(Reuters) – Grammy-winning pop star Mariah Carey will join Fox television’s “American Idol” singing competition on the judge’s panel next season as the highly rated show tries to recapture viewership that has weakened in recent years.

Kevin Reilly, president of entertainment for Fox Broadcasting, told television critics on Monday in Los Angeles that popular singer Carey will be one of the replacements for departing judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez.

Tyler, the front man for rock band Aerosmith, announced his departure earlier this month. Lopez, too, had hinted at her departure in recent weeks, and on Monday Reilly confirmed she will not return for the upcoming season.

Reilly said the deal with Carey was finalized early on Monday, and in a dramatic move for TV critics at the conference, he called the singer on his cell phone to announce the deal.

“Hi Mariah, How are you? I have just uttered your name for the first time. We do have a deal, don’t we?,” Reilly said.

Carey, answering on speakerphone, said “I am so excited to be joining ‘Idol’… I wish I could have been there myself to tell you but this all kind of just happened. I can’t wait to get started,” the singer said.

Reilly declined to announce other new judges but said that some of “the biggest names in the business are interested in doing the job.”

Carey, 42, known for soaring ballads like “Hero” and “We Belong Together,” had been named in reports as a frontrunner for a job as one of the show’s judges, and she is expected to bring attention and viewers to the 11-year-old singing contest, which lost some 20 percent of its audience this past season.

The singer has won five Grammys, the music industry’s top honors, and she sold more than 200 million records worldwide.

Reilly did not discuss financial details of the agreement, but Carey has previously been reported to be in negotiations for a payday of around $15 million a year.

She joins a roster of superstar celebrity judges on reality TV, including Britney Spears on Fox’s upcoming second season of “The X Factor” and Howard Stern on NBC’s summer series “America’s Got Talent”.

“American Idol” has been a ratings and advertising juggernaut since it debuted in 2002. But its audiences are now only about half the more than 30 million who watched regularly in the show’s 2005 and 2006 heyday.

The most recent season finale in May was the least-watched in “America Idol”‘s history, attracting just 21.5 million viewers.

The show returns for a 12th season in January 2013.

Joshua Ledet

“Ain’t Too Proud to Beg”: It was a particularly good night for Ledet. After hearing Ledet tackle this Temptations song in rehearsal, Iovine was moved to declare that Ledet “has a gift.” Ledet, looking supersharp in a stripey-sleeved suit and flanked by backup singers, worked it out and showed us all what Iovine meant. “Joshua, you’ve gotta be one of the top two best ‘Idols’ of all time,” Tyler said, making me wonder whether his frame of reference reached back before he joined the show last season. (I doubt it.) Lopez said he was “like a throwback to another era” and that his talent was “so sick; it’s crazy.” Jackson compared Ledet to Terence Trent D’Arby and said he “could actually bring R&B back” into vogue.

“To Love Somebody”: Ledet wanted to sing Tom Jones, but Iovine snickeringly called that a “bad idea.”  (Perhaps he was worried about panty throwers?) This Bee Gees song, which Ledet had never heard before Iovine and Van Zandt suggested it, was among Ledet’s finest “Idol” moments. In rehearsal, Van Zandt called the version of it Ledet sang after having heard it only 15 minutes prior, “one of the greatest performances I’ve ever heard in my life.” Ledet slayed it onstage, too, earning yet another standing ovation -– the only one of the night –- from the judges. Jackson called Ledet “one of the best singers ever on this show.” Lopez tops him, saying, Ledet is “one of the best singers I’ve seen in 50 years.” (How old is she, again?) And Tyler brought it back down to earth, saying Ledet’s song “would have been a hit record” right off the bat.

If the judges and sentimentality have their way, Lauren Alaina should become the next American Idol.

On Tuesday’s final sing-off, (leading up to Wednesday’s big reveal), Lauren Alaina earned the decided edge over Scotty McCreery when, after her third number, Randy gave her the only standing ovation of the night, J. Lo commented “with that song you may have just won” and Steven Tyler‘s declared: “you are It in my eyes.”

It didn’t hurt that all three responded to a brand new song that milks the show’s family values to a historic degree. Alaina delivered “Like My Mother Does,” a gushy ode to genes and maternal caring that, predictably, reduced the singer’s own mom to a puddle.

It will also work to Lauren’s advantage that the demographics of this year’s voting body has ticked north, favoring older viewers, who are more likely to be moms themselves.

If that’s not enough, Lauren earned instant underdog status Tuesday by revealing at the top of the show that she blew out a vocal chord in rehearsals that afternoon. Which true heartland American would fail to fall for a comeback-from-adversity story like that?

Then again, the last few years have seen the disfavored singer pull from behind to win, including Lee DeWyze over Crystal Bowersox (who then outsold him on CD) and Kris Allen over Adam Lambert (who did the same, four fold).

In truth, the performances of both Lauren and Scotty probably went over big with their true believers. Like last week, they made their case in three rounds. The first featured their favorite song from the season. The second had them croon pieces chosen for them by their own idols, while the third saw them perform the song that will serve as their first single should they win.

