American honors from the Associated Press and AFCA coaches. He also earned the Jacobs Blocking Trophy as the best offensive lineman in the ACC.

The Chicago Blackhawks will have at least one piece of hardware to show from their impressive season, regardless of what happens come the playoffs.

Patrick Kane led the way with a goal and two assists as the Blackhawks captured the NHL’s Presidents’ Trophy for the first time in 22 years with a 4-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers at Rexall Place on Wednesday night.

Jonathan Toews, Patrick Sharp and Johnny Oduya also scored for the Blackhawks (35-6-5), who have gone 10-1-2 in their last 13 games to officially edge out the Pittsburgh Penguins for the top regular season record.

“To have the start to the season that we had and to keep playing consistently is an amazing thing for our team,” said Toews, referring to Chicago’s streak of earning at least a point in its first 24 games of the season.

“We’ve shown a lot of character, we’ve definitely learned from our mistakes the last few years and we’ve grown. I think everyone has matured as players in this locker room.

“We have to use that experience and use that confidence from being the No. 1 team all year and carry it into the playoffs.”

Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville said it was nice to take the regular season title, but the true test is ahead.

“The start of our year really put us in a great spot, but the consistency has been there as well. I congratulate the guys, they deserve what they got,” he said.

“Everybody had a hand in it, everybody contributed, it was a real, good team effort across the board. But I don’t think we want to get too excited, we have some serious work to do still.”

Yakupov responds

Nail Yakupov responded for the Oilers (17-22-7) who continue to drop like a rock towards another high draft pick with losses in nine of their last 10.

“The individual errors are just killing us at the moment,” said Oilers head coach Ralph Krueger. “We need to be very cognizant about the importance of reacting to this. The results are less important than the way we are playing and executing right now.

“We’re being tested right now in the severest of ways with the losing month like this. We should all expect more from each other.”

Edmonton goalie Devan Dubnyk agreed that his team has been found wanting of late.

“We need to be a group of professionals in here,” he said. “We need to understand that these games are valuable, regardless of who you are talking to or whose opinion it is. The simple fact is that they are valuable for us. It’s frustrating for every one of us in here. It’s unacceptable.”

Chicago started off the scoring four minutes into the match-up as Toews elected to shoot on a 2-on-1, cleanly beating Dubnyk with a wrist shot to the stick side for his 22nd goal of the season.

The Oilers tied the game 1-1 less than a minute later, as Yakupov collected a rebound off the boards and blasted a rocket of a slap shot that Hawks starter Ray Emery had little chance on. It was the 12th goal of the year for Yakupov, the first overall draft pick in 2012.

The Blackhawks went up 2-1 eight minutes into the opening frame as Kane fought off Justin Schultz to go in on a breakaway and put it through Dubnyk’s legs with relative ease, equalling Toews for the team lead with 22 goals.

Corey Crawford came in to the Chicago net with six minutes left in the first after Emery left with a lower body injury and did not return.

Crawford didn’t look any worse for the surprise insertion. He kept his team in the lead with a beautiful glove save eight minutes into the second as Jordan Eberle waited for a sliding defenceman to go by before lifting the puck up high on the doorstep.

The Hawks came close to adding to their lead with six minutes left in the second as a puck got through Dubnyk’s legs during a scramble and sat on the goal line before being swept to safety by Schultz.

Edmonton only had two shots in the second period.

Chicago went up 3-1 five minutes into the final frame as Oduya took a pass from Kane on the fly and picked the top corner with a quick wrist shot.

The Blackhawks got an empty-net goal from Sharp to seal it.

Despite his early exit, Emery still managed to pick up the win.

Both teams play their second-last game of the regular season on Friday as the Oilers head to Minnesota and the Hawks return home to face the Calgary Flames.

Representatives from 26 NFL teams gathered at San Jose State’s pro day on March 15, where 13 players (joined by additional prospects from small schools around the area) worked out outdoors on FieldTurf.

Ryan Otten, TE (6-foot-5 5/8, 241 pounds) — Otten — who was at the NFL Scouting Combine— ran the 40-yard dash in 4.76 and 4.69 seconds. He had a 33-inch vertical jump and a 9-foot-4 broad jump. He did the short shuttle in 4.62 seconds and the three-cone drill in 7.50 seconds. He also performed 17 lifts of 225 pounds on the bench press. Although Otten — out of respect for the teams — wouldn’t mention which NFL franchises he’s met individually with, he did say that three teams came to San Jose to work him out and he had visits with two other teams.

Rumors: Kerry Rhodes pictured with his assistant Alton Craig who he says is the guy he is carrying in the MediaTakeout pictures from a recent vacation

15:40 EST            11 April 2013

NFL star Kerry Rhodes has been forced to speak out and deny recent media reports that he is gay – after pictures allegedly of him with his arm around a ‘friend’ emerged.

The photos surfaced today on MediaTakeout of the former Cardinal’s player on a recent vacation. He is seen sitting in a boat with his arm around a man and in another, carrying the same man like a baby.

Speaking to TMZ today, Rhodes – who is now a free agent – said: ‘Photos have been circulating of my former assistant and I that have caused some rumors regarding my sexuality, and I wanted to address the situation.

‘I am not gay. The shots were taken during a past vacation in a casual environment with my entire business team.

‘I know a lot of people are recently talking about athletes struggling to come out to their fans right now, and I support them, as well as wish those individuals comfort.’

Last week Brendon Ayanbadejo, who played for last season’s champs The Baltimore Ravens and is an outspoken supporter of gay marriage, told the Baltimore Sun that four NFL players could be ready to come out soon, all at the same time.

‘We’re in talks with a handful of players who are considering it. There are up to four players being talked to right now, and they’re trying to be organized so they can come out on the same day together.

‘It would make a major splash and take the pressure off one guy. It would be a monumental day if a handful or a few guys come out.

‘Of course, there would be backlash. If they could share the backlash, it would be more positive. It’s cool. It’s exciting. We’re in talks with a few guys who are considering it.

‘The NFL and organizations are already being proactive and open if a player does it and if something negative happens. We’ll see what happens.’

A 10-year veteran, the 36-year-old Ayanbadejo played primarily on special teams with the Super Bowl champion Ravens. He had a career-high 30 tackles from scrimmage last season, a sack and 14 stops on special teams.

