Though Prince William gets the fancy wedding watched by the world, the stunning bride, and the right to one day be crowned king, it is his brother, Prince Harry, who truly has the lifestyle envied by millions.

Harry, the self-styled playboy prince, has a public image as a dashing, debonair young man with good looks, a charming manner, and a status as undoubtedly one of the most eligible bachelors on the planet.

The question hopeful young women around the world are desperate to know is this: Is Harry single?

A few months back and the answer was a resounding “yes,” as Britain’s third in line to the throne reveled in the young-and-free lifestyle, being seen in the company of a series of stunning women and reportedly enjoying a fling with Norwegian pop starlet Camilla Romestrand. His confident persona, coupled with the fact that not too many women find a royal title a turn-off, meant there was no shortage of interest from the opposite sex.

However, it emerged recently that Harry’s on-off girlfriend Chelsy Davy will accompany him to William’s marriage to Kate Middleton at Westminster Abbey on April 29, as well as two further private functions on the same day.

Chelsy, born and primarily raised in Zimbabwe, had looked very much like the one that got away. Royal insiders say she is the only woman ever to have truly captured Harry’s heart, and the pair dated from 2004 to 2009. In 2007 Harry was said to be so smitten as to be considering proposing marriage, sparking speculation that he could beat his older brother down the aisle.

However, Chelsy’s return to the scene does not automatically mean a full-blown reconciliation. The independent 25-year-old disliked the way she became paparazzi fodder during her relationship with Harry and came to be wary of life in London–preferring the quieter confines of her family’s home in South Africa. Earlier this year, however, she returned to accept a position at a London law firm, meaning she could be in the United Kingdom for the foreseeable future.

Either way, the Harry and Chelsy Show keeps the British papers on their toes, with several publications gleefully reporting that the pair had been smuggled away from a London club in the trunk of a royal vehicle to avoid detection earlier this year.

Whether or not it is accurate to once again refer to Davy as “Harry’s girlfriend,” she is certainly back in the picture, even having played a role in organizing a second bachelorette part for Middleton, along with the bride-to-be’s sister, Pippa.

If her presence is enough to steer Harry clear of the single scene remains to be seen. But if she can’t, perhaps no one can. Preferring to keep things close to his chest, Harry has spoken about Chelsy in public on only one occasion–but it was heartfelt and somewhat moving.

“She is very special,” he said, on his 21st birthday. “I would love to tell everyone how amazing she is. But, you know, that is my private life, and once I start talking about that, then I’ve left my own self open, and if anyone asks me in the future, then they’ll say, ‘Oh well hang on, you told them but why aren’t you telling us?'”

He has said nothing on the subject since, and is not about to break that habit in the weeks leading up to his brother’s wedding. And so the most intriguing question surrounding the royal family is still yet to be answered.

Catherine ElizabethKateMiddleton (born 9 January 1982) is the fiancée of Prince William of Wales. Their wedding will take place on 29 April 2011 at Westminster Abbey, with the day declared a bank holiday in the UK.

Middleton grew up in Berkshire and, after attending Marlborough College, went to the University of St Andrews, where she met Prince William, also studying there, in 2001.

Since her relationship with Prince William began, Middleton has received widespread media attention and there was much speculation that they would eventually marry. On 16 November 2010, the office of the Prince of Wales at Clarence House announced their engagement. The date and location of the wedding were announced one week later.

Middleton was born at Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading, Berkshire.  She is the eldest of three children born to Carole Elizabeth (born 1955, née Goldsmith), a flight attendant, and Michael Francis Middleton (born 1949), a flight dispatcher and later an airline officer for British Airways. Her parents married on 21 June 1980 at the Parish Church of Dorney, Buckinghamshire  and in 1987 founded Party Pieces, a mail order company that sells party supplies and decorations.

Middleton’s paternal family came from Leeds, West Yorkshire, and her great-grandmother Olivia was a member of the Lupton family, who were active for generations in Leeds in commercial and municipal work.  Through Olivia Lupton, her ancestors include The Rev. Thomas Davis, a Church of England hymn-writer.  Carole Middleton’s maternal family, the Harrisons, were working class labourers and miners from County Durham.  Middleton has two siblings, Philippa Charlotte, known as “Pippa”, and James William.  Pippa Middleton, a graduate of the University of Edinburgh, has received press coverage since her sister became famous, with focus on her relationships and lifestyle.  Middleton’s family were in Amman, Jordan from May 1984 to September 1986, where Middleton went to an English language nursery school, before returning to their home in Berkshire.

After her return from Amman, Middleton was educated at St. Andrew’s School in the village of Pangbourne in Berkshire, then briefly at Downe House, before moving on to Marlborough College, a co-educational independent school in Wiltshire, followed by the University of St Andrews in Fife, where she met William and graduated with a 2:1 (Hons) in the History of Art.

In November 2006, Middleton accepted a position as an accessory buyer with clothing chain Jigsaw.

