“Hiccup Girl” Jennifer Mee, the Pinellas County girl whose uncontrollable hiccups drew worldwide fame, is now talking to select press outlets, trying to publicize an alternate explanation for her involvement in the Oct. 23 murder of a 22-year-old man.

Mee talked with Tampa Fox affiliate WTVT-Ch. 13 for an interview which aired today and NBC’s Today show for a talk to be broadcast Tuesday morning. She had to speak with them from the Pinellas County jail, where she is awaiting trial for murder, accused of luring Shannon Griffin to a vacant home, where he died after being shot, police said, during a robbery gone bad.

“I was just going with what people were telling me to do,” Mee told WTVT reporter Doug Smith. “It was a whole….I call it a love triangle.” See the St. Petersburg Times report on her recent statements here.

Mee, who appeared on national news programs in 2008 to describe her hiccuping problem, told Smith that her problem was a curse, blaming it for drawing the wrong people to her. She said one of the men arrested with her, 20-year-old Laron Cordale Raiford, shot Griffin in a jealous rage after catching the two of them together (another roommate, Lamont Antonio Newton, 22, was also arrested). Police said Mee, Raiford and Newton admitted they tried to rob Green.

Mee’s attorney John Trevena said he made his client available to select press outlets when he became concerned police released the most damaging evidence against his client close to her bond hearing. “They tried to manipulate the media and the jury pool,” said Trevena, known for taking cases with a high media profile. “They turned my own game against me.”

Mee’s arrest at the end of last year kicked off a frenzy of news outlets trying to get an interview with the girl, who gained nationwide attention two years earlier for her uncontrollable hiccuping.

Local radio personality Todd “MJ” Schnitt featured Mee’s mother, her attorney and Griffin’s ex-girlfriend; the Today show also featured Mee’s mother and Trevena. If Trevena should ask for a new bond hearing, perhaps we’ll see whether the publicity tactic worked.

NBC’s press release on the interview is below.

AMY ROBACH SITS DOWN WITH ‘HICCUP GIRL’ JENNIFER MEE FROM JAIL

NEW YORK – April 4, 2011 – – NBC News’ Amy Robach sits down with Jennifer Mee in an exclusive interview from Pinellas County Jail in Clearwater, Fla. where she is awaiting trial for first-degree murder. Mee was known as “hiccup girl” after an uncontrollable case of the hiccups in 2007 garnered her national media attention. During the interview, a tearful Mee discusses her life in jail saying; “This is not the life I wanted to live.” She candidly talks to Robach about charges she is facing. The interview airs tomorrow, Tuesday, April 5 on “Today.”

MAY 15, 2010 FILE PHOTO: Baseball star Garrett Wittels during Florida International University vs South Alabama Jaguars men's baseball at FIU Baseball Stadium.

Monday 12/27/2010

Florida International University baseball star Garrett Wittels and a group of friends were arrested in the Bahamas last week and charged with raping two 17-year-old girls.

The incident took place Dec. 20 at the Atlantis Resort and Casino on Paradise Island. Wittels and two friends were released on $10,000 bond apiece after a court hearing Thursday.

The others allegedly involved in the incident were Robert Rothschild, 21; Jonathan Oberti, 21; Steven Tromberg, 21; and David Shapiro, 21, according to Bahamian Chief Magistrate Roger Gomez in Nassau. All five are from Northeast Miami-Dade County.

The men were arrested Dec. 20. Wittels, Rothschild and Oberti appeared before Gomez three days later.

Gomez granted each a cash bond of $10,000. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 18 before Magistrate Derence Rolle-Davis, Gomez said.

Tromberg and Shapiro were still being held in the Bahamas pending a hearing that could take place as early as Tuesday.

The Bahamian court was closed Monday due to the Junkanoo celebration, which features a street parade with performers dressed in elaborate crepe paper costumes and ringing cowbells, banging drums and blaring horns.

Wittels, 20, an infielder, holds the second-longest hitting streak in NCAA history, and was expected to make a run at breaking the record when the college baseball season begins in February.

In a telephone interview Monday, Wittels’ father, Bay Harbor Islands orthopedist Michael Wittels, confirmed that Garrett had been arrested in the Bahamas. He told The Miami Herald that when all the facts come out, his son would be vindicated.

“Anyone can accuse anyone of anything at any time,” Michael Wittels said. “He’s not doing well, obviously. He’s blown away. He’s devastated that someone would accuse him of this.”

Garrett Wittels met his friends in the Bahamas on Dec. 18. All five attended high school in Northeast Miami-Dade — either Michael Krop Senior High School or Miami Country Day School.

On Twitter, on Dec. 17, Wittels tweeted to the four friends: “Less than 24 hours.” On Dec. 18, he tweeted “About to take off #ATLANTIS. Back Wednesday.” Then he didn’t tweet for a week.