Ayanbadejo made the Pro Bowl in his first season with the Ravens after also making it twice while with the Chicago Bears.

The revelation follows a report last month by CBS sportswriter Mike Freeman that a player is reportedly preparing to make a public announcement about his sexual orientation before the 2013 season.

He wrote: ‘I’m told that a current gay NFL player is strongly considering coming out publicly within the next few months – and after doing so, the player would attempt to continue his career.’

Freeman did not say who the player is or any specifics about when his announcement would be made.

Openly gay former player Scott Fujita told Freeman: ‘I honestly think the players of the NFL have been ready for an openly gay player for quite some time now.

He added: ‘Trust me, the coming out of a player would create much bigger waves outside the locker room than inside.’

But on the opposite end of the spectrum are opponents and a culture of homophobia.

Last month Seattle Seahawks defensive end Chris Clemons tweeted: ‘Who on God’s earth is this person saying he’s coming out of the closet in the NFL?’

He said a player revealing that they are gay would be a ‘selfish act’ by someone ‘just trying to make themselves bigger then the team’.

Days before the Super Bowl, San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver was asked about the prospect of gay players in the locker room during a radio interview.

Culliver shot back: ‘I don’t do the gay guys man. I don’t do that.’

When asked if he believed there were any gay players on the 49ers roster, Culliver responded: ‘No, we don’t got no gay people on the team, they gotta get up out of here if they do.’

Culliver later issued a bizarre apology for his remarks, saying that the comments were a ‘reflection of thoughts in my head’ but not representative of how he feels.

A debate about gay players in the NFL was sparked anew in the Manti Te’o ‘fake girlfriend’ hoax, where the former Notre Dame football star claimed that he was the victim of a prankster who was posing as a woman and later faked her death.

It was alleged that Te’o was gay and had invented the online persona in an attempt to cover it up.

He denied he was behind the scam – as well as being gay – in an interview with talk show host Katie Couric.

At the NFL scouting combine last month, Te’o – as well as several other players – were reportedly asked about their sexual orientations.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell called such a line of questioning ‘unacceptable,’ and the New York attorney general has urged the league to investigate.

Michigan quarterback-turned-receiver Denard Robinson, Colorado tight end Nick Kasa and Michigan State running back Le’Veon Bell indicated they were asked about their sexual orientation at the combine last month in Indianapolis.

April 1, 2013            12:03 p.m.

Rachel Bilson is opening up about her relationship with her on-and-off boyfriend of six years, Hayden Christensen.

“I’m a really good girlfriend — I always put all that first in my life,” the “Hart of Dixie” actress and May cover girl tells the mag. “I’m definitely the person who would make him his favorite dinner to come home to.”

She and Christensen met on the set of their time-traveling flick “Jumper” in 2007. They announced their engagement in February 2009 but called off the nuptials in 2010, citing the pitfalls of long-distance relationships. They’ve since gotten back together, and now she’s gushing about their relationship and seems to be ready to settle down.

“I love to cook, so we make dinner at home a lot and watch movies,” the 31-year-old said. “I definitely have family on the brain. Having kids is something I want to see in my future — I hope.”

Bilson, 31, became one of America’s sweethearts playing Summer on the “The OC.” She dated costar Adam Brody from 2003 to 2006. Now she plays a similar character on theCW series named Dr. Zoe Hart, a New York transplant to the small town of Bluebell, Ala.

She’s made her fashion imprint on the show curated by costume designer Meredith Markwort-Pollack, giving rise to her own Worn on TV category, but Bilson is also considered a style icon in real life. The petite fashionista, who reportedly makes a whopping $150,000 to appear at fashion events, gave guest editor picks for Piperlime.com for some time and now designs a line of footwear for Shoe Mint.

And Christensen appears to to be supportive of his girlfriend’s sartorial selections.

“I’m lucky that my boyfriend is open-minded when it comes to fashion. There will be an outfit I’m convinced will be too crazy for him and he’s like ‘That’s awesome!'” she said, adding, “I hate being too pretty. I always add something that gives it a little funk. A leather jacket over a wedding dress — I would totally do that.”

She admitted that her style draws from the past and present, putting comfort above all, but said if she could stock up her closet with one designer it would be Chanel. She also opened up about her no-brainer beauty methods.

“My best beauty secret is really, really profound. Wash you face every night before you go to bed and I don’t wash it in the morning. Perhaps that’s my secret.”

She also talks about her red carpet regrets and guilty pleasure in the issue, which hits newsstands April 9.

Louisville players including Cortnee Walton (13) celebrate after a national semifinal against California at the Women’s Final Four of the NCAA college basketball tournament, Sunday, April 7, 2013, in New Orleans. Louisville won 64-57.

12:20 A.M.           APRIL 8, 2013

Louisville’s basketball teams have been pulling for each other during both NCAA tournaments, sweating through the nail biters, cheering the wins.

There hasn’t been a loss yet. It sure is a joyous time to be a Cardinal.

The women got a pep talk from men’s coach Rick Pitino after they lost to Notre Dame in the Big East tournament – and they haven’t lost since, beating Cal 64-57 on Sunday night to advance to the school’s second NCAA championship game.

The women’s players gathered at a New Orleans restaurant to watch the men beat Wichita State on Saturday and will be watching again Monday night when the men play Michigan for the title.

“The way I look at it, I think the men are trying to feed off of our success,” women’s coach Jeff Walz said with a smirk before adding on a serious note that he’d received word from Atlanta that the Louisville men “were in the hotel lobby, jumping up and down and cheering for us.”

Pitino texted Walz after their victory “congratulating us and telling me to tell the players what an unbelievable job they did.”

And so they have.

Connecticut women’s coach Geno Auriemma is well aware of what Louisville is going through right now.

Back in 2004, the men’s and women’s teams at UConn were playing for the national title and both came away victorious, the only time one school won both titles in the same season.

Now Louisville can do it again.

“If it were easy, it would have been done a lot of times, but the fact it’s only been done once shows you how difficult it is to do,” said Auriemma after his team routed Notre Dame 83-65 to reach the final. “At the same time, this has been a magical year for Louisville. … It’s just amazing what they’ve been able to do, so I think we’re playing against Louisville and we’re playing against a certain karma, maybe.”

Auriemma’s Huskies were finally able to shake off the Fighting Irish, thanks to an incredible effort by star freshman Breanna Stewart. She scored a career-high 29 points to go with four blocks and was seemingly everywhere.

