There is nothing “business as usual” about death.

People grieve in different ways, and maybe Tony Stewart feels he needs the distraction of today’s race at Watkins Glen. But it is not the time, not when Kevin Ward Jr. has been dead less than 24 hours after being hit by Stewart during a sprint car race in upstate New York.

Police have said the investigation of the fatal crash is “not criminal,” freeing Stewart to do whatever he pleases. Racing so soon afterward sends the wrong message, however, trivializing the gravity of the situation. A man is dead and, criminal or not, Stewart is responsible as the driver of the car that hit Ward. Show some respect for the investigative process — and Ward’s family — and sit this one out.

That ultimately was the decision Sunday morning, a few hours after his team first said that it would be “business as usual” at Watkins Glen. Instead, Regan Smith will drive Stewart’s car.

Racing is a dangerous sport, and anyone who climbs into a car has made his or her peace with that. But there is a big difference between taking your life in your hands and taking someone else’s life. Stewart might have thought that racing today would give him a respite from the awfulness of last night’s crash — police said he was “visibly shaken” afterward — but it won’t.

Quite the opposite.

Try as Stewart might to pretend things are “business as usual,” they’re not. And they won’t be for a long time.

August 9, 2014

A motorist killed by a suspected drunk driver headed in the wrong direction on the 210 Freeway early Saturday in Azusa has been identified, authorities said.

The victim, 19-year-old Justin Romo of El Monte, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred in the freeway’s westbound lanes shortly after 3 a.m., authorities said.

The suspected wrong-way driver was later apprehended by Azusa police, authorities said.

The westbound lanes were shut down for several hours before being reopened.

Skidegate band councillor Godfrey Williams Jr, died last Sunday of a heart attack at his home after waiting for an ambulance.

August 08, 2014                9:25 PM PT

A northern B.C. band councillor, in the remote community of Haida Gwaii, is dead after a heart attack last Sunday and his doctor is criticizing the hour it took for his ambulance to arrive.

‘The most important intervention likely to help a patient with sudden cardiac arrest is early defibrillation’– Dr. Tracy Morton

In a two-page letter, Dr. Tracy Morton details the call he overheard being dispatched to the home of Skidegate B.C. band councillor Godfrey Williams Jr.

Morton says the ambulance, which was supposed to be only 10 minutes away, wasn’t available and one had to be brought in from Sandspit, which is a  20-minute ferry ride and a 20 kilometre drive.

Twenty-five minutes after the first call, Morton says he decided to leave the hospital and go to the home himself. When he got there, an hour had elapsed and ambulance paramedics from Sandspit were only just delivering their second shock to Williams’ heart, he said.

Despite efforts to resuscitate him, Williams was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival at the hospital.

In his two-page letter to the Northern Health Authority, Morton says the Queen Charlotte ambulance station has experienced staffing shortfalls for nearly a year.

“Neither the public, nor the hospital are advised of ambulance coverage gaps,” he wrote. “There have been several instances of patients experiencing delays awaiting responses, but none to this point have led to as serious an outcome as this.”

Chances of survival favourable

Morton says in his opinion, Williams’s chances of survival would have been good.

“The fact that he had a shockable rhythm well over an hour post-arrest suggests he would very likely have responded positively to treatment,” he wrote.

B.C. ambulance  told CBC News that a paramedic did respond to the call within 11 minutes. Unfortunately, spokeswoman Linda Lupini says the paramedic did not have a defibrillator because another staffer could not respond to the call.

She did not say whether this was because the local ambulance was unavailable.

“It’s a tragic situation and its not something we feel good about, but we are working very hard right now and we will continue to work hard with the Haida Gwaii community and other remote communities to deal with some of the real challenges of providing emergency medical services there,” she said.

Lupini said in April, Provincial Health Services appointed a new leadership team to address issues with B.C. Ambulance.