In September 2007, it was reported that Middleton was planning to give up her job as an accessory buyer to become a professional photographer. Some months later, it was announced that she intended to take private classes with photographer Mario Testino, who had taken several well-known photographs of Diana, Princess of Wales, and her sons. Middleton and Testino apparently were introduced by Prince William. Testino later denied that Middleton was going to be working for him. In December 2007, it was also reported that Middleton had moved in with Prince William at Clarence House, the residence of the Prince of Wales in London.  Clarence House later denied this.

On 17 May 2008, Middleton attended the wedding of William’s cousin Peter Phillips to Autumn Kelly, which the prince did not attend.  On 19 July 2008, Middleton attended the wedding of Lady Rose Windsor and George Gilman. William was away on military operations in the Caribbean, serving aboard the HMS Iron Duke.

On 28 February 2010, The Times reported that Middleton was pursuing an invasion of privacy suit against photographer Niraj Tanna who took pictures of her over Christmas 2009, although they were never published in Britain. Middleton has not pursued the claim against the photographer.

Middleton has been featured in several best-dressed lists and was selected by The Daily Telegraph as the “Most Promising Newcomer” in its 2006 list of style winners and losers.  Tatler placed her at #8 on its yearly listing of the top ten style icons in 2007.  She was also featured in People magazine’s 2007 and 2010 best-dressed lists.  Middleton was named as one of Richard Blackwell‘s ten “Fabulous Fashion Independents” of 2007.  In June 2008 Style.com selected Middleton as its monthly beauty icon.  In July 2008 Middleton was included in Vanity Fair‘s international best-dressed list.

Middleton’s unsubstantiated status as the girlfriend of William brought her widespread media coverage in the UK and abroad, and she was often photographed on her daily outings. On 17 October 2005, she complained through her lawyer about harassment from the media, stating that she had done nothing significant to warrant such publicity.

In February 2006, it was announced that Middleton would receive her own 24-hour security detail supplied by the Royalty and Diplomatic Protection Department. This fuelled further speculation that she and William would soon be engaged, since she would not, otherwise, be entitled to this service. No engagement occurred, and Middleton was not granted an allowance to fund this security. Media attention increased around the time of Middleton’s 25th birthday in January 2007, prompting warnings from both Charles and William and from Middleton’s lawyers, who threatened legal action. Two newspaper groups, News International, which publishes The Times and The Sun, and the Guardian Media Group, publishers of The Guardian, decided to refrain from publishing paparazzi photographs of her.

Middleton attended at least one event as an official royal guest, William’s Passing Out Parade at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst on 15 December 2006.

On 14 April 2007 The Sun newspaper broke a “world exclusive” suggesting that Prince William and Middleton had split up.  Other media outlets such as the BBC confirmed the story as the day progressed. The couple decided to break up during a holiday in the Swiss resort of Zermatt.

Clarence House made only one comment about the relationship’s end, according to The Times, stating, “We don’t comment on Prince William’s private life.”  Newspapers speculated about the reasons for the split, although these reports relied on anonymous sources. The original report in The Sun quoted a “close friend of the couple” as saying that Middleton felt William had not been paying her enough attention. The paper highlighted reports that William had been spending time with other young women, and said the Prince, aged 24 at the time of the split, felt he was too young to marry.

A report in the Daily Mail blamed a desire by royal courtiers not to “hurry along” a marriage announcement, and William’s desire to enjoy his bachelor status within his Army career. The Mail also suggested that William’s friend Guy Pelly encouraged the Prince to take a “careless approach” to relationships. The same article suggested that Middleton had “expected too much” in wanting William to demonstrate his commitment to her.

In June 2007, Middleton and William insisted they were “just good friends” following reports of a reconciliation.  Middleton and her family attended the Concert for Diana at Wembley Stadium; she and William sat two rows apart.  The couple were subsequently seen together in public on a number of occasions, and several news sources, including the BBC and the Daily Mail, stated that they had “rekindled their relationship.”  Middleton also joined William and Charles on a deerstalking expedition at Balmoral and attended the wedding of William’s cousin, Peter Phillips, even though William, due to a prior commitment, did not. In April 2008, Middleton accompanied William when he was awarded his RAF wings at the Royal Air Force College Cranwell.  On 16 June 2008, Middleton attended William’s investiture into the Order of the Garter along with the Royal Family.

Prince William and Kate Middleton became engaged in October 2010 in Kenya, East Africa, during a 10-day trip to the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy to celebrate William’s passing his RAF helicopter search and rescue course.  Clarence House announced the engagement on 16 November 2010.

The couple are to marry in Westminster Abbey on 29 April 2011.

It is customary for royal men to receive a dukedom when they marry; possible dukedoms for William after his marriage are Clarence, Cambridge, Sussex, Kendal, Avondale, and Strathearn.  As the wife of a royal duke and prince, Middleton would assume the title of duchess.