“Given the stage, and what was at stake, I don’t know that I’ve seen any bigger performance,” said Auriemma. “I know there’s been NCAA tournament games that we’ve had certain individuals play great, but I don’t remember a player having a better game in this environment.”

UConn will be going for its eighth championship Tuesday night, which would match Tennessee for the most in the women’s college game.

April 7, 2013

In the end, it seemed less a victory than an exorcism.

A startling dominance that Notre Dame held over Connecticut crumbled Sunday night. Not even Tennessee at the height of its power could defeat the Huskies with such assured regularity.

After losing to the Fighting Irish in the past two national semifinal rounds,UConn prevailed on Sunday, 83-65, advancing to the N.C.A.A. title game against Louisville on Tuesday. The Huskies defeated the Cardinals, 72-58 during Big East conference play this season.

Notre Dame (35-2) had defeated UConn (34-4) in seven of their last eight meetings, including three times this year. But the Huskies are a more assured team now. Their freshmen, forwards Breanna Stewart and Morgan Tuck and guard Moriah Jefferson, have relaxed and matured, no longer seeming to be burdened by expectation.

The 6-foot-4 Stewart delivered a career-high 29 points on 10-of-16 shooting against Notre Dame, along with five rebounds and four blocked shots, hitting 3-pointers and runners and critical free throws. Tuck grabbed seven rebounds, and Jefferson did her part with Kelly Faris defensively to keep Skylar Diggins without a field goal in the first half and shooting a frigid 3 for 15 on the night.

After arriving at UConn as the national high school player of the year, Stewart had a brilliant opening to her college career, but then her confidence ebbed. She said she began thinking too much instead of playing freely, failing to score against Baylor, the defending national champion and shooting 1 for 7 in a defeat against Notre Dame.

But Stewart re-emerged in the N.C.A.A. tournament, and was named the most outstanding player in the Bridgeport Regional. Sunday, she played best game of her young career in the most important game of her career.

“She’s gotten stronger mentally, she’s gotten stronger emotionally,” Coach Geno Auriemma said of Stewart. “Stewie really takes things to heart and puts a lot of pressure on herself. When she wasn’t playing well, she wasn’t strong enough mentally and emotionally to put it aside.”

As the regular season ended, though, Stewart seemed to become liberated.

“There was a renewed, almost like, ‘I’m not going to settle for this anymore; I’m not going to allow myself to feel like this anymore,’ ” Auriemma said.

There have been many UConn players who have delivered big performances during the N.C.A.A. tournament, Auriemma noted, but added: “I don’t remember a player having a better game in this environment. Certainly, I’ve never had a freshman have a game like this in this environment.”

While Stewart and UConn advance to the championship game, Diggins will have the bittersweet commemoration of being an all-American, but one who did not win a national title despite three appearances in the Final Four.

Notre Dame shot only 22 for 74 over all on Sunday as if familiarity, nerves and the importance of the moment left the Irish unsettled. Guard Kayla McBride, who scored more than 20 points each of the three previous games this season against UConn, missed 15 of her 20 attempts Sunday. The Irish clanged 22 of their first 25 shots and never seemed comfortable.

“I thought we looked nervous coming out,” Notre Dame Coach Muffet McGraw said. “I don’t know why. We’ve been here before.”

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, UConn’s leading scorer on the season, who can curiously disappear for long stretches, imposed herself early and late on Sunday to finish with 16 points. UConn finally kept its poise against the Irish and successfully closed out a game after leading in the second half of all seven defeats to the Irish, dating to the 2011 national semifinals.

UConn also received some redemptive guard play from the junior Bria Hartley, who scored a career-high 29 points against Notre Dame as a freshman, but has been erratic and self-doubting much of this season. Sunday, Hartley began the game on the bench and committed six turnovers, but she also provided 15 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals and blistering speed in transition.

On Tuesday, Auriemma will seek his eighth national title, attempting to match the number won by Tennessee’s pioneering former coach Pat Summitt, whose career was cut short after last season by early-onset Alzheimer’s.

Despite its poor shooting Sunday, Notre Dame led by 26-25 late in the first half. But UConn made a 14-3 run to lead, 39-29, at intermission. Hartley hit a 3-pointer and a jumper to start the run, and Stewart contributed a 3-pointer. The Huskies took a lead they would not surrender.

In the second half, Stewart injured her right shoulder while running through a screen, and Notre Dame drew to within 61-55. But Faris grabbed two offensive rebounds and a missed free throw on the same possession, and Stewart returned to the game. Her swooping runner pulled UConn ahead by 64-55. A pair of free throws by Stewart ended the suspense at 68-55 with 4 minutes 8 seconds left.

“We just played so poorly,” McGraw said. “I thought Breanna Stewart was fantastic, unbelievable. It is real impressive to have a freshman have that type of game, to be the best player on the floor for Connecticut. You don’t expect a freshman to rise to the occasion like that. I thought it was a phenomenal performance.”

He only hoped, Auriemma said, that Stewart could summon one more performance at that level in the title game on Tuesday.

Tavi Gevinson is the pint-sized style guru who, at the age of 11, created the wildly popular blog for teenage girls, “Style Rookie.”

By age 14, she was hanging out with Chanel’s Karl Lagerfield and sitting front row next to Vogue’s editor-in-chief Anne Wintour at New York City’s Fashion Week.

Gevinson has graced magazine covers, has been the muse for the edgy Rodarte sisters’ clothing line for Target, and now, at the ripe old age of 16, she has established herself as a sort of oracle for the inner workings of the teenage psyche. She even gave a talk at a TEDx conference on it.

But at 7:30 a.m. on a Friday morning, she is just your average high school junior getting ready for school.

“I’ve gone to school with jeans and a sweatshirt on,” she said. “I have weirder outfits that I want to wear but I save them for outside of school.”

But Gevinson does lead a double life: She is a normal teenager by day and a burgeoning media mogul by night. When she launched “Rookie,” her online magazine, it received 1 million views in its first week.

“It’s weird to sit in school and be, like, I have a deadline, I have all of those emails I have to get back to, and only one person will see my homework, my teacher, but all of these other people will see my article,” she said. “That’s a weird balance to figure out.”

