Bizarre cold-weather phenomena called frost quakes — which generate shaking and ear-splitting sounds likened to exploding bombs — have blasted towns across the Northeast and upper Midwest during this extraordinarily frigid winter.

Thanks to social media reports, researchers have been able to study frost quake reports submitted from Minnesota, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri and Canada and talk to those who felt and heard the unsettling booms and shakes.

King lives on the top floor of a 15-story Toronto building and likened the sound to two bowling balls being knocked together.

“People here are used to hearing regular cracks and pops in the winter as the cold weather causes pipes and structures to expand and contract,” she said. “These frost quakes sound much louder and deeper.”

Another apparent frost quake awoke her around 5 a.m. the next day, she said.

“I went on Twitter (https://twitter.com/lovethinkplay) and found several tweets from people who were awoken by the same thing, at the same time, around the same area as my apartment building,” she said.

Frost quakes have a scientific name: cryoseism. The term also includes the cracking and slipping of glacial ice and the fracturing of frozen lake ice, said Clifford Thurber, a geophysics professor at the University of Wisconsin Madison.

He guesses that the frozen water tables are tens of meters long. The most intense frost quake he’s seen was a magnitude 1.5.

“Even though their source sizes are small, the shaking they cause at the surface can be large because they occur so close to the surface,” Thurber said in an email to the Los Angeles Times. “But typically they will not be felt very far away.”

And social media have given researchers a new way to study the little-discussed temblors.

“Since frost quakes are rare, localized, cannot be monitored and tend to cause only minimal damage, the scientific community has very limited amount of information,” said University of Toronto Scarborough Climate Laboratory researcher Andrew Leung.

They might crack roadways and building foundations, but that kind of result is rare.

Frost quakes can strike after a pounding of rain or when the rapid melting of snow saturates underground streams. When temperatures suddenly reach near 0 degrees, the water table expands and starts cracking the soil and smashing nearby rock formations. Witnesses have described the sounds as being similar to gunshots, exploding bombs and falling trees.

Since the beginning of the year, Leung has tracked numerous frost quakes in freeze-gripped parts of the Midwest.

While visiting Texas during Christmas, King heard news reports of “booms” in her hometown and turned to Twitter to see what people were saying. She assembled a Google Map to allow users to pinpoint and describe their own frost quake experience.

“It amazed me how gracious people were to have a Web page where they could see that other people were hearing and feeling the same strange events as them,” King said.

“Soon enough, it appeared to everyone that these noises were not random due to the sheer volume of reports,” Leung said.

King’s map shows frost quake markers in states such as Maine, New York, Ohio, and Wisconsin. As recently as Sunday, 911 operators in Illinois and Missouri took reports from callers who said they heard booms.

Leung suggested that in addition to social media reports, frost quakes have garnered extra attention becuase they have occurred in a major city, Toronto. It’s more typical to hear of booms once every few years in rural areas of states such as Wisconsin and Massachusetts.

Eleanor Catton was awarded the Man Booker Prize on Tuesday for “The Luminaries,” an immersive tale set in 19th-century New Zealand that explores identity, greed and human frailty.

At 28, Ms. Catton is the youngest winner of the Booker. She was born in Canada and raised in Christchurch, New Zealand.

The Booker is Britain’s most prestigious literary prize, awarded annually to a novelist from Britain, Ireland or a Commonwealth country. The winner receives £50,000, or about $80,000.

Looking stunned after being named the winner, Ms. Catton said that her lengthy, complex novel was “a publisher’s nightmare.”

She then thanked her publishers for striking the “elegant balance between making art and making money.”

The book was released by Granta in Britain and Little, Brown and Company in the United States. At 848 pages, it is the longest book to win the Booker Prize.

The other nominees were “We Need New Names,” by NoViolet Bulawayo, a debut novel about a 10-year-old girl who journeys from Zimbabwe to the United States; “Harvest,” by Jim Crace, a dark, vividly drawn novel about the inhabitants of a small village; “A Tale for the Time Being,” by Ruth Ozeki, about a discovered diary that links people in distant cities; “The Lowland,” by Jhumpa Lahiri, about brothers living in post-colonial India; and “The Testament of Mary,” by Colm Toibin, a slim, 81-page portrait of Mary, the mother of Jesus.

This year’s ceremony, broadcast live from Guildhall in London, was especially momentous because it was the last year before the award is opened to entries from the United States and beyond.

In September, the Booker Prize Foundation announced that in 2014 the prize would be open to all novels written in English and published in Britain, no matter the nationality of the author.

That decision prompted hand-wringing from many in the literary world in Britain, who worried that the reconceived Booker would be limited in its potential to discover and anoint new and unknown authors.

