The choice of GOP budget guru Paul Ryan as the vice-presidential running mate drew sharp, swift responses reflecting the nation’s deeply polarized political landscape.

The conservative Tea Party Express praised Mitt Romney‘s decision to tap Ryan “who is so popular with tea party activists.”

And Sen. Marco Rubio, the Florida Republican who also had been a vice presidential contender, called Ryan a “courageous reformer.” Former presidential candidate Rick Santorum said adding Ryan to the ticket reflects Romney’s commitment to restoring “fiscal sanity,” and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush found the choice “courageous.”

“Mitt Romney made a courageous choice for a BIG solutions election,” said former GOP presidential nominee Newt Gingrich. GOP Sen. John McCain, the 2008 presidential nominee, called the Romney-Ryan ticket “the strongest team.”

The conservative Club for Growth said the pick “sends the message that Gov. Romney is interested in bold reforms.”

Democratsand their allies, though, welcomed the opportunity to bring the Ryan fiscal agenda to voters this fall, and immediately sent out a fundraising email about Romney’s choice of “the architect of the Republican plan to kill Medicare.”

“Congressman Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney are a match made in millionaires’ heaven,” said Rep. Steve Israel of New York, who directs Democratic campaign efforts in the House. “But they’ll be a nightmare for seniors who’ve earned their Medicare benefits.”

Ryan, a Wisconsin congressman who chairs the House Budget Committee, has long been a polarizing figure in national politics for his austere approach to reining in the nation’s deficits and revamping the entitlement system — particularly his Medicare proposal that would allow the next generation of seniors, those now 55, the option of a voucher-like system to buy private insurance outside the existing senior health program. The 42-year-old is one of the so-called “Young Guns” of up-and-coming House Republican leaders.

“A Romney-Ryan ticket is a weapon of mass destruction unapologetically pointed at our Social Security, our Medicare and our hopes for maintaining a modest, middle class lifestyle during our retirement years,” said Eric Kingson, co-founder of the Social Security Coalition and Nancy Altman, co-director of the Social Security Works.

With the choice of Ryan, the presumed GOP presidential nominee has shown the American people that an “extremist, irresponsible and anti-worker agenda is what’s right for our country,” said Mary Kay Henry, the president of the SEIU labor union.

The 1 million-member Progressive Change Campaign Committee called Ryan “a right-wing extremist who wants to end Medicare.”

Rep. Kathy Hochul, the New York Democrat who won a 2011 special election in a race that experts said turned in part on Ryan’s proposed Medicare changes, campaigned on the choice Saturday, saying the country needs fresh choices not a rehashing of “failed ideas.”

Ryan also drew sharp responses from women’s groups over his position against abortion.

The anti-abortion Susan B. Anthony List praised his “pristine pro-life voting record,” and his insistence there be “no ‘truce'” on the issue.

Some congressional Republicans have backed away from Ryan’s fiscal approach, but congressional leaders split along largely partisan lines Saturday over the vice presidential choice, despite the overwhelming approval of Ryan’s budget blueprint by his party in the House and Senate.

House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) called Ryan a “proven leader.” Fellow “Young Gun” Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.), the House majority leader, said by picking Ryan, a friend, Romney “could not have made a finer choice for the future direction of the country.”

Democrats characterized the choice as a “Hail Mary” pass to appeal to conservatives and the tea party base of the Republican Party that will alienate independent voters.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nv.) said Romney “has doubled down on his commitment to gut Social Secuirty and end Medicare as we know it” by “catering to the tea party and the far right.”

And Rep. Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco, the Democratic minority leader, said: “The choice Americans are facing could not be more clear.”

Tim Pawlenty‘s web site at www.timpawlenty.com as of 9:02 p.m. Eastern Time has a blank write page that only says “Please come back later.” at the top of the page. The web site Newsninja2012 reports that Sarah Palin‘s web site was “scrubbed” the night before she was nominated for vice president by John McCain in 2008 and to look for that sign this year.

All the other web sites suggested business as usual for those candidates including Florida Senator Marco Rubio, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell, Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan and Ohio Senator Rob Portman. Oddly enough, Bobby Jindal’s web site comes appearing as “hacked by Dr.SkaiN.” It is doubtful that is any indication of his possible candidacy for vice president.