In his letter, Morton says, “the most important intervention likely to help a patient with sudden cardiac arrest is early defibrillation.”

A nationwide manhunt is underway for a champion boater who may have faked his own death, according to authorities.

Andrew Biddle has been missing since a boating accident last month. Police believe Biddle may have faked his own death to avoid criminal charges.

Police say the father of two was with another racer, Justin Belz, riding in a pontoon boat near Longport, New Jersey, on July 20 when they hit a buoy and plowed into a jetty.

Belz survived by swimming to shore and a massive search for Biddle was called off just a day later. Belz was being interviewed by authorities, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

A witness to the accident, Tom Murphy, said, “It just seems like the most ridiculous thing to pull off.”

Officials said in a statement to ABC News that Biddle is considered a “wanted person,” and they “believe that Mr. Biddle ‘staged an incident,’ to avoid prosecution.”

ABC News’ legal expert Dan Abrams said, “It’s not illegal to fake your death. The problem is once you do it, you almost inevitably end up committing other crimes by not showing up for court, not paying your taxes, fraud, etc.”

According to prosecutors, Biddle and his business and racing partner, Tracy Blumenstein, have been indicted on multiple counts of theft by deception and fraud.

“When someone is facing criminal charges and he disappears, the authorities are going to be suspicious,” Abrams said.

Court documents obtained by ABC News allege Biddle accepted a $20,000 down payment for a boat that he never supplied to the customer.

Neither Blumenstein nor Biddle’s attorneys would comment on the investigations.

he disappearance of an 18-year-old Bedford Township woman is being investigated as a possible abduction, authorities said today.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office is conducting an air and ground search for Hayley Turner who was last heard telling a friend, after stopping to check on a man in a ditch, that ?He has a gun.? At that point, the cell phone call was disconnected, according to information provided during a press conference conducted by the sheriff??s office at 11 a.m. today.

After a 17-hour air and ground search, an 18-year-old Michigan girl missing since Thursday has been found alive and delivered to police.

Hayley Turner was 40 miles from home when she was seen jumping out of a moving vehicle in Ecorse by an unidentified woman.

A homeowner found her sitting near West Outer Drive and East 19th Street, shirtless around 2:30pm today.

According to Click on Detroit, Turner gave the homeowner her mother’s cell phone number before the homeowner drove her to the Ecorse Police Department.

Police believed Turner may have been abducted when she disappeared after a phone conversations with a friend that was cut off.

Turner had gone to a local video store to rent some movies and spoke to her friend as she headed home around 10pm.

A rental receipt would show that the Notre Dame Academy student had rented Muppets Most Wanted and Divergent.

Employees would later tell the authorities that she was happy and smiling.

On her drive home, she told her friend that she had spotted a man lying in a ditch and that she was going to check on him.

‘Seconds later, Hayley told her friend “he has a gun” and the phone was disconnected,’ Monroe County Sheriff Dale Malone related to reporters at a news conference.

According to Bedford Now, the unidentified friend called her father, who sped to the scene only to find his daughter’s car running but empty, her iPad missing but her wallet still there.

The ensuing search utilized dogs, helicopters, and even enlisted FBI agents.

A potential suspect could be a white male described in a call to authorities Friday morning.

Time to cowabunga your way into a music video about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! Yup, given that there’s a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, and that it opens this Friday (August 8), there’s never been a better time to set these ninja moves to harmonies.

Get amped for the Michael Bay-directed movie by watching Pentatonix’s musical ode to the film in the form of the song and video for “We Are Ninjas.” The video premiered tonight on MTV and you can watch it below for sweet harmonies about pizza, saving the day and some seriously choreographed dance scenes.

The whole thing was filmed at Paramount Studios, so how did they achieve the street-like feel? Plenty of fog, streetlights and filming at night.

“The ideas is we’re kind of riffing of the turtles,” said director Melissa Bolton-Klinger in a behind the scenes clip. Dark alleyway scenes, kind of West Side Story meets ninjas.” Sounds about right!