Attempts to reach Shapiro, Tromberg, Oberti, and Rothschild on Monday were unsuccessful.

A source close to the investigation said that blood samples for DNA testing were taken from all five men.

The source, who asked to remain anonymous, said surveillance cameras in public areas of the hotel captured interaction between the suspects and alleged victims.

According to the source, the videos show the girls sitting at a bar in the Atlantis Hotel and Resort, drinking and kissing one another, before gesturing to the suspects to join them.

“They drank too much. They went to the guys’ room. The girls were together. The girls are saying they can’t remember anything,” the source said.

One of the girls threw up on herself, and was given a T-shirt to wear by one of the young men, the source said.

The father of one of the girls called police after his daughter and her companion returned to their hotel room, the source said.

In the Bahamas, the age of consent for sex is 16. But the drinking age is 18.

According to Michael Wittels, Garrett and his friends met the girls at the casino, and the girls followed them willingly to a private party.

Surveillance video exists, Michael Wittels added, showing the girls — and not the accused — were the aggressors, at least in public.

“The next morning, they found out who [Wittels] was, and that was the road they took,” Michael Wittels said. “He hasn’t been found guilty of anything. I hope [the media] doesn’t hang him for merely an allegation. That’s all this is.”

Michael Wittels was adamant that Garrett’s arrest was strictly a personal matter, and not one involving Florida International University, since the arrest occurred far from campus and while Wittels was on winter break.

Wittels is scheduled to resume his chase of Robin Ventura’s NCAA record 58-game hitting streak the weekend of Feb. 18-20. It is not clear what action, if any, the NCAA will take as a result of his arrest.

FIU athletic director Pete Garcia said the department was aware of the situation, but had no comment.

“We will continue to gather any possible information as it becomes available,” Garcia said.

A call to the NCAA’s communications office was not returned on Monday.

In FIU’s final game last season, Wittels extended his hitting streak to 56 games — two short of the NCAA record established by Ventura at Oklahoma State in 1987.

If he is available to play, Wittels would have a chance to tie and break the record when FIU opens its season in a three-game series against Southeastern Louisiana Feb. 18 to 20 at FIU.

Wide receiver Derrell Johnson-Koulianos (15) of University of Iowa runs the ball past defensive end Colin Neely (89) of Michigan St. during the first half of play at Kinnick Stadium on Oct. 30, 2010, in Iowa City, Iowa. Johnson-Koulianos was arrested after police executed a search warrant at his home.

December 8th, 2010

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says Derrell Johnson-Koulianos has been suspended from team activities following the wide receiver’s arrest on drug charges.

Johnson-Koulianos was released from Johnson County Jail after posting $8,000 bail Tuesday. The 23-year-old was expected to make a court appearance Wednesday on charges including possession of controlled substances, keeping a drug house and unlawful possession of a prescription drug.

Ferentz says in a statement that he’s “highly disappointed to learn of the charges.”

Court documents say Johnson-Koulianos was arrested after officers executed a search warrant at his home. Police say investigators found more than $3,000 in cash, marijuana, cocaine and prescription drugs.

Johnson-Koulianos of Campbell, Ohio, caught 46 passes for 745 yards and 10 TDs this season. Jail officials didn’t immediately know if he had an attorney Tuesday night and a telephone listing could not be found for his home address.

—————————————————————————————-

As if the November fourth quarter collapses weren’t enough for the Iowa Hawkeyes, tonight there’s even more disappointment for this 2010 team.

On Tuesday evening, Iowa Hawkeye senior wide receiver Derrell Johnson-Koulianos (DJK) was arrested by Iowa City police on a bevy of drug counts: possession of controlled substances, keeping a drug house and two counts of unlawful possession of a prescription drugs. Investigators also found more than $3,000 in cash, marijuana, cocaine and prescription drugs in DJK’s home, according to the National Football Post.

This season, DJK became Iowa’s career leader in receptions and receiving yards. The senior wide receiver caught 46 passes for 745 yards and 10 touchdowns. He was named to the first-team All Big Ten team.

Throughout the season, DJK had disagreements with Iowa’s football coach Kirk Ferentz and occasionally was not allowed to the speak to the media. For the team’s last game of the season against Minnesota, DJK was on the sidelines at the beginning due to an earlier misbehavior leading up to the game.

DJK is currently being held in Johnson County Jail in Iowa City and is being held on $8,000 bail. He will make an initial court appearance on Wednesday morning.

Needless to say, DJK’s Iowa career has ended.

Ferentz issued the following statement in response to today’s activities, “I am highly disappointed to learn of the charges. Derrell has been suspended from all team activities.”

