Lindsay Bien-aime was forcibly removed from a US Airways flight for refusing to comply with flight attendant instructions.

June 25, 2013

A woman was forcibly removed from a US Airways flight on Sunday for refusing to comply with flight crew instructions. Much of what appears to have happened was videotaped by a fellow passenger and posted to YouTube (warning: graphic language).

The flight, US Airways 906, was bound for Charlotte, N.C., from Fort Lauderdale, Fla. According to a report obtained by ABC News from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, passenger Lindsay Bien-aime refused to comply with flight attendant instructions prior to takeoff and “became unruly.” The pilot ordered the woman off the plane. Despite orders from Broward County officers who had boarded the flight, Bien-aime “continued to refuse to exit the plane” and “became irate, screaming and yelling profanities.”

ABC News’ attempts to reach Bien-aime or a representative were not successful.

On the four-minute profanity-laced video, a woman is heard shouting not only at the officers trying to remove her from the flight but at the passengers around her.

“I will hold up this whole [expletive] plane, the woman can be heard saying. “I don’t care where people gotta go.”

In the video, the woman can be heard repeatedly requesting that a flight attendant come to her seat and explain what she had done wrong before she would leave the plane. Another voice can be heard saying, she has “been on her phone the whole time.”

When the woman still wouldn’t budge, the officers attempted to handcuff her, and a scuffle ensued. Two more people who appeared to be passengers came to the aid of the officers.

According to the police report, Bien-aime “scratched, kicked and violently resisted” attempts to remove her from the plane.

She was charged on three counts, including battery, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest with violence.

The incident comes on the heels of another in which a group of 100 students were kicked off an AirTran flight when some of them would not comply with flight attendant requests to put away mobile devices.

US Airways did not respond to ABC News’ request for comment.

Jeb Burton found his way to victory lane for the first time in a NASCAR national-level race after holding off Ty Dillon to the finish of the WinStar World Casino 400 under the floodlights at the 1.5-mile high-banked Texas Motor Speedway on Friday night.

Earlier, Johnny Sauter posted the only sub-30s lap in qualifying to claim his fifth pole in 115 series starts, and his first of 2013. With the field slightly depleted by the fact that the Cup and Nationwide Series events are taking place in different parts of the country this weekend, all 32 entries qualified for the race. Sauter led for the first 11 laps of the race but was then ousted by Ty Dillon, who went on to lead for 76 of the 167 laps of the WinStar World Casino 400 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

Burton didn’t lead at all until lap 99 during a round of pit stops and then only for one lap, but on lap 144 he emerged at the front and held it from there to the finish of the race to claim the chequered flag by 0.139s over Dillon. It’s Burton’s first win in the series in 12 starts.

In the Truck Series standings, Burton’s win allows him to close up to just 23pts off the back of championship leader Matt Crafton who finished three positions back in fourth place in Texas.

Long lost sisters Jordan Dickerson and Robin Jeter had lived in the same city for 17 years, but they never crossed paths until their high schools faced off at a Washington DC track meet.

The two teens began to suspect they had more than sports in common when Dickerson’ teammates at Woodrow Wilson High School noticed that a rival runner from Friendship Collegiate Academy bore a striking resemblance to their friend.

“Everyone was saying, ‘It’s your twin, look at your twin over there!'” Dickerson’s mother, Patrice Dickerson, told ABC News of the chance encounter. “They were freaked out by how much they resembled each other.”

“We were just scoping each other out,” Jordan Dickerson told ABC News. “I was trying to look for her [at the track meet] to see how much she looked like me.”

By the end of the event, Jordan finally worked up the courage to ask someone who that other girl was.

“They told me her name was Robin Jeter. I had previously known my birth name was Jeter. The reality instantly hit me that she was my sister,” Dickerson said.

“She knew,” her mother said, “and she immediately started crying.”

“I was crying in the middle of the bleachers for no reason. It was embarrassing,” Jordan said.

Patrice Dickerson adopted Jordan when she was only 3 months old. She said she had been open with her daughter about her adoption as well as the possibility that she might have siblings.

Mrs. Dickerson said the two girls eventually approached each other at the meet and exchanged phone numbers. But Jordan did not broach the subject that the two could be related until Jeter called that same night.