In Letters Patent dated 21 August 1996 (shortly before the divorce of the Prince and Princess of Wales) it was acknowledged that, “by convention”, the wife of a son or grandson of the Sovereign is entitled to the style title or attribute of “Royal Highness”.  If William were not given a title then, after the wedding, Middleton would, by convention (unless explicitly vetoed by the Queen), be known as Her Royal Highness Princess William of Wales taking her husband’s first name on marriage (as with Princess Michael of Kent).  If, however, William is given a title, she would be known as “Her Royal Highness The Duchess [or other rank if appropriate] of N”.

On 16 February 2011, Clarence House announced that Middleton’s and William’s first royal tour of Canada would take place in July 2011.  She was formally introduced to public life on 24 February 2011, some two months before the wedding, when she and William attended a lifeboat naming ceremony in Trearddur, North Wales.

When Kate Middleton stands at the altar of Westminster Abbey April 29, little sister Pippa will be by her side, as she so often is. But Middleton’s maid of honor has a slightly different social standing than her sister.

“Pippa has a reputation as being the really fun one, slightly louder and more outgoing than Kate,” Tatler magazine editor Catherine Ostler tells the Royal Diary. “She’s a Chelsea party girl, almost to the extreme.”

It is her job, after all. Pippa Middleton, 27, launched the Party Times, an online party magazine. She has it sorted. She can enjoy the fun and frolics of a royal lifestyle with her big sister Kate but doesn’t have to turn up in the morning for palace duties.

But all that might change at the end of April, when Kate Middleton officially joins the royal family. Part of her official entourage will include a right hand woman. “The rumor is [Pippa] will become her lady-in-waiting,” says Ostler. The role of lady-in-waiting usually goes to a friend or a relative. Princess Diana and William’s current stepmother, Camilla, both enlisted their sisters for the job.

Indeed, Pippa Middleton (Pippa is short for Philippa) is in the thick of the royal posse. She is often photographed with the young royal set: Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, and Prince Harry’s on-off girlfriend Chelsy Davy.

“I think it’s very convenient for her social status that her sister is about to become one of the most famous people on the planet,” ABC News’ royal contributor Duncan Larcombe says.

Carole Middleton

March 14, 2011, 12:01 AM

.—“It is something they absolutely wanted to do, and William graciously accepted,” a senior aide tells Vanity Fair writer Katie Nicholl, confirming the rumor that the Middletons would be making a six-figure contribution to the royal wedding. Traditionally the royal family alone pays the entire cost.

“At first Carole rather enjoyed the attention,” a family friend tells Nicholl of Kate Middleton’s mother. “She seemed to find the whole thing quite dizzying, but the constant nit-picking in the press did get to her.” But, says neighbor and friend Lynda Tillotson, “in the village we are very protective. There’s a lot of camaraderie towards the Middletons. I think they have coped amazingly well, given the attention…. Carole was in here the other day buying candles and she was in great spirits. She’s a great-looking woman, who is always very relaxed, lively, and outgoing…. Michael is a lovely man, very calm and kind.” A family friend tells Nicholl that Michael, Kate’s father, has been a stabilizing influence. “Kate’s feet are still on the ground, largely because of Michael. He doesn’t get too swept up in the grandeur of her new life, and Kate loves him for that. She gets a lot of her characteristics from him.”

It’s these qualities which friends suspect have helped Kate navigate her tumultuous relationship and make her family so appealing to William. “William loves his holidays with the Middletons because they are so relaxed,” explains a friend. “He’s always saying how much fun Carole is. She’s very young in spirit and a great entertainer. One of her and Michael’s favorite after-dinner party jokes is announcing the flights coming into Mustique in their best air-steward voices as they dine alfresco. It always has William in hysterics.”

According to Nicholl, the Middleton children—Kate, Pippa, and James—are incredibly close, and are often seen out together, thus having earned the nickname “the En Masse Middletons.” “They queue up like everyone else and pay at the end of the night,” says Michael Evans, who manages a bar in London’s Mayfair. “They let their hair down, but they are always reserved.”

“Pippa has always had high standards,” friends say of Kate’s younger sister. “Ideally her date has to be wealthy and clever, and preferably he’ll have a double-barrel surname. It will help that she is now the most sought-after singleton in London. Pippa’s a great networker, like her mother. At Edinburgh she made sure she hung out with the right crowd.” And Kate’s brother, James, “is very good-looking and likes to flirt,” says a chum. “He dropped out of Edinburgh, where he was studying En¬glish, after a year. He was a big drinker and loved to party, but he was more interested in drinking and going shooting than girls.”

All three siblings have at some time or another worked for Party Pieces, the financially successful company founded by their parents. Lynda Tillotson says, “Carole was the brains behind the business. She knows what she is doing and she knows where she is going.”

The head for business runs in the family. As James has said, “I really want to promote my company, but I have to be careful. I work really hard—we all do, and I love what I do—but I can never talk about my sister.”

‘Kate’s a lovely girl’ according to the Duchess of Cornwall who has spoken publicly about the soon-to-be Princess for the first time.

