2013-7-4 marion bartoli celebrates 2

The 15th-seeded Frenchwoman led 3-0 in both sets and took 62 minutes to wrap them up. Flipkens, a Belgian seeded 20th, was in her first major semifinal.

“I was hitting the ball very cleanly from the start, right away,” Bartoli said. “I had some great passing shots and some great lobs. Everything was working so perfectly. To do that in the semifinals of Wimbledon was an amazing feeling.”

Bartoli also reached the final in 2007, losing to Venus Williams in straight sets. She next faces No. 23 Sabine Lisicki of Germanyy, who held off No. 4 Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland 6-4, 2-6, 9-7. Lisicki defeated Serena Williams in the fourth round.

None of the four semifinalists has ever won a Grand Slam title.

Amelie Mauresmo, the 2006 Wimbledon champion whow coaches France’s Fed Cup team, was in the stands for the early match and had plenty of praise for Bartoli.

“She just played a great match, definitely the best match of the tournament for her,” Mauresmo said. “Marion put huge pressure on her right from the beginning, first of all returning very well, serving better, which she had to do today.”

Bartoli was pumped from the start on Centre Court, mixing two-handed backhands and forehands with little hops between points, as she usually does.

In the first set, she faced only one break point, nearly putting Flipkens back on serve in the third game. But despite a double-fault and a backhand into the net to eventually get behind 30-40, Bartoli dug herself out of the hole and finished the game with the first of her five aces.

Flipkens, who again took the court with her right knee taped, called for a trainer after being broken for the second straight time at the start of the second set. The trainer added tape to the knee while Bartoli sat in her chair sipping water.

Whatever she needed, it briefly worked. Flipkens, after the medical timeout, broke for the first and only time, making it 3-1. But a few minutes later Bartoli broke again and held to make it 5-1.

“I think maybe she was a bit injured today,” Bartoli said. “It must be hard for her to be injured in the semifinal of Wimbledon, but she deserved a lot of respect.”

Bartoli is now 2-1 in Grand Slam semifinals with both wins at Wimbledon. Six years ago, she beat another Belgian, top-seeded Justine Henin, in the semifinals. But then she ran into Venus Williams, who that year won the fourth of her five Wimbledon titles.

On Saturday, Bartoli will be on relatively equal footing against another player — either Radwanska or Lisicki — looking for a maiden major title.

“It’s a good opportunity. She has experience at least,” Mauresmo said of Bartoli. “Maybe it’s going to help her for the final.”

The first rhino calf to thrive after being conceived through artificial insemination in North America has been named after the Alabama boy who was rescued from a bunker in February.

The Montgomery Zoo in Alabama announced it named its baby Indian rhino after Ethan Gilman, the 6-year-old who was held against his will by Jimmy Lee Dykes in an underground bunker for nearly a week in Midland City, Ala.

“It was a significant birth to the species of the rhino, and Ethan’s rescue was very significant,” Montgomery Zoo’s deputy director Marcia Woodard told ABCNews.com. “What better way to connect that type of happening with the boy who was held in the bunker and was rescued?”

Woodard said Ethan visited the Montgomery Zoo a few days after his rescue and bonded with the zoo’s female rhino, Jeta, who was pregnant at the time.

“He’s a cute rhino, and it sounds like Ethan is a very cute, special boy,” Dr. Monica Stoops, a Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden scientist, who worked with the Montgomery Zoo to facilitate the artificial insemination of the rhinos.

Ethan, the rhino calf, was born at the Montgomery Zoo in Alabama on June 5, weighing 90 pounds.

At two weeks old, Ethan already weighed in at 181 pounds. Stoops said he would reach mature weight by 8 years old, topping the scale at approximately 3,800 pounds.

Stoops said the zoos have started used artificial insemination for rhino breeding because the species tends to be naturally aggressive with courtship behavior, which can lead to injuries or death in some rhinos.

There are less than 2,500 Indian rhinos in the wild, and only 60 in captivity in North America, Stoops said.

James Gandolfini, the actor who most famously portrayed Tony Soprano on the series “The Sopranos,” has died in Italy at age 51.

“It is with immense sorrow that we report our client James Gandolfini passed away today while on holiday in Rome, Italy,” said his managers, Mark Armstrong and Nancy Sanders. “Our hearts are shattered and we will miss him deeply. He and his family were part of our family for many years and we are all grieving.”

Though he rose to his greatest fame playing a New Jersey mob boss on “The Sopranos,” Gandolfini also had a long and diverse list of credits as a stage and film actor, including many character and supporting roles.

“He was a genius. Anyone who saw him even in the smallest of his performances knows that,” “Sopranos” creator David Chase said in a prepared statement this evening. “He is one of the greatest actors of this or any time. A great deal of that genius resided in those sad eyes. I remember telling him many times, ‘You don’t get it. You’re like Mozart.’ There would be silence at the other end of the phone. … He wasn’t easy sometimes. But he was my partner, he was my brother in ways I can’t explain and never will be able to explain.”

After “The Sopranos” ended its run in 2007, Gandolfini received a Tony nomination starring in the Broadway hit, “God of Carnage,” described in a 2009 New York Times article as a “satiric comedy.”

Gandolfini told The Times in 2009 that he had been looking for an acting change of pace.

“I love hearing people laugh,” he told the interviewer. “Especially in New York, and especially now. To hear somebody out there just belly-laughing.”

Recent film roles included his portrayal of CIA Director Leon Panetta in “Zero Dark Thirty” — and he also appeared in “Killing Them Softly” and “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone,” and reunited with Chase to play the father of an aspiring musician in the film, “Not Fade Away.”

HBO, which broadcast “The Sopranos,” said in a prepared statement, “We’re all in shock and feeling immeasurable sadness at the loss of a beloved member of our family. He was special man, a great talent, but more importantly a gentle and loving person who treated everyone no matter their title or position with equal respect. He touched so many of us over the years with his humor, his warmth and his humility. Our hearts go out to his wife and children during this terrible time. He will be deeply missed by all of us.”

Born on Sept. 18, 1961 in Westwood, N.J., Gandolfini cultivated an interest in theater while he was still in high school, and then went on to study communications at Rutgers University.

There, he met celebrity chef Mario Batali, who became a lifelong friend.

“I am totally shocked and devastated by the passing of one of my oldest and dearest friends,” Batali told ABC News. “I only hope to help his family any way I can in their grief and mourning.”

Gandolfini is survived by his wife, Deborah Lin, his daughter Liliana, 8 months, and his son, Michael, from a previous marriage.

After getting his start in the 1987 film “Shock! Shock! Shock!” Gandolfini went on to play a Virgil, a mob-enforcer in “True Romance” in 1993 and a lovable bodyguard in “Get Shorty,” before landing the role of a lifetime, Tony Soprano, a few years later.

“I have lost a brother and a best friend,” tweeted Steven Van Zandt, who co-starred with Gandolfini on “The Sopranos.” “The world has lost one of the greatest actors of all time.”

“Jimmy was a dear friend and like a brother to me. He was a great actor and a great father,” said one of his “Sopranos” co-stars, Steve Schirripa. “I will miss him terribly. I am very sad.”

HE’S just 11 but Angus King is travelling interstate to follow his dream of becoming an Olympic boxer. That’s because NSW bans boxing until age 14 – in all other states you can fight competitively from age 10.

Angus will head to Brisbane this weekend to fight in the 42kg division against an opponent of his own age, experience and weight over three 90-second rounds.

The Elanora Heights Primary School student has had two years of preparation and training. “I’ve been looking forward to this for a long time,” Angus said. “My major goal is to go to the Olympics.”

Trainer Tom Lambert said he would not let Angus step into the ring to fight unless he was confident he was up to it. “I have been testing him out the last couple of months … and it has proved my gut feeling that he is more than ready,” he told the Manly Daily.

His mother Rachel is supportive, and dad Josh will be ringside on Saturday. “I’m happy for him and nervous for him as well,” Rachel said. “I wouldn’t allow it if I didn’t have complete faith in Tom. I know he wouldn’t let him box if wasn’t ready.

“Angus loves it, it is four nights a week he trains and he never complains.”

Boxing Australia NSW president Barry McDonald said the state government raised the age limit for boxers from 10 to 14 about a decade ago – and his organisation has been trying to get it lowered back to 10 ever since.

Talk about above and beyond the call of duty.

A heroic New York City dispatcher spent a marathon eight hours on the phone with a stroke victim as rescuers attempted to locate her.

A story in the New York Post reports that EMT dispatcher Joann Hilman-Payne got a call from an ill Mary Thomas, and rescuers rushed to the woman’s residence at East 71st Street. But the stroke victim was not there.

According to a letter of commendation written by EMT Capt. Philip Weiss praising Hilman-Payne, the dispatcher then struggled to communicate with the slurring Thomas to try to determine her location—and keep her conscious.

With the help of Verizon and the NYPD, firefighters checked several nearby addresses, but none proved to be right. Rescuers finally found Thomas at an East 72nd Street residence, where she had been working as a housekeeper.

She was rushed to Lenox Hill Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit, according to the Post.

“Throughout the entirety, [Hilman-Payne] worked to keep the patient awake, she never lost her own composure and remained calm while attempting to elicit more information from the patient,” Weiss wrote.

He added, “I have no doubt that without the efforts of all involved [Thomas’] outcome would not have been positive.”

numerology for Sy Perlis

Sunday June 16, 2013             8:56 pm

Comeback stories are common in the world of sports. We hear about players coming back from torn ACLs, broken bones and even personal trauma.

Rarely, however, do we hear about an athlete returning from pacemaker surgery.

That’s what 91-year-old Sy Perlis overcame to set a new world record in the 90-and-over weightlifting class. The Surprise, Ariz., native recently competed at the National Push-Pull Bench Press and Dead Lift Championships, and his final hoist of 187.5-pounds was good for the record books.

Perlis, a World War II veteran who didn’t start lifting until he was 60, dominated the 85-to-90 age group before transitioning into the 90-and-over class. He had to sit out last year after surgery to fix a hernia and implant a pacemaker. Now he works out five days a week.

“It gave me the opportunity to do something to test myself for one thing, and I didn’t have to run around to do it, as you would in some other sports,”  “I got a lot of satisfaction out of it, and it made me feel good, and it was good for me.”

Perlis’ hobby hasn’t just been beneficial for him, it’s also motivated his wife.

“I always say if it weren’t for my husband, I’d be at home watching TV and eating bonbons,” Joan Perlis, 69. “He’s my motivator. He makes me work out, too.”

The full details are in on Tim Tebow’s contract with the New England Patriots and, while the base salaries are the league minimum over the next two seasons and there’s no guaranteed money, there is a chance to make some decent cash in 2014 — presumably at a position other than quarterback.

Tebow can earn up to $2 million in playing-time incentives in 2014, according to a person who has reviewed the details of the contract.

The person, who spoke to USA TODAY Sports on condition of anonymity because the financial terms weren’t to be disseminated publicly, said Tebow will earn the full $2 million only if he’s on the field for 80% of the offensive snaps and the Patriots win 10 games or make the postseason.

Tebow will earn $500,000 if he participates in 60% of the plays in 2014, $1 million for 70% or $1.5 million for 80% of the plays without reaching the playoffs or winning 10 games.

Assuming Tom Brady stays healthy, Tebow’s best chance at hitting those incentives would be his playing somewhere other than quarterback. There are no playing time incentives this year for Tebow, meaning he’ll earn the same amount as a backup quarterback than he would earn as a contributor elsewhere.

Tebow is scheduled to earn a base salary of $630,000 this season. That salary has a “split” rate of $358,000 if he lands on injured reserve, meaning he’ll be paid the lower rate for all weeks he’s on IR. Tebow’s 2014 base salary is $730,000, with a split rate of $398,000.

Including the $25,000 workout bonus next year, the maximum value of the contract is $3.385 million over two years. The base value (minus incentives) is $1.385 million.

And again, the minimum value if he’s released before making the 53-man roster this year is $0.

