After Baylor outlasted BYU in a game of wills, and Iowa overwhelmed Maryland, the NIT championship is all set for Thursday night.

With under two minutes remaining and the season hanging in the balance, BYU’s Matt Carlino hit back-to-back-to-back three-pointers to cut Baylor’s lead to 69-65, but the Baylor Bears hung on to win Tuesday night, 76-70.

Pierre Jackson, who has been a stud in the three games prior to the semis, was Baylor’s high-man with 24 points Tuesday, and he talked about how difficult it was for his Bears to put BYU away in the end.

“It was really tough. They got some great players on their side, some great shooters. Carlino caught fire a little bit, but we stuck to the game plan and executed well.”

BYU was a thorn in Baylor’s side all night long. The Cougars were able to stick around in large part due to their effort on the glass—out-rebounding the Bears, 40-33.

This game, however, was all about execution and timing, and BYU was just a little off on both.

Tuesday night was the second time in three months these two schools have met, and Baylor head coach Scott Drew talked about the respect factor in the postgame press conference.

BYU—you gotta really credit them because they really compete hard, they never give up. It’s a team that’s used to winning. I don’t know how many times they’ve had 25-plus win seasons in a row.

We have a lot of respect for them, and knew it was going to be a hard-fought game, just like the last two times we played them.

This time last year, the Baylor Bears were in the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament—they reached the NIT finals in 2009, but now, they’re back eyeing the 2013 NIT championship.

The Iowa vs. Maryland game was a stark contrast to the first semifinal Tuesday.

Iowa came into Tuesday night having won 10 of its last 13—and doing so by an average of 13.2 points per game—and that trend continued by disposing of Maryland, 71-60.

The Terps just ran into a buzz saw in the Hawkeyes and never really gave themselves a chance.

Maryland turned the ball over 17 times, and as a team, hit just 56.3 percent from the free-throw line.

Disappointed head coach Mark Turgeon summed up his team’s effort, as reality set in that Maryland’s season is officially over.

I thought we played incredibly hard, I thought we tried to win, we just didn’t play smart enough—our shot selection, our turnovers, decision making.

Alex [Len] down there kept the game close, and Logan [Aronhalt] made some big shots for us.

We never quit, we cut it to five twice, we just made two or three really bad decisions. I’m proud of my team, give Iowa a lot of credit, they were great.

New York City might not be Maryland’s favorite place, as the Terps’ season began with a loss to Kentucky at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, and it ended with a loss Tuesday night in Madison Square Garden.

As for Roy Devyn Marble of Iowa, he quickly turned his attention to the Baylor team that the Hawkeyes will face Thursday night for the championship.

I know that Pierre Jackson is a very good point guard, they’re a very athletic team, so it’s going to be a challenge for us defensively and rebounding against this team and to make sure that we get back in transition.

Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery also spoke to the challenge they will face against Baylor.

They’re just a team with a lot of weapons. They’re long and athletic, and when you have a general like that [Jackson], he puts your defense on it’s heels every time down.

They got length, offensive rebounders and they’re going to push it.  We’re comfortable playing an uptempo game like that, but this will be a particularly difficult challenge.

Ultimately, Coach Drew of Baylor summed it up best when he said, “There’s only two happy teams at the end of the year, the team that wins the NCAA and the team that wins the NIT.

Baylor and Iowa have one night to marinate, but by around midnight Thursday night, one team will be happy.

From the opening tip of the season, there was only one question in women’s college basketball: How do you stop Brittney Griner?

Louisville found the answer Sunday night, pulling off one of the biggest upsets in the history of the tournament.

Shoni Schimmel scored 22 points and Monique Reid hit two free throws with 2.6 seconds left to lift the fifth-seeded Cardinals over the defending national champions, 82-81, ending Griner’s incredible career.

The Cardinals made 16 three-pointers, matching the NCAA record, to pull off the victory at Oklahoma City.

“I’m just sad,” Griner said. “I didn’t do what I needed to do to get my team to the Elite Eight and just disappointment in myself.”

No. 1-seeded Baylor (34-2) had won 32 straight games and 74 of 75 behind Griner, the second-highest scoring player in NCAA history. She also holds the career records for blocks and dunks. But the 6-foot-8 star didn’t make a basket until the second half, then committed a foul with 2.6 seconds left that gave Louisville a chance to win.