Camilla, who has become Kate Middleton’s mentor since Prince William and Kate Middleton announced their engagement, has grown close to her stepson’s fiancee ahead of the royal wedding in just over a month’s time.

One of the Duchess’s granddaughters, Eliza Lopes, three, is going to be a bridesmaid and is apparently looking forward to the big day.

‘Kate’s a lovely girl,’ she said according to The Express. ‘We’re very lucky. I’m very much looking forward to the wedding.’

The Duchess and her soon-to-be stepdaughter-in-law to be were spotted at the Berkley Hotel in Knightsbridge, opened by three Michelin-starred chef Pierre Koffman, in February.

A fellow diner, sitting just two tables away, told the Daily Mail: ‘All four women were talking away like mad and none of the waiters could get a word in edgeways to serve their lunch. Kate looked fantastic in a very short black skirt, black opaque tights, a short jacket and boots.

‘I heard Camilla saying…  “if I can give you one bit of advice…” Kate was really enjoying the moment.

‘I did hear talk of trumpets and someone said “we can’t have trumpets, the ceiling is too high’’, which may have been a reference to Westminster Abbey.’

‘They were all getting on very well and they clearly hadn’t asked for an out-of-the-way table and nor did they attempt to lower their voices,’ the diner said.

‘It was high spirits all round. Kate and Pippa were sitting on banquettes with their backs to the wall opposite Camilla and Laura.

‘There was one moment which was clearly meant to be amusing when Kate said “what happens if William doesn’t turn up?’’ Someone else then asked “is it going to be a sit-down lunch?’’

‘They followed that with talk of menus. I heard chipolatas, sausages on sticks and mini pizzas, but I don’t know whether it was ironic or not.’

Speaking to a group of students at the Covent Garden Academy of Flowers in London yesterday, Camilla said: ‘One of my granddaughters is a bridesmaid. She’s only three and it will be quite nerve-wracking for the little one. But she will enjoy it.’

Camilla joined Kate and her parents, who are believed to be looking at moving into the Duchess’s former home, last week at the Royal Opera House for a performance of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

Prince Harry’s admits he may be too busy with his Artic charity trek to concentrate on his best man duties ahead of William and Kate’s April wedding.

The 26-year-old will join six members of the Walking with the Wounded team for five days as part of their month-long trek to the North Pole before returning home ahead of the big day.

Describing the opportunity as “a real treat”, the prince is hopeful the team, which includes two amputees and two injured servicemen, can help contribute towards the £2m charity target for wounded servicemen.

Prepared to deal with the intense trek and sub-zero temperatures around -40C, Harry is doubtful if he will be able to squeeze in the chance to polish up on his best man speech.

“Writing a speech while stuck in a tent at minus 40C?” he said when speaking to ABC. “If there is time, maybe I might give it some thought, but pens and paper should probably be saved for somewhere back home.

“I am here for these guys and these guys alone, so that part of my life will be kept separate.”

Princess Diana held onto the title Queen of Hearts for decades, but a new series of Royal Wedding Top Trumps has placed Kate Middleton at the top of the pack.

The card game, which goes on sale today features Kate, William and dozens of royals and other guests – as well as a couple of corgis and Westminster Abbey where the wedding takes place on April 29.

Controversially – but perhaps inevitably – the game also includes cards for the late Queen Mother and Princess Diana. Both score N/A for ‘Big Day Rating’.

Prince William and Kate Middleton
Top Trumps

‘Very specials’: Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding day has inspired a new pack of Top Trumps cards

Top Trumps: Kate Middleton beats William on style and press, but he has the edge on VIP status
Top Trumps: Kate Middleton beats William on style and press, but he has the edge on VIP status

The popular game, which was especially popular with children in the Seventies and Eighties, gets players to compare ratings in five different categories. The card with the highest score wins, and the losers have to hand their card to the winner.

Play continues until all but one of the players have run out of cards.

In the Royal Wedding set. The categories are: VIP status, Age, Style Icon, Celebrity Press and Big Day Rating.

The Queen is ranked highest for VIP status, with ten out of a possible ten – ‘trumping’ Princes Charles and William each with nine. Kate still gets a score of just eight – even on her wedding day.

Mother of the bride, Carole Middleton, gets only two out of ten for VIP status – the same as her local pub landlord John Haley, and three fewer than the royal corgis.

To add insult to injury, the card also mentions Carole, a former flight attendant, is ‘Sometimes known as ‘doors to manual’.”

Controversial cards: The pack also includes Princess Diana and The Queen Mum, who do not score in the Big Day Rating category, and Sarah Ferguson who gets zero as she was not invited

Kate Middleton is rated the style Queen of the wedding however with 20 out of 20 – the cards manufacturers clearly have high hopes for the dress, although its own style rating is listed as ‘TBC’.

Diana comes a close second with 19 points. The makers chose to include her as she will be in people’s ‘hearts and minds’ on the wedding day and have listed her age as 36, the age at which she died.