As the sound of thunder echoed outside United Center, the Blackhawks and the Bruins, with a combined 175 years of history, faced off for the first time in the Stanley Cup finals.

Game 1 proved to be a match for the ages. Beginning on Wednesday night, the contest did not end until 1 a.m. Eastern on Thursday, when a shot by the Blackhawks’ Michal Rozsival was deflected first by the stick of Dave Bolland, then by the knee of Andrew Shaw, and sailed past Boston goalie Tuukka Rask at 12 minutes 8 seconds of the third overtime period. Shaw’s goal gave Chicago a 4-3 victory.

It was the longest game of the 2013 season, and the fifth-longest game in Stanley Cup finals history. The game’s time of 112:08 fell just short of the 113:50 of Game 3 of the 1931 finals, when the Blackhawks beat the Montreal Canadiens, 2-1.

“I just got lucky, and it went in,” Shaw said after the marathon ended, and the Blackhawks completed a comeback from a 3-1 third-period deficit. Shaw is best known for being a pest and an agitator. But in these playoffs he has 5 goals and 4 assists in 18 games.

The Blackhawks and the Bruins will now recuperate before meeting again here on Saturday night.

Joel Quenneville, the Chicago coach, pointed out that the teams played almost two full games, and the statistics showed it. Rask stopped 59 of 63 shots, and Blackhawks goalie Corey Crawford turned aside 51 of 54 shots. In all, the Blackhawks attempted 132 shots to Boston’s 85.

The Bruins blocked 40 Chicago shots, led by defenseman Dennis Seidenberg, with 9, and Andrew Ference, with 8. Ference had a game-high 10 hits, while three Blackhawks had nine apiece. Chicago defenseman Duncan Keith led all skaters with 48:40 of ice time, and Seidenberg was next at 48:36.

Chicago forward Marian Hossa led all shooters with 10 shots on goal, followed by the Chicago rookie Brandon Saad, who had nine. The teams took 114 face-offs, with the Bruins winning 58 and the Blackhawks winning 56. The exhausted Blackhawks took two penalties during overtime for too many men on the ice.

“Obviously that kind of thing is going to set in — that’s the reality,” said the Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews, who had 52 shifts. “Both teams are just kicking, trying to survive. Every time you go back on the ice, you try and get that feeling that it’s going to be that one chance that makes the difference.”

In the second extra period, each weary team took 10 shots. With 53 seconds left in the session, the Blackhawks took their second too-many-men-on-the-ice overtime penalty. The 6-foot-9 defenseman Zdeno Chara took a blast from inside the blue line with 10 seconds remaining, and the puck deflected off Jaromir Jagr and slammed inside the goal post behind Corey Crawford and skittered across the crease.

The Bruins sustained a blow during the first overtime when wing Nathan Horton left the game with a shoulder injury, which many have speculated he has been playing with in the playoffs. Horton is the N.H.L.’s postseason plus-minus leader with a plus-22 mark.

Bruins Coach Claude Julien said it was too soon to characterize the extent of Horton’s injury. But he said he was not upset by the defeat.

“It could have gone either way,” he said. “With a little bit of luck, we could have ended it before they did. But that’s the name of the game.”

In the second overtime period, Bruins forward Kaspars Daugavins almost won the game, but his shot at an open net was thwarted by Blackhawks defenseman Johnny Oduya.

“I missed my shot,” Daugavins said after the game, nearly distraught. “It hurts.”

Well into the third period, it looked as if the Bruins would run away with the game. Milan Lucic staked Boston to a 2-0 lead with goals in the first and second periods. Saad halved the Blackhawks’ deficit soon after Lucic’s second goal. But Patrice Bergeron made the score 3-1 with a power-play goal at 6:09 of the third period.

Yet the Blackhawks kept pressing and rallied. They pulled to 3-2 when Bolland scored at the eight-minute mark, and Oduya tied the score at 12:14 when his long slap shot deflected off the skate of Ference and into the Boston net.

With the third goal, the Blackhawks had beaten Rask one more time than the Pittsburgh Penguins had over the four games of the Eastern Conference finals.

As the two Original Six teams met, memories of Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita, Bobby Orr and Phil and Tony Esposito filled the air. Outside, a heavy Midwestern storm produced a loud thunderclap that startled fans inside the building.

The Bruins killed off three penalties, including a two-man advantage for 1:17 during the second period. They have now killed off 19 straight penalties, dating to Game 5 of the second round against the Rangers.

Map showing fires in the Amazon forest between 1999 and 2010

Researchers for the first time mapped the extent and frequency of understory fires across a study area (green) spanning 1.2 million square miles (3 million square kilometers) in the southern Amazon forest. Fires were widespread across the forest frontier during the study period from 1999-2010. Recurrent fires, however, are concentrated in areas favored by the confluence of climate conditions suitable for burning and ignition sources from humans

June 07, 2013

Using an innovative satellite technique, NASA scientists have determined that a previously unmapped type of wildfire in the Amazon rainforest is responsible for destroying several times more forest than has been lost through deforestation in recent years.

In the southern Amazon rainforest, fires below the forest treetops, or “understory fires,” have been hidden from view from NASA satellites that detect actively burning fires. The new method has now led to the first regional estimate of understory fire damages across the southern Amazon.

“Amazon forests are quite vulnerable to fire, given the frequency of ignitions for deforestation and land management at the forest frontier, but we’ve never known the regional extent or frequency of these understory fires,” said Doug Morton of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., and the study’s lead author. The study was published April 22 in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B.

In years with the most understory fire activity, such as 2005, 2007 and 2010, the area of forest affected by understory fires was several times greater than the area of deforestation for expansion of agriculture, according to Morton. The study goes further and fingers climate conditions – not deforestation – as the most important factor in determining fire risk in the Amazon at a regional scale.

Uncovering the Story Behind Understory Fires

Fires in the Amazon’s savanna areas can burn quickly, spreading up to 330 feet (100 meters) per minute. Grasses and shrubs in these ecosystems typically survive low-intensity surface fires.

In contrast, understory fires at the frontier and beyond appear “unremarkable when you see them burning,” Morton said. Flames reach on average only a few feet high, visible from the air as ribbons of smoke that escape through the canopy. They may burn for weeks at a time, spreading only a few feet (0.5 meters) per minute.

Understory fires, however, can damage large areas because Amazon trees are not adapted to fire. The long, slow burn gives way to a creeping death that claims anywhere from 10 to 50 percent of the burn area’s trees. Recovery is also a long and slow, but observable, process.

To identify understory fires, Morton and colleagues used observations from early in the dry season, from June to August, collected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer, or MODIS, instrument on NASA’s Terra satellite. They tracked the timing of fire damage and recovery, which varies depending on the type of forest disturbance. Areas of deforestation, for example, show up in satellite imagery as land that continues to lack signs of recovery for at least two consecutive years. Conversely, signs of forest degradation from understory fires, visible in the year after the burn, dissipate quickly as the forest regrows. This pattern of damage and recovery over multiple years provides a fingerprint of understory fire damages in Amazon forests.

The study shows that between 1999 and 2010, understory forest fires burned more than 33,000 square miles (85,500 square kilometers), or 2.8 percent of the forest. Results also show no correlation between understory fires and deforestation. As the pressure for clearing led to the highest deforestation rates ever seen from 2003 to 2004, adjacent forests had some of the lowest rates of fires.

“You would think that deforestation activity would significantly increase the risk of fires in the adjacent forested area because deforestation fires are massive, towering infernos,” Morton said. “You make a bonfire that is a square kilometer in size, throwing ash and live cinders and preheating the adjacent forest. Why didn’t we have more understory fires in 2003 and 2004, when deforestation rates were so high?”

The researchers point to climate as the reason that fire-driven deforestation didn’t burn more surrounding forests in these years. Frequent understory fire activity coincides with low nighttime humidity, as measured by the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) instrument aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite. Scientists say the connection points to a strong climate control on Amazon fires.

“You can look within an indigenous reserve where there is no deforestation and see enormous understory fires,” Morton said. “The human presence at the deforestation frontier leads to a risk of forest fires when climate conditions are suitable for burning, with or without deforestation activity.”

Ignition could come from cooking, camping, cigarettes, cars, agricultural waste burning or any number of human sources.

The new knowledge about the scope of understory fires could have implications for estimates of carbon emissions from disturbed forests. How experts account for those emissions depends on the fate of the forest – how it is disturbed and how it recovers.

“We don’t yet have a robust estimate of what the net carbon emissions are from understory fires, but widespread damages suggest that they are important source of emissions that we need to consider,” Morton said.

For now, scientists are looking into the climate mechanisms that, given an ignition source from humans, predispose the southern Amazon to burn.

Soil Moisture as a Fire Indicator

Already, scientists at the University of California, Irvine, have delved deeper into the climate-fire connection. New research shows that satellite-based measurements of the region’s soil moisture could supplement and sharpen fire season forecasts across the southern Amazon.

The first forecast in 2012 and new forecast for 2013, led by Jim Randerson at UC Irvine, are based on a model that primarily considers historical fire data from MODIS instruments along with sea surface temperature data from NOAA. Previous research has shown sea surface temperature to be a good indicator of the pending Amazon fire season severity.

Now, scientists are interested in fine-tuning the model across smaller geographic regions and finer timescales. Toward that goal, Yang Chen of UC Irvine and colleagues show that water storage estimates from NASA’s Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment, or GRACE, satellites allow monitoring of the evolution of dry conditions during the fire season.

Transpiration and evaporation are two ways that water is transported from the ground to the atmosphere. Low water storage in the soil leads to a drier near-ground atmosphere. The result is drier, more flammable vegetation alongside increases in plant litter and fuel availability. Chen’s research was published online April 11 in the American Geophysical Union’s Journal of Geophysical Research – Biogeosciences.

“A severe fire season in the Amazon is often preceded by low water storage in the soil, and this water deficit in the soil can be detected by the satellites several months before the fire season,” Chen said.

Soil water storage in the southern Amazon in June is a key indicator of fire season severity. “The GRACE measurements provide unique and precise information about land water storage that changes completely the way we can look at fire prediction,” said Isabella Velicogna of UC Irvine and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., who lead the GRACE analysis.

While the water storage estimates are not yet officially part of Randerson and colleagues’ forecasts, the study “charts the course forward to leverage GRACE data for operational purposes,” Morton said. “The ability to integrate observations from many different NASA instruments is really a hallmark of Earth system science. In this case, the science also has important, practical applications to mitigating the impacts of fires on the Amazon region and global climate.”

Scouting report from Baseball America:

Gray’s metamorphosis from a live-armed but chubby high schooler to a potential No. 1 overall choice is reminiscent of Stephen Strasburg‘s. Gray has firmed up his frame to a solid 6-foot-4 and 239 pounds, and he has his delivery and his pitches more under control than ever. He has maintained a high level of performance all spring, carrying an 8-1, 1.20 record with a 104-16 K-BB ratio and a .166 opponent average through his first 12 starts. If the Astros pass on Gray with the No. 1 selection, it will be an upset if he gets past the Cubs at No. 2.

The winner of the single largest lottery jackpot in U.S. history has finally come forward to claim the $590million prize.

The Florida Lottery will announce the winner’s name at a press conference this afternoon – as required by law – though the winner will not be present.

The jackpot winner has managed to keep his or her identity secret until today – even through the ticket was sold in Zephyrhills, a tight-knit central Florida town where most year-round residents know each others’ names.

Florida Lottery officials told NBC News that the winner is a woman in her 70s who lives in Zephyhills.

Buzz: News of the winning ticket being sold in Zephyhills, Florida, brought international attention to the small cityBuzz: News of the winning ticket being sold in Zephyhills, Florida, brought international attention to the small city

The May 18 drawing resulted in the largest single-ticket winner in U.S. history.

One previous lottery jackpot was larger than the $590million sum – a $656million MegaMillions drawing last March – though three tickets matched the winning numbers and had to split the prize.

The lucky Powerball ticket was purchased at a Publix supermarket in Zephyhills.

Residents told MailOnline that the winner took the ticket back to Publix the next day to confirm that the numbers matched the winning drawing.

