Margaret Anderson
Alleged gunman Benjamin Colton Barnes.
January 1, 2012, 11:25 p.m.

A ranger was shot to death on New Year’s Day and the 368-square-mile park was closed while 150 officers searched for the gunman over snowy, rugged terrain.

Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said Benjamin Colton Barnes, 24, was a “strong person of interest” in the slaying of Margaret Anderson, 34. Authorities recovered his vehicle, with weapons and body armor inside, Troyer said. A park spokesman said Barnes was an Iraq war veteran.

The incident began about 10:20 a.m. when a man sped past a checkpoint, park spokesman Kevin Bacher said. One ranger began following him, and Anderson eventually blocked the road with her car to stop him.

The gunman fired shots at Anderson and the ranger behind him, but only Anderson was hit, Bacher said. The shooter escaped on foot.

Authorities were following tracks in the snow, Troyer said, and planned to bring in an airplane with heat-seeking capabilities.

“We believe we have a good track on him, but he’s way ahead of us,” Troyer said Sunday evening.

“We do not know what resources the shooter has,” Bacher said. “We’re not sure what we’re up against. We know that he has a weapon, but we don’t know how many.”

Authorities asked people to stay away from the park, and for those inside to leave.

“We do have a very hot and dangerous situation,” Troyer said.

Bacher said about 125 people were still at the visitors center Sunday night along with five law enforcement officers protecting it. He said crews had considered removing them in armored vehicles, but decided not to risk it.

Park Supt. Randy King said Anderson had two young daughters and a husband who was working as a ranger elsewhere in the park at the time of the shooting.

“It’s just a huge tragedy — for the family, the park and the park service,” King said.

Barnes was also a suspect in the early Sunday morning shooting of four people at a house party south of Seattle, police said.

Former Olympic fencer Bob Anderson, the man who wielded Darth Vader’s light saber, died Sunday at 89, according to the British Academy of Fencing.

Anderson’s film work began when he was a swordfight stunt double and coach for Errol Flynn in the 1953 movie “Master of Balantree,” but perhaps his best-known job was when he put on Vader’s helmet in “Star Wars” for the famous duel with Luke Skywalker, according to the Internet Movie Database.

He represented Britain in the 1952 Olympic fencing competition, according to the 2009 documentary “Reclaiming the Blade.”

“He was truly one of our greatest fencing masters and a world-class film fight director and choreographer, and both the fencing community and film world will miss him,” Philip Bruce, president of the British Academy of Fencing.

Anderson “passed away peacefully this morning at 4 a.m. in hospital,” Bruce said in a posting on his group’s website.

He also served as swordmaster and trained the lead actors in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy and “Pirates of the Caribbean,” according to IMDb.com.

His credits include the 1993 remake of “The Three Musketeers,” “The Mask of Zorro,” “The Legend of Zorro,” “Die Another Day,” “The Princess Bride” and “The Parent Trap.”

Bill Haast figured he had handled more than three million poisonous snakes over the years, and he had the hands to prove it.

An eastern diamondback rattlesnake left one hand looking like a claw. A Malayan pit viper mangled an index finger. A cottonmouth bit a finger, which instantly turned black, prompting his wife to snip off the fingertip with garden clippers.

Mr. Haast was bitten at least 173 times by poisonous snakes, about 20 times almost fatally. It was all in a day’s work for probably the best-known snake handler in the country, a scientist-cum-showman who made enough money from milking toxic goo from slithery serpents to buy a cherry-red Rolls-Royce convertible.

A secret of his success was the immunity he had built up by injecting himself every day for more than 60 years with a mix of venoms from 32 snake species. He suspected the inoculations might have explained his extraordinarily good health, but he was reluctant to make that claim, he said, until he reached 100.

Mr. Haast, who was director of the Miami Serpentarium Laboratories, a snake-venom producer near Punta Gorda, Fla., died of natural causes on Wednesday at his home in southwest Florida, his wife, Nancy, said. He was 100.

Mr. Haast’s story was good enough in its day to land him in Walter Winchell’s syndicated column, on “The Tonight Show” and, hardly surprising, in Ripley’s Believe It or Not attractions. His original Miami Serpentarium, south of Miami on South Dixie Highway, attracted 50,000 tourists a year for four decades.

Outside was a 35-foot-high concrete statue of a giant cobra, forked tongue flicking menacingly. Inside, Mr. Haast, the self-proclaimed “Snakeman,” entertained paying customers by using his hands to grab snakes below their heads and force their teeth into soft plastic. Venom would then drain into test tubes fastened to the plastic. He did this 100 or so times a day.

The serpentarium was more than just another roadside attraction. The price of a gram of freeze-dried venom from exotic snakes, requiring 100 or more extractions to accumulate, could exceed $5,000. The substance is an essential ingredient in making a serum to treat snakebite victims. It has also shown promise as a medicinal ingredient.