Reid made those two foul shots, rescuing the Cardinals (27-8) after they squandered a 17-point lead in the last 71/2 minutes.

Hours earlier, the men’s team from Louisville beat Duke, 85-63, to reach the Final Four.

Reid and the Cardinals will play Tennessee in the Oklahoma City Regional final Tuesday for a berth in the Final Four.

Odyssey Sims scored 29 points, including two free throws with 9.1 seconds to go that put Baylor ahead 81-80.

A book written by Amanda Knox ‘will shock you the core’, according to the lawyer who set up her $4m publishing deal.

Robert Barnett insisted the autobiography ‘Waiting to be Heard’ will still be published next month despite an Italian court ordering a re-trial for Knox.

The decision by Italy’s highest court to overturn the 25 year old’s acquittal for the murder of British student Meredith Kercher will also have no effect on her first TV interview to be broadcast on April 30th.

Barnett said Knox’s book about her arrest, trial and eventual release from jail in Italy is ‘very parents nightmare.’

He hinted that the book will contain major revelations that will help sway public opinion in favour of Knox.

He said:’People will see when Amanda Knox goes public with her interview with Diane Sawyer on ABC [on April 30] that she is mature beyond her years.

‘She is extremely smart. She has taken a set of experiences that are almost impossible to imagine and learned from them and marched through them with incredible dignity and respect.

‘What she went through is in some ways every parent’s nightmare, if not every person’s nightmare. She was caught up in a set of terrible circumstances that were not her doing and lost 4½ years of her young life to an inappropriate and improper conviction.

Retrial:
Retrial: Amanda Knox holds hands with her boyfriend James Terrano in downtown Seattle on Sunday

‘While people know the story of the trial, they don’t know the personal story, the family’s story, the prison story and, believe it or not, the legal story.’

Meredith Kercher
Decision: Knox is to face a retrial over the 2007 murder of Meredith Kercher

He added to The Hollywood Reporter:’Aspects of that revealed in the book will shock you to the core.’

Barnett helped negotiate an estimated $4m advance for 25 year old Knox following her return to her home in Seattle, Washington, from prison in Perugia, Italy.

The Washington DC based lawyer has previously negotiated book deals for former President Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary.

Yesterday Amanda Knox collapsed and had to be supported by her boyfriend when she was told she would face a retrial over the murder of Meredith Kercher.

The American was at home with her family in Seattle when she received a phone call at 2am telling her an Italian court had quashed her acquittal for the killing.

She was shattered by the news, and turned to her lover James Terrano in an attempt to ‘keep positive’ despite the new development.

Knox, 25, will not voluntarily return to Italy to stand trial, and is unlikely to be extradited by her native U.S. – she will therefore probably be tried in absentia.

The colour ran from her face as she heard the news,’ a source told the Sun.

Her lawyer phoned her family home in the early hours of the morning after she had gathered relatives and friends together to wait for confirmation of the court’s decision.

Amanda Knox
Sollecito.jpg
Jailed: Knox, 25, and Sollecito, 29, spent four years in jail, but were freed on appeal in 2011 largely on the grounds DNA evidence was flawed

‘She hugged James and then the rest of the family,’ the source said. ‘They are trying to keep positive but it is hard.’

Yesterday’s ruling by the supreme court in Rome means the case will be tried again next year.

Judges accepted that there were ‘contradictions’ in the case, quashing the acquittal of Knox and her ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, 29.

In a dramatic turnaround, the pair, who both spent four years behind bars before they were cleared, were told they must stand trial again for the murder of the 21-year-old British student.

Knox, who has rebuilt her life in her home town of Seattle, cannot be compelled by Italian law to appear at the retrial and might not face extradition for years, if at all.

er lawyer Carlo Dalla Vedova said: ‘Amanda does not intend to come back for the retrial. Her home is in Seattle and she doesn’t need to be here.’

Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito were seen kissing in the wake of the murder

He added that the decision to order a new trial was shocking. ‘She thought that the nightmare was over,’ he said on the steps of the courthouse. ‘But she’s ready to fight.’