If this indication is right then Mitt Romney is going with Tim Pawlenty. Pawlenty, who was consider for the vice president spot in 2008 by McCain, is a former two term governor of Minnesota. Many conservatives see Pawlenty as having had a strong fiscally conservative record as governor in a more politically liberal and Democrat-dominated “blue” state. Pawlenty is a strong fiscally and socially conservative Republican who also grew up in a working class family who can appeal to conservatives and independents in many states.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney said in an interview on Fox News the other night that the most important qualification of the vice president is being qualified to become president if necessary, as has happened on many occasions in history. If Romney is choosing Pawlenty, he clearly is believing his record as governor of Minnesota for two terms reflects his qualification to become president.

If I were investing my own money, whom would I trust to run a company and make a profitable return?

If the choice were between someone who had been successful and made buckets of money for others who had invested with him, or someone who had not only lost money but who had also actually taken investors’ money and given it to some of his cronies … well, whom would you trust?

Let’s face it: Mitt Romney has made buckets of money for those who have invested their own money with him in his business ventures. Even the Obama camp admits that.

On the other hand President Barack Obama has invested hundreds of billions of dollars in the auto sector, energy sector and “stimulus” sector of our economy … that is, none of his own discretionary money we are aware of, but hundreds of billions of tax dollars the IRS demands from us every paycheck. But he didn’t stop there. In our name – USA taxpayers – Obama has borrowed trillions of dollars to invest in many sectors. What are the results?

To save GM and Chrysler, he invested $82 billion tax dollars. Surely this hefty amount would “save” Detroit? No, both companies declared bankruptcy anyway. By the way, those two companies still owe about $24 billion.

Union workers didn’t lose a nickel, but those of us who had GM or Chrysler stock in our pension plans lost our shirts. Oh, and 2,500 non-union autoworkers lost their jobs not counting the closings of hundreds of dealerships and workers who lost their jobs.

In the energy arena, Obama not only shut down a hundred thousand or so jobs through his moratorium on drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, but he also invested tens of billions of taxpayer dollars in green energy, promising to create 5,000,000 new jobs. So, how’s that working? Can you say Solyndra, Beacon Power or Ener1? Not any more, since they’ve all filed for bankruptcy.

And, let’s not forget the nearly trillion-dollar investment in “shovel-ready jobs” poured into an abyss at the beginning of his presidency.

How many jobs have all of Obama’s investments created? Checking the Bureau of Labor Statistics, we have fewer Americans working today than we had before he took over investing in our economy.

We have to give the president credit – literally. He’s spent trillions of taxpayer dollars trying to rev up the economy, and he’s borrowed nearly $6 trillion more that our grandchildren will have to repay. If I were investing my own tax dollars, whom would I want to run this country? If you earn a paycheck, you’re investing too. Choose carefully. Our grandchildren will judge our choices.

Are we now being judged by high school?

The revelation that Mitt Romney, in high school at Cranbrook School, once led what Post reporter Jason Horowitz describes as “a prep school posse” to tackle John Lauber, pin him down and cut his bleached-blond hair has proved troubling to quite a few. If that’s a good-natured prank or shenanigan, say they, I’ll eat my hat. This was cruel and callous and no wonder the other participants and observers felt so terrible later.

I agree.

Still, it is at moments like this during election season that I sigh and say, “Hey, remember that time Andrew Jackson shot a man?”

But of course this is different.

This is high school.

The secret to a good high school experience is to have a bad memory.

Look through any yearbook. Thumb through any literary magazine. High school is no one’s best angle. You are too serious, or not serious enough. You care too much about what other people think, or too little. You make the mistake of wearing T-shirts that tell people that “the voices in my head don’t like you,” or dressing in pink every Thursday because That is What You Do. You make too many extra-credit dioramas. Your skin looks terrible. You gape in every picture as though trying to give your best impression of a startled haddock. All your Favorite Quotations that seemed so Thoughtful and Profound make you wince five years later.

And with good reason: You are not the same person you were in high school.

High school is the primordial soup out of which we gradually emerge, if we are lucky.

You come back to the reunion. “Oh,” you say, “look! Gail still has gills!”

“But Nerd Jeff! Jeff’s figured out how to make fire!”

Most life after high school is a form of revenge.

The nerds gather and conspire against the jocks. The 4-H Club president goes on “America’s Next Top Model.” The prom court vanish into obscurity and never leave town.