BRB, ordering a pizza and loading up old episodes of TMNT on Youtube to prepare. Maybe the mutants will head to Broadway next? If so, Pentatonix should definitely be involved so we can have more odes to pepperoni.

A U.S. general was killed and more than a dozen people were wounded on Tuesday, including a German general, in the latest insider attack by a man believed to be an Afghan soldier, U.S., German and Afghan officials said.

The U.S. Army said late on Tuesday the slain general was Major General Harold Greene, a senior officer with the international military command ISAF. He was the most senior U.S. military official killed in action overseas since the war in Vietnam, military officials said.

“These soldiers were professionals, committed to the mission,” U.S. Army Chief of Staff Ray Odierno said in a statement, referring to the soldiers killed and wounded in the attack.

Pentagon spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby told reporters that “many were seriously wounded,” and the gunman was killed in the attack, which took place on Tuesday at the Marshal Fahim National Defense University, a training center in Kabul.

The attack raised fresh questions about the ability of NATO soldiers to train and advise Afghan security forces as western nations gradually withdraw. The U.S. and German generals were on a routine visit, the Pentagon said.

A U.S. official said the gunman fired on the foreign soldiers using a light machine gun.Afghanistan‘s Defense Ministry described him as a “terrorist in army uniform.”

The German military said its general was one of 14 coalition troops wounded in Tuesday’s attack, adding that his life was not in danger. Seven Americans and five British troops were among the wounded, an Afghan official said.

Past insider attacks have eroded trust while straining foreign efforts to train Afghanistan’s 350,000-strong security force and prepare them to fight the Taliban once most U.S. and NATO forces depart.

U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel spoke by phone with General Joe Dunford, who commands U.S. and international troops in Afghanistan, about the incident, Kirby said. He said the shooting was being investigated jointly by Afghan authorities and the international military coalition that is winding down its long mission in Afghanistan.

The Afghan president was quick to condemn the attack, saying the delegation had been visiting the facility to help build the country’s security forces.

The Taliban says insider attacks reflect their ability to infiltrate the enemy. International military coalition officials say the incidents often arise over misunderstandings or altercations between troops.

U.S. military officials said it was too soon to say whether the high-ranking officers had been specifically targeted by the shooter.

“We remain committed to our mission in Afghanistan and will continue to work with our Afghan partners to ensure the safety and security of all coalition soldiers and civilians,” Odierno said.

‘PERNICIOUS THREAT’

In 2012, dozens of incidents forced international troops to take measures to reduce interaction with their Afghan partners. Since then, the number of insider attacks has fallen sharply.

According to a Pentagon report on the war in April, there were 15 insider attacks against foreign troops in 2013, down from 48 in 2012.

“Despite this sharp decline, these attacks may still have strategic effects on the campaign and could jeopardize the relationship between coalition and ANSF personnel,” the report stated. “Insurgents remain intent on utilizing insider attacks as an integral component of their asymmetric strategy.”

The report concluded that armed guards known as ‘guardian angels’ accompanying coalition officials had reduced casualties by counter-attacking those who tried to kill foreigners.

Meanwhile, insider attacks against Afghan forces were on the rise, the report said.

Like other Western countries, the United States is planning to leave a residual force in Afghanistan after the NATO mission ends this year, mainly focused on supporting Afghan forces. But U.S. officials say that first they must sign a bilateral troop deal, which cannot be finalized until Afghanistan resolves an election dispute and swears in a new president.

The departure will leave Afghanistan’s forces – built from scratch since 2001 and still struggling with problems of incomplete training, illiteracy and desertion – in charge of the bulk of the fight with the Taliban.

Pentagon spokesman Kirby said that despite protective measures it would be impossible to eliminate the threat of such attacks entirely.

“The insider threat is … a pernicious threat. And it’s difficult to always ascertain,” Kirby said. “Afghanistan is still a war zone.”