The winner then left town and has not been heard from since.

‘Being in a small town, everybody knows everybody and in some cases, everybody’s business,’ Dave Walters, a reporter with a local newspaper, told the Associated Press. ‘It’s hard to keep a secret in this town, but this is one of the biggest mysteries we’ve had in a long, long time.

BREAKING THE BANK: TOP 10 LOTTO PAYOUTS OF ALL TIME

  • $656.0 million, Mega Millions, March 30, 2012 (3 tickets from Kansas, Illinois and Maryland)
  • $590 million, Powerball, May 18, 2013 (1 ticket from Florida)
  • $587.5 million, Powerball, Nov. 28, 2012 (2 tickets from Arizona and Missouri)
  • $390.0 million, Mega Millions, March 6, 2007 (2 tickets from Georgia and New Jersey)
  • $380.0 million, Mega Millions, Jan. 4, 2011 (2 tickets from Idaho and Washington)
  • $365.0 million, Powerball, Feb. 18, 2006 (1 ticket from Nebraska)
  • $363.0 million, The Big Game, May 9, 2000 (2 tickets from Illinois and Michigan)
  • $340.0 million, Powerball, Oct. 19, 2005 (1 ticket from Oregon)
  • $338.3 million, Powerball, March 23, 2013 (1 ticket from New Jersey)
  • $337.0 million, Powerball, Aug. 15, 2012 (1 ticket from Michigan)

Only one ticket from Powerball drawing matched the numbers 10, 13, 14, 22 and 52, with a Powerball of 11. The chances of winning were astronomically low: 1 in 175.2 million.

The jackpot, if taken as a lump sum, will result in a $270million payday after taxes.

Speculation in Zephyrhills reached feverish levels of speculation weeks ago as the residents hoped to discover who among them had become the nations latest multi-millionaire.

It appears now that whoever it values privacy.

Resident Gary Cooper, a transplant from New York, told MailOnline that news of the lottery win is the biggest news the city of 13,000 has seen in the two decades he has lived there.

‘Everybody’s talking about it. It’s a small town, you know? Everybody knows everybody and everybody wants to know who it is,’ he said.

The winner had to travel 250 miles north to Florida Lottery headquarters in the state capital of Tallahassee to claim the ticket. She had 60 days to make the claim.

Zephyrhills is a small city in Pasco County, about 30 miles northeast of downtown Tampa. Once a rural farming town, it’s now known as a hotbed for skydiving activity, and the home to large retiree mobile home parks and the water bottled from the natural springs that surround the area.

As news filtered through the town that the winner of the half-billion dollar jackpot hailed from Zephyrhills television crews descended.

Before the draw the promise of the largest draw in the game’s history had lines of people trying to buy last-minute tickets in all of the 43 states and in Washington DC and U.S. Virgin Islands.

At a mini market in Los Angeles’s Chinatown, on Saturday, employees had to create two lines – one for Powerball customers and one for everybody else.

Stewart Fleming in Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham, Kent, with a virus which caused his organs to fail

16:26 EST             2 June 2013

The picture Sarah Fleming took of her husband Stewart is one that will haunt her for ever.

Taken on her mobile phone, it shows him sitting in a hospital cubicle, a hand clutching his stomach, his face a vivid reflection of the agony he was in, as he waited to be seen by doctors.

Tragically, that picture is a heartrending reminder of the circumstances leading up to the railway signalman’s death. It is also a vivid illustration of the turmoil unfolding in overstretched hospital emergency departments.

For the father-of-two, 37, from Rainham, in Kent, had to endure a six–hour wait to see a doctor in A&E at Gillingham’s Medway Maritime Hospital. He had a letter from his GP asking him to be admitted immediately.

He had been to see his GP that day because the antibiotics he had been taking for flu-like systems had failed to work. He was referred straight to hospital. But when he arrived, on December 15, 2008, the hospital was facing an unusually busy period. Staff sickness, a cold weather snap and an increase in GP referrals meant the hospital was under pressure.

He was admitted at 5.30pm, but was not seen until 11.15pm. By then, the mystery virus Stewart had contracted was attacking his heart, kidneys and liver. Despite being transferred to London’s Harefield Hospital, where he was placed into a drug-induced coma, he died on December 27.

Following his death, Stewart’s devastated wife said she could not understand why the ‘fantastic father’ had not been seen immediately. ‘He could have had all those hours on a monitor and they might have been able to stop the virus.’

Following the death, Andrew Horne, chief executive of Medway NHS Foundation Trust, admitted Stewart had waited too long to see a doctor. ‘That evening was very busy, the hospital was full,’ he said.

WAITING SO LONG IT COULD HAVE CAUSED DVT

She was a frail woman who deserved to be treated with dignity and kindness. Instead, Ethel Martin, 91, died after developing deep vein thrombosis having spent 16 hours on a trolley at Manchester Royal Infirmary.

The great-grandmother was admitted to hospital on April 17, 2006, complaining of feeling breathless. Her family were with her when she was put in a curtained-off bay in the overstretched A&E department — the hospital saw 365 patients in A&E that day — at about 5pm.

They returned home in the early hours, assuming she would be cared for, but were shocked when they came back the next day at 9am and found her in the same position. She hadn’t slept because the trolley was so uncomfortable.

After Mrs Martin, of Chorlton, Greater Manchester, was found a bed, her condition deteriorated and she was diagnosed with DVT. She was treated with blood-thinning drugs but died on May 1, following a cardiac arrest.

At an inquest into her death, pathologist Dr Richard Fitzmaurice said lying on her trolley could have contributed to her death. ‘Immobility is a recognised factor in the build-up of deep vein thrombosis.’

A coroner recorded a verdict of misadventure, on the grounds Mrs Martin’s death was the unintended consequence of medical treatment.

A&E was said to have been experiencing ‘severe capacity’ problems that day and with in-patient beds full, the hospital adjusted its status from amber to red, to reflect its packed capacity.

This was of little solace to Mrs Martin’s daughter Pam Salts, who said of her previously active mother: ‘If she had gone into another hospital, maybe she would have lived.’

FAILED THE FIRST TIME SHE NEEDED THE NHS

June Harriman was forced to endure a nine-hour wait at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire — despite a triage nurse suspecting she had suffered a stroke.

The 52-year-old chambermaid, who lived with her husband William in  Newcastle, Staffordshire, had to wait for six agonising hours in the waiting room — where she was slumped in her seat and needed help going to the toilet — before spending a further three hours in a cubicle waiting to be seen by a doctor in January 2009.

Minutes later the mother, who had been complaining of severe headaches and loss of balance, suffered a fit and a scan revealed a large growth on her brain. She died two days later, on January 10, from a brain aneurysm.

Mrs Harriman’s family reached an out-of-court settlement with the trust in June 2011 after hospital officials admitted her treatment fell short of acceptable standards. It said it had been under ‘sustained pressure’ with very high numbers of patients through A&E.

Daughter Sharon Whiston, who was with her mum at hospital, said they had been told to ‘wait like everyone else’. ‘It was the first time she’d needed to use the NHS and they let her down in the worst possible way.’

MY POOR MUM, 95, ON TROLLEY FOR 36 HOURS

Frail and wheelchair-bound, Margaret Hancock endured 36 hours on a trolley at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire.

The great-great-grandmother was taken to hospital by ambulance on August 8, 2010, after becoming increasingly unwell, suffering from diarrhoea. But it was more than four hours before the pensioner, who worked in a munitions factory during World War II, was seen by a doctor, and not until 12 hours later that she was put on a drip.

That night the retired publican’s family, who had been keeping a bedside vigil, kissed Margaret goodnight before leaving her in a side room. They were devastated to receive a phone call the following morning, telling them she had died without leaving A&E.

A post-mortem showed she died after a gallstone blocked her bile duct, causing an infection and painful inflammation. At an inquest into her death, daughter June Gill said A&E had been ‘terrifying’. ‘There were drunks with injuries shouting at her and banging on doors and walls.

‘My poor mum was still stuck on a trolley, waiting. I had an old woman begging me to take her home and now I wish I had. I felt the staff felt she’d had her life and that’s it.’

Coroner Ian Smith said: ‘Just because you’re 95 doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be treated with care and dignity.

IT WAS LIKE PICCADILLY CIRCUS IN THERE

On the morning her husband Paul was taken to Stoke Mandeville Hospital, in Buckinghamshire, Lyn Ryan had read an article in her local newspaper about long waiting times in A&E. So as she prepared to accompany her husband there because of health issues relating to the debilitating effects of peripheral vascular disease, she even joked they would have to be prepared for a wait.

In fact, after arriving at the busy hospital, Paul Ryan, 72, who had already had one leg amputated seven years ago, had to wait nine hours in A&E to see a surgical registrar,  who confirmed he would need an operation to remove his remaining leg.

‘It was like Piccadilly Circus at Stoke Mandeville; people everywhere not being dealt with,’ said Mrs Ryan. ‘The staff are fantastic, but just cannot cope with demand.’

The couple, from Widmer End, were sent home and told they would be called three days later. The call never came, and as Paul’s condition worsened, Mrs Ryan dialled 999. Tragically, after a two-hour wait, he died on the way to hospital in January this year.

One Houston firefighter remained hospitalized in critical condition Saturday, a day after a massive motel and restaurant fire killed four of his fellow firefighters.

A total of 14 were hospitalized Friday afternoon. Houston Fire Department spokesman Jay Evans said Saturday that other injured firefighters had been released over night, but he did not have a precise count.

Among the four killed were veterans of the department and a newcomer just a month out of the academy.

The fire broke out at a restaurant connected to the Southwest Inn along a busy freeway, and was the deadliest in the 118-year history of the department. Three firefighters died at the scene, while the fourth died at a hospital, according to the mayor’s office and a medical examiner.

One of the dead is 29-year-old Robert Garner. His father, Jerry Veuleman, told the Houston Chronicle ( http://bit.ly/1aMsrEe) that Garner was proud of his work and had set his sights on becoming a firefighter after leaving the military. He joined the department in 2010.

“‘Use your training. Don’t be a hero. God will look after you,’ ” Veuleman recalled telling him. “God chose it was time to take Robert and the other firefighters. We are sorry, but we are also blessed.”

The others who died were: 35-year-old Capt. Matthew Renaud, an 11-year veteran of the department; 41-year-old Robert Bebee, who joined almost 12 years ago; and 24-year-old rookie firefighter Anne Sullivan. She had graduated from the training academy in April.

Fire officials said they took a high risk in aggressively fighting the fire because they believed people were inside the motel. When a portion of the building collapsed, the firefighters were trapped.

In 1953 and 2000, two Houston firefighters were killed in a single fire. Three firefighters died in 1929 when a train slammed broadside into their engine.

If Sarah Murnaghan were 12 years old, she would be at the top of the adult lung transplant list because she only has weeks to live and a lung transplant would as-good-as cure her of cystic fibrosis.

But she’s not 12, and if she doesn’t get new lungs, she might not even make it to 11.

“We are not asking for preference for Sarah, we are asking for equality,” Sarah’s mother, Janet Murnaghan, said in a press release. “We strongly believe Sarah should be triaged based on the severity of her illness, not her age.”

The Murnaghan family of Newtown Square, Pa., is fighting a little known organ transplant policy that is effectively pushing 10-year-old Sarah to the bottom of the adult transplant waiting list because it mandates that adult lungs be offered to all adult patients before they can be offered to someone under 12 years old.

Sarah has been on the pediatric waiting list for new lungs for 18 months, but since there are so few pediatric organ donors, there hasn’t been a match. She’s been living at Philadelphia Children’s Hospital for two months connected to a machine to help her breath, Sarah’s aunt, Sharon Ruddock, told ABCNews.com.

There were only 11 lung donors between 6 and 10 years old and only two lung transplants in that age group in 2012, according to an Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network statement. However, since Sarah was eligible for an adult lung transplant, her family was both horrified and excited when her condition rapidly deteriorated earlier this month because they thought it meant she would get bumped to the top of the adult waiting list, Ruddock said.