If Romney really were king of Cranbrook, I pity him. Most literature and film suggests that there is a perverse lack of correlation between ruling the high school roost and going on to rule much of anything else. But then again, most literature and film about high school is the vengeance of those who were locked into their lockers and called demeaning names.

If we judged our leaders by who they were in high school, we would have precious few leaders left.

Ben Franklin probably liked to dip pigtails in ink, and George Washington never met a cherry tree he didn’t want to chop, and Abraham Lincoln — don’t get me started on the guy.

If we’re judged by high school, who would escape hanging?

The great dread of Facebook was that everyone would judge you by your spring break. Eventually, our pool of elected officials would be reduced to the select few who had never done anything wrong. And those are the last people you want to be in charge of anything.

High school, especially an all-boys high school, bears a certain undeniable resemblance to “Lord of the Flies.” I went to an all-girls school, which meant that the worst thing that could happen to you would be that you would become overconfident in your math ability or someone would severely dent your self-esteem, or — well, actually, watch “Mean Girls.”

Fewer people, nowadays, are running around with spears and painted faces, shouting about hunting the Beast and cutting its throat and spilling its blood. Thank heavens. There are policies in place. But the instinct remains.

Pranking and bullying are absolutely serious. But there is an apocalyptic quality to high school. It is uniquely harrowing. The hallway of lockers is a gauntlet. The day you get out of it, it suddenly occurs to you that none of it mattered. But until that day — it is the universe. Things that in the real world would be venial are absolutely venal. This is why you meet someone in an airport decades later and feel compelled to apologize.

If we disqualified people who behaved like jerks in high school from running for public office, our political system would collapse. Maybe we would be the better for it. Most of the noisiest objections to Mitt Romney hinge on things he did more than 30 years ago. Put the dog on the roof of the car. Bullied someone in high school.

Most life is premised on the idea that you will not be the same person that you were in high school. This would be a shame. You will have a certain superficial resemblance to the person you were. You will still be using the same knees.

But there are dozens of each of us. We are not quite who we were yesterday. The person we were at band practice and the person who showed up at summer camp a week later were entirely different. There are better reasons to judge anyone than how he acted when he was 17. This is not to say that what he did wasn’t cruel, or that it tells us nothing about him. But as a criterion for the presidency, I’d put it just a few notches above the curious incident of the dog in the crate.

Yes, it was awful. But if Romney’s policy positions over the years have shown us anything, it is that he is capable of great change.

We are not who we were in high school. Thank God for that.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney plans to campaign Monday in New Hampshire with Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte, whose name has been tossed around as a possible running mate. Like past appearances with other possible V.P. contenders such as Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, today’s event could be viewed as a “tryout” for the young senator.

Ayotte, a New Hampshire native who endorsed Romney months before the primary there, has been coy about the prospects that she could be on the list to serve as Romney’s number two this fall. She was an active surrogate for the former Massachusetts governor throughout the primary season.

“We know that with his experience, he will make sure that we get our fiscal house in order in Washington, that we stop crushing all of us and our children with mountains of debt, and that we get Americans back to work,” Ayotte said of Romney when she endorsed him in November.

Events like these act as trial runs for hypothetical tickets, giving the staff of each camp the opportunity to gauge the chemistry between the candidates and test the public perception of the duo in public.

In an interview with Fox News in November, Romney said he was considering her for the slot.

“There are probably 15 names of people,” Romney said in response to a question about his list of possible running mates, “including Kelly Ayotte.”

Romney, who owns a vacation home in New Hampshire and served one term as governor of neighboring Massachusetts, is very popular among Republicans in the state and won the primary there by a landslide in January.

On Friday night, Ed Conard put an end to a mystery that had been growing in political circles when he sent a statement to Politico identifying himself as the person behind a $1 million contribution to a “super PAC” that backs Mitt Romney’s campaign for the presidency. “I am the individual who formed and funded W Spann LLC. I authorized W Spann LLC’s contribution to Restore Our Future PAC.”

The donation made headlines because it just looked so fishy. On Thursday, NBC’s Michael Isikoff wrote that the “mystery company” that gave $1 million to a political committee backing Mitt Romney only existed for a few months. At the time, Isikoff said that the donation “provides a vivid example of how secret campaign cash is being funneled in ever more circuitous ways into the political system.”

