Bizarre cold-weather phenomena called frost quakes — which generate shaking and ear-splitting sounds likened to exploding bombs — have blasted towns across the Northeast and upper Midwest during this extraordinarily frigid winter.

Thanks to social media reports, researchers have been able to study frost quake reports submitted from Minnesota, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri and Canada and talk to those who felt and heard the unsettling booms and shakes.

King lives on the top floor of a 15-story Toronto building and likened the sound to two bowling balls being knocked together.

“People here are used to hearing regular cracks and pops in the winter as the cold weather causes pipes and structures to expand and contract,” she said. “These frost quakes sound much louder and deeper.”

Another apparent frost quake awoke her around 5 a.m. the next day, she said.

“I went on Twitter (https://twitter.com/lovethinkplay) and found several tweets from people who were awoken by the same thing, at the same time, around the same area as my apartment building,” she said.

Frost quakes have a scientific name: cryoseism. The term also includes the cracking and slipping of glacial ice and the fracturing of frozen lake ice, said Clifford Thurber, a geophysics professor at the University of Wisconsin Madison.

He guesses that the frozen water tables are tens of meters long. The most intense frost quake he’s seen was a magnitude 1.5.

“Even though their source sizes are small, the shaking they cause at the surface can be large because they occur so close to the surface,” Thurber said in an email to the Los Angeles Times. “But typically they will not be felt very far away.”

And social media have given researchers a new way to study the little-discussed temblors.

“Since frost quakes are rare, localized, cannot be monitored and tend to cause only minimal damage, the scientific community has very limited amount of information,” said University of Toronto Scarborough Climate Laboratory researcher Andrew Leung.

They might crack roadways and building foundations, but that kind of result is rare.

Frost quakes can strike after a pounding of rain or when the rapid melting of snow saturates underground streams. When temperatures suddenly reach near 0 degrees, the water table expands and starts cracking the soil and smashing nearby rock formations. Witnesses have described the sounds as being similar to gunshots, exploding bombs and falling trees.

Since the beginning of the year, Leung has tracked numerous frost quakes in freeze-gripped parts of the Midwest.

While visiting Texas during Christmas, King heard news reports of “booms” in her hometown and turned to Twitter to see what people were saying. She assembled a Google Map to allow users to pinpoint and describe their own frost quake experience.

“It amazed me how gracious people were to have a Web page where they could see that other people were hearing and feeling the same strange events as them,” King said.

“Soon enough, it appeared to everyone that these noises were not random due to the sheer volume of reports,” Leung said.

King’s map shows frost quake markers in states such as Maine, New York, Ohio, and Wisconsin. As recently as Sunday, 911 operators in Illinois and Missouri took reports from callers who said they heard booms.

Leung suggested that in addition to social media reports, frost quakes have garnered extra attention becuase they have occurred in a major city, Toronto. It’s more typical to hear of booms once every few years in rural areas of states such as Wisconsin and Massachusetts.

Eleanor Catton was awarded the Man Booker Prize on Tuesday for “The Luminaries,” an immersive tale set in 19th-century New Zealand that explores identity, greed and human frailty.

At 28, Ms. Catton is the youngest winner of the Booker. She was born in Canada and raised in Christchurch, New Zealand.

The Booker is Britain’s most prestigious literary prize, awarded annually to a novelist from Britain, Ireland or a Commonwealth country. The winner receives £50,000, or about $80,000.

Looking stunned after being named the winner, Ms. Catton said that her lengthy, complex novel was “a publisher’s nightmare.”

She then thanked her publishers for striking the “elegant balance between making art and making money.”

The book was released by Granta in Britain and Little, Brown and Company in the United States. At 848 pages, it is the longest book to win the Booker Prize.

The other nominees were “We Need New Names,” by NoViolet Bulawayo, a debut novel about a 10-year-old girl who journeys from Zimbabwe to the United States; “Harvest,” by Jim Crace, a dark, vividly drawn novel about the inhabitants of a small village; “A Tale for the Time Being,” by Ruth Ozeki, about a discovered diary that links people in distant cities; “The Lowland,” by Jhumpa Lahiri, about brothers living in post-colonial India; and “The Testament of Mary,” by Colm Toibin, a slim, 81-page portrait of Mary, the mother of Jesus.

This year’s ceremony, broadcast live from Guildhall in London, was especially momentous because it was the last year before the award is opened to entries from the United States and beyond.

In September, the Booker Prize Foundation announced that in 2014 the prize would be open to all novels written in English and published in Britain, no matter the nationality of the author.

That decision prompted hand-wringing from many in the literary world in Britain, who worried that the reconceived Booker would be limited in its potential to discover and anoint new and unknown authors.

Jonathan Taylor, chairman of the foundation, wrote at the time: “Paradoxically it has not been allowed full participation to all those writing literary fiction in English. It is rather as if the Chinese were excluded from the Olympic Games.”

The winner is selected by the judging panel on the day of the ceremony.

Ms. Catton’s first novel, “The Rehearsal,” was widely praised and nominated for awards including the Orange Prize and the Dylan Thomas Prize. She studied at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and was 25 when she began writing “The Luminaries.”

Despite her age, “Maturity is evident in every sentence, in the rhythms and balances,” said Robert Macfarlane, chairman of the judges. “It is a novel of astonishing control.”

Writing in The Guardian, Kirsty Gunn called “The Luminaries” a “consummate literary page-turner.” “Catton has created her own world in ‘The Luminaries’ — an upside-down, Southern Hemisphere kind of a place with its own astrological calendar that casts its own kind of influence, its own light.”

The Booker bestows an author with an instant boost in sales and recognition.

Some of Britain’s most revered authors, including Peter Carey, Ian McEwan and Julian Barnes, have won the prize.

Last year, the prize was given to Hilary Mantel for “Bring Up the Bodies,” her second Booker victory. She previously won in 2009, for “Wolf Hall,” the first book in her planned trilogy about Thomas Cromwell.

KTVU Channel 2, a Fox affiliate in the San Francisco Bay Area, has issued an apology on Friday after an on-air blunder by an anchorwoman that involved fake names of Asiana flight 214 pilots.

During the noon newscast Friday, co-anchor Tori Campbell told viewers that “KTVU has just learned the names of the four pilots who were on board” the flight that crashed at San Francisco International Airport on Saturday.

She proceeded to read the names that may have originated as a joke online – “Sum Ting Wong,” “Wi Tu Lo,” “Ho Lee Fuk,” and “Bang Ding Ow”— as a TV graphic displayed the names next to a photo of the charred cabin.

“We made several mistakes when we received this information,” KTVU’s apology on its website read. “KTVU accepts full responsibility for this mistake.”

In seeking to verify the names with the National Transportation Safety Board, an unidentified KTVU reporter who made the call to the government agency’s public affairs office didn’t read the names out loud. KTVU didn’t clarify how the names were conveyed to the NTSB representative, who turned out to be a summer intern.

The KTVU reporter also failed to ask for the identify of the NTSB intern who confirmed the spellings of the names.

“We heard this person verify the information without questioning who they were and then rushed the names on our noon newscast,” KTVU’s note read.

The NTSB also issued its apology late Friday afternoon for “inaccurate and offensive names that were mistakenly confirmed as those of the pilots.”

“A summer intern acted outside the scope of his authority when he erroneously confirmed the names of the flight crew on the aircraft,” its statement said. “The NTSB does not release or confirm the names of crewmembers or people involved in transportation accidents to the media. We work hard to ensure that only appropriate factual information regarding an investigation is released and deeply regret today’s incident. Appropriate actions will be taken to ensure that such a serious error is not repeated.”

Saints Row 4

June 25, 2013         6:50PM

THE newest instalment of top-selling video game Saints Row has been banned in Australia, becoming the first title to be refused classification after the introduction of an R18+ rating for games in January this year.

Saints Row IV will be banned from sale in Australia under the ruling, announced by Classification Board acting director Donald McDonald late on Tuesday.

Mr McDonald said the Board had refused an adults-only rating to the game due to “interactive, visual depictions of implied sexual violence not justified by context” and “elements of illicit or proscribed drug use related to incentives or rewards”.

Mr McDonald said Saints Row IV was the first game banned from sale since the new video game classifications came into action six months ago, with other titles including Ninja Gaiden: Razor’s Edge and Mortal Kombat receiving an R18+ rating.

“Apart from today’s decision, since the beginning of the year, the board has classified 17 games R18+ under the new guidelines,” he said.

American-based publisher THQ can appeal the decision to the Classification Board, or censor elements of the game and reapply for a classification in Australia.

It has yet to respond to the board’s decision.

The last game in the series, Saints Row: The Third, received an MA15+ rating in Australia prior to the introduction of the R18+ rating, and no other title in the series has been banned.

Prior to the adults-only rating introduction, however, many big-name games were refused classification in Australia, including Fallout 3PostalLeft 4 Dead 2, and four Grand Theft Auto titles, which feature similar open-world, crime-based gameplay to Saints Row.

June 8, 2013            12:59 p.m.

The gunman accused of killing four people in a Santa Monica shooting rampage Friday was apparently angry over his parents’ divorce and had some mental health issues in the past, a law enforcement source told The Times.

The suspect was identified by five law enforcement sources in Washington and Los Angeles as John Zawahri, in his 20s.

Other sources with knowledge of the investigation said detectives believe the shooting was sparked by a family dispute of some kind but emphasized that the investigation was still in its early stages. The suspect’s past mental health issues occurred when he was juvenile, the law enforcement source said, but no further details were offered.

The sources all spoke on the condition of anonymity because the case was ongoing.

These sources said the alleged gunman’s first victims were his father and brother, whose bodies were found in a burning home.

One thing the investigators were trying to figure out is why the suspect wanted to be driven to Santa Monica College, where he was ultimately killed by police.

Police have stressed that the rampage was not a “school shooting” and that the violence occurred in many places and happened to end on the campus.

But a woman who was carjacked by the alleged gunman said he specifically asked to be taken to the college.

“You’re going to drive me to Santa Monica College and let me out,” Laura Sisk, 41, of Culver City recalled the suspect saying in an interview with The Times.

As of Saturday morning, law enforcement sources said they did not believe the college was the target.

Police were expected to hold a news conference at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The first signs of trouble came about 11:50 a.m. Friday, when gunshots rang out in the vicinity of Kansas and Yorkshire avenues, in a quiet neighborhood near the 10 Freeway.

Jerry Cunningham-Rathner had just watched her son walk out the front door of her home a few minutes earlier when she heard the shots. She rushed outside, fearing he had been hit.

Instead, looking across the street, she saw a house engulfed in flames. A man standing in front of the house was dressed all in black, with an ammunition belt around his waist and a large rifle in his hands, she said.

“He looked like a SWAT officer,” she said.

Firefighters later found the bodies of two men inside the house. Police sources said the men were Samir Zawahri, 55, the owner of the house and the father of the alleged gunman, and one of his adult sons.

Cunningham-Rathner looked on in horror as two cars approached. She said the man pointed his weapon at the first, a Mazda hatchback, and yelled at the driver to stop. Cunningham-Rathner said he motioned for the woman driving the second car to keep moving. When she hesitated, the man opened fire on her silver Infiniti, wounding the driver slightly.

Sisk, the driver in the first car, froze, she said. She knew President Obama was in town for an event a few miles away and thought momentarily the man might be a Secret Service agent. She quickly realized that wasn’t the case.

She begged him to take the car instead. “No. You’re driving,” he said.

Before getting into the passenger’s seat next to Sisk, witnesses said, the gunman fired several shots around the neighborhood with what authorities later said was an “AR-15-style” semiautomatic rifle.

May 18, 2013, 8:00 a.m.

When people ask Carlos Lucero what he does for a living, his answer often stops them in their tracks.

“I throw people off the Stratosphere,” he says jokingly.

Lucero is the man who stands between a person taking the 855-foot plunge to the second level of the Stratosphere Hotel and Casino, or turning away from the controlled fall and taking the Walk of Shame back to the gift shop.

Lucero is the Sky Master, the man who checks the harnesses and straps before thrill-seeking tourists endure the Sky Jump, a ride that opened here in April 2010 and, Lucero says, holds the Guinness World Record for highest commercial decelerator descent.

Think of him as part sky-dive instructor, counselor, bartender and priest.

Many jumpers are panic-stricken. Lucero says soothing things.

Jump masters can’t physically touch any customers to help them jump off; people have to do that on their own power. Instead, he talks to them, making them feel comfortable enough to do something they might be attempting on a dare from friends.

“There is really only two things a person can do — it’s either step off or dive out, and when people try to dive out they hesitate a little bit when they realize how high up they are,” Lucero told the Los Angeles Times.

Most people jump — and are glad they did.

“It’s cool to see some of those clients come back up and say thank you so much for talking me down because that was amazing,” he said.

Sky Jump is different from a bungee jump, where participants can get a running start, jump upside down and do flips. On a Sky Jump, a person is limited to going off the edge of the balcony or leaping off, but Lucero said either way, the adrenaline rush is the same.

Lucero went through three interviews, just to determine what he might do in emergency situations, such as if a person were stuck. He then went through eight weeks of training, learning things like how to apply the harness, and how to be a motivator to get people to jump off a building.

Building the attraction was quite a ride in itself.

Director of Ride Engineering Patrick Brinckerhoff said the challenge came with erecting something on the 108th level of the skyscraper, and there isn’t a cherry-picker tall enough to reach that height. Workers had to take the structure piece by piece in the elevators. It took a year to complete. The ride goes 45 mph while jumpers get a picturesque view of the famed Las Vegas Strip.

Since 2010, 100,000 people have jumped off the Stratosphere to the bull’s-eye that that looks like a small dot from 855 feet up but gets progressively bigger the faster a rider plummets.

Lucero says only 13 people have decided not to take the 17-second plunge down to the bull’s-eye, where jumpers are greeted by onlookers reclining in pool chairs.

His biggest challenge is trying to calm fearful riders who literally cling to the balcony’s steel railing for dear life. Not jumper Kirk Applejohn.

“I work in high places, and the most nerve-racking part of the ride is the first step off the balcony,” the Canadian electrician told The Times. Applejohn said he took the leap during his first visit to Las Vegas. “When I was at the bottom, my first thought was I never wanted this to end.”

Up on the top of the building, Carlos Lucero is smiling.

The fight to point blame in the deadly last voyage of the HMS Bounty is headed for federal court.

Family members of deckhand Claudene Christian, one of two Bounty crew members who died in the sinking, filed a $90 million civil lawsuit this week against the owners of the three-masted square-rigger, which appeared in several Hollywood films, including the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise.

The suit alleges the Bounty was unseaworthy and its captain — Robin Walbridge — was negligent when he set sail with his crew of 15 as Hurricane Sandy steamed toward the U.S. Eastern Seaboard.