“I didn’t want to say, ‘Oh you know you’re my sister’ right then at the track meet,'” Jordan said.

When the teens spoke, they talked about their childhoods, Mrs. Dickerson said. The two realized they were sisters when Jordan shared that she was adopted and that her birth mother’s name was Jeter.

The sisters also learned they were born nearly nine months apart. Jordan is the younger sister at 17. Robin is 18.

“Both of them were thrilled,” Patrice Dickerson said of their discovery.

Patrice Dickerson’s sister, Vera Holtzclaw, told ABC News that her niece texted the entire family after she met Jeter for the first time.

“It was a simple teenager text, ‘I have to tell you the details later but here’s a picture of my sister and I, we found each other at a track meet,'” said Holtzclaw. “They were smiling the biggest smiles you could ever imagine.”

It was Jordan Dickerson’s first season running track. If she hadn’t joined the team, “this never would have happened,” she said.

Since their reunion in January, the two teens have been trying to make up for lost time.

“Robin has been able to spend most weekends with us at my house with Jordan and myself, and we’re able to go do family things,” Patrice Dickerson said. “They spend a lot of time with the door closed, giggling.”

“We have the same mannerisms, we like the same foods, we have the same shoe size, we talk the same, we run the same in track,” Jordan said. “We’re so much the same that I haven’t really thought of ways we’re different.”

For Mother’s Day, Jordan met her biological mother for the first time.

“Jordan had been looking forward to this moment her whole life. As a result, so did I,” said Patrice Dickerson. “The meeting went better than I could have dreamed.”

While Robin currently lives with a legal guardian, she lived with her mother at a point in time, Dickerson said.

A Mormon bishop armed with a Samurai sword came to the defense of his neighbor on Tuesday in a Salt Lake City suburb by helping to chase away a man who had accosted the woman, police said.

The 37-year-old suspect, Grant Eggertsen, later turned himself in to authorities and was booked into jail on suspicion of robbery, burglary, trespassing and stalking, said local police spokesman Lieutenant Justin Hoyal.

The Samurai sword-wielding Mormon bishop, Kent Hendrix, 47, said his son alerted him on Tuesday morning that a woman neighbor was in trouble outside Hendrix’s home in the Salt Lake City suburb of East Millcreek.

Eggertsen had approached the woman as she exited her home, Hoyal said. He grabbed her house keys and tried to get into the house, police said.

The woman ran away, screaming for help, and several neighbors responded to her plea, Hoyal said.

Hendrix, who teaches martial arts, grabbed the 29-inch (74-cm) carbon steel Samurai sword he keeps next to his bed and ran to the woman’s aid. He said that when he came face to face with the suspect, the man stopped in his tracks.

“He was kind of taken aback to have this sword drawn on him and he jumped back,” said Hendrix, who is a bishop in charge of his local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints congregation.

“He said, ‘I’m leaving,’ and turned and ran, so I ran after him. I didn’t want him to get away anonymously,” Hendrix said.

The man then fled in his car, Hendrix said.

Hoyal confirmed that Hendrix used the Samurai sword to come to the defense of his neighbor.

Eggertsen and the woman, who has not been identified, had previously worked at the same company, Hoyal said. Their professional relationship had turned sour and the woman had obtained a protective order against the man, he said.

The woman suffered only minor injuries, Hoyal said.

Eggertsen was in jail on bail of $555 and could not be reached for comment. It was unclear if he has an attorney.

Hendrix called the incident an “interfaith effort” to apprehend the suspect, saying that Catholic and Protestant neighbors were also involved.

Connecticut has been to the women’s NCAA championship round twice in the last five years. In 2009, they were up against Louisville.

And here we are again. (Or, we will be on Tuesday.)

Connecticut beat Notre Dame 83-65 in the Final Four round Sunday night, clinching its ride to the title game. Earlier, Louisville rallied a comeback against California, ending at 64-57.

The Fighting Irish had a history with UConn going into Sunday’s game. As The Associated Press reminded us:

“Notre Dame has beaten UConn three times this season by an average of three points — although the largest margin of victory, a six-point victory in South Bend on March 2, came in triple overtime.”