Within minutes of the ruling, Knox issued a statement condemning it. The girl known worldwide by her self-awarded nickname ‘Foxy Knoxy’ said: ‘It was painful to receive the news that the Italian supreme court decided to send my case back for revision when the prosecution’s theory of my involvement in Meredith’s murder has been repeatedly revealed to be completely unfounded and unfair.

‘I believe that any questions as to my innocence must be examined by an objective investigation and a capable prosecution.

‘The prosecution responsible for the many discrepancies in their work must be made to answer for them, for Raffaele’s sake, my sake, and most especially for the sake of Meredith’s family.’

Sunday March 24, 2013 at 7:47 a.m.

When Wichita State emerged from the under-eight-minute timeout Saturday against Gonzaga with its starting five on the floor, it was clear the NCAA Tournament third-round game would be mostly decided with the Shockers’ best players in the game.

WSU only had the chance to determine the outcome with its best five because several of its reserves helped keep it close when foul trouble and ineffectiveness damaged the Shockers late in the first half and early in the second.

The starters mostly won it, with help from a sub — Fred Van Vleet beat the shot clock for a three-pointer with 1:26 to go. That put the Shockers ahead by five, and they pulled a 76-70 upset over the top-ranked and No. 1-seeded Bulldogs.

Van Vleet, who played 20 minutes off the bench, also made four free throws down the stretch.

The Shockers saw their one-time 13-point lead over Gonzaga shrink to five at halftime, and the Bulldogs led by as many as eight in the second half. Gonzaga took advantage of a beleaguered WSU lineup, with Carl Hall and Cleanthony Early on the bench with three fouls.

Hall and Early were useful defending Gonzaga star center Kelly Olynyk, but when WSU couldn’t put both of them on the floor together, Olynyk scored 10 points during an eight-minute stretch in the second half.

Without two of their best scorers and best defensive options against Gonzaga big men Olynyk and Elias Harris, the Shockers held it together with its bench players, never allowing Gonzaga’s lead to stretch to double digits.

WSU ended the first half with two starters on the court — Malcolm Armstead and Ron Baker — along with Van Vleet, Chadrack Lufile and Jake White. The Shockers needed important but limited minutes from Lufile and White, the reserve post players, to defend Harris and Olynyk and to hold their own on offense.

White did just that, making a three-pointer with five minutes to go in the first half to put the Shockers ahead by 10 and tipping in a basket at the first-half buzzer that made it 36-31. That basket became more important in the second half, when it appeared Gonzaga would be primed to pull away.

Early was WSU’s best reserve, even though foul trouble kept him from dominant stretches like the ones he enjoyed in Thursday’s second-round win over Pittsburgh. Early finished with 16 points, but some of his fellow subs made an equal impact just through their maintenance efforts in the second half.

Van Vleet scored 13 points, three behind Early and a one-time substitute for the team lead.

Ron Baker had been coming off the bench since his return from injury two weeks ago, but he has started the two NCAA Tournament games and made a major difference Thursday with 16 points, including a personal 5-0 run that turned a one-point deficit into a 67-63 lead with 2:52 to play.

Baker was pressed into extended duty because the Shocker bench essentially has become shorter. Demetric Williams, a senior and usual starter, has been hampered by a knee injury and has played 21 total minutes in WSU’s two tourney games.

Fifth-seeded Rafael Nadal, who is playing his first hard-court tournament in almost a year at the BNP Paribas Open at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, advanced to the fourth round Monday without hitting a ball.

Nadal, who holds 11 Grand Slam titles, was taping his fingers in advance of the third-round match when his opponent, Argentina’s Leonardo Mayer, announced he was withdrawing with a back injury.

Next up for Nadal will be the winner of a third-round match between Ernests Gulbis and 20th-seeded Andreas Seppi. Seppi won the first set over Gulbis, 7-5, Monday.

“It’s bad news for sure, especially for the fans,” Nadal said, “and for the opponent. I talked with him. It seemed like it’s nothing very bad. Just typical back problems beginning when he was warming up his serve. He hopes to be ready to play again in four, five days.”

Nadal said he would go to the gym and get in an extra workout and maybe practice a little bit. “Not a lot,” Nadal said.”

He also spoke about going to the home of tournament owner Larry Ellison on Sunday and playing tennis with Ellison on Ellison’s private court. “It’s great, no?” Nadal said. “It’s an honor.