Walbridge was also lost in the shipwreck. His body was never recovered after the vessel took on water in stormy seas and sank on October 29. Wind gusts above 100 mph and waves as high as 30 feet flipped Bounty on its side, tossing Walbridge and his 15 shipmates into the Atlantic off the coast of North Carolina. Fourteen crew survived.

The lawsuit accuses the Bounty’s owners of “intentionally placing the lives of the crew at extreme risk for the sole purpose of financial gain.” It also provides detailed examples of allegedly poor maintenance and inadequate crew training, which it says contributed to the sinking and Christian’s death.

“As much as I would like to speak my mind, I can not make any comments as of yet,” wrote Bounty owner Robert Hansen in an e-mail to CNN.

Arguably the best-known traditionally rigged wooden 18th-century replica ship in the world, the Bounty belonged to the New York-based HMS Bounty Organization, which sailed it from port to port as a tourist attraction.

Christian, a 42-year-old former teen beauty queen, had been hired as a Bounty deckhand just five months before. It was her first job aboard a ship.

The Bounty was a replica of the 18th-century British vessel that was rocked by an infamous mutiny. Christian, drawn by the romance and adventure surrounding wooden sailing ships, claimed to be a descendent of Bounty mutineer Fletcher Christian.

During her college days, she cheered for the University of Southern California as one of its Song Girls. Christian also launched a doll-making company. At one point, she co-owned a bar in Los Angeles.

The idea of crewing on a tall ship dawned on her after she visited a replica of Christopher Columbus’ famous wooden vessel La Nina. Her shipmates aboard the Bounty grew to like her always upbeat personality.

The lawsuit comes three months after U.S. Coast Guard and National Transportation Safety Board launched hearings aimed at learning what contributed to the sinking.

Crew members testified that Walbridge knowingly set sail toward Hurricane Sandy from New London, Connecticut, en route to St. Petersburg, Florida. He’s featured in a YouTube video where Walbridge explains how to “get a good ride” out of a hurricane, by sailing “as close to the eye of it as you can.”

“We chase hurricanes,” Walbridge said in the video.

Multiple witnesses also testified that the captain chose to sail knowing there was rot infesting the key parts of the Bounty, including the ships wooden ribs — known as the frames.

Hansen, representing the Bounty’s owners, declined to testify at the hearing, pleading their Fifth Amendment right to avoid self-incrimination.

The lawsuit alleges the owners and Walbridge committed “negligence” and acts of “reckless conduct” by “ignoring unmistakable evidence of rot and deterioration” and the “clear adverse consequences of concealment rather than proper corrective repairs.”

Two days after leaving Connecticut, heavy seas from the approaching storm increased seawater leaking into the ship. The rising water began to overwhelm Bounty’s pumps. Later, the ship’s generators and engines failed, leaving the Bounty at the mercy of Sandy’s fury.

Built in 1960 as the featured prop in the Marlon Brando film “Mutiny on the Bounty,” the 108-foot vessel had been overhauled in 2001 and again in 2006.

The vessel wasn’t licensed to carry passengers out to sea, which allowed operators to avoid requirements reserved for higher classified ships — including a sometimes expensive, time-consuming Coast Guard hull inspection every two years. The ship’s classification also allowed it to hire less experienced crew to serve in officer positions.

The Coast Guard and the National Transportation Safety Board are expected to issue final reports on their investigation as soon as the end of the year.

A SEARCH is continuing off the NSW coast for two people reported missing from a cruise ship when it docked in Sydney yesterday.

NSW paramedic Paul Rossington, 30, and Kristen Schroder, 27, went overboard about 8.50pm on Wednesday, police said after reviewing the ship’s CCTV.

Police and Australian Search and Rescue aircraft and marine vessels are continuing their search throughout the night in an area approximately 60 nautical miles east of Forster.

“We’re going to be going hard today, we’ve got a lot of assets we’re throwing at this, and we’ll make a decision later on in the day,” NSW Police Marine Area Commander Mark Hutchings told the ABC.

But he said while conditions were good, his “hopes are fading” because of the length of time the couple have been missing.

Det Supt Hutchings said the CCTV images indicated the pair went overboard from a deck about halfway up the ship’s side, but added it was too early to say whether they jumped or fell overboard. He did not rule out the possibility of a suicide pact.

The CCTV footage was “very unclear”.

“But it does depict one person going over and then a short time another person going over,” said Det Supt Hutchings.

“We can’t tell from the footage which is which.”

The alarm was only raised yesterday morning – three hours after the ship docked at Sydney’s Circular Quay – when the couple’s luggage was unclaimed. Police conducted a thorough search of the ship, but the pair was not located.

None of the other 2680 people on the cruise ship is believed to have witnessed the incident, he added.

The luxury cruiser Carnival Spirit is operated by Carnival Corp, which in recent years been plagued by a series of high-profile problems.

Last year, 32 people were killed when another of its ships – the Costa Concordia – ran aground off the coast of Italy.

Passengers cruising the Indian Ocean on the Costa Allegra were left without working toilets, running water or air conditioning for three days after a fire cut the ship’s power.

In February this year, passengers aboard the Carnival Triumph spent five days without power in the Gulf of Mexico after an engine-room fire.

Laquint H. Cherry, 18, arrested for claiming he placed explosives in the Jodi Arias courtroom

May 9, 2013

On May 9, 2013, a man was arrested and booked on a felony count related to an act of terrorism after claiming he had planted explosives in the courtroom where the next phase of the Jodi Arias trial is to take place, according to KTAR.

Laquint H. Cherry, 18, alleged tweeted Wednesday, “planted some IEDs in the #jodi arias Superior Court room in Phoenix Arizona tomorrow I’ll become a HERO and also shot by pigs once I unload.”

According to KTAR he was arrested at a local Value Place Motel and initially refused to be taken alive, claiming he was going to kill deputies, but was eventually taken into custody without incident.

A woman who was with Cherry at the time was questioned, but was later released. KTAR reports that she told police she was a former girlfriend who met him on Facebook.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio stated, “The investigation into this threat is not over… Additionally, I am concerned that more dangerous individuals or groups have designs of causing loss of life with either sophisticated explosives or homemade bombs. Because of this, every threat to harm is taken seriously.”

The aggravation phase of Arias’ trial was slated to take place Thursday, after just a day before a jury found her guilty of the first-degree murder of her former lover, Travis Alexander. She could be sentenced to death for the crime.

It is unclear as to whether Cherry’s threat was the reason behind the almost one week delay in the next portion of the Arias proceedings.

Arias was placed on suicide watch after the verdict, due to a subsequent interview she gave to a local Fox affiliate in which she said she would rather die than live her life in prison.

Arias was convicted of Alexander’s 2008 murder, which she was found guilty of committing after the two had spent the day together having sex and taking nude photos. Alexander was stabbed 27 times, his throat was slit from ear-to-ear, and he was shot in the head.

The aggravation portion of Arias’ trial has now been rescheduled for May 15.

Three weeks after an Alberta College of Art and Design student slaughtered a chicken in the school cafeteria as part of a school project, his teacher has been fired.

The instructor, Gordon Ferguson, said Thursday he will fight his dismissal, which he said is in relation to the student’s performance piece.

The student, whose name has not been released, slit the chicken’s throat over the noon hour, washed it, plucked it and then dropped the headless bird into a pot, as if he was preparing to cook it.

The controversial performance shocked cafeteria onlookers to the point where Calgary police were called to the scene. There was an investigation but no charges were laid.

Ferguson, who had taught at the college since 1981 and is the head of the sculpture department, said Thursday he has hired lawyers and is discussing with them whether to take action.

ACAD administration said Wednesday that the school took action in relation to the controversial act, but otherwise declined to comment.

What looked like an unpleasant face off in the stands in Toronto stole the spotlight just moments after Boston Bruins center David Krejci scored the game-winning goal in overtime against the Maple Leafs on Wednesday night. The seemingly awkward moment culminated with actress Elisha Cuthbert, fiancee of Leafs defenceman Dion Phaneuf, rolling her eyes while looking at April Reimer, the wife of Leafs goalie James Reimer.

After a mistake by Phaneuf set up the goal scored by the Bruins against her husband, April turned around and flashed an icy glare over her shoulder in the general direction of the star of “Happy Endings.” Cuthbert responded with that epic eye roll. The exchanged glances immediately sparked conversation on social media, particularly in Ottawa and amongst those who watch “Happy Endings.”

Theories why Elisha Cuthbert rolled her eyes at April Reimer? I’m going with “Reimer said she doesn’t watch Happy Endings.”

— Andrew Bucholtz (@AndrewBucholtz) May 9, 2013

Apparently aware the look was being interpreted as a sign of discord between them, Cuthbert and Reimer both went to Twitter to clear the air. As they recounted it, they shared an eye roll of solidarity in reaction to a loud fan sitting nearby.

ld police boat padstow harbor ll 130506 wblog Speedboat Ran Over Family, 2 Dead, 4 Struggling

May 6, 2013              2:48pm

The survivors of a boating accident the killed a father and daughter are battling “life threatening”  injuries suffered when the out-of-control speedboat ran over them, official said today.

Nick Milligan, 51, an executive with the British television network BSkyB, was killed along with his 8-year-old daughter Emily on Sunday when they were thrown from their boat near the coast town of Padstow, in Cornwall, England.

The boat roared out of control in ever tightening circles, striking Milligan and Emily, killing them.

Milligan’s wife and three younger children were also tossed overboard in the accident and were also run over by the boat. Victoria Milligan, 39, Amber, 12, Olivia, 10 and Kit, 4, were all airlifted to a hospital.

Superintendent Jim Colwell of Devon and Cornwall police described their injuries “life threatening” and “serious, potentially life changing.”

It’s not clear what happened that the family was tossed into the water.

Witness Simon Lewins, a dog walker, told the BBC that the boat ” kept going off in ever decreasing circles. The screams coming from the people in the water were pretty bad.”

The mayhem ended when water skiing instructor Charlie Toogood was able to jump on board the boat and stop the engine, preventing it from injuring more people in the water. It is believed that Toogood managed to get a rope around the propeller of the speedboat to try to reduce its speed before jumping on board. Lewins described the water skiing instructor as a ”hero.”

Colwell said that “if people hadn’t come to their assistance in the manner they did, I’m confident that this incident would have been far worse in terms of the overall death toll.”

Colwell said that forensic experts have started a mechanical examination to determine what caused the boat to get out of control. One of the key question they will be focusing on is why the so called “kill cord” didn’t stop the boat. The “kill cord” is designed so that when the boat’s driver falls from the vessel with the cord attached, it cuts the engine.

Tributes were pouring in for Nick Milligan. His brother, Max Milligan,  described him as an “extremely loving father, husband, son and brother, who doted on his family.” At a press conference, he said that the fact that ”he and my delightful niece died in their favorite place at the end of a gloriously sunny bank holiday weekend provides us with a tiny glimmer of light.”

BSkyB described him as a ”a great friend and colleague for many years and his loss will be felt across our company and the industry. Our very deepest sympathies are with his family at this time.”

A wallet lost 66 years ago inside a wall of a San Marino home contained this photo of the owner's high school sweetheart. (Courtesy of Thomas Robles / April 11, 2013)

May 5, 2013              9:17 a.m.

When construction workers discovered a wallet lost 66 years ago inside the wall of a San Marino home, little did three City Hall clerks know they were about to be in for a days-long sleuthing expedition that would, at its end, reunite a father’s romantic quest with his surviving children.

The brown leather bi-fold held plenty of clues: a World War II-era Navy ID, honorable discharge papers, regular and commercial driver’s licenses, a California Department of Employment card, two pay stubs for $1.50-per-hour insulation contracting work and a Social Security card.
All of them bore the name Arthur Robles, a Los Angeles resident born Aug. 28, 1924.

But there were intriguing mysteries too.

Along with a 1934-series $5 silver certificate were a black-and-white photo of a pretty teenage girl posing in a lush garden, and a 1947 pocket calendar marked with names and dollar amounts.

Victoria Marshall, Lisa Carlson and Janet Ruiz of San Marino’s business license and building permit counter received the wallet on April 9 and began their investigative journey.

They quickly learned Robles had died in 2001 at age 76, but the Central California cemetery where he was buried pointed to a next-of-kin — Thomas Arthur Robles of Moorpark, whose number they found in a telephone directory.

Shortly after the three reached Thomas Robles — a 57-year-old former Los Angeles city firefighter who now works for an insurance company — on April 11, he and his sister, Debbie Chacon, of Simi Valley, headed to San Marino City Hall.

“We were all excited because we wanted to meet Arthur’s family. We’d grown an attachment to this person we didn’t know,” Marshall said.

Still, one anxiety persisted: What if the girl in the photo wasn’t the mother of Thomas Robles and Debbie Chacon?
Marshall had her answer that afternoon, when Robles’ children identified the mystery woman as Julia Tahan — their dad’s high school sweetheart who became his wife in 1949. She was, in fact, their mother.
Tahan died in 2000 at age 72.

And those names and numbers on the pocket calendar?
“We heard the story growing up that dad had borrowed money from aunts and uncles to buy my mother an engagement ring,” Chacon said. The names and numbers were the records of those loans.

“It was so touching to see that with my mother’s picture in the wallet,” Chacon added.

Thomas Robles and Chacon shared their parents’ wedding picture and a photo of their father in his Navy uniform — he worked on troop-landing boats in the Pacific theater — with the three clerks who had solved the mystery.

Because 1940s driver’s licenses included thumbprints instead of photos, the photos provided the first time Marshall, Carlson and Ruiz had seen Arthur Robles. Holding a relic of his father’s early life was “surreal,” the younger Robles said.

“It was like having my dad back for a little while.”

A cargo plane crashed in Afghanistan killing all seven crew members on board Monday.

All seven were U.S. citizens, the cargo carrier National Airlines said.

The crash happened shortly after takeoff from Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan, the U.S.-based company said. The Boeing 747-400 was en route to Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Watch this video

“This was a purely cargo flight and no passengers were aboard,” a company statement said. “Cargo consisted of vehicles and routine general cargo.”

National specializes in moving freight for the military and businesses, as well as charter passenger service in the Middle East.

The cause of the crash has not been determined.

But Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said his group shot down the aircraft and that “several foreign soldiers were killed.”

That claim could not be immediately verified. But in the past, the Taliban has exaggerated casualty figures.

“This is a devastating loss for our family and we’ll work diligently with authorities to find the cause,” National Airlines President Glen Joerger said in the statement.

“Our focus at this time is on the family members of those we’ve lost, and on assisting the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) and Afghanistan Civil Aviation Authority in their investigations.”