“A week went by with nothing, no offers,” Ruddock said. “They said, ‘Well, you’re not at the front of the line. It goes to all adults, and if all the adults turn them down, the lungs go to the kids.'”

Patients with cystic fibrosis, a genetic condition that damages the lungs, have an average life expectancy of 31 years old, said Dr. Devang Doshi, a pediatric lung specialist at Beaumont Children’s Hospital in Michigan who has not met Sarah. But if they get a lung transplant, the condition is essentially cured.

“It’s a very disheartening thing to hear and read about because you’ve got a child in desperate need of a transplant to survive … and people less qualified in terms of severity are able to get that organ instead of this child because of what’s in place,” Doshi said. “From a medical standpoint, we look at these types of hurdles and obstacles and sometimes get frustrated with the system.”

So Sarah’s family started an online petition at change.org to persuade the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network to change its policy. So far, they’ve gathered about 40,000 signatures.

The organization, which falls under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, responded on Monday that it can’t make an exception for Sarah.

“OPTN cannot create a policy exemption on behalf of an individual patient, since giving an advantage to one patient may unduly disadvantage others,” the statement read.

Doshi said he thinks children under 12 years old should be considered with the adult patients and awarded organs based on how severe their conditions are. Adult lungs may not perfectly fit child patients, but they can be used to save multiple children. One of his 6-year-old patients’ got a partial lung donation from her mother several years ago in a last ditch effort to save her life.

John Q. Hammons, a prominent hotel developer and southwest Missouri philanthropist who rose from a poor Depression-era childhood to build a national real estate empire, has died. He was 94.

Hammons, who actively led his company well into his 80s, died peacefully Sunday at a nursing home in Springfield, said Sheri Davidson Smith, a spokeswoman for John Q. Hammons Hotels & Resorts.

Hammons’ first business — a company that sold mortar-less bricks — went bust in the late 1940s, saddling him with debt. He paid off that debt after two years and recovered to build housing subdivisions in southwest Missouri over the next decade before purchasing 10 Holiday Inn franchises with a partner in 1958 from the company’s founder.

He went on to build 200 hotels nationwide, including Embassy Suites, Marriotts, Radissons and Holiday Inns. Hammons also developed an expansive real estate portfolio associated with those hotels of golf courses, restaurants, convention centers, a casino and riverboat gambling. He avoided big-city locations in favor of properties in college towns and state capitals.

“He would say, ‘The kids will always go to school, and you can’t fire the damn politicians,'” former company executive Scott Tarwater said in a March 2011 interview.

Along the way he donated millions of dollars to local hospitals, colleges and public television. His name graces so many buildings and streets in Springfield — from the basketball arena at Missouri State University to the city’s tallest building — that comedian Bob Hope once joked that the city should change its name to “Hammonsville.”

He regularly appeared on Forbes magazine’s list of the wealthiest Americans and estimated his personal wealth several years ago at $1 billion. He took his company public in 1994 before returning it to private ownership a decade later. During his career, according to the company, Hammons developed 210 hotel properties in 40 states.

“He has made such a major, significant difference to this community,” Jim Anderson, president of the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce, said in a 2007 interview. “Some people may not see the way he has put us on the map.”

But Hammons’ recent years were shrouded in secrecy and controversy.

In March 2011, a group of friends asked Greene County probate court to appoint Hammons a public guardian. The friends’ lawsuit said they weren’t being allowed to visit him at a Springfield nursing home or even talk to him on the phone after Jacqueline Dowdy, whom Hammons gave power of attorney several years ago, took control of the John Q. Hammons Hotels & Resorts in October 2010, purged most of its top officials and placed Hammons in “involuntary seclusion.”

The court appointed a Springfield doctor in May 2011 to serve as Hammons’ temporary guardian. The doctor allowed supervised visits with Hammons, though that didn’t alleviate the feud. Dowdy, a former administrative assistant and accountant, became CEO after nearly 40 years of working alongside Hammons.

On Monday, Dowdy praised Hammons in a company statement for his both his professional and philanthropic work.

“Hammons was a giant in the hospitality industry and was unwavering in his commitment to exceptional quality and service and to giving back to the community,” she said. “He was a great mentor and friend and will be missed by all who came to know him, but his legacy will live on forever.”

Alan O’Day, who crafted popular songs for artists like the Righteous Brothers and Helen Reddy before scoring a No. 1 of his own with the bouncy 1977 hit “Undercover Angel,” lost his battle with cancer on Friday, his record label announced. He was 72.

The songwriter, producer and artist died at his home in Westwood, Calif. surrounded by family and friends.

“Alan continued to write and perform until his last days,” a statement from 1st Phase Records reads. “Alan was a generous man who gave his heart and soul to the music industry.”

O’Day signed with Warner Bros. in 1971, later writing “Train of Thought” for Cher, “Rock and Roll Heaven” for the Righteous Brothers, and the 1974 No. 1 “Angie Baby” by Helen Reddy. Three years later he landed at the top of the Hot 100 with his own single, “Undercover Angel.”

In the 1980s, O’Day teamed up with Janis Liebhart to co-write dozens of songs for the popular “Muppet Babies” cartoons.

Throughout his career, O’Day’s songs were performed by artists ranging from Johnny Mathis, the 5th Dimension, Tom Jones, Dusty Springfield, Tony Orlando, Three Dog Night and Paul Anka, among others.

O’Day is survived by his wife, Yuka. Funeral services are pending.

Home runs leading off baseball games aren’t all that rare an occurrence in Major League Baseball. However, the one hit by Gerardo Parra on Saturday night is rare for a couple different reasons that just so happened to come together on the same night.

1. It came on the very first pitch of the game from Tom Koehler.

Again, in and of itself, not all that unusual, but wait for part two.

2. It held up as the only run scored in the entire baseball game.

That means the Arizona Diamondbacks and Miami Marlins played a complete nine-inning game, and all of the offense came on the first of 236 pitches. According to Elias (via ESPN Stats), the last time a baseball game followed that exact script was all the back on Sept. 2, 1963.

The hitter that day? None other than Pete Rose, as the Cincinnati Reds knocked off the Mets 1-0 in Game 2 of a doubleheader.

That’s pretty remarkable when you think about it, but if you’re to believe Parra, that may have been the way hitting coach Don Baylor had it drawn up all afternoon.

From the Associated Press:

Parra’s home run to right-center field came on the first pitch from Tom Koehler (0-2) on Saturday. It was Parra’s third career leadoff home run and it came on the advice of batting coach Don Baylor.

”I talked to him before the game and he said, ‘Just swing first pitch’ and he was right,” Parra said. ”He’s got more experience than me.

Of course the game wasn’t without other close calls offensively. In fact, the closest one came in the bottom half of the first inning when Chris Coghlan singled to right field and Derek Dietrich attempted to score from second. Gerardo Parra took care of that problem, too, recording his sixth assist of the season to end Miami’s one and only true threat to break the shutout.

”The throw there, we’ve seen it a lot,” manager Kirk Gibson said. ”It’s unreal how good he is and how accurate and strong his arm is. It was a big play for us.”

For the record, the winning pitching back in 1963 was Jim Maloney. He went the distance to notch his 20th victory of the season.

On Saturday, the winning pitcher was Brandon McCarthy, which is also a noteworthy story. He needed only 100 pitches to complete the three-hit shutout — third of his career — and earn his first victory since suffering a skull fracture on the mound last September.

Joe Nagy, a retired chemical engineer from Phoenix, woke up in the middle of one night and a clear liquid dropped out of his nose as he bent his head over, but he didn’t worry about it.

“I am getting old — I’ll be 69 in six weeks,” said Nagy. “When you get old, different things go wrong with you.”

As the drippy nose got more frequent and he developed a cough, his doctors dismissed his symptoms as allergies and prescribed Benadryl. But after several visits to an ear, nose and throat specialist, medical experts came up with a different diagnosis: Nagy was leaking fluid from his brain.

“Oh my God, I was scared to death — scared, scared scared,” said Nagy, who had been carrying a box of tissues around with him for months. “I thought they would have to open up my head to find the leak. Most people who have brain surgery wake up and they are never the same again.”

Doctors took a sample of the fluid and his wife of 47 years, Shirley, then head nurse at a local hospital, took it to her lab for testing.

When results came back, doctors realized he had a cerebrospinal fluid leak. The potentially life-threatening condition is rare, occurring in only 1 in 100,000 or 1 in 200,000 patients.

The main danger is infection or getting air in the head that can herniate the brain.

Nagy, in March 2011, went to a local surgeon who failed to close the leak and referred him to Dr. Peter Nakaji,, director of the neurosurgery program at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix.

Since surgery at Barrow in August, “I haven’t had a drop out of my nose since,” said Nagy.

Nakaji told ABCNews.com that the leak was caused by an “out-pouching” of the brain sac, causing meningitis.

“It was way lateral into his sinus,” he said. “Typically, it’s midline in the skull.

“It certainly could have killed him,” he added. “He was already quite sick at the time.”

Though the condition is rare, Nagy is not the first in Arizona to undergo treatment for a brain leak.

Last year, Aundrea Aragon, also of Arizona, noticed a tasteless liquid dripped from her nose whenever she bent over, and her doctors diagnosed it as allergies.

“It wasn’t even dripping; it was pouring out of my nose,” said Aragon, a 35-year-old mother from Tucson. “If I looked down or bent over, it would literally pour out of the left side of my nose. I had no control at all.”

Even though doctors “blew off” her concerns, Aragon said, she knew something was seriously wrong.

“I was literally drinking this fluid and my chest was hurting,” she said. ‘I was waking up choking on the liquid. I thought I had pneumonia.

“I was walking around my house with paper towels shoved up my nose and changing it every 10 minutes,” she said.

Her brain was leaking cerebrospinal fluid through two cracks in the back of her sphenoid sinus, a condition that could have killed her.

“I am still kind of in shock,” said Aragon. “I was very fortunate. They said I could get meningitis and go into a coma and die.”

Dr. Alexander G. Chiu, chief of the division of otolaryngology at the University of Arizona Medical Center, performed Aragon’s surgery last October. He told ABCNews.com at the time that he had only treated 100 cases in his career.

Most often, the condition is seen in overweight patients who have high cranial pressure, and the sinus “pops open.” Sometimes a car accident or head trauma can cause a tear. In Aragon’s case, doctors didn’t know why it happened.

There’s nothing like an ABBA tune to drive an earworm deep inside the skull. Maybe that’s the key to the group’s longevity.

Thanks to such films as Mama Mia! the blow-dried, spandex-clad ’70s superstars are back in the spotlight with the opening today of a museum in their honor. It’s part of the larger Swedish Music Hall of Fame, which also debuts today.

Never mind that the group split up in 1983. The Swedish tourist office reportedly gets thousands of questions annually from visitors eager to connect with ABBA on its home turf. With ABBA The Museum fans can not only hear the music, but squeeze into some spandex (in a virtual sense, anyway) and record music videos.

Now that Shug McGaughey has won the Kentucky Derby, it’s time for the 62-year-old trainer to go after another race missing from his Hall of Fame resume.

Orb will follow up his win at Churchill Downs by running in the Preakness on May 18, giving the colt a shot at the Triple Crown.

Orb arrived back at his home base in New York on Sunday, as did McGaughey and jockey Joel Rosario. The trainer was still absorbing what happened a day earlier. The colt extended his winning streak to five races, splashing through the slop to win the Derby by 2¼ lengths, giving McGaughey and Rosario their first Derby wins. Orb rallied from 17th and made a sweeping move on the turn for home to win.

“It did not matter if it was wet or dry, the best horse won,” rival trainer D. Wayne Lukas said

McGaughey has never won the Preakness in two previous attempts. He hasn’t had a horse in the race since 1989, when Easy Goer finished second to Sunday Silence, duplicating their Derby finish that year.

For a trainer who has always shown patience with his horses, McGaughey is eagerly anticipating the grueling Triple Crown campaign that compresses three races into a five-week span.

“I can’t wait to get to the Preakness and do it again,” he said.

