PHOTO: Micah True, 60, an accomplished ultrarunner featured in the best-selling book "Born To Run," has been missing in New Mexico?s Gila National Forest since Tuesday.

March 31, 2012

They call him Caballo Blanco, the White Horse.

Ultrarunner Micah True, 60, is a legend in the distance running community. He was depicted in Christopher McDougall’s best-selling book, “Born to Run,” in which he took up residence in the remote Copper Canyons of Mexico among the Tarahumara, a desert-dwelling tribe of the best ultrarunners in the world who gave him the moniker.

But True mysteriously disappeared last Tuesday after leaving for what was supposed to be a 12-mile run in southwest New Mexico’s Gila National Forest. Search efforts that were launched on Wednesday have ramped up across the region, The Associated Press reported.

Some 14 search teams — complete with people on horseback, dogs, helicopters and a search plane — set out Friday to find True, and they were joined by hordes of extra volunteers today, New Mexico state police told the AP.

“We’re going to do everything possible to cover as much ground as possible, but it’s already been four days,” state police spokesman Lt. Robert McDonald told the AP. “By no means are we going to give up, but time is of the essence as always in a search and rescue effort.”

True, who lives in Denver, had spent the night at theWilderness Lodge in Gila Hot Springs, N.M., and went running Tuesday morning wearing shorts, a T-shirt and hat and carrying one water bottle, according to Jane Bruemmer, the lodge’s co-owner.

“He goes for a run every day, so it’s not unusual,” she told ABCNews.com. “We just don’t think he had much with him, since he was planning on coming home. We’re perplexed.”

Since True spends part of the year in Urique, Mexico, where he is the race director of the Copper Canyon Ultra Marathon, a 50-mile race across the desert, Bruemmer says he often stays at her lodge while en route to and from Mexico. He runs frequently among the cliff dwellings of the Gila National Forest.

Before True went missing, Bruemmer and her husband were heading to Silver City, N.M., a town about 40 miles away from the lodge, but True had planned to stay until Wednesday, when he was to depart for Phoenix to visit his girlfriend. So the couple bid him goodbye, leaving a friend to watch the lodge while they were away, Bruemmer said.

But the friend told the Bruemmers that True never returned from his run on Tuesday, and that “the guests were worried,” she said. So she and her husband, Dean, called the state police Wednesday morning, and they launched a search in the area, where the temperature can drop below freezing at night.

True had left his dog at the lodge, since he would be running north along Highway 15, which dead-ends at the cliff dwellings, Bruemmer said.

“We don’t know where he was from then on,” she said. “We’re assuming he went off-trail. But this is a huge wilderness.”

Bruemmer said she’s received lots of calls and emails from the ultrarunning community, offering their help with the search, and True’s girlfriend also arrived from Phoenix to join the effort.

True wasn’t known to have any health problems, and Bruemmer suspects he may have become injured. But the search parties “have gone over and over these trails, and on really obscure trails that are barely there anymore,” she said.

People have been known to get lost in the Gila National Forest, because it’s a wilderness area, “so you can get turned around,” she said. “But I wouldn’t have thought it would happen to Micah.”

March 22, 2012        10:27 a.m.

Sanford, Fla., on Thursday braced for what could be its biggest day of demonstrations over the death of Trayvon Martin, the black teenager shot by a neighborhood watch officer, George Zimmerman, last month. For those just catching up to the case that has galvanized the nation — raising legal and social issues about race, guns and self-defense — here’s some background.

What do we know?

The first phase of the case happened the night of Feb. 26.

Martin, 17, was walking back to his father’s house in a gated community in Sanford, a suburb of Orlando, Fla. He had bought a package of Skittles and an iced tea from a convenience store in the city of about 53,000 residents. A majority of the city’s residents are white; just under a third are black.

Zimmerman, 28, was patrolling the neighborhood when he saw Martin. He called police to report his suspicions and then followed the teenager, though police recordings quote the dispatcher as saying he should stay away.

Moments later, Zimmerman — identified as a Latino by his family, and as white by critics of the subsequent investigation — was in a confrontation with Martin, ultimately shooting the unarmed teenager once, killing him.

What happened next?

The controversy begins with the second phase — the aftermath of the shooting.

Local police responded to the incident and questioned Zimmerman; authorities did medical tests on the dead teenager but not on Zimmerman.

According to various reports, police say Zimmerman told them he chased Martin but gave up and was returning to his truck when the teenager attacked him. Police say Zimmerman had blood on the back of his head.

Zimmerman, who is claiming self-defense, was released and has not been charged in the shooting.

What is the family’s position?

The family, backed by national and local civil rights leaders, say that Martin was in danger — as is any other African American teenager out alone after dark, they add. Because of his race, Martin immediately appeared suspicious to a white person on patrol, especially one whose training was far less than that received by professional police.

Further, the family insists, if a black officer had shot a white teen, he would have been charged and held  — and drug and alcohol tests would have been carried out on the officer and not just the victim, who in this case was drug-free.

“They are making it look like Zimmerman is the victim,” Benjamin Crump, attorney for Martin’s parents said of the police, according to several media interviews. “And their son is in the grave. It’s about equal justice.”

What is the local police position?

Police insist they investigated and let Zimmerman go because officers were “prohibited from making an arrest based on the facts and circumstances they had at the time,” including the physical evidence.

“The Sanford Police Department has conducted a complete and fair investigation of this incident,”police chief Bill Lee said in a prepared statement.

What happens next is up to prosecutors who have convened a grand jury for April 10.

What is the law regarding self-defense?

Florida is one of 21 states with some form of a stand-your-ground law allows people to legally use deadly force if they fear for their life.

In general, the laws, backed by gun rights advocates, allow a person to stay and fight rather than flee a confrontation. The laws have different requirements, depending on the state. Some specify that the shooter has to have a legal weapon and has to have a right to be where he or she is.

It will be up to the grand jury to determine if Zimmerman’s self-defense claim meets Florida’s legal tests, including whether Zimmerman had reason to fear for his life during the confrontation.

The Florida version of the law, backed with the support of the National Rifle Assn., was passed in 2005.  According to the Associated Press, Florida Department of Law Enforcement statistics show that, before the law was enacted, there were about 13 so-called justified killings each year by citizens from 2000 to 2005. Between 2006 and 2010, the average has risen to 36 justified killings each year.

Some state lawmakers have already begun to question whether the Florida law is too broad, saying they’re considering legislation that would redefine the grounds under which self-defense could be claimed. Republican Gov. Rick Scott, a conservative elected after the law was passed, told reporters this week he’s open to changes if the Martin case shows there are problems.

What is the federal angle?

Martin’s parents and the Rev. Al Sharpton, the civil rights leader and television personality,  have met with federal officials including the U.S. attorney for the area. Federal officials are investigating the incident to see if there was a hate crime that would allow them to prosecute.

March 21, 2012

An explosion of social media has catapulted the shooting death of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin into the national spot light, with a single petition calling for his killer’s arrest now the fastest growing petition in internet history, according to Change.org.

Martin, 17, was killed by self-appointed neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman Feb. 26. Just moments before Martin is killed, Zimmerman, who is white, can be heard muttering something in a call to the police dispatcher which many believe was a racial epithet.

Martin, who was black, was carrying only a bag of skittles, ice tea and his cell phone which captured his last seconds in a phone call with his girlfriend before he was shot to death.

Martin’s family says that what the girl heard contradicts Zimmerman’s claim that Martin was acting suspiciously and was the aggressor in their confrontation.

The family has called for Zimmerman to be arrested.

For nearly three weeks the story languished, as did the change.org petition set up for Martin’s parents Sybrina Fulton and Tracey Martin. It had a few thousand signatures, but towards the end of last week, as ABCnews.com other media began intensifying their coverage of the story and celebrities tweeted about it, interest in the story soared.

A host of celebrities from hip hop icon and entrepreneur Russell Simmons to new age leader Deepak Chopra to director Spike Lee have written and tweeted calling for justice for Martin.

Some celebs used their pulpits to drum up awareness while others issued warnings, with Simmons tweeting this last week : “Trayvon Martin didn’t die so we can create a race war he died so we can promote better understanding. We must start honest dialogue.”

Black radio and television hosts have also bouyed the story, calling on authorities to act.

Amid the growing chorus of statements, Florida authorities announced that they would convene a grand jury and the Department of Justice said they would investigate Martin’s shooting as a possible hate crime.

The growing support for the Martin family is seen in the accelerating pace of signatures on the Martin family’s Change.org petition to have Zimmerman arrested.

“The explosive petition to bring justice for Trayvon Martin was started just days ago by his parents and is already the all time fastest-growing petition on Change.org,” the group told ABC News today. “With up to 800 people signing per minute, and 250,000 petition signatures since yesterday morning, the growth is unprecedented.”

So far, nearly 800,000 people have signed the petition.

There are 15,000 petitions launched on Change.org every month, the statement said.

“People worldwide are shocked by Trayvon’s killing, and they’re turning to social media like Change.org and Twitter to turn that outrage into action,” the statement said.

Benjamin Walt-Jaffee of Change.org told ABC News that unlike Facebook, Twitter or Youtube, where a simple click of like indicates support, the signatories of the petition must provide their full name, a functioning email address and home address for their signature to be counted.

The Illinois Lottery says a grand prize Mega Millions winning ticket was sold at a store in Red Bud, Ill., southeast of St. Louis.

This winner, who won with a quick pick ticket according to Illinois lottery officials, is the largest lottery winner in Illinois history at $213.3 million, according to the Illinois Lottery. Red Bud is a community of about 3,700 in Randolph County in southwestern Illinois.

The person who bought the winning ticket at the Moto Mart in Red Bud hasn’t been publicly identified yet, but speculation is running wild, said Denise Metzger, the manager of the gas station and convenience store.

“Everybody’s got their guess,” said Metzger, who spent her morning talking to media outlets including the “Today” show and the BBC. “They’re all kind of watching who’s having a party, checking out who’s having a party in town today.”

Metzger estimated that a third of the town’s residents had stopped by the store this morning.

“The energy here has just been unbelievable,” she said. “Everybody is just really hyped up about this.”

Metzger said the town welcomed the attention, but she hopes the winner was one of the store’s regulars.

“I just think it’s fabulous that it’s happened somewhere small like Red Bud,” she said. “It”s a great boost for this community. I just hope we sold that ticket to that loyal customer who came in and got coffee every day.”

Local paramedic Dan Parrott walked away from the Red Bud store with only $5 in winnings after checking his $40 worth of tickets, not enough for that new house, new car and the new ambulances he’d decided would help him spend the jackpot.

“I’d love to have all that money, but with all of that money comes responsibility,” he said outside the store. “But it’d still be awesome.”

The total $640 million jackpot, largest in the 42-state game’s history, was split among winning tickets in Illinois, Maryland and Kansas, according to the Associated Press.

The winning numbers were 2, 4, 23, 38, 46 and Mega Ball 23.

Twelve second-place tickets were sold in Illinois last night, matching five numbers for $250,000. One ticket had the “Megaplier” feature, upping the prize to $1 million, the agency said.

The $1 million ticket was sold at the 7-Eleven at 1750 West Foster Avenue in Chicago, and other second-place tickets were sold at DM Stores at 222 North LaSalle Street in Chicago, AG 26th Inc. at 3201 W. 26th Street in Chicago, a Jewel on Eola Road in Aurora, a 7-Eleven on Barrington Road in Streamwood, a BP Fast n Fresh on Monee Road in Monee, and stores in East Peoria, Granite City, Minooka, Rochelle, DeKalb, and Rockford.

The estimated jackpot dwarfs the previous $390 million record, which was split in 2007 by two winners who bought tickets in Georgia and New Jersey.

Americans spent nearly $1.5 billion for a chance to hit the jackpot, which amounts to a $462 million lump sum and around $347 million after federal tax withholding. With the jackpot odds at 1 in 176 million, it would cost $176 million to buy up every combination. Under that scenario, the strategy would win $171 million less if your state also withholds taxes.

In Maryland, television cameras were descending on the 7-Eleven in Baltimore Countywhere the state’s winning ticket was purchased. The harried manager could only repeatedly say “No interviews” to the reporters pressing for details, and customers pushed through the media crush for their morning coffee on Saturday.

Nyeri Murphy, holding two scratch-off tickets, said she normally plays Powerball but drove to neighboring Harford County to buy $70 worth of Mega Millions tickets this week. “I should have bought them here,” she said.

None of Jackie Williams’ tickets won, either, but she said it was “fabulous” that a winning ticket was sold near Baltimore city.

“It’s like a small town,” she said. “I’ll bet I’ll know someone who knows the winner.”

Maryland does not require lottery winners to be identified; the Mega Millions winner can claim the prize anonymously. The store will receive a $100,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket, which was purchased Friday night.

The third winning ticket was purchased in northeast Kansas, but no other information would be released by the Kansas Lottery until the winner comes forward, spokeswoman Cara S. Sloan-Ramos said.

No winner had contacted the agency by Saturday morning, Kansas Lottery Director Dennis Wilson said. “Hopefully they’re seeking good advice before coming in,” he said.

Kansas law also allows lottery winners to remain anonymous, though lottery winners in Illinois are identified.

Natasha Alam: Playboy cover – Alam celebrated her addition to the cast of vampire series True Blood by baring it all for Playboy magazine.