Six of the victims were from Michigan, National said, and they were identified as Brad Hasler, Jeremy Lipka, Jamie Brokaw, Rinku Summan, Michael Sheets and Gary Stockdale.

The other victim, Timothy Garrett, was from Kentucky.

April 28, 2013            6:26 AM ET

An unemployed bricklayer shot two Italian policemen in a crowded square outside the premier’s office Sunday just as the nation’s new government was being sworn in, investigators said.

The gunman’s intended target was politicians, a top Italian official said after interviewing him.

Mired in recession and suffering from soaring unemployment, Italy has been in political paralysis since an inconclusive February election. Social and political tensions have been running high among voters divided between center-left, conservative and anti-government political parties.

Sunday was supposed to be a hopeful day when debt-ridden Italy finally got new government to solve its many problems. But shots rang out in Colonna Square near a busy shopping and strolling area shortly after 11:30 a.m. just as Premier Enrico Letta and his new ministers were taking their oaths at the Quirinal presidential office about a kilometre away.

The suspected gunman, dressed in a dark business suit, was immediately grabbed by other police outside Chigi Palace, which houses the premier’s office and other government offices. The politicians were supposed to have met at the palace later Sunday for their first Cabinet meeting.

Rome Prosecutor Pierfilippo Laviani told reporters he had questioned the alleged assailant, who was taken to a hospital with bruises after being wrestled to the ground. He identified the man as Luigi Preiti, 49, from Calabria, a southern agricultural area plagued by organized crime and chronic unemployment.

Laviani said Preiti had “confessed everything” and didn’t appear mentally unbalanced.

‘He was desperate’

`’He is a man full of problems, who lost his job, who lost everything,” the prosecutor said. “He was desperate. In general, he wanted to shoot at politicians, but given that he couldn’t reach any, he shot at the Carabinieri” paramilitary police.

One of the policemen, shot in the neck, was in critical condition. The other, shot in the leg, suffered a fracture, doctors said.

The shooting “was the tragic gesture of a 49-year-old unemployed man,” Interior Minister Angelino Alfano told reporters after briefing Letta and his new Cabinet.

A woman passing by during the shooting was slightly injured, Rome’s mayor said. It was unclear if she was grazed by a bullet or hurt in the panic sparked by the gunfire.

The 46-year-old Letta had nailed down a coalition deal only a day ago between two bitter political enemies — his center-left forces and the conservative bloc of ex-Premier Silvio Berlusconi.

Letta will speak to Parliament on Monday, laying out his strategy to reduce joblessness while still sticking to the austerity measures needed to keep the eurozone’s No. 3 economy from descending into a sovereign debt crisis. He will then face confidence votes.

A video surveillance camera on the Parliament building caught the attacker on film just before and during the shooting, Italian news reports said.

The attacker was walking at a steady pace along a narrow street that leads from the square outside Parliament’s lower house to the square outside the premier’s office, when police officers appear to have stopped him to ask where he was going.

About 90 minutes later, Letta and his ministers were due to enter Chigi Palace. It was not immediately known if the attacker knew about their arrival.

Shortly after police approached him, he began firing, according to the surveillance camera.

An AP television producer saw the two wounded Carabinieri officers in the square outside the palace. One of them lay on the pavement with blood pouring out of his neck.

Alfano said the alleged gunman wanted to kill himself after the shooting but ran out of bullets. He said six shots were fired in all. The gunman used a semi-automatic pistol whose serial number had been scraped off, Sky TG24 TV said.

Security stepped up

The interior minister said security was immediately stepped up near key venues in the Italian capital, but added authorities were not worried about possible related attacks.

“Our initial investigation indicates the incident is due to an isolated gesture, although further investigations are being carried out,” he said.

Doctors at Rome’s Umberto I Polyclinic said a 50-year-old brigadier had been hit in the neck by a bullet that damaged his spinal column and was lodged near his shoulder. The doctors said it wasn’t yet known if the spinal column injury had caused any paralysis.

The head of St. John’s Hospital, Gianluigi Bracciale, told Sky TG24 TV the second officer suffered a broken leg from a gunshot. He said Prieti didn’t appear to have any injuries other than bruises.

Preiti’s uncle, interviewed by Sky, said the alleged gunman had moved back to his parents’ home in Calabria because he could no longer find work as a bricklayer. “He was a great worker. He could build a house from top to bottom,” said the uncle, Domenco Preiti.

The shooting sparked ugly memories of the 1970s and 1980s in Italy, when domestic terrorism plagued the country during a time of high political tensions between right-wing and left-wing blocs.

The new Cabinet ministers were seen smiling in a group photo as news of the shooting broke.

“The news arrived after the swearing-in,” said Dario Franceschini, one of the new ministers.

The ministers were kept briefly inside for security reasons until it was clear there was no immediate danger.

Rome was jammed Sunday with tourists and residents enjoying a warm sunny morning on the last day of a four-day weekend.

The teenage suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings, whose flight from the police after a furious gunfight overnight prompted an intense manhunt that virtually shut down the Boston area all day, was taken into custody Friday night after the police found him in Watertown, Mass., officials said.

The suspect, Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19, was found hiding in a boat just outside the area where the police had been conducting door-to-door searches all day, the Boston police commissioner, Edward Davis, said at a news conference Friday night.

“A man had gone out of his house after being inside the house all day, abiding by our request to stay inside,” Mr. Davis said, referring to the advice officials gave to residents to stay behind locked doors. “He walked outside and saw blood on a boat in the backyard. He then opened the tarp on the top of the boat and he looked in and saw a man covered with blood. He retreated and called us.”

“Over the course of the next hour or so we exchanged gunfire with the suspect, who was inside the boat, and ultimately the hostage rescue team of the F.B.I. made an entry into the boat and removed the suspect, who was still alive,” Mr. Davis said. He said the suspect was in “serious condition” and had apparently been wounded in the gunfight that left his brother dead.

A federal law enforcement official said he would not be read his Miranda rights, because the authorities would be invoking the public safety exception in order to question him extensively about other potential explosive devices or accomplices and to try to gain intelligence.

The Boston Police Department announced on Twitter: “Suspect in custody. Officers sweeping the area,” and Mayor Thomas M. Menino posted: “We got him.”

President Obama praised the law enforcement officials who brought the suspect into custody in a statement from the White House shortly after 10 p.m., saying, “We’ve closed an important chapter in this tragedy.”

The president said that he had directed federal law enforcement officials to continue to investigate, and he urged people not to rush to judgment about the motivations behind the attacks.

The discovery of Mr. Tsarnaev came just over 26 hours after the F.B.I. circulated pictures of him and his brother and called them suspects in Monday’s bombings, which killed three people and wounded more than 170. The case unfolded quickly — and lethally — after that. Law enforcement officials said that within hours of the pictures’ release, the two shot and killed a campus police officer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, carjacked a sport utility vehicle, and led police on a chase, tossing several pipe bombs from their vehicle.

Then the men got into a pitched gun battle with the police in Watertown in which more than 200 rounds were fired and a transit police officer was critically wounded. When the shootout ended, one of the suspects, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, a former boxer, had been shot and fatally wounded. He was wearing explosives, several law enforcement officials said. But Dzhokhar Tsarnaev managed to escape — running over his older brother as he sped away, the officials said.

His disappearance, and fears that he could be armed with more explosives, set off one of the most intense manhunts in recent memory. SWAT teams and Humvees rolled through residential streets. Military helicopters hovered overhead. Bomb squads were called to several locations. And Boston, New England’s largest city, was essentially shut down.

Transit service was suspended all day. Classes at Harvard, M.I.T., Boston University and other area colleges were canceled. Amtrak halted service into Boston. The Red Sox game at Fenway Park was postponed, as was a concert at Symphony Hall. Gov. Deval Patrick of Massachusetts urged residents to stay behind locked doors all day — not lifting the request until shortly after 6 p.m., when transit service in the shaken, seemingly deserted region was finally restored.

As the hundreds of police officers fanned out across New England looking for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, investigators tried to piece together a fuller picture of the two brothers, to determine more about the bombing at the Boston Marathon.

The older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, (tam-arr-lawn tsar-NAH-yev) was interviewed by the F.B.I. in 2011 when a foreign government asked the bureau to determine if he had extremist ties, according to a senior law enforcement official. The government knew that he was planning to travel there and feared that he might be a risk, the official said.

The official would not say which government made the request, but Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s father said that he traveled to Russia in 2012.

“They had something on him and were concerned about him and him traveling to their region,” the official said. The F.B.I. conducted a review, examining Web sites that he had visited, trying to determine whether he was spending time with extremists and ultimately interviewing him. The F.B.I. concluded that he was not a threat. “We didn’t find anything on him that was derogatory,” the official said. The F.B.I. released a statement late Friday confirming it had scrutinized Mr. Tsarnaev but “did not find any terrorism activity, domestic or foreign.” It had requested more information from the foreign government, it said, but had not received it.

Now officials are scrutinizing that trip, to see if he might have met with extremists while abroad.

The brothers were born in Kyrgyzstan, an official said, and were of Chechen heritage. Chechnya, a long-disputed Muslim territory in southern Russia, sought independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union and then fought two bloody wars with the authorities in Moscow. Russian assaults on Chechnya were brutal, killing tens of thousands of civilians as terrorist groups from the region staged attacks in central Russia.

The older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, traveled to Russia from the United States early last year and returned six months later, on July 17, a law enforcement official said. His father, Anzor Tsarnaev, said his son had mostly stayed with him at his home in Makhachkala, the capital of the Dagestan region, but that the two men had also visited Chechnya.

“We went to Chechnya to visit relatives,” Mr. Tsarnaev said in an interview in Russia.

The trip will come under intense scrutiny to determine whether he met with extremist groups or received training, current and former intelligence and law enforcement officials said. Kevin R. Brock, a former senior F.B.I. and counterterrorism official, said, “It’s a key thread for investigators and the intelligence community to pull on.”

Anzor Tsarnaev, who maintained that his sons were innocent and had been framed, said that during the trip to Chechnya his son had “only communicated with me and his cousins.”

The hunt for the bombing suspects took a violent turn Thursday night when two men believed to be the Tsarnaev brothers fatally shot an M.I.T. police officer, Sean A. Collier, 26, in his patrol car, the Middlesex County district attorney’s office said. Soon after, two armed men believed to be the brothers s carjacked a nearby Mercedes S.U.V. and drove off with the driver in the car.

At one point, the suspects told the driver “to get out of the car or they would kill him,” according to a law enforcement official. But then they apparently changed their plans, and forced the man to drive, the official said. At one point, the older brother took the wheel.

“They revealed to him that they were the two who did the marathon bombings,” the official said, adding that the suspects also told the car owner that they wanted to head to New York. At one point they drove to another vehicle, which the authorities believe was parked and unoccupied. There, the suspects got out and transferred materials, which the authorities believe included explosives and firearms, from the parked car to the sport utility vehicle.

The victim was released, uninjured, at a gas station on Memorial Drive in Cambridge, law enforcement officials said.

After he called the police, they went off in search of his car, and a frenzied chase began.

The police and the suspects traded gunfire, and “explosive devices were reportedly thrown” from their car, law enforcement officials said. A transit police officer, Richard H. Donohue, was shot in the right leg and critically wounded.

Officer Donohue had nearly bled to death from his wound when he arrived at the hospital, said a person familiar with his treatment. The hospital’s trauma team gave him a transfusion and CPR, and got his blood pressure back up, but he was still on a ventilator, the person said.

Finally, the brothers faced off against the police on a Watertown street in what officials and witnesses described as a furious firefight.

A Watertown resident, Andrew Kitzenberg, 29, said he looked out his third-floor window to see two young men of slight build engaged in “constant gunfire” with police officers. A police vehicle “drove towards the shooters,” he said, and was shot at until it was severely damaged. It rolled out of control, Mr. Kitzenberg said, and crashed into two cars in his driveway. The gunmen, he said, had a large, unwieldy bomb that he said looked “like a pressure cooker.”

“They lit it, still in the middle of the gunfire, and threw it,” he said. “But it went 20 yards at most.” It exploded, he said, and one man ran toward the gathered police officers. He was tackled, but it was not clear if he was shot, Mr. Kitzenberg said.

The explosions “lit up the whole house,” another resident, Loretta Kehayias, 65, said. “I screamed. I’ve never seen anything like this, never, never, never.”

Meanwhile, Mr. Kitzenberg said, the other man got back into the sport utility vehicle he had been driving, turned it toward officers and “put the pedal to the metal.” The car “went right through the cops, broke right through and continued west.”

He left behind his older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who had been gravely wounded, and who was taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

Dr. David Schoenfeld, who was catching up on paperwork at his home in Watertown after midnight on Friday, had heard the sirens, and then the gunfire, and the explosions. So he called Beth Israel Deaconess, where he works in the emergency room, and told them to prepare for trauma patients for the second time this week.

He said that he arrived about 1:10 a.m. Fifteen minutes later, an ambulance carrying Tamerlan Tsarnaev pulled up. He was handcuffed, unconscious, and in cardiac arrest, Dr. Schoenfeld said.

As a throng of police officers looked on, Dr. Schoenfeld and a team of other trauma doctors and nurses began to perform CPR.

“There was talk before the patient arrived about whether or not it was a suspect,” Dr. Schoenfeld said. “But ultimately it doesn’t matter who it is, because we’re going to work as hard as we can for any patient who comes through our door and then sort it out after. Because you’re never going to know until the dust settles who it is.”

The trauma team put a breathing tube in the patient’s throat, Dr. Schoenfeld said, then cut open his chest to see if blood or other fluid was collecting around his heart. His handcuffs were removed at some point during the resuscitation attempt, he said, because “when the patient is in cardiac arrest and we’re doing all these procedures, we need to be able to move their arms around.”

The team was unable to resuscitate him, and pronounced him dead at 1:35 a.m. Only as they prepared to turn the body over to the police did Dr. Schoenfeld look closely at the patient’s face and see that he resembled one of the suspects whose pictures had been released by the F.B.I. hours earlier. “We all obviously had some suspicion given the really large police presence,” he said, “but we didn’t have a clear identification from the police.”

Dr. Schoenfeld, whose emergency room treated a number of people injured in the bombings on Monday, said he had not had time to process what he had been through early Friday.

“I can’t say what I’ll be feeling as I reflect on this later on,” he said in an interview before Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was captured. “But right now I’m more concerned with everybody who’s still out there and still in harm’s way.”

He added, “I worry about everybody in the city, that everyone’s going to be O.K.”

04/23/2013             6:03 pm EDT

Federal officials have dismissed charges against Paul Kevin Curtis, a Mississippi-based Elvis impersonator originally charged in connection with mailing ricin to lawmakers, because an “ongoing investigation has revealed new information,” a federal official said in a court filing late Tuesday.