It’s fitting that Orb is set to run in Baltimore, the hometown of Stuart Janney III. He and co-owner Ogden Mills “Dinny” Phipps, who also bred Orb, have never won the Preakness.

“The Preakness is important to me. I grew up around it, went there all the time,” Janney said.

McGaughey has worked exclusively for Janney and Phipps for years, training the horses they breed. In a sport known for rampant jealousy, there was an outpouring of goodwill for all three men after the Derby.

Trainers Todd Pletcher and Chad Brown stopped by to wish McGaughey well, while Lukas and Bob Baffert, who didn’t have a horse in the race, spoke warmly of him, too.

“It was a wonderful victory for Stuart Janney and Dinny Phipps. There was a lot of karma there that rewards people that have been great to the sport,” Lukas said. “I saw Dinny before the race and told him that I thought it was going to be his turn and I was a little worried.”

After watching replays of the Derby, McGaughey was more impressed with Orb.

“The maturity he showed yesterday in everything he did, from his Derby day to his experience in the paddock, which was tremendous, going in the post and the way he raced, it was kind of amazing to me,” he said.

Orb will see some familiar challengers in the 1 3/16-mile Preakness. Mylute and Oxbow, who finished fifth and sixth in the Derby, along with Will Take Charge (eighth), Itsmyluckyday (15th) and Goldencents (17th) are likely to face off against him again.

“As good as he is, if Goldencents rebounds and gets back to his Santa Anita Derby effort, I think we have a chance to be right there,” trainer Doug O’Neill said about his horse.

Among the new horses possibly joining the Preakness field are Illinois Derby winner Departing, Sunland Derby winner Govenor Charlie, Southwest runner-up Fear the Kitten and Bellarmine.

Lukas, a five-time Preakness winner, thinks the next race will be the toughest for Orb.

“If he gets by that, he gets to go back home to Belmont and run right out of his stall,” he said.

Golden Soul, who finished second in the Derby as a 34-1 shot, will likely pass on the Preakness and point toward the Belmont Stakes on June 8, trainer Dallas Stewart said.

The final leg of the Triple Crown is where some of Pletcher’s Derby quintet could land, too.

Revolutionary, third in the Derby, and Overanalyze (11th) will likely run in the race.

Pletcher wasn’t sure about future plans for Palace Malice and Verrazano, whose four-race winning streak ended in the Derby. Charming Kitten will go back to turf races.

Trainer D. Wayne Lukas will take his two Derby entries, Oxbow (sixth) and Will Take Charge (eighth), to the Preakness, which will be run over 13/16 miles at Pimlico Race Course.

“We are all going to have to get better to beat (Orb),” Lukas said. “I think the Preakness will be the biggest hurdle for him for the Triple Crown. If he gets by that, he gets to go back home to Belmont and run right out of his stall.”

More rain fell Sunday morning as Orb took a light walk under the roof of his barn and McGaughey met the news media.

“The Preakness is another race I haven’t won, and it’s a race I would like to win,” McGaughey said. “And I think that all things being equal, we’re going in there with a horse that’s going to have a huge chance to win. And if that happens, then life’s going to change a little bit.”

McGaughey won the Belmont Stakes in 1989 with Easy Goer. That same year, Easy Goer was the Derby favorite and regarded as a Triple Crown threat. But Easy Goer finished second in the Derby to Sunday Silence in another race run over a muddy track.

“One time the rain got in our way, and one time it didn’t. And that was yesterday,” said McGaughey, a native of Lexington, Ky.

Orb, whose name was inspired by the name of his father, Malibu Moon, started Saturday’s Derby as the 6-1 co-favorite with Revolutionary.

“I really did think I was running the best horse,” said McGaughey, whose winner was ridden by Joel Rosario, the hottest jockey in America.

McGaughey now looks forward to seeing how much his horse can improve. “I’m continually amazed at what I’m seeing and what he can do, what kind of ability he’s got. Who knows?” he said.

Elsewhere around the barns, trainers of the three horses that finished in order behind Orb said they will skip the Preakness. But Goldencents, a disappointing 17th, will run in Baltimore.

Trainer Dallas Stewart of runner-up Golden Soul, a 32-1 surprise who finished 2½ lengths behind Orb, said his plan was to bypass the Preakness and point toward the Belmont.

“That would give us five weeks, and hopefully we can get one of the three,” Stewart said.

Todd Pletcher, trainer of a record-tying five horses in the Derby, said Revolutionary (third) and Overanalyze (11th) also will bypass the Preakness and go straight to the Belmont. He said he wasn’t sure about Palace Malice (12th) and Verrazano (14th). His plan for Charming Kitten (ninth) was to return him to races on grass.

Chad Brown, trainer of fourth-place Normandy Invasion, said his horse wouldn’t run in the Preakness. Normandy Invasion had the Derby lead at the top of the stretch.

Mylute was ridden to fifth by Rosie Napravnik, the best finish for a female jockey in the Derby. Todd Quast, general manager of GoldMark Farm, said the Preakness was a solid possibility. “We need a couple more days to think about it,” Quast said.

Goldencents, who finished 17th despite going off as the third choice of bettors at 7-1, will run in Baltimore. “We’re a go for the Preakness,” said trainer Doug O’Neill, who won the Derby and Preakness last year with I’ll Have Another.

The Preakness was a possibility for Lines of Battle (seventh), though he was headed back to Ireland on Sunday. “He came out of the race fine,” assistant trainer T.J. Comerford said.

The plan was uncertain for Giant Finish (10th), who trains in Maryland. Trainer Eddie Plesa Jr. said it was 60-40 that Itsmyluckyday (15th) would run in the Preakness.

May 4, 2013               9:06 PM EDT

there’s sobering news coming out of the commonwealth regarding a member of its flagship university’s football program.

According to multiple media outlets, Kentucky safety Ashely Lowery was involved in an early-morning automobile accident Saturday in Georgia.  Other than Lowery’s vehicle overturned and that he was thrown from it, there are no further details available regarding the one-car crash that occurred at 4:20 a.m. local time.

WKYT-TV reported that Lowery is in “critical but stable condition” at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, Georgia.  The extent and nature of Lowery’s injuries have yet to be released.

A UK football spokesperson told the Lexington Herald-Leader “I don’t have any details at this point,” adding “[w]e’re still in the process of gathering information.”  New head coach Mark Stoops, who was in attendance at the Derby Saturday, is being kept apprised of the situation.

“Just need to keep praying” and “Everybody keep calm and keep praying for him” were sent out by current UK quarterback Maxwell Smith and former defensive back Martavius Neloms, respectively.

Ashley started eight games in 2012 as a true sophomore, finishing fifth on the team in tackles (43).  He exited spring practice this year as the starter at one of the safety spots.

Our thoughts and prayers go out Lowery for a speedy recovery.

Orb and Verrazano are currently the favorites to win the 139th installment of the Kentucky Derby this Saturday, according to Thursday’s latest odds (via OddsShark).

Each with 4/1 odds, Orb, the winner of four straight races, and Verrazano sit atop the 20-horse draw. Verrazano will start from the No. 14 post on Saturday with Orb two spots down at No. 16.

Goldencents, who will race out of the No. 8 spot, has the best odds after that at 11/2. This is the horse co-owned by Louisville men’s basketball head coach Rick Pitino. That guy sure needs something good to go his way this year.

Going down the line, Revolutionary and Normandy Invasion are 9/1 favorites out of the No. 3 and 5 posts, respectively, and Itsmyluckyday carries 12/1 odds running out of the No. 12 posting.

Looking for long shots? Black Onyx, Golden Soul, Giant Finish and Falling Sky all have 50/1 odds of winning the first leg of the Triple Crown. This one, though, could be wet. Current forecasts for Saturday in Louisville project a 70 percent chance of rain, potentially heavy at times, which could certainly affect the proceedings at Churchill Downs.

Complete odds:

1. Black Onyx 50/1
2. Oxbow 33/1
3. Revolutionary 9/1
4. Golden Soul 50/1
5. Normandy Invasion 9/1
6. Mylute 16/1
7. Giant Finish 50/1
8. Goldencents 11/2

In the moment of mayhem or in an instant of exquisite fear, people often report being comforted by an invisible companion, what some call a “guardian angel.”

But who is the guardian angel?

John Geiger is an internationally known explorer and author who has been investigating this phenomenon for years and said it remains a great mystery.

“The stories are always similar — that there’s a sense of another being, a presence very vividly,” Geiger said. “There is never any fear or panic when this being appears. There is just a sense of calm, peace and a sense of benevolence, a sense that there’s something good there, something that will help them.”

There have been numerous reports of this vivid presence.

Stephanie Schwabe, 54, of Charleston, S.C., was cave diving for a research project in the Bahamas when she lost her safety line.

“I suddenly realized I was in trouble,” she said. “My heart rate, I could hear it bouncing in my eyes, and I just kind of sat down on the [cave] floor and cried.”

Schwabe’s husband and diving partner, Rob Palmer, had died in a diving accident in the Red Sea only weeks before. Now, alone, she was facing her own dark death.

“Suddenly, the whole cave brightened up,” she said.

Schwabe said that into that watery world floated the words of her late husband: “Believe you can, believe you can’t; either way, you are right.”

“And then I calmed down and then I suddenly looked around and I saw what I thought was a white thread,” she said. “It was kind of like he was there for me, in a way — in an emotional way.”

So what was going on there? Geiger said he doesn’t think people like Schwabe are having hallucinations, but instead are experiencing a “very concrete survival mechanism” that is part of human heritage. In a life-threatening crisis, Geiger believes, our minds experience both the terror of the moment and the peace of perspective.

“The brain is able to sort of stand back from that, and sort of rise above that and rationally help this person get through that,” he said. “The guardian angel is us.”

In extreme cases, our subconscious companion appears to take the form of a physical or spiritual entity.

Rose Benvenuto, 71, of Poughquag, N.Y., said she saw hers at the scene of a terrible car wreck.

“Only my guardian angel could have saved me from such an accident,” she said.

She believes that the proof lies in a photograph, seen by millions on the Internet, that she said shows the guardian angel who helped her escape from a near-fatal car accident. But Geiger disagreed.

“When I see a picture like that, I’m skeptical,” he said. “I really think the basis of this is neurological. … I do think this is something our brain is creating.”

Yet voices, he said, like the one Schwabe said she heard, seem to be almost commonplace.

“They will always say they heard a voice,” Geiger said. “I’ll say, ‘Was it audible? Would other people have heard it?’ [They’ll say,] ‘No, no, but I heard a voice,’ so there is a communication that’s happening inside them.”

Sometimes, the communication isn’t with sound but with images.

A few weeks ago, Marty Hodges, 46, of Kalamazoo, Mich., took his two teenage boys skiing in Colorado. The wide-open spaces seemed perfect for a man who suffers from extreme claustrophobia, but then an avalanche happened.

“When I was hit by the snow and I was immediately turned inside out in this complete blackness, I was sure I was going to die,” Hodges said.

Oregon offensive lineman Kyle Long has a first-round grade, Mike Mayock told SI’s Peter King. Long is rated as the 29th-best prospect on Mayock’s board, and another draft expert told King that he expects Long to go off the board before the end of the first round on Thursday night. Long is rated as the 67th-best prospect on SB Nation’s top 200 big board.

Long played tackle at Oregon, but could end up at guard at the NFL level due to his strength. A lot of conversation has centered around tackle prospects Luke Joeckel, Eric Fisher, and Lane Johnson, but a team that doesn’t want to trade up to get a tackle could be willing to take a chance on Long later in the first round.

Kyle is the brother of St. Louis Rams defensive end Chris Long, and the son of Hall of Fame defensive end Howie Long. He also was a high-level baseball player and originally accepted a scholarship to play baseball at Florida State when he was coming out of high school.

Representatives from 26 NFL teams gathered at San Jose State’s pro day on March 15, where 13 players (joined by additional prospects from small schools around the area) worked out outdoors on FieldTurf.