“I did it last year too. He’s improving a lot. His backhand improved a lot from last year, so that’s great. He changed to a Babolat racket.”

Nadal also experienced his first earthquake Monday. The area was hit with a magnitude-4.7 earthquake.

“I was very scared,” Nadal said. “First time in my life. I was on the massage table preparing for my warm-up. I think the massage table moved even worse.”

At that point Nadal did an imitation of the massage table wobbling.

HBO’s award-winning “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel” will spotlight UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey ahead of next month’s UFC 157 headliner.

HBO’s sports newsmagazine show will air a feature on the 25-year-old fighter on Feb. 19 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

Four days later, Rousey (6-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) becomes the UFC’s first female fighter and headliner when she meets title challenger Liz Carmouche (7-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) on pay-per-view at UFC 157, which takes place Feb. 23 at Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.

It’s the latest mainstream-media appearance for Rousey, a Olympic medalist who’s quickly become the most prominent female fighter in MMA. The “Real Sports” feature is expected to focus heavily on the quick rise that’s been aided by her good looks and fan/media interaction.

“I probably get more attention fighting because of how I look, but if I didn’t how to fight and just looked the way I do, no one would know who I am,” she said in a preview clip of the episode.

Ronda Rousey is the new Strikeforce women’s bantamweight champion.  She has finished all of her opponents by arm bar.

“Real Sports” debuted in 1995 and is currently in its 19th season. It’s one of the most critically acclaimed programs of its genre and has won numerous awards for its investigative and enterprise reporting.

Monday January 28, 2013             12:00 am

With 18:18 remaining and Florida up by 22 points against Mississippi State on Saturday, junior point guard Scottie Wilbekin lobbed the ball to Patric Young for a right-handed, alley-oop slam.

The dunk put an exclamation point on Young’s night.

Young scored 13 points on 6-of-6 shooting as the No. 8 Gators (16-2, 6-0 Southeastern Conference) defeated the Bulldogs for an 82-47 win in Starkville, Miss.

His perfect night from the field propelled Florida to 55.4 percent shooting and a 68 percent clip on two-point field goal attempts.

“He got some putbacks, did a couple nice post moves and did some really, really good things around the basket,” coach Billy Donovan said.

“He gave us a great lift of energy to start the second half as well.”

Young posted on his Twitter account (@BigPatYoung4) Friday: “knees hurt so bad I can’t sleep at night.” But he showed no sluggishness on Saturday.

In 27 minutes, he recorded two blocks and grabbed six rebounds, including four on the offensive end.

On two of his offensive boards, Young followed through to score putback layups.

Saturday’s contest did not begin smoothly for Young. He went without a field goal attempt during the first 8:06. But when the Bulldogs (7-11, 2-4 SEC) keyed in on him in the post, the Gators’ perimeter opened up.

During Young’s scoreless span, UF made 4 of 8 attempts from behind the arc.

“It was hard for him when he got the ball to really do much,” Donovan said.

“He made some great passes out to the perimeter, and he got some of our guards shots.”

When Mississippi State began increasing its focus on perimeter defense, Young broke free.

As Florida closed out the half on a 21-11 stretch for a 41-19 lead, Young scored nine points — eight coming in the paint.

“Once they take one thing away, they have to worry and account for something else,” Young said.

“When our guards start knocking down shots, it opens up opportunities for me, Erik (Murphy) and Will (Yeguete) to get the ball down low, and our team just starts clicking.”

With the 6-foot-9, 249-pound junior’s presence in the paint, Florida held Mississippi State to 37.8 percent shooting on two-pointers.

“I’m just trying to anticipate and think, ‘How can I help my teammate? How can I help us get this stop?’” Young said.

Young is tied with senior guard Mike Rosario as Florida’s third-best scorer in SEC play with 11.8 points per contest. During the past six games, Young has shot 70.7 percent.

Although most of his attempts this season have come within feet of the basket, Young stepped out of his comfort zone Saturday.

With 4:39 remaining and UF owning a 75-44 lead, Young attempted a shot from the left wing with a Bulldogs defender in his face.

Surprisingly, the baseline jumper found net.

“I’ve been working on it,” Young said. “It’s about time I started expanding my game a little bit, right?”