Curtis was released from jail earlier Tuesday. His attorney has scheduled a press conference for Tuesday evening.

FBI agents were searching the home of another Mississippi man, Everett Dutschke, on Tuesday afternoon. Curtis’ lawyer told HuffPost that a grand jury has indicted Dutschke.

8-year-old Martin Richard, seen in this Facebook photo, was killed in the explosions at the Boston Marathon

04/16/2013             5:38 am EDT

Martin Richard was standing near the finish line, waiting for his father to complete the grueling Boston Marathon on Monday, when an explosion took his life.

He was 8 years old and in the third grade.

Neighbor Jane Sherman told WCVB that Martin was a typical little boy, who loved to ride his bike and play baseball.

Martin’s mother, Denise, was hospitalized with “grievous injuries,” The Times of London reported. She reportedly underwent surgery late Monday for an injury to her brain.

His 6-year-old sister, a first grader whose name was not made public, lost her leg in the blast, WHDH reported.

The status of his father, William, has not been released. A third child was reportedly unharmed in the explosion.

The Richard family hails from the Ashmont section of Dorchester, Mass. Last night, locals gathered at Tavolo Restaurant to remember Martin and his family.

“They are beloved by this community. They contribute in many ways. That’s why you see this outpouring,” City Councilor at Large Ayanna Pressley told The Boston Globe “It’s surreal, it’s tragic, it’s incomprehensible. Everyone here tonight is trying to comfort one another and be prayerful.”

The explosions on Monday afternoon claimed the lives of at least two other people. More than 140 were also injured.

A homeless man who won $50,000 on the Lotto says he will continue living in a tent and use his new-found wealth to help his friends.

Dennis Mahurin, who has been living rough in Bloomington, Illinois, since 1978, couldn’t believe his luck after winning the jackpot from a $3 scratch ticket he bought at a petrol station last week.

But the 59-year-old says he will not leave the tent he has lived in for the last 20 years and will instead give $100 each to all the other homeless people he knows.

Home sweet home: The tent where Lotto winner Mr Mahurin sleeps every nightHome sweet home: The tent where Lotto winner Mr Mahurin sleeps every night

Jackpot: The winning ticket which Mr Mahurin bought in a petrol station last weekJackpot: The winning ticket which Mr Mahurin bought in a petrol station last week

Describing the moment he found out he had won, Mr Mahurin told News25: ‘I scratched it off right here in my tent. I took it to the gas station. I thought it was a thousand dollars. She said ‘nope’, I said ‘oh I messed up didn’t I’. She says ‘no it’s fifty thousand’. And I almost fell over.’

After tax, Mr Mahurin will have around $35,000. He says he will visit his son, have dental work done, put some in savings and maybe buy a new tent.

But his main aim is to use his good fortune to give others in a similar position a helping hand.

‘All the other homeless people round here – I’ve already made up my mind I’m gonna give them each $100,’ he said.

Generous: Each of Mr Mahurin's homeless friends is set to receive $100 each thanks to his good fortuneGenerous: Each of Mr Mahurin’s homeless friends is set to receive $100 each thanks to his good fortune

Life-changing: The money will help Mr Mahurin see his son and have dental work doneLife-changing: The money will help Mr Mahurin see his son and have dental work done

Mr Mahurin says he understands why some might find his decision to stay in his tent strange.

‘You’ve got a job and a place to stay,’ he explained to one TV reporter. ‘I’m living in a tent. Happy as can be. It’s in my nature.’

The manager of the gas station, Sandra Rankin, told ABC News that no one has ever won such a large amount at her store before.

‘It’s quite exciting, when I got the phone call I was jumping up and down and mostly it was because of who it went to,’ she said.

‘He has been coming out ever since I started here. He is a great guy, has an awesome sense of humor. I care deeply for him and he is a very decent gentleman. He comes into my store three to four times a day.’

Mingo County Sheriff Eugene Crum was fatally shot Wednesday outside the Mingo County courthouse, WCHS reports.

The courthouse was evacuated and placed on lock down, WSAZ reports.

WCHS reports that a suspect has been taken into custody.

The suspect was shot but is “alert and talking,” and has been taken to the hospital, according to the Charleston Daily Mail.

Crum was eating lunch when a suspect drove by and fired at him, a county commissioner said, according to the Charleston Daily Mail. West Virginia House Delegate Justin Marcum said Crum enjoyed having his lunch in a place where he could see a former “pill mill,” the paper reported.

While campaigning for Mingo County Sheriff, Crum made drug control a central part of his platform, according to Charleston Gazette. House Finance Chairman Harry Keith White said Crum had been “aggressive” in combating drugs during his brief time as Mingo County Sheriff.

“Eugene Crum has exceeded my highest expectations as Mingo County Drug Enforcement Investigator and now as Mingo County Sheriff,” said Mingo County prosecutor C. Michael Sparks in January, according to WOWK-TV.

A mother shot and killed two of her young children and critically wounded another before taking her own life in a Denver home, police said Thursday.

The surviving child, Isabel Perez, was hospitalized in critical condition in a deep coma, said Dr. Claudia Kunrath of Denver Health. Police said the child is 2.

Police identified the mother as 23-year-old Mayra Perez. The medical examiner’s office said her 4-year-old daughter died of multiple gunshot wounds and her son, who was nearly 2, died of a single gunshot wound.

Police have not discussed a possible motive.

Relatives have said the woman quarreled Tuesday night with her husband, who left their home to cool off and found the bodies when he returned early Wednesday.

“Whatever reason drove her to this, it’s going to be in God’s hands,” the children’s uncle Tony Nunez said at a news conference. “He will be the judge of her.”

Nunez didn’t take questions and said his focus is on prayers for his niece. He thanked community members who have offered support.

Police said no arrests have been made, and they weren’t searching for any suspects.

The house where the bodies were found is in an industrial area near the National Western Stock Show complex.

Myles Wilkinson won a fantasy football contest to attend Super Bowl XLVII, but his dreams of going to the big game went up in smoke because of a 1981 pot bust.

According to a story by the CBC, the 50-year Canadian man was denied entry to the United States this week because of a conviction for possession of two grams of marijuana over 30 years ago.

Wilkinson, a Seattle Seahawks fan from Vancouver Island, beat out almost four million other players to win the trip to see the San Francisco 49ers play the Baltimore Ravens. But when he got to the airport on Thursday, U.S. customs agents brought up an arrest the man had when he was 19. They denied him entry to the country and ended any chance of making it down to New Orleans for a memorable weekend.

“I had two grams of cannabis. I paid a $50 fine,” Wilkinson told CBC. “I can’t believe that this is happening, for something that happened 32 years ago.”

CBC said Bud Light Canada, who sponsored the contest, invited Wilkinson to their Super Bowl party in Vancouver after hearing about his unfortunate situation.

That’s a nice gesture and Vancouver is a very beautiful city, but let’s be blunt: It’s also the most depressing consolation gift ever.

Hadiya Pendleton, 15, a student at King College Prep, was killed Tuesday at a Chicago park near a school, authorities said. (Photo provided by dnainfo.com)

2:08 p.m. CST                January 30, 2013

Ten-year-old Nathaniel Pendleton Jr. recalled the way his big sister Hadiya would often greet him with a few gentle slaps on his cheeks whenever she came home from school.

“She said it was with love,” he said.

Nathaniel etched “I miss you” and “I love you” on his arm Wednesday, a day after losing his only sibling when a gunman opened fire on a group of students just blocks from King College Prep on the South Side.

“It’s very painful to see your big sister get slaughtered,” the soft-spoken Nathaniel said, tearing up as went through photos of his big sister on his phone.

As he spoke, his sister’s death was dominating a news conference by Mayor Rahm Emanuel as a particularly violent January in Chicago draws to a close.

Emanuel called Hadiya “what is best in our city” and urged anyone with information about the slaying to come forward.

“If anybody has any information, you are not a snitch, you’re a citizen,” the mayor said. “You’re a good citizen in good standing if you help.”

The mayor said he talked this morning with Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy, “going over what we need to do, what differences we have to do, what other tactics we have to adopt.” He did not say what plans he and McCarthy discussed.

Questions about the slaying were also asked during the daily briefing by the press secretary for President Barack Obama. Reporters noted that Hadiya had participated in inaugural festivities for Obama last week, and that the shooting occurred about a mile from Obama’s home in the Kenwood neighborhood.

“The president has more than once, when he talks about gun violence in America, referred not just to the horror of Newtown or Aurora or Virginia Tech or Oak Creek but to shootings on the corner in Chicago or other parts of the country,” press secretary Jay Carney said. “This is just another example of the problem that we need to deal with.”

Carney was asked if the shooting carried any lessons for Obama since it occurred in a state with tough gun laws.

“We need to take action to reduce gun violence,” Carney replied. “We need to take action on common-sense measures that do not infringe upon our Second Amendment rights. . .but that make sure that we’re doing everything we can in a responsible way to reduce this violence, to protect our children, including Hadiya Pendleton and others.”

Hadiya was hanging out with her volleyball team at Harsh Park after taking exams Tuesday afternoon. About a dozen teens had taken shelter under a canopy during a rainstorm when a boy or man jumped a fence in the park, ran toward them and opened fire around 2:20 p.m., police said.

Hadiya was wounded in the back and a 16-year-old boy — also a student at King — was shot in the leg, police said. The attacker got into an auto and fled, police said. No arrests have been reported.

Today, Hadiya’s family was inside their South Side home exchanging stories about her quirks and sense of humor.

Kimiko Pettis, Hadiya’s 32-year-old aunt, laughed when she talked about her niece’s goofy personality. “We really miss her,” Pettis said. “She was a remarkable young lady and such a great asset to our family.”

Hadiya was a busy but lighthearted teen, always trying to get a laugh from her family. Just Tuesday, she put on what she thought was a “fabulous outfit” and make-up before school.

“She popped out of the bathroom saying. ‘I’m ready!’ ” Pettis said, throwing her arms in the air.

Pettis said her niece loved Coldplay and Maroon 5. “You could not find any urban music on her phone,” Pettis said with a laugh. “And she had two left feet.”

Last year, Hadiya traveled with her school band to perform at Marti Gras in New Orleans, Pettis said. Last week, she  had performed at President Barack Obama’s inauguration festivities. This year’s travel plans included Dublin and Paris with the band, her aunt said, a trip she was very much looking forward to.

Though only a sophomore, Hadiya had aspirations to become a pharmacist or a journalist, Pettis said. Because she couldn’t decide, family encouraged her to do both with a possible double major. She had interest in attending Northwestern University, her aunt said.

Hadiya was such a whirlwind of activity, relatives would jokingly tell her to slow down.

“There were a lot of good opportunities that were coming her way. She was just taking them all,” said Lakeisha Stewart, 37, Hadiya’s godmother. “She was the kid who you had to say, ‘Slow down, you can’t do everything.’ ”

Just last week, at Obama’s inauguration, Hadiya sent her godparents a text and a photo of her and her teammates in Washington, D.C., Stewart said.  She had not gotten the chance to talk to Hadiya about the details of the trip since she returned from the East Coast.

Hadiya’s parents made sure she stayed involved in school, said her godfather, Damon Stewart, 36, an attorney and Chicago police officer. He said she was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“He life was dominated by her activities and the things she was into,” he said.

“I’ve known this little girl her entire life,” added Lakeisha Stewart. “I can’t think of a moment that this child did anything wrong. She always strived to do the right thing.”

At King today, Bria Carter and two friends said the halls of the school were unusually quiet as students mourned Hadiya’s death.

“People are crying at school,” said Carter, 17, a friend of Hadiya. “Those who knew her are so hurt.

“She was an amazing person — always positive,” Carter said. “She was one of those people everyone loved. She was the sweetest thing.”

Brothers Addison and Zion Morgan said many of their classmates took to social media Tuesday night to express ther emotinos.

“Based off of the tweets, everyone is surprised and shocked by this,” said senior Addison Morgan, 17.

Freshman Zion Morgan, 15, said he was in a U.S. History class with Hadiya.  “She was always smiling,” Zion Morgan said. “She would always raise her hand in class.”

At the park, neighbors along the well-maintained North Kenwood block could not remember any trouble there before.

The small park’s bright blue and orange playground equipment is often used by toddlers down the street, a neighbor said, but otherwise remains quiet.

The neighbor, who declined to be named, lives next door to the park and said it’s a “perfect neighborhood.”

Teens and older children are not often visitors of the park, he said. The block is filled with “Harvard attorneys,” “business owners” and other executives, the neighbor said. “No one knows about our block,” he said. “It’s a quiet place.”

Hadiya’s godmother agreed. “It amazed me when I found out what park it was,” she said. “Nothing I have ever heard ever goes on over there.”

The shooting occurred about a mile from Obama’s Kenwood home, but Emanuel said the circumstances do not carry symbolic significance.

“It’s not the mile from a house. Wherever it happens in the city of Chicago is where I consider it,” the mayor said while talking to reporters at a news conference about a West Humboldt Park company building new seats for CTA buses.

“While you may say it’s a mile from the president’s house, my view is, it’s in the city of Chicago, regardless of where it happens,” Emanuel added.

Investigators in Philadelphia are trying to unravel a baffling mystery after a hogtied pediatrician was found dead and on fire in the basement of her home.

Police found Melissa Ketunuti, 35, a beloved doctor at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Monday in her Center City basement after her dog walker called 911. Her wrists and ankles were bound behind her back, and she was on fire, police said.

Investigators said she had been strangled with a rope around her neck. Strangulation appeared to be the cause of death, police say, but they are awaiting the results of an autopsy.

With no evidence of forced entry, police wonder whether she knew whoever attacked her.

“We don’t know if she walked in on individuals inside of her property,” Philadelphia police Capt. James Clark said. “We don’t know if it’s a known doer or an unknown doer.”

There’s no clear motive, and nothing appeared to have been stolen. Police have questioned Ketunuti’s boyfriend, but he has not been declared a suspect.

ABC News consultant and former FBI agent Brad Garrett said the culprit is likely someone Ketunuti knew.

“This is extremely personal. I can’t think of anything more heinous or cold to do to another human being,” he said. “The boyfriend can provide all kinds of leads: who she knows, what problems she was having at work.”

Ketunuti lived alone on a quiet street, and had been there for about three years.

“[She was] super pleasant, really nice,” one neighbor said. “Just super friendly.”

Ketunuti’s hospital issued a statement Tuesday that she was “a warm, caring, earnest, bright young woman with her whole future ahead of her,” adding that she will be deeply missed.

“It’s going to be just a horrible thing for her family,” a neighbor said. “She was just a very nice person, very full of life.”