It all started in her slightly cluttered bedroom in suburban Oak Park, Ill., which is filled with vintage accessories and pop culture paraphernalia. Gevinson gets her Bohemian looks from her mother, who is a Swedish-born artist. Her father is a retired high-school English school teacher.

Five years ago, the then-11-year-old Gevinson borrowed her dad’s laptop and started posting photos of herself in eclectic, avant garde outfits in a signature funny, precocious voice. Those posts became “Style Rookie.”

“I was in sixth grade,” she said. “I just thought it would be fun to chronicle my interest in fashion as it was developing and changing.”

Tens of thousands of clicks later, Gevinson was the toast of Fashion Week, Teen Vogue dubbed her “the luckiest 13-year-old on the planet,” but she also drew snarky criticism by showing up to shows wearing eccentric pieces, like an enormous Stephen Jones bow that she wore to a Christian Dior fashion show.

“If you are a public person at all and you are aware of criticisms people have about you, you are sort of constantly worried about them being true,” she said.

The latest phase of her career is expanding her horizons to talking about things beyond fashion, to arts and crafts, and essays on everything from Joni Mitchell to midnight snacking, as well as more serious topics like broken hearts, eating disorders and sexuality.

“We don’t write about sex or anything for shock value,” Gevinson said. “It’s just because I think about the conversations I have with my friends or that I overhear and I think about what people feel like they are missing.”

So what makes “Style Rookie” different from, say, “Seventeen” magazine? Gevinson said her magazine doesn’t cater to what advertisers want.

gty kamala harris ll 130404 wblog Obama Calls Californian Kamala Harris Best Looking Attorney General

April 4, 2013              5:10pm

President Obama assessed the beauty of California’s attorney general Kamala Harris, calling her “the best looking attorney general,” during remarks at a fundraiser in Atherton, California.

“You have to be careful to, first of all, say she is brilliant and she is dedicated and she is tough, and she is exactly what you’d want in anybody who is administering the law, and making sure that everybody is getting a fair shake.  She also happens to be by far the best-looking attorney general in the country — Kamala Harris is here.”

“It’s true! C’mon,” he said as the crowd laughed, according to a report provided by a print reporter at the home of John Goldman, an heir to the Levi-Strauss fortune.

“And she is a great friend and has just been a great supporter for many, many years. She’s brilliant and she’s dedicated,” Obama said at a luncheon fundraiser benefiting the DNC.

Harris has served as California’s attorney general since 2011 and is a rising star for Democrats. She is often mentioned as a potential candidate for governor.

The president came under some fire back in 2008 when he referred to a female reporter as “sweetie” and told her to hold a question for a press availability.

Obama’s event in California wrapped a two day, four fundraiser sweep through the Bay Area. Earlier Thursday he talked about the need for new gun control at the home of Liz Simons and Mark Heising, director of a San Francisco investment firm and a board member at the Environmental Defense Fund

Coaches constantly talk about how players are willing to do whatever is asked of them.

Seeing how eager his star player was to meet any standard, Morgan Park coach Nick Irvin made an almost impossible request to Wayne Blackshear.

“I bet you can’t score 50 points in a game,” he said.

After nonchalantly scoring 56 against Chicago Ellison, Blackshear just said, “I told you I could do it.”

“He was like, ‘What else do you want me to do?'” Irvin recalled.

The 6-foot-5 wingman has learned at Louisville that the demands are not headline-worthy but much more challenging. While his scoring numbers are not what many had predicted, he has grown as a defensive player and is on a mission to help the Cardinals to a second consecutive Final Four.

Top-seeded Louisville faces No. 12 seed Oregon in the NCAA tournament’s Sweet 16 on Friday at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Basketball came relatively easy for the sophomore from Chicago’s West Side in high school.

Not only did he score 56 points in that game, he added 21 rebounds, nine blocked shots and seven steals.

He averaged 32.6 points, 14.6 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 3.7 steals as a senior to lead Morgan Park to the 3A sectional finals in 2011. Scout.com ranked him No. 16 nationally and third among shooting guards.

“He’s a guy, whatever the coach wants you do, he’ll do,” Irvin said.

Blackshear basically was seeing his dreams come true when he signed to play for Louisville after considering Illinois, Texas and Kentucky.

But he dislocated his left shoulder in a collision at a practice for the McDonald’s All-America game and needed surgery that sidelined him for much of his freshman year. That prompted internal questions about whether he again would dictate games so freely. He also sat out a game this season with a right shoulder sprain.

“It set me back a little last year and a little at the beginning of this year,” Blackshear said. “I’m over it. It’s in the past now. It was a difficult time and it was a big event but everything works out for the best.”

The injury was more grueling and draining than some realize.

“Fans and (media) alike, don’t understand what double shoulder surgery is all about,” coach Rick Pitino said before the Big East tournament. “It just takes time and patience. Even close friends and family members of his didn’t understand it, but they do now. You have to do it the right way or a person will lose his confidence.”

Blackshear averages eight points and 3.3 rebounds per game. But a scoring dip is expected in the transition from high school to college, especially on a team with ballhandlers and shooters like Peyton Siva and Russ Smith.

He has made strides in defense, he said, and he’s content with his development.

“I feel like I’ve improved over the season,” Blackshear said. “I feel comfortable playing a lot more defense and traps in our zone. Everyone is waiting for (me to score more), but it’s not about one person scoring. It’s about surviving and advancing to the next round right now.”

March 31, 2013

The Michigan freshman Nik Stauskas bounded into the Sheraton hotel in downtown Dallas to meet his parents and immediately declared: “I’m going to go off this game. I can feel it.”

It was Friday afternoon, before the Wolverines’ game against Kansas in the Round of 16. Despite his optimism, Stauskas, who scored 11 points, shot 1 for 4 from 3-point range, extending his slump from beyond the arc to 2 of 16 over a four-game stretch.

On Sunday morning, before Michigan played Florida in the South Region final at Cowboys Stadium, Stauskas had renewed faith. In a text message to his mother, Ruta, he wrote, “I can feel it, I’m due.”

This time, Stauskas’s prediction was as accurate as his shot. He found a comfortable spot in the left corner and shredded the Gators by making 6 of 6 3-point shots. The barrage helped the Wolverines (30-7) roll to a 79-59 victory and a berth in the Final Four.

“We have this thing, ‘Shoot it deep in the bucket,’ never leave it short, give it a chance,” Stauskas said. “I shot like I know how to shoot it, and it was going in. It was never a lack of confidence.”