Ed Royce, chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives’ Foreign Affairs Committee, said the progress in protecting foreign troops serving in Afghanistan had been inadequate.

“Many brave U.S forces are working hard to help stand up the Afghan forces so they can continue to take the lead in Afghanistan,” he said. “They don’t deserve to be victims of such cowardly terrorist attacks.”

In a similar attack on Tuesday, several people were wounded in Afghanistan’s eastern province of Paktia when a policeman opened fire on international and Afghan forces, police chief Zalmay Oryakhil said.

Adding to the tension, a NATO air strike hit a vehicle carrying civilians in western Herat province, local officials said, killing four members of a family returning from a wedding, including two children.

If You Are The One - promo

AUGUST 03, 2014               2:26PM

IT’S a show which has 50 million viewers and reveals the brutal side of love in China.

If you thought Channel Ten’s The Bachelor was harsh, then you’ll think SBS show If You Are The One is simply terrifying.

The reality TV show, which has a massive cult following here as well as in China, puts women in the box seat in their quest for love.

No wonder they say love hurts, boys.

These ladies don’t hold back as eligible men come on stage to be judged by not one, but by 24 women.

Not only do the girls have all the power, unlike The Bachelor, but they all have a blue light which switches to red the second they’re not interested.

This is how men in China compete for the attention of the ladies.

In the Channel Ten reality show, women all compete for the attention of one man, for a whole season.

The Chinese on the other hand are more efficient. A lot more.

The girls know what they want and churn through at least three hopeful male candidates each episode. Within minutes the contestants have nutted out common interests, if they want children and where they would like to live.

The lucky ones who find a match win a cruise to the Aegean and fashion shoes before the next ad break.

We told you it’s brutal and quick.

In this show it's the ladies who have all the power.

And while there’s no doubt The Bachelor is a hit, it clearly has nothing in terms of strength in numbers to its Chinese counterpart, which is broadcast here on SBS.

The broadcaster has commissioned 19 Reasons To Love If You Are The One, which sees local celebrities and comedians counting down their favourite parts of the show as part of a special show which airs tonight.

The show is hosted by Jeannette Francis from The Feed, and starring a mix of local comedians, musicians, TV and radio personalities.

Yumi Stynes, Benjamin Law, Ronny Chieng, Toby Truslove, Claire Hooper, Jake Stone, news.com.au reporter Charlotte Willis and Marc Fennell will reveal everything from priceless relationship tips to what it takes to be a contestant.

There’s honest and then there’s brutal.

And according to The Feed host and film critic Fennell, it gives The Bachelor a run for its money in the brutal stakes.

“I think The Bachelor is inherently dishonest, and I think the primary appeal of If You Are The One is that it’s a lot more honest” the SBS presenter told news.com.au

“In fact, for me this is brutal honesty at its very best and I have to hand it to the Chinese for efficiency.”

You think The Bachelor is brutal, this Chinese dating show takes the cake.

Fennell said he also thought the Chinese show turned the tables in favour of the women whereas The Bachelor brought out his “inner angry feminist.”

Fennell, who is judging the short films the male contestants produce as part of the Chinese show said the clips were hilarious and heartwarming at the same time.

“These guys certainly wear their hearts on their sleeves,” he said. “Some of the things they do to get attention are just ridiculous.”

If You Are The One airs on 7.30pm tonight on sbs 2.

New episodes follow the special at 8:30pm and then new episodes will continue on both Saturdays and Sundays at 7:30pm.

Where is she? Mother-of-two Jennifer Huston, 38, vanished as she ran errands in Oregon on July 24, but a new sighting placed her in Washington on Thursday

Police believe they have firmed up a sighting of missing Oregon mom Jennifer Huston boarding a car ferry in Washington state, some 300 miles from where she was last seen.

Deputies in the San Juan Islands are investigating what appears to be a solid description of the 38-year-old in Anacortes on the morning of Thursday July 31, one week after her disappearance.