Victoria and David Beckham, two of the wedding’s most famous guests, have to settle for VIP scores of just five but score 18 and 17respectively in the style icon category.

The Queen
Prince Charles
Camilla Parker Bowles

VIPs: The Queen, Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles all score very highly in the VIP category and Big Day Rating

William only gets eight points for style, just two more than his granny the Queen.

St Andrews University – illustrated with a picture of a foam-covered student at the University’s ‘Raisin Monday’ – gets zero for style, despite the fact William and Kate are said to have met at a university fashion event.

The happy couple, unsurprisingly, share maximum points in the Big Day Rating category. Other high scorers include Prince Charles, Kate’s parents and Westminster Abbey.  Sarah Ferguson was selected to appear in the game despite not receiving an invitation to the wedding. She gets zero points in the Big Day Rating category – to St Andrews University’s 50 points.

Carole Middleton
Pippa Middleton
John Haley

Bucklebury’s best: Carole Middleton’s card says she is sometimes known as ‘doors to manual’, Pippa scores highly on Big Day Rating as she is the Maid of Honour, and John Haley gets the same VIP score as the Mother of the Bride

Rating low on style: Westminster Abbey's four out of 20 for style seems a little harsh. But the Corgis and St Andrews University fare even worse
Rating low on style: Westminster Abbey’s four out of 20 for style seems a little harsh. But the Corgis and St Andrews University fare even worse

A spokesman for the game’s makers Winning Moves Ltd said: ‘The Top Trumps Royal Wedding pack features all the great and good who will be at next month’s wedding, including not only Royals but several celebrity guests including Posh, Becks and Sir Elton John.

‘The dress and ring are included too – as are the corgis.

‘There is great demand for all things connected with the Royal Wedding, and we expect this to be very popular. Hopefully it will be played at the wedding itself – it would be lovely to think of the Queen enjoying a game with Prince William.’

Rating low on style: Westminster Abbey's four out of 20 for style seems a little harsh. But the Corgis and St Andrews University fare even worse
Celebrity guests: David and Victoria Beckham score lower than Sir Elton John on VIP status – but very high on celebrity press
The dress
The Ring

Speculation: The dress’ designer has not yet been named so it does not get a style rating yet. The wedding rings will also be revealed on the day

The royal aspiration might be a little ambitious, but the card’s makers have sent a few packs to Buckingham Palace in case guests are stuck with nothing to do on the big day.

For the rest of us, the £5 game is the perfect way to pass time while sipping Twinings’ Royal Wedding blend tea from a C and W branded official teacup.

The icons of British culture are countless. The major ones that come to mind are the big red buses, football, tea, Shakespeare, The Beatles, and the royal family. During her life as a member of the royal family and leading up to her passing, Princess Diana was the “people’s princess”; the country adored her. Her charismatic character, generosity and sense of style won over the masses when she married Prince Charles of Wales.

In April, their eldest son, Prince William, will be marrying the next potential “people’s princess”. Kate Middleton is already becoming an English icon herself. Her story is one the masses find endearing and fairy-tale-like because of her familiar background. She comes from a middle class family; both of her parents worked for British Airways and now own a party supplies store. Kate plays sports, goes out with her friends on the weekend, and loves fashion; she sounds like your average college student, and she was, up until she met the royal prince at St Andrew’s University.

They began dating in 2003 and took the country by storm. Much like Diana, Kate was followed everywhere by the paparazzi. Also like Diana, her charm and grace translated through the camera and the people began to fall in love with her. But what was missing about Kate that Diana was stricken with, were the scandal stories.  The media could find no faults with her. The royal wedding is in the news almost every day. Everyone in England will be getting the day off from school and work on April 29th and millions of those people will be watching the ceremony at Westminster Abbey from their living rooms. It will be an event to go down in history.

Prince William and Kate Middleton today started planned their royal wedding, with the date of the ceremony at the top of the list of items to fix.

July 8 was considered the most likely day for the nuptials and bookies have stopped taking bets on any date that month after Palace sources hinted it was a strong possibility.

But a friend of the couple has now suggested they are keen on tying the knot as early as March, which would avoid conflicting with various other high-profile events.

Tom Bradby, ITV’s political editor and a friend of William who conducted the pair’s joint interview yesterday, said: ‘I think they want to have it in March.

‘Their people have now got to go down to the Palace and sit around and go “right, now who do we invite? Do we invite the Obamas, do we invite the Sarkozys?”‘

Prince William and Kate Middleton
Blissfully happy: Prince William and Kate Middleton yesterday after announcing their engagement

The couple, who have ended years of speculation about their relationship by revealing they became engaged last month, are expected to announce the date within days.

A St James’ Palace spokesman said : ‘Prince William and Miss Middleton have spent the morning in meetings with household staff about the wedding.

‘An announcement about the venue and date will be made in due course after other members of the Royal Family, Mr and Mrs Middleton and the Government have been consulted.’

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh are likely to be involved with the discussions as well as William’s father, Prince Charles.

