Bears quarterback Jay Cutler is drilled by Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh on Monday night. Cutler admitted the hit was legal.

October 27, 2012

Why does Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh get so much negative attention — even for legal plays?

The answer, according to defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham, is simple.

“Because his name’s Ndamukong Suh,” Cunningham said Friday.

Suh was in the news again this week for, of all things, a legal sack. Suh’s thunderous tackle on Chicago quarterback Jay Cutler on Monday night drew the ire of Bears receiver Brandon Marshall, who accused Suh the next day of a leg whip and dirty play.

An NFL spokesperson said it was a legal play, and Cutler even said the play was “clean.” He said Suh is “a good player.”

Cunningham also had a positive view of the play.

“I thought it was pretty good,” he said. “That’s what he gets paid for. I saw him break free and I knew, I said (Cutler had to) either throw it or get down fast. He stayed up.”

Cutler’s decision made him an easier target for Suh, who flattened him like a pancake. Cutler walked off the field and sat out one play.

“On that particular play, there’s a double (team) on both defensive tackles, and he just broke free right down,” Cunningham said. “And I knew it. I saw it coming. When he broke free, I went, ‘Jay, you’re not going to outrun him now.’ And he closed on him.

“The thing about him is he’s strong, he’s got great balance, and he’s on the spotlight because he breaks through. He’s in the open, so people see things, and they make their judgments and I make mine.”

After a lackluster second season, Suh is closer to his dominating rookie form of 2010, when he had 10 sacks. As a rookie, Suh had 4 1/2 sacks through six games. He has 3 1/2 in the first six games this year.

Suh also is playing smarter. He has only one penalty, for encroachment. Through Week 7 last year, he was flagged four times for penalties that included unsportsmanlike conduct, roughing the passer and a face mask.

“The last two or three weeks,” Cunningham said, “he’s probably played as well as I’ve ever seen him play and practiced that way. So he prepares.”

Ndamukong Suh

November 29, 2011, 5:39 p.m.

Ndamukong Suh is going back to theNFL, this time looking for some leniency.
The league suspended Detroit’s All-Pro defensive tackle without pay for two games on Tuesday, punishing the second-year player for roughing up a Green Bay Packers offensive lineman after the whistle last week. Suh promptly appealed his suspension, trying to remain with his playoff-hopeful teammates when they need him most.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Suh’s hearing will be with Art Shell, an appointed appeals officer who is paid by the league and the NFL Players Association. As of late Tuesday afternoon, the hearing hadn’t been scheduled, but the league has said it will expedite the procedure to give Suh and the Lions an answer before Sunday’s game at New Orleans.

If Suh doesn’t win the appeal, he won’t play against the Saints or in the Dec. 11 home game against Minnesota. He would return Dec. 12 ahead of a road game against Oakland.

Suh is barred from practice and the team’s facility while suspended. He did not return messages left with his agent.

“As a player, you have to appeal it,” said Detroit defensive endKyle Vanden Bosch, the team’s union rep. “I’m sure the NFLPA will be on his side to make sure that he gets a fair hearing.”

If the NFL rejects the appeal, Suh will be watching the Lions (7-4) scramble to keep up in the NFC wild-card race after what the league said was his fifth violation of on-field rules in his first two years in the NFL. And everyone saw the latest one.

Suh lifted his right leg and forcibly stepped on Evan Dietrich-Smith‘s right arm during the third quarter of the Lions’ 27-15 loss in a nationally televised Thanksgiving Day game. Before the stomp seen from coast to coast, Suh shoved Dietrich-Smith’s helmet toward the turf while separating himself from the Packers player on the ground.

It might have hurt Suh’s case when he sounded defiant during his postgame news conference, insisting he didn’t intentionally step on his opponent. After the Lions criticized his conduct Friday, Suh issued an apology to his teammates, organization and fans — not to Dietrich-Smith — as some around the league said his latest outburst proved that he is the NFL’s dirtiest player.