The actress graces the cover of the July 2010 issue of the men’s magazine and peels off inside.

The spread marks the second time Alam has stripped for the cameras – her nude scene debut came on the show, in which she’ll play a sexy dancer at the Fangtasia club owned by Alexander Skarsgard’s True Blood character Eric Northman.

Skarsgard gets naked in the scene, too.

And she tells AccessHollywood.com the big reveal on TV was much more nerve-wracking than her Playboy shoot: “When we shot it, I just had a baby. I actually am about 10 pounds overweight in that scene, but I love my boobs! I was still breast feeding so it looked great.

“I had never done nudity before, so I was really, really worried… Alexander helped me so much – he just walked in the room, dropped his robe and he was all out there, no sock, nothing and I was like, ‘Oh, OK… I can do it too.'”

And Alam is thrilled with her new Playboy spread, adding, “I wanted to be in Playboy since… As an actress, it was my dream. My publicist called and (asked) if (I wanted) do it and she was like, ‘I don’t know if we should do it,’ and I was like, ‘Yes!’ I love it.”

A record $540 million Mega Millions lottery jackpot could be won Friday.

March 31, 2012

Record Mega Millions Numbers: 2-4-23-38-46, MB 23

Across the country, Americans plunked down an estimated $1.5 billion on the longest of long shots: an infinitesimally small chance to win what could end up being the single biggest lottery payout the world has ever seen.

The numbers drawn Friday night in Atlanta were 2-4-23-38-46, Mega Ball 23. Lottery officials expected to release details about possible winners a couple of hours after the 11 p.m. Eastern drawing.

Forget about how the $640 million Mega Millions jackpot could change the life of the winner. It’s a collective wager that could fund a presidential campaign several times over, make a dent in struggling state budgets or take away the gas worries and grocery bills for thousands of middle-class citizens.

And it’s a cheap investment for the chance of a big reward, no matter how long the odds — 1 in 176 million.

“Twenty to thirty dollars won’t hurt,” said Elvira Bakken of Las Vegas. “I think it just gives us a chance of maybe winning our dream.”

So what exactly would happen if the country spent that $1.5 billion on something other than a distant dream?

For starters, it could cure the everyday worries of hundreds of thousands of American families hit by the Great Recession. It costs an average of $6,129 to feed the typical family for a year — meaning the cash spent on tickets could fill up the plates of 238,000 households.

As gas prices climb faster than stations can change the numbers on the signs, the money spent on tickets could fill the tanks of 685,000 households annually.

Or it could play politics. So far in this campaign, Republicans and President Barack Obama have spent $348.5 million. The amount spent on Mega Millions tickets could cover that tab four times over.

Could the money dig governments out of debt? That’s a problem that even staggering ticket sales can’t solve. It could trim this year’s expected $1.3 trillion federal deficit by just over a tenth of 1 percent. In Illinois, the money would disappear just as fast into that state’s $8 billion deficit.

On a personal level, that much money staggers. Giving $1.46 billion to a broker could purchase 2.4 million shares of Apple stock. (It would also be enough to buy about 2.4 million iPads at the starting price of $499. That’s almost as many as the 3 million new iPads that Apple has already sold.)

Or consider the whimsical: A family of up to 12 could live for more than a century at Musha Cay, magician David Copperfield’s $37,000-a-night private island resort in the Exuma Cays of the Caribbean.

For a more celestial vacation, the nearly $1.5 billion wagered could purchase about 7,300 tourist tickets for a ride into space aboard Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo. And it would pay for 26 rides for U.S. astronauts to the International Space Station aboard the Russian Soyuz spacecraft.

It would even buy a stake in pop culture. Want to influence the next winner of American Idol? If it costs a quarter to text in a vote to Ryan Seacrest, and it takes 122 million votes to win as it did last season, the money could control the outcome of the next 47 seasons.

For the states that participate, the money spent on lotto tickets is hardly a waste. It doesn’t all end up as the winner’s personal fortune — much of it is used by states to fund education and other social service programs, which is why advocates promote the lottery.

Though the specifics vary among the 42 participating states and the District of Columbia, only about half of ticket sales go into the actual jackpot. Another 35 percent goes to support government services and programs, while the rest funds lottery operating costs.

On Friday, the lottery estimated that total ticket sales for this jackpot, which has been building up since Jan. 28, will be about $1.46 billion, said Kelly Cripe, a spokeswoman for the Texas Lottery Commission.

You’re about 20,000 times more likely to die in a car crash than win the lottery, but that doesn’t matter to most people.

“Part of it is hope. … The average person basically has no chance of making it really big, and buying a lottery ticket is a way of raising the ceiling on what could possibly happen to you, however unlikely it may be,” said George Loewenstein, a professor of economics and psychology at Carnegie Mellon University who has studied how rich and poor consumers make a choice to buy lottery tickets.

The odds are much better that someone will begin their weekend a winner. Aaron Abrams, a mathematician at Emory University, said he calculated that there was only a 6 percent chance that no one would hold the winning numbers.

“Every time the jackpot gets higher, more and more people buy tickets, which makes it more and more likely that someone will win,” Abrams said. “So the chance that it rolls over this many times in a row is very small. It’s quite a rare event.”

The estimated jackpot dwarfs the previous $390 million record, which was split in 2007 by two winners who bought tickets in Georgia and New Jersey.

The rarity of Friday’s jackpot was fueling the fervor. Lines formed at grocery stores, gas stations, liquor stops and other venues across the country.

In Arizona, a café worker reported selling $2,600 worth of tickets to one buyer. In Indiana, hundreds lined up for a giveaway of free tickets. Hundreds from Utah and Las Vegas streamed in to neighboring California or Arizona to buy tickets because their states don’t participate.

Accountant Ray Lousteau, who bought 55 Mega Millions tickets Friday in New Orleans, knows buying that many tickets doesn’t mathematically increase his odds, and that his $55 could have gone elsewhere. He spent it anyway.

“Mathematically, it doesn’t make a difference, and intellectually we know that. But for some reason buying more tickets makes you feel more lucky,” Lousteau said. “Even people who know better are apt to feel that way.”

In Chicago, Peter Muiznieks bought a ticket at a liquor store. He knows his chance of winning is a long shot, and that the money the country is spending on tickets could go elsewhere. He still couldn’t help himself, and laughed as the apparent contradiction of his opinion and his actions.

“Lottery and games of chance are a stupidity tax and the more we all buy into this, the less rational we are as a society,” he said.

After all the hype, there was disappointment in California but joy in Maryland, Kansas and Illinois, where winning Mega Millions tickets were sold for the record $640-million jackpot.

There was a silver lining for California. Twenty-nine tickets sold in the state had five of the numbers and were expected to pay off in the high hundreds of thousands of dollars, said Russ Lopez, a spokesman for the California Lottery, which monitors the game in the state.

Nine of the 29 tickets were sold in Los Angeles County — five in Los Angeles, and one each in Montebello, Long Beach, Hawthorne and El Monte. A five-number ticket was also sold in Anaheim.

Southern Californians wanting in on the historic — if astronomically small — chance to be fabulously wealthy waited in lines for as long as five hours to get a stake in the dream, but many were turned away as their chance of getting to the cash register by Friday’s 7:45 p.m. cutoff closed in.

Thousands of Nevadans drove to neighboring states to get in on the action, because Nevada doesn’t participate in the massive twice-weekly gamble.

According to the Associated Press, Illinois’ winning ticket was sold in the small town of Red Bud, near St. Louis. The winner used a quick pick to select the numbers, Illinois Lottery spokesman Mike Lang said. The Maryland Lottery said it sold a winning ticket at a retail store in Baltimore County. A winning ticket also was purchased in northeast Kansas, according to the Kansas Lottery website, AP said.

The winning numbers were 2-4-23-38-46, and the Mega Ball was 23.

Lottery officials had estimated that there was a 95% chance someone would win the jackpot Friday.

File:San Onofre NPP cropped.jpgSan Onofre nuclear plant

March 30, 2012

Concern over the safety of the San Onofre nuclear power plant is growing among Orange County cities closest to the facility, which has been shut down since January because of system failures.

Officials in nearby San Clemente and Laguna Beach — both within 20 miles of the San Onofre facility — have registered their fears after significant wear was found on hundreds of tubes carrying radioactive water inside the plant’s generators.

Residents in the Orange County beach towns for years have lived with the twin-domed nuclear plant as a backdrop. In San Clemente, which falls within the plant’s 10-mile evacuation zone, city-issued potassium iodide tablets and siren drills have become a fact of life.

But with scenes of the nuclear disaster in Japan fresh in people’s minds, the recent closure has raised consciousness about nuclear issues and prompted critics to double down on their disapproval.

Some city officials are now calling for the decommissioning of the San Onofre site. The plant’s license is set to expire in 2022.

“The plant should be shut down, period,” said Verna Rollinger, mayor pro tem in Laguna Beach. “I have never supported it, and I wish nuclear energy was safe because it’s a relatively clean energy source, but it’s also so dangerous that I don’t think we should be counting on that for our future energy needs.”

She added: “I think people are concerned, and for good reason.”

The mayor of San Clemente, Lori Donchak, wrote to federal officials asking that they demand a permanent disposal place for spent nuclear fuel, and others have asked that they consider expanding the evacuation zone beyond the current 10-mile radius.

Federal regulatory officials said the facility remains safe and the process to repair the damaged tubes is part of the effort to ensure those living nearby aren’t endangered.

“San Onofre is being operated safely — that’s the bottom line,” said Victor Dricks, a spokesman for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

But now that the facility has been off-line for some time, with power still flowing to homes and businesses without interruption, some have asked why it needs to come back into service. “The question is,” Rollinger said, “how difficult would it be to go without it?”

Southern California Edison, which operates the San Onofre facility, said San Onofre is vital to providing electricity to a densely populated, high-consuming area like Southern California, with 20% of the region’s electricity coming from nuclear plants.

“San Onofre is critical to that grid stability,” said Jennifer Manfrey, a company spokeswoman, who added that the company is making up for the difference by purchasing power from different sources on the market — a solution that can’t continue indefinitely, particularly with the increase in consumption in the summer months. Other clean energy sources, such as wind and solar, aren’t enough to close the gap.

But Marion Pack, a political organizer who opposes the facility, said the price for that energy source remains too high. “When you have to have all these safety measures,” she said, “it says to me there is an inherent danger.”

The Cincinnati Bengals cheerleading captain may have to trade her pom poms for handcuffs after she was slapped with charges of sex abuse of a former student.

Sarah Jones, an ex-teacher and current member of the Ben-Gals cheerleading squad was charged today with sex abuse for allegedly bedding a student.

Jones, 26, was charged with sexual abuse and unlawful use of electronic devices to solicit illegal activity.

Legal case: Jones was the subject of a defamation case in 2009, when she sued TheDirty.com for publishing photos of her with comments that she ‘had two STDs’ and had sex in her classroom

If convicted, she faces up to 10 years in prison.

Jones has been a member of the Ben-Gals squad for five years and, until last year, was a ninth grade English teacher at Dixie Heights High School in Edgewood, Kentucky.

She resigned from her teaching job on November 30, citing ‘personal reasons’.

Cincinnati.com reported that Jones’ mother, Cheryl Jones, was also indicted today for tampering with evidence in her daughter’s sex abuse case.

Cheryl Jones is a principal at the Twenhofel Middle School in Independence, Kentucky, a school in the same school district as her daughter’s former school.

They both plan to plead not guilty, according to their lawyer, Charles Lester Jr.

Mr Lester said in a statement to The Cincinnati Enquirer: ‘Sarah has maintained her innocence. The indictment of her mother is completely baseless’.

The Bengals organisation would not comment on the case.

Jones’ mother Cheryl, left, a principal at another high school in the district, was also indicted today and charged with obstructing the case against her daughter

Sarah Jones grabbed headlines in 2009 when she became the subject of what she claimed was a lurid smear campaign when photos of her appeared on TheDirty.com with comments that branded her a ‘slut’ who ‘had two STDs’.

Jones claimed she postings cost her her reputation with colleagues at the school after it was alleged that she had sex in her classroom.

But even after she emailed the site pleading that the photos be taken down, more appeared, with new posts claiming she had sex with Bengals players.

Denial: Jones' attorney said that both she and her mother will plead not guilty

Appearing on ABC News around the time of the scandal, she said: ‘To stand in front of 30 15-year-olds and tell them you don’t have two STDs and that you are not a slut is the hardest thing you will ever have to do’.

Ms Jones sued Nik Richie, TheDirty.com’s founder, for character defamation – and she was awarded an $11million default judgement, but the litigation is ongoing.

Jennifer Lawrence is an expert survivor.

The 21-year-old now-superstar has risen to fame on the strength of two tough girl films, in 2010’s Winter’s Bone and this month’s mega-hit, The Hunger Games. She traversed the freezing Appalachians in the former, and a battle royale, teenage death match arena in the latter movie. In between filming the two, she made a genre horror film that, yes, featured her fighting for her life.

In The House at the End of the Street, Lawrence plays a teen who, with her mother (Elizabeth Shue) moves into the house next to a home where a double homicide had taken place. She strikes up a friendship with the surviving son, played by Max Theriot, which leads to all sorts of complications of the deadly variety.