Scotty revived his take on Montgomery Gentry‘s “Gone,” emphasizing showmanship over fuller emotion. Lauren chose the power ballad “Flat On The Floor,” which she bat out of the ballpark, showing equal parts physicality and feeling.

In round two, Scotty warbled “Check Yes or No,” a cut chosen by his deep-voiced role model George Strait. It’s a witty number but unfortunately the performance reiterated Scotty’s overwhelming debt to other singer’s styles.

Lauren had a more interesting dynamic with her mentor. Her song came via former A.I. winner Carrie Underwood, the star Lauren will most likely be compared to in the market place. Given this, might Underwood have been tempted to sabotage her potential competition? Apparently not. Carrie’s choice of Pam Tillis‘ “Maybe It Was Memphis” gave the young singer the ideal showcase for her mix of emotion and authority.

Round three also intrigued, doubling as a kind of warning. By featuring the singer’s first potential singles, it gave the audience its clearest indication of what we’ll be in for should they win. Mentor Jimmy Iovine tailored a perfect song for Scotty – “I Love You This Big,” whose scrupulously innocent lyric used the singer’s virginal character to his advantage. Still, it will be hard for such naivete to beat the sheer mom power in Lauren’s song – especially as delivered by a singer who battled back from the day’s adversity with such aplomb.

American Idol contestant Lauren Alaina created something of a buzz in last night’s show with her emotional performance – setting her up as a frontrunner to win the show.

The 15-year-old blew the judges away with her stunning performance of Faith Hill’s Like We Never Loved At All, with Jennifer Lopez dissolving into tears afterwards.

Already she is being compared to country singer Carrie Underwood on chat forums and blogs. Underwood won six years ago and is the most successful act to have come out of the talent show to date.

Lauren, from Georgia, dedicated her performance to her cancer-survivor cousin Holly, who joined her, as she stunned the panel at the Nashville auditions which were screened in the U.S. last night in the second part of this week’s shows.

Afterwards, Steven Tyler remarked that he believed they had found ‘the one’.

Following her audition piece, Lauren performed Don’t Want To Miss a Thing with a little help from Aerosmith’s Tyler, having ushered her family in to watch.

Randy Jackson told her: ‘Best we’ve seen today … I’m blown away.’

‘I think you should cry,’ Tyler added as Lauren began to get tearful, promoting J.LO to well up.

‘You’re going to make 40 million people cry tears of joy, baby,’ Tyler finished, while somewhat exaggerating Idol’s 20million-something viewing figures.

The night ended with one of the all-time “Idol” audition tearjerker stories, courtesy of Chicago’s Chris Medina, 26, who told the tragic tale of his fiancée’s life-changing car accident. After getting engaged following eight years together, she suffered a traumatic brain injury in 2009 and Medina explained how he stood by her side and is now her caretaker.

His finger-snapping amble through “Break Even” by the Script had touches of heart and soul, and after he wheeled girlfriend Julie in to meet the judges, they broke the good news that he was going to advance. “Nice kid, he sang great,” Randy said.

American Idol wannabe Chris Medina, who apparently impressed the judge with his voice, had one very touching story to share and he brought his disabled fiancée Juliana Ramos to watch him audition for the FOX’s talent show.

Chris and Juliana’s story touched new judge Steven Tyler so much, the Aerosmith frontman could not contain his emotions and he cried. The 27 year-old contestant revealed he had proposed to Juliana before she was involved in a horrible car accident, which left her nearly paralyzed and with significant brain damage.

The couple is currently trying to adjust to this new condition and they have put their wedding on hold because they cannot afford it. Juliana’s medical expenses are way too high, so if you want to help Chris and Juliana visit their website HERE.

That is a beautiful love story. After Chris sang for the judges, Steven got up to hug and kiss Juliana. That is one precious Idol moment you will not want to miss.

American Idol season 10 auditions start at 8 pm on FOX Wednesday night (January 19).

August 2, 2010 6:32 PM

Big-voiced singer Steven Tyler of Aerosmith confirmed that he’s been approached about joining the judges’ panel on FOX’s American Idol next season, possibly filling one of the spots vacated by Simon Cowell and Ellen DeGeneres.

“This beautiful girl from FOX came up to me and made an offer,” Tyler said yesterday on Kid Kraddick in the Morning, a syndicated radio show (via Billboard). “They mentioned it and I listened, and we’re on tour, so I gotta give it some time.”

“I would be honest to the ones that think they have it, and I would be truthful in the sense that if, to those that have it, they don’t have it yet enough,” he continued. “And I would tell them exactly why, as I see it.”

Tyler is just one of the stars said to be in the running for Idol‘s dais, joining Jennifer Lopez, Chris Isaak, and Jessica Simpson in the rumor mill. Cowell, one of Idol‘s creators, announced his departure during the show’s most recent season, but DeGeneres’ decision last week to leave the show after just one year was considered a surprise by TV insiders and fans alike.

Aerosmith kicked off their North American tour last week in Oakland, CA, and it was their first U.S. show since August 2009, when Tyler injured himself in an onstage fall.