Stauskas finished with 22 points and 7-of-8 shooting from the field. His only miss came with 12 minutes 27 seconds left and the Wolverines leading by 58-44. As a defender rushed toward him near the baseline, he faked a shot, dribbled and missed a 15-footer.

Other than that, Stauskas never gave the nets a break.

“I was just letting them fly,” he said.

In Michigan’s offense, Stauskas frequently stands along the baseline or deep in the corner, waiting for the ball. When point guard Trey Burke tries to turn the corner after a screen by center Mitch McGary near the top of the key, Burke can drive to the basket, pass to McGary rolling to the basket or look to the corners for Stauskas, Tim Hardaway Jr. or Glenn Robinson III.

When Florida’s defenders surrounded McGary or tried to help with Burke, the ball went to Stauskas. His first 3-pointer gave the Wolverines a 7-0 lead. The Gators could not contain Burke, so they went to a zone. Stauskas answered with back-to-back 3s late in the first half to put Michigan ahead by 41-17.

“Nik didn’t have to do anything,” Hardaway said with a chuckle. “He was just standing in the corner, and we were finding him.”

Standstill shooters can have difficulty in the Big Ten, a conference in which defenses usually force players to dribble and make decisions. It can be a chaotic existence for a shooter, especially when he faces heckling from the opposing bench.

One Big Ten coach cursed at Stauskas in the middle of a shot, his father, Paul, said. Coaches from programs outside the conference have also peppered him with verbal abuse.

Opponents try to annoy him with taunts when he sets up in the left corner. Stauskas dishes it right back. He was called for a technical foul against West Virginia.

When Stauskas was growing up in Mississauga, Ontario, he was devoted to basketball, not hockey. When his father gave the family a choice of a putting green, a pool or a basketball court in the backyard, Nik pleaded for the court. After the court was installed, Paul’s duty was to stand under the basket and return the ball when it fell through the net.

“Forty in a row one time,” Paul Stauskas said.

Nik Stauskas, who entered the starting lineup in the seventh game of the season, is averaging 11.5 points. He is shooting 45 percent from the 3-point line and 85 percent from the foul line, and he is also a skilled passer.

Stauskas enjoys playing against zone defenses, he said, but the next zone he sees will be the long, athletic web of Syracuse on Saturday in a national semifinal in Atlanta.

Florida guard Mike Rosario was too short to cover the 6-foot-6 Stauskas in the corner, and the Gators’ Erik Murphy was too slow. Syracuse is neither too short nor too slow, but Stauskas is undeterred.

“I love zone defenses,” he said. “I’m built for that.”

From the opening tip of the season, there was only one question in women’s college basketball: How do you stop Brittney Griner?

Louisville found the answer Sunday night, pulling off one of the biggest upsets in the history of the tournament.

Shoni Schimmel scored 22 points and Monique Reid hit two free throws with 2.6 seconds left to lift the fifth-seeded Cardinals over the defending national champions, 82-81, ending Griner’s incredible career.

The Cardinals made 16 three-pointers, matching the NCAA record, to pull off the victory at Oklahoma City.

“I’m just sad,” Griner said. “I didn’t do what I needed to do to get my team to the Elite Eight and just disappointment in myself.”

No. 1-seeded Baylor (34-2) had won 32 straight games and 74 of 75 behind Griner, the second-highest scoring player in NCAA history. She also holds the career records for blocks and dunks. But the 6-foot-8 star didn’t make a basket until the second half, then committed a foul with 2.6 seconds left that gave Louisville a chance to win.

Reid made those two foul shots, rescuing the Cardinals (27-8) after they squandered a 17-point lead in the last 71/2 minutes.

Hours earlier, the men’s team from Louisville beat Duke, 85-63, to reach the Final Four.

Reid and the Cardinals will play Tennessee in the Oklahoma City Regional final Tuesday for a berth in the Final Four.

Odyssey Sims scored 29 points, including two free throws with 9.1 seconds to go that put Baylor ahead 81-80.

When played to perfection, there’s nothing quite like Syracuse’s aggressive, half-court 2-3 zone defense.

It’s 40 minutes of trapping and shot-challenging, of closing off angles, of trusting teammates.

“We showed,” senior guard Brandan Triche said, “that defense wins games.”

Yes, the Orange D certainly does.

With a second suffocating performance at the East Regional, No. 4-seeded Syracuse shut down No. 3 Marquette 55-39 Saturday to earn coach Jim Boeheim his fourth trip to the Final Four — and first since a freshman named Carmelo Anthony helped win the 2003 NCAA championship.

“A tremendous, tremendous defensive effort,” Boeheim said.

Fittingly, a matchup between schools from the soon-to-break-apart, rough-and-tumble Big East became quite a struggle on the offensive end. Syracuse (30-9) was led by senior forward James Southerland’s 16 points. Michael Carter-Williams, a 6-foot-6 guard who is out front in the zone, was named the regional’s top player after accounting for 12 points, eight rebounds, six assists, five steals and only one turnover Saturday.

Marquette (26-9) hadn’t scored fewer than 47 points all season — and, indeed, put up 74 in a victory over Syracuse on Feb. 25. But this time, Marquette kept turning the ball over, seeing its shots blocked or just plain missing.

The Golden Eagles’ 39 points were a record low for a team in an NCAA tournament regional final since the shot clock was introduced in 1986.

“They beat us from start to finish. We collectively tried everything we knew to try,” Marquette coach Buzz Williams said. “It is the zone, and it is the players in the zone.”

Much like what happened Thursday in the regional semifinals, when Syracuse knocked off top-seeded Indiana by limiting it to a season-low output, too.

“I don’t think we’ve played as good defensively as these last two games,” Triche said. “We held some good teams down.”

All told, Marquette made only 12 of 53 shots — 23 percent — and was 3 for 24 on 3-pointers. Vander Blue, who carried Marquette to the round of eight, was held to 14 points on 3-for-15 shooting.

“They cover ground really good. You’ve got to get the ball in the middle, you’ve got to play inside out, you’ve got to get to the free-throw line and wear them down with the 3-pointer when you can,” Blue said. “They’re really good at what they do in that zone.”

Consider these numbers through four games in the tournament: Syracuse is averaging 6.5 blocks and 10.8 steals, while forcing opponents into 29 percent shooting, including 15 percent on 3-pointers.