While this is a small indie, Lawrence looks primed to cash in on the success of The Hunger Games, with a big pay bump in her future.

Hunger Games co-star Josh Hutcherson also has a smaller film releasing soon to piggyback on the blockbuster’s success, as his Samuel Goldwyn film Detention will hit theaters in April.

The movie, from Relativity, opens in theaters nationwide on September 21st, 2012.

March 28, 2012, 8:29 a.m.

A Jet Blue pilot who began ranting and acting erratically as his flight headed from New York to Las Vegas — forcing the co-pilot to lock him out of the cockpit and make an emergency landing — has been described as a seemingly content family man who once hoped to be an astronaut.

Jet Blue identified the pilot as Clayton Osbon, who lives in Georgia but who maintains an apartment in the New York City borough of Queens because his flying base is New York. In a statement Tuesday night, it said that the captain of Flight 191 was receiving medical treatment.

The flight landed in Las Vegas at 4:13 p.m. local time Tuesday after initially making an emergency landing in Amarillo, Texas, where the captain was removed from the flight after having been tackled by passengers and strapped down with their belts. “While we don’t know what led to the incident, what we can verify is that the pilot in command elected to divert to Amarillo to ensure the captain received proper medical attention, and we know the captain was then transferred to a medical facility,” Jet Blue said.

Video posted on YouTube clearly showed the pilot in the Airbus 320’s aisle as he first spoke to flight attendants who had been alerted to a problem by the co-pilot. The co-pilot managed to persuade the pilot to leave the cockpit, then quickly locked him out of the cockpit and changed the security code to prevent the captain from re-entering.

As the co-pilot declared an emergency and made plans to land in Amarillo, chaos erupted in the jet’s cabin, according to passengers’ accounts and video taken by several people on board. “The pilot ran to the cockpit door, began banging on it and said something to the effect of, ‘We’ve gotta pull the throttle back. We’ve gotta get this plane down,'” said Laurie Dhue, on CNN.

At one point, the pilot is heard screaming, “Oh my God! I’m so distraught! We’ve got Israel, we’ve got Iraq…”

Passengers leaped on top of the pilot after a flight attendant called for help; according to the New York ABC affiliate, many of those on board were security professionals headed to Las Vegas for a convention, which enabled them to effectively use a choke-hold to subdue the captain and restrain him for more than 20 minutes.

In Queens, where the pilot rents a room to use before and after flights, neighbors were shocked. His landlord, Wanda Serra, broke down in tears when told that Osbon was the man on the video. “I feel like he’s a son,” she told ABC, describing him as a “beautiful man.” Others in the area agreed.

“Things happen, but I would never have expected it from a guy like that, something got to him,” said John Morganti, a resident.

According to a 2011 profile published about Osbon in a Georgia magazine,  he received a bachelor of science degree in aeronautical physics and all of his flight ratings from Hawthorne College and Carnegie Mellon University. Clayton considered joining the Navy to pay for postgraduate studies and hoped to fly the F-14 jets made famous in the movie “Top Gun”; but he said an astigmatism in his right eye ruled him out.

“That broke my heart a little bit,” he told the interviewer, Chrstine Lucas, who expressed surprise at what had happened. “My opinion is that someone who would rant would be in a discontented position; he didn’t strike me that way at all — he seemed very content about his life and where it was going. He didn’t seem at all unhappy,” she told Fox news.

This is the second troubling incident involving a flight crew member on a major airline this month. On March 9, an American Airlines jet returned to the gate in Dallas after an attendant let out a bloodcurdling scream and began ranting about a crash as the plane prepared to take off. In 2010, Jet Blue flight attendant Steven Slater gained folk-hero status after he cussed out a passenger while the plane was on a runway at JFK airport in New York, then grabbed a beer, deployed an emergency chute, and slid down it.

Slater was arrested and charged with criminal mischief and reckless endangerment. Slater, who left Jet Blue, later apologized, blaming his rant on stress, and paid restitution after pleading guilty to lesser charges.

Elgin platform gas leak: Work ‘could take six months’ says Total

The BBC’s Colin Blane: “It is a serious, uncontrolled leak”

Oil company Total has revealed it could take six months to drill a relief well to stop the gas leak on its Elgin platform in the North Sea.

The company is looking at several options to stem the flow of gas following Sunday’s incident.

Jake Molloy, of the RMT union, said the potential remained for “catastrophic devastation”.

Exclusion zones have been put in place around the platform. Shell also announced a shutdown of a platform.

The Scottish government said ministers were being kept “fully informed of developments”.

A cloud of gas was reported to be surrounding the platform, which is located 150 miles (240km) off Aberdeen.

Coastguards said shipping was being ordered to keep at least two miles away and there was a three-mile exclusion zone for aircraft.

Shell has moved 120 non-essential staff from the Shearwater platform and Hans Deul drilling rig, about four miles from the Elgin, because of the drifting gas.

The oil giant said the move was a “precautionary measure”.

Location map

Shell later said: “Further to the precautionary safety measures we took yesterday following Total’s gas leak at Elgin, we have now brought forward plans to carry out maintenance at Shearwater.

“This will take place from today, starting four days ahead of schedule. We are therefore shutting down production in a controlled manner.”

Human side

Total, which operates the Elgin platform, said the situation was stable but it had not yet been able to identify the source of the leak.

A sheen of between two and 23 tonnes of gas condensate, measuring six nautical miles in length, has been reported on the water nearby, and Total has activated its Oil Pollution Emergency Plan.

Jake Molloy, of the RMT union which represents offshore workers, was asked if the incident was the most serious in the North Sea since the 1988 Piper Alpha oil platform tragedy which saw 167 men die.

He told BBC Scotland: “Fortunately we have dealt with the human side of it, but the potential exists for catastrophic devastation.

“If it somehow finds an ignition source we could be looking at complete destruction.”

Wullie Wallce, of the Unite union, called for a full evacuation and power down of all oil platforms within a five-mile radius of the incident.

He said: “The risk may be low but our concern is that if the drifting gas was to hit any of the neighbouring installations the results could be catastrophic.

“We would call on the oil and gas industry and the Health and Safety Executive not to take any chances here.”

David Hainsworth, health, safety and environment manager for Total E&P UK, told BBC Scotland’s Good Morning Scotland programmme the situation was “stable” and there had been no major change overnight.

He said: “We’ve been monitoring overnight. There seems to be no evolution in the rate of gas release.

“The area was over-flown twice yesterday by spotter planes to look at the sheen on the sea – that is about the same, at six nautical miles in length.”

Mr Hainsworth said all the power was turned off when the platform was evacuated to minimise the risk of igniting an explosion.

He added: “Clearly there is a risk of ignition and a fire.

“We’ve taken away all the usual sources of ignition such as electrical power but yes there is a possibility.

“We believe it is low but you never say never.”

Mr Hainsworth said they were evaluating the options for dealing with the leak.

Options include drilling a relief well, and another possibility could be to carry out a “dynamic kill” – pumping heavy mud into the well to suppress the flow of gas.

‘Very deep’

Mr Hainsworth said there was a possibility that the leak could stop of its own accord.

He said: “I would say the best case scenario is that the gas is not very productive from this area and that it dies off over the coming days and weeks.”

Dr Simon Boxall, an oceanographer at Southampton University, told BBC Scotland that this was not a deepwater drilling rig and platform but it was unusual in that they were drilling down 5km (3.1 miles) into the sea bed.

He said: “It is a very deep well. The gas they are bringing up is what we call sour gas.

“That gas has a high proportion of hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide and that makes it very flammable and quite poisonous.

“So the big problem they have got is dealing with a very combustible gas – unlike Deepwater Horizon where we were dealing with crude oil which ironically is very difficult to light sometimes.”

‘Complete transparency’

All 238 workers were removed from the Elgin installation and the nearby Rowan Viking drilling rig by helicopter on Sunday.

The UK Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has been monitoring the situation and said there was no indication of a risk of significant pollution to the environment.

RSPB Scotland called for “complete transparency” from Total.

Stuart Housden, director of RSPB Scotland, said: “We hope that, second to minimising risks to people, environmental considerations will be foremost in the mind of Total when considering their response to this situation.

“We urgently need to know exactly what environmental impacts the leaking substances could have.”

According to reports, the gas cloud surrounding the platform and accompanying sheen contains between two and 23 tonnes of gas condensate, measuring six nautical miles in length.

Bellona is deeply concerned about the gas leakage at the platform 240 kilometers east of Aberdeen. A gas cloud was seen rising from Elgin PUQ platform in the North Sea and is visible 11 kilometers away.

“This is a gas blowout that is out of control and is going to be so for a long time, Bellona President Frederic Hauge said.

The Bellona Foundation has established a special team that is following the leak closely.

Total admitted Tuesday, after several reassurances that the leak would have no environmental consequences, that the well would be “difficult to bring under control” – raising the specter of a Deepwater Horizon take two in the North Sea.

Bellona concerned

As the news started to pour into the Bellona offices on Monday night, the information became more and more alarming.

“The information we have right now indicates that it will be very challenging to prevent a blowout. This is a critical situation that is out of control,” Hauge said.

Jake Molloy, the head of the section of the UK union that represents offshore oil and gas workers, agreed telling Reuters that A separate relief well may need to be drilled to ease pressure and allow emergency teams to regain entry to the rig and try to fix the problem.

“The well in question had caused Total some problems for some considerable time … a decision was taken weeks ago to try to kill the well, but then an incident began to develop over the weekend,” said Malloy.

“Engineers have told me that it is almost certain that gas is leaking directly from the reservoir through the pipe casing,” he said – something Hauge had pointed out might be the case early Monday morning.

Three oil platforms – the Elgin, Shell’s Shearwater and nearby Rowan Viking drilling rig have evacuated a total of 323 workers – 238 from Elgin alone.

Extreme reservoirs

The Elgin/Franklin reservoirs are located off the coast of Aberdeen, Scotland in an area of high petroleum activity. The fields are linked. The area contains a large field with wells up to 6000 meters deep and that hold extreme pressure and temperature.

During the drilling of Elgin/Franklin in 2003, world records for pressure and temperature were broken as engineers found reservoir pressures between 600 and 1100 bar and temperatures reaching 200 degree Celsius. By comparison, the Deepwater Horizon blowout occurred at 896 bar. The field on which the platform is located was discovered in 1991.

Bellona has learned that there have been incidents at the well that have veered dangerously close to accidents, including a serious incident in 2005. Other grave safety shortcomings have also been revealed in this field.

Total was, in fact, considering killing the well when the problems began over the weekend.

“The well in question had caused Total some problems for some considerable time […] a decision was taken weeks ago to try to kill the well, but then an incident began to develop,” Malloy was quoted by the BBC as saying.

Elgin identified as a problem well

According to Hauge, the Elgin/Franklin is “the well from hell.”

The incident leading up to the bubbling disaster started early on Sunday morning at Elgin platform when workers discovered a well control problem.

They noted a blue sheen on the water’s surface and bubbles from boiling water beneath the platform. The leak was already so large Sunday by 12:15 that 219 non-critical personnel were evacuated to Aberdeen, leaving a skeleton crew of 19 aboard the platform.

Crews from Elgin, other platforms evacuated

Those left behind tried to gain control of the leak but were unable. The well was completely downmanned at 2:30 on Monday – appoximately 14 hours after the incident started

After the evacuation, a no-fly zone of three nautical miles around the well was established. Coastguards said shipping was also being ordered to keep at least two nautical miles away.

Shell also evacuated 52 of the 90 workers aboard Shearwater platform – which is attached to the Noble Hans Deul platform by a 10 meter bridge – leaving 38 onboard.

Petroleum company Total E & P United Kingdom (TEP United Kingdom) operates the Elgin/Franklin platform and Rowan Viking rig, which was connected to Elgin. Total E & P told Bellona that both the platform and the rig are intact and confirmed that all crew have been evacuated to the mainland.

Impossible to stop

In Bellona’s analysis, the discharge at the Elgin field is going to be very difficult to stop. When the gas escapes it becomes impossible to get back on board the platform to deal with it. Gas in the water affects the buoyancy of possible rescue rigs, and the water is flammable.

Bellona does not know today how much gas is left in the part of the reservoir where Elgin is situated, but the foundation is sure that this leak will increase in scope.

When gas and condensate coming from depths as great as 5000 meters at high pressures rises, they will expand exponentially on their way to the surface. Sand and debris will dig holes in metal near the bore hole.  If the gas is moving outside of the well, it will dig further and further into the bore’s rise.

Problematic relief wells

Bellona believes that when a platform is evacuated, the only remaining measure to bring the situation under control is drilling a relief well – as was done at Deepwater Horizon, the BP oil blowout in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010.

But Bellona fears this may difficult if not impossible. Such a well must be drilled very deep depending on how deep the leak in the Elgin well is. To dig the relief well, workers must somehow drill in under the leak and put in a new plug. Doing this depends on using highly advanced platforms in a nearly surgical procedure that can take months.

High gas concentrations in the area are telling as they shows how far from any platform a relief well must be drilled.

But with buoyancy and flammability issues to consider, any rig drilling a relief well would have to do it from a great distance. To get a rig any closer than 10 kilometers, said Hauge, rescue workers would have to set the gas in the sea on fire.

