IN a massive blow for New South Wales captain Paul Gallen has been ruled out of the State of Origin decider.

Wests Tigers skipper Robbie Farah will now lead the Blues into battle at ANZ Stadium on Wednesday night.

Aaron Woods, who made his debut in New South Wales’ 26-6 defeat in Brisbane, comes into the 17-man squad.

NSW coach Laurie Daley called a team huddle at training where he broke the news to his players and Woods was hugged and high-fived by his Blues teammates following his promotion

It was expected that Gallen would be given until Sunday to prove his fitness but it was apparent he would be unable to overcome his foot injury he sustained in the second Origin clash at Suncorp Stadium.

Both he and and Greg Bird showed up to camp wearing moonboots to help them overcome their injuries and while team doctor Nathan Gibbs yesterday said he was confident Bird would be ready to play he remained doubtful about Gallen.

Daley while disappointed about his captain’s withdrawal, still had the utmost confidence in his players to win the series for the first time since 2005.

“It’s obviously a blow for us to lose Gallen but we will have 17 fit players going into the decider and we will be ready to do the job,” Daley said.

Manny Ramirez will try his shot at a return to the major leagues, as the Texas Rangers have agreed to a minor league deal with the slugger. (He has to cut his hair, though.)

Manny Ramirez will try to make it back to the major leagues after signing a minor-league deal with the Texas Rangers.

The last we heard of Manny, he was in Taiwan, doing this:

The 41-year-old, whose 555 home runs rank 14th on MLB’s all-time list, became a bit of a cult icon in Taiwan. But Ramirez left his Taiwanese team, the EDA Rhinos, before his three-month contract expired, and did so with the intention of returning to the major leagues.

Now, he’ll have his chance. Ramirez hasn’t played in MLB since 2011, when he had one hit in 17 plate appearances for the Tampa Bay Rays before his “retirement,” shortly followed by the news of a 100-game suspension after a PED test showed positive results. He signed a minor-league deal with the Oakland A’s organization last season, and after sitting out for 50 games, hit .302 for Triple-A Sacramento but struck out 17 times while reaching base 24 times in 69 plate appearances. He requested his release after just 17 games.

It appears Ramirez is more serious about his desire to make things work this time: he’s agreed to cut his famous locks and will follow all Rangers minor league rules.

Ramirez obviously isn’t expected to be the guy who hit 40 home runs, year-in, year-out with an OPS better than 1.000. Sure, he tore it up in Taiwan, hitting .352 with eight home runs in 49 games, but that’s a long way from the show, and he hasn’t shown the skill or committal to play in the big leagues anytime recently. But he’s one of the greats, if you ignore two positive steroid tests, with 12 All-Star appearances to his name. He’d likely be playing designated hitter at this point in his career, where he’d have to prove he’s an improvement on Lance Berkman, currently hitting .263 with six homers.

An openly gay lawmaker was silenced by colleagues on the Pennsylvania House floor Thursday when he attempted to speak about the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act.

State Rep. Brian Sims (D-Philadelphia) took to the House floor on Thursday to discuss the high court’s landmark ruling, which found the federal law barring the government from recognizing same-sex marriages legalized by states to be unconstitutional. However, as WHYY News and Philly.com report, Sims’ remarks were blocked by several state lawmakers using a procedural maneuver.

One of those lawmakers, conservative state Rep. Daryl Metcalfe (R-Butler), told WHYY that he believed Sims’ comments would be a violation of “God’s law.”

“I did not believe that as a member of that body that I should allow someone to make comments such as he was preparing to make that ultimately were just open rebellion against what the word of God has said, what God has said, and just open rebellion against God’s law,” Metcalfe said.

Sims said he had no intention of criticizing gay marriage detractors, and had only planned to highlight the importance of the court’s ruling.

“I wasn’t planning on chastising anybody. I wasn’t planning on discussing how far we have to come in Pennsylvania or that we really have no civil rights in Pennsylvania,” Sims said.

Two other Democrats attempted to speak in support of Sims, but they too were blocked.

At the end of the session, Sims rose to speak again, criticizing Metcalfe and others who had blocked him.

“A few months ago I reminded this House that we put our hands on the Bible and swore to uphold the Constitution, not the other way around. What I did was in no way against the law of any God,” he said, referencing a speech he made in April. “I can’t call anyone a bigot, a homophobe or racist, but language used against me does not live up to the standards of this body.”

Sims, who entered office in January, is the first openly gay lawmaker elected to the state legislature.

On Thursday, Sims and fellow Democratic Rep. Steve McCarter vowed to introduce a measure in the state House allowing same-sex marriage in Pennsylvania.

“LGBT Pennsylvanians are seeing their neighbors in New York, Maryland and Delaware, among other states, now qualify for the approximately 1,000 federal rights and benefits that come with civil marriage and they are increasingly asking why they don’t have those same rights, as well as the state rights and benefits,” Sims said in a statement.

Police in Brazil say they have detained four men in connection with the murder of a five-year-old Bolivian boy in the city of Sao Paulo.

Brayan Yanarico Capcha was shot in the head by masked robbers who complained he was crying too much during a robbery at his family’s house.

His family said the boy had begged the robbers not to be killed. He was in his mother’s arms when they shot him.

Bolivian immigrants held a protest outside the local police station.

The crime shocked people in Sao Paulo – a city familiar with high levels of violence.

The Yanarico family had moved to Sao Paulo six months ago. They lived in a the Sao Carlos shantytown in the east of the city.

“All we want now is justice and for the culprits to be arrested. Then we will go back to Bolivia,” said the father, Edberto Yanarico Quiuchaca, 28.

“We came here looking for better jobs, but all we found was violence.”

‘Don’t kill my mother!’

Veronica Capcha Mamani, 24, said six robbers came to their house on Friday evening, where she worked as a seamstress. Five of the men were wearing masks.

“We gave them 3,500 reais ($1,550; £1,000). They were impatient and asked for more. We gave them another 1,000 reais, but that is all we had,” she said.

“They put a knife on my son’s neck, asking for more money. He was crying a lot,” Ms Capcha said.

“Don’t kill me, don’t kill my mother!” were his last words, she said. “They were worried that his crying would alert the neighbours to the robbery.”

A police officer working on the case, Antonio Mestre Junior, said the four men arrested lived in a nearby shantytown.

The parents have not yet decided whether the body of their only child will be buried in Brazil or in Bolivia.

“We need financial help to return. We have been trying to contact the consulate,” said Mr Yanarico.

Tens of thousands of Bolivian immigrants live in Sao Paulo. Most of them live and work in very basic conditions.

Many, like the Yanarico family, speak very little Portuguese and Spanish. Their native tongue is either Aymara or Quechua, Bolivia’s main indigenous languages.

Indonesia’s president has apologised to neighbouring Malaysia and Singapore for the thick haze caused by fires in Sumatra.

Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said firefighters were working hard to extinguish the blazes.

The smog caused record levels of air pollution in Singapore and forced hundreds of Malaysian schools to close.

The haze is being blamed on illegal slash-and-burn fires used to clear land for palm oil production.

“As president of Indonesia, I apologise for what has happened and ask for the understanding of the people of Malaysia and Singapore,” Mr Yudhoyono said late on Monday.

“We accept it is our responsibility to tackle the problem,” he said, adding that there should be “a thorough investigation” into the fires.

The blaze strained diplomatic relations between Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore last week, as governments argued over who was to blame for the smog, and an Indonesian official suggested that Malaysian and Singaporean companies in Sumatra also bore some responsibility.

Two arrested

Indonesia is conducting water-bombing and cloud seeding operations in a bid to combat the fires, which are primarily in Sumatra’s Riau province.

Slash-and-burn clearances

Fire in Riau province, Indonesia, 22 June
  • Vegetation is cut down and burned to clear land for cultivation
  • Cheaper than using excavators and bulldozers
  • Illegal burning of forests to clear land for palm oil plantations is common in Indonesia – particularly in dry season
  • Indonesia says it is investigating several palm oil companies

Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency said that at least 69 of the 265 fires in Riau were put out on Monday, AP news agency reported.

Meanwhile, police in Indonesia said two people had been arrested for starting fires.

“We arrested two farmers in Riau who were clearing their land by burning. They were not working for anyone but just clearing their own land,” Agus Rianto, a police spokesman, said.

Malaysia declared a state of emergency in two southern districts on Sunday as air pollution levels reached a 16-year high, leaving two towns in virtual shutdown.

In Singapore, the Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) hit a record high of 401 on Friday – a level where prolonged exposure is considered potentially “life-threatening” for old and vulnerable people.

Air pollution levels dropped over the weekend as prevailing wind directions changed, the National Environment Agency said. On Tuesday morning, the PSI reading was 47, which is within the “good” range for air quality.

Thomas Anthony Eisan has been charged with possessing child pornography.

June 21, 2013              2:06 PM AT

A Halifax neighbourhood is reeling after word that a babysitter who lived and worked in the area is facing child pornography and weapons charges.

Thomas Anthony Eisan, 25, is charged with possessing child pornography, making available child pornography, unsafe storage of a firearm and breaching a court order, after a search of his home by the Internet Child Exploitation unit.

“We have information that he was in close proximity with children as part of his employment,” said Halifax police Const. Pierre Bourdages.

CBC News has learned that Eisan has worked for a number of Halifax organizations that deal with children, including the YMCA and, according to his online resume, St. Joseph’s Children’s Centre.

Most recently, Eisan has been employed as a live-in nanny and a frequent babysitter for as many as a dozen neighbourhood children.

A woman who lives in Eisan’s neighbourhood and asked not to be identified said police have interviewed her and many of her neighbours.

“I also feel like he’s broken a huge amount of trust and safety that this neighbourhood had and that it will take a long time. It’s one of these things you think, ‘This never happens to me, this happens to other people, it’s very rare.’ And then all of a sudden it comes to you and it’s shocking,“ she said.

Police said there’s no indication that local children are involved in any of the child pornography images that Eisan is alleged to have kept and shared.

But investigators are asking parents to give them photos of their children, of their faces and any identifying marks on their bodies.

In April, Eisan was charged with two counts of sexual assault dating back to July 2012.

He was working for the YMCA of Greater Halifax/Dartmouth at the time.

The alleged assaults do not involve children.

Benjamin Davis, chief operating officer with the YMCA, said Eisan’s employment was terminated in July 2012 after complaints from another staff member.

“We have no information from any sources that indicates any young person was at risk or harmed through interaction with this individual at the YMCA,” said Davis.

Police said Eisan appeared in court on Thursday and was released under a number of conditions:

  • Not to communicate with children under 16.
  • Not to be within 25 metres of a place children frequent.
  • Not to have any firearm, crossbow, prohibited weapon/device, restricted weapon, ammunition or explosive substance in his possession.
  • Not to possess an electronic device capable of connecting to the internet, including a computer or cell phone.
  • Comply with a curfew restricting him to his residence between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., seven days a week, except in the case of a medical emergency.

Police said Eisan was arrested on Black Street in Halifax’s north end. He will be back in court on Sept. 4.