Ryan Otten, TE (6-foot-5 5/8, 241 pounds) — Otten — who was at the NFL Scouting Combine— ran the 40-yard dash in 4.76 and 4.69 seconds. He had a 33-inch vertical jump and a 9-foot-4 broad jump. He did the short shuttle in 4.62 seconds and the three-cone drill in 7.50 seconds. He also performed 17 lifts of 225 pounds on the bench press. Although Otten — out of respect for the teams — wouldn’t mention which NFL franchises he’s met individually with, he did say that three teams came to San Jose to work him out and he had visits with two other teams.

Hilary Koprowski Dead

04/13/13               10:57 PM ET EDT

Dr. Hilary Koprowski, a pioneering virologist who developed the first successful oral vaccination for polio, died this week at his suburban Philadelphia home. He was 96.

Although not as well-known as fellow researchers Jonas Salk and Albert Sabin, Koprowski’s 1950 clinical trial was the first to show it was possible to vaccinate against polio, the crippling and sometimes fatal disease that’s now all but eradicated.

Koprowski’s son, Christopher, said Saturday his father liked the scientific recognition his work received without the celebrity of Salk and Sabin.

“He enjoyed not having his scientific work disrupted,” said Christopher Koprowski, chief of radiation oncology at Christiana Care Health System in Wilmington, Del. “Not that he was a modest individual, mind you.”

Christopher Koprowski said his father had been sick for several months before dying Thursday in the same Wynnewood home he’d lived in since 1957.

Hilary Koprowski self-administered the live-virus oral vaccine he developed before the 1950 trial – about two years before Salk’s injectable version using a dead form of the virus began testing with the backing of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, now the March of Dimes.

Sabin, who Koprowski’s son said sometimes collaborated with his father, was the first to get the more-effective oral version, which didn’t require boosters, licensed for use in the U.S.

Koprowski went on to be the director of The Wistar Institute in Philadelphia from 1957 to 1991. Under his leadership, the independent research institution developed a rubella vaccine that helped eradicate the disease in much of the world, Wistar officials said. It was during that time the institute also developed a more effective rabies vaccine.

A talented musician, the Polish-born Koprowski was a penniless immigrant in Rio de Janeiro making money teaching piano before hooking up with a lab there and eventually moving to the United States, his son said.

“He was a great dad. He was colorful, charismatic,” Christopher Koprowski said. “He’s still the most brilliant person I’ve ever met.”

Louisville players including Cortnee Walton (13) celebrate after a national semifinal against California at the Women’s Final Four of the NCAA college basketball tournament, Sunday, April 7, 2013, in New Orleans. Louisville won 64-57.

12:20 A.M.           APRIL 8, 2013

Louisville’s basketball teams have been pulling for each other during both NCAA tournaments, sweating through the nail biters, cheering the wins.

There hasn’t been a loss yet. It sure is a joyous time to be a Cardinal.

The women got a pep talk from men’s coach Rick Pitino after they lost to Notre Dame in the Big East tournament – and they haven’t lost since, beating Cal 64-57 on Sunday night to advance to the school’s second NCAA championship game.

The women’s players gathered at a New Orleans restaurant to watch the men beat Wichita State on Saturday and will be watching again Monday night when the men play Michigan for the title.

“The way I look at it, I think the men are trying to feed off of our success,” women’s coach Jeff Walz said with a smirk before adding on a serious note that he’d received word from Atlanta that the Louisville men “were in the hotel lobby, jumping up and down and cheering for us.”

Pitino texted Walz after their victory “congratulating us and telling me to tell the players what an unbelievable job they did.”

And so they have.

Connecticut women’s coach Geno Auriemma is well aware of what Louisville is going through right now.

Back in 2004, the men’s and women’s teams at UConn were playing for the national title and both came away victorious, the only time one school won both titles in the same season.

Now Louisville can do it again.

“If it were easy, it would have been done a lot of times, but the fact it’s only been done once shows you how difficult it is to do,” said Auriemma after his team routed Notre Dame 83-65 to reach the final. “At the same time, this has been a magical year for Louisville. … It’s just amazing what they’ve been able to do, so I think we’re playing against Louisville and we’re playing against a certain karma, maybe.”

Auriemma’s Huskies were finally able to shake off the Fighting Irish, thanks to an incredible effort by star freshman Breanna Stewart. She scored a career-high 29 points to go with four blocks and was seemingly everywhere.

“Given the stage, and what was at stake, I don’t know that I’ve seen any bigger performance,” said Auriemma. “I know there’s been NCAA tournament games that we’ve had certain individuals play great, but I don’t remember a player having a better game in this environment.”

UConn will be going for its eighth championship Tuesday night, which would match Tennessee for the most in the women’s college game.

April 7, 2013

In the end, it seemed less a victory than an exorcism.

A startling dominance that Notre Dame held over Connecticut crumbled Sunday night. Not even Tennessee at the height of its power could defeat the Huskies with such assured regularity.

After losing to the Fighting Irish in the past two national semifinal rounds,UConn prevailed on Sunday, 83-65, advancing to the N.C.A.A. title game against Louisville on Tuesday. The Huskies defeated the Cardinals, 72-58 during Big East conference play this season.

Notre Dame (35-2) had defeated UConn (34-4) in seven of their last eight meetings, including three times this year. But the Huskies are a more assured team now. Their freshmen, forwards Breanna Stewart and Morgan Tuck and guard Moriah Jefferson, have relaxed and matured, no longer seeming to be burdened by expectation.

The 6-foot-4 Stewart delivered a career-high 29 points on 10-of-16 shooting against Notre Dame, along with five rebounds and four blocked shots, hitting 3-pointers and runners and critical free throws. Tuck grabbed seven rebounds, and Jefferson did her part with Kelly Faris defensively to keep Skylar Diggins without a field goal in the first half and shooting a frigid 3 for 15 on the night.

After arriving at UConn as the national high school player of the year, Stewart had a brilliant opening to her college career, but then her confidence ebbed. She said she began thinking too much instead of playing freely, failing to score against Baylor, the defending national champion and shooting 1 for 7 in a defeat against Notre Dame.

But Stewart re-emerged in the N.C.A.A. tournament, and was named the most outstanding player in the Bridgeport Regional. Sunday, she played best game of her young career in the most important game of her career.

“She’s gotten stronger mentally, she’s gotten stronger emotionally,” Coach Geno Auriemma said of Stewart. “Stewie really takes things to heart and puts a lot of pressure on herself. When she wasn’t playing well, she wasn’t strong enough mentally and emotionally to put it aside.”

As the regular season ended, though, Stewart seemed to become liberated.

“There was a renewed, almost like, ‘I’m not going to settle for this anymore; I’m not going to allow myself to feel like this anymore,’ ” Auriemma said.

There have been many UConn players who have delivered big performances during the N.C.A.A. tournament, Auriemma noted, but added: “I don’t remember a player having a better game in this environment. Certainly, I’ve never had a freshman have a game like this in this environment.”

While Stewart and UConn advance to the championship game, Diggins will have the bittersweet commemoration of being an all-American, but one who did not win a national title despite three appearances in the Final Four.

Notre Dame shot only 22 for 74 over all on Sunday as if familiarity, nerves and the importance of the moment left the Irish unsettled. Guard Kayla McBride, who scored more than 20 points each of the three previous games this season against UConn, missed 15 of her 20 attempts Sunday. The Irish clanged 22 of their first 25 shots and never seemed comfortable.

“I thought we looked nervous coming out,” Notre Dame Coach Muffet McGraw said. “I don’t know why. We’ve been here before.”

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, UConn’s leading scorer on the season, who can curiously disappear for long stretches, imposed herself early and late on Sunday to finish with 16 points. UConn finally kept its poise against the Irish and successfully closed out a game after leading in the second half of all seven defeats to the Irish, dating to the 2011 national semifinals.

UConn also received some redemptive guard play from the junior Bria Hartley, who scored a career-high 29 points against Notre Dame as a freshman, but has been erratic and self-doubting much of this season. Sunday, Hartley began the game on the bench and committed six turnovers, but she also provided 15 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals and blistering speed in transition.

On Tuesday, Auriemma will seek his eighth national title, attempting to match the number won by Tennessee’s pioneering former coach Pat Summitt, whose career was cut short after last season by early-onset Alzheimer’s.

Despite its poor shooting Sunday, Notre Dame led by 26-25 late in the first half. But UConn made a 14-3 run to lead, 39-29, at intermission. Hartley hit a 3-pointer and a jumper to start the run, and Stewart contributed a 3-pointer. The Huskies took a lead they would not surrender.

In the second half, Stewart injured her right shoulder while running through a screen, and Notre Dame drew to within 61-55. But Faris grabbed two offensive rebounds and a missed free throw on the same possession, and Stewart returned to the game. Her swooping runner pulled UConn ahead by 64-55. A pair of free throws by Stewart ended the suspense at 68-55 with 4 minutes 8 seconds left.

“We just played so poorly,” McGraw said. “I thought Breanna Stewart was fantastic, unbelievable. It is real impressive to have a freshman have that type of game, to be the best player on the floor for Connecticut. You don’t expect a freshman to rise to the occasion like that. I thought it was a phenomenal performance.”

He only hoped, Auriemma said, that Stewart could summon one more performance at that level in the title game on Tuesday.

March 31, 2013

The Michigan freshman Nik Stauskas bounded into the Sheraton hotel in downtown Dallas to meet his parents and immediately declared: “I’m going to go off this game. I can feel it.”

It was Friday afternoon, before the Wolverines’ game against Kansas in the Round of 16. Despite his optimism, Stauskas, who scored 11 points, shot 1 for 4 from 3-point range, extending his slump from beyond the arc to 2 of 16 over a four-game stretch.

On Sunday morning, before Michigan played Florida in the South Region final at Cowboys Stadium, Stauskas had renewed faith. In a text message to his mother, Ruta, he wrote, “I can feel it, I’m due.”

This time, Stauskas’s prediction was as accurate as his shot. He found a comfortable spot in the left corner and shredded the Gators by making 6 of 6 3-point shots. The barrage helped the Wolverines (30-7) roll to a 79-59 victory and a berth in the Final Four.

“We have this thing, ‘Shoot it deep in the bucket,’ never leave it short, give it a chance,” Stauskas said. “I shot like I know how to shoot it, and it was going in. It was never a lack of confidence.”

Stauskas finished with 22 points and 7-of-8 shooting from the field. His only miss came with 12 minutes 27 seconds left and the Wolverines leading by 58-44. As a defender rushed toward him near the baseline, he faked a shot, dribbled and missed a 15-footer.

Other than that, Stauskas never gave the nets a break.

“I was just letting them fly,” he said.

In Michigan’s offense, Stauskas frequently stands along the baseline or deep in the corner, waiting for the ball. When point guard Trey Burke tries to turn the corner after a screen by center Mitch McGary near the top of the key, Burke can drive to the basket, pass to McGary rolling to the basket or look to the corners for Stauskas, Tim Hardaway Jr. or Glenn Robinson III.

When Florida’s defenders surrounded McGary or tried to help with Burke, the ball went to Stauskas. His first 3-pointer gave the Wolverines a 7-0 lead. The Gators could not contain Burke, so they went to a zone. Stauskas answered with back-to-back 3s late in the first half to put Michigan ahead by 41-17.

“Nik didn’t have to do anything,” Hardaway said with a chuckle. “He was just standing in the corner, and we were finding him.”

Standstill shooters can have difficulty in the Big Ten, a conference in which defenses usually force players to dribble and make decisions. It can be a chaotic existence for a shooter, especially when he faces heckling from the opposing bench.

One Big Ten coach cursed at Stauskas in the middle of a shot, his father, Paul, said. Coaches from programs outside the conference have also peppered him with verbal abuse.

Opponents try to annoy him with taunts when he sets up in the left corner. Stauskas dishes it right back. He was called for a technical foul against West Virginia.

When Stauskas was growing up in Mississauga, Ontario, he was devoted to basketball, not hockey. When his father gave the family a choice of a putting green, a pool or a basketball court in the backyard, Nik pleaded for the court. After the court was installed, Paul’s duty was to stand under the basket and return the ball when it fell through the net.