But if there are platforms available to drill from such distance and this deep, the question that remains is will they do it? This, thinks Bellona, will be very difficult to arrange. Platforms of this nature would first have to be released from their current contracts, which will take time, as such highly specialized rigs are used for drilling other complex wells. Drilling for the relief well alone could then take as long as three months if not far longer.

So task number one at the moment, says Bellona, is to immediately secure a drilling platform that is capable of drilling the relief well. If such equipment is available, it must immediately be requisitioned.

If drilling a relief well is not possible, the only solution is the worst-case scenario of letting the reservoir blow out until all of its pressure is tamped down. As the quantity of gas in the reservoir is unknown, fears that large amounts remain are well founded. This gas would then be released into the water and air over a long period.

Environmental impact

The environmental consequences of this accident could be substantial. Having large amounts of hydrocarbons in water and on the surface is not desirable. It will not look like an oil spill, but the hydrocarbons released will have many of the same dramatic effects. Bacteria, for instance, ingests hydrocarbons and hence consumes enormous amounts of oxygen in the water.  Blue condensate sheen on the surface of the water will destroy the plumage of sea foul.

Should the situation develop to the point where all the gas from the reservoir is released, it will lead to major emissions of greenhouse gasses: When unburned natural gas enters the atmosphere, its detrimental effect on the atmosphere is 20 times worse than that caused by CO2.

Difficult choices ahead

The coming days will lead to difficult choices as Total struggles to bring the leak under control. If the worst case scenario does indeed occur, it must be considered whether setting fire to the spill is not the best course of action. This too will have environmental consequences, putting Total and the British government between the devil and the deep blue sea.

The Elgin/Franklin accident bears similarities to the Deepwater Horizon blowout, the only real difference being that Elgin is pumping gas condensate and not crude oil into the sea. The Rowan Viking rig is a brand new platform launched in 2010 and considered – like the Deepwater Horizon rig – to be state of the art for the drilling industry.

Rough conditions in the North Sea

The drilling was taking place under difficult conditions, with extreme pressure, high temperatures and great depths of the reservoir. Drilling in such circumstances involves enormous gambles: In situations like this, there are no ready-made solutions for dealing with the worst-case scenario, as Deepwater Horizon showed.

Similarities to oil accidents

The disaster now bearing out at Elgin/Franklin also bears similarities to the accident at Norwegian Statoil’s Gullfaks C platform in 2010. There too, Bellona had previously asked questions about the possibilities of drilling relief wells should gas leaks occur.

Fortunately, there have so far been no injuries or deaths in the current leak. But Bellona fears what unpleasant questions this accident will raise and what answers Total will be able to supply for them.

March 23, 2012

The White House on Friday named Jim Yong Kim, the president of Dartmouth College and a global health expert, as its nominee to lead the World Bank.

That makes Dr. Kim the front-runner to take the helm of the multinational development institution on June 30, when its current president, Robert B. Zoellick, will step down at the end of his five-year term. Tradition has held that Washington selects the head of the World Bank and Europe the leader of its sister institution, the International Monetary Fund, since they were founded during World War II.

Dr. Kim’s name was not among those widely bandied about since Mr. Zoellick announced his plans to move on last month. Highly respected among aid experts, Dr. Kim is an anthropologist and a physician who co-founded Partners in Health, a nonprofit that provides health care for the poor, and a former director of the department of H.I.V./AIDS at the World Health Organization.

“The leader of the World Bank should have a deep understanding of both the role that development plays in the world and the importance of creating conditions where assistance is no longer needed,” President Obama said Friday. “It’s time for a development professional to lead the world’s largest development agency.”

In a statement, Timothy F. Geithner, the Treasury secretary and an alumnus of Dartmouth, praised Dr. Kim: “Development is his lifetime commitment, and it is his passion. And in a world with so much potential to improve living standards, we have a unique opportunity to harness that passion and experience at the helm of the World Bank.”

Dr. Kim, who was awarded a prestigious MacArthur Fellowship in 2003, was born in Seoul, South Korea, in 1959 and moved with his family to the United States when he was 5. He graduated from Brown University in 1982, earned an M.D. from Harvard University in 1991 and received a Ph.D. in anthropology there in 1993.

He was the first Asian-American to head an Ivy League institution when he took the Dartmouth post in 2009.

While working with Partners in Health in Lima, Peru, in the mid-1990s, Dr. Kim helped to develop a treatment program for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, the first large-scale treatment of that disease in a poor country. Treatment programs for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis are now in place in more than 40 nations, according to Dr. Kim’s biography on Dartmouth’s Web site. He also spearheaded the successful effort to reduce the price of the drugs used to treat this form of tuberculosis.

“Jim is all about delivery and about delivering on promises often made but too seldom kept,” said Paul Farmer, a co-founder of Partners in Health, in an e-mailed statement. “I can think of no one more able to help families, communities and entire nations break out of poverty.”

During his short tenure at Dartmouth, Dr. Kim won a reputation as a level-headed technocrat who frequently encouraged students to think globally.

“Most every college president has to get up and say it’s important to go off and change the world,” said Jonathan S. Skinner, an economist at Dartmouth. “But there aren’t many college presidents who’ve gone out and have changed the world.”

Dr. Kim’s ascension to the head of the World Bank is not a sure thing. But the United States supported the candidacy of Christine Lagarde, the former French finance minister, to head the International Monetary Fund last year, presumably assuring that Europe would support Dr. Kim’s nomination.

In recent years, major emerging economies have criticized the decades-old gentlemen’s agreement giving the United States control of the World Bank’s presidency. The Group of 20 countries has called for a fairer, more transparent selection process for the top posts at the World Bank and the I.M.F., and the World Bank itself has reaffirmed its commitment to an open and merit-based process.

“We are trying to ensure that we start having a process whereby we can choose the most qualified person, regardless of nationality,” said Amar Bhattacharya, the director of the Group of 24, an umbrella group of developing countries. “The struggle is about the credibility of the process as much as it is about who wins.”

Dr. Kim, as an American, will not escape some of that criticism. But his background working in poorer countries may partially insulate him, and Mr. Obama was reportedly drawn to him in part because of his work fighting tuberculosis and AIDS.

In addition, powerful emerging market countries, like Brazil and China, failed to rally around a single, viable candidate since the announcement of Mr. Zoellick’s departure.

Dr. Kim is not the only candidate for the World Bank job. On Friday, Angola, South Africa and Nigeria put forward Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Nigerian finance minister and former World Bank official.

José Antonio Ocampo, the former finance minister of Colombia and a United Nations official, is rumored to be another candidate.

Jeffrey D. Sachs, the development economist and director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University, had put himself forward for the position and won the support of some developing countries, including Kenya, although the United States was not supporting his candidacy. On Friday, Mr. Sachs withdrew his candidacy and endorsed Dr. Kim.

“Dr. Jim Kim is a superb nominee for the World Bank presidency,” Mr. Sachs said in an e-mailed statement. “I congratulate the administration for nominating a world-class development leader for this position.”

The World Bank will stop accepting nominations at 6 p.m. Eastern time Friday. If there are more than three candidates, the board will name a short list soon thereafter. The bank has said it intends to select its new president in the time for the World Bank and International Monetary Fund spring meetings in April.

The bank provided $57.4 billion in support to low-income and middle-income countries last year. Under Mr. Zoellick’s leadership, the bank raised an additional $90 billion for its fund for the world’s poorest. It also opened up huge troves of data to the public to aid research on development and poverty.

[Simmons_A1]

March 22, 2012      7:21 a.m. ET

Few people want to defeat President Barack Obama more than billionaire Harold Clark Simmons, who is willing to spend many millions of dollars in the quest. As it happens, campaign rules now give him the opportunity.

Watching a TV news report that Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum was rising in polls last month, Mr. Simmons wondered about the prospects of the former Pennsylvania senator. He called his personal political muse, Republican strategist Karl Rove.

Harold Simmons, who has donated more than $18 million to conservative super PACs to beat President Obama, aims to double that amount by November. WSJ’s Monica Langley spoke with Jerry Seib about her interview with the press-shy Texas billionaire.

“Is he worth investing into his super PAC?” Mr. Simmons asked. He rose from his leather recliner in the den and stood at a bay window overlooking swans gliding on a lake encircled by 17,000 tulips. “Does he have a chance?”

“Yes, I wouldn’t count him out,” Mr. Rove said. Mr. Simmons’s wife, Annette, who was keen on Mr. Santorum, promptly donated $1 million to his super PAC, cash badly needed for an ad blitz ahead of the Super Tuesday primaries.

The 80-year-old Texan, who heads Contran Corp., a chemicals and metals conglomerate, gave hefty donations to the super PACs supporting other GOP candidates during similar moments in the spotlight: Rick Perry’s optimistic entry into the race last summer, and after the debate-driven surge of Newt Gingrich. Mr. Simmons has so far given $800,000—including $500,000 this week—to super PACs backing former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who won the Illinois primary Tuesday and contends no rival can catch him in the GOP delegate race.

How Much Are Super PACs Spending?

Sort by candidate, by week, by expense type, by PAC name and more.

[superpacs]

It isn’t particularly important which man wins the nomination, for Mr. Simmons simply wants to defeat the president and reduce the reach of government. “Any of these Republicans would make a better president than that socialist, Obama,” said Mr. Simmons during two days of rare interviews at his Dallas home and office. “Obama is the most dangerous American alive…because he would eliminate free enterprise in this country.”

The tall, lanky, soft-spoken industrialist has given more than $18 million to conservative super PACs so far, making him the 2012 election’s single largest contributor—ahead of billionaires Sheldon Adelson, Mr. Gingrich’s financial patron, and Foster Friess, Mr. Santorum’s biggest donor.

Sipping lemonade iced tea made with lemons grown on his California estate east of Santa Barbara—next door to Oprah Winfrey’s place in Montecito—Mr. Simmons said he planned to spend $36 million before the November election.

Unlike some big donors—including Mr. Adelson—Mr. Simmons isn’t driven by an attraction to a specific candidate or policy. His motivation is broader: to elect Republicans up and down the line in the hopes they will change the overall U.S. tax and regulatory approach.

That helps explain why the biggest chunk of his political contributions in this election cycle have gone not to individual candidates but to Mr. Rove-advised super PAC American Crossroads—its stated mission to defeat Mr. Obama and elect “majorities in both the House and the Senate that are 100% dedicated to rescuing our economy from the Obama agenda.”

Mr. Simmons has some businesses that are heavily regulated, which helps explains his interest in deregulation. He also pushes for tort reform. One of his companies, NL Industries Inc., has fought lawsuits from school districts and businesses over lead paint that it made before Mr. Simmons acquired it.

More broadly, he said, he and other individuals need to contribute to match the “unlimited amounts from labor unions” that benefit liberal candidates.

“I’ve got the money, so I’m spending it for the good of the country,” said Mr. Simmons, whose net worth is estimated at $10 billion, up from an estimated $4.1 billion in prerecession 2006, according to Forbes. He wears $3,000 Brioni sport coats in a nod to his wealth and Wal-Mart underwear in a sign of a frugal upbringing; his early years were spent without indoor plumbing or electricity.

Republicans consider super PAC contributions essential to offset an expected advantage by Mr. Obama’s campaign, which had $85 million in reserves at the end of February—more than all four GOP presidential candidates combined, and well more than the $7.3 million on hand for Mr. Romney.

Democrats also have financial advantages when it comes to official party organizations. The Democratic National Committee has outraised its Republican counterpart $157.7 million to $116.3 million so far, according to data compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics. The two party organizations have roughly the same amount of cash on hand, but the Republican National Committee, still digging out of a deep financial hole from the 2010 election, has about twice as much debt.

Democratic committees to support House and Senate candidates also have slightly outraised their Republican counterparts so far this cycle.

In contrast, the Republican advantage lies with the super PACs. The largest Democratic-leaning super PAC, the one set up to benefit Mr. Obama, has raised just $6.3 million compared with $26.9 million by American Crossroads. (The American Crossroads figure doesn’t include money contributed to a sister organization that doesn’t have to make public its donors.)

This year’s election seems tailor-made for Mr. Simmons. New rules effectively eliminate limits for those willing to take advantage of a string of federal court decisions and regulatory changes that together allow super PACs to take unlimited donations and advocate for a candidate or party, as long as they don’t coordinate their spending with the presidential campaigns.

People who disagree with the changes say super PACs now have more influence than political parties and are less accountable. “Harold Simmons is unleashed to give as much as he wants—whether motivated to help Republicans or his business empire,” said Bill Allison, editorial director of Sunlight Foundation, a nonpartisan government watchdog group.

Ben LaBolt, of the Obama campaign, said: “Mr. Simmons is a self-proclaimed corporate raider who, like many others representing special interests, will spend whatever it takes to maintain the ability to write rules that benefit his own interests at the expense of middle-class Americans and to the detriment of what’s best for the nation.”

Mr. Simmons said, “You never talk about what you want when giving money.” Besides, he added, “I don’t pay attention to what other people think…There shouldn’t be restrictions of any kind on political contributions.”

He is a longtime political donor; he was fined by the Federal Election Commission for surpassing contribution limits in 1988 and 1989, which he said was inadvertent. When politicians call his office now, his secretary runs an Internet search to ensure they are “pro-business, antigovernment,” he said. He isn’t interested in such conservative social issues as abortion. “I’d probably be pro-choice,” he said. “Let people make decisions on their own bodies.”