It was not to be Sunday. UConn’s Breanna Stewart scored 29 points. By halftime, Connecticut had a 10-point lead.

Our Original Post Continues:

It was a surprise either of them made it. California, which was playing its first Final Four, lost to Louisville. Louisville had already brought down top teams Baylor and Tennessee earlier in the women’s NCAA college basketball tournament.

The No. 5 Cardinals won 64-57, becoming the first team seeded worse than fourth to win a Final Four game, CBS News saysThe San Jose Mercury News reports:

“After opening the game with one of their best halves of the tournament, the Bears (32-4) saw their double-digit lead evaporate in the second half.”

NPR’s Tom Goldman tells our Newscast Desk that Louisville’s comeback was largely thanks to Antonita Slaughter, who scored 18 points with six 3-point shots. Tom reports:

“Her shooting really kept Louisville close when nothing else was going right because Cal was controlling the boards, they were controlling the tempo. When the game got tight in the second half, Cal committed several turnovers on successive possessions. That let Louisville back in the game.”

SB Nation called it “one of the best games” of the women’s contest this year.

Tuesday, Louisville will go on to play the winner of Sunday night’s UConn-Notre Dame matchup. It will be the Cardinals’ first time back in the title game since 2009.

Oh, and Louisville also made it to the top of the men’s tournament. They face Michigan Monday night.

April 06, 2013

A disabled war veteran who deployed four times — three times to Iraq and once to Korea — and nearly lost his life serving the United States is now fighting a different battle altogether at home in Las Vegas.

James Courtney’s wife, Sharon, is an undocumented Mexican immigrant who faces possible deportation. Sharon came to the United States from Juarez, Mexico, as a teenager and the two have been married for more than a dozen years. They have three young sons.

The couple recently joined immigration activists in Washington, D.C., to tell their story and urge lawmakers to take action to prevent the separation of families like theirs.

Sharon was awarded a one-year work visa in the early 2000s, then denied a green card based on a false claim of citizenship.

But James, who suffered a traumatic brain injury during his second deployment to Iraq that resulted in short-term memory loss and other difficulties, disputes that claim and said it has been “the kiss of death.”

James said Sharon was returning to the United States from a trip to Mexico when she was 19 to see her mother and brother. She spoke very little English and the border patrol spoke very little Spanish, so communication was difficult. As Sharon recalls, she told them she was born in Juarez and that her city of residence was El Paso, Texas, where she lived at the time. But the border patrol agents marked that she claimed to be a citizen.

Sharon said she was then thrown into a nightmarish nine-hour ordeal in which she was laughed at and not allowed access to a phone to make a local call.

“I didn’t say I was a U.S. citizen,” she recalled. “I didn’t! Whether they help me now or not, this was wrong.”

U.S. Customs and Border Protection did not respond to a request for comment.

James was discharged from the military last year following a post-traumatic stress disorder diagnosis, an emotional situation made even more difficult by Sharon’s undocumented status. She has no work permit and is unable to help support the family, which now depends on her husband’s army retirement and disability benefits.

Sharon has received a voluntary deportation order and James said that now that he’s no longer overseas he has more time to focus on fighting it.

“I just hope something gets done where she can get a green card where she can work legally and help with the finances,” James said.

The idea of returning to Mexico as a family is unrealistic, James said. Juarez has been plagued by drug-fueled violence in recent decades, and Sharon is the only member of the family who speaks Spanish.

“I’m paid by U.S. tax dollar money,” James added. “Why in the hell would I want to go spend it in Mexico?”

The couple spoke in Washington about their fear of being torn apart at the invitation of Nevada Rep. Steven Horsford, where their story caught the attention of lawmakers.

James said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nevada) expressed sympathy and that Rep. Joe Heck (R-Nevada) seemed particularly eager to help.

Requests for comment were not returned by either lawmaker’s office.

James and Sharon don’t think that the pathway to citizenship being discussed as part of a comprehensive immigration reform package will come to fruition, but hope that something can be done to keep families together.

“If it passes, it’s going to be a miracle,” Sharon said. “We don’t need to suffer. This is cruel, very cruel, especially for our kids.”