William and his bride-to-be, who are both 28, are likely to avoid July 29 which is the anniversary of Prince Charles’ wedding to Lady Diana Spencer.

They must also take care to avoid other events already scheduled, such as Prince Philip’s 90th birthday on June 10 and the Trooping of the Colour a day later.

Once the date is decided, the location will have to be fixed with Westminster Abbey considered favourite despite its sad connotations because of Diana’s funeral.

St Paul’s Cathedral, where Charles and Diana wed in 1981, and the Chapel Royal at St James’s Palace are also contenders.

Westminster Abbey
Impressive: Westminster Abbey is considered favourite for wedding venue

St James' Palace
Tight squeeze: The chapel at St James’ Palace is another frontrunner

Of the other likely dates, April 9 is the sixth anniversary of Charles and Camilla’s wedding. In June, the 18th or 25th have been suggested, while William could combine the celebrations with his 29th birthday on June 21.

It is also understood Royal aides have also made ‘discreet overtures’ to senior staff at Westminster Abbey about the dates of August 12 or 13.

St James’ Palace has stressed that the couple would be very hands-on and involved in organising the details of the event.

William proposed to Kate with the same engagement ring worn by his later mother in Kenya last month during a holiday with friends.

After nine years of fevered speculation and one very public break-up, he took the plunge. The only other person in the know initially was Kate’s father Michael, whose permission was sought afterwards.

Owing to the couple’s intense desire for secrecy, even the Queen and Prince Charles were kept in the dark.

They were informed in a telephone call at 7.30am yesterday – just two and a half hours before the engagement was made public.

The Queen swiftly declared herself ‘delighted’ and Charles said he was ‘thrilled’, quipping: ‘They have been practising long enough.’

For his part, Prince Harry just swore in shock but later said he was delighted to be gaining a ‘sister’.

Last night in a revealing TV interview, Kate admitted how hurt she had been when the couple split in 2007. It is now clear that it was William who precipitated the split.

She told ITV: ‘I, at the time, wasn’t very happy about it but actually it made me a stronger person. You find out things about yourself that maybe you hadn’t realised.’

The couple rekindled their romance after a few months apart and, last month, William surprised Kate – or Catherine as she will now be known – with his late mother’s ring after smuggling it in his rucksack on an African safari.

The 28-year-old chose the priceless diamond-encrusted sapphire as a way of including Diana in the ‘excitement’ of his proposal.

It was, he said, a very special heirloom and Kate is ‘a very special person to me’.

‘It was my way of making sure my mother didn’t miss out on today, and the excitement and the fact that we’re going to spend the rest of our lives together.’

Spotlight: Prince William and Kate Middleton being interviewed at Buckingham Palace last night

His gesture did, however, precipitate several moments of panic during the holiday when members of the public offered to carry his bag.

William said: ‘I had been carrying it around with me in my rucksack for about three weeks before that and I literally would not let it go, everywhere I went I was keeping hold of it because I knew if this thing disappeared, I would be in a lot of trouble.’

Kate, also 28, described the proposal as ‘extremely romantic’ and insisted it was a complete surprise.

The couple had been holidaying on the Lewa Downs wildlife conservancy, owned by the family of William’s former girlfriend Jecca Craig, with a group of friends.

They were staying in an open-air Masai lodge called Il Ngwesi, from where William hired a helicopter to take them to a remote lake on the slopes of Mount Kenya where he proposed 12,000ft above sea level.

Although the proposal took place early last month, the couple postponed any public announcement following the unexpected death of Kate’s grandfather, whose funeral took place on Friday.

The wedding, which will take place at St Paul’s Cathedral if not Westminster Abbey, will be the biggest royal event since William’s parents walked down the aisle 30 years earlier.

A royal aide said: ‘There has been much talk about it being a frugal occasion and while they will keep an eye on the cost, they are aware this will be a state occasion and want people to share in their happiness.’

Trooping of the Colour
Pomp: Prince William will need to avoid June 11 because it is the date of the Trooping of the Colour

Another source told the Mail that while the vast cost of the event will be shouldered by the Royal Family, the Middletons have not yet ruled out making some sort of contribution themselves – possibly by paying for the honeymoon which is likely to be in the Seychelles.

Prince Philip
Prince Philip’s birthday is on June 10

Kate admitted yesterday that she was overwhelmed by the prospect of marrying into one of the most famous – and notoriously dysfunctional – families in the world. ‘It’s quite a daunting prospect but hopefully I’ll take it in my stride and William’s a great teacher so hopefully he’ll be able to help me along the way,’ she said.

Asked about the prince’s late mother, she described Diana as an ‘inspiration’ and said she would have loved to have met her.

If Kate was admitting to nerves, her parents were displaying none. Former air hostess Carole Middleton, who has since created a multi-million-pound fortune from her firm which sells children’s party goods, looked nervous but casual in tight-fitting jeans.