10:18 AM EDT          Sunday June 23, 2013

The body of an 8-year-old girl who was abducted Friday night from a Walmart in Jacksonville, Florida, was discovered Saturday morning, police said.

“This is a transition from an abduction investigation to a murder investigation,” Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office spokesman Shannon Hartley told reporters. “Obviously, we have the unfortunate answer that we didn’t want to have.”

Donald James Smith, 56, faces kidnapping and murder and charges. He was listed as being held without bond Saturday night.

Smith is a registered sex offender who was released from custody on May 31, according to Michael Williams, director of the sheriff’s investigations department. Authorities from the sheriff’s office had just made contact with him to verify his address on Friday morning, Williams said.

Later that same day, a woman called police to report that her daughter was missing from the Walmart.

Authorities initially called on the public to help find Charish Lilly Perriwinkle, who had been wearing an orange sundress, purple flip-flops and a pink ribbon when she went missing.

After the investigation revealed that the girl had been abducted, an Amber Alert was activated, Hartley said. He identified Smith, “a man with a very extensive criminal history” that included a kidnapping conviction, as a suspect.

Williams said the girl’s mother first met Smith on Friday night at a local Dollar General store, where he offered to take the family to Walmart to buy them some clothes.

“After being inside the store for a couple hours, the man then offered to buy some hamburgers,” Williams told reporters. “As he walked to the front of the store, he took our 8-year-old victim with him. They walked to the front of the Walmart toward the McDonald’s. They did not stop at the McDonald’s. They walked outside, got in his van and left the location.”

On Saturday morning, police stopped Smith, 56, as he drove a white van southbound on I-95 in Jacksonville and detained him without incident, Hartley said.

“Obviously, having Mr. Smith in custody is a huge break for us,” he said as the search for the girl was continuing. “We are very confident that he was the one that took her from the Walmart.”

Soon after, Hartley said in a subsequent news conference, police followed a lead that took them four miles from the Walmart to a church, near which the child’s body was discovered.

According to records from the Duval County Clerk of Courts, Smith’s most recent convictions occurred last year on charges from 2009 for unlawful impersonation of a public employee and aggravated child abuse by willful torture, for which he was sentenced to a year in county jail.

“The first thing I would tell you is, as a parent, hug your children closely right now and know where they’re at,” Hartley said. “Just pay attention to them, keep them close.”

It begins! With a week to go until Big Brother Season 15 premieres, CBS has announced the names and details of the 16 houseguests who will compete against one another this summer for the half-million dollar prize. Earlier this week, we learned that there would be a few more houseguests in the BB house than usual this season, thanks to the extra weeks, and that one of the twists means there will be a third nominee on the block each week. The other was that America will be able to vote for a weekly “MVP” contestant, based on how they play the game.

In addition to announcing the contestants, CBS has opened the voting for the new season’s first MVP. Of course, we have no idea how any of them is playing the game just yet, but the site includes each houseguest’s planned strategy. That’s the plan that – for at least some of them – will probably go right out the window once they start to get to know the other houseguests. But still, it gives us some clue as to how these contestants will be trying to play the game.

In addition to not knowing who’s playing the best game, we also don’t know what the MVP’s “special power” will be, so we’re really kind of going into this blind from the start, but that’s ok. So are the houseguests, assuming none of them know one another.

Here are the photos and some basic information about each of the houseguests.

seven wonderful ladies will compete for the title and

This year’s contestants are:

n Hannah Ware, daughter of Greg Ware and Mary Weston,

an incoming junior at Beaverton High School. She will be

singing for the talent portion of the competition.

Krista, Kaitlyn and Emma are all returning participants.

Interesting to note as well that Krista and Erica will be competing

as sisters!

“We started preparing for the pageant the first week of

May,” said coordinator Gwen McCulloch. “The young ladies

attend practices twice a week, writing an essay for the judges

to read, preparing their on stage performances and walking

in heels. For some of these ladies it will be the first time they

have been on a stage in front of a crowd and we want them to

be ready.”

McCulloch said that even before the girls step on stage,

they are already being evaluated.

“Not everyone knows, but the judging doesn’t begin at

the pageant. The judges meet with each girl and conduct

a 10-minute interview the afternoon of the pageant,” she

explained. “They also receive an essay prior to the pageant

so they are able to know a little background about the girls

before to meeting them. The night of the pageant the girls will

be judged on their 60-second introduction, talent and evening

gown.”

Judges will be looking for poise, neatness, character etc., all

based on a points system.

“With such a diverse group of young ladies, this should be

an interesting pageant,” McCulloch noted.

“We encourage the community to come out and support our

local youth,” she invited. “The Miss Beaverton Scholarship

Pageant is one of the longest running pageants in Michigan,

with your help it will continue to provide scholarship opportunities.”

Why not start off the 4th of July Celebration by cheering

on your favorite contestant? The pageant will be held June 29

at 7 p.m. It will be an evening full of fun, entertainment and

door prizes. Tickets will be $ 5 at the door, programs will be

Charged: Jesse Daniels is being charged with child endangerment for locking two vandals in a closet while he waited for police to arrive

16:18 EST             16 June 2013

A man who says he caught four boys vandalizing his father-in-law’s home has been charged with child endangerment after corralling them in a closet until police arrived.

Jesse Daniels was arraigned on four counts of endangering the welfare of a child after authorities say he interrupted the vandalism at the empty home in the Wayne County village of Clyde, midway between Rochester and Syracuse.

Daniels, 53, told WHAM-TV in Rochester that he heard pounding coming from the home next door the night of June 8. The house is empty while Daniels renovates it for his father-in-law.

Daniels said he went to investigate while his wife called 911. He said he found four boys, ages 8 and 10, inside with hammers. He took a hammer from one, then stuck the boys in a closet until officers arrived, he said.

‘I was fortunate that they were in that room that had a closet, so I put them in the closet,’ he said. ‘I said, “Listen, you guys are staying here until the police come, period.”‘

Their parents said Daniels handled the boys roughly and threatened them with the hammer.

The damage to the home included holes in the walls, broken windows and graffiti derogatory to women spray-painted on walls. Daniels estimated that the damage to his father-in-law’s property exceeds $40,000.

He said he believed the boys committed the vandalism in retaliation for Daniels’ wife telling them earlier in the day to stay off the couple’s property.

The boys have been charged with burglary and criminal mischief. Their cases are being handled in Wayne County Family Court.

Paul Bowler, the father of two of the boys, told the station that there are no excuses for his sons’ actions.

‘I understand they were in the wrong, but there are other ways to handle it,’ he said. ‘He (Daniels) knew who the kids were. It’s not like they were strangers. And send the kids home and call the cops then. You don’t sit there and torment them and tell them you’re going to bash their skulls in with a hammer.’

Bowler said Daniels grabbed the neck of one of his sons and left a mark. He said that his boys are traumatized and that Daniels should have faced more charges.

Daniels counters that he was just trying to protect his family.

Daniels is due back in court later this month. It wasn’t immediately clear if he has a lawyer.

Wayne County District Attorney Richard Healy told the station that the incident is still under investigation.

Toronto police chief discusses Thursday's raids in Toronto

June 14, 2013            6:15 AM ET

Police plan to boost their presence in the troubled Dixon Road area of northwest Toronto, an announcement that comes one day after a series of pre-dawn raids led to multiple arrests related to trafficking in guns and drugs.

“This is all about creating a safer neighbourhood,” said Deputy Chief Peter Sloly. “This neighbourhood was being victimized by a violent gang. We’re making sure that a new gang doesn’t form in the vacuum of the one that was dismantled.”

Police arrested 43 people in the raids on Thursday, including 19 in Toronto and nine in Windsor, Ont., as part of the anti-gang sweep dubbed Project Traveller.

Much of the Toronto operation focused on the area of Dixon Road between Kipling and Islington avenues, where police say a violent gang known as the Dixon Bloods or Dixon Goonies was involved in trafficking in both guns and drugs.

Police said Friday they will lay charges for about 300 serious offences, including murder, attempted murder and numerous drug and weapons trafficking charges.

Police displayed a sample of the weapons, drugs and cash seized in the sweep, and said the plan is to post uniformed officers in the neighbourhood.

“We’re not doing this in opposition to the community,” said Sloly. “We’re doing this in co-operation and co-ordination within the community. The vast majority of people in this community are good, decent hardworking people.”

The Dixon Road neighbourhood has been in the news almost daily since mid-May, when a news story broke about the existence of a video tape that is reported to show Mayor Rob Ford smoking crack cocaine.

Thursday’s raid locations included a building at 320 Dixon Rd. that has been cited in reports as the place where the alleged video was said to have been stashed.

Ford has denied the video exists. So far, it has yet to surface.

Chief Blair won’t comment on any Ford connection

In morning interviews with CBC, Toronto police Chief Bill Blair again refused to comment on whether there are any connections between Thursday’s massive operation Rob Ford, saying any evidence collected during the investigation will only be revealed through the courts.

A house at 15 Windsor Rd., located steps away from 320 Dixon Rd., has also been central to the Ford story.

A now-infamous photo showing Ford standing with a group of young men was taken outside the house. One of the men in the photo, Anthony Smith, was shot dead outside a downtown Toronto nightclub in March. Another man in the same photo, Muhammad Khattak, was arrested as part of Thursday’s police operation.

CBC News obtained a court document listing some of the search warrants for Thursday’s raids. According to that document, police had obtained a search warrant for 15 Windsor Rd. But Blair said Thursday that house was not among the addresses searched as part of Project Traveller.

“The rule of law on this one is crystal clear,” Blair said Friday morning. “The evidence that we gather in our investigations is most, and only, appropriately presented publicly in a court of law, and so we’re going to follow those rules.”

Echoing comments made during a Thursday press conference announcing details of the raid, Blair said he could not comment further on the investigation, including whether Ford had a relationship with the men in the photo or whether police had seized the alleged video.

Blair said the timing of the raid had nothing to do with the allegations against Ford that have caused upheaval at City Hall over the last few weeks.

“I am well aware of the public’s intense interest in aspects of this situation, but at the same time I think the public interest is best served by dismantling that criminal organization, by protecting the safety of that community,” he said.

Because it’s a slow news cycle during the dead period before training camp, and this classifies as discussion fodder!

On Tuesday night, a debate of sorts broke out on Twitter between former BGN contributor Jimmy Kempski (of Blogging the Beast) and ESPN’s NFC East blogger Dan Graziano. A question was posed to Graziano, and he responded with his answer:

Under. RT @frankie_junior: @espn_nfceast Over/under on Chip Kelly tenure at 3.5 seasons. Go.

— Dan Graziano (@espn_nfceast) June 12, 2013

Kempski took notice:

Requesting you expand on that a bit. RT @espn_nfceast Under. RT @frankie_junior: Over/under on Chip Kelly tenure at 3.5 seasons. Go.

— Jimmy Kempski (@Jimmy_Beast) June 12, 2013

Graziano obliged:

@jimmy_beast 3.5 is average NFL HC tenure, and this guy has no prior NFL experience. Easy play.