Mr. Haast and a Miami doctor treated more than 6,000 people with a snake-venom serum that they and their patients contended was effective against multiple sclerosis and arthritis. After the CBS News program “60 Minutes” did a report on the subject in December 1979, interest in the serum surged. But in 1980 the Food and Drug Administration banned the product as useless after saying that numerous deficiencies had been found in Mr. Haast’s manufacturing process. Nevertheless, researchers have continued to work on drugs made from venom in the hope of using it to treat cancer, Alzheimer’s and other diseases.

Mr. Haast himself indisputably saved lives. He flew around the world to donate his antibody-rich blood to 21 different snakebite victims. Venezuela made him an honorary citizen after he went deep into the jungle to give a boy a pint of blood.

The favor was returned in 1989 when, according to The Associated Press, the White House used secret connections to spirit a rare serum out of Iran to treat Mr. Haast as he fought to recover from a bite by a Pakistani pit viper. (Different venoms require different antidotes.)

William E. Haast was born on Dec. 30, 1910, in Paterson, N.J. He caught his first garter snake at 7 at a nearby canal. His first serious snake bite came at age 12, when he was bitten by a timber rattlesnake at Boy Scout camp. The same year, a copperhead’s bite put him in the hospital for a week. When young Bill brought his first poisonous snake home to the family apartment, his mother left home for three days, he said. She finally agreed to let him keep a snake or two in cages.

“The snake would bite the mouse,” he said in an interview with The Miami Herald in 1984. “The mouse would die. I found it intriguing.”

He bought his first exotic snake, a diamondback rattler, from a catalog. Noticing that it had come from Florida, he knew then, he said, that Florida was his destiny. After dropping out of school at 16, he joined a roadside snake show that made its way to Florida in the late 1920s.

The snake attraction soon failed during the Depression, so Mr. Haast went to work for a bootlegger in the Everglades, where he was pleased to find plenty of snakes. The bootlegger was arrested, and Mr. Haast found his way to an airline mechanics school.

Finding a job as a flight engineer with Pan American World Airways, he began traveling around the world. That gave him a chance to use his toolbox to smuggle snakes, including his first cobra.

Mr. Haast’s dream of a first-class snake farm came true when he opened his Miami serpentarium in 1947. His near-fatal snakebites became legend in the news media, particularly after the total passed 100 in the mid-1960s.

His first wife, Ann, divorced him over his snake obsession. His second, Clarita, and third, Nancy, pitched in enthusiastically.

Besides his wife, the former Nancy Harrell, he is survived by two daughters, three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Haast closed the serpentarium in 1984 after a 6-year-old boy fell into his crocodile pit and was fatally mauled. He moved his venom-gathering operation to Utah. Six years later, he returned to Florida and opened the facility in Punta Gorda, where he raised and milked snakes but did not resume his snake show.

For all the time he spent with snakes, Mr. Haast harbored no illusions that they liked him.

“You could have a snake for 30 years and the second you leave his cage door cracked, he’s gone,” he told Outside magazine in 1997. “And they’ll never come to you unless you’re holding a mouse in your teeth.”

December 8, 2011: Sinead O'Connor marries Barry Herridge on her 45th birthday at 'A Little White Wedding Chapel' drive-thru in Las Vegas, Nevada.

9:06 AM EST Tuesday December 27, 2011

Sixteen days after her December 8 Las Vegas wedding to boyfriend Barry Herridge, Sinead O’Connor is ending the marriage, the “Nothing Compares 2 U” singer announced Monday on her website.

“Dear friends,” O’Connor 45, writes, “I had for reasons u will all understand, wished to keep this private but have been told today it is to be leaked in the next few days despite my best efforts. So I must now leak it myself so as the record is straight.”

She blames pressures placed upon him by “certain people in his life” not to be with her based on press reports about her.

“Within 3 hours of the ceremony being over the marriage was kyboshed by the behaviour of certain people in my husband’s life. And also by a bit of a wild ride i took us on looking for a bit of a smoke of weed for me wedding night as I don’t drink,” she writes. “My husband was enormously wounded and very badly effected by that experience and also by the attitude of those close to him toward our marriage. It became apparent to me that if he were to stay with me he would be losing too much to bear.”

She adds, “A woman wants to be a joy to her husband. So.. U love someone? Set them free.”

She also says, “He is a wonderful man. I love him very much. I’m sorry I’m not a more regular woman. I truly believe though it is painful to admit, we made a mistake rushing into getting married, for altruistic reasons, and weren’t aware or prepared for the consequences on my husband’s life and the lives of those close to him. He has been terribly unhappy and I have therefore ended the marriage. I think he is too nice to do so. And too nice to trap.”