“Forty in a row one time,” Paul Stauskas said.

Nik Stauskas, who entered the starting lineup in the seventh game of the season, is averaging 11.5 points. He is shooting 45 percent from the 3-point line and 85 percent from the foul line, and he is also a skilled passer.

Stauskas enjoys playing against zone defenses, he said, but the next zone he sees will be the long, athletic web of Syracuse on Saturday in a national semifinal in Atlanta.

Florida guard Mike Rosario was too short to cover the 6-foot-6 Stauskas in the corner, and the Gators’ Erik Murphy was too slow. Syracuse is neither too short nor too slow, but Stauskas is undeterred.

“I love zone defenses,” he said. “I’m built for that.”

From the opening tip of the season, there was only one question in women’s college basketball: How do you stop Brittney Griner?

Louisville found the answer Sunday night, pulling off one of the biggest upsets in the history of the tournament.

Shoni Schimmel scored 22 points and Monique Reid hit two free throws with 2.6 seconds left to lift the fifth-seeded Cardinals over the defending national champions, 82-81, ending Griner’s incredible career.

The Cardinals made 16 three-pointers, matching the NCAA record, to pull off the victory at Oklahoma City.

“I’m just sad,” Griner said. “I didn’t do what I needed to do to get my team to the Elite Eight and just disappointment in myself.”

No. 1-seeded Baylor (34-2) had won 32 straight games and 74 of 75 behind Griner, the second-highest scoring player in NCAA history. She also holds the career records for blocks and dunks. But the 6-foot-8 star didn’t make a basket until the second half, then committed a foul with 2.6 seconds left that gave Louisville a chance to win.

Reid made those two foul shots, rescuing the Cardinals (27-8) after they squandered a 17-point lead in the last 71/2 minutes.

Hours earlier, the men’s team from Louisville beat Duke, 85-63, to reach the Final Four.

Reid and the Cardinals will play Tennessee in the Oklahoma City Regional final Tuesday for a berth in the Final Four.

Odyssey Sims scored 29 points, including two free throws with 9.1 seconds to go that put Baylor ahead 81-80.

Ms Packer, who is 5ft 7in tall, says it has put her off having any more children in case they are equally gigantic.

She said: ‘It was a massive shock for everyone – no-one had any idea he would be this big.

‘During the pregnancy I was just getting bigger and bigger.

‘It makes it even more special to have him home now after all he has been through.’

Mr King, a chef at All Bar One in Montpellier, said it had been a scary situation.

The 21-year-old, who is 6ft 2in, has been with Jade for three years, said: ‘We were told everything was normal until he popped out. It was scary because his shoulders got stuck and the staff told us he probably wouldn’t survive.

‘But now we are home, we are getting used to family life together. Everyone has said his size will level out and he will grow at a normal rate.’

During their ordeal the new parents were given support by the Bristol-based baby charity Cots for Tots, who gave them accommodation so they did not have to commute from Cheltenham to see George.

So far George is showing no signs of having suffered any adverse effects as a result of his traumatic birth but he is continuing to be closely monitored.

Arijit Guha, an Arizona State University graduate student who successfully tussled with health insurance giant Aetna over his medical bills last year, has died at 32, according to a close friend.

His wife, Heather Ehlers, created Facebook in tribute to this life, remembering him as a “rabble rouser, do-gooder, mustache enthusiast.”

“His life was one of love, optimism, joy, humor, and compassion, and this page is to celebrate that life,” she wrote.

Guha returned from a trip to India last year with a stomach ache and only one month later learned he had stage-4 colon cancer. Aetna agreed to full coverage for his treatment, but the aggressive cancer returned in the fall.

“He ran out of treatment options,” the close friend said. “He’d been in hospice care for many months.”

Guha died at home, Ehlers said.

“My heart is aching, but the pain is eased a bit knowing that he has the support of such an amazing community of people, so many of whom have never met him,” she said on the tribute page today.”

After getting his tough diagnosis, Guha faced hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical bills.

He had a policy under the university’s health plan for which he paid $400 a month out of pocket, but its carrier, Aetna, had an annual ceiling on payouts. After surgery and chemotherapy, he had exhausted the lifetime $300,000 limit.

[The Affordable Health Care Act has since eliminated lifetime limits, but then, it did not include student health plans.]

Outraged, Guha turned to Twitter and other social media to make his case.

But in August, Aetna CEO Mark T. Bertolini, a former paramedic who has had his own share of medical crises, tweeted directly with Guha and agreed to pay “every last penny” of his bills.

“The system is broken, and I am committed to fixing it,” Bertolini said on his Twitter account. “I am glad we connected today and got this issue solved. I appreciate the dialogue no matter how pointed. I’ve got it and own it!”

It turns out Bertolini and Guha had much in common.

In 2001, Bertolini’s son, Eric, then 16, was diagnosed with a rare and deadly lymphoma, according to a profile in the Hartford Courant. And in 2004, when he was president of Cigna, Bertolini was disabled after being nearly killed in a ski accident. He also eventually donated a kidney to help save his son.

Bertolini admitted that the health care system was “broke” and tweeted, “There is a lot to do to make it right.”

Meanwhile, Guha had raised $120,000 through T-shirt sales in his edgy campaign “Poop Strong,” which riffed on cancer survivor Lance Armstrong’s “Live Strong.” And when Aetna stepped in, Guha said he would donate all of it to three cancer charities in Arizona.

Colorectal cancer is the second-leading cancer killer in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In 2008, the last year for which there are statistics, 142,950 Americans were diagnosed with colorectal cancer and 52,857 Americans died from the disease.

Surprisingly, colorectal cancer is not that uncommon among younger people like Guha, especially those who have a family history of early-onset disease.

“It’s not shocking at all,” said Dr. Joel Levine, founding director of the Colon Cancer Prevention Program at the University of Connecticut.

Symptoms can include rectal bleeding or anemia, abdominal pain or occult blood in the stool.

Such was the case with Guha, who was diagnosed in February 2011. He had settled in Phoenix with his wife and was getting a doctorate in environmental sustainability. The couple returned from a trip to India to visit his relatives and Guha developed abdominal pain.

March 20, 2013

Scrambling to placate international lenders, Cyprus late Wednesday proposed to nationalize pension funds from state-run companies and conduct an emergency bond sale to help raise the €5.8 billion the indebted country needs to secure a bailout.

Delia Velculescu of the International Monetary Fund, right, and Isabel von Koppen Mertes of the European Central Bank, left, are shown arriving at the presidential palace in Nicosia.

The proposals are meant to sharply reduce the amount of money that would be raised by a controversial tax on bank deposits, as originally planned in an international bailout package totaling €10 billion, or about $13 billion, that the Cypriot Parliament rejected the night before.

But even the revised plan contains a bank tax that, while much smaller than originally proposed, might still not be palatable to Parliament. Under the new plan, all Cypriot bank deposits of up to €100,000 would be hit by a one-time tax of 2 percent. Deposits above that threshold would be subject to a 5 percent levy.

The fallback was being cobbled together as Cyprus’s finance minister pressed his case in Moscow on Wednesday in hopes of securing additional aid from Russia, many of whose wealthiest citizens have big deposits in Cypriot banks.

At the same time the Cypriot government extended through next Tuesday a bank holiday meant to prevent a run on Cyprus’s financial institutions. Banks have frozen all accounts in a financial crisis here that risks tipping the country into default and sowing turmoil across the euro zone.

Banks have been closed since Saturday, and the authorities have ordered banks to keep automated bank machines filled with cash as long as their doors remain shut. But that has been of little help to the thousands of international companies who do banking in Cyprus, which cannot transfer money in and out of those accounts to conduct business.

The extended bank holiday is designed to buy time for the Cypriot authorities to reach an agreement with the so-called troika of rescuers — the International Monetary Fund, the European Central Bank and the European Commission — whose representatives were in Nicosia on Wednesday but were not certain to sign off on Cyprus’s latest plan.

Three banks dominate the economy, and each is edging close to collapse. The government was also making tentative plans to merge at least two of them — Cyprus Popular Bank and Bank of Cyprus — and place the healthy assets into a one entity, while moving troubled assets into a so-called bad bank.

With all sides fearing that a crisis is imminent, even the Church of Cyprus, one of this Mediterranean island’s biggest investors, was offering to throw its considerable wealth behind the rescue effort.

European officials, and especially the European Central Bank, are watching the situation with alarm, said a person close to the discussions who was not authorized to speak publicly. Right now, Cypriot banks, crippled by their heavy exposure to Greece’s collapsed economy, are heavily dependent on low-interest financing from the E.C.B., which could be cut off if the banks do not remain solvent.

If Cyprus does not soon receive a financial lifeline, European officials fear that “the damage would be enormous, and the country itself would be at risk of collapse,” the person close to the discussions said. Officials are concerned about the risk that Cyprus might need to leave the euro currency union, creating “a painful situation that would spur chaos,” this person said.

On Wednesday morning, the finance minister of Cyprus, Michalis Sarris, met with his Russian counterpart, Anton G. Siluanov, at the Russian Finance Ministry. In the afternoon Mr. Sarris met for about 90 minutes with a deputy prime minister, Igor I. Shuvalov, at the main government offices in the Russian White House.

Cypriot banks racked up huge losses in the past several years by issuing loans to businesses in Greece that are now virtually worthless as that country grapples with the fourth year of a severe recession. The banks also took huge financial losses on large holdings of Greek government debt, which they bought when times were good in order to profit from attractive interest rates. The bailout crisis has outraged average Cypriots, many of whom oppose the government’s skimming their accounts to pay for the banks’ mistakes.

Russia has a significant stake in the outcome because its citizens, including many of the country’s wealthiest people, have a total of about $30 billion on deposit in the failing Cypriot banking system. Russia has already given Cyprus a €2.5 billion loan, and talks have been under way for months about additional aid.

Emerging from Wednesday morning’s session, Mr. Sarris reported no progress. “We underscored how difficult the situation is,” he said, “and we will now continue our discussions to find a solution by which we hope we will be getting some support from Russia.”

Russian officials would not comment on the afternoon session but said the meetings were done for the day. A news conference planned at the Cypriot Embassy was canceled on Wednesday afternoon.

Russian leaders, including President Vladimir V. Putin, had reacted furiously to the inclusion of a bank deposit tax in the original bailout proposal, which they said caught them by surprise. Because it is not a member of the euro currency union, Russia was not a party to the bailout deal reached early last Saturday in Brussels by euro zone finance ministers.

Prime Minister Dmitri A. Medvedev of Russia warned Wednesday that the European proposal of a tax on bank deposits could itself precipitate “a new series of local financial crises.”

Mr. Medvedev, speaking to Russian and European journalists at his Gorky residence outside of Moscow, seemed to struggle for words in describing his reaction to the proposed tax on deposits. “I cannot compare it to anything but some decisions made at a certain period of time by the Soviet authorities that did not care much about people’s savings,” he said, according to Russian news agencies.

Mr. Medvedev said the ultimate resolution of the situation in Cyprus could affect relations between Russia and the European Union, which have been in competition to some degree over who will hold more sway over Cyprus’s financial future.

Russia is said to be proposing its own Cypriot bailout deal, on the condition that Nicosia agrees to grant Russia’s energy industry rights to Cyprus’s potentially rich offshore reserves of natural gas. Although Moscow has not acknowledged such a proposal, in a further sign that gas rights might be part of the discussions, the Cypriot energy minister, Georgios Lakkotrypis, was also in Moscow on Wednesday.

In his comments outside the Russian Finance Ministry, Mr. Sarris denied that there had been a specific proposal of help from Gazprom, the giant Russian natural gas producer. “There were no offers — nothing concrete,” he said.

In Nicosia, the troika of lenders is still insisting that Cyprus somehow come up with €5.8 billion of the €10 billion bailout negotiated last weekend. The bank deposits tax, which Parliament voted down overwhelmingly Tuesday along with the bailout plan, was supposed to be the source of the country’s contribution to the bailout package.