— Dan Graziano (@espn_nfceast) June 12, 2013

It went on like this between the two for a few more tweets, with Graziano stating in response to our very own SouthernPhilly that he thinks Kelly could also just “bail.” Kempski pointed out that the Eagles committed $32.5M over five years to Kelly, making him one of the league’s highest-paid coaches. Also that such a financial investment shows the team REALLY believes in Chip’s vision and is all in — I hate writing those two words, brings back bad 2011 memories — on him.

I have two thoughts here. First:

@jimmy_beast @tomrylebtb It’ll be fun to shove this in Graziano’s face WHEN he’s wrong. Also, Garrett will be fired first.

— Dan Klausner (@dklausner) June 12, 2013

Second: I think Chip will get four seasons at the minimum, thus the “over.” If things are disastrous, perhaps the Eagles cut ties going into the lame duck season and eat the final $6.5M. But as you can see from my tweet (and previous articles), I happen to think things will be quite the opposite of disastrous.

In fact, I think Kelly could be the last man standing of all the current NFC East head coaches. Tom Coughlin turns 67 in August and, one would imagine, is close to retirement. Jason Garrett, already having lost play-calling duties to Bill Callahan, can’t have too much more rope in Dallas, no matter what Jerry Jones says. Then there’s Mike Shanahan, who has Andy Reid-like power in Washington and his franchise QB in RG3. Yet I’ve heard more than a few times on talk radio here in DC speculation that his job might not be 100% safe after what happened with RG3 at the end of last season, and that Dan Snyder could be reluctant to offer him a contract extension (2014 is the last of the five-year deal signed in 2010) if the Redskins regress in 2013. I’m not sure how much I buy such a narrative given that there’s finally stability with the franchise, but then there’s the old adage about a leopard never changing its spots.

Ian Kennedy has been struggling, and the hit by pitches are just a part of that.

On Tuesday night, I called Ian Kennedy a “menace” on Twitter, and suggested that I thought he was a headhunter. After looking at more data and at the situations, I have a different opinion this morning: I don’t think that Kennedy was trying to hit Yasiel Puig in the head. I also kind of doubt he was actually trying to brain Zack Greinke, though, he was certainly trying to hit him.

Needless to say, both Zack Greinke and Ian Kennedy were wrong last night. Greinke shouldn’t have hit Miguel Montero in the back in retaliation for the incidental hitting of Puig, and Ian Kennedy was almost tragically in the wrong for sniping at Greinke. Both of them were bush league: That kind of crap should have no place in Major League Baseball, and I hope they’re both suspended for at least six days.

All of that said, this isn’t a post about who was right and who was wrong in an ethical sense. It’s about what was right and what’s now wrong with Ian Kennedy. In 2011, Kennedy won 21 games with a 2.88 ERA and rightfully finished high (4th) in the Cy Young voting. Despite working in the low 90s with his fastball, Kennedy managed to strike out 22 percent of the batters he faced, well above the NL average of 18 percent for starting pitchers, while posting one of the 15 best walk rates in the league. On top of it all, he managed to keep the ball in the ballpark, too. It was a perfect storm of command and control excellence, as he led the Diamondbacks to the NL West title and the second best finish in the franchise’s existence.

Alas, it was not to last. Kennedy is an extreme fly ball pitcher, and as such he relies on keeping runners off the bases by limiting his walks and hits allowed. Despite seeing his home run rate return to its historical norm last year, Kennedy remained a league average pitcher in large part because he was able to limit walks and batting average on balls in play. This year, however, not only has he continued to allow homers at an above average rate, but the precious command he needs has abandoned him. In fact, he’s walking batters at a higher than league average rate. Worse, more than a quarter of the batters he faces are ripping line drives off of him, especially as he falls behind more often and leaves pitches in the middle of the plate. Nearly 10 percent of the batters he faces come away with an extra base hit. In light of that, it’s easy to see why he has a 5.49 ERA and is frustrating his pitching coach with his inconsistency.

Dodgers-Diamondbacks brawl: Benches clear in LA

While his propensity to work inside and generate HBPs might have been a harmless byproduct when he was going well, it’s a burgeoning problem for Kennedy. He led the NL in HBP last year, and is on pace (with eight HBP in 13 starts) to hit more than 20 batters this year, a mark that hasn’t been reached since 2004. We saw last night how this lack of command can come back to bite him, as he unintentionally went too far up and in on Puig to put him on in front of Andre Ethier, who proceeded to slug his first homer since May 20. In 2011, Kennedy allowed 19 homers, only six in which runners were on. Last year, eleven out of 28. This year, six out of the 13 homers he’s allowed have come with runners on base.

If Kennedy has lost command, as these numbers seem to indicate, he’s simply not going to be an effective pitcher going forward. Worse, if he continues to try and pitch inside like he has been to right-handed hitters throughout his career, he’s going to hurt somebody. Intentional or not, he almost severely injured Puig and Greinke last night — a guy who can’t control where that pitch is going to end up has no business endangering the careers of the guys he’s playing against.

Maybe Kennedy is a menace, even if he doesn’t mean to be. It’s a cold comfort that, if he keeps pitching like this, he won’t be putting those batters in danger for much longer.

A well-known Hong Kong billionaire has offered $65m (£40m) to any man able to woo and marry his lesbian daughter.

Property and shipping tycoon Cecil Chao publicly promised the “marriage bounty” after reports emerged that his daughter had wed her long-term girlfriend.

Mr Chao, who has never married himself, told the BBC his daughter was still single and needed a “good husband”.

Same-sex unions are not recognised in Hong Kong, although homosexuality was decriminalised in 1991.

Gigi Chao, a businesswoman and graduate from the University of Manchester, is said to have married her female partner of seven years, Sean Eav, in a ceremony in France earlier this year.

But her flamboyant father rejected the claims as false, adding that his generous offer had already generated many replies from potential suitors.

“It is an inducement to attract someone who has the talent but not the capital to start his own business,” Mr Chao said.

“I don’t mind whether he is rich or poor. The important thing is that he is generous and kind-hearted.

“Gigi is a very good woman with both talents and looks. She is devoted to her parents, is generous and does volunteer work.”

His public hunt for a husband notwithstanding, Mr Chao insisted he would not force his daughter to marry a man against her will.

Ms Chao said she found her father’s plan entertaining and would not worry about it until an actual suitor had been found.

Making Alberto Gonzales Look Good

Government officials employ various tactics to avoid actually saying anything at intelligence hearings, mostly by fogging up the room with references to national security and with vague generalities. It’s part of a dance, which the public and the media may grumble about but which we also expect.

Outright lying is another matter.

On March 12, James Clapper, director of national intelligence, testified at an open congressional hearing. Senator Ron Wyden, Democrat of Oregon, asked him whether the National Security Agency collects “any type of data at all on millions or hundreds of millions of Americans.”

His answer: “No sir.” Then he added: “Not wittingly.”

It was a lie, as everyone now knows from the articles about the N.S.A.’s data-mining program.

Mr. Wyden knew it wasn’t true at the time, since he is on the Senate Intelligence Committee and is privy to secret briefings from people like, well, Mr. Clapper.

On Sunday, NBC’s Andrea Mitchell asked Mr. Clapper about the exchange.

“First, I have great respect for Senator Wyden,” Mr. Clapper said, using a Washington code phrase to indicate that he has no respect for the senator. “I thought, though in retrospect, I was asked ‘when are you going to start–stop beating your wife’ kind of question, which is, meaning not answerable necessarily, by a simple yes or no. So I responded in what I thought was the most truthful or least most untruthful manner, by saying, ‘No.’”

Mr. Clapper further explained his least-untruthiness by saying he thoughtMr. Wyden was asking whether the N.S.A. was actually listening to phone conversations (which Mr. Wyden clearly was not). “Going back to my metaphor, what I was thinking of is looking at the Dewey Decimal numbers of those books in the metaphorical library,” he said. “To me collection of U.S. persons data would mean taking the books off the shelf, opening it up and reading it.”

This was not, by the way, the first time data-collection came up at a Senate hearing. At a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in July 2006, then-Attorney General Alberto Gonzales was asked whether the government had accumulated large amounts of data on Americans’ routine phone calls. “The programs and activities you ask about, to the extent that they exist, would be highly classified,” Mr. Gonzales said.

You have to wonder about giving a position of vast responsibility to someone who can beat Mr. Gonzales in dishonesty.

Fred Kaplan wrote in Slate today that Mr. Clapper should be fired. I doubt Mr. Obama is going to do that. But, as Mr. Kaplan said, Mr. Clapper’s participation in any public discussion of the limits of data mining will be of no value, since we are going to have to parse his meanings of complex words like “yes” and “no.”

June 08, 2013            12:00AM

LEANING on the rail of the cruise liner, they could be mistaken for a blushing bride and her new husband setting off on their honeymoon.

Staff on the cruise referred to them as Mr and Mrs Ryan. He picked up the $10,000 bill for the three-day voyage on the six-star Silversea liner to Lord Howe Island, even buying her a new wardrobe of clothes and shoes.

But back on dry land in the summer of 2006, there were another three women waiting for him who each thought they were “the one”.

They had all fallen for the same man – suave city lawyer and horse breeding multi-millionaire Michael Ryan.

Now they are not fighting over the man they all loved but over his $8 million fortune.

It wasn’t until Mr Ryan died last year, aged 60, a recluse in his rundown Fairlight home – where he had become so weak that he let cockroaches crawl over him – that the women all found out about each other and how he had been seducing them for 20 years, often more than one at the same time.

While Marie (Mirka) Christos was having her hair washed and styled daily in the ship’s salon, paid for by Ryan, back at his Sydney harbourside mansion, Janet Amprimo thought her boyfriend had just gone yachting for a few days.

Meanwhile, Denise De Bono was looking forward to the “regular” visits he made to her in Melbourne, staying in her apartment or in swanky hotel rooms at the Adelphi or Hyatt.

And Gillian Crighton was texting him and visiting his house, wondering why he never answered the door as she hoped he had “mellowed” while she considered a reconciliation.

Ms Christos, 50, a former legal secretary, has dropped her claim against his estate, fearing lawyers’ costs, but the other three women are scheduled to attend the Supreme Court later this month for compulsory mediation with the executor of the will, Mr Ryan’s former accountant David Wynn.

Mr Ryan, then a partner at McClellands Lawyers, shot to infamy later in 2006 when Ms Christos, who was searching through his garbage bin for evidence that he was seeing Ms Amprimo, found incriminating documents about his most famous client, former Federal Court judge Marcus Einfeld.

Einfeld was later jailed for two years for perjury and attempting to pervert the course of justice over a speeding fine after falsely claiming a dead woman was driving his car.

Mr Ryan’s complicated love life and tragic final years, when he shunned the world, have been revealed in affidavits sworn by the women in their claims for a share of his will.

Ms Christos, whom Mr Ryan romanced away from her work at a brothel in 2000, said he charmed people because he led them to believe they were special to him and that they knew everything about him but in reality, he made sure no one really knew him.

“That’s the way he wanted it,” she said in her affidavit.

She said that one of his best mates, British racing tycoon Ivan Allan, had told her in 2007: “(Ryan) told me he loved you very much and he regretted not marrying you.”