A couple say they saw a blonde female in her 30s on the 9am ferry to Friday Harbor in a car that matched the make and model of Huston’s green Lexus, including a crack in the windshield.

However the ferry system in the area is connected to 20 terminals, including Seattle, making the search to find Huston on surveillance footage even more cumbersome.

‘If that was her on the ferry, she could be on Orcas Island right now, she could be on Lopez, she could be on Shaw, she could be anywhere using the ferry systems,’ San Juan County Under sheriff Bruce Distler told KPTV.

The unconfirmed sighting adds further mystery to the whereabouts of the married mother-of-two.

Huston, from Dundee, Oregon, was last seen taking cash out at a bank, filling up her car with gas and then buying snacks and non-lethal sleeping pills at a Rite Aid in nearby Newberg around 6.22pm on July 24.

She also withdrew a ‘small sum’ of money from an ATM, but it is not known how much.

Her cell phone stopped working minutes after she was seen at the gas station, but police said it was not due to a dead battery, according to Fox News, and she has not used her credit cards since.

She told her husband, Kallen Huston, she had some errands to run, but then never returned home.

At a press conference this week, Mr Huston – who has passed a polygraph test – said he believed that finding his wife’s 99 Lexus would be the key to finding her.

He also pleaded directly with his wife for her safe return.

‘Jennifer, if you could see this or hear this, I love you,’ Mr Huston said.

‘You have a ton of support from the community. If you can come home, please do. The boys need you. I need you. I love you.

‘We’ll never stop looking for you.”

Local police called off their search on Friday with one final aerial search across rural roads in the area.

They also visited the San Juan Islands where the family used to visit but made no progress.

‘After [Friday’s] flight, the Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office will have covered all rural areas of Yamhill County and no further search efforts are planned for Yamhill County,’ a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office said.

‘If additional information arises, search efforts will be resumed as necessary.’

The latest sighting is expected to reactivate the search.

A clearly emotional Mr Huston, flanked by fellow members of her family, said he keeps calling his wife’s cell phone even though it’s been turned off on the hope someone might finally answer, KOIN reported.

Police released these surveillance footage stills of Huston's car at the gas station she visited after withdrawing money from a local bank

Last seen: Police released these surveillance footage stills of Mrs Huston’s car at a gas station just minutes before she vanished last Thursday. Her cell phone stopped working shortly after

As to questions surrounding her final known purchases, a Gatorade, trail mix, and sleeping aids, her husband said they were not a cause for alarm – the sports drink was because it was a hot day, the trail mix was something they had in the house often, and the pills could be attributed to a headache she’d been suffering from for three days.

He went on to call the disappearance ‘completely out of character for her. She loves me, She loves the boys.’

Captain Jeff Kosmicki of the Newberg-Dundee Police Department said her car, a 1999 dark green Lexus LX 470 SUV, would be able to travel 300 to 350 miles after she filled up the tank.

Mr Huston, who has passed a polygraph test, told investigators his wife had left to run errands and had been complaining of a headache for several days before she went out but said nothing else was out of the ordinary.

Mrs Huston was a stay-at-home mother to her two sons, aged two and six.

Her husband previously said he’d told them she was on vacation because he couldn’t bear to tell them the truth.

He also expressed his fears that she might be ‘in a ditch somewhere’ after driving her car off the road and urged motorists to look out for his wife.

Mr Huston has said that his wife complained of headaches three days before disappearing, but she hadn't seen a doctor. At a press conference on Monday, he said he feared she'd crashed her car

‘I ask that anybody helping us, regardless of the area they are in, look off to the left and off to the side of the highways,’ he said.

‘This is totally unlike her. She’s a devoted mother. She’s just a very good person, and for her to do something like this is completely out of the norm.’

She was last seen wearing black and pink Nike shoes and black yoga pants.