January 20, 2013                5:54AM

ALGERIA’S four-day hostage standoff came to a bloody end overnight when the country’s special forces stormed the remote desert gas plant and killed 11 militants, but not before they in turn executed seven hostages, the state news agency reported.

The report, quoting a security source, didn’t specify if any hostages or militants remained alive or give the nationalities of the dead.

“The (army) assault took place mid-morning. Eleven terrorists lost their lives along with the foreign hostages,” the security source told AFP.

“We think they were killed in retaliation” for the army attack, the source said.
Algerian authorities estimated that around 30 militants occupied the Ain Amenas on Wednesday and with 18 already reported dead, it appears the hostage crisis involving hundreds of plant workers is finally over.
Experts have begun to clear the complex of bombs planted by the Islamists, says Sonatrach, the Algerian firm that runs the gas plant jointly with Britain’s BP and Norway’s Statoil.
British Defence Minister Philip Hammond calls the loss of life appalling and unacceptable. He says “it is the terrorists that bear the sole responsibility for it.”
Mr Hammond was speaking at a news conference with US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta, who said much remains “sketchy” but “we know that lives have been lost.”
Mr Panetta refused to criticise Algeria. “They are in the region, they understand the threat from terrorism … I think it’s important that we continue to work with (Algiers) to develop a regional approach.”
“We’re pressing the Algerians for details on the exact situation,” said Mr Hammond.
British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Britain must prepare itself for “bad news,” and that “the large majority” of Britons originally caught up in the crisis were safe, with “fewer than 10” at risk or unaccounted for.
France said no more of its nationals are being held hostage. French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said on France 3 television that a Frenchman had been killed in the attack and other captured French nationals had been freed.
Mr Le Drian said he could not confirm that a French national, who he said used the surname Le Guen, was among the attackers at the Algerian gas plant but that he expected to find out soon. He said Le Guen had been in neighbouring Mali for the past several weeks.
The French national killed in the assault has been named as Yann Desjeux, a former special forces soldier who was also the co-owner of a restaurant in the southwestern beach town of Anglet.
President Francois Hollande said French troops would stay in Mali as long as is needed “to defeat terrorism” in the West African country and its neighbours.
There was no official count of how many hostages were still being held by the final group of militants holed up in the gas refinery overnight, but the militants themselves had reported they were still holding three Belgian, two Americans, a Japanese and a Briton.

Earlier, Islamist gunmen remained holed up with an unknown number of foreign hostages at a gas plant in the Algerian desert, amid uncertainty over what the army was doing to free their captives.

A Romanian national has been killed and another injured in the Algeria hostage crisis, Romania’s Prime Minister Victor Ponta says.

“We have just had confirmation of the death of one of the five Romanians held hostage in Algeria,” he told a press conference on Saturday.

Foreign Minister Titus Corlatean said authorities in Bucharest did not yet know how the hostage died.

Two freed British hostages identified as Peter (centre) and Alan (left) with an unidentified Norwegian hostage outside a police station in Ain Amenas, Algeria.

The foreign ministry is keeping the families of the five Romanians abreast of events as they develop.

The ministry had previously announced that three Romanians had been freed, but did not say if any others were still being held by Islamist gunmen at a remote gas plant in the Algerian desert.

The final raid came after the situation appeared to be at a stand-off. More than 72 hours after the heavily armed militants staged a deadly raid on the complex, and two days after Algerian special forces launched a botched rescue bid widely condemned as hasty.

On Friday, a security official said troops were trying to reach a “peaceful” end to the crisis, before “neutralising the terrorist group that is holed up in the plant and freeing a group of hostages still being held there.”

Earlier, The gunmen, cited by Mauritania’s ANI news agency, said they were still holding three Belgians, two Americans, one Japanese and a Briton, although Belgium said there was no indication that any of its nationals were being held.

Amid the virtual news blackout in Algiers, harshly criticised by the local media, world leaders were taking a tough stand on insisting that the remaining hostages be freed.

ALGERIA

Freed Algerian hostages arrive at Algiers airport after they were released by Islamist captors from a gas plant in In Amenas. Seven foreign hostages and 11 Islamist gunmen were killed on Saturday when the desert stand-off ended in a bloodbath.

US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta said Washington would “take all necessary steps to protect our people” from the threat of al-Qaida-affiliated militants in north Africa.

“Whether or not that involves assisting others with military operations, whether it involves developing in a cooperative way operations there, those are areas that I think remain to be decided,” he told the BBC.

On Friday, Mr Panetta had said Washington was “working around the clock” to secure the safe return of Americans, after at least one was confirmed dead.

A US official said a military aircraft had begun to help evacuate survivors, but gave no estimate of the number of US hostages.

Earlier, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said at a news conference with Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida that Washington remained “deeply concerned about those who remain in danger. Utmost care must be taken to preserve innocent life.”

Mr Kishida urged Algeria to place the “utmost priority” on ensuring the remaining hostages’ safety.
In Tokyo, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe ordered his government to do everything possible to ensure the safety of those Japanese unaccounted for in what he called “an extremely despicable” incident that “can never be forgiven.”

Hammond Panetta

“I would like you to do your best to confirm the safety of the Japanese and rescue them by using every possible means,” Mr Abe told top government officials after cutting short a trip to Southeast Asia.

The UN Security Council “condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attack” and “underlined the need to bring perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism to justice.”

Algerian news agency APS quoted a government official as saying the kidnappers, who claimed to have comefrom Niger, were armed with machineguns, assault rifles, rocket launchers and missiles.

They belong to a group known as “Signatories in Blood,” led by a Algerian Mokhtar Belmokhtar, a former senior al-Qaida commander in north Africa. The group is demanding an end to French intervention in neighbouring Mali, Mauritania’s ANI news agency quoted sources close to Belmokhtar as saying.

Belmokhtar also called for exchanging American hostages for the blind Egyptian sheikh Omar Abdul Rahman and Pakistani Aafia Siddiqui, jailed in the US on charges of terrorist links.

But US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said “the United States does not negotiate with terrorists.”

Philippine worker Jojo Balmaceda, employed by British oil giant BP which operates the In Amenas gas plant jointly with Norway’s Statoil and Sonatrach of Algeria, recounted overnight how he escaped.

Mr Balmaceda and three fellow Filipinos were taken at gunpoint as they arrived for work, tied up and thrown into a truck along with Japanese and Malaysian hostages, the GMA network reported in the Philippines.

He escaped when the truck was hit by an explosion but sustained a gunshot wound to his head which had affected his hearing, the station added.

An official in Manila said 34 Filipinos had been evacuated from the gas field and were on their way home.

The fate of two Malaysians believed to have been caught up in the crisis remains unknown, the foreign ministry said, while three others were safe.

France said two of its nationals had returned safely but it had no word on two more, and Romania said three of its citizens had been freed.

Earlier, Algeria informed France that a French citizen was killed in the hostage rescue operation at a remote gas plant seized by Islamist militants, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius confirmed today.

“One of our countrymen, Yann Desjeux, has unfortunately lost his life. Three other of our citizens, who were also at the site during the attack by the terrorists, were saved,” Mr Fabius said.

As criticism mounted over the haste of an Algerian military assault on the Sahara desert site, APS news agency said earlier that special forces had freed more than 670 hostages, among them 573 Algerians and about 100 foreigners.

“Around 100 foreigners out of 132 hostages seized by a terrorist group that attacked the Tiguentourine gas plant on Wednesday have been freed,” APS cited a security official as saying.

British Prime Minister David Cameron warned the In Amenas gas plant was a “large and complex site and they are still pursuing terrorists and possibly some of the hostages in other areas of the site.”

An AFP photographer saw trucks delivering empty coffins to the hospital at In Amenas, where the wounded had been taken.

Some of those who had escaped or spoke of their ordeals said explosives had been wrapped around their necks. Others hid, petrified, under beds, in gaps above ceilings or wherever they could.

Algeria Kidnapping

Alexandre Berceaux, who works for France’s CSI Catering, said he hid in his room before being freed by Algerian troops on Thursday evening.

“I was under the bed and I put boards everywhere just in case,” Mr Berceaux said.

“I had a bit of food, a bit to drink. I didn’t know how long it would last.”

Algerian special forces launched their rescue bid on Thursday, a day after kidnappers seized the plant to avenge what they said was Algiers’ support for French air strikes in neighbouring Mali.

The kidnappers said 34 captives were killed in the army assault, but an Algerian security source called that “fantasy,” saying 18 of more than 30 Islamist gunmen were killed.

“We left the complex by a back door the terrorists didn’t know about,” said one freed Algerian.

FRANCE-CONFLICT-ALGERIA-MALI-KIDNAP

A rescued hostage receives treatment in a hospital In Amenas.

“We waved a white cloth so the army would know we were workers.”

Another Algerian, who works for US firm Halliburton, described the Islamist assault.

“There were around 300 or 400 of us, employees of BP and other firms. They gathered us all together, Algerians and foreigners, in the canteen which they rigged with explosives,” he said.

“The army moved in at about midday” on Thursday.

Britain’s Mr Cameron said he was “disappointed” not to have been told in advance about the rescue bid, and said “significantly” fewer than 30 Britons remained at risk at the field, operated jointly by BP, Norway’s Statoil and Sonatrach of Algeria.

BP said a “small number” of its staff remained unaccounted for, adding it had evacuated hundreds of workers from the complex and other fields. Japanese plant builder JGC said it had accounted for 17 of its employees, but not another 61. Statoil said the fate of eight Norwegian workers was unknown.

A Northern Ireland man, Stephen McFaul, escaped. His brother said he fled when the convoy he was in came under army fire.

More than a decade ago, Ray Nagin was elected mayor of New Orleans on a vow to root out corruption in a city plagued by decades of it. On Friday, the former mayor was indicted on charges he lined his pockets with bribe money, payoffs and gratuities while the chronically poor city struggled to recover from Hurricane Katrina’s punishing blow.

The federal indictment alleges that city contractors paid Nagin more than $200,000 in bribes and subsidized his trips to Hawaii, Jamaica and other places in exchange for his help securing millions of dollars in work for the city.

The charges against Nagin are the product of a City Hall corruption investigation that already has resulted in guilty pleas by two former city officials and two businessmen and a prison sentence for a former city vendor.

The case also punctuates the reversal of political and personal fortune for Nagin, who had what New Orleans Magazine editor Errol Laborde called “rock star status” soon after his election in 2002.

Nagin, a former cable television executive, took office with an image as a largely apolitical businessman ready to root out corruption. “The media bought into that 100 percent. They used the term ‘crackdown on corruption,'” Laborde said Friday.

But Nagin’s popularity and support waned in the years after Katrina. The federal investigation of his administration was mushrooming by the time he left office in 2010.

Rafael Goyeneche, head of the nonprofit watchdog agency the Metropolitan Crime Commission, remembers Nagin entering office with a call for the public to let authorities know about corruption.

“To go from the mandate that he was elected with to reading this indictment today and finding out that he was in many respects, if these allegations are true, a complete fraud, is eye-opening,” Goyeneche said Friday.

In inauguration remarks May 6, 2002, Nagin promised a City Hall “where permits and licenses are provided quickly, predictably and honestly; where contracts are awarded based on what you can do, not who you know.”

Soon afterward, his administration’s probe into alleged corruption in taxi cab regulation resulted in numerous arrests.

“We’re basically trying to send the signal … that what has happened in the past, and the way people played in the gray areas, is no longer acceptable,” Nagin said at the time. “We need to get in step with what’s done in the rest of the country.”

Friday’s indictment accuses Nagin of accepting more than $160,000 in bribes and truckloads of free granite for his family business in exchange for promoting the interests of a local businessman who secured millions of dollars in city contract work after the 2005 hurricane. The businessman, Frank Fradella, pleaded guilty in June to conspiracy to commit bribery and has been cooperating with federal authorities.

Nagin, 56, also is charged with accepting at least $60,000 in payoffs from another businessman, Rodney Williams, for his help in securing city contracts for architectural, engineering and management services work. Williams, who was president of Three Fold Consultants LLC, pleaded guilty Dec. 5 to a conspiracy charge.

The indictment also accuses Nagin — who now lives in Frisco, Texas — of getting free private jet and limousine services to New York from an unidentified businessman who owned a New Orleans movie theater. Nagin is accused of agreeing to waive tax penalties that the businessman owed to the city on a delinquent tax bill in 2006.

ONE of the five men to stand trial in a fast-track court on charges of gang-raping and murdering a student on a bus in New Delhi, has allegedly been tortured in jail.

One of the defence team, A.P. Singh told reporters that his client Vinay Sharma, a gym instructor, had been badly beaten up in jail by fellow prisoners and was in agony when he appeared before the district court on Thursday.

“Vinay Sharma was badly tortured in jail by other inmates who pounced on him. He was not in a position to stand up in court because he was in great pain,” Mr Singh said.

“It is sad the jail authorities cannot provide security to them,” he added.

India Gang Rape

Ajay Prakash Singh, centre, a lawyer for two of the accused, speaks to journalists outside the Saket district court complex where the accused are to be tried.

A magistrate sitting at a district court in the Saket area of southern Delhi committed the five defendants to a more senior sessions court which is authorised to handle such case and which will begin its hearings next Monday.

“The magistrate has committed the case to the sessions court which is fast-track,” Sadashiv Gupta, the lawyer for fruit-seller Pawan Kumar, told reporters outside the court.

The court would hold its first hearing on the case on January 21, Mr Gupta added.

Kumar and four other adults are all accused of murder, rape, robbery and kidnapping in connection with the attack on the 23-year-old medical student on December 16.

The case against a sixth defendant, who says he is 17, is being heard separately by a juvenile court.

The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, died 13 days later in a Singapore hospital from intestinal injuries sustained during the assault in which she was also violated with a rusting iron bar.

A male companion, with whom she had spent the evening at the cinema, was also badly injured in the attack which ended when the pair were thrown off the bus.

The gang-rape triggered mass protests across India and shone the spotlight on the shocking levels of sexual violence against women.

Prosecutors say they have DNA evidence, including blood stains, linking the six defendants to the killing as well as a host of witnesses.

The defendants’ lawyers have said that their clients were beaten by police and forced into confessing.

The government, stunned by the mass protests over the case and criticism of India’s notoriously sluggish justice system, has promised that the case will be dealt with swiftly.

If convicted, the adult defendants could be sentenced to death and many of the protesters who rallied in the aftermath of the attack demanded that all rapists be hanged.

The prosecution had requested the five adult defendants to be handcuffed while in custody on the grounds that they were dangerous, but defence lawyer Mr Gupta said the court had rejected such a move.

“The handcuffing of the suspects has been rejected as per our application opposing handcuffing,” he said outside the court.

