Margaret Anderson
Alleged gunman Benjamin Colton Barnes.
January 1, 2012, 11:25 p.m.

A ranger was shot to death on New Year’s Day and the 368-square-mile park was closed while 150 officers searched for the gunman over snowy, rugged terrain.

Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said Benjamin Colton Barnes, 24, was a “strong person of interest” in the slaying of Margaret Anderson, 34. Authorities recovered his vehicle, with weapons and body armor inside, Troyer said. A park spokesman said Barnes was an Iraq war veteran.

The incident began about 10:20 a.m. when a man sped past a checkpoint, park spokesman Kevin Bacher said. One ranger began following him, and Anderson eventually blocked the road with her car to stop him.

The gunman fired shots at Anderson and the ranger behind him, but only Anderson was hit, Bacher said. The shooter escaped on foot.

Authorities were following tracks in the snow, Troyer said, and planned to bring in an airplane with heat-seeking capabilities.

“We believe we have a good track on him, but he’s way ahead of us,” Troyer said Sunday evening.

“We do not know what resources the shooter has,” Bacher said. “We’re not sure what we’re up against. We know that he has a weapon, but we don’t know how many.”

Authorities asked people to stay away from the park, and for those inside to leave.

“We do have a very hot and dangerous situation,” Troyer said.

Bacher said about 125 people were still at the visitors center Sunday night along with five law enforcement officers protecting it. He said crews had considered removing them in armored vehicles, but decided not to risk it.

Park Supt. Randy King said Anderson had two young daughters and a husband who was working as a ranger elsewhere in the park at the time of the shooting.

“It’s just a huge tragedy — for the family, the park and the park service,” King said.

Barnes was also a suspect in the early Sunday morning shooting of four people at a house party south of Seattle, police said.