In a statement delivered outside their sprawling detached home in Bucklebury, Berkshire, her husband Michael said: ‘I would just like to say that Carole and I are absolutely delighted by today’s announcement and thrilled at the prospect of a wedding some time next year.’

It is understood that Kate favours the idea of being a stay-at-home RAF wife but will take on a small number of royal patronages.

William is based at RAF Valley on Anglesey, where he is working as a Sea King search-and-rescue pilot.

The couple plan to live on the island for the first years of their marriage, in a relatively modest £750-a-month rented farmhouse.

They admit that while they do not plan to have children immediately, the prospect is part of their immediate future.

Mr Bradby said today that the couple crave an ordinary life together in North Wales, where the prince works as an RAF search and rescue helicopter pilot, away from public scrutiny.

He added: ‘I think William is very focused on making sure that, yes, he’s a Royal, but what he really wants is a happy, quiet, domestic family life.

‘He’s pursued that with a certain degree of ruthlessness. What they’ve mastered quite well is the art of coming out and doing something like yesterday and then withdrawing.

When Prince William marries Kate Middleton, all eyes will be on every detail of their day. Is there a pattern set by previous royal nuptials – and what are the traditions?

The groom in uniform, bedecked with medals. The bride dressed by a British designer, her flowers containing sprigs of myrtle cut from the same bush used for Queen Victoria’s bouquet. And cheering crowds.

This is the template for a royal wedding, as celebrated by William’s great-grandparents, his grandparents, his father and mother, aunts and uncles.

More recent nuptials – Edward and Sophie’s, Charles and Camilla’s – have been modest affairs by royal standards, with buffet-style wedding breakfasts and intimate ceremonies in Windsor.

Modern royal weddings mark a significant break with the past, says Fiona Macdonald, author of Royal Weddings: A Very Peculiar History.

“Until the 19th Century and early in the 1900s, the pattern had been largely the same for the past 1,000 years. Royal weddings were usually arranged for political, dynastic and empire-building reasons, and the bride and groom were always of mutually royal rank.

“Marrying a commoner was exceptionally rare. The most famous example was Edward IV marrying Elizabeth Woodville in the 15th Century.”

That was just what Prince Albert did, marrying Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, daughter of a minor Scottish aristocrat, in 1923 at Westminster Abbey.

As the second son, Albert had somewhat more freedom of choice than his brother Edward.

Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon emerges from her home to be married, 1923
The Queen Mother’s wedding day

But Edward abdicated to be with Wallis Simpson, a divorcee, and so Prince Albert became King George VI, his wife became Queen Elizabeth, and their daughter Elizabeth became heir to the throne.

When she was 11, five possible future bridegrooms from four foreign families were under consideration, including the man she eventually fell in love with – Prince Philip of Greece. He renounced his own titles in order to be her consort, and the pair wed at Westminster Abbey in 1947.

A very British church

William and Kate will also become man and wife at Westminster Abbey. Yet it only became the venue of choice for royal weddings late in its 1,000-year history. Prior to World War I, kings and queens, princes and princesses married in private in royal chapels or palaces.

The war meant the British royal family was keen to play down its German heritage, and to strengthen its rapport with the British people. King George V changed the family’s Germanic name to Windsor.

“He also encouraged the use of Westminster Abbey for royal weddings. It was the great British church, founded by a king and where kings and queens were traditionally crowned,” says Macdonald, adding that its size meant a wider circle of guests could be invited.

“Throughout the 20th Century, grand processions through the streets were a feature of almost all royal weddings. There were also street decorations, and sometimes street parties. These were a very powerful way of allowing ordinary people to share in the royal ceremony.”

The venue, the national mood of celebration – no wonder the marriage of Elizabeth and Philip was the definitive modern royal wedding:

  • She wore a gown decorated with patriotic symbols, made from silk from Chinese silkworms – just two years after WWII, Japanese or Italian silkworms were out of the question
  • He wore his naval uniform, with medals earned on active service
  • She laid her bouquet of seasonal flowers, with sprigs of myrtle, on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, just as her mother had done
  • They waved to crowds of well-wishers from the Buckingham Palace balcony
  • They then feasted on French-style dishes named in their honour
  • And, for the first time, the wedding was broadcast live to an international radio audience

In another first, newsreel cameras were allowed into the Abbey itself, although those watching the wedding film only saw the backs of the happy couple at the altar.

Wedding feasts are shows of wealth and power. Highly ornamented foods such as gilded peacocks were common on medieval tables, but the most imposing feature of any modern wedding is the cake.

When Victoria married Albert in 1840, one of their cakes weighed in at 300lb, while that of Prince Albert and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon in 1923 was almost nine feet high. Our own Queen sent pieces of her cake all over the UK, linking her subjects to her in a rather special way.

Royal weddings first became public spectacles in the later half of the 19th Century, with the advent of mass media such as daily newspapers.

“Once reliable telegraphy was up and running, British royal events became news across the Atlantic and throughout the Empire,” says Ms Macdonald.