Longtime friend and oil man T. Boone Pickens described Mr. Simmons as a man who backs up his beliefs with his bucks. “Harold isn’t doing this for attention,” the fellow Republican said. To the contrary, while mega-donors Mr. Adelson and Mr. Friess have gone on TV to tout big gifts to their candidates, Mr. Simmons rarely speaks publicly. He agreed nonetheless to talk with The Wall Street Journal on a range of subjects, including money, politics and his appetite for sweet potatoes.

The son of school teachers from tiny Golden, in east Texas, Mr. Simmons earned economics degrees—a bachelor’s degree in 1951 and a master’s degree a year later—from the University of Texas, where he also played guard on the 1951 basketball team that won the Southwest Conference. He worked as a bank examiner for the federal government and a bank loan officer.

“All the guys getting loans had high-school educations and were making more money,” Mr. Simmons said. “I had grandiose financing ideas but no one listened to me. I had no credibility as a businessman.”

To remedy that, Mr. Simmons bought his first business in 1960, a drugstore across the street from Southern Methodist University, using $5,000 in savings and a $95,000 loan. He kept buying another and another, eventually getting a pilot’s license to visit them all. In 1973, he sold his 100-store chain for $50 million. Mr. Simmons used the proceeds to buy stock of underperforming public companies, turning into a corporate raider in the 1970s and 1980s with the nickname “Ice Man.”

Mr. Simmons said his political activism was sparked in 1983, when the Labor Department accused him of mishandling pension fund assets. A federal judge found he invested an excessive portion of the pension in a takeover target, Amalgamated Sugar Co. The judge awarded no cash damages because the fund earned 50% on its investment. Mr. Simmons agreed not to use pension funds in takeover bids for 10 years, according to a consent decree that settled the case.

“That’s when I started contributing to politicians with free-market and antiregulation agendas,” he said. “If the Labor Department hadn’t sued, that pension would be as rich as me.”

His corporate empire, under the Contran holding company, includes large stakes in multinational conglomerates NL Industries, Titanium Metals Corp., Valhi Inc., Kronos Worldwide Inc. and Keystone Consolidated Industries Inc. These diverse interests include the heavily regulated waste-control and nuclear-waste disposal businesses, as well as some of the world’s biggest manufacturers of chemicals, components and titanium for military and commercial aircraft.

Many of these companies bear the weight of government regulatory decisions, making Mr. Simmons’s political interest more than simple patriotism. “We live with a smothering of government,” said Steven Watson, Contran’s No. 2 executive. He listed oversight by the Environmental Protection Agency, banking regulators, the Labor Department and Securities and Exchange Commission, as well as “frivolous lawsuits” brought by state attorneys general.

From a spotless desk, Mr. Simmons pores over financial statements of his far-flung empire, which has 10,000 employees world-wide. “No one understands my financials better than I do,” he said. “It’s so much fun to run my companies.”

His business success allows a lavish life. On a recent weekend, Mr. Simmons flew his jet, with two co-pilots aboard, to his Santa Barbara County estate. He also frequently flies to his Arkansas ranch—filled with 35 bears and 100 elk, as well as 250 deer and 300 wild turkeys for hunting.

This month, Mr. Simmons played golf at Augusta National and frequently plays with his stepson Andy Fleck, who works for Contran. Mr. Simmons works out at home with a Pilates instructor. He drinks Opus One wine and typically eats fish. On Sunday nights, he grills steak for dinners with his wife.

He and Annette Simmons, 76, his wife of 31 years, are major philanthropists, with their names on buildings throughout the state. “Harold doesn’t say a word. He’s so quiet, he hardly talks,” said Dallas grande dame Ruth Atshuler. “He just makes tons of money and gives it away.” At social events, caterers give Mr. Simmons a doggie bag to take home in his chauffeur-driven Bentley.

He has given $500 million to mostly Texas charities, including a new organ-transplant hospital wing after his successful kidney transplant a few years ago. His stepdaughter Amy donated a kidney to Mr. Simmons, who later adopted her. He also gave $5 million to a South African school started by his California neighbor, Ms. Winfrey. The TV host had Mrs. Simmons on her show twice—about the annual sweet-potato festival in Mr. Simmons’s hometown and Mrs. Simmons’s famous tea parties. At her 50th birthday party, Ms. Winfrey danced first with Mr. Simmons—until John Travolta cut in.

The billionaire takes day trips every week to visit obscure libraries, churches and museums around Texas. He arrives unannounced and typically turns over a big check or several hundred dollar bills. He gives $50 and $100 bills to panhandlers to and from work. If they use the money to buy liquor or drugs, he said, it’s “not my business.”

The Simmonses hobnob with Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and Mr. Pickens and their wives. “Harold was my first supporter and friend when there was no honeymoon in this town,” said Mr. Jones, who was reviled when he bought the team 23 years ago and fired coach Tom Landry. He and Mr. Simmons have neighboring boxes at the new Cowboy stadium.

On a recent afternoon, Mr. Simmons, donning a Dallas Cowboy Windbreaker, walked his Springer Spaniel Duke and counted the ducks in his lake, 42 on this morning. Three times he climbed the 60 stairs of the brick tower he built in his backyard to watch the Dallas sunset.

Later that day, Mr. Simmons, who goes to Luby’s Cafeteria for a $5.95 lunch or brings leftovers, met with the two of his four daughters who run his charitable foundation. Serena Simmons Connelly strongly disagrees with her father’s politics. But she recently removed her Obama bumper sticker as a concession. “Dad and I have parking spots next to each other,” she said.

Mr. Simmons was a key donor for the Swift Boat veterans’ attack ads against Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry in 2004, as well as the 2008 campaign ads touting ties between Mr. Obama and Bill Ayers, co-founder of the radical Weather Underground. “If we had run more ads,” he said, “we could have killed Obama.”

Mr. Simmons relishes his chance to give freely in this year’s election, particularly in conjunction with Mr. Rove, the top political adviser to former President George W. Bush. “Karl is the best political mind out there,” he said.

In early 2010, Mr. Rove gathered a handful of big Texas donors for lunch at a private club in Dallas, including Mr. Pickens, real-estate magnate Harlan Crow and Mr. Simmons. Mr. Rove explained how the fledgling group American Crossroads would work to defeat Mr. Obama and get GOP control of Congress. “All of us are responsible for the kind of country we have,” Mr. Rove recalled saying.

After Mr. Rove paused, Mr. Simmons spoke first. “I’m in,” he said. Mr. Rove said Mr. Simmons’s early nod helped give the group instant credibility.

Mr. Simmons said he relies on Mr. Rove’s advice on the prospects and positions of candidates. Aside from his contributions to presidential contenders, Mr. Simmons and his private holding company have, since 2010, donated almost $20 million to American Crossroads, which plans with its sister organization to spend as much as $300 million to defeat Democrats in the November election.

The very private Mr. Simmons and the well-known Mr. Rove have become unlikely partners, chatting by phone every couple of days. “Karl won’t waste my money,” Mr. Simmons said, noting that American Crossroads doesn’t sink money into hopeless or easily winnable contests.

“Getting control of Congress is almost as important as beating the president,” he said. “If Republicans can get control of the Senate, we can block that crap,” which he described as over-regulation of business.

Last week, Mr. Simmons considered whether to give more money to the GOP contenders, as the race narrowed to Messrs. Romney and Santorum. The billionaire with a knack for numbers sees merit in Mr. Romney’s mathematical argument that only he will win enough delegates to clinch the nomination, and he put a half million dollars behind his calculation this week.

“I have lots of money, and can give it legally now,” he said, “just never to Democrats.”

March 22, 2012

Amidst the clamor for the dismissal of the Sanford Police chief heading the investigation into the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin by a neighborhood watch volunteer, City Manager Norton Bonaparte told ABC News he’ll defer a decision on the chief’s fate until a thorough investigation is completed.

Martin’s family meets officials from the Department of Justice later this afternoon. The FBI has said it is now examining 911 tapes, which include a possible racial slur muttered by Martin’s killer, George Zimmerman, a neighborhood crime watch volunteer who pursued Martin, confronted him and after a scuffle shot him dead.

Bonaparte acknowledged that the race issue continues to dominate local discourse. “The actual killing of Martin is tragic and what it hit a chord on in America is the ongoing systemic problems between law enforcement and the black community.”

Later today thousands are expected to attend a rally organized by the Reverend Al Sharpton, demanding Zimmerman’s arrest. Because of current racial tensions security is expected to be intense.

“It’s an opportunity to say in America we are going to change the face of racism,” said Bonaparte. “This is terrible but let’s see what we can learn from this…”

The rally follows a heated special meeting of Sanford city commissioners last night who voted “no confidence” against embattled Police Chief Billy Lee. Three of five commissioners voted against the chief.

One commissioner demanded that Lee resign. It is now up to the city manager to decide whether to let Lee go.

“The unknown in a tragedy will make the heart do crazy things, and we haven’t done a good job of getting out in front of that,” said Sanford Mayor Jeff Triplett after the vote. “I have confidence in him in a lot of ways, and don’t have confidence in him in some ways.”

The vote of “no confidence” came after Triplett fielded some tough questions from neighborhood residents and the media during an NAACP meeting aimed at addressing allegations of police misconduct in the community.

“If there were mistakes made we are going to act accordingly,” Triplett said in response to a question from ABC News about the investigation into Martin’s death.

Some believe local authorities botched the investigation from the start.

Martin, who was black, was carrying only a bag of skittles, ice tea and his cell phone, when Zimmerman allegedly killed him on Feb. 26. While Martin’s family has repeatedly called for his arrest, Sanford Police accepted and stood by Zimmerman’s claim of self-defense.

But it’s not just the mayor, or the conduct of the police officers, that is being questioned.

Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law gives enormous leeway to people like Zimmerman to use deadly force if they feel threatened. Since the law was enacted seven years ago, justified homicides in Florida have jumped threefold, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Twenty states have similar laws, but Florida’s is widely viewed as having the broadest application. Courts across the state have been trying to figure out how to grapple with the legislation and the Martin killing is one of several examples that have stirred controversy.

In another ongoing trial, lawyers for Trevor Dooley are using the law to defend him in the death of his neighbor David James. In 2010, Dooley shot James in front of his 8-year-old daughter after witnesses say the two men got into an altercation on a basketball court in Valrico, Fla., when James tried to prevent Dooley from shooing away a teenage skateboarder using the court to practice tricks.

Dooley’s attorneys argue that he is protected by Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law and that he shot James in self defense.

Cases like this and Martin’s have led Florida State Rep. Dennis Baxley, R-Ocala, one of the original sponsors of the law, to say that it has been misused.

“There was nothing in this statute ever intended to protect somebody who was pursuing or confronting other people,” said Baxley.

March 22, 2012 at 8:16 AM

A 22-year-old Waller County man suspected of murdering his parents and older brother tearfully confessed to investigators Wednesday that he was planning a much larger, Columbine-style attack at a local school when he opened fire on his family, law enforcement sources confirmed to KHOU 11 News.

Trey Sesler reportedly opened up to investigators at the Waller County Jail, where he’s been held since his arrest Tuesday evening.

According to investigators, Sesler said he killed his parents and brother because he didn’t want them to be ashamed of what he was about to do.

He said he’d been shooting livestock to build up courage for a Columbine-style mass-shooting at Waller High School. Investigators said Sesler hinted that another former Waller student was going to help him carry out the massacre.

A person who claimed to be a close friend of Sesler told KHOU 11 News that Sesler clearly hated school and his teachers.

Sesler posted videos of himself firing weapons on YouTube prior to the triple homicide.

“If you come to that point, what do you have on your mind,” Waller County Sheriff R. Glenn Smith said. “I certainly don’t think it was something that just happened, all of a sudden, in one bad argument. These kinds of things, probably something had been going on with his young man for a while.”

Sesler was arrested Tuesday night, just hours after police found the bodies of his parents – Lawton Ray and Rhonda Wyse Sesler – and his brother, 26-year-old Mark Alan Sesler, at their home in Waller.

Police are not sure exactly when the victims were shot, but said it could have been as early as Monday afternoon. Police were called to the home by concerned family members around 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Investigators described the gruesome scene as a “war zone.”

“The best way for me to describe the residence is it looked like a war zone – a tremendous amount of damage inside the residence, the crime scene was not contained to one area of the residence. It was from one end of the residence to the other, front to back, which is unusual,” Waller Police Chief Phil Rehak said.

Texas Rangers quickly tracked Trey Sesler down at a friend’s house near Magnolia after spotting his car outside the residence. They said he had two guns on him at the time—one inside, and one in his car.

Family members said the young suspect was suffering from some type of mental illness.

But investigators said they have no idea what exactly might be wrong.

The FBI was called in Wednesday to assist with the investigation, and officers were searching Sesler’s grandmother’s home in Hempstead for evidence.A friend said Trey Sesler’s parents allowed him to live in the grandmother’s home alone, but continued to support him financially.

There was a sign on the mail box indicating that the home was under surveillance and KHOU 11 News found a video camera mounted near the back door

There was also a pet grave located right up against the house. There was a cross with the pet’s name and underneath the words: Forgive me.

He will be arraigned on capital murder charges Thursday morning, police said.