Jonathan Taylor, chairman of the foundation, wrote at the time: “Paradoxically it has not been allowed full participation to all those writing literary fiction in English. It is rather as if the Chinese were excluded from the Olympic Games.”

The winner is selected by the judging panel on the day of the ceremony.

Ms. Catton’s first novel, “The Rehearsal,” was widely praised and nominated for awards including the Orange Prize and the Dylan Thomas Prize. She studied at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and was 25 when she began writing “The Luminaries.”

Despite her age, “Maturity is evident in every sentence, in the rhythms and balances,” said Robert Macfarlane, chairman of the judges. “It is a novel of astonishing control.”

Writing in The Guardian, Kirsty Gunn called “The Luminaries” a “consummate literary page-turner.” “Catton has created her own world in ‘The Luminaries’ — an upside-down, Southern Hemisphere kind of a place with its own astrological calendar that casts its own kind of influence, its own light.”

The Booker bestows an author with an instant boost in sales and recognition.

Some of Britain’s most revered authors, including Peter Carey, Ian McEwan and Julian Barnes, have won the prize.

Last year, the prize was given to Hilary Mantel for “Bring Up the Bodies,” her second Booker victory. She previously won in 2009, for “Wolf Hall,” the first book in her planned trilogy about Thomas Cromwell.

KTVU Channel 2, a Fox affiliate in the San Francisco Bay Area, has issued an apology on Friday after an on-air blunder by an anchorwoman that involved fake names of Asiana flight 214 pilots.

During the noon newscast Friday, co-anchor Tori Campbell told viewers that “KTVU has just learned the names of the four pilots who were on board” the flight that crashed at San Francisco International Airport on Saturday.

She proceeded to read the names that may have originated as a joke online – “Sum Ting Wong,” “Wi Tu Lo,” “Ho Lee Fuk,” and “Bang Ding Ow”— as a TV graphic displayed the names next to a photo of the charred cabin.

“We made several mistakes when we received this information,” KTVU’s apology on its website read. “KTVU accepts full responsibility for this mistake.”

In seeking to verify the names with the National Transportation Safety Board, an unidentified KTVU reporter who made the call to the government agency’s public affairs office didn’t read the names out loud. KTVU didn’t clarify how the names were conveyed to the NTSB representative, who turned out to be a summer intern.

The KTVU reporter also failed to ask for the identify of the NTSB intern who confirmed the spellings of the names.

“We heard this person verify the information without questioning who they were and then rushed the names on our noon newscast,” KTVU’s note read.

The NTSB also issued its apology late Friday afternoon for “inaccurate and offensive names that were mistakenly confirmed as those of the pilots.”

“A summer intern acted outside the scope of his authority when he erroneously confirmed the names of the flight crew on the aircraft,” its statement said. “The NTSB does not release or confirm the names of crewmembers or people involved in transportation accidents to the media. We work hard to ensure that only appropriate factual information regarding an investigation is released and deeply regret today’s incident. Appropriate actions will be taken to ensure that such a serious error is not repeated.”

Saints Row 4

June 25, 2013         6:50PM

THE newest instalment of top-selling video game Saints Row has been banned in Australia, becoming the first title to be refused classification after the introduction of an R18+ rating for games in January this year.

Saints Row IV will be banned from sale in Australia under the ruling, announced by Classification Board acting director Donald McDonald late on Tuesday.

Mr McDonald said the Board had refused an adults-only rating to the game due to “interactive, visual depictions of implied sexual violence not justified by context” and “elements of illicit or proscribed drug use related to incentives or rewards”.

Mr McDonald said Saints Row IV was the first game banned from sale since the new video game classifications came into action six months ago, with other titles including Ninja Gaiden: Razor’s Edge and Mortal Kombat receiving an R18+ rating.

“Apart from today’s decision, since the beginning of the year, the board has classified 17 games R18+ under the new guidelines,” he said.

American-based publisher THQ can appeal the decision to the Classification Board, or censor elements of the game and reapply for a classification in Australia.

It has yet to respond to the board’s decision.

The last game in the series, Saints Row: The Third, received an MA15+ rating in Australia prior to the introduction of the R18+ rating, and no other title in the series has been banned.

Prior to the adults-only rating introduction, however, many big-name games were refused classification in Australia, including Fallout 3PostalLeft 4 Dead 2, and four Grand Theft Auto titles, which feature similar open-world, crime-based gameplay to Saints Row.

June 8, 2013            12:59 p.m.

The gunman accused of killing four people in a Santa Monica shooting rampage Friday was apparently angry over his parents’ divorce and had some mental health issues in the past, a law enforcement source told The Times.