President Obama on Tuesday appointed Julia A. Pierson, a longtime Secret Service agent, as the first woman to head the agency best known for protecting the president, vice president and their families.

Ms. Pierson, the chief of staff to Mark J. Sullivan, who retired as director last month, will take over at a time when the Secret Service is still recovering from a prostitution scandal last year that held it up to public ridicule, generated Congressional hearings and cost a number of agents their jobs.

The appointment represented a milestone for law enforcement, putting a woman at the top of an agency with a storied past and a Hollywood-fueled image of Clint Eastwood-style men with sunglasses and earpieces stoically guarding the commander in chief at home and abroad. Mr. Obama has also installed women as directors of the Marshals Service and Drug Enforcement Administration, but the Secret Service has a unique visibility.

With 30 years of experience in the Secret Service, Ms. Pierson, 53, boasts a résumé much like those of her predecessors, including a stint on the first President George Bush’s protective detail. But the timing of her selection inevitably means that Washington will be watching closely to see how or if she changes a male-driven culture that came under harsh scrutiny when agents were caught employing prostitutes in Colombia before Mr. Obama arrived for a visit.

“During the Colombia prostitution scandal, the Secret Service lost the trust of many Americans and failed to live up to the high expectations placed on it,” Senator Charles E. Grassley, Republican of Iowa. “Ms. Pierson has a lot of work ahead of her to create a culture that respects the important job the agency is tasked with. I hope she succeeds in restoring lost credibility in the Secret Service.”

In a statement, Mr. Obama said Ms. Pierson “exemplified the spirit and dedication” of the agency but made no mention of the scandal.

Her appointment does not require Senate confirmation.

“Julia is eminently qualified to lead the agency that not only safeguards Americans at major events and secures our financial system, but also protects our leaders and our first families, including my own,” Mr. Obama said. “Julia has had an exemplary career, and I know these experiences will guide her as she takes on this new challenge to lead the impressive men and women of this important agency.”

The Secret Service was formed in 1865 to crack down on counterfeit currency. After the assassination of President William McKinley in 1901, Congress assigned it the mission of providing full-time protection for the president. Over the years, it also began guarding former presidents, presidential nominees, visiting foreign leaders and others.

The first woman was sworn in to what was then called the Secret Service auxiliary in 1970, and five women were then made full-fledged agents the following year. Eventually, women were included in presidential protective details.

Of 3,500 special agents today, about 10 percent are women, lower than at other law enforcement agencies. The proportion of women in the Secret Service uniformed division, which protects the White House and other facilities, is somewhat higher.

Ms. Pierson’s selection encouraged some who came before.

“It validates that women have contributions to make in law enforcement, and they’re finally in place where they can take these positions,” said Margaret Moore, a retired Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agent and chairwoman of the Women in Federal Law Enforcement, a professional association.

Barbara Riggs, the first female deputy director of the Secret Service and a friend and mentor to Ms. Pierson, said the new director was known for her competence across an array of fields.

“Whenever you give her an assignment, she always does an excellent job,” Ms. Riggs said. “She’s a go-to person.”

A native of Orlando, Fla., Ms. Pierson joined the Secret Service in 1983 after three years as a police officer. She moved to the presidential protective division in 1988, became the agency’s drug program coordinator in 1992 and was promoted to assistant special agent in charge of the Office of Protective Operations in 1996. After a stint in Tampa, Fla., where she established a cybercrime task force, she moved up the management ladder in Washington, becoming chief of staff in 2008.

In a short biography prepared by the Partnership for Public Service, a nonprofit organization promoting federal employment, she talked about the agency’s challenges: “I don’t think people realize the amount of preparation work that goes into a presidential visit, everything from where the president is going to physically arrive, whether by airplane or limousine, to the actual event site.”

She succeeds Mr. Sullivan, who released a statement praising her. “This is a historic and exciting time for the Secret Service,” he said, “and I know Julie will do an outstanding job.”

Ms. Riggs said that last year’s scandal did not represent the broader professionalism of the agency and that she hoped Ms. Pierson would be able to restore its credibility.

“She has a challenge in front of her because unfortunately in the public eye that’s what’s branding the Secret Service,” Ms. Riggs said. “She has a challenge to move the agency beyond that.”