Conard said he asked Restore Our Future to amend its records to disclose him as the donor, and the PAC’s spokeswoman issued a statement saying it would do so. Conard was a top official at Bain Capital, which was cofounded by Romney. He had listed the company’s location to the same Madison Avenue address as Bain’s, which had raised even more suspicions. But Politico says that while Conard retired from Bain in 2007 he still “maintains an office of his own at that Madison Avenue address.”

The company, W Spann LLC was formed in March, and gave the donation to Restore Our Future, a “super PAC” formed by Romney backers, in April. The company was dissolved July 12. On Friday, Reuters reported that two campaign watchdog groups, Democracy 21 and the Campaign Legal Center, filed complaints with the Federal Election Commission and the Department of Justice asking for an investigation. As a “super PAC” Restore Our Future can receive unlimited cash from corporations and individuals but must disclose the name of its donors.

It’s still unclear why Conard tried to make his donation anonymous, but the whole controversy isn’t expected to affect Romney in the long run. “The reality of political campaigns is that where the money in a particular races comes from is of almost no interest to the average voter,” the Washington Post’s Chris Cillizza wrote.

Romney has entered the race to be the Republican candidate for US president in
2012, saying President Barack Obama has “failed America”.

Mr Romney blamed Mr Obama for the economic woes frustrating voters, like
federal spending and unemployment during a speech in New Hampshire.

If elected, he said he would make the US the world’s top job creator.

The wealthy businessman is the current frontrunner in the Republican
field.

BBC North America editor Mark Mardell, in New Hampshire, says Mr Romney – a
tremendous fund raiser and serious seasoned campaigner – is clearly the man for
others to beat.

But he is yet to convince conservatives he really is one of them and yet to
convince the media that he has the flair and panache need to maintain interest
and momentum, our correspondent adds.

The Republican multi-millionaire was beginning his campaign in the state of
New Hampshire, an important early-voting state which is expected to hold its
primary election to pick a candidate in February 2012.

If the delivery was occasionally hesitant, Mitt Romney’s message had been
painstakingly honed. In this campaign he will style himself as a trustworthy
chief executive for the nation – able to draw on vast business experience in
righting the perceived economic wrongs of the Obama administration.

Team Romney are well aware of their man’s past reputation for aloofness, so
the pitch was carefully framed in terms of human experience. The
multi-millionaire candidate declared himself heart-broken by the struggles of
everyday Americans coping with unemployment, repossessions and soaring petrol
prices. In shirtsleeves, rather than the 2008 business suit, Mr Romney seemed
approachably relaxed.

A gloomy critique of Barack Obama was counter-balanced by sunny optimism
about America’s potential. US voters dislike outright negativity. But as long as
the economy continues to splutter, Mitt Romney will make capital from the
straight-up contrast between himself and the president. However, his strategy
will have to evolve when the inevitable attacks from his own side begin.

 

Analysts say Mr Romney’s speech, which was released
ahead of his announcement, is also tailored to appeal to conservatives who hold
great sway in choosing the Republican presidential nominee in Iowa and South
Carolina.

“Government under President Obama has grown to consume almost 40% of our
economy,” Mr Romney said.

“At the time, we didn’t know what sort of a president he would make…. Now,
in the third year of his four-year term, we have more than promises and slogans
to go by. Barack Obama has failed America.”

Mr Romney has said, if elected, he would balance the federal budget and limit
federal spending at 20% of gross domestic product.

Mr Romney’s announcement on Thursday marks the second time he will be running
for the Republican nomination.

He lost the party’s 2008 nomination race to Arizona Senator John McCain and
has spent the four intervening years building support within the party and
preparing for the 2012 race.

Our correspondent says that Mr Romney’s biggest problem is that as governor
of Massachusetts he introduced a type of compulsory health insurance which looks
very similar to President Obama’s reforms which are heartily loathed by most
Republicans.

He also has a reputation for flip flopping – moving from being a relatively
liberal Republican to a hard line conservative, our correspondent adds.

He is also a Mormon, which may not bother most Americans, but does concern
some evangelical Christians.

The pool of Republican candidates has been slow to solidify, with former
speaker of the House of Representatives Newt Gingrich and former governor of
Minnesota Tim Pawlenty the only other major Republicans to have announced their
candidacy.

During the past week, Texas Governor Rick Perry was thought to be considering
a bid, with Representative Michele Bachmann also stepping towards a run.

Meanwhile, former vice-presidential Republican candidate Sarah Palin was also
set to appear in New Hampshire on Thursday, though her aides have not said
precisely where she will turn up in the state.