“We couldn’t get one to drop in from up close,” said Marquette’s Jamil Wilson, who was 0 for 5 on 3-pointers, 1 for 9 overall. “We couldn’t get one to drop in from outside.”

The next team to try to solve that defense will be the winner of Sunday’s South Regional final between Florida and Michigan. Syracuse is 3-0 in national semifinal games under Boeheim.

And to think: Exactly three weeks ago, in this very same building, Syracuse wrapped up its final Big East regular-season schedule before heading to the Atlantic Coast Conference with a bad-as-can-be performance in a lopsided loss to Georgetown. Syracuse’s 39 points that day were the Orange’s tiniest total in a half-century.

That was Syracuse’s fourth loss in a span of five games, a stumbling way to head into tournament play.

Martin Brodeur scored his third career goal and made 17 saves in his first game in a month, leading the Devils to a 4-1 victory over the host Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night. Brodeur had been out since Feb. 21 with a pinched nerve in his upper back and neck. The Devils went 3-8-2 in his absence.

Brodeur got credit for the game’s first goal when Carolina’s Jordan Staal passed the puck to the point from behind the net after a delayed penalty call against the Devils’ Marek Zidlicky. The puck missed the intended target, bounced off the boards near center ice and slid into the net.

The La Salle Explorers took advantage of their Kansas City karma and reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

Guard Tyrone Garland’s basket on a drive through the lane with 2.5 seconds left gave the 13th-seeded Explorers a 76-74 victory over No. 12 Mississippi on Sunday night at the Sprint Center.

The Explorers, who have won three NCAA Tournament games in five nights in two time zones, advanced to the Sweet 16, where they will face No. 9 Wichita State on Thursday in Los Angeles.

It’s the farthest La Salle has advanced since 1955 when LaSalle, as defending NCAA champion, reached the title game of a 24-team tournament and lost to Bill Russell’s University of San Francisco team.

Ramon Galloway led the Explorers, 24-9, with 24 points and Garland scored 21.

Marshall Henderson led Ole Miss, 27-9, with 21 points.

Reginald Buckner’s put-back gave the Rebels a 73-72 lead with 2:43, but he missed the free throw that followed — the Rebels’ 10th miss in 19 attempts. LaDarius White then made one of two free throws, making it 74-72 with 1:58 to play.

La Salle’s Tyreek Duren tied it 74-74 by making both ends of a one-and-one with 1:07 to play. White missed the basket with a jumper with 44 seconds to play, but in the ensuing scramble, the Rebels were awarded the ball out of bounds with 12 seconds left on the shot clock.

But Henderson was unable to get off a shot in time, and La Salle took over on the shot-clock violation with 32 seconds to play.

Ole Miss point guard Jarvis Summers gave the Rebels a 71-69 with a basket with 3:25 to play in the game, but Duren answered with a three-point shot for a 72-71 lead.

La Salle tied the game at 69-69 on a five-point possession. Sam Mills made a three-pointer and was fouled with 4:01 to play. He missed the free throw, but Jerrell Wright grabbed the rebound and scored on the put-back.

Henderson gave the Rebels a 65-62 lead with a traditional three-point play when he was fouled making a jump shot and converted the free throw with 6:39 to play.

Duren answered with a basket, and the Explorers had a chance to take the lead but Ole Miss’ Reginald Buckner blocked the shot, and the Rebels’ Nick Williams scored at the other end for a 67-64 lead with 4:57 to play.

Ole Miss trailed 55-52 when forward Murphy Holloway put together a four-point play with 10:44 left to play. Holloway scored an inside basket and was fouled. He missed the free throw but gathered the rebound in the lane and scored for a 56-55 lead.

After an Explorers’ turnover, Henderson drained a three-point shot, extending the lead to 59-55 with 9:49 to play.

La Salle led 40-38 at halftime as Galloway made five of eight three-point attempts and had 19 points, while Henderson got off to a slow start for the second straight game. Henderson made just three of nine from beyond the arc in the first half, and had 11 points.

Florida Gulf Coast doesn’t have any high school All-Americans on its squad. It doesn’t have an experienced head coach, and with only one senior starter, there isn’t a wealth of experience on the roster either.

What the team does have is a berth in the Sweet 16 and a place in NCAA Tournament history.

Florida Gulf Coast became the first No. 15 seed to advance past the first weekend of March Madness, using a 17-0 second-half run to blow past San Diego State in a 81-71 win at the Wells Fargo Center on Sunday.

The Eagles (26-10) will play third-seeded Florida in the South Regional semifinals in Arlington, Texas.

After an entertaining first 30 minutes that saw 10 ties and nine lead changes, Florida Gulf Coast produced a run that nobody in the building saw coming — except maybe the Eagles’ bench.

Seventh-seeded San Diego State (23-11) pulled within two points on a Xavier Thames bucket with 11:33 remaining, but the Aztecs went the next 7:33 without putting the ball through the bucket as the Eagles took control.

How Florida Gulf Coast managed to fly under the national radar for so long is a bit of a mystery. A win over Miami (Fla.) in the second game of the season showed that the Eagles were capable of playing with the best teams in the country, though winning two games in March is much different than winning one in November.

The Eagles were paced by sophomore guard Bernard Thompson’s 23 points. Sherwood Brown added 17 points and eight rebounds, and three other Florida Gulf Coast players scored in double figures.

Eagles point guard Brett Comer is establishing himself as one of the nation’s top floor generals. The 6-foot-3 sophomore followed up a 10-assist, two-turnover performance against Georgetown on Friday with a 10-point, 14-assist, three-turnover effort against one of the toughest defenses in the country.

The Eagles became only the second team all season to score 80 points against the Aztecs, joining UNLV, which had 85 points back on Jan. 16.

Comer isn’t the only Eagle who’s earned himself a reputation this weekend. Chase Fieler, a 6-8 junior forward, has had a number of highlight-reel dunks that have earned the program the moniker “Dunk City” on social media. Fieler finished with 11 points, the same total as sophomore guard Christophe Varidel.

Jamaal Franklin, San Diego State’s do-everything junior guard, finished with 20 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and four steals. Chase Tapley added 17 points, James Rahon 12 and DeShawn Stephens 10 for the Aztecs.