Ms Amprimo, 48, said she met Ryan in 1995 while working at the Daily Planet brothel in Melbourne. In mid-2005 he gave her a ring, saying it would fit best on her wedding finger, but she never had the “confidence” to ask him what he meant by the gift.

In April 2006, he bought them a holiday house in the Blue Mountains, she said.

Ms De Bono, 55, said she had moved into his mansion in 1995 and nursed his mother, Eugene, as she died of cancer.

“I had a close and loving relationship with Michael from when we met in early 1992 to the day he died,” she said.

In 2009 she visited his closed and darkened mansion with a friend of his, Karen Conti, and saw Ms Christos sitting in a car over the road. “That woman looks familiar. She looks like the woman who implicated Michael in the newspaper articles. I think it’s Mirka Christos,” she said Ms Conti told her.

Ms Crighton, who met Ryan in 1983 while she worked as a receptionist, said they had a “close personal intimate relationship” from 1983 to

1992 but despite their lavish lifestyle of dining at five-star restaurants and weekends away, he was mean with her.

Their relationship ended acrimoniously when she lost all her belongings, including Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Dior handbags, a Valentino ballgown and a Chanel suit after he refused to give her the $100 to stop a storage company from selling her belongings.

But despite all that, she still could not forget him. “I realised he was deceitful, contrary, controlling and a selfish bastard but apart from that he was tall, dark and handsome and I seemed to be still under his spell,” she said in her affidavit.

Mr Ryan had been dead for several days before his body was discovered in his house. His cause of death was ischemic heart disease.

In his 1996 will, drawn up after his mother died, he split his estate between four friends – none of them his girlfriends.

Yesterday Ms Crighton said she had no comment.

The lawyers for Ms De Bono and Ms Amprimo did not return calls.

The publication ban in a case of alleged assisted suicide in Hinton has now been lifted.

The body of 79-year-old Shirley Vann was found inside a car with American plates that was parked outside the Hinton Healthcare Centre on May 10.

Although Vann’s body had no obvious injuries and the autopsy results are not yet complete, the Crown has reported there is some indication she may have been poisoned by carbon monoxide.

Hinton RCMP charged Vann’s daughter, 53-year-old Linda McNall with assisting in her mother’s suicide — an offence that carries a maximum 14 year jail sentence.

At that time charges were laid, a justice of the peace agreed to a temporary publication ban on the names of the alleged victim and the accused, which was lifted on Wednesday.

McNall remains in police custody. She made her first appearance in court on Wednesday via video, but did not speak.

McNall’s lawyer told the court the defendant may have a mental disorder which would mean she cannot be found criminally responsible. She has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric assessment.

While details are still forthcoming, CBC reporter Janice Johnston has learned that McNall and her mother had been living in an apartment in Sierra Vista, Arizona prior to the incident in Hinton — but left town abruptly without paying rent.

They then traveled to Alberta where sources say they spent at least some time living in a tent north of Hinton.

Gallen v Myles

June 07, 2013         12:00AM

PAUL Gallen finally had enough last night. Fed-up with losing – and with Queenslander Nate Myles.

In a highly controversial moment, the NSW skipper snapped before halftime in last night’s brutal State of Origin opener, belting Myles twice in the head.

Most loved it, some hated it. Gallen though was making a stand. He – and his side – were sick of taking rubbish off Myles and the Maroons.

Myles infuriated the Blues by leading with his head in a first-half tackle that floored Blues fullback Jarryd Hayne. Gallen claimed Myles had been “headbutting”.

The get-square was always coming.

Gallen was later hit with a grade two striking charge. He was not punished for a swinging arm in the same tackle. If he pleads guilty, Gallen will miss one NRL game.

“Nate Myles has been dominating Origin for the past three years – someone had to stand up to him,” Gallen said.

“We have had enough of being bullied. That is a compliment to him.”

Blues coach Laurie Daley added: “It was one of the great Origin moments as far as I’m concerned.”

NSW took the first step toward ending Queensland’s Origin dominance with a famous 14-6 win over the Maroons before 80,380 fans at a noisy ANZ Stadium.

It was a triumph for Daley, in charge of his first game as NSW coach. Defeat will knock some arrogance out of this all-conquering Maroons side.

What would State of Origin be without a brawl?

Last night’s match boiled over on halftime when Gallen and Myles came to blows.

The pair shaped up before Gallen landed two blows – a left and right – which both connected on Myles’ chin.

Players rushed in, the match reached flashpoint.

As the two teams were separated, the drama appeared ready to boil-over again with a verbal altercation between Gallen and Maroons centre Greg Inglis.

Angered at Myles, Gallen told referee Ashley Klein: “He is getting my knee and twisting it every time. He’s been doing it series after series, headbutting and twisting.”

Replays showed Myles led with his head in the Hayne tackle in the 25th minute.

Blues halfback Mitchell Pearce told Klein: “Leading with his head.”

Asked after the game did Gallen make a stand, Daley said: “One-hundred per cent. I wouldn’t expect too much (action against Gallen).

“It was a tough, brutal game. I would be disappointed if anything came of it.”

Queensland coach Mal Meninga seemed unconcerned by the incident. Asked what action should be taken, Meninga said: “That is a decision for the adjudicators. It’s Origin football. We are comfortable with any decision. In a normal game he may have got 10 minutes in the sin-bin.”

There is no doubt Myles annoys NSW with his controversial tackling technique.

North Queensland forward Tariq Sims tweeted: “Gal, that’s passion right there!”

Mark Geyer, the NSW legend, tweeted: ‘It’s not a club game boys … it’s Origin!”

Raiders winger Sandor Earl tweeted: “Yesss Gal.”

The sell-out crowd cheered when a replay on the big screen showed Gallen landing blows on Myles.

Daley had no intention of resting Gallen after the incident. The Sharks legend led NSW straight back on to the field after halftime.

Gallen remained fresh during the opening half by playing in two stints. Daley rested Gallen – usually an 80-minute player – after only 16 minutes.

Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan welcome baby.
JUNE 2, 2013 AT 9:50AM

Add Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan-Tatum to the list of hot Hollywood parents! The couple welcomed their first child together in London on Thursday, May 30, Us Weekly can exclusively confirm. The bundle of joy’s gender is not yet known.

Tatum, 33, and Dewan-Tatum, 32, announced they were expecting their first child in December. The couple met on the set of Step Up in 2006, and tied the knot in July 2009.

Throughout the pregnancy, the parents-to-be maintained their busy work schedules. “We’re going to actually have the baby in London while I’m shooting, and then there will be no downtime whatsoever after that,” Tatum told Ryan Seacrest in an interview about filming Jupiter Ascending in the UK.

Production of Tatum’s new film is set to move to Chicago in July, and his wife will begin work on her fall Lifetime series, Witches of East End, in Vancouver around the same time.

“The baby will get top billing as far as priorities go,” a source tells Us. “Channing is going to be the most adorable hands-on daddy ever and do whatever is necessary to make sure Jenna can balance it all.”

Dr. Irwin Goldstein founded <a href='http://www.sandiegosexualmedicine.com/' target='_blank'>San Diego Sexual Medicine</a> in 2007. The 6,000-square-foot facility has a sex therapist, a physical therapist and a full clinical research facility where scientists study sexual dysfunction."I am living my dream right now," he said.

7:56 AM EDT            Saturday June 1, 2013

Dr. Irwin Goldstein isn’t squeamish about describing operations on private parts. He remembers, for instance, that he performed his first penile implant on a patient in 1976. “I just did one yesterday,” he added.

Goldstein, 63, director of San Diego Sexual Medicine and director of sexual medicine at Alvarado Hospital, has had a long career providing medical help to those with sexual problems. He has worked on understanding the physiology of the male erection, and has played key roles in the development of drugs for both male and female sexual dysfunction.

“If there’s anyone who had put sexual medicine on the map in the last decade, it was Irwin Goldstein,” said Abdulmaged Traish, professor of biochemistry at Boston University School of Medicine, who worked with Goldstein for 20 years.

During his career, Goldstein has treated many patients for problems that used to be poorly understood and highly stigmatized — though much work remains, both in conducting research and removing shame.

“Helping people, now both men and women, with getting their sexual lives in order, and getting that joy from them — smiling and hugging their partner — there’s nothing like this field,” Goldstein said. “It’s truly the most amazing experience to be involved in all of this.”

Beginnings

Goldstein was recruited to play hockey at Brown University, and stayed on the ice all four years while studying electrical and biomedical engineering. He met his wife there, and she followed him to Montreal, where he attended medical school at McGill University.

In one of his rotations, he remembers a patient coming into the operating room with urinary retention, screaming in pain. The doctor called for the “urology consults,” and a happy-looking group of experts came to assure the patient that they would relieve his pain using a catheter. The procedure was successful, and convinced Goldstein that he wanted to become a urologist.

“You can actually have fun and take care of people and do procedures — it seemed like what I wanted to do,” Goldstein said.

He moved to Boston University School of Medicine and, in the 1970s, met his mentor, Dr. Robert Krane. Krane had just learned how to perform surgery on men with erectile dysfunction, using a silicon implant.

“The word ‘impotence’ wasn’t widely used. It was really a (psychological) thing at the time,” Goldstein said. “Medical doctors didn’t get much involved. There wasn’t really thought to be an organic, physiologic basis for this.”

Before learning about the penile implant, Goldstein had no intention of going into sexual medicine. But seeing patients’ angst, humiliation and frustration before the procedure, and their happiness afterward — in addition to their partners’ glee — made Goldstein see sexual medicine as an exciting field.

Goldstein has always been “wide-eyed” and “fascinated” with his interests, said his wife, Sue Goldstein, program coordinator for San Diego Sexual Medicine.

“I fell in love with the little boy in him,” she said. The couple has three children.

Rising prospects

Sexual medicine, meanwhile, continued to emerge as a field during the 1970s.

In 1973, a Czech doctor named Dr. Vaclav Michal first described a procedure for treating erectile dysfunction. It involved taking a stomach artery that fed the abdominal muscle, harvesting it, repositioning it to the base of the penis and connecting it through a penile artery. Unlike the penile implant, the procedure did not involve a prosthetic device.

Michal taught Goldstein how to do this procedure when he visited the United States in 1983.

“The penile bypass surgery was something that has really sort of enlightened me, and I’ve taken real fascination with, and I’ve now done 1,500 of these procedures,” Goldstein said.

It’s not just for aging men who are have trouble getting erections. Goldstein has seen many young, otherwise healthy patients injured in sports such as as cycling. He recently saw the condition in a 23-year-old patient who fell on his crotch while skiing.

By the 1980s, for the first time in history, an injectable drug became available to help men have erections, giving them a pharmacological solution to erectile dysfunction. In addition, when patients came to Goldstein for testing, they could be studied in the erect state.

“It opened up Pandora’s box in the context of, we now had therapy, we now had diagnostic information, we can now better understand the process of penile erection and its complexity,” Goldstein said.

What’s in an erection

International meetings began to take place to discuss such advances. Goldstein and Krane held such a meeting in 1988, calling themselves the International Society for Sexual Medicine. The organization then started a journal, the Journal of Sexual Medicine. Goldstein became editor in 2003, a position he still holds.