Accused: The 34-year-old was arraigned Tuesday on charges he kidnapped 15-year-old Abigail last October

Investigators examining the New Hampshire crime scene where they believe Abigail Hernandez was held prisoner brought a K-9 unit in to aid with their search on Thursday afternoon.

Just after lunch a single officer took his dog into the river at the back of Kibby’s New Hampshire property.

It was the first time officers had extended the search beyond the suspect’s trailer and the shipping container in his yard, where Abby is believed to have been held captive.

This comes as a woman claims she was attacked by Abigail Hernandez’s alleged kidnapper – after he stormed onto her property in an angry rage – has told MailOnline, ‘I could see it in his eyes. He was crazy’.

The agent scoured the river for around 45 minutes with six other officer before emerging with an object wrapped in a grey plastic bag.

After excitedly gesturing to colleagues, he took the evidence away for analysis.

Around an hour later Kibby’s blue Honda Civic was taken away on a state police flatbed tow.

Tammy Shackford says she was viciously shoved to the ground by Nathaniel Kibby in March following a long running dispute over a car smash, which saw him rear-end her boyfriend and total his truck.

Following weeks of arguments over how much money Kibby owed for the damage he had caused, the fight came to a head when he turned up at the house Tammy shares with her boyfriend Eric Ray.

Kibby started rifling through the damaged truck and when Tammy challenged him, she says he marched up to her and pushed her to the ground, injuring her elbow. When she got up, he shoved her down again.

Tammy, 55, explained: ‘I was incredibly scared. He has serious issues. I could see it in his eyes, he was crazy,  something really wasn’t right.’

The mother-of-one managed to call the police and Kibby was found hiding in a neighbor’s garden and arrested. He was charged with simple assault and criminal trespass and was facing up to two years in prison.

Tammy, who works as a caterer for a hotel chain, had nightmares about the incident every night for a week. Unfortunately, her memory of exactly what happened became blurred and when it came to telling prosecutors all the details, she couldn’t remember because of the shock.

The assault charge was dropped, and Kibby pleaded guilty to criminal trespass last Wednesday, July 23 at Conway Circuit Court. He was back in the exact same building a week later when he was issued with a $1million bail for allegedly kidnapping Abby.

His court appearance for the trespass incident came just three days after 15-year-old Abby mysteriously returned home to her overjoyed mother Zenya following an agonizing nine-month absence.

And Tammy is convinced he only decided to let her go because he knew he was facing time in jail.

She said: ‘If he had been sentenced to prison time, he would have been taken there straight from the court room. If he was holding Abby, then that would have been a very good reason to let her go.’

Tammy describes Kibby as a ‘bad-tempered bully’ and a number of others who have crossed paths with him over the years are equally critical of the ‘odd-ball loner’, they call, ‘crazy Nate’.

Since he was arrested on Monday and accused of kidnapping Abby back in October, when she was just 14, people in his home town of Gorham, New Hampshire have painted him as an extremely troubled character. Neighbors on the trailer park where he allegedly kept Abby – possibly in a shipping container in his back yard – lined up to give their opinions on him.

Speaking on Tuesday, one neighbor who did not want to be named, described Kibby as a gun nut, who was obsessed with conspiracy theories, hated authority and believed that one day there would be a zombie apocalypse.

Apparently, part of the reason he had built up such a large arsenal of firearms was because he was convinced he would eventually have to use them to fight off the living dead.

The neighbor said: ‘I have known him for years and he was a very odd man. He would always talk to me about zombies and the zombie apocalypse. It was very unnerving. Most people round here avoided Nate.’

Another added: ‘He would say things like, ‘I’ll blow this whole trailer park up without even thinking about it’. That’s why we were surprised about Abby. We expected him to go on a rampage or go crazy with a bomb, not kidnap a child.’