The suspect was identified by five law enforcement sources in Washington and Los Angeles as John Zawahri, in his 20s.

Other sources with knowledge of the investigation said detectives believe the shooting was sparked by a family dispute of some kind but emphasized that the investigation was still in its early stages. The suspect’s past mental health issues occurred when he was juvenile, the law enforcement source said, but no further details were offered.

The sources all spoke on the condition of anonymity because the case was ongoing.

These sources said the alleged gunman’s first victims were his father and brother, whose bodies were found in a burning home.

One thing the investigators were trying to figure out is why the suspect wanted to be driven to Santa Monica College, where he was ultimately killed by police.

Police have stressed that the rampage was not a “school shooting” and that the violence occurred in many places and happened to end on the campus.

But a woman who was carjacked by the alleged gunman said he specifically asked to be taken to the college.

“You’re going to drive me to Santa Monica College and let me out,” Laura Sisk, 41, of Culver City recalled the suspect saying in an interview with The Times.

As of Saturday morning, law enforcement sources said they did not believe the college was the target.

Police were expected to hold a news conference at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The first signs of trouble came about 11:50 a.m. Friday, when gunshots rang out in the vicinity of Kansas and Yorkshire avenues, in a quiet neighborhood near the 10 Freeway.

Jerry Cunningham-Rathner had just watched her son walk out the front door of her home a few minutes earlier when she heard the shots. She rushed outside, fearing he had been hit.

Instead, looking across the street, she saw a house engulfed in flames. A man standing in front of the house was dressed all in black, with an ammunition belt around his waist and a large rifle in his hands, she said.

“He looked like a SWAT officer,” she said.

Firefighters later found the bodies of two men inside the house. Police sources said the men were Samir Zawahri, 55, the owner of the house and the father of the alleged gunman, and one of his adult sons.

Cunningham-Rathner looked on in horror as two cars approached. She said the man pointed his weapon at the first, a Mazda hatchback, and yelled at the driver to stop. Cunningham-Rathner said he motioned for the woman driving the second car to keep moving. When she hesitated, the man opened fire on her silver Infiniti, wounding the driver slightly.

Sisk, the driver in the first car, froze, she said. She knew President Obama was in town for an event a few miles away and thought momentarily the man might be a Secret Service agent. She quickly realized that wasn’t the case.

She begged him to take the car instead. “No. You’re driving,” he said.

Before getting into the passenger’s seat next to Sisk, witnesses said, the gunman fired several shots around the neighborhood with what authorities later said was an “AR-15-style” semiautomatic rifle.

May 18, 2013, 8:00 a.m.

When people ask Carlos Lucero what he does for a living, his answer often stops them in their tracks.

“I throw people off the Stratosphere,” he says jokingly.

Lucero is the man who stands between a person taking the 855-foot plunge to the second level of the Stratosphere Hotel and Casino, or turning away from the controlled fall and taking the Walk of Shame back to the gift shop.

Lucero is the Sky Master, the man who checks the harnesses and straps before thrill-seeking tourists endure the Sky Jump, a ride that opened here in April 2010 and, Lucero says, holds the Guinness World Record for highest commercial decelerator descent.

Think of him as part sky-dive instructor, counselor, bartender and priest.

Many jumpers are panic-stricken. Lucero says soothing things.

Jump masters can’t physically touch any customers to help them jump off; people have to do that on their own power. Instead, he talks to them, making them feel comfortable enough to do something they might be attempting on a dare from friends.

“There is really only two things a person can do — it’s either step off or dive out, and when people try to dive out they hesitate a little bit when they realize how high up they are,” Lucero told the Los Angeles Times.

Most people jump — and are glad they did.

“It’s cool to see some of those clients come back up and say thank you so much for talking me down because that was amazing,” he said.

Sky Jump is different from a bungee jump, where participants can get a running start, jump upside down and do flips. On a Sky Jump, a person is limited to going off the edge of the balcony or leaping off, but Lucero said either way, the adrenaline rush is the same.

Lucero went through three interviews, just to determine what he might do in emergency situations, such as if a person were stuck. He then went through eight weeks of training, learning things like how to apply the harness, and how to be a motivator to get people to jump off a building.

Building the attraction was quite a ride in itself.

Director of Ride Engineering Patrick Brinckerhoff said the challenge came with erecting something on the 108th level of the skyscraper, and there isn’t a cherry-picker tall enough to reach that height. Workers had to take the structure piece by piece in the elevators. It took a year to complete. The ride goes 45 mph while jumpers get a picturesque view of the famed Las Vegas Strip.