A wide ranging gagging order has been imposed on reporting of proceedings inside the courtroom.

It is not yet known whether those restrictions will remain in place throughout the trial.

January 14, 2013

An Air Force veteran known as an experienced hiker died along with two of his young sons – 10-year-old Dominic and 8-year-old Grant – after apparently getting lost on a desolate Missouri trail in heavy rain and rapidly plunging temperatures, a sheriff and a family member said Monday.

Reynolds County Sheriff Tom Volner said David Decareaux, 36, of Millstadt, Ill., and his sons were found Sunday, a day after they ventured out with their 4-month-old yellow Labrador retriever on the Ozark Trail, about 110 miles southwest of St. Louis.

Decareaux died at the scene, and the boys were declared dead at a hospital after hours of efforts to revive them failed, the sheriff said. Volner said authorities believe the three died of exposure to the elements, though autopsies were planned.

The dog was found near the victims and survived.

Volner says Decareaux knew the popular trail, which runs through a sparsely populated area of southeast Missouri, but apparently took a wrong turn and was ill-equipped for temperatures that sank from 60 degrees to the 20s as the day progressed. Heavy rain also began to fall, making the trail all but impassable. Decareaux had been wearing only a light jacket, while one of his sons was clad in a fleece pullover, and the other a sweater.

Volner said there are no caves or other places of refuge along the trail.

A passer-by spotted the hikers more than three hours into their journey and asked if they needed a ride back to the Brushy Creek Lodge near Black, where Decareaux’s wife and their three other children — ages 12, 4 and 2 — were staying. But Decareaux declined, telling the man they could make it back, the sheriff said.

“They just missed their turn back to the lodge,” the sheriff said. “By that time, their light played out. You don’t have any ambient light down here because there are no cities or towns. When it’s dark you can’t see the back of your hand.”

Officials at the lodge called the sheriff’s department about 7 p.m. Saturday, concerned that the hikers had not returned. A search involving more than 50 volunteers on foot, horseback and in vehicles lasted until about 12:30 a.m. Sunday, when flash-flooding in creeks forced searchers to back off until daylight.

The bodies of Decareaux and the boys were found soaking wet Sunday morning, their dog beside them.

The tragedy crushed Decareaux’s father-in-law, who described the family as tightly knit, “always on the go and adventurous.” Decareaux was a doting father and spiritual man who had retired from the Air Force in recent years and was working with the Defense Department in a job he couldn’t discuss, even privately, Keith Hartrum said.

Decareaux and his wife, Sarah, were married about 14 years ago after a chance meeting that was “love at first sight,” Hartrum told The Associated Press. They made the most of his overseas assignments, using them to explore Europe over the past decade, he said.

“They had a strong, good, healthy marriage,” he said, noting the Decareaux was an experienced hiker “who just got caught up (last weekend) in a freak situation” that proved fatal.

“Dave was a great guy, a good father, son-in-law and husband,” Hartrum said. “Those two boys were just precious — smart, very nice kids.”

Laura Evelyn’s tweet about the landlord’s amazing demands.

NO loud music, or parties, or drugs and no stealing.

These are pretty reasonable requests for a landlord in a share flat to make when interviewing prospective tenants.

But no pork?

And no visitors?

And any personal items left in communal areas will be thrown away?

My, that’s just plain inhospitable.

Got a landlord horror story? Please share it with us below. Remember: No names

Tenants expect  rules, but Laura Evelyn  didn’t expect to be handed a list of increasingly bizarre house rules, before even signing a contract.

The 31 instructions include limiting showering to 15 minutes, having visitors approved two weeks in advance and never using somebody else’s shampoo.

Any personal belongings left in communal areas of the flat in Wood Green, north London, would be “thrown out as junk'” the list says, and no food is to be eaten in bedrooms.

Laura was so amazed by the list, she did the only sensible thing: she posted the entire thing on the internet.

Her tweet has since gone viral.

You can see the demands below.

A Massachusetts man and his nephew are recovering after being attacked by a bobcat in the man’s suburban garage.

Roger Mundell Jr., 53, and his 15-year-old nephew, Michael Granger, will find out later today if they contracted rabies after both were mauled by a bobcat Sunday morning. Mundell and Granger told ABC News they have already started treatment for the disease as a precaution.

Mundell, Granger and a friend were working on a project Sunday morning when Mundell entered his garage in rural Brookfield, Mass., to fetch some some straps. Rounding a car, he heard a hissing sound and Mundell says that without warning, the bobcat pounced on his head, sinking its teeth into his face and clawing his back.

“It got me just like his and gave me a bear hug right here,” Mundell said while pointing to his scared face.

Mundell was wearing a thick coat and managed to throw the bobcat off his body, sprinting out of the garage and slamming a door behind him. But the bobcat escaped through another door, where it caught sight of Granger.

“All of a sudden he’s just looking at me. Just giving me the death stare and you can tell he’s meaning business,” Granger said.

The bobcat bit Granger on the arms and back before Mundell pulled it off his nephew and wrestled it to the ground, holding it down with his arms and shin.
“I was screaming. I’m still hoarse,” Mundell’s wife, Cindy said.

“It was squirming around so much I was afraid that if it ever got loose it would still attack us,” Mundell said. “Cindy ran in the house and grabbed the handgun which we keep close.”

Mundell, bleeding from his neck and arms, shot the animal twice killing it.

“These two puncture from his fangs are really deep I guess,” Mundell said while showing off the bite marks on his neck.

Mundell’s wife is also being treated for rabies because the bobcat’s blood got on her skin.

Bobcats are elusive and are very rarely seen in the wild because they typically avoid human contact, experts say.

“Human bobcat interactions are extremely, extremely rare and attacks on humans are even more rare,” said Laura Conlee of the state’s Division of Fisheries and Wildlife. “Unprovoked, aggressive behaviors are a symptom of rabies and sometimes we see that with animals that do have rabies.”

Bobcats are approximately twice the size of a domestic house cat and adult bobcats can weigh between 15-35 pounds, according to the Division of Fisheries and Wildlife’s website.

Conlee says that if you spot a bobcat, enjoy the rare sighting from a distance, but if it exhibits strange behavior, report it to the authorities.

Claims: Awindra Pandey, the male friend with Miss Singh Pandey when she was subjected to the brutal gang-rape ordeal, spoke out in an interview on Indian television

04:35 EST            6 January 2013

The father of the 23-year-old victim of a horrific gang rape in India has given permission for her name to be revealed for the first time today.

Badri Singh Pandey said he wants ‘the world to know’ the name of his daughter Jyoti, who died in a Singapore hospital 13 days after the brutal rape in New Delhi.

‘Revealing her name will give courage to other women who have survived these attacks,’ said Mr Singh Pandey. ‘They will find strength from my daughter.’

The brutal attack has caused uproar in India, with mass demonstrations for women’s rights and calls for the six suspects in the case to be hanged.

The distraught father made his comments in an interview with the Sunday People, given from his ancestral village of Billia in Uttar Pradesh, a state in the north of India, where the family has gone to grieve.

He said he had no desire to see the faces of the men accused of the barbaric sexual attack on his child, he wants just to see them punished and hanged.

‘Death to all six of them,’ he said. ‘These men are beasts.

‘They should be made an example of and that society will not allow such things to happen.’

Poignant: White lilies could be seen in the back of the ambulance as the body was taken in a ambulance as it arrives from Singapore hospital in New Delhi

Miss Singh Pandey died died on December 29 in a specialist hospital in Singapore after a 13-day struggle to survive injuries so grievous that her intestines had to be removed.

She underwent three major surgeries – including one to remove her intestines – and suffered a cardiac arrest in India before being flown to Singapore for treatment.

Mr Singh Pandey told how his daughter, despite her ordeal, wanted to go on living. As she drifted in and out of consciousness in her hospital bed, she was able to communicate with her family through written notes.

‘She had a feeding pipe in her mouth making it difficult for her to speak,’ he said. ‘But she did write on some paper that she wanted to live, she wanted to survive and stay with us.

‘But it was fate that had the last say in the end.’

Miss Singh Pandey was raped after she and a male friend, named today as Awindra Pandey, 28, were lured onto a bus as they travelled home from the cinema, where they had been to see blockbuster Life Of Pi.

In an interview with Hindi TV channel Zee News, Awindra Pandey said the gang of six men aboard the bus – fitted with curtains and tinted windows – had planned to trap them.

Once on the bus, he was attacked and Miss Singh Pandey was gang-raped by a group of allegedly drunk men, including the driver, who also violated her with an iron bar causing immense internal damage that lead to her death, he said.

The man, believed to be the only witness in the case, said he did his best to fight off the attackers.

‘They beat us up, hit us with iron rod, snatched our clothes and belongings and they threw us off the bus on a deserted stretch.

‘From where we boarded bus, they moved around for nearly two and a half hours. We were shouting, trying to make people hear us,’ said the 28-year-old, who suffered a broken leg in the attack.

‘But they switched off the lights. We tried to resist them. Even my friend fought with them, she tried to save me. She tried to dial police control room number 100, but the men snatched the mobile.’

The horrifying crime has appalled India and brought simmering anger about widespread crime against women to the boil amid angry calls for safer streets, more sensitive policing and changed social attitudes.

Five men and a 17-year-old boy have been formally charged over the rape and murder of the medical student after DNA tests linked them to the crime.

The men will appear in the District Court of the Saket area of New Delhi tomorrow, while the 17-year-old will be tried separately as a juvenile.

Four people, including the gunman, were dead following a hostage-taking incident on Saturday in Aurora, Colorado, the same town where a man shot dead 12 people and wounded 58 more in a movie theater last July, police told reporters.

After nearly six hours of failed negotiations, police killed the gunman as he opened fire on them through a second-story window of a townhouse where he had barricaded himself, said Aurora police spokeswoman Cassidee Carlson.

It was unclear from police and media reports whether officers entered the home or shot the man through the window. KUSA television reported that he was killed after police fired tear gas and entered the home, where they found three more bodies.

The victims were believed to be related to the gunman, Carlson said.

Around 3 a.m. (1000 GMT), police notified neighbors of an emergency situation and evacuated several blocks, Carlson said in a news briefing outside the row of beige townhouses in this middle-class Aurora neighborhood, just outside Denver.

One person inside had escaped and alerted authorities, she said.

Around 8 a.m., the gunman fired on a police vehicle, leading to an exchange of gunfire, KMGH television said. At that time police saw the first body, the station reported.

Carlson said the gunman, whose name has not been released [but who might be Sonny Archuleta], died just before 9 a.m.

A neighbor, Michael Ignace, 46, said he had spoken to the gunman and “he seemed like a reasonable guy, and we talked about motorcycles.”

Police entered Ignace’s apartment during the night and alerted him, but he chose to stay in his house, he said.

The same Denver suburb was rocked by the mass shooting in July that had been the deadliest in the United States of 2012 until the December 14 massacre at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, where 28 died, including the shooter.

In Aurora, the gunman opened fire during a midnight screening of the Batman movie “The Dark Knight Rises.” Police identified former neuroscience graduate student James Holmes as the suspect in a crime that renewed debate about the sale of powerful semi-automatic rifles and extended capacity magazines.

A teenage girl’s dream to pay homage to her idol Marilyn Monroe with a tattoo of her has ended in a nightmare – after the finished artwork looked like a ‘blow up sex doll’.

Siobhan Fields, 16, paid £50 for the image of Marilyn to be inked on her left arm but said the end result was simply a ‘monstrosity’.

The heartbroken hairdresser said tattooist Dave Stewart – who does not have a council licence to operate – originally agreed to refund her money but then blocked her on Facebook.

Some like it botched: Siobhan Fields, 16, is appalled with the result of her Marilyn Monroe ‘artwork’ she received from Daves Intenze Tattoos

The teenager says it's going to cost an estimated £300 to cover up the artworkThe teenager says it’s going to cost an estimated £300 to cover up the tattoo

She has now reported him to police and today warned other potential victims to steer clear of the tattoo artist.

Siobhan, of Burnbank, Hamilton, Scotland, said: ‘It’s horrible. It’s so embarrassing. I’ve had to go out and buy loads of long-sleeved shirts because I don’t want anyone to see it.

‘I love Marilyn Monroe. She was absolutely beautiful – but this tattoo makes her look more like a blow-up doll.

‘Her mouth is just a black blob, the eyes are circles, her eyes are two dots.

‘She has black hair, the eyebrows are all wrong and there are wobbly lines everywhere.’

Siobhan’s ordeal began after she found Dave’s ‘Intenze Tattoos’ on Facebook and – impressed by the artwork on display – booked a session.

She said: ‘Alarm bells should have started ringing when he said he would do it round at my house.

‘I showed him to the picture of Marilyn and he seemed very confident that he could match it.

‘I booked an appointment and during the session I didn’t look at my arm because I’m not good with pain so I was just closing my eyes and gritted my teeth.

‘When it was finished, after about 90 minutes, I looked in the mirror and just felt total shock. But he was quite an intimidating guy, with tattoos all over his face so I didn’t want to confront him at the time.

‘Then I felt that I had just paid £50 for this guy to basically disfigure me for life.

‘Later on I contacted him and asked if he could refund my money and at first he agreed but then he blocked me on Facebook and cut off all contact.

‘It’s just one sorry looking mess and now I have to live with it.

Distraught Siobhan says tattoo artist Dave Stewart originally agreed to refund her money but then blocked her on Facebook

‘It’s going to cost around £300 to have it covered up by a proper tattoo artist.’

Mr Stewart was unreachable for comment today. The Facebook page for Dave’s Intenze Tattoos has been taken down.

A spokesman for South Lanarkshire Council said: ‘Intenze Tattoos does not hold a licence within the South Lanarkshire Council area.

‘The Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982 (Licensing of Skin Piercing and Tattooing) Order 2006 gives Local Authorities the power to license individuals who carry out skin piercing or tattooing activities as a business.

‘The Order lays out a number of requirements aimed at reducing, if not removing, risks to public health from these practices.

‘As well as setting out criteria that operators must adhere to, the Act also prohibits the tattooing of people under the age of 18 years and restricts the activity of skin piercing on people under the age of 16 years unless accompanied by a person with parental rights.

‘A person carrying out the activity of skin piercing or tattooing without a licence shall be guilty of an offence and liable, on summary conviction, to a fine.’

A Strathclyde Police spokesman said: ‘We would urge anyone considering body art, including tattooing, to thoroughly check the artist’s credentials.

‘Artists operate under a local authority-granted licence which should be displayed.’

Other celebrities to have Marilyn Monroe tattoos inked on them include I’m A Celebrity… contestant Helen Flanagan and Megan Fox – but the star has undergone surgery to remove the ‘negative character’ from her arm.