Katia Zatuliveter on a beach
5 December 2010 Last updated at 07:55 ET

According to the Sunday Times, Katia Zatuliveter, 24, was arrested on the orders of MI5 over espionage claims.

She has been working for Lib Dem MP Mike Hancock, who said she had done nothing wrong and would appeal.

The Home Office said it did not routinely comment on individual cases, nor would it confirm deportation moves.

But a security source is said to have told the Sunday Times that Ms Zatuliveter’s presence was not “conducive to national security”, and the intention was to “show her the door”.

It is believed to be the first time since the end of the Cold War that someone working in Parliament has been accused of spying for the Russians, suggests the Sunday Times.

In an interview with the BBC, Mr Hancock said he was standing by Ms Zatuliveter. He said he had spoken to her on Sunday morning and she told him she had not seen any evidence against her.

“Nobody has shown me any evidence to support the view that she is any way a threat to the UK,” he said. “If she was a threat, when they stopped her in August, they could have removed her then.”

Mr Hancock said she had been arrested at 0700 GMT on Thursday and was subject to a deportation order.

“She was asked to pack a bag, get ready and she was taken away and held in a detention centre in London, and then transferred to another detention centre where she is putting her appeal together,” he said.

Mr Hancock is MP for Portsmouth South, a city which has a large naval base. He also sits on the House of Commons Defence Select Committee.

Despite acknowledging that he has asked for information on the location of nuclear submarines and has probably asked more defence questions than any other MP, he said his work was not “top secret”.

“What on earth was she spying on? There is nothing she was doing for me that was in any way sensitive,” he added.

“I have never read anything in a defence select committee paper or report which was worth anyone believing they had something they could not get from another source.”

Police interviewsBBC South political editor Peter Henley said Ms Zatuliveter was first stopped coming back to the UK from a holiday in Croatia during the summer and had been interviewed by police four or five times since.

Portsmouth South MP Mike Hancock
Mr Hancock says his aide has been taken into detention but has done nothing wrong

“After she was arrested coming back through Heathrow, she has been interviewed by the police several times,” he said. “She had actually left Mike Hancock’s employment but because of that situation with the police, he kept her on and kept her working.

“But she could have gone back to the Caucasus where she lives any time.”

Ms Zatuliveter started working as an assistant to Mr Hancock in 2008, after completing a masters degree at Bradford University. She had previously been an intern at the House of Commons and had worked in Europe.

Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith told Adam Boulton on Sky News it was a cause for concern.

“I would say normally this would be a joke but actually after what’s been going on with some of the spies that Russia seems to have put in all sorts of places, I have to say you have to take it quite seriously,” he said.

Shadow Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said vetting procedures for those applying to work in the Commons might have to be looked at.

She told BBC One’s Andrew Marr Show: “It is important to make sure those are strong enough and secure enough and I’m sure that depending on what happens with this individual case, if there do turn out to have been breaches in security, then the wider security in Parliament would be to be looked at.”

Jenni-Lyn Watson Body Confirmed Leading to Arrest of Ex-BoyfriendSteven Pieper

11:08 AM on 28th November 2010

Police say they have arrested the ex-boyfriend of Jenni-Lyn Watson, whose body was found in a storage shed near Clay Central Park, New York.

Steven Pieper faces arraignment on murder charges, police said at a press conference today.

Watson and Pieper had an on-and-off relationship over an 18-month period, according to Onondaga County district attorney William Fitzpatrick.

The arrest came hours after searchers combing through woods for any sign of  Watson found her body covered in debris behind a storage shed in a swampy area of Clay Central Park.

Mr Fitzpatrick claimed  Pieper was upset when Watson tried to end their relationship in early October.

He said investigators believe Pieper killed her at her parents’ house on November 19, and her body was ‘dumped, frankly, like garbage’ in the park.

Watson’s body was found at 10.30am in the park, where the search had focused since she disappeared on November 19.

Watson’s family has been notified and will identify the remains. An autopsy is planned for tomorrow morning.

Watson, 20, disappeared a day after returning home to Clay for Thanksgiving break.

Undersheriff Warren Darby said on Friday that more than 100 people were searching for her.

He said the search expanded from 600 acres to 1,200 acres. Watson was a junior dance major at Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pa.

Her parents had told investigators it was ‘uncharacteristic’ for the pretty college student to go off on her own without telling anybody.

Miss Watson’s murder has stunned the entire community of Liverpool, which had thrown itself into finding her.

A website and a Facebook page was set up to help find her – the Facebook page attracting more than 27,000 members.

Pictures posted on both show Miss Watson enjoying herself like any girl her age – at a senior ball, at the seaside with friends and at a party in fancy dress as an angel.

Sergeant John D’Eredita of the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office said two search teams and sniffer dogs had combed around 200 acres of woodland bordering an industrial area in Clay, a short distance away from Liverpool.