Goldstein took a truly interdisciplinary approach to the subject of sexual medicine, bringing together clinicians and molecular biologists, Traish said. Beyond sex therapy, said Traish, Goldstein wanted, “research, research, research.”

When Goldstein first became interested in sexual medicine, the medical field’s understanding of the erection was primitive. He and colleagues wanted to know: What was the chemical responsible for the erection?

The answer: Nitric oxide. It’s a gas that sounds a lot more sterile than sexy, but it’s the biochemistry of an erection — the chemical is released when a man is sexually stimulated.

In 1991, Goldstein and colleagues published a study in the Journal of Clinical Investigation showing the role of nitric oxide in the erect penis. Independent groups followed with more studies showing the same thing.

This insight led eventually to the advent of Viagra as a drug for erectile dysfunction.

“Viagra takes the fact that when you sexually stimulate, you release nitric oxide, and then downstream, if you block a specific enzyme, you can encourage the same sort of response that you would get with the injection of the drug” that came out in the early 1980s, Goldstein said.

The ‘nuclear bomb of sexual medicine’

Injections and penile implants were available, but few men were taking advantage of them, Goldstein recounted. A safe, effective pill would be a total game-changer, he thought.

This came in the form of a drug called sildenafil citrate, originally studied for high blood pressure and angina, or chest pain. It turned out the drug, invented by British Pfizer scientists Peter Dunn and Albert Wood in 1989, wasn’t successful as a heart medicine, but clinical trial participants reported increasing erections. The patent was filed in 1994.

Goldstein and others, meanwhile, were refining their understanding of the physiology of the erection. They became involved in testing the drug as a treatment for erectile dysfunction. Goldstein was the lead author of a New England Journal of Medicine paper that introduced the drug to the rest of the world — first marketed as Viagra (there are now other versions available).

Viagra was probably “the nuclear bomb of sexual medicine,” Goldstein said. It was the first time there was a noninvasive solution to impotence, which had been thought of for so long as an inevitable part of aging.

“This was more or less the dream of humankind from caveman forward,” he said.

What about women?

Goldstein began to receive “gazillions of calls” about getting Viagra. Surprisingly, however, the majority of calls were from women who wanted help with their own problems: lack of arousal, vaginal dryness, inability to have an orgasm, pain during intercourse.

Initially, Goldstein told them to call their gynecologists, believing that the field of gynecology was studying how to treat sexual dysfunction in women the way urology was in men.

But many women called back and told him this was not the case.

In 1998, Goldstein and colleagues opened up their sexual medicine clinic to women. “We became overwhelmed,” he said. They also started a women’s sexual health society, which became part of the Journal of Sexual Medicine as well.

There is no drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of female sexual dysfunction. A 2008 study found that women taking antidepressant medications called serotonin reuptake inhibitors saw some benefit from Viagra, but these findings have not been shown in the general population.

Women may soon have options, however. Goldstein has been collaborating on the trials for flibanserin, a drug studied for hypoactive sexual desire disorder. Like Viagra, it originally had a different target: depression, but was found to be more effective as a treatment for sexual dysfunction.

In March, a new drug application was submitted to the FDA; the agency has until September to make a decision, Goldstein said. (There are other competing treatments for low female sex drive in the works: Drugs similar to each other called Lybrido and Lybridos, a gel called LibiGel, and a drug called Bremelanotide.)

“2013 is the year of the woman,” he said.

A field of its own

Goldstein moved from Boston to San Diego in 2007 to establish San Diego Sexual Medicine, a 6,000-square-foot facility with a sex therapist, physical therapist and a full clinical research facility where scientists study sexual dysfunction. He didn’t want it to be part of a urology department; he believed it deserved its own distinction.

“We believe that sexual medicine is an equal form of medicine,” he said. “We study and diagnose and treat as you would an arm, a leg, a liver, a kidney, a spleen, a pancreas — we are just upfront with it.”

You can also buy sex toys and aids at Goldstein’s facility. He compares these tools to hearing aids for people with hearing problems, as they are strategies for “a more meaningful, full experience.”

Many medical school students never learn how to treat sexual problems, he said, and plenty of doctors don’t want to touch the subject, either. Goldstein now teaches students in each year of medical school.

Recently, he recounted, a patient told him when she complained to her doctor about pain during sex, she was told, “go on vacation, have a glass of wine. It will definitely work for you.” The woman said she received no evaluation or exam, and left the doctor’s office in tears.

There’s an important distinction, Goldstein said, between sexual medicine and other fields: It’s left up to an individual whether a “condition” is actually a “problem.” Goldstein and colleagues don’t impose their view of an ideal world on patients — that everyone should have sex every day, for instance.

If people have sexual dysfunction but don’t want to pursue treatment, and are content otherwise — perhaps by pursuing hobbies, holding hands with a spouse and playing with grandchildren — that’s fine by Goldstein.

On the other hand, if a person is bothered or distressed by a sexual problem, Goldstein is happy to help.

“My nametag says ‘Irwin Goldstein, physician,'” he said. “It says ‘sexual medicine.’ I am living my dream right now.”

Denis Hart
June 02, 2013         12:00AM

EXCLUSIVE: ARCHBISHOP Denis Hart says he feels personally shamed and burdened over the Catholic Church’s handling of child sexual abuse.

The state’s most senior Catholic said in a frank interview his faith had been tested, but had not wavered, in the wake of shocking revelations of decades-long child abuse within the church.

He is now vowing to do whatever it takes to tackle the evil scourge.

The Archbishop said he was horrified to learn of the widespread extent of the clergy abuse crisis after becoming vicar general in 1996 when he realised his predecessors had systematically protected paedophiles.

In his most wide-ranging interview since giving evidence at the Victorian parliamentary inquiry – in which he conceded sexual attacks were covered up and the church’s reputation was put ahead of victims – Archbishop Hart said he:

TOOK responsibility for the church’s handling of abuse complaints

FELT betrayed and let down by members of the church who had abused children and by those who had covered up their “heinous crimes”

COULD have better responded personally to the abuse crisis

BELIEVED the church had a responsibility to better reach out to victims, and

RULED out ever advocating for priests to reveal secrets of the confessional.

“I feel the burden that members of the church have offended and that the church hasn’t responded quickly enough or adequately,” he said.

“I would have hoped that I may have been able to respond better, in a way that may have helped people.”

As a 15-year-old student at Xavier College planning a life in the priesthood, a young Denis Hart didn’t know of the sexual abuse crisis within the church.

Now as the leader of Melbourne’s 1.1 million Catholics, in Australia’s biggest diocese, Archbishop Hart says he feels let down by fellow clergy who breached their sacred trust.

“I feel very sad. I feel very hurt. I do feel very betrayed,” he said.

“I do feel that this is an important thing that we have to learn from, and to grow from, so that this will never happen again.”

Archbishop Hart, the president of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference, said he couldn’t understand the evils committed by clergy against vulnerable children.

“Every time I hear of abuse of a child it’s a shocking revelation. I can’t understand how any person could abuse a child,” he said.

“It’s wrong. It’s a heinous crime. It’s an issue that society’s got to grapple with and resolve … so that the safety of our children can be assured.”

Archbishop Hart said he first learned of the horrors of the abuse crisis after becoming vicar general in 1996, working alongside the then newly appointed archbishop of Melbourne, George Pell.

He said he realised the problem had been swept under the carpet by his predecessors, including former archbishop Frank Little who he conceded kept few, if any, records of complaints and moved at least one paedophile priest to a new parish and into the lives of innocent children.

“I was definitely shocked to see the extent and the nature of these awful crimes,” Archbishop Hart said.

“That, of course, was an awful realisation of what had been going on for quite some long time. It needed emergency activity.

“We did inherit a situation where … we inherited great difficulties”.

Together with archbishop Pell, and in consultation with Victoria Police, Archbishop Hart formulated the Melbourne Response to deal with the allegations.

It has been the subject of much criticism, but Archbishop Hart stands by the model and has denied suggestions victims were encouraged not to report allegations to police.

“It’s an effort by us to try and walk with those who have suffered and to try, through the help of skilled people, to bring them through to some kind of peace,” he said.

“I’ve made apologies to every victim who’s had a complaint, but apologies are not enough. Actions speak louder than words.

“When I took over from archbishop Pell, I renewed my determination to really go forward and to address the matters and to try and bring compassionate responses.”

The Archbishop said it was his belief in the goodness of people that inspired him and gave him faith in the church’s darkest hour.

“The thing that sustains me is my faith in God and in God’s love for me and for people. That doesn’t waiver,” he said.

“I am challenged by people who do evil, but I want to try and lead the whole community to work through this issue so that evil, that awful evil, will be prevented, and so that the welfare of those who have suffered so much will be promoted, and they’ll be helped.”

Archbishop Hart said while these were difficult times for Catholics, it was a good opportunity for the church to examine itself and change the way men were trained for the priesthood.

“I’m certainly confident that we’re so determined to address these matters, I think we can have a much greater certitude that our priests, our parish workers, our volunteers will act professionally because we have not only protocols, but people are much more alert of these possible evils.”

He said he had also been inspired by an increase in men applying to become priests and the work being done around the diocese’s parishes, schools, hospitals and aged-care homes. “There is another side.

“It’s not to play down, or not to minimise this awful, awful tragedy and this awful, awful crime, but it’s to say that the church is there for the long haul and we are determined to do the things that we do well and to make the contributions that we do to the world, and to redouble our efforts because of this dark side.

“The church has been around for 2000 years and we have faced many challenges. We are totally committed to seeing this through.

“We have made tremendous efforts. When I think where we might have been years ago … I think we’re light years further forward.

“There still remains a lot to be done”.

abc alex jackson mi 130531 wblog Man Slapped with Second Degree Murder Charge in Fatal Pit Bull Mauling

May 31, 2013           6:00am

Prosecutors in Los Angeles are looking to throw the book at a man whose pack of dogs mauled a jogger to death. Today, he was charged with second-degree murder.

During a hearing today, Alex Donald Jackson sat behind a plexiglass wall while being arraigned in a Los Angeles County court.

The 29-year-old’s pit bulls allegedly were responsible for the fatal mauling of 63-year-old Pamela Devitt on May 9. Devitt was out for a jog near Jackson’s house in the Mojave Desert when she was attacked.

“It is kind of a unique situation,” Prosecutor Samantha MacDonald said today. “I don’t know that it’s been done very often. We’re just going to try to prosecute it to the full extent of the law, and I think that the evidence will speak for itself.”

MacDonald said officials decided to charge Jackson with second-degree murder, but she wouldn’t explain why. She told reporters that because it was an open case she could not reveal further information about the case against Jackson.

An L.A. County judge told Jackson today that he had a right to a preliminary hearing within 10 days. His attorney, Robert Chu, of the L.A. County Public Defender’s Office, told the court that he will need more time to review the case.

Jackson’s next hearing was scheduled for June 14. He’s being held on $1,000,050 bail.

Chu did not immediately return calls from ABCNews.com for comment.