In 1923, the Archbishop of Canterbury vetoed live radio coverage of Prince Albert’s wedding, who feared men would listen in pubs, while still wearing their hats. Instead, a silent newsreel was shown in cinemas worldwide.

The first royal wedding to be televised live came when Princess Margaret married Lord Snowdon in 1960. But TV audiences did not witness an exchange of vows until 21 years later, when Prince Charles married Lady Diana Spencer.

“By the time of Edward and Sophie’s, and Charles and Camilla’s weddings, there was a mingling of old and new royal wedding traditions – televised, but more intimate and less stately occasions,” says Ms Macdonald.

When William marries Kate in April, intimate is unlikely to be the adjective of choice. For it will be the wedding of a future king and queen.

Prince William and Kate Middleton will marry on Friday 29 April at Westminster Abbey, Clarence House has announced.

Prime Minister David Cameron said it would be “a happy and momentous occasion”. It will be marked by a public holiday across the UK.

The Royal Family and the Middletons will pay for the wedding itself, but the taxpayer will meet the cost of extra security and transport.

The couple, both 28, got engaged while on holiday in Kenya in October.

Westminster Abbey has hosted the weddings of the Queen and Queen Mother and was the venue for Princess Diana’s funeral in 1997.

The prince’s private secretary, Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, said the couple chose the Abbey for its “staggering beauty”, 1,000-year royal history and its feeling of intimacy despite its size.

He said William and Kate were “calling the shots” on the wedding plans, but had a “rather large supporting cast” to help them.

“We know that the world will be watching on April 29, and the couple are very, very keen indeed that the spectacle should be a classic example of what Britain does best,” Mr Lowther-Pinkerton said.

“Prince William and Catherine have made it very clear that they wish everybody to be able to enjoy the day with them.

“Consequently, the day will be a proper celebration for the nation and the realms.

“Having said that, the couple are very mindful of the current situation, and for example, Prince William has already expressed a clear wish that any involvement by the armed forces should rely in great part on those servicemen and women already committed to public and ceremonial duties.”

‘National celebration’

The Dean of Westminster, the Very Reverend Dr John Hall, welcomed the couple’s choice of venue.

“We are very pleased they have chosen Westminster Abbey for their marriage and look forward to the detailed planning for what will be a great and happy occasion for the couple themselves, for their families and friends, for the country and Commonwealth and for well-wishers across the globe,” he said.

Dean of Westminster: “Abbey is a very special place”

The BBC’s Daniela Relph said William and Kate wanted to marry on a Friday in spring and 29 April was chosen because it fell after Easter and Lent and before a busy political programme in May and June.

The extra holiday will fall in the same week as Easter Monday, giving millions of workers a three-day week.

Mr Cameron said: “We want to mark the day as one of national celebration, a public holiday will ensure the most people possible will have a chance to celebrate on the day.”

The Scottish government followed suit in declaring a public holiday.

The wedding date falls six days before the Holyrood elections on 5 May. As 28 working days are needed between dissolving parliament and polling day, parliament could be dissolved a day earlier than expected.

Elections to the Welsh and Northern Ireland Assemblies, some English council polls and the UK-wide referendum on voting reform are due to take place the same day.

But Mr Cameron dismissed concerns that the public holiday would come too close to polling day.

‘A party’

“The timing of the wedding is entirely a matter for the Royal Family. People are perfectly capable of seeing the difference… a day of celebration and a referendum and local election campaign,” he said.

Earlier, there was prolonged applause at the Church of England’s general synod when the Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams expressed “delight” at the forthcoming marriage on behalf of those present.

Addressing the Queen, he said: “Prince William and Miss Middleton will be very much in our thoughts and prayers in the months to come and we know that you and the rest of the family will be supporting them with prayer and wisdom and love as we shall all be trying to do.”

Anti-monarchy group Republic said creating a bank holiday for something “most people are not interested in” was “absurd” and that an extra day off should only be for something everyone could relate to.

Prince William and Kate Middleton speak to the press following the announcement of their wedding.

Prince William proposed to Kate with his mother Diana’s diamond and sapphire engagement ring.

Asked why he had done so, he said: “It is very special to me and Kate is very special to me now as well. It is only right the two are put together.”

Mr Lowther-Pinkerton said the couple were “completely over the moon” about their engagement.

“I’ve never seen two happier people,” he added.

The Press Association reported that a concert in Hyde Park had been proposed to coincide with William and Kate’s wedding.

It said a senior royal aide had refused to confirm the suggestion but had added: “Their view on it would be, ‘Let’s have a party.'”

Earlier, Clarence House said William and Harry would arrive at Westminster Abbey in a state limousine at 1015 BST – leaving almost 40 minutes before the ceremony begins.

It also gave details of the planned flypasts after the wedding.

Three aircraft from the RAF’s Battle of Britain Memorial Flight – a Lancaster, a Spitfire and a Hurricane – will be followed by two Typhoons and two Tornado GR4s in box formation.