A 23-year-old Frenchman who claimed responsibility for killing four men and three children was shot dead on Thursday as security forces stormed the apartment where he had been holed up for more than 30 hours, French officials said.

François Molins, the prosecutor in charge of the investigation, said the suspect, identified as Mohammed Merah, was shot in the head as he jumped out a window, firing wildly at the assault force.

Just before noon, officers entered the apartment through a front door and windows that had been blasted out, Claude Guéant, the French interior minister, said. Inside the apartment, the suspect, identified as Mohammed Merah, emerged from a bathroom “firing with extreme violence,” Mr. Guéant said.

“At the end, Mohammed Merah jumped out a window with a weapon in his hand, still firing,” he said. “He was found dead on the ground.”

More than 300 rounds were discharged in the firefight, Mr. Guéant said, and two officers were lightly wounded.

French government ministers had said that they hoped to take him alive.

The assault force had entered the apartment and slowly searched each room using video equipment. Not finding Mr. Merah in any of the other rooms, they came to the bathroom last, Mr. Guéant said. As the police began to inspect it with the cameras, Mr. Merah sprang out and began firing.

“France has just been through an ordeal,” President Nicolas Sarkozy said in a televised address shortly after the operation. He praised the work of French security forces and said the episode would prompt him to seek changes in the law to criminalize travel abroad by French citizens for training or “indoctrination” by terror groups. Mr. Sarkozy also indicated plans to criminalize the viewing of Web sites that “applaud terrorism.”

Mr. Merah, with a history of delinquency, disaffection and identification with Al Qaeda, personified what terrorism experts describe as a violent, homegrown militant who operates on his own _ the profile European terrorism experts find particularly difficult to identify and combat.

A former garage mechanic of Algerian descent, Mr. Merah made two trips to Afghanistan and Pakistan in recent years, and said that he had been trained by Al Qaeda. Though Mr. Merah had initially indicated to negotiators that he hoped to live, Mr. Guéant told French radio earlier on Thursday he wanted “to die with weapons in his hands.”

Mr. Merah had barricaded himself in the apartment building in the quiet neighborhood of Côte Pavée on Wednesday, after police attempted to arrest him shortly after 3 a.m.

A series of explosions and gunshots which began before midnight continued into the early hours of Thursday, when French news media reported that security forces were attempting to destroy a window at the suspect’s apartment, deprive him of sleep and let in the night cold in the hope that Mr. Merah might surrender peacefully.

But those hopes diminished late on Wednesday after Mr. Merah indicated that “if he was taken, he would kill police officers,” Mr. Guéant said.

In the first six hours of the standoff, the suspect fired several heavy volleys at officers trying to enter his apartment, wounding two, though neither seriously. At one point he tossed a .45-caliber pistol from the window, the same kind used in each of the three attacks, and was given some kind of “means of communication,” according to the authorities, presumably a cellphone or walkie-talkie.

“He expressed no regrets, saving only that he did not have the time to reach more victims,” François Molins, the Paris prosecutor responsible for overseeing antiterror investigations in France, said, adding that Mr. Merah said he had planned to kill a soldier on Wednesday morning, and at some point to kill two police officers here.

A top editor at the news channel France 24 said in a televised interview that she had spoken by telephone to a man who claimed to be the shooter in the hours before the police surrounded Mr. Merah’s building. “He was calm, was speaking in very good French and punctuated by Arabic expressions,” said the editor, Ebba Kalondo. She also said he spoke of planning more attacks and of intending to post video of his killings online.

Mohammed Merah, the man believed to be the gunman on a scooter who killed seven people in south-western France, is a 23-year-old French citizen of Algerian extraction.

Before the shootings in Toulouse and Montauban, he was brought to French attention because of visits he made to Pakistan and Afghanistan, where he reportedly escaped from prison while serving a sentence for carrying bomb-making equipment.

He was also known to the French authorities because he had a criminal record for non-terrorist crimes.

Police surrounded him at a block of flats in Toulouse after the shootings, in which three French soldiers and a rabbi and three Jewish children were killed.

According to the French authorities, he said he had sought to avenge Palestinian children and to attack the French army because of its foreign interventions.

He had described himself as an Islamist warrior and member of the al-Qaeda network.

French news channel BFM TV said he was linked to Forsane Alizza (Knights of Pride), an Islamist group banned last month in France.

Juvenile delinquent

French broadcaster France 24 said it had received a call from a man claiming to be the gunman.

He allegedly told a journalist he had “filmed all the murders” and that the videos “would be posted online shortly”.

Two years ago I learnt that he had suddenly become radicalised and had left for Afghanistan”

Christian Etelin Lawyer to Mohammed Merah

The suspect is from Toulouse where he grew up on the Izards housing estate, according to French newspaper JDD.

He later moved into the block of flats on Sergent Vigne Street, in a quiet part of the city, where he was surrounded by police.

A neighbour described him as a “quiet man with a beard” who had “never done anything special”.

In 2010, he applied to join the French Foreign Legion but failed on his first day, French magazine Le Point reports.

From a family of five children, the suspect is a mechanic by trade, according to Le Point.

With 18 acts of violence on his record, he was considered a juvenile delinquent when growing up.

However, two of his friends said he was a “nice guy” who “got on well with everyone”, JDD reports.

One of them, Samir, said Mohammed Merah had been seen in a Toulouse night club only last week.

“I served in the army and he never said anything to me about it,” he added.

“I am also shocked he killed North Africans. We can’t believe it.”

Taliban jailbreak?

Mohammed Merah visited Pakistan twice, in 2010 and 2011, French reports say.

According to French newspaper Le Monde, he trained with militants in Pakistan before crossing the border, where at one stage he was stopped by an Afghan police patrol.

How French police tracked down the gunman

Mixed iamge showing scooter, Imad Ibn-Ziate and the appartment block where the suspect is

6 March: A Yamaha T-MAX scooter like the one above was stolen and used by the suspect in the targeted killings. The suspect later asked a garage how to re-spray the machine and how to switch off its tracker device.
11 March: French paratrooper, Imad Ibn-Ziaten, was lured to a meeting with the suspect after advertising his own scooter for sale. The suspect sent an email to arrange a meeting at which he killed the soldier.
21 March: The email address led to this apartment block in Toulouse. Two policemen were lightly wounded when they knocked on the door of an apartment. The heavily armed gunman is surrounded by police.

He was not arrested but the police reported his nationality to the Western authorities, Le Monde says.

Other French sources say he was arrested in Kandahar at the end of 2010 on a non-terrorist charge.

However, BBC News has learnt that he may have been in the region much earlier.

The director of Kandahar prison, Gulam Farooq, said a Mohammed Merah had been sentenced to three years in prison in 2007 after being arrested carrying bomb-making equipment.

The following year, this prisoner escaped along with several hundred others during a Taliban assault on the prison, Mr Farooq added.

Afghan officials reportedly alerted French police about Mohammed Merah’s activities.

In the days before police closed in on him, he was seen by a neighbour praying on a football pitch near his block of flats.

He reportedly became radicalised years ago while serving a brief prison sentence for a violent crime, Le Point says.

When his mother was asked by police to assist in police negotiations, she reportedly refused, saying she no longer had any influence over her son.

French lawyer Christian Etelin, who defended the suspect in non-terrorist proceedings in recent years, told AFP he had not given the impression of being a fanatic and had never talked about Islam to him.

“But two years ago I learnt that he had suddenly become radicalised and had left for Afghanistan,” the lawyer added.

After the first two shootings, in Toulouse and Montauban, the suspect was “in the sights” of France’s domestic intelligence service, the DCRI, along with others, an unnamed official told AFP news agency.

A crucial piece of evidence appears to have been an email account used to contact the first shooting victim, who had advertised a motorcycle online.

Consequently, the Sun’s transit through Aries corresponds to a time of emergence, “birth”, new beginnings and self-assertiveness, when we feel the urge to initiate action, to pioneer things and to conquer unchartered territories; when self-determination, impatience and willfulness are on the rise and when we are courageous, fierce and impulsive, even daring, as we’re pushing forward. During this period will we be strongly inclined to express our animus or the yang principle and thus show a tendency to act from an instinctual and primal level.

As this ingress coincides with the start of a new synodic cycle that combines the nurturing principle with the principle of Selfhood, the influence of this particular cycle will be resonating heavily throughout the entire solar year and with the tense semi-squareaspect of the Ceres-Eris conjunction in Aries to Chiron in Pisces in addition to the stressful sesqui-quadrate to Juno in Sagittarius, who is joined to the nodal axis by conjunction with the North Node, the stakes are higher than ever for each one of us in regard to which part of ourselves we want to give birth to and thus which side of our nature we want to feed – the lower animalistic drives or the higher ‘divine’ potential, expressed in either mean-spiritedness or high-spiritedness, emulation and mindfulness or ruthless competition and mindless aggression (the keynotes of the Sabian Symbols for the preceding Full Moon – emulation, not competition  and investiture – in which of them are we going to invest). Therefore, the state of the ego is the decisive factor in this equation and this will show in the level of Self-awareness and understanding we have developed, in our righteousness and code of morals and ethics as we’re seeking a more important role in our interactions with others and in regard to our long-term future prospects.

The International Space Station should be getting its first commercial cargo shipment in early May.

Space Exploration Technologies Corp., better known as SpaceX, plans to launch its Dragon capsule from Cape Canaveral on April 30. The Dragon will take a few days to get to the space station.

The launch was delayed from February for additional testing.

It will be the first time a private company launches space station supplies. It will also be the first U.S. delivery since NASA’s space shuttles stopped flying last year. Unmanned cargo ships from Russia, Europe and Japan are filling the void.

The billionaire founder of SpaceX, Elon Musk, wants to provide rides to the space station for American astronauts in the next few years. NASA astronauts currently are hitching rides on Russian vessels.

Marine Lance Cpl. Edward J. Dycus

Died February 1, 2012 Serving During Operation Enduring Freedom

22, of Greenville, Miss.; assigned to 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.; died Feb. 1 when he was shot by a member of the Afghan Security Forces in Helmand province, Afghanistan.

Marine from Miss. Killed in Afghanistan

By Therese Apel, The Clarion Ledger

Mississippi’s first casualty this year from the war in Afghanistan died at the hands of an Afghan soldier who was guarding a joint operating base with him in the Helmand province, officials said.

Wednesday’s death of Marine Lance Cpl. Edward Dycus, 22, of Greenville is under investigation, military officials say. Details were not released.

“He’s not just another dead soldier,” said childhood friend Kayla Bevill. “He wasn’t killed by ‘the enemy.’ He was killed by someone that was supposed to be helping him guard, and that’s what hurts the most.”

Dycus was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 9th Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force out of Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Since the beginning of Operation Enduring Freedom, Mississippi has had 70 military personnel killed in action, according to http://www.militarytimes.com. In 2011, Marine Staff Sgt. Jason A. Rogers, Army Staff Sgt. David D. Self, Army Sgt. Christopher R. Bell, and Navy Master-at-Arms 1st Class (AW) Stacy O. Johnson were Mississippi’s casualties.

Western Line School District Superintendent Larry Green said talks are in the works to have a candlelight service for Dycus, and about making the school grounds available for his funeral when arrangements are made.

Plans for a memorial service also are pending, officials said, but they believe Dycus’ body will arrive in Greenville on Saturday.

Lonnie Moorman, a friend, said Dycus entered boot camp in 2010 and hadn’t been in Afghanistan more than a few months when he was shot.

“Eddie was born for the military. He thrived in a situation like that,” Moorman said.

Dycus’ friends said he grew up in a tight-knit family, but switched schools a few times, and sometimes saw himself as a bit of an outsider.

“It was hard on him growing up, but he never let that show. He always had a smile on his face,” Bevill said. “No matter how his day or anything in his life was going, he was going to be there to put himself aside and make you smile. He was always more worried about someone else than himself.”

A gunman has opened fire on a Jewish school in the French city of Toulouse, killing three children and an adult, police say.

At least two people were also injured in the attack outside the Ozar Hatorah school in the north-east of the city.

Police are hunting for the gunman, who witnesses said was riding a black scooter.

The attack comes days after three soldiers were shot dead by a man on a scooter in the same part of France.

President Nicolas Sarkozy, his education minister and interior minister are travelling to Toulouse, in south-west France.

The grand rabbi of France, Gilles Bernheim, who is also on his way to the city, said he was “horrified” and “stunned” by what had happened.

Israel also said it was horrified, adding that it trusted the French authorities “to shed full light on this tragedy and bring the perpetrators to justice”.

Lockdown

map

Monday’s attack happened as children and their parents were arriving at the Ozar Hatorah school, in the Joliment area of the city, for the start of the school day.

The French network BFMTV said the dead included a school teacher, his six-year-old daughter and a 17-year-old school boy.

There is no information yet on the third child killed.

Local residents have immediately linked the shootings with last week’s attacks on the soldiers.

A 30-year-old paratrooper out of uniform was gunned down in a residential area of Toulouse just over a week ago, while two soldiers were killed and a third wounded as they used a cashpoint in the town of Montauban, some 29 miles (46km) away, on Thursday.

All the soldiers were of North African origin.

Some 60 police officers, including anti-terrorist specialists, had been drafted in to help investigate those attacks.

They have been looking for a gunman who was targeting soldiers, the BBC’s Christian Fraser in Paris says.