Jackson was arrested Thursday morning after DNA tests on his dogs showed blood on their muzzles and coats matched that of Devitt.  If convicted, he could face life in prison, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

An autopsy revealed that Devitt had died of blood loss attributed to sharp-force trauma. She sustained approximately 150 to 200 puncture wounds, John Corina of  the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Division told ABCNews.com.

When an officer arrived at the scene, one of the dogs was still mauling Devitt, Corina said. The deputy approached, and the dog ran off but soon turned around and came at the officer, he added. The deputy fired a shot and the dog ran off again, only to turn around a moment later and come at the officer a second time, according to Corina, who added the dog took off again after the officer fired a second shot.

The fence around Jackson’s property was only three to four feet high, Corina said, and the dogs could easily hop over it. He said that police found other people who had similar stories about the dogs attacking people.

Corina said that the dogs, which appeared to be of varying ages, were all fully grown. He said that they were with the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Control, and would likely be euthanized.

Adam Levine is dating a SI model and is the latest “50 Shades of Grey” movie favorite. According to a May 28 report by the Daily News, the Maroon 5 front man is dating Sports Illustrated model Nina Agdal. On the same day, EnStarz reported that Levine’s fans think that he’s hot enough to play Christian Grey. So could life get any better for the singer?

Levine previously dated Victoria’s Secret models Behati Prinsloo and Anne Vyalitsyna, but perhaps he grew tired of those pesky angel wings — all SI model Nina Agdal needs to turn heads is a teeny string bikini. Nina seems like a really great catch, because she was kind enough to fill in when fellow model Kate Upton couldn’t grant a teen’s wishes by attending prom with him.

And in other Adam Levine news, the music video for Maroon 5’s song “Love Somebody” has the singer’s fans salivating over the thought of seeing him cast in the “50 Shades of Grey” movie. The video features Adam showing off his toned bod as he gets covered in gray paint, so it’s not hard to see why the video is making some viewers think about Christian Grey.

So would Adam be up to the job? His fans could generate enough buzz to catch the attention of the movie’s producers, but it’s hard to imagine the singer scoring an audition since he just doesn’t look right for the role. He’s a handsome guy, but he looks nothing like fan favorites Ian Somerhalder, Matt Bomer, and Henry Cavill.

Adam also hasn’t done much acting, but his scenes in “American Horror Story: Asylum” are very “50 Shades of Grey”-like. The actor and Channing Tatum’s gorgeous wife, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, played a kinky couple who broke into an abandoned asylum to have sex. Adam’s character bound Jenna’s character to a bed before they got it on, so he does have a little experience with BDSM and sex scenes. He’s also gets intimate with beautiful women in most of his music videos.

And who knows? Maybe SI model Nina Agdal could score an audition if she’s dating the future Christian Grey. She’s the right age to play Christian’s sex slave named Anastasia Steele, and she has plenty of experience showing skin. Nina also hasn’t done a lot of acting, but she did heat up the small screen by biting into a burger for a sexy Carl’s Jr. commercial.

A man shot and killed his adult daughter in a Central California home with her three young children inside, also shooting and wounding another daughter before apparently turning the gun on himself, authorities said.

Jennifer Kimble, 37, was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds by deputies responding to a call from her 8-year-old daughter, the Tulare County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement. Kimble’s two sons, ages 13 and 11, were also in the house, but all three kids were unharmed.

Deputies also found Kimble’s father Anthony Alvarez, 63, dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, sheriff’s officials said.

Another daughter, Valerie Alvarez, 33, had at least one gunshot wound and was flown to a Fresno hospital in critical condition. She was stabilized and having surgery, sheriff’s spokeswoman Sgt. Chris Douglass said.

The investigation was continuing and autopsies were planned later in the week.

Douglass said investigators did not doubt that Anthony Alvarez had shot his daughters and turned the gun on himself.

“It’s a very cut-and-dried case,” she said.

No information was released on a possible motive.

The children were reunited with their father, who was at work during the shootings, authorities said.

The shootings occurred on a residential street of small stucco homes in Orosi, a town of about 9,000 people in California’s Central Valley about 20 miles southeast of Fresno.

Kimble worked in the cafeteria of an elementary school one street over from the house and was a dedicated, caring employee, according to her supervisor there.

“I’m just as surprised as anyone else right now,” Brenda Lightfoot-Handy, director of food services at Palm Elementary, told the Fresno Bee. “I’m just trying to process this.

SMARTLY dressed with his arm around his father’s shoulder, toddler Taha Fiazi looks curiously at the camera for a final portrait before his family were to board a boat for Australia.

Taha, his father Ezatullah and mother Hakima Abasi left Indonesia last August full of hope for a new life free of the persecution they faced as Afghan Hazaras.

Instead, they vanished.

They are among whole families, groups of cousins, fathers, who have boarded boats and never been seen again and children who have disappeared in the dangerous waters between Indonesia and Christmas Island and whose mothers are now in limbo between hope and grief.

Photographs of the lost in happier times are now contrasted by accounts from their families of life racked by uncertainty, often without a breadwinner.

Their stories are the true toll of the crisis at Australia’s borders with at least four boats, carrying almost 300 people vanishing and hundreds of other asylum seekers are known to have drowned in the past four years.

The Hazara community in Australia is using a Facebook page to plead for information about 40 of the missing.

Little Taha’s family are devastated that the inquisitive boy and his parents have been lost at sea.

“He (Ezatullah) was a very good person, he was a labourer and hard worker, he was a family man,” Taha’s uncle Avazali Etemadi said through an interpreter from Iran.

“They were ordinary people.

“The main reason that he fled from Iran…is his ethnic group is Hazara, they are the target of attacks.”

His wife Zahra Abasi, Hakima’s sister, had trouble coping, he said.

“I put his last photo on Facebook so if there is any news for them from anywhere they can tell me,” he said.

Syed Mushahid Hussain could be any 18-year-old, anywhere in the world.

The photograph his brother has used in a search shows him sporting white earphones with a stylish black suit jacket slung over one shoulder.

His brother Shafiq said the teenager had gone to Indonesia with friends and a cousin in a bid to reach Australia, a decision his family still does not understand.

“It is very, very hard. I can’t tell you how difficult,” Shafiq said.

“There is no information. My mother, my father, everyone is very, very worried.”

Syed Mustafa, 23, called his family in Quetta, Pakistan, where Hazaras are routinely attacked, at 2am in December 2011 to tell his family he was boarding a boat headed for Australia.

It was the last they heard from him, his vessel later sank.

“The boat was overloaded. We are still hoping that he is alive,” his sister Shanaz said.

“My mother is basically really worried about him and hopes he is alive.”

Sayed Murtaza’s 21-year-old brother Sayed Asif and his neighbour Mohammad Mohsin vanished after their asylum vessel sank in December 2011.

“They are all jobless, they don’t have any work, they don’t have any money,” Mr Murtaza said of his neighbour’s wife and children.

There are two toddlers without their father in Quetta.

Abbas, also known as Mossa, left his wife and two young children behind last year after he was threatened with death, friend Madi said.

“He is missing, we don’t know about him anymore, it is very difficult for his wife, she didn’t have anyone to support her, she didn’t have any way to find her husband,” he said.

Father of two teenage daughters and two sons, Ramazan Ali stared seriously into the camera lens for a portrait in August last year.

He has been missing since his asylum boat sank near Indonesia last month, with only 14 survivors out of 70 who were on board found.

His family would rather believe he was in jail in Indonesia for trying to leave by boat, than think he is dead, nephew Shukrullah Rajai said.

“His family think Ramazan will be all right,” he said.

Mr Rajai said in Quetta the Hazara family faced “bombings and targeted killing.”

Mohamed Hatif, a refugee living in Adelaide, has been trying to find his friend Amin so that his wife in Quetta can have certainty about his fate.

“Amin’s wife doesn’t know if he is dead. She says `maybe Amin is on an island,”‘ he said.

Arif Hazara, 18, who is studying for his Year 12 exams at a Melbourne school started the Hazara community Facebook page to connect people but as the toll at sea mounted he began posting pictures from families desperate for news.

Having left his own parents and four siblings behind he suddenly found himself trying to help connect other families with their lost loved ones, despite little hope any of the missing will be found alive.

Arif and a group of friends spent eight “very scary” days on an asylum boat crammed with 52 asylum seekers with the perilous journey made worse when the engine broke down.

He was found by Australian authorities to be a refugee.

“There are hundreds of families who have had their relatives or their father or mother or sister on the boats and they have never heard of them,” Arif said.

“We have reports of boats lost.

“They have perished and the families or the kin who are left in Quetta, they still believe they might be alive somewhere.”

PHOTO: Jodi Arias

May 24, 2013

The man in charge of the jury that convicted Jodi Arias of murder but could not reach agreement on whether her life should be spared described the process as “gut-wrenching” and said he and his fellow jurors struggled to contain their emotions.

“We couldn’t allow ourselves to be emotional on the stand,” jury foreman William Zervakos said today on “Good Morning America.” “We couldn’t allow ourselves to show emotion [but] it was a different story when we got back into the jury room.”

Some of the most emotional moments during the five-month trial came over the 18 days when Arias, 32, took the stand and described her relationship with Travis Alexander, the ex-boyfriend whom she was convicted last week of stabbing and shooting to death in 2008.

Arias pled for her life also during the sentencing phase of the trial, but Zervakos says her long stint on the stand didn’t help her case, especially when she was cross-examined by the prosecutor.

“I think 18 days hurt her. I think she was not a good witness…I think the way the prosecutor was with her, he’s known for an aggressive style. I think it’d be difficult for anybody,” Zervakos said. “I don’t think I want to sit on the stand for 18 days.

“We’re charged with going in presuming innocence, right, but she was on the stand for so long. I don’t think it did her any good,” Zervakos added. “There were so many contradicting stories.”

Arias had been branded a liar by the prosecution because she initially denied killing Alexander, then claimed two years later that she killed him in self-defense, citing Alexander’s physical and emotional abuse.

Zervakos, for one, believed Arias’ story that she was abused in the relationship, but not that she killed Alexander in self-defense.

“I’m very sure in my own mind that she was mentally and verbally abused,” he said. “Now is that an excuse? Of course not. Does it factor into the decisions that we make? It has to.”

Arias’ appearance – from her blonde bombshell look while she was dating Alexander, to the more subdued look she presented in the courtroom with glasses, bangs and dark hair – that captivated the media and the public throughout the trial, seemed to captivate the jurors inside the courtroom as well.

“When I looked in the courtroom for the first time and looked who the defendant was, it’s hard to put that in perspective when you look at a young woman and think of the crime and then think of the brutality of the crime,” Zervakos said. “It just doesn’t wash so it’s very difficult to divest yourself from the personal, from the emotional part of it.”

After the jury’s hung verdict was read Thursday, leaving the case still open, one juror mouthed, “I’m so sorry,” toward Alexander’s family and prosecutors.

Zervakos says he and other jurors struggled greatly with seeing Alexander’s family every day in the courtroom.

“Until you’re face-to-face with people that have gone through something like that, it’s something you really can’t put into words,” he said on “GMA.” “I’m six feet away from somebody talking about a horrendous loss. If you can’t feel that, then you have no emotion, no soul.”

