Community members said Sunday they are grieving over word that a Jacksonville native was among those killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan.
Navy SEAL Chris Campbell, 36, perished Saturday when a helicopter was shot down over eastern Afghanistan.
Campbell’s death was confirmed Sunday by his parents Larry and Diane Campbell.
Thirty American troops and seven Afghan commandos were killed, according to U.S. officials. Among the troops were 22 SEALS, as well as three Air Force combat controllers, a dog handler, and his dog. The SEALS belonged to SEAL Team 6, the same elite unit that was responsible for killing Osama bin Laden in a May raid in Pakistan, though none of the troops who perished Saturday had participated in the raid.
“We are not talking to the media,” said Diane Campbell, who added she was not sure of her son’s rank. “We ask that people pray for us; we’ll be all right.”
Those in the community who knew Chris Campbell expressed disbelief and sadness.
Jacksonville resident Steven Carter, an old friend of the family, said he knew the Navy SEAL as a child.
“He was a good kid,” he said. “When I found out he joined the Navy, I was surprised, and when I found out he was a SEAL I was quite surprised.”
Carter expressed sympathy for the family as they grieved.
Former county commissioner Martin Aragona Jr., who graduated from White Oak High School in 1987, said he and Campbell had a number of friends in common and both played on the school football team.
“I was just sad to hear through some of our mutual friends that he had passed away,” Aragona said. “The whole White Oak community and Onslow County as well as the nation was saddened to hear what happened in Afghanistan.”
The crash is reported to be by far the deadliest single loss for American forces in the decade-old war.