Miss Watson had just finished her exams at Mercyhurst College when she came back home.

When they came back that that afternoon she had vanished, apparently taking just her mobile phone.

Her wallet and house keys were still indoors.

Michael L. Brea, an aspiring actor who had a small part in the former hit ABC series ‘Ugly Betty,’ has been arrested after he allegedly stabbed his mother with a three-foot sword after a fight early Tuesday in their apartment in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, according to online media outlets.

The 31-year-old actor is alleged to have killed his mother while screaming Bible passages, reports the Associated Press, citing police officials.

Son kills mother with sword
Officers, responding to a call of a family rampage loud enough to be heard by alarmed neighbors, found the victim, identified as 55-year-old Yannick Brea, dead in her Prospect Heights home that she shared with her son and his twin brother, Marcel, who was not home during the attack.

When cops got inside the home, they found Brea kneeling with fatal lacerations to her head in a blood-spattered bathroom, the police said.

Brea had cuts to her head and was pronounced dead at the scene, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly told the AP.

Neighbors on the first and third floors of the Brooklyn apartment told reporters they could hear screams outside and inside the building at about 1:30 a.m. They also claim cops refused to enter her apartment for about an hour despite their pleas.

Arrested
Officers then arrested Michael in a nearby bedroom on charges of murder and criminal possession of a weapon. They found him with a 3-foot sword believed to be the weapon used to kill Brea, Kelly said.

“In a bedroom was her son … with a 3-foot sword,” Kelly said. Michael was taken to Kings County Hospital for a psychiatric exam.

Cops not acted promptly
Neighbors on the first and third floors of the Brooklyn apartment told reporters they could hear screams at about 1:30 a.m.

They also claim cops refused to enter her apartment for about an hour despite their pleas.

“I could hear her groaning inside … She was still alive, but they wouldn’t go in,” Clinton Clare, 52, who lived in the apartment below the Brea family, told the Daily News of New York.

“I heard this wild screaming,” Gregory Clare, 25, who’s father owns the building. He said he heard screams of “‘Repent, repent, sinner, sinner,’ over and over again,” and “‘You never accepted Jesus.'”
Neighbors estimated police waited an hour before bursting into the apartment

“I heard a ‘Help me!’ shriek,” said Vernal Bent, 18, who also lived in the apartment above. “Police kept knocking on the door. Knocking and knocking … All of us kept saying, ‘Open the door.'”

“They just kept saying protocol this and protocol that,” Clare added. “Now a woman’s dead who should be alive if only the police would have listened.”

But NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly said that the patrol cops handled the situation properly.

“It was a barricaded situation,” Kelly said. “When there is a barricade situation the responding patrol officers if possible wait for Emergency Service officers. They’re trained psychological technicians; they have additional equipment that enable them to better protect themselves because you don’t know the type of weapon… They take prudent precautions I believe that was prudent at that time.”

About Michael and his past
Michael has no prior arrests, and no previous domestic violence incidents had been reported at the home, police said.

In addition to the now-canceled ABC sitcom ‘Ugly Betty,’ the Haitian-American actor appeared as a dancer in ‘Step Up 3D,’ a film that was released in August, and starred in a campaign for the energy drink Full Throttle.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Michael’s profile on a Haitian entertainment website says that he opened a Subway sandwich shop on Broadway in Brooklyn in 2007. He also wrote there that he gave away free turkey sandwiches in 2008 on Thanksgiving.

“I remember growing up and my mother was always feeding people who were less fortunate,” WSJ quoted him as writing. “My parents raised me to always share and to give charity in the name of God!”

Rapper T.I. and his wife were arrested late Wednesday on drug possession charges after sheriff’s deputies smelled marijuana coming from their vehicle during a traffic stop.Sheriff’s deputies pulled over the Atlanta-based rapper, Clifford Harris, 29, and his 36-year-old wife, Tameka “Tiny” Cottle, about 10:30 p.m. at 9255 Sunset Blvd. in West Hollywood.

“During the course of the traffic stop, deputies smelled a strong odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle,” L.A. County sheriff’s officials said in a statement.

“A narcotics investigation ensued,” during which T.I. and his wife “were found to be in possession of a controlled substance,” the statement read.

They were taken to the West Hollywood sheriff’s station and booked on drug possession charges.

Sheriff’s officials did not specify why the two had been pulled over and what specific drug they had.

T.I., a multiplatinum rapper with such hits as “Whatever You Like” and “Dead and Gone,” is on probation after serving seven months in prison on weapons charges. He was released earlier this year.

His album “King Uncaged” is set to release this fall.

Cottle, an R&B vocalist who sang in the group Xscape, has starred in the BET reality series “The Tiny & Toya Show.”

Harris and Cottle each posted $10,000 bail and have been released, sheriff’s officials said.