Glen Alden, who lives opposite Kibby in a trailer park in Gorham, New Hampshire does not believe his neighbour was capable of the sickening crime he has been accused of. He said: ‘Nate had a girl in her 20’s who used to come round every weekend, so I don’t see how he could have had Abby in there at the same time, it doesn’t make sense.’

Offer: In this letter to Tammy Shackford's partner, Kibby offers to settle their dispute for $1,000. At the end, he quotes from the Paul Newman movie Cool Hand Luke: 'What we have here is a failure to communicate'

Offer: In this letter to Tammy Shackford’s partner, Kibby offers to settle their dispute for $1,000. At the end, he quotes from the Paul Newman movie Cool Hand Luke: ‘What we have here is a failure to communicate’

But Mr Aden did describe him as, ‘off-kilter’ and says certain things he did set alarm-bells ringing.

One day he saw him walking around his front yard with a pistol tucked into his belt. When he questioned him, he simple told him he liked taking it his work, a metal shop in North Conway.

And disturbingly, he was carrying a gun the day he crashed into Eric Low, in Abby’s home town of North Conway back in February, something he admitted in a letter he wrote to the Sheriff’s department.

Speaking to MailOnline Tammy relived her run-in with Kibby, saying: ‘Eric was about to turn into our local convenience store and Kibby, just drove straight into the back of him.

‘Eric called me and told me his truck was a write off. After about 20 minutes he still wasn’t home, so I decided to drive down there to see if he was OK.

‘Kibby was being incredibly belligerent. He was saying, ‘This is not my first time at the rodeo, I know what to do. He didn’t have insurance and he was saying he would pay there and then.

‘I said, ‘no, that isn’t how this works, you will pay our insurance company. He was arguing, so I said,

‘It’s clear we are not going to be able to have a sensible conversation’.

Busted: Kibby was arrested for criminal trespass, simple assault and prowling last March after the automobile accident with Tammy Shackworth's boyfriend

Bizarre: In his statement to police regarding the auto accident, Kibby writes 'The End...Happily Ever After'

‘He was really upsetting Eric. He was a very passive man, but he loved that truck and he was getting angry. I got a policeman and asked him to remove Kibby from the situation. The officer said to me,

‘No problem, he’s a real piece of work’.

‘We left, but Kibby called up and said he wanted to pay us. By that time we had realized Eric only had liability insurance, so we said, that’s fine, the truck is a write off, so you owe us it’s value, which is $4,500. When he heard that he started screaming and shouting, calling Eric an a**hole and saying the truck was a piece of junk. We hung up and I told Eric not to speak to him again’.

Needless to say, Kibby, gave a different version of events and claimed Eric Ray was the aggressor. In a wordy letter written to the sheriff’s department, he said: ‘I considered informing (Eric Ray) I was armed with a carry pistol, but decided against it. I tried to sympathize with his anger and felt it was best to turn the cheek.’

He also said he wanted the sheriff’s office to investigate because he had no faith in the Conway Police Department, which he branded ‘an immoral organized criminal syndicate.’

Tammy says Kibby continually called Eric over the coming weeks, apparently in an attempt to, ‘push his buttons’, but they chose to ignore him. Then in March, after they had been to the court house to collect the relevant paper work, Kibby called again, asking to come round to their house to discuss things.

They said they were not prepared to meet him on their property, but would see him at a local convenience store at 3pm. Tammy said: ‘He didn’t show, so Eric went to his work, a metal shop, which is just next door. Kibby was getting a ride with a friend and Eric gave him the court papers. He ripped them from Eric’s hand, turned to his friend and said, ‘I told you he was a f*****g piece of work’.

Odd: Said one neighbor, 'I have known him for years and he's a very odd man

Odd: Said one neighbor, ‘I have known him for years and he’s a very odd man

‘Eric left and went to the court to file against him and I went back to Eric’s house.
‘I was inside and I looked out of the window and saw someone walking around the yard. At first I thought it was Eric, but I soon realized it wasn’t and I went out to have a look.