O’Connor, who has four children from her previous relationships, wed music producer John Reynolds in 1989 and journalist Nicholas Sommerlad in 2001. This past April, she split from longtime friend and collaborator Steve Cooney.

A missing 9-year-old Indiana girl has been found dead, and the family friend who was watching her before she disappeared was charged with murder Monday night, authorities said.

Allen County sheriff’s spokesman Cpl. Jeremy Tinkel said investigators found the body of Aliahna Lemmon in the county, but he wouldn’t say where. He also said 39-year-old Mike Plumadore was “interviewed by police and taken into custody at 9 p.m. and charged with murder.”

Plumadore, who had been watching Aliahna and her sisters before she was reported missing late Friday, is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.

FBI agents earlier Monday descended on the rundown mobile home park in Fort Wayne where Aliahna lived and was last seen. It’s a known haven for registered sex offenders, though Plumadore is not on Indiana’s registered sex offenders list. He has a criminal record in Florida and North Carolina that includes convictions for trespassing and assault.

According to a state website, 15 registered sex offenders live at the mobile home park that numbers about two dozen homes.

More than 100 emergency workers searched for Aliahna around the mobile home park Saturday, though no active search was done Sunday. Tinkel said the same size search could not be sustained because of the Christmas holiday.

“Children don’t just walk away during Christmastime,” Aliahna’s step-grandfather, David Story, said Monday afternoon.

Aliahna’s mother, Tarah Souders, told The Journal Gazette earlier Monday that her daughter had vision and hearing problems and suffered from attention deficit disorder and emotional problems. Aliahna and her sisters were staying with Plumadore because their mother had been sick with the flu and Aliahna’s stepfather works at night and sleeps during the day.

Plumadore told the newspaper Sunday that he left the three girls in his mobile home about 6 a.m. Friday and went to a gas station about a mile away to buy a cigar. Authorities have said the store’s surveillance video shows him there about that time.

“I had dead-bolted the door,” he said. “When I got back, all the girls was here.”

He said he smoked his cigar and went back to sleep, then woke up about 10 a.m. when Aliahna’s mother called. After that call, he realized the door to the home was unlocked and that Aliahna was gone. He said Aliahna’s 6-year-old sisters told him Aliahna had left with her mother.

Plumadore said it wasn’t until he talked with Aliahna’s mother about 8:30 p.m. that they realized she was missing and police were notified.

Tarah Souders said the miscommunication caused the delay in determining that Aliahna had vanished.

“She’s never wandered off,” Souders said. “She’s never done anything like this before.”

Singer George Michael has admitted that his recent bout of pneumonia was “touch and go for a while” and was “the worst month of my life”.

The 48-year-old star, who has returned to London following a month-long stay in a Vienna hospital, said he was “very weak” but added he feels “amazing”.

In a press conference outside his home, an emotional Michael said he still has “plenty to live for”.

He was forced to shelve the remaining 14 dates of his tour after falling ill.

Michael acknowledged the gravity of his illness, explaining that the General Hospital (AKH) in Vienna was “the best place in the world I could have been”.

“They spent three weeks keeping me alive, basically… I’m incredibly fortunate to be here.

“Somebody here still thinks I’ve got some work to do,” added the star.

The musician apologised to his fans for not contacting them, saying “I was really not in a state to”.

He added that the “plan is to play to every person who had a ticket” for his shelved gigs.

Michael also said he wanted to play another show for the Austrian medical staff who “saved my life”.

Michael was advised by doctors to take a “full and complete rest” after contracting a severe form of pneumonia last month.

He had performed 45 dates in his concert schedule before being forced to cancel the performance in Vienna.

The shelved dates have yet to be rescheduled.

In October, the musician pulled out of a gig at London’s Royal Albert Hall, suffering with a viral infection.

After he was admitted to hospital in Vienna, Michael’s publicists said that he was “responding to treatment and slowly improving”.

They added in a statement: “George Michael is ill with pneumonia and any other speculation regarding his illness is unfounded and untrue.”

Flagstaff Medical Center officials say they have discharged a university student who told authorities she’d been snowbound in northern Arizona for more than a week.

Coconino County authorities say Lauren Weinberg was driving around with no specific destination when she drove south from Winslow toward the Mogollon Rim on Dec. 11.

The 23-year-old undergraduate at Arizona State University had two candy bars with her and told a sheriff’s deputy that she put snow in a water bottle and placed it atop the sedan she was driving so it would melt.

Sheriff’s Office spokesman Gerry Blair says two U.S. Forest Service employees on snowmobiles found her about 45 miles southeast of Winslow while they were checking if gates on forest roads were closed. When she was found, Weinberg was described as coherent and lucid but very hungry, thirsty and cold.