A 31-year-old woman was being held by the police on Saturday, authorities said, in connection with the death of a man who was pushed onto the tracks of a Queens subway station and crushed by an oncoming train.

The woman, Erica Menendez of the Bronx, will be charged with second-degree murder as a hate crime, according to a person in the Queens district attorney’s office. When Ms. Menendez was taken into custody by police early Saturday morning, she made comments implicating herself in the crime when questioned by detectives, according to Paul J. Browne, the chief spokesman for the Police Department.

A law enforcement official said that Ms. Menendez had “told the cops it was an act against Muslims,” and cited the Sept. 11 attacks. The victim, Sunando Sen, was born in India and, according to a roommate, was raised Hindu.

Law enforcement officials would not comment on Ms. Menesdez’s mental health.

The attack occurred around 8 p.m. on Thursday at the 40th Street-Lowery Street station in Sunnyside.

Mr. Sen was peering out over the tracks when a woman approached him from behind and shoved him onto the tracks, the police said. Mr. Sen never saw her, the police said, and had no time to react.

The woman fled the station, running down two flights of stairs and down the street.

By the next morning, a grainy black-and-white video of the woman who the police said was behind the attack was being broadcast on news programs.

It was not a lot to go on. The video was blurry and only a few seconds long.

Patrol officers picked up Ms. Menendez early Saturday after someone who had seen the video on television spotted her on a Brooklyn street and called 911, Mr. Browne said. She was taken to Queens and later placed in lineups, according to detectives.

Detectives had canvassed the area around the crime scene as well as homeless shelters and hospitals with psychiatric treatment facilities. On Saturday, however, Mr. Browne said the woman was not homeless.

Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly said Friday that according to witnesses’ accounts, there had been no contact on the subway platform between the attacker and the victim immediately before the fatal shove.

The case was the second this month involving someone being pushed to death in a train station. In the first case, Ki-Suck Han, 58, of Elmhurst, Queens, died under the Q train at the 49th Street and Seventh Avenue station on Dec. 3. Naeem Davis, 30, has been charged with second-degree murder in that case. A lawyer for Mr. Davis said his client had been trying to push Mr. Han away after an altercation.

The police said Mr. Sen was a 46-year-old immigrant who lived in Queens and had been raised in India. After years of toil, he had finally saved enough money to open a small copying business this year on the Upper West Side.

Ar Suman, one of four roommates who shared a small first-floor apartment with Mr. Sen in Elmhurst, said he was driving a client upstate when another roommate called and told him what had happened. Mr. Suman raced back to the city, only to find there was nothing he could do.

“He was a very educated person and quite nice,” Mr. Suman said. “It is unbelievable. He never had a problem with anyone.”

Mr. Sen’s roommates could not understand what might have led to the fatal encounter on Thursday. “This guy is so quiet, so gentle, so nice,” said M. D. Khan, a taxi driver who also lives in the apartment.

Vermont State Police say a man faces a drunken driving charge after driving onto the lawn of a historic home once owned by the co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous.

Police say 55-year-old Donald Blood III of Marlborough, Mass., was ordered to appear in court in Bennington on Jan. 14.

Police say Blood thought he was driving into a parking lot, but actually it was the lawn of the Wilson House, built in 1852 in Dorset, the birthplace of AA co-founder Bill Wilson.

The Wilson House’s website describes it as a “place of sanctuary where people can come to give thanks to God for their new lives.”

It still hosts several AA meetings each week.

A man who worked for the New Jersey Department of Corrections grabbed an officer’s gun and opened fire inside the Gloucester Township Police station early Friday, injuring three officers before being shot dead.

The officers involved in the incident were Sgt. James Garber, a 13-year veteran; Sgt. Kevin Thyne, an eight-year veteran; and Officer Ruth Burns, a one-year veteran.

“Their actions of protecting the community quickly escalated from responding to call for service to performances of heroic actions by members of this police department,” Chief W. Harry Earl said at an afternoon press conference.

It all started as a domestic violence call just after 1 a.m. when township police responded to a residential home for a report of a suspicious person. Investigating officers pulled over a man matching the description of the suspect.

Eddie Jones II., 39, of Willingboro, N.J. was arrested on suspicion of stalking his ex-girlfriend and other charges. He identified himself as an employee of the state Corrections Department, where he worked as a non-sworn in officer, Earl said.

The shooting followed inside the police station around 5:30 a.m. on the 1200 block of Chews Landing Road.

“A violent struggle occurred while the suspect was being processed,” Deputy Chief David Harkins said.

Police say Jones’ handcuffs were removed for a brief time so he could be processed. At that point he suddenly overpowered Officer Burns, knocking her to the ground, hitting her in the head and taking her weapon from its holster, Earl said.

The two sergeants heard the commotion and came running into the processing room, Earl said.

“Eddie Jones continued rapid fire at the officers while Sgt. Garber and Sgt. Thyne returned fire,” Earl said.

Burns was shot in the foot. Thyne was hit on his duty belt causing a laceration to his stomach and suffered a graze wound to his chin. And, Garber was shot in his bulletproof vest, in the abdomen and suffered a graze wound to his head.

Jones died at the scene after being shot multiple times.

Police say that Burns and Thyne were treated a released. Garber underwent surgery for his stomach wound at Cooper University Hospital where he remained in stable condition Friday afternoon.

A spokesperson for the hospital says that there were several puncture wounds in the officer’s vest.

“I’m so proud of the actions these officers because they placed themselves in harm’s way to save the lives of their fellow officers, police dispatchers and the general public during this escape attempt,” Earl said.

The N.J. Department of Corrections said that Jones worked as a civil communications officer at the Garden State Youth Correctional Facility in Chesterfieldd, Burlington County. He had worked at the DOC since September 1997.

A New York City woman has been arrested by federal authorities who say she tried to scam donors by posing as a relative of one of the children killed at a Connecticut elementary school.

Thirty-seven-year-old Nouel Alba was arrested Thursday and charged with lying to FBI agents.

Federal prosecutors say she used her Facebook account, telephone calls and text messages to seek donations for what she called a “funeral fund.”

Authorities say Alba denied seeking the donations when she was contacted by FBI agents investigating charity scams related to the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. A gunman killed 20 children and six adults there on Dec. 14.

Alba, of the Bronx, appeared Thursday in federal court in Hartford and was released on $50,000 bond. A number listed for her was not in service.

Clemson University student Nathan Weaver set out to determine how to help turtles cross the road. He ended up getting a glimpse into the dark souls of some humans.

Weaver put a realistic rubber turtle in the middle of a lane on a busy road near campus. Then he got out of the way and watched over the next hour as seven drivers swerved and deliberately ran over the animal. Several more apparently tried to hit it but missed.

“I’ve heard of people and from friends who knew people that ran over turtles. But to see it out here like this was a bit shocking,” said Weaver, a 22-year-old senior in Clemson’s School of Agricultural, Forest and Environmental Sciences.

To seasoned researchers, the practice wasn’t surprising.

The number of box turtles is in slow decline, and one big reason is that many wind up as roadkill while crossing the asphalt, a slow-and-steady trip that can take several minutes.

Sometimes humans feel a need to prove they are the dominant species on this planet by taking a two-ton metal vehicle and squishing a defenseless creature under the tires, said Hal Herzog, a Western Carolina University psychology professor.

“They aren’t thinking, really. It is not something people think about. It just seems fun at the time,” Herzog said. “It is the dark side of human nature.”

Herzog asked a class of about 110 students getting ready to take a final whether they had intentionally run over a turtle, or been in a car with someone who did. Thirty-four students raised their hands, about two-thirds of them male, said Herzog, author of a book about humans’ relationships with animals, called “Some We Love, Some We Hate, Some We Eat.”

Weaver, who became interested in animals and conservation through the Boy Scouts and TV’s “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin, wants to figure out the best way to get turtles safely across the road and keep the population from dwindling further.

Among the possible solutions: turtle underpasses or an education campaign aimed at teenagers on why drivers shouldn’t mow turtles down.

The first time Weaver went out to collect data on turtles, he chose a spot down the road from a big apartment complex that caters to students. He counted 267 vehicles that passed by, seven of them intentionally hitting his rubber reptile.

He went back out about a week later, choosing a road in a more residential area. He followed the same procedure, putting the fake turtle in the middle of the lane, facing the far side of the road, as if it was early in its journey across. The second of the 50 cars to pass by that day swerved over the center line, its right tires pulverizing the plastic shell.

“Wow! That didn’t take long,” Weaver said.

Other cars during the hour missed the turtle. But right after his observation period was up, before Weaver could retrieve the model, another car moved to the right to hit the animal as he stood less than 20 feet away.

“One hit in 50 cars is pretty significant when you consider it might take a turtle 10 minutes to cross the road,” Weaver said.

Running over turtles even has a place in Southern lore.

In South Carolina author Pat Conroy’s semi-autobiographical novel “The Great Santini,” a fighter-pilot father squishes turtles during a late-night drive when he thinks his wife and kids are asleep. His wife confronts him, saying: “It takes a mighty brave man to run over turtles.”

A policeman who was injured during violent protests over the gang rape of a woman in the Indian capital Delhi has died in hospital.

Subhash Tomar, 47, was injured in clashes at the weekend in which more than 100 people, including at least 60 officers, were injured.

The rape, which happened on a bus, has left the woman in a critical condition and caused outrage in India.

Indian PM Manmohan Singh has appealed for calm in the city.

Mr Singh said his government would “make all possible efforts to ensure security and safety to all women”.

The victim continues to be on life support and in a critical condition in a city hospital, doctors say.

Six people, including the bus driver, have already been arrested in connection with the incident.

Mr Tomar, a constable with the city police, was injured during the protests at India Gate in the heart of the capital on Sunday.

Violence erupted as demonstrators tried to break through police barricades to march on President Pranab Mukherjee’s palace.

Mr Tomar suffered a heart attack and had been on life support in hospital early on Tuesday.

“The protesters pelted stones at Mr Tomar, he was unconscious for two days and today he died,” police spokesman Rajan Bhagat told AFP news agency.

Police had arrested eight people, including an activist of a newly formed anti-corruption political party, in connection with “the injuries caused to Mr Tomar”.

A relative of Mr Tomar said he was attacked by a mob.

“My cousin was always out on streets maintaining law and order. The mob attacked him for no reason. They just killed him,” said Ajay Tomar.

The authorities have kept roads and metro stations shut since Monday to stop protesters, leading to massive traffic jams.

The government has tried to halt the rising anger by announcing a series of measures intended to make Delhi safer for women.

These include more police night patrols, checks on bus drivers and their assistants, and the banning of buses with tinted windows or curtains.

Two policemen have also been suspended in connection with the incident, which happened on 16 December.

But the protesters say the government’s pledge to seek life sentences for the attackers is not enough – many are calling for the death penalty.

The 23-year-old victim and her friend had been to watch a film when they boarded the bus in the Munirka area intending to travel to Dwarka in south-west Delhi.

Police said she was raped for nearly an hour, both she and her companion were beaten with iron bars and thrown out of the moving bus into a Delhi street.

UK doctors have saved a man’s life using an unconventional treatment – a shot of neat alcohol into the arteries supplying his heart.

Ronald Aldom, 77, from Portishead near Bristol, had an unusual heart rhythm called ventricular tachychardia that can be fatal if left unchecked.

Medics had tried to treat it using standard methods but with no success.

They resorted to using pure ethanol to trigger a controlled heart attack and kill off some of his heart muscle.

Ethanol ablation

The procedure involved passing a catheter into a blood vessel in the groin and guiding it up towards the heart.

Once the catheter identifies which part of the heart the dangerous rhythms are coming from, the ethanol dose can be delivered.

This kills the area of the heart muscle causing the problem allowing the heart’s rhythm to return to normal.

This rare treatment has only been conducted a handful of times in the UK.

Cardiologist Dr Tom Johnson, who carried out the procedure at the Bristol Heart Institute, said Mr Aldom was now “much better”.

“He wasn’t going to leave hospital unless something was done. There was no other option.”

Mr Aldom, who is now out of hospital, said: “I think it’s wonderful that the doctors tried everything to help me.

“If they hadn’t have done this I wouldn’t be here now.”

December 22, 2012          5:34 p.m.

A Bellagio black jack dealer suffered deep cuts to her face after a colleague stabbed her while the two were inside one of the pits at the casino Friday night, officials said Saturday.

It was the second violent incident in a little over a week inside a high-profile casino on the Strip, the other one a murder-suicide at the Excalibur last weekend.

Marcus Martin, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Police Department, said the female victim, whose identity had not been released, was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, where she was being treated for her wounds. He condition wasn’t immediately known.

Brenda J. Stokes, 50, was arrested in connection with the stabbing, and was being held at the Clark County Detention Center on a variety of charges, including burglary, battery with a deadly weapon, battery with use of a deadly weapon-substantial bodily harm, and mayhem.

Witnesses inside the casino reported the fight at 9:47 p.m., Martin said. He said “an edged blade” was confiscated, although he did not know whether it was an actual knife, a pair of box-cutters or a small blade of some sort.

Within minutes of the altercation, the Clark County Fire Department was on scene dressing the wounds of the victim, and Stokes was taken into custody, Martin said.

The black jack pits were back up and running after the scene was “secured and restored,” said Yvette Monet, a spokeswoman for MGM Resorts International, the owner of the Bellagio.

“I gotta say, if you look at the people we serve, the tourists and the locals, events like these do happen on the streets in Las Vegas. But this latest sort of stuff? Inside casinos? Just off the Strip? This is rare,” Martin said.

On Dec. 14, Edward Brandt, 30, of Lake Forest, Ill. fatally shot Jessica Kenny, of Grayslake, Ill., inside the lobby of the Excalibur at 8:30 p.m., where Kenny was working as a concierge.

Brandt then killed himself in what was described by Las Vegas police as a relatively crowded lobby. Investigators believe that Brandt at some point had a relationship with Kenny.

In Friday night’s stabbing, said they didn’t not know why Stokes went after the victim with a blade, cutting her in the face. But the fight is under investigation.

Martin did not know which woman was working and which one wasn’t, or whether they both were working at the time of the fight.

Monet said the altercation occurred inside Black Jack Pit No. 2, which is in the rear of the casino. She said security had the place under control and restored within minutes of the altercation.

11:39 IST              (18/12/2012)

The bus driver, who along with six others, allegedly gang raped a 23-year-old girl on Sunday night, was on Tuesday remanded to five days in police custody by a Delhi court. Ram Singh, who was the first person to be arrested on Monday night, was produced before Metropolitan

Magistrate Namrita Aggarwal who allowed the plea of Delhi Police for his custodial interrogation for facilitating the arrest of three other accused who are absconding.