But if the latest attack does prove to be linked, then it suggests the pattern has changed and, if so, police are looking for a dangerous serial killer, our correspondent adds.

March 16, 2012

The military on Friday identified the soldier accused of killing 16 Afghan villagers earlier this week as Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, a 38-year-old father of two who had been injured twice in combat over the course of four deployments and had, his lawyer said, an exemplary military record.

The release of Sergeant Bales’s name, first reported by Fox News, ended an extraordinary six-day blackout of public information about him from the Pentagon, which said it withheld his identity for so long because of concerns about his and his family’s security.

An official said on Friday that Sergeant Bales had been transferred from Kuwait to Fort Leavenworth, Kan., where he had a cell to himself in the medium-security prison there. His wife and children were moved from their home in Lake Tapps, Wash., east of Tacoma, onto Joint Base Lewis-McChord, his home base, earlier this week.

Military officials say Sergeant Bales, who has yet to be formally charged, left his small combat outpost in the volatile Panjwai district of Kandahar Province early in the morning last Sunday, walked into two nearby villages and there shot or stabbed 16 people, 9 of them children.

Little more than the outlines of Sergeant Bales’s life are publicly known. His family lived in Lake Tapps, a community about 20 miles northeast of his Army post. NBC News reported that he was from Ohio, and he may have lived there until he joined the Army at 27. Sergeant Bales’s Seattle-based lawyer, John Henry Browne, said several members of the sergeant’s family moved to Washington after he was assigned to Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

Mr. Browne said the sergeant joined the Army right after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2011, and then spent almost all of his career at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, where he was part of the Third Stryker Brigade in the Second Infantry Division, named after the armored Stryker vehicles.

The killings have severely undermined longstanding NATO efforts to win support from villages in Kandahar, the birthplace of the Taliban, and have shaken relations with the government of President Hamid Karzai, who this week told Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta, who was on a visit to Afghanistan, that he wanted American forces out of villages by next year.

Pentagon officials, who have been scouring the sergeant’s military and health records for clues, have said little about what they think motivated the killings. But one senior government official said Thursday that Sergeant Bales had been drinking alcohol before the killings and that he might have had marital problems.

“When it all comes out, it will be a combination of stress, alcohol and domestic issues — he just snapped,” said the official, who had been briefed on the investigation and spoke on the condition of anonymity because the sergeant had not yet been charged.

Mr. Browne has disputed those assertions, telling reporters on Thursday that the sergeant’s marriage was sound and questioning reports about drinking. On the day before the shootings, he said, the sergeant had seen a fellow soldier lose his leg from a buried mine.

Mr. Browne, who said he had had a short conversation with Sergeant Bales because he was worried that their phone call was being monitored, added that the sergeant had thought he could avoid this deployment and was upset when he could not.

“The family was counting on him not being redeployed,” Mr. Browne said. “He and the family were told that his tours in the Middle East were over.”

He added, “I think that it would be fair to say that he and the family were not happy that he was going back.”

The Bales family lived in a two-story, wood-frame house beneath tall fir and cedar evergreens in Lake Tapps, an unincorporated section of Pierce County, Wash. Kassie Holland, a neighbor, said that as far as she could tell, they were a happy family and the sergeant was a devoted father to his young children, a daughter, Quincy, and a son, Bobby. “There were no signs,” Ms. Holland said when asked whether Mr. Bales seemed troubled.

The Baleses’ house had a lock box on the front door on Friday. Phillip Rodocker, a real estate agent, said that he was contacted by Ms. Bales on March 8, three days before the shooting in Afghanistan, and that she told him she wanted to sell the house in Lake Tapps.

“She told me she was behind in our payments,” Mr. Rodocker said. “She said he was on her fourth tour and it was getting kind of old and they needed to stabilize their finances.”

Mr. Rodocker said he and a colleague met with Ms. Bales at the house the next day. “It looked like it had been really, really neglected,” he said. “Four tours of duty and nobody around to take care of the exterior of the property.”

Because it took time for the paperwork to go through, the house was not officially put on the market until Monday, the day after the shooting. On Tuesday, Mr. Rodocker said, “She called and said needed to take the house off the market due to a family emergency.”

He said that the house remained on the market because he had not received a written request for it to be removed.

Zillow, the real estate Web site, shows the house listed for $229,000, about $50,000 less than the family paid for it in 2005. Mr. Rodocker said the house was going to be a short sale, meaning the Baleses owed more to the bank than what it would sell for.

Mr. Rodocker said Ms. Bales also asked his colleague to sell a second property, a house in Auburn, Wash., that he said she had bought before the Baleses were married.

Boxes were piled on the front porch at the house in Lake Tapps along with a snow sled, while toys, a barbecue grill and a weathered hot tub sat in the fenced backyard. Mr. Rodocker said Ms. Bales told him she was collecting boxes to prepare for a move.

Over the course of the decade, Sergeant Bales was deployed three times to Iraq, Army records show: between 2003 and 2004; for 15 months between June 2006 and September 2007, during the height of the civil war and at the beginning of what became known as the surge; and then between August 2009 and August 2010.

During his second tour, his unit, the Second Battalion, Third Infantry Regiment, was involved in a major battle in the city of Najaf while trying to recover a downed Apache helicopter.

On his third deployment, in 2010, a Humvee carrying Sergeant Bales flipped over, possibly because of a roadside bomb, Mr. Browne said. Sergeant Bales injured his head and probably sustained a minor traumatic brain injury, which in chronic cases can lead to cognitive problems, personality changes and a loss of impulse control. Mr. Browne said it was possible that Sergeant Bales also had post-traumatic stress disorder.

Mr. Browne also said the sergeant lost part of a foot in another episode, also apparently from an explosive device. It was not clear whether he might have sustained a second traumatic brain injury then.

Court records show that Sergeant Bales was charged with assault in 2002, but that the charge was dismissed. In 2008, he was charged with a hit-and-run involving a parked car, but that too was dropped, the records indicate.

Though the Army has said nothing about the case, investigators have been poring over Sergeant Bales’s evaluations, health records and computers in search of telltale information. But Mr. Browne said his client’s record was good and that he had been awarded a number of medals.

“He’s never said anything antagonistic about Muslims,” Mr. Browne said. “He’s in general been very mild-mannered.”

Joint Base Lewis-McChord has come under scrutiny because of a string of problems in recent years. In 2010, rogue soldiers from another Stryker brigade murdered three Afghan civilians during combat episodes staged by the soldiers. This year, the Army opened investigations into the base’s Madigan Army Medical Center after soldiers complained that diagnoses of post-traumatic stress disorder were being changed or dismissed.

Some advocates for active-duty troops and veterans say the problems demonstrate that the sprawling base, the Army’s largest on the West Coast, with nearly 40,000 soldiers, was not prepared to handle the strain of repeated deployments. Between 2009 and 2010, when Sergeant Bales was on his third deployment to Iraq, about 18,000 soldiers from the post were sent to war zones, and almost all returned at roughly the same time, overwhelming base services, the critics contend.

But on Friday, the general in charge of managing military bases said that the installation was not under an exceptional amount of strain from multiple deployments and was not seeing an unusual number of crimes or mental health issues, at least when compared with other bases.

“There’s nothing different here than most places,” said Gen. David M. Rodriguez, the commanding general of the United States Army Forces Command. “Again, those things happen. Everybody knows that doesn’t reflect our standards and our values.”

The U.S. soldier accused of killing 16 Afghan civilians grew up in Greater Cincinnati, graduated from Norwood High School and has relatives living in the area.

Tools used by The Enquirer to perform background checks show Staff Sgt. Robert N. Bales, 38, grew up in the 4000 block of Ivanhoe Avenue in Norwood.

Michelle Cadell says she and her brother Micheal Blevins grew up across the street from Bales and knew him as a boy, teen and a young man. But she doesn’t remember him as the kind of person who could massacre Afghan children and other civilians.

“That’s not our Bobby Bales,” said Michelle Cadell.

Bales’ mother has a listed address in Miami Township, Clermont County. Several relatives appear to live in the area, including one in Evendale. None could be reached Friday.

Evendale police issued a statement Friday night asking reporters not to identify the relative who lives there. The home of the Evendale relative was dark and neighbors did not answer their doors Friday night.

A classmate, who preferred to remain anonymous, said he graduated from Norwood High School in 1991 with Bales and the two played on the football team together. He remembered Bales being outgoing and “very intelligent.”

In his senior year, Bales committed to play football at the College of Mount St. Joseph, according to a 1991 report by The Enquirer, though it could not be confirmed Friday night whether he attended the college or graduated from there.

According to his background report, Bales lived in many parts of Ohio, spending time in Fairfield, Cincinnati, Columbus and Westerville, before moving in 2005 to Lake Tapps, Wash.

Bales is being sent to the military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.

He is married with two small children. He lost part of one foot because of injuries suffered in Iraq during one of his three tours of duty there.

Much of what is known about the suspect was disclosed by his lawyer, John Henry Browne, a veteran defense attorney from Seattle who came forward Thursday. Browne said when the 11-year veteran heard he was being sent to Afghanistan late last year, he did not want to go. He also said that a day before the rampage, the soldier saw a comrade’s leg blown off.

Military officials have insisted from the beginning that it is usual procedure to keep a suspect’s identity secret until he is officially charged. They have maintained that stance even after a hearing for the detained soldier Tuesday found probable cause to continue holding him.

Browne says the sergeant is originally from the Midwest. His children are 3 and 4.

The sergeant’s family said they saw no signs of aggression or anger. “They were totally shocked” by accounts of the massacre, Browne said. “He’s never said anything antagonistic about Muslims. He’s in general very mild-mannered.”

The lawyer denied reports that the soldier had marital problems, saying he and his wife have a solid relationship. The suspect’s family has been moved onto the base to protect them, military officials say.

His wife, Karilyn, keeps several blogs, including one that makes reference to the family possibly moving to Kentucky.

“Well we found out yesterday that Bob did not get promoted to E7 this year,” she wrote about a year ago. “It is very disappointing after all of the work Bob has done and all the sacrifices he has made for his love of his country, family and friends. I am sad and disappointed too, but I am also relieved, we can finally move on to the next phase of our lives.

“We are hoping that if we are proactive and ask to go to a location that the Army will allow us to have some control over where we go next,” she wrote. She chose five possible locations the family would like to be assigned to, one of them being Kentucky. “We would at least be near Bob’s family,” she wrote.

The soldier, who received sniper training, is assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, of the 2nd Infantry Division, which is based at Lewis-McChord and has been dispatched to Iraq three times since 2003, military officials say.

During Bales’ time in Iraq, Browne said, the soldier was injured twice. He suffered a concussion in a vehicle accident caused by an improvised explosive device, and sustained a battle-related injury requiring surgery that removed part of one foot. Browne said his client was “highly decorated.”

When he returned to the Seattle area, the staff sergeant at first thought he would not be required to join his unit when it shipped out for Afghanistan, the lawyer said. His family was counting on him staying home.

“He wasn’t thrilled about going on another deployment,” Browne said. “He was told he wasn’t going back, and then he was told he was going.”

The staff sergeant arrived in Afghanistan in December.

On Saturday, the day before the shooting spree, Browne said, the soldier saw his friend’s leg blown off.

Bales has had a few run-ins with the law in Washington in recent years, according to a report by The News Tribune newspaper in Tacoma, Wash.

In 2002 he received a deferred sentence for a misdemeanor criminal assault charge which was “dismissed after Bales completed an anger management assessment, had no other law violations in six months and paid a $300 fine, court records show,” according to the article.

He was also cited in a roll-over crash in Oct. 2008.

MARCH 11, 2012       9:30 PM ET

KentuckySyracuse and North Carolina tried to manufacture some chaos before the brackets came out. Like a group of 7-foot forwards roaming the middle, the members of the NCAA selection committee simply swatted all that noise away.

Even though they lost over the weekend, the Wildcats, Orange and Tar Heels turned out to be what they thought they were: top seeds – all armed with a well-timed bit of humble pie as they gear up for a run through the NCAA tournament they hope will end at the Final Four in New Orleans.

”It’s done now,” Kentucky coach John Calipari said of the 24-game winning streak that ended Sunday with a surprising loss to Vanderbilt in the SEC tournament final. ”Now let’s just go onto these three weekends. We’ve got a weekend in front of us. It’s going to be a bear. Know what? Good. Throw anything you want to at us.”

Michigan State earned the last No. 1 seed and was the only one of the four top-billed teams to win its conference tournament. The Spartans defeated Ohio State 68-64 in the Big Ten title game Sunday – a contest widely viewed as the game for the last No. 1 seed, even if selection committee chairman Jeff Hathaway wouldn’t quite go there.

”As it turned out, this game put the No. 1 seed into the field,” he said.

While No. 2 seeds KansasDukeMissouri and Ohio State wonder whether they could have been rated higher, teams such as Drexel, Seton Hall, Mississippi State and Pac-12 regular-season champion Washington curse what might have been. Those bubble teams were left out, and all will be wondering how Iona, California and South Florida made it.

The Big East led all conferences with nine teams, including defending national champion Connecticut, a dangerous No. 9 seed, conference tournament winner Louisville and, of course, Syracuse, which cruised through most of the season with only one loss.