Since 2010, 100,000 people have jumped off the Stratosphere to the bull’s-eye that that looks like a small dot from 855 feet up but gets progressively bigger the faster a rider plummets.

Lucero says only 13 people have decided not to take the 17-second plunge down to the bull’s-eye, where jumpers are greeted by onlookers reclining in pool chairs.

His biggest challenge is trying to calm fearful riders who literally cling to the balcony’s steel railing for dear life. Not jumper Kirk Applejohn.

“I work in high places, and the most nerve-racking part of the ride is the first step off the balcony,” the Canadian electrician told The Times. Applejohn said he took the leap during his first visit to Las Vegas. “When I was at the bottom, my first thought was I never wanted this to end.”

Up on the top of the building, Carlos Lucero is smiling.

The fight to point blame in the deadly last voyage of the HMS Bounty is headed for federal court.

Family members of deckhand Claudene Christian, one of two Bounty crew members who died in the sinking, filed a $90 million civil lawsuit this week against the owners of the three-masted square-rigger, which appeared in several Hollywood films, including the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise.

The suit alleges the Bounty was unseaworthy and its captain — Robin Walbridge — was negligent when he set sail with his crew of 15 as Hurricane Sandy steamed toward the U.S. Eastern Seaboard.

Walbridge was also lost in the shipwreck. His body was never recovered after the vessel took on water in stormy seas and sank on October 29. Wind gusts above 100 mph and waves as high as 30 feet flipped Bounty on its side, tossing Walbridge and his 15 shipmates into the Atlantic off the coast of North Carolina. Fourteen crew survived.

The lawsuit accuses the Bounty’s owners of “intentionally placing the lives of the crew at extreme risk for the sole purpose of financial gain.” It also provides detailed examples of allegedly poor maintenance and inadequate crew training, which it says contributed to the sinking and Christian’s death.

“As much as I would like to speak my mind, I can not make any comments as of yet,” wrote Bounty owner Robert Hansen in an e-mail to CNN.

Arguably the best-known traditionally rigged wooden 18th-century replica ship in the world, the Bounty belonged to the New York-based HMS Bounty Organization, which sailed it from port to port as a tourist attraction.

Christian, a 42-year-old former teen beauty queen, had been hired as a Bounty deckhand just five months before. It was her first job aboard a ship.

The Bounty was a replica of the 18th-century British vessel that was rocked by an infamous mutiny. Christian, drawn by the romance and adventure surrounding wooden sailing ships, claimed to be a descendent of Bounty mutineer Fletcher Christian.

During her college days, she cheered for the University of Southern California as one of its Song Girls. Christian also launched a doll-making company. At one point, she co-owned a bar in Los Angeles.

The idea of crewing on a tall ship dawned on her after she visited a replica of Christopher Columbus’ famous wooden vessel La Nina. Her shipmates aboard the Bounty grew to like her always upbeat personality.

The lawsuit comes three months after U.S. Coast Guard and National Transportation Safety Board launched hearings aimed at learning what contributed to the sinking.

Crew members testified that Walbridge knowingly set sail toward Hurricane Sandy from New London, Connecticut, en route to St. Petersburg, Florida. He’s featured in a YouTube video where Walbridge explains how to “get a good ride” out of a hurricane, by sailing “as close to the eye of it as you can.”

“We chase hurricanes,” Walbridge said in the video.

Multiple witnesses also testified that the captain chose to sail knowing there was rot infesting the key parts of the Bounty, including the ships wooden ribs — known as the frames.

Hansen, representing the Bounty’s owners, declined to testify at the hearing, pleading their Fifth Amendment right to avoid self-incrimination.

The lawsuit alleges the owners and Walbridge committed “negligence” and acts of “reckless conduct” by “ignoring unmistakable evidence of rot and deterioration” and the “clear adverse consequences of concealment rather than proper corrective repairs.”

Two days after leaving Connecticut, heavy seas from the approaching storm increased seawater leaking into the ship. The rising water began to overwhelm Bounty’s pumps. Later, the ship’s generators and engines failed, leaving the Bounty at the mercy of Sandy’s fury.

Built in 1960 as the featured prop in the Marlon Brando film “Mutiny on the Bounty,” the 108-foot vessel had been overhauled in 2001 and again in 2006.

The vessel wasn’t licensed to carry passengers out to sea, which allowed operators to avoid requirements reserved for higher classified ships — including a sometimes expensive, time-consuming Coast Guard hull inspection every two years. The ship’s classification also allowed it to hire less experienced crew to serve in officer positions.

The Coast Guard and the National Transportation Safety Board are expected to issue final reports on their investigation as soon as the end of the year.