The original deal called for a tax of 6.75 percent on deposits of less than €100,000 and 9.9 percent on deposits above that threshold. Even after the Cypriot president, Nicos Anastasiades, revised the terms to exempt depositors with less than €20,000 in their accounts, Parliament rejected the plan.

The proposal that Mr. Anastasiades’s cabinet announced early Wednesday evening calls for coming up with a portion of the €5.8 billion in part by taking over the pension funds of state-run companies, while also issuing additional government bonds. It was unclear late Wednesday how politically viable the pension seizure might be, or how the idea of taking on more debt might fly with the troika representatives.

In a separate and surprising twist on Wednesday, the head of the Church of Cyprus, Archbishop Chrysostomos II, went on television to propose putting all of its properties up as collateral so that the state could issue a new round of government bonds to raise money. The church is one of the largest and most influential investors in Cyprus, with extensive holdings in banks, real estate and other interests.

The archbishop suggested that all of the Church’s dioceses, parishes and monasteries — which are also big investors — could then buy a portion of the bonds to help the country at a time of need.

Describing the church’s holdings as “huge,” without specifying a number, the archbishop said it would “put all its property is in the country’s disposal in order to support the people, avoid the banking collapse and help the country stand on its own feet.”

He said Parliament had made the right decision in rejecting the original bailout terms “and sent a clear message to Europeans that they should learn to respect smaller countries.”

The church is the biggest stakeholder in Hellenic Bank, Cyprus’s third-biggest bank, and one of the biggest shareholders in the largest, the Bank of Cyprus. It owns hotels, extensive swaths of land and a lucrative beverage company, Keo, that produces wines, beers and bottled water and is the biggest importer of Heineken beer.

It was unclear whether the troika would find such a proposal to be part of a viable solution for Cyprus. The moves, however, are a clear sign that Cypriot institutions are trying to figure out ways to reduce the country’s dependence on international lenders and avoid the harsh terms that would be attached to a bailout from them.

My man Gregg Rosenthal has him ranked as the No. 1 player in free agency. My guy Jeff Darlington reports the Miami Dolphins covet Wallace and could be in a potential bidding war with the Minnesota Vikings for the speedster’s services. And both teams certainly are in desperate need of a No. 1 wide receiver.

But I don’t think Wallace is the guy. He’s too inconsistent and unreliable — just not worthy of the mega bucks he will receive.

Think about it. The Pittsburgh Steelers, one of the smartest and classiest organizations in sports, are about to let Wallace walk away. They’ve had enough. That should be a major red flag.

Wallace is all about the money. I don’t think he prioritizes winning. He selfishly held out last year, didn’t make an extra penny and helped derail the Steelers‘ season. Wallace wasn’t part of the offseason programs and didn’t learn new offensive coordinator Todd Haley‘s playbook. He then had an underachieving season filled with a case of the yips.

The San Francisco 49ers needed a receiver last year. They passed on Wallace, then a restricted free agent, and instead used their first-round pick (what would’ve been the compensation) on a project receiver who never played. The New England Patriots also needed a wideout. They wouldn’t do it.

At times, Wallace can be flat-out majestic, with a knack for taking a short pass to the house or streaking down the sideline for a score. But he wants top dollar, and I wonder aloud if he will take the money and just be too satisfied with his paycheck.

8a.m. EDT            March 10, 2013

It’s NASCAR race day at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and we’ve got some essential information you need to get ready for today’s Kobalt Tools 400.

START TIME: A Lowe’s executive will instruct drivers to start their engines at 3:08 Eastern time today (12:08 local), followed by the green flag at 3:16 p.m. So if you want to skip the pre-race show and just tune in for the race, turn on your TV at 3:16.

RACE DISTANCE: The Kobalt Tools 400 is a 400.5-mile race around the 1.5-mile Las Vegas Motor Speedway. That means drivers will need to go 267 laps to complete the full distance.

NATIONAL ANTHEM: Marie Osmond — yes, of the Osmonds — will do the honors today. She is currently starring in a 90-minute Vegas show with her brother, Donny.

TV/RADIO SCHEDULE: FOX will broadcast today’s race and has a pre-race show beginning at 2:30 p.m. ET. The Performance Racing Network (PRN) will call the race on the radio.

WEATHER: Mild and pleasant. The National Weather Service is predicting a sunny desert day with a high of 69 degrees. Rain is not in the forecast.

LAST TIME: Tony Stewart followed up his 2011 championship by scoring a win at Las Vegas just three races into the 2012 season — his first-ever win at the track.

STARTING LINEUP: Since Las Vegas was hit with day-long rain on Friday, qualifying was rained out and the field was set according to the rulebook; in this case, that was last year’s owner points. Brad Keselowski was awarded the pole, and he’ll start alongside Clint Bowyer.

Here’s the starting lineup for Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Las Vegas:

The best start in NHL history is over. The Chicago Blackhawks finally left the ice without a point.

The Blackhawks were stunned 6-2 by the struggling Colorado Avalanche on Friday night. It was their first loss in regulation and ended a remarkable run in which they earned at least one point in their first 24 games, an NHL record.

Matt Duchene scored four points and Ryan O’Reilly got his first goal since his contract dispute was resolved more than a week ago. O’Reilly assisted on another goal in a four-goal onslaught in the second period that turned a 1-1 tie into a laugher.

The Blackhawks (21-1-3) hadn’t lost in regulation since a 6-1 rout by Nashville on March 25, 2012, and their last loss in regulation on the road came more than a year ago, with a 5-1 defeat at St. Louis on March 6, 2012.

Dating back to last year’s regular season, the streak was 30 games.

Chicago’s overall points streak was the second longest in NHL history. The 1979-80 Philadelphia Flyers set the league record with a staggering 35-game unbeaten streak that included 25 wins and 10 ties – all in the same season.

Duchene, John Mitchell and Jamie McGinn also put pucks past Corey Crawford in the second period for the Avalanche, who had lost six of their previous seven, including a 3-2 heartbreaker at Chicago 48 hours earlier.

Crawford (11-1-3) allowed five goals on 19 shots before being replaced in net by Ray Emery to start the third period.

Semyon Varlamov had 30 saves for Colorado.

The Avalanche nearly ended the spectacular streak in Chicago on Wednesday night before the Blackhawks pulled out the win when Daniel Carcillo scored the tiebreaking goal with 49.3 seconds left. Chicago was skating without three key forwards and playing its second game in two nights then.

There was no such comeback Friday night at the Pepsi Center, where a good portion of the sellout crowd was rooting for the Blackhawks, who hadn’t allowed more than four goals in a game this season.

The crowd chanted, “End of streak! End of streak!” over the final minutes.

Bryan Bickell’s goal with 11:07 left made it 5-2. He nearly scored again from the same spot 90 seconds later, but Varlamov smothered the shot.

The teams got into a scuffle with 5:04 left after Bickell squared off with Gabriel Landeskog, who had checked Duncan Keith in the back.

P.A. Parenteau’s 10th goal of the season made it 6-2.

Chicago’s Jonathan Toews got the scoring started when he knocked the puck past Varlamov after a turnover on a give-and-go with forward Marian Hossa, who returned from an upper-body injury.

Colorado (9-10-4) tied it when Paul Stastny, who was between the circles, tipped a pass from Duchene into the net. It was a rare power play goal for the Avalanche, who came into the game ranked 29th in the league with just 82 shots when skating with a man advantage.

Duchene’s goal between Crawford’s legs made it 2-1. Just 33 seconds later, Mitchell scored on an assist from O’Reilly, who was signed to a two-year $10 million deal last week after the Avalanche matched Calgary’s offer sheet following a nasty contract dispute.

O’Reilly’s goal came on a slap shot from the top of the right circle 4 seconds into another power play. Duchene set him up with a pass after Stastny won the faceoff.

Duchene got his third assist when he dug out a loose puck from the boards in a scramble with Keith and kicked it out to McGinn, who put made it 5-1.

The Blackhawks’ run comes with somewhat of an asterisk because they actually lost three games along the way – all in shootouts. Under NHL rules, that’s still worth a point, but that makes it different from what the Flyers accomplished nearly a quarter-century ago.

During that streak, Philadelphia won 25 games and tied 10. There was no overtime until the playoffs, and the shootout was still a far-off creation. If the teams were tied after 60 minutes, that’s how it ended. Each got a point.

Nowadays, both teams still receive a point if the game is tied at the end of regulation. Then, the team that scores in a five-minute, four-skaters-a-side overtime period or wins the shootout gets an extra point.

NOTES: Avalanche defenseman Erik Johnson returned to the lineup after missing 11 games with a head injury. … Chicago RW Michael Frolik returned from an illness that sidelined him for two games. … The Blackhawks were without forward Patrick Sharp, who left Wednesday’s home win over the Avalanche with a shoulder injury after being checked along the boards by Colorado’s Ryan O’Byrne. … The Avalanche matched their season high for goals.

March 7, 2013                    8:50am

Wednesday Todd McShay of ESPN released a mock draft and pegged Tyler Eifert as the first round pick for the New York Giants and even though the pick is unpopular here Eifert is a player worth looking at because the possibility exists that Eifert, who is considered a consensus first-round pick, could be a Giant next year.

Pros

Good size at 6-foot-6, 251 pounds. Eifert is terrific at pin-pointing the football at its highest point and coming down with it, which makes him an excellent red-zone option in the NFL. He’s very good catching the football in traffic and will catch the football even when he’s going to take a big hit. There were some concerns about his athleticism, but he put those to rest at the combine, where he was top performer at every single drill in the tight end group, showcasing terrific athleticism. A good route runner. Eifert was very productive at Notre Dame, and is a high character guy who gives his all as a receiver and blocker. He has great hands.

Cons

A willing blocker with good length to be a very good blocker, but he is just not there yet. He has good speed for his size, but he doesn’t have great straight line speed.

Player comparison: Greg Olsen (NFl.com), Kyle Rudolph (a number of places); Todd Heap (me)

Does He Fit With The Giants?

Yeah, I think he’s a good fit for the Giants. He’s not a great blocker now, but here’s something that most people don’t tell you: very few top rookie tight ends enter the league knowing how to block effectively at the NFL level.

Final Thought

After watching more Eifert I’m less lukewarm on him than I was before, and he’ll likely be entering the top 32 on my next big board projection. I prefer him a lot to Coby Fleener last year. Eifert was more athletic than I thought he would be at the combine, and he’s a better blocker than I had previously given him credit for; he is not a great blocker now, but he’s a hard worker and I think he’ll get there. I think the Giants will go a different direction than Eifert at 19, but you can see the appeal, especially with his ability to win jump balls and make plays in traffic — that’s what separates him from many tight end prospects.

DeAndre Hopkins may have solidified himself as a first-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft during Clemson Pro Day on Thursday. Unofficially, he clocked in at 4.5 and a 4.41 in his two attempts at the 40-yard dash, which is a considerable improvement over the 4.57 he ran at the 2013 NFL Combine.

Hopkins is projected to go No. 12 overall to the Miami Dolphins, according to SB Nation’s latest mock draft, due to his combination of size, body control and impeccable hands. Speed wasn’t considered a particular strength until Hopkins proved Thursday that he has some jets. Unsurprisingly, he also performed well in position drills.

Pauline was also impressed with defensive lineman Malliciah Goodman during drills. He didn’t participate in the bench press after putting up 26 reps of 225 pounds in Indianapolis. Goodman ran the 40, however, and unofficially posted a blistering time of 4.52 seconds. If that time is accurate, he could be making a big move up draft boards. Goodman wasn’t exceptionally productive in college, but an NFL team may be willing to take a chance on his raw potential.

Jaron Brown reportedly ran the fastest 40 time of the day, clocking in at 4.29 seconds. He wasn’t targeted often last season next to Hopkins, but his speed and 6’2 height make him an intriguing prospect.

The Tigers’ third combine participant, running back Andre Ellington, did not take part in Thursday’s Pro Day, and will instead hold his own separate workout on March 29.