Arias’ fate is now left up to the prosecutor, who will decide whether to retry the penalty phase. If he decides to try again for the death penalty, a new jury will be selected and both the prosecution and defense will present evidence and arguments over what sentence Arias should receive.

The retrial, in which Arias can either be sentenced to death or to life in prison, with or without the possibility of parole, would begin July 18.

The prosecutor’s office has not yet decided what it plans to do.

A GP who used a secret camera inside his watch to record himself abusing female patients has been jailed for 12 years.

Family doctor Davinder Jeet Bains, 46, worked in Royal Wootton Bassett, near Swindon, and used his job to assault more than two dozen women.

He filmed the attacks on his four gigabyte watch, which has been compared to something out of a James Bond film.

In all, he admitted a total of 39 charges: 13 of assault by penetration, 13 of voyeurism, 11 of sexual assault and two of sexual activity with a child.

He also asked for a further 65 offences – 10 of sexual assault by penetration, eight of sexual assault and 47 of voyeurism – to be taken into account when the judge passed sentence.

Bains, of Nyland Road, Swindon, committed offences against 27 women – aged from 15 to 51 – between July 2010 and May 2012.

The police investigation began after a 17-year-old student told officers that Bains had plied her with alcohol and sexually assaulted her.

Bains was wearing the watch when detectives arrested him at the Tinkers Lane Surgery. They later recovered 350 high-quality video clips from the watch and his home computer.

When officers later showed Bains some of the footage he had recorded, he deliberately shut his eyes because it was “dull”.

Judge Douglas Field called him a “disgrace to the medical profession” and said the recording of the offences was an aggravating factor.

“The videos were taken by you using a specially constructed watch to record the intimate examination of these woman and girls – no doubt for your later sexual gratification,” said the judge.

“You disregarded the welfare of these women and girls to commit these offences to satisfy your own perverted sexual appetite.”

Bains was put on the Sex Offenders’ Register and given an order banning him from possessing any device that can store or record videos.

He was also banned from having contact with girls under 16.

The court heard that two victims had previously complained to the managers at Tinkers Lane surgery – but no action was taken.

Detective Inspector Mark Garrett, head of Swindon CID, admitted: “That was a frustration in the investigation. The surgery had been informed before the police got involved.”

Dr Liz Mearns, speaking on behalf of NHS England, apologised to the victims and said she was “horrified” by the crimes.

She said changes had been implemented to protect patients and that an independent investigation had been commissioned to look at the case.

A restaurant patron was arrested over the weekend after he refused to pay for his $46 squid and steak dinner that he claimed was “too rare,” and then assaulted workers who tried to stop him from fleeing, police said.

Joseph Lee was taken into custody about 8:50 p.m. Saturday on suspicion of assault and refusing to pay for his dinner at Zono Sushi in Glendale, according to local police.

Most of the incident was recorded on the server’s cellphone, police added.

Before Lee was released Sunday on $60,000 bail, he reportedly told police he was a first-time customer at the restaurant in the 100 block of North Maryland and was dissatisfied with his meal.

After eating most of it, Lee allegedly tried to leave without settling his bill, setting off a chain of events that started with a female server getting an elbow to her stomach.

The restaurant’s owner and another employee told police they were nearly run over by Lee as he tried to flee in his Volkswagen. One of them even had to hold on to the roof and driver’s-side door to keep from being swept out as he reversed, according to police.

Lee eventually accelerated forward and fled the scene, police said. After he was tracked down and arrested, he reportedly told officers he fled because he felt uncomfortable with the restaurant owner and employee standing near his car, police said.

The restaurant owner and employees declined medical treatment.

Hamilton police announced the arrest of Mark Smich, 25, in Oakville, Ont., just as the memorial service for Tim Bosma ended on Wednesday in Hamilton.

May 23, 2013             6:29 AM ET

Mark Smich of Oakville, Ont., today became the second person formally charged with first-degree murder in the death of Tim Bosma, the Hamilton man who disappeared earlier this month after taking two men on a test drive of his truck.

CBC’s Adam Carter, who was in the Hamilton courtroom Thursday morning as Smich was charged, reported that Smich appeared to be nervous and said little during his appearance. He was wearing baggy pants and a baggy T-shirt, and had a shaved head.

Smich’s lawyer, Thomas Dungey, said his client will plead not guilty. “We will be defending the case vigorously,” Dungey said.

Smich, 25, was arrested in Oakville on Wednesday morning, about an hour before the start of a memorial service for Bosma in Hamilton.

Smich arrived in court just after 8 a.m. ET Thursday in Hamilton, reported CBC’s Marivel Taruc on Twitter:

Bosma went missing while on the test drive with the two men, who had answered an online ad. His remains were found earlier this month, burned beyond recognition, at a farm belonging to Millard, of Toronto..

Both Smich and Millard are next expected to appear in court on June 13.

Police still don’t have a motive for the killing.

Millard, 27, also faces charges of forcible confinement and theft of a vehicle. His lawyer has said his client will plead not guilty.

Police allege the suspects are the two men who Bosma took for the test drive. The search continues for at least one other suspect.

News of a second arrest, of Smich, came just minutes after the public memorial service for Bosma ended Wednesday.

Smich was arrested while walking near Dorval Drive and Wyecroft Road in Oakville, less than one kilometre from his home.

Court records show Smich has several criminal convictions, including possession for the purpose of trafficking in 2006 and impaired driving in 2010. He is also scheduled to appear in court on a charge of mischief next month.

‘Really scary’

Shortly after Smich’s arrest, police moved in on a home in Oakville owned by Maria Smich-Grygorcewicz on Montrose Abbey Drive. Hamilton police confirmed the search at that address was related to the Bosma case.

Neighbours told CBC News in Hamilton that police arrived at the Smich home at about 9 a.m. Officers were still at the house in the afternoon.

Tactical officers and plainclothes police were seen coming and going from the home, and gathered around vehicles outside. A neighbour reported seeing officers with guns drawn on the street.

The Hamilton police forensics van was also at the house, along with another van. Neighbours said they had not seen any police activity prior to today. The home is a detached two-door garage home. The current residents bought the home about 10 years ago.

Stefania Capelo, who lives across the street, said she saw police crews investigate the home mid-morning on Wednesday.

“It was a really surreal thing. It happened very quickly and I just kind of watched from my front door. It wasn’t a big show, if that’s what you’re asking.”

Capelo, 34, said she doesn’t know the individuals who live at the house.

“I just thought the house was rented, and I’ve always seen people come and go from there. I don’t know them at all.”

The current tenants, she added, appear to be young men in their 20s.

“They are friends. They kind of hang out on the veranda. Things that young 20-year-olds would do.”

She described her street as quiet, suburban and filled with young families.

“It’s really scary that something like this would happen in this neighbourhood.”

Smich’s father ‘shocked’

CBC News reached Andrew Smich, Mark’s father, on Wednesday afternoon.

“What can I say? I’m shocked,” he said of his son’s arrest, his voice trembling.

Andrew Smich said he last saw his son on Sunday, as the family gathered for the wedding of his daughter — Mark’s sister.

“He was normal,” he said of his son’s behaviour at the event. “I didn’t see any change, any difference.”

When asked if he knew whether Mark had associated with Dellen Millard, Smich responded, “Absolutely not.”

“He’s not living with me. He’s living with his mother in Oakville.”

Smich said he wouldn’t answer further questions, including ones about whether his son had ever been in trouble with the law.

“I’m not ready to talk.”

A man accused of chaining a teenager and sexually assaulting him last fall at a home in rural Nova Scotia has pleaded guilty to some of the charges against him.

David James Leblanc, who appeared in Nova Scotia Supreme Court in Bridgewater on Thursday morning, entered guilty pleas to eight of 16 charges in two separate cases.

Leblanc originally faced seven charges in the case of a teen who was confined at a home in Upper Chelsea, including sexual assault, sexual assault causing bodily harm, forcible confinement, uttering a death threat, kidnapping, administering a noxious substance with intent to cause bodily harm, and breach of conditions.

He pleaded guilty to five of those charges and two were withdrawn.

Leblanc also entered three guilty pleas in an unrelated case in which he sexually assaulted two boys — aged five and two — took photos of them and posted them online.

He will be sentenced on June 14.

05/22/13           06:08 PM ET EDT

In a medical first, doctors used plastic particles and a 3-D laser printer to create an airway splint to save the life of a baby boy who used to stop breathing nearly every day.

It’s the latest advance from the booming field of regenerative medicine, making body parts in the lab.

In the case of Kaiba (KEYE’-buh) Gionfriddo, doctors didn’t have a moment to spare. Because of a birth defect, the little Ohio boy’s airway kept collapsing, causing his breathing to stop and often his heart, too. Doctors in Michigan had been researching artificial airway splints but had not implanted one in a patient yet.

In a single day, they “printed out” 100 tiny tubes, using computer-guided lasers to stack and fuse thin layers of plastic instead of paper and ink to form various shapes and sizes. The next day, with special permission from the Food and Drug Administration, they implanted one of these tubes in Kaiba, the first time this has been done.

Suddenly, a baby that doctors had said would probably not leave the hospital alive could breathe normally for the first time. He was 3 months old when the operation was done last year and is nearly 19 months old now. He is about to have his tracheotomy tube removed; it was placed when he was a couple months old and needed a breathing machine. And he has not had a single breathing crisis since coming home a year ago.

“He’s a pretty healthy kid right now,” said Dr. Glenn Green, a pediatric ear, nose and throat specialist at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where the operation was done. It’s described in Thursday’s New England Journal of Medicine.

Independent experts praised the work and the potential for 3-D printing to create more body parts to solve unmet medical needs.

“It’s the wave of the future,” said Dr. Robert Weatherly, a pediatric specialist at the University of Missouri in Kansas City. “I’m impressed by what they were able to accomplish.”

So far, only a few adults have had trachea, or windpipe transplants, usually to replace ones destroyed by cancer. The windpipes came from dead donors or were lab-made, sometimes using stem cells. Last month, a 2-year-old girl born without a windpipe received one grown from her own stem cells onto a plastic scaffold at a hospital in Peoria, Ill.

Kaiba had a different problem – an incompletely formed bronchus, one of the two airways that branch off the windpipe like pant legs to the lungs. About 2,000 babies are born with such defects each year in the United States and most outgrow them by age 2 or 3, as more tissue develops.

In severe cases, parents learn of the defect when the child suddenly stops breathing and dies. That almost happened when Kaiba was 6 weeks old at a restaurant with his parents, April and Bryan Gionfriddo, who live in Youngstown, in northeast Ohio.

“He turned blue and stopped breathing on us,” and his father did CPR to revive him, April Gionfriddo said.

More episodes followed, and Kaiba had to go on a breathing machine when he was 2 months old. Doctors told the couple his condition was grave.

“Quite a few of them said he had a good chance of not leaving the hospital alive. It was pretty scary,” his mother said. “We pretty much prayed every night, hoping that he would pull through.”