‘Kibby was in the cab of Eric’s truck, rooting around in there. I had the phone in my hand and I shouted, ‘Kibby, leave now, or I’ll call the police’. I started to call them and he approached me with his arms out stretched. He shoved me and I fell back and hit my elbow. I got up and he shoved me down again. I was through to the police now and I was screaming, ‘He’s hurting me, he’s hurting me’. That’s when Kibby turned and bolted.’

Within minutes three squad cars were on the scene and one of them caught him loitering in a neighbor’s garden and arrested him.

Tammy went to hospital and had to pay $500 for treatment on her injured elbow. When Eric and her arrived at court last Wednesday, Kibby was waiting inside the door, leaning up against a wall, smiling at them.

Tammy said: ‘The prosecutor seemed to have had dealings with him before and was determined to get two years on each charge. I was supposed to give evidence on the stand, but when the prosecutor started asking me questions about what happened, it was all blurred in my mind.

‘I was in shock when it happened and for about a week after I had nightmares about it, with a different outcome each time. I could not confidently answer questions, like, which hand did he push me with. I wasn’t prepared to go on the stand unless I was 100 per cent.’

As a result, the assault charge was dropped and Kibby accepted a negotiated plea deal for criminal trespass where he paid a $1,000 fine and agreed not to contact Tammy or Ray.
Tammy said: ‘When I heard about Abby, my first thought was that he let her go because he thought he was going to be sent to jail.

‘I actually considered going to his arraignment, just to look him in the eyes, but I decided against it. If he gets off this, I don’t want him coming after me.’

She added: ‘He is a very strange man. If he did have Abby all this time, I really hope she is OK, because there is something seriously not right about him.’

Investigation: Police searched Kibby's home but have revealed little about what led them to Kibby, but questions now surround a shipping container on the man's Gorham, New Hampshire property, located 30 miles north of where Abigail reappeared last week

Investigation: Police searched Kibby’s home but have revealed little about what led them to Kibby, but questions now surround a shipping container on the man’s Gorham, New Hampshire property, located 30 miles north of where Abigail reappeared last week

That was far from Kibby’s first brush with the law. Court records show he has a lengthy criminal history, spanning back to when he was 17. Charges against him include six criminal trespassing cases, two counts of receiving stolen property, providing false information to purchase a firearm and theft. In October, just days after he allegedly kidnapped Abby, he was arrested in North Conway for procession of marijuana.

Former classmates from Kennett High School, North Conway, which is incidentally the school Abby attends, revealed he was known as an anti-social bully back then.

Randy Waldron said Kibby tormented him for 20 years. He told The Conway Daily Sun: ‘I don’t know Abby Hernandez but I hope and pray this girl recovers from this.

‘This has been a pattern for Nat for 20 years. He was a talented sketch artist who always obsessed about girls with dark hair and drew them with their hands tied behind their backs.

‘I hope Abby gets word that she’s not alone; there are more of us who were tortured by Nat Kibby. I’m really shocked no one could connect this to him sooner.’ He went on to describe how Kibby took him into woods near the school and, ‘beat the crap’ out of him.

The Conway Daily Sun also reported that in 1998 Kibby was found guilty of assaulting 16-year-old Shawna Bova, who was in ninth grade at the time.

He grabbed ‘Bova with his hands, and holding on to her jacket around the neck area preventing her from leaving.’

At the 1998 trial, Bova testified she was walking to the school bus to go home on Jan. 21 when Kibby approached her and asked if he could talk to her. She said no and he grabbed her left arm with one of his hands and asked again if she would take five minutes to talk to him.

She testified that the first time she tried to walk away, he continued to hold onto her arm, stopping her moving forward. The second time she tried to leave, he let go.

According to the paper, while awaiting trial on the assault charge and others, Kibby spent 42 days behind bars, mainly in the psychiatric unit of the state prison because he had threatened to harm himself.