Florida Gulf Coast’s advancement was one of the big early storylines of the tournament, as the Eagles knocked off second-seeded Georgetown on Friday in just their second year as a full Division I member. Now the Eagles are sure to be one of the biggest stories of the year, no matter how much further coach Andy Enfield’s squad can go.

The Fort Myers school moved up from Division II to the Atlantic Sun Conference back in 2007, then went through a four-year transition period before gaining postseason eligibility.

The schools played an entertaining first half of basketball at the Wells Fargo Center, as San Diego State took a 35-34 lead into the half.

In a first half with five ties and four lead changes, neither team held an advantage larger than the six-point lead SDSU had with 2:20 remaining break intermission.

No one-and-done for Temple on this day. Their best player pulled it off with six clinching free throws that were oh-so-painful but still perfect.

Khalif Wyatt scored 31 points, finishing the game with an injured left thumb that had him grimacing before his decisive free throws, and Temple broke with its trend of opening game losses in the NCAA tournament on Friday, beating North Carolina State 76-72 in the second round of the East Regional.

The ninth-seeded Owls (24-9) will face winner of the Indiana-LIU Brooklyn game on Sunday, which represents a breakthrough for Temple right there.

The Owls are trying to shed its reputation as an easy-out team. They’d made the tournament each of the last five years, losing their opening game all but once. They haven’t been to the round of 16 since 2001, when they reached the Elite Eight.

Temple opened a 17-point lead before Wyatt – the Atlantic 10’s player of the year and top scorer – hurt his left thumb and left the game briefly, returning with black tape on the non-shooting hand. It clearly bothered him every time he tried to grip the ball.

Every shot was an adventure, but he made enough – including 6 of 6 from the line in the final 32 seconds – to keep Temple around for more than one game. He hit his last two with 2.2 seconds to go.

How bad was the thumb?

“It’s sore,” he said, deciding that didn’t fully describe the pain. “It’s sore. It’s sore.”

No. 8 NC State (24-11) trailed most of the game, but cut it to 74-72 on Lorenzo Brown’s jumper with 2 seconds left. Wyatt was fouled on the inbounds play and finished it off.

The Wolfpack went to the round of 16 last season and yearned for a deep tournament run in a year dedicated to its most famous finish. Richard Howell had 14 points and 15 rebounds for NC State, which couldn’t fully take advantage of its advantage up-front.

The Wolfpack is commemorating the 30-year anniversary of its national title under coach Jim Valvano, the one with the wild ending. Lorenzo Charles grabbed Dereck Whittenburg’s off-target shot and slammed it home at the buzzer for a 54-52 win over Houston, sending Valvano on his joyous ramble around the court.

Wyatt cut off any hopes of a last-second win for NC State this time.

Both sides knew it could come down to an inside job.

The Owls were overshadowed on the front line, where N.C. State had the 6-foot-8 Howell, the ACC’s leading rebounder. Temple’s top inside threat – leading rebounder Anthony Lee – was limited in practice this week after getting tested for a concussion following the Atlantic 10 tournament.

Lee was replaced in the starting lineup Friday by 6-foot-9 Jake O’Brien, making his seventh start. O’Brien, who likes to shoot the three, played the leading role in Temple’s fast start. He finished with 18 points.

Still, the onus was on the 6-foot-4 Wyatt, the A-10’s leading scorer at 19.8 points per game. Wyatt had three driving baskets – two of them off steals – and O’Brien hit a 3 for a 33-18 lead with 6:38 left in the half.

Lee got into the game briefly and scored a basket, but O’Brien was the Owls’ main guy up-front. He hit yet another three with 18 seconds left for a 38-22 lead at halftime, giving him a game-high 13 points. C.J. Leslie and the rest of the Wolfpack walked off the court stunned, the shock showing in their listless stride and blank faces.

Wyatt has a knack for wriggling free in the lane and drawing fouls, but his long-range shot has been off. He missed 12 straights shots during a loss to Massachusetts during the A-10 tournament, and was only 4 of 23 behind the arc in his last three games.

Wyatt still struggled with his outside shot – only 1 of 7 behind the arc – but compensated by driving inside for baskets over taller defenders. He went 12 of 14 from the foul line.

After Wyatt hurt his hand in the second half, N.C. State started its best spurt of the game, getting the ball inside four times for baskets – two each by Howell and Brown – that cut it to 47-39 with 13:08 to go.

Wyatt grabbed his left thumb occasionally and was off on his shot, but the Owls managed to keep their distance until the closing minutes. Scott Wood, the ACC’s top three-point shooter, missed his first four shots, but hit back-to-back threes that cut it to 63-60 with 3:08 left.

He missed another three with 1:11 to go, and Wyatt finished it off with those free throws.

The exiled Russian tycoon Boris Berezovsky has been found dead at his home in Surrey.

The circumstances of the death of Mr Berezovsky – a wanted man in Russia, and an opponent of President Vladimir Putin – are not yet known.

A former Kremlin power-broker whose fortunes declined under Mr Putin, Mr Berezovsky emigrated to the UK in 2000.

Last year, he lost a £3bn ($4.7bn) damages claim against Chelsea Football Club owner Roman Abramovich.

Mr Berezovsky claimed he had been intimidated by Mr Abramovich into selling shares in Russian oil giant Sibneft for a “fraction of their true worth”.

The allegations were completely rejected by the London Commercial Court judge, who called Mr Berozovsky an “inherently unreliable” witness.

Friday March 22nd, 2013

The U.S. national soccer team’s road to the 2014 World Cup will pass through several distinctive locations, but none as surreal and farcical as the snow-blasted setting in suburban Denver on Friday night.

Fourteen months from now, if the Americans are avoiding sunburn in Brazil, they will surely look back at a March blizzard that turned DSG Park into Aspen. In swirling snow, difficult footing and poor visibility, Clint Dempsey drove a yellow ball into the net in the 16th minute for a 1-0 victory over Costa Rica.

undefined
A qualifying match that began in inconvenient — and quite pretty — conditions crumbled into an extraordinary scene.

Soccer games are rarely stopped or postponed but the snow continued to fall. And in the 55th minute, Salvadoran referee Joel Aguilar halted the action. During a brief interruption, however, players on both teams seemed to persuade him to resume play.

With more snow expected Saturday, Aguilar and the match commissioner, who is from the Caribbean island of Grenada, set out to finish the match in its entirety. At one point, U.S. defender Geoff Cameron placed his hand on the back of a grounds crew member armed with a shovel and guided him along a line marking.