Then a doctor at Akron Children’s Hospital, Marc Nelson, suggested the experimental work in Michigan. Researchers there were testing airway splints made from biodegradable polyester that is sometimes used to repair bone and cartilage.

Kaiba had the operation on Feb. 9, 2012. The splint was placed around his defective bronchus, which was stitched to the splint to keep it from collapsing. The splint has a slit along its length so it can expand and grow as the child does – something a permanent, artificial implant could not do.

The plastic is designed to degrade and gradually be absorbed by the body over three years, as healthy tissue forms to replace it, said the biomedical engineer who led the work, Scott Hollister.

Green and Scott Hollister have a patent pending on the device and Hollister has a financial interest in a company that makes scaffolds for implants.

Dr. John Bent, a pediatric specialist at New York’s Albert Einstein College of Medicine, said only time will tell if this proves to be a permanent solution, but he praised the researchers for persevering to develop it.

“I can think of a handful of children I have seen in the last two decades who suffered greatly … that likely would have benefited from this technology,” Bent said.

Surveillance video shows the shocking moment an 11-year-old girl was allegedly molested by a Disney cruise worker at Port Canaveral, Florida just hours before the ship set sail.

Milton Braganza, a 33-year-old dining room server from Goa, India, allegedly fondled the girl’s breasts and forcibly kissed her shortly after the Brazilian adolescent boarded the Disney Dream ship on August 5 with her grandmother and sister for a five-night journey to the Bahamas.

Since Florida authorities were not informed, the suspect stayed aboard the ship as it set sail and has since been released by police in the Bahamas to return to his home country, angering U.S.officials.

Disney Cruise Line

Encounter: From the video, it appears the man lifts up his hand to usher the girl into the elevator (left). She stands inside while the cruise employee has his back turned to the camera

Disney Cruise Line
Disney Cruise Line

Claims: Though the suspect’s back blocks the camera view, he is seen speaking to the girl and bending down at some point during the encounter

Surveillance video shows the young passenger encountering the cruise line employee at 2:54pm, near the elevators shortly after she boarded the ship. According to estimates, a five day journey on a Disney cruises costs an average of $900 per person.

The girl boarded the elevator, where she said the man grabbed her breast, groped her and then kissed her, putting ‘mouth on mouth,’ she said according to a cruise security report.

In the video, the man’s back is to the camera blocking a view of the girl.

She informed her grandmother of the assault and minutes later video shows the girl, her grandmother and her sister emerging from an elevator and making their way to the ship’s customer service desk to report the crime.

Disney Cruise Line Suspect: The manager of the ship’s dining facility identified the man in the surveillance video as Milton Braganza, a 33-year-old dining room server from Goa, India

Disney Cruise Line Allegations: Police in Nassau, Bahamas say the suspect Milton Braganza confessed to touching the 11-year-old girl’s breast on August 7, two days after the incident

Security officers on the ship began investigating an ‘inappropriate sexual act’ at 3:22pm and at 4:40pm the dining room manager reviewed the video and identified the man in the footage as Milton Braganza.

There are more than 1,458 employees crew members who work on the ship.

The ship left the port at 5:02pm.

Braganza was called to report into security at 7:50pm.

Florida law enforcement were informed of the incident several hours later, on August 6.

Though the crime is alleged to have occurred nine months ago, details are just coming to light as the cruise line has been criticized for not immediately alerting Florida authorities of the molestation.

Because the incident occurred while the ship was docked, police in Port Canaveral would have jurisdiction because the ship was 1,000 feet from shore, Port Canaveral police chief Joseph Hellebrand told WKMG-TV.

Since they were not immediately informed, the suspect wasn’t questioned by U.S. police or apprehended.

Instead, Braganza was questioned by Bahamian police on August 7 in Nassau because the Disney Dream is flagged with the Bahamian flag.

Disney Cruise Line Cruise: The Disney Dream cruise ship can accommodate 4,000 passengers. Estimates suggest the average fare costs $900 per person

Disney Cruise Line Jurisdiction: When the kid-friendly cruise arrived in Nassau, Bahamas (pictured), the suspect was interviewed by local police

During the interrogation, Milton Braganza admitted to police in the Bahamas, ‘I touched her on her right breast with my left hand,’ according to a police report.

Two days into the trip though, the girl’s grandmother told authorities that she did not want the crime investigated.

Authorities in the Bahamas let Braganza go and Disney paid for the man’s airfare back to his native India.

If it had been investigated in Florida, charges would have proceeded against the man in spite of the grandmother’s opinion, Chief Hillebrand said.

Florida law enforcement are dumbfounded as to why officials would let the man go free.

A spokesman for Disney Cruise Line told the local TV station that the company ‘took proper action’ in responding to the passenger’s allegations.

The company has maintained that cruise line officials did not know an alleged crime had occurred until after the ship had left Florida.

The new “X Factor” judges have been confirmed as Kelly Rowland and Paulina Rubio, Fox announced today. They’ll join returning judges Simon Cowell and Demi Lovato when “The X Factor” returns in September.

“It’s taken more than a decade, but I’m delighted to finally be on a panel with three girls (I think!),” Cowell said in a statement. “Paulina and Kelly both have great taste and massive experience in the music industry and together with Demi, this is going to be a fun panel. It just feels like the time to do something different.”

“I am very excited to be reuniting with Simon Cowell and ‘The X Factor’ family,” said Rowland. “It feels great to be able to take this journey here at home in the states!”

“I love ‘The X Factor’! I can’t wait to find the next big music star here in America,” added Rubio. “I’m so thrilled to be part of the show as a judge. Simon, be careful what you wish for, let’s see if you are ready to handle me, empieza la fiesta, amigo!”

“We are thrilled that Kelly and Paulina are joining Demi on the panel this season, in what is sure to be a triple threat of talented and successful women against Simon week-to-week,” said Mike Darnell, President, Alternative Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company. “This is an incredible panel of judges and we can’t wait for fans to see what’s in store for Season 3 of ‘The X Factor.’”

“Kelly’s incredible talent as a member of one of the world’s most successful groups, Destiny’s Child, combined with her judging experience as part of the U.K. version of ‘The X Factor,’ make her an ideal choice to join this talented panel,” said Trish Kinane, executive producer for FremantleMedia North America. “Paulina is an amazing Latin superstar who brings glamour and fiery passion to the judges’ table. We welcome both of them in joining Simon, Demi and Mario in what will prove to be an exciting season.”

Rumors began to circulate on May 19 that the former Destiny’s Child member and Latin singer/actress were nearing deals to replace Britney Spears and L.A. Reid for the reality show’s third US season.

The clock has been ticking for Cowell and Fox to firm up the judging panel ahead of the competition’s first audition show in Charleston, South Carolina on May 21.

Rowland already had experience with “The X Factor,” having served as a judge on Season 8 of the original UK series. Rubio also has her share of reality experience, having coached on “The Voice Mexico” and signed on for upcoming offshoot “The Voice Kids” for Telemundo.

According to The Wrap, “The X Factor” took a different approach this season in trying to identify replacements for Spears and Reid — reportedly placing judging panel chemistry with Cowell and Lovato ahead of simple name recognition, which is a marked difference from the strategies of rivals “American Idol” and “The Voice,” which secured Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj, Shakira and Usher for their latest cycles. It’s a plan that might pay off — if a public figure as controversial as Spears couldn’t boost the ratings, it’s unlikely that another high profile artist could, short of Beyonce or Bieber.

As previously reported, Mario Lopez will return to the competition series as a host without Khloe Kardashian Odom.

Anchorage police say a young man who didn’t want to return to jail ran out onto the uncertain ice of an Alaska lake to escape officers armed with an arrest warrant.

Police spokeswoman Dani Myren says officers were sufficiently concerned about the thickness of the ice covering Cheney lake that none of them wanted to venture onto it. So a standoff ensued.

KTUU-TV reports (http://is.gd/4WCBub ) that police negotiators and Fire Department dive teams were staging on the lakeshore when the young man finally surrendered late Thursday afternoon.

Myren says officers went to a home earlier in the afternoon to serve 19-year-old Siaosi Sila with a warrant alleging failure to comply with probation conditions. The spokeswoman says Sila saw police as he approached the home in a vehicle, bailed out and headed for the lake.

It wasn’t immediately clear why he was on probation.

Metro Police say they have arrested two suspects in Thursday’s theft of an iPad that led to the death of a 15-year-old Bonanza High School student.

Jacob Dismont, 18, and Michael Samuel Solid, 21, both of Las Vegas, face charges of open murder, robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery.

Metro spokesman Bill Cassell said police were able, with the public’s help, to find the two suspects within 48 hours of the crime.

“We went from a horrible crime where a kid lost his life to suspects in custody,” Cassell said. “That shows the focus of this police department.”

He said police received tips from the public that significantly helped the investigation.

“We’re very confident we got the two who were there,” he said.

Marcos Vincente Arenas, a freshman at Bonanza, was walking on the south side of Charleston Boulevard carrying the iPad when a white vehicle, believed to be a Ford Explorer or Expedition, stopped and a man got out of the passenger side.

The man tried to steal the iPad and started to drag Arenas, who was trying to hold onto it, police said.

The man got back into the SUV with the teen still holding on, or being held by the suspect, police said. As the SUV drove west on Charleston Boulevard, Arenas fell and was struck by the vehicle, police said. He died at University Medical Center.

Cassell said the crime of stealing iPads and iPhones is so common across the country that police refer to it as “Apple picking.”

He said that anecdotal reports indicate the crime is increasing in Las Vegas.

He advised people to be alert when they’re in public places. And when it’s a decision between your safety and the Apple device, let it go and buy a new one.

THE parents of a baby labelled “ugly” and ridiculed on national television will today seek legal action after Channel 9 refused to apologise.

Michael and Melanie Richmond, from Avalon on Sydney’s northern beaches, said they were “still in shock and dumbfounded” after a Facebook image of their firstborn daughter Bella was broadcast on Thursday’s episode of The Footy Show without permission.

One of the panellists labelled the photograph of 18-month-old Bella “ugly” before commenting she looked like rugby league great and Channel 9 commentator Peter Sterling.

Mr Richmond said he and his wife would be consulting with lawyers today.

“We are going to seek legal advice because they (Channel 9) still haven’t gotten back to us,” he said yesterday.

“We were going to let it go but we can’t. Someone has put our baby on TV. We want to get some feedback on what our legal options are now.”

Mr Richmond said the image of his daughter, taken last year, was posted on his wife’s Facebook account.

“I understand how Facebook works and that when you share photos they become public and there’s nothing you can do,” he said.

“The fact is that somewhere, somehow, a producer has gotten a photo of my daughter and made the decision to put it on television. I know it’s supposed to be tongue in cheek but she’s just a baby. It’s not cool.”

The Footy Show

This screen shot from The Footy Show was inally sent to the Richmonds by Michael’s sister after having seen it on the show.

A fan of the show in the past, Mr Richmond said he and his wife would be switching off.

A Channel 9 spokeswoman said the network would not be making any comment when approached again yesterday.

The Sunday Telegraph story sparked a heated debate on The Daily Telegraph’s website yesterday, with many backing the Richmond family and branding the panellists “meatheads”.