The accused refused to undergo Test Identification Parade (TIP), the criminal procedure in which the alleged offender is brought before witnesses and victims for identification.

Out of the seven accused, four have already been arrested.

The Delhi Police told the magistrate that the other three arrested culprits, Ram Singh’s brother Mukesh, Vinay Sharma, an assistant gym instructor and Pawan Gupta, a fruit seller, will be produced in court on Wednesday.

While seeking the remand of the driver, the police said his custodial interrogation was needed to recover the clothes of accused, mobile phones and ATM cards of the victim and her male friend.

Further, “we need his remand as three more accused are to be arrested who hail from Rajasthan, UP and Bihar and we have to take Ram Singh to these places,” police said.

Allowing the plea, the court said, “Since the accused is required for apprehending other co-accused and also for the identification of clothes and recovery of the ATM card and mobile phones of the complainant.

“Accused Ram Singh is remanded to five days of police custody. Accused be produced on December 23.”

Two days after a paramedical student was gang-raped and brutally assaulted in a moving bus, Delhi Police on Tuesday claimed to have solved the case with the arrest of four people and said it will seek a fast-track trial for speedy punishment.

The condition of the victim continued to be critical but “better than yesterday’s”, doctors said.

Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar told a press conference that the driver of the chartered bus, which was not legally permitted to run on normal routes, his brother and two more people have been arrested, while a massive manhunt has been launched to nab the remaining two accused.

Ram Singh, the driver of the bus, his brother Mukesh, Vinay Sharma, an assistant gym instructor and Pawan Gupta, a fruit seller, were on a “joy ride” on Sunday night when they crossed Munirka bus stop where the paramedic student and her male friend were waiting for a bus to Dwarka.

“Ram Singh shouted that the bus was going to Dwarka and asked the couple to get into it. Once the bus started moving, they started misbehaving with the girl. Her male friend who, protested and tried to save the girl, was severely beaten up. The girl also tried hard to protect him,” Kumar said.

But she was raped by Singh and other occupants of the vehicle which was being driven by Mukesh at the time of the incident. The duo were then brutally assaulted and dumped near Mahipalpur flyover, he said.

While Singh, Sharma and Gupta were arrested from the capital, Mukhesh was nabbed from Rajasthan and has been brought to the capital, the Commissioner said, while terming the incident as “most reprehensible”.

The bus was located in Sector 3 of R K Puram last evening and was impounded immediately. “The driver cleaned the bus but forensic examination revealed this was the bus in which the incident took place. The duo were dumped from the front gate of the bus,” the Police Commissioner said.

Asked why the bus was not stopped by PCR vans, he said it was not practically possible to check every moving vehicle though it can be done theoretically.

To a question, Kumar said while the boy was hit by an iron rod, the girl was punched badly in her stomach.

Asked whether Delhi was becoming the ‘rape capital’, he said it was not so and refused to discuss rape incidents as a whole.

“Let us discuss this incident. If we discuss it as a whole then I will say something which will be politically incorrect. You will twist and project it differently,” he said.

To a question, he said the mobile phones of the victims were not used during the incident.

Sources said police managed to get the CCTV footage of the bus from which they managed to zero in on the bus. The investigators also sent text messages to mobile phones of the victims which were snatched by the attackers to track them down.

Kumar said Delhi Police will seek a fast-track trial for this case on a day-to-day basis so that the accused are punished as soon as possible.

To a question, he said the maximum punishment for this crime was life sentence, but as far as the demands for death sentence for such crimes are concerned the Delhi Police will send a proposal in this regard to Government.

The incident triggered outrage with students of Jawaharlal Nehru University staging a demonstration outside Vasant Kunj Police Station.

The 23-year-old para-medical student was raped and brutally assaulted by four men who also attacked her male friend and threw both of them out of the vehicle.

Last night, Ram Singh, the driver of the bus in which the girl was raped, and his brother Yogesh were arrested. Singh and Yogesh are the first to be arrested, police said and added that Yogesh was driving the bus when Singh allegedly raped the girl along with others.

The woman who was gang-raped and thrown off a moving bus in the capital is still critical and continues to be on ventilator support but can talk now, authorities at the Safdarjung Hospital said on Tuesday.

“The patient is still critical, she is on ventilator support. But since today (Tuesday) morning she has started to speak to the doctor,” S.N. Makwana, press information officer at the hospital said.

A senior doctor at the hospital, who is attending to the victim, added that no further surgeries were being planned as of now.

“The patient is in critical condition and she is now trying to speak. As of now we are not planning for any surgery. We can say it is a grievous injury and her intestines are severely damaged,” another doctor said on condition of anonymity.

The incident rocked both Houses of Parliament on Tuesday where Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha witnessed uproar by the Opposition. Leader across all political parties condemned the heinous crime.

Speaking in Lok Sabha, leader of opposition and senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj sought death penalty for perpetrators of rape. Speaker Meira Kumar too condemned the brutal incident.

In the Rajya Sabha, Bahujan Samajwadi Party chief Mayawati demanded tough action against the rapists.

The BJP demanded suspension of zero hour, and Rajya Sabha was adjourned for fifteen minutes following uproar over the incident.

Ram Singh, driver of the bus was arrested on Monday night, 3-4 people have been detained and are being questioned by the police.

Another accused has reportedly been arrested.

The girl has severe genital, abdominal and head injuries.

“We performed several life-saving procedures on her within an hour of her being brought to the hospital around 3am. Her injuries were severe and she has lost a lot of blood,” said a senior doctor at the hospital.

The victim had reportedly lost nearly a litre of blood and had severe internal injuries.

CCTV footage of the bus in which a 23-year old physiotherapist was gangraped.

“Her intestines are damaged; the blood supply to her intestines has been severed. It looks like she was assaulted by a blunt object as her face also bore injury marks,” said the doctor.

The life-saving surgery lasted for more than four hours in the morning. Doctors tried to repair her intestines and other damaged organs and tissues.

“Her injuries are fatal. Though we are pumping her with the strongest of antibiotics possible, sooner or later gangrene is bound to set in. She is in a very bad shape,” the doctor added.

The medical staff present at the hospital, when she was brought in, described her condition as “horrifying”.

“She was in a pool of blood but conscious. There was blood all over her face. I cannot even imagine the agonising pain she must be in,” said a nursing assistant in the hospital who wished to remain anonymous.

Sources in the hospital told Hindustan Times that it seemed at least four people were involved in the crime, as different semen samples were found on her.

The victim, a physiotherapist from Uttam Nagar and her friend, a 28-year-old software engineer, had gone to the Select Citywalk mall in Saket to catch a movie.

By the time the show was over, it was past 8pm and the couple took an autorickshaw to the DDA Munirka bus stop on Outer Ring Road.

After waiting for more than half an hour, the two decided to board a luxury bus en route Dwarka and Palam Village. No sooner than they boarded the bus that one of the seven occupants made a lewd comment.

When her freind objected to their remark, he was beaten up by iron rod.

The victim, in the meantime, was forced into the driver’s cabin, where the men took turns to rape her. The bus, meanwhile, circled the Mahipalpur flyover thrice before dumping them.

Later, the girl and the boy were thrown out at a toll plaza on NH8 near the Mahipalpur flyover.

A highway patrol team discovered the unconscious couple bereft of clothing at 10.15pm. They were eventually taken to Safdarjung Hospital by police.

The male friend was discharged after treatment for his injuries on Monday.

The law enforcement official says the boys’ mother, Nancy Lanza, worked at the school as a teacher and is presumed dead.

The official also said Ryan Lanza’s girlfriend and another friend are missing in New Jersey.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official said the suspect is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the source was not authorized to speak on the record about the developing criminal investigation.

WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 12, 2012           7:30 PM

There are “Bad Barbies” in the Bronx, but they aren’t playing around.

The Feds busted 40 accused Bronx Trinitarios gang members — including the leader of the all-female “Bad Barbies” faction — charging them with a whopping nine murders and 24 attempted murders.

Maria Mejia, 24, was charged in connection with the gunning down of a rival gang member in 2005. The chubby 5-foot-3 defendant wore red knee-high boots and black nail polish to her arraignment Wednesday.

She pleaded not guilty and was ordered held without bail.

“We weren’t surprised to learn that the Trinitarios were up to no good in the Bronx,” NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly said Wednesday. “But the Bad Barbies? Who knew? Maybe it’s a sign of the times that gender is no bar when it comes to murder, robbery and other crimes.”

Meanwhile, Brooklyn authorities smashed up a Bushwick gang Wednesday, collaring 41 alleged members on charges that include murder and attempted murder.

The True Bosses Only crew collected dues from members during weekly meetings that were used to pay bail and buy weapons and buy credit at the Rikers commissary, authorities said.

The Brooklyn bust came after a detective friended 24 of the alleged gangsters on Facebook, Kelly said. Some True Bosses Only members are as young as 12.

Authorities said 14 of the 40 accused Bronx Trinitarios were already in federal custody on previous charges, while 26 were new defendants. The feds have nabbed 119 alleged Manhattan and Bronx Trinitarios since 2009.

Mejia was the only woman charged Wednesday for her involvement in the Dec. 11, 2005 murder of 20-year-old Dominicans-Don’t-Play gang member Miguel Perez. But the alleged femme fatale is one of about 100 women who run with the Bronx Trinitarios, Kelly said.

“The violence among men and women alike is frequently directed at rival gangs including the Crips and Dominicans-Don’t-Play,” he said.

Meijia and other Trinitarios charged with murder could face the death penalty if convicted.

Outside court, her sister said Mejia is not a Bad Barbie.

“She’s taking care of my sick mother,” the sister said. “It’s not true she’s in a gang.”

The Trinitarios takedown was part of “Operation Patria,” a long-term effort by the Feds and local cops to break up the notorious gang, authorities said.

More than half of 50 accused Bronx gangsters charged in 2011 and all but three of 43 Manhattan goons nabbed in 2009 and 2010 have already copped pleas.

The effort is “paying off,” with Bronx shooting incidents and victims down 6% from last year and murders down 23%, Kelly said.

The new charges unsealed Wednesday include narcotics conspiracy and firearms offenses in addition to the murder counts.

“These charges remind us that the gangs of New York are alive and well, but we are dedicated to extinguishing them one by one,” said Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, calling the Trinitarios an “endangered species.”

December 14, 2012            12:00AM

WHILE on bail and a court curfew, a major drug trafficker used his light plane and a Ferrari to shuttle between Melbourne and a clandestine lab in regional Victoria to oversee production for his ice and amphetamine network, a court heard yesterday.

Mohammed Charif Oueida, aka Sherif Lobau, whose $2.8 million fortress-like Greenvale home came complete with a golf course, was shot on the day he was due before court last year as part of a battle involving Middle Eastern crime families in Melbourne’s west over the control of drug money, the County Court heard.

Lebanese-born Oueida, 36, was described in court as having an Alan Bond-type character – he lived a lavish life, drove a Hummer or Ferrari 360 Spyder and flew his Beechcraft Bonanza light aircraft.

But at other times, Oueida was a kidnap victim, he was shot at by a rival using a gold-plated Beretta pistol, or he talked up timber deals in the Solomon Islands or building projects in Pakistan.

“He’s a terrible show-off,” defence barrister Remy ven de Wiel, QC, said. “A multi-millionaire today and they are broke tomorrow.”

Oueida’s empire came undone thanks in large measure to the bravery of an undercover police operative, codenamed UCO232, from Taskforce Rossa, a joint operation between the Australian Federal Police, Victoria Police and the Australian Crime Commission, the court heard.

“He chose to play the game … what brought him undone was the brave effort of an undercover police officer who put his life at risk to infiltrate and deal with people who were prepared to use extreme violence,” prosecutor Richard Pirrie said.

On one occasion, as Oueida was on a lunch adjournment from a court hearing last year for a separate shoot-out at Coolaroo, he took an $80,000 cash payment from UCO232 for a drugs shipment.

“Oueida had plenty of money, he had a lifestyle beyond extravagant,” Mr Pirrie said.

“He was at the top of the tree on his side of the (drug network’s) equation.”

He gave one of his associates a Lexus car and another a Range Rover as he organised thousands of packets of “Chinese pseudo pills” – cold and flu tablets processed for their pseudoephedrine – and sold a wholesale value of $740,000 in illicit drugs in 2010, the court heard.

Mr Pirrie, in calling for a sentence of up to 11 years, said Oueida was a willing player who had used his sophisticated network to build a fortune.

“This is offending at a very high level,” he said.

Judge Liz Gaynor will sentence Oueida, who has pleaded guilty, next Thursday.

Dean Wills

December 10, 2012             12:00AM

IT’S not Monaco, the Nurburgring or even Oran Park – this racetrack is NSW’s best-kept secret.

The privately owned road in Kulnura, on the Central Coast, is a 5.1km Formula One-style track with 22 turns, described by one motorsport champion as the second-best track in the world.

The track, which is said to have cost $10 million, was built by car enthusiast and former Coca-Cola Amatil boss Dean Wills after he lost his licence for speeding on the old Pacific Highway in 1996.

Mr Wills wanted to enjoy his growing fleet of exotic cars – which included the only McLaren racing car ever sold privately – without having to worry about oncoming traffic.

His son Mark said the track was motivated by a lack of opportunity for “spirited” driving in a safe environment.

“In the early days it was possible to wake up early on Sunday morning and go driving,” he said.

“It was becoming increasingly less safe so we really needed somewhere we could go where we wouldn’t get into life-threatening situations.

“Safety was the most important thing, to be able to enjoy driving in the way manufacturers designed the cars to be driven without on-coming cars or cyclists.

“We don’t do lap times, the only way we measure it is how long the smile lasts.”

While from the air it looks every bit a hair-raising speedway, Mr Wills said it was deliberately built as a country road, without a race track’s ripple strips, barriers or gravel run-off areas.

KulnuraMclaren F1

The McLaren F1 believed to be owned by Dean Wills.

Guests have to adhere to strict road rules including “no racing” and it even features standard road signs with recommended corner speeds.

“It never really entered our minds to create a race track, we just wanted a country road to drive on.”

Mr Wills would not reveal how much the family had ploughed into the road but a conservative estimate of about $60sq m for the bitumen alone puts the 40,000sq m of circuit at $2.4 million.Getting to race on the track is akin to joining the mafia – someone has to vouch for you.

“It’s all friends of friends,” he said. “We know the people who are inviting (other people) here and we trust their judgment.”

Those who have done a few laps include motorcycle champion Casey Stoner, the “Flying Scot” Sir Jackie Stewart and Formula One great Jack Brabham.

Mr Wills said Wayne Gardner described the road as his second favourite circuit in the world behind Suzuka in Japan.