“It was an embarrassment for soccer tonight,” Costa Rica Coach Jorge Luis Pinto said.

The Americans (1-1-0, three points) survived several scares in the second of their 10 final-round regional qualifiers to move into second place behind Honduras (1-0-1, four) in the six-nation standings.

They extended their home unbeaten streak in World Cup qualifiers to 23 games (21-0-2) dating from 2001, and gained valuable points after losing the opener at Honduras last month and enduring weeks of injuries and off-field distractions.

“It was a nice snow battle — the most important part is you get the three points,” U.S. Coach Juergen Klinsmann said.

The settings for the U.S. team’s first four qualifiers: sweltering heat in Honduras’ lowlands, freezing weather in Colorado’s high plains, oxygen deprivation in Mexico City next Tuesday and summer sizzle in Jamaica in June.

For many countries, venue selection is strategic in providing a clear advantage. In the U.S. Soccer Federation’s case, both climate and demographics in a diverse country come into play. The Mexico home match in September, for instance, will be held in Columbus, Ohio — a location that has hosted the Mexicans in the dead of winter.

Denver, the Mile High City, was also selected for altitude ahead of the trip to Mexico City (7,350 feet).

Spring welcomed the U.S. team early in the week, but conditions turned badly late Friday afternoon with strong winds and bursts of sideways snow.

Costa Rica is a tropical country but eight starters are employed by northern European or MLS clubs. So the weather advantage wasn’t as pronounced as one would expect.

Maintenance crews shoveled and mini-plows ran laps. The surface was marginally playable at the start and only got worse. During stoppages, the shovel brigade scurried out to re-expose the sidelines.

The breakthrough came in the 16th minute when Jozy Altidore ripped a low shot from beyond the penalty area. His target was the near corner, but as goalkeeper Keilor Navas slid over, the ball caromed off defender Roy Miller’s leg and spun into Dempsey’s path in the middle of the box for a simple finish – his 32nd goal in 93 appearances.

It continued a miserable month for Miller, who was recently benched by the New York Red Bulls after intentionally encroaching on a San Jose penalty kick. He said afterward he thought, incorrectly, such a violation would negate a possible goal. The shot was saved, but Miller’s actions led to a retake, which was converted.

The Americans had a case for a penalty kick in the 42nd minute when Dempsey was tripped, but Aguilar, positioned a few yards away, allowed play to continue.

When the half ended, the grounds crew rushed back to work, bringing only temporary relief. Aguilar had the power to stop the match but declined to intervene.

Costa Rica threatened several times in the second half, most notably in the 70th minute when an offside call wiped out an apparent goal.

When it ended, the Americans thanked the fans and played in the snow.

Lakers 99 – Pacers 93 (Final)

The Lakers muscled out arguably their best win of the season, defeating the Pacers in Indiana, 99-93.

Kobe Bryant got through a quarter on a severely sprained ankle he suffered Wednesday night against the Atlanta Hawks, but couldn’t play after 12 scoreless minutes.

His teammates came through with contributions from some unlikely sources. Steve Blake (18 points) and Antawn Jamison (17) contributed 35 off the bench, both hitting crucial shots against a tough Indiana squad.

Metta World Peace helped carry the Lakers’ offense in key stretches, scoring 19 points while helping to anchor the Lakers’ defense.

Blake also had seven assists and four steals while hitting 5-of-7 from three-point range.  Jamison hit 4-of-7 threes in a game where the Lakers shot just 42.3% from the field.

Dwight Howard led the Lakers with 20 points, 12 boards and four blocks, hitting 6-of-11 from the line. The Lakers big man played through foul trouble all night but was still able to help control the Pacers on the defensive end.

Indiana shot 37.4% from the field but hit 12-of-27 from three-point range (44.4%). George Hill led the way with 27 points, Paul George followed with 20.

The Lakers improve to 35-32, defeating the second-place team in the Eastern Conference. The Pacers fall to 40-25 — a full game ahead of the slumping New York Knicks.

Pacers 69 – Lakers 68 (end of third quarter)

After 12 scoreless minutes in the first quarter, Kobe Bryant couldn’t return on his sprained ankle.Jodie Meeks started the second half and the Pacers quickly scored 13 straight to pull ahead 56-50.

The Lakers battled back behind an offensive burst from Metta World Peace to briefly take back the lead. The Pacers ended the third up 69-68.

World Peace led the Lakers with 17 points through three quarters. Dwight Howard had 13 points, 11 boards and four blocks as the Lakers held the Pacers to 36% shooting.

George Hill and Paul George led Indiana with 17 each. Both teams had 13 turnovers.

The Lakers shot 37.9% from the field but 9-of-20 from three-point range. The Pacers also hit nine three pointers (19 attempts). Free throws were the difference for the Lakers with 23 attempts to Indiana’s six.

Lakers 46 – Pacers 41 (halftime)

Kobe Bryant didn’t play in the second quarter but Dwight Howard and the Lakers’ reserves built a lead on the Pacers.

Howard picked up his third foul halfway through the period but Antawn Jamison and Steve Blake helped carry the scoring load. Jamison finished a team-high 11 points. Blake had eight with four assists.

The Lakers fell behind by 11 before pulling ahead by the same margin, but the Pacers closed within five by the end of the half.

Steve Nash hit a shot slightly after the halftime buzzer. The officials ruled that the clock started 1 1/2 seconds too early but still wouldn’t allow Nash’s field goal. Instead the Pacers had to come back out of their locker room to finish the half . . . again.

jennings vikings 3.14.13

11:10a.m. EDT                March 14, 2013
The Minnesota Vikings are interested in wide receiver Greg Jennings, the latest Green Bay Packers free agent pursued by their NFC North rivals.

The agent for Jennings, Eugene Parker, told The Associated Press his client was visiting the Vikings on Thursday. ESPN first reported the trip.

The 29-year-old Jennings is coming off a second straight injury-affected season. He played in only eight games for the Packers in 2012, plus two in the playoffs, but the Vikings have been on the losing end of some of the best performances of his career since he was drafted in the second round in 2006.

After trading Percy Harvin and cutting Michael Jenkins, the Vikings currently have only three wide receivers with NFL experience: Jerome Simpson, Jarius Wright and Stephen Burton.