”I think it’s going to help us a little bit,” coach Jim Boeheim said of the second defeat, Friday to Cincinnati in the Big East tournament. ”I think players, when they’re winning, they kind of excuse their mistakes. I think we finally got their attention. I think they’ll be a better team going forward than they were last week.”

There were 11 at-large teams from the so-called mid-major conferences, four more than last year and the most since 2004 when 12 made it. Though the committee claims not to consider a team’s conference when it picks the bracket, this was nonetheless a nod to the free-for-all this tournament can be. Last year, 4,000-student Butler finished as national runner-up for the second straight season, while VCU, of the Colonial Athletic Conference, went from one of the last teams in the draw, all the way to the Final Four.

Who might this year’s VCU be?

It’s the question being asked across the country, as those $10 and $20-a-pop brackets start getting inked in at spring training sites, corporate board rooms and everywhere else across America. The tournament starts Tuesday with first-round games and gets into full swing Thursday and Saturday, with 64 teams in action.

”There were 112 teams with more than 20 wins,” Hathaway said. ”We talked a lot about parity at the high end of the field and about quality throughout the field. Bottom line, it was about who did you play, where’d you play them and how did you do?”

Some losses, though, were less important than others, and apparently, losing in the conference tournament didn’t cost Syracuse, Kentucky or North Carolina. Those losses could have created chaos in the bracket, but the committee had the teams more or less cemented into top spots.

”Seeding really doesn’t matter too much,” Tar Heels guard P.J. Hairston said after Carolina’s loss to Florida State in the ACC title game Sunday, but before he knew his team would have a `1′ by its name. ”As long as you get in the dance, it’s an equal opportunity to get to the Final Four.”

Led by freshmen Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, either of whom could be one-and-done in Calipari’s turnover-heavy program, the Wildcats are the No. 1 overall seed. Kentucky was placed in the South region and potentially could play six games without having to leave the Southeast.

Kentucky will open its 52nd NCAA tournament appearance in Louisville against the winner of a first-round game between Mississippi Valley State and Western Kentucky, but it gets tougher from there. A possible second-round opponent is UConn, with No. 4 Indiana possibly waiting beyond that. Before Sunday, the Hoosiers – who return to the tournament after a four-year drought – were the only team to beat Kentucky this season.

”The win streak? That’s done now. The fact that we were invincible? That’s done now,” Calipari said. ”We’re going to be in a dogfight. That’s how you have to approach this.”

Second-seeded Duke got serious consideration for moving up to a No. 1, but an 18-point loss to North Carolina in the regular-season finale and a loss to Florida State in the ACC tournament certainly hurt. The Blue Devils are on the same side of the bracket with 11th-seeded Colorado, a team that got snubbed last year but won its way into the bracket this time by taking the Pac-12 tournament.

The Pac-12 was woefully weak this year, placing only two teams and leaving Washington on the outside. This marked the first time the regular-season champion of a power conference got left out.

”Our guys are very, very disappointed, because I don’t think after winning the conference outright they couldn’t see any way we would not be in this tournament in their minds,” Huskies coach Lorenzo Romar said.

In the West, Michigan State will begin its quest for its seventh Final Four since 1999 against No. 16 LIU. The bottom of the West draw features No. 2 Missouri, which won the Big 12 tournament but got penalized for a weak nonconference schedule.

”That hasn’t changed at all over the years,” Hathaway said, when asked whether the committee rewards programs that beef up their schedules.

In the East region, Syracuse opens against UNC Asheville with a possible third-round matchup against Jared Sullinger and Ohio State. Other games include No. 3 Florida State, which went 4-1 against Duke and North Carolina this year, against No. 14 St. Bonaventure, which was a surprise winner of the A-10 conference tournament and took a bubble spot away.

”We had five teams on the board, and we were talking about those five teams all morning and through that game to see where they’d be going,” Hathaway said. ”There was a lot of conversation about those last five teams.”

Among the five Hathaway could have been talking about were Miami, Northwestern, Nevada, Oral Roberts and, of course, Drexel, which missed despite its 27-6 record. All had flaws, as did Iona, though the Gaels’ strength of schedule appeared to carry them through.

”We tried to play teams or conferences ranked above ours, and most of those games we really had to play on the road to get those games,” Iona coach Tim Cluess said. ”We spent seven, eight weeks in a row on the road this year, but those were the teams we had to play to give ourselves a chance.”

Hathaway said the committee gave Kansas heavy consideration as a No. 1 team. The Jayhawks, however, lost to Baylor in the Big 12 semifinals.

”We’re fine with it,” coach Bill Self said. ”I don’t think we deserve to be better than a 2. We may have been if we’d played well in (the Big 12 tournament), but we didn’t. I think after everyone gets through talking about the seeds, it’s about matchups anyway.”

Among the most intriguing would be a Midwest regional final pitting No. 1 North Carolina and former Jayhawks coach Roy Williams against Kansas – a game that would be played in St. Louis.

March 11, 2012

Kentucky has received the NCAA Tournament’s No. 1 overall seed and will serve as the top seed in the South Region. UK will play the winner of the first-round game of Mississippi Valley State (21-12) and Western Kentucky (15-18) on Thursday, March 15 in Louisville, Ky., with a 6:50 p.m. ET tip. The game will air live on TBS with Verne Lundquist and Bill Raftery on the call.

The No. 1 seed is the 11th in school history for the Wildcats, who will play their second and third round games in Louisville. This is just the third time in school history UK will play in the Derby City during the NCAA Tournament. In its last appearance in Louisville, Kentucky defeated Morehead State before losing to Ohio State during the 1961 tournament.

Kentucky has played in its home state on seven previous occasions. UK was last in the Bluegrass State during the 1984 tournament when the Wildcats appeared on their home floor, defeating Louisville and Illinois.

Western Kentucky won the Sun Belt Conference Tournament Championship this year, claiming an automatic bid into the NCAA Championship. UK is 3-2 all-time versus Western Kentucky with the last meeting coming in 2001 when WKU defeated the Wildcats 64-52.

Kentucky and the Hilltoppers have met twice before in the NCAA Tournament with the squads splitting the two meetings. WKU captured a win over the Wildcats during the 1971 tournament, with UK prevailing 71-64 in 1986.

The Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils, coached by former UK letter winner Sean Woods, won the 2012 SWAC Tournament Championship, claiming an automatic bid into the 2012 NCAA Championship. The Wildcats are 3-0 all-time vs. the Delta Devils including an 85-60 win a season ago. A matchup with the Delta Devils during the post-season would be a program first.

If UK prevails over Mississippi Valley State or Western Kentucky, it will face the winner of eighth-seeded Iowa State (22-10) and ninth-seeded UConn (20-13) on Saturday, March 17.

Kentucky is 1-0 during the NCAA Tournament against the Cyclones with the lone victory coming during the 1992 season. UK owns an all-time mark of 2-0 against Iowa State. In addition to the 1992 Tournament game, Kentucky earned a home victory in 1965.

UK has faced the Huskies twice before, dropping both matchups including last season’s 65-55 loss in the Final Four. Connecticut owns an all-time record of 4-1 against Kentucky. UK’s lone victory came during the 2009 season.

Also joining Kentucky in Louisville will be four teams from the West Region including Murray State, Colorado State, Marquette and the winner of the BYU/Iona play-in.

Should the Wildcats advance past the second and third rounds, they will play in Atlanta, in the South Regional Semifinals on March 22-23. If UK continues to win, it will play in the South Regional Finals on March 24-25 with a victory moving the Wildcats to the National Semifinals on March 31. The National Championship game is scheduled for April 2 in New Orleans.

Tickets for the first and second round games in Louisville are sold out with the exception of All-Session packages. However, tickets for Regional Semifinal and Regional Final in Atlanta are available online at ticketmaster.com or available through the host site.

UK will hold a student lottery on Monday, March 12 at 5:00 pm at Memorial Coliseum for the second and third round games in Louisville. Students should refer to the student basketball website for complete details.

Game times and the ensuing schedule of events will not be available from the NCAA until Monday.

Quotes from the NCAA Selection Show Media Opportunity – March 11, 2012

Head Coach John Calipari

On the bracket …
“I really haven’t looked at the bracket, I keep hearing everyone say we are in the toughest region but that’s what was expected. I’m happy we’re not playing on Tuesday. First game will be hard, second game will be like a war and if we are lucky enough to move on from there then it’s one thing after another. They stacked the region and that’s OK, we’ll play all comers now and I imagine where we go there will be a lot of blue. It’s not going to be like, I’ve had teams that had to go to Houston and play Texas in front of 35,000 Texas fans; we had to play Texas A&M in San Antonio in front of 35,000 Aggies so I’ve had stuff thrown at my teams before. It’s fun, I’ve got a good team, and I’m ready to get to work. I’m probably going to give these guys tomorrow off completely, just let them get their senses back and get off the court and get their minds back. I think that’s what I’m going to do, I don’t know if that’s right or wrong. I’m sensing three games in three days; we don’t really need to do anything tomorrow.”

On preparation for Thursday …
“Well the good news is that we don’t really know who we play until Tuesday so to practice Monday and Tuesday we will really just be practicing on our stuff, we won’t be going over anything we have to do vs. them. This team has responded, today, for the first time in the last four minutes of the game we didn’t make shots. I’ll be honest with you, I was stunned and I mean they were wide open shots with no one near and we just missed, that happens. I’d rather it happen now than next weekend or the following weekend or the following weekend, do it now. We had our chances, I watched the tape coming back and marked it off, we were up four with whatever and still up two with whatever and had our chance, missed another wide open one, I was like, ‘wow.’ It was unusual for us but that stuff happens, it was a physical game and they let it go, they let the pushing and shoving go. Hopefully you get in the tournament and all that stuff gets called and we’ll be fine.”

On playing in Louisville …
“I would say that I hope it’s a blue building, I hope Atlanta, if we are lucky enough to move on would be blue, but you don’t know if we can move on because you are talking about one of these two teams that we have to play the first game and then the second game either Iowa State or Connecticut I believe it is. Again, I have not looked at the bracket; I know to that point, who is in Louisville with us. Those are all hard; those are ones we’ll be lucky to win.”

On how their region strikes him …
“Not (well) at all, the only thing I was happy about is I heard that they were trying to get an exemption for the (Miami) Heat to be the second seed in our bracket and they weren’t allowed to get that so they couldn’t put them in there.”

On the potential storylines being coincidental …
“I don’t know, I get disappointed though when I hear the USA Today article where two former chairmen were being derogatory. Which means, how can you really be in those positions and have those feelings towards programs or coaches and then be fair in how you lay this stuff out. It’s disappointing but it’s fine. I have a good basketball team so we’ll see.”

On his relationship with Mississippi Valley State coach Sean Woods …
“Great kid, great coach. He and I have stayed in touch. Obviously we played him here; he’s done a terrific job. We’re all proud of him because he is a good guy. Tony Barbee and him are really good friends. Tony and him are really good friend’s so I’ve known him for a long time.”

On three Kentucky teams playing in Louisville …
“Louisville won their league so I mean we have a lot of good basketball. Morehead, what they did last year, people here take pride in it. I just want to tell you, we were in New Orleans and it was incredible, the whole city was blue. I went to church yesterday, it was blue; I didn’t know there were that many Catholics in Kentucky. This is unique, a unique state and a unique state for basketball.”

On the toughness of winning six sudden-death games …
“I’ve been in this tournament a ton and I know seeds matter. I know because I’ve done this, when someone says it doesn’t matter, seeding matters. The matchups matter because there are some that get a path and then there is another guy that is in foxholes with bazooka shots coming at him and the other guy is running. So all that stuff matters, it is hard for everybody because it is a one and you’re done kind of game. Again, I enjoy going in with good teams and this is a good team, I had a good team last year. I told all you guys, I liked my team, last year. Even when we were losing games I liked my team because I looked around the country and I said, I like my team, I know these other teams are good but I like my team and I was pretty accurate. This year I’d tell you that we have to get our breath back, these last three games in three days, now you know why I don’t like those tournaments. I would have liked to win it today but just three days, one of my cousins hit me and said, ‘it looked like you guys lost some legs at the end of the game,’ and that may have been it, the third game in three days, we hadn’t done that this year. Again, I was begging the guys last night and today, sub yourself, do not stay in their tired. It’s hard for those guys, they are competitors.”

#1 Darius Miller, G, Sr.

On his first reaction to their draw …
“We were just happy to be the No. 1 overall seed especially with us losing today. It was a great feeling for us, we are proud of what we have done, we are proud of our accomplishments.”

On playing in Louisville…
“That should be an advantage to us. I feel like we will have a lot of fans there in Louisville.”

On their region …
“We have some really talented teams in our bracket, some really good teams. We’re going to have to play the best teams eventually, it doesn’t matter when you play them; we are going to have to play them regardless in order to win the championship. We just have to take it one game at a time; the same way we’ve been doing it all season.”

#3 Terrence Jones, F, So.

On their draw …
“It was what we expected, we’re going to have to respect every team that we play and just take it one game at a time.”

On UConn, Indiana and Duke being in their region …
“We have a lot of competition; we have to just take every game serious. We have a lot of motivation behind a lot of games to give ourselves more of an edge, it should just be fun.”

On today’s outcome …
“I’m just excited to be on this team with the opportunity we have, to be able to play in Louisville just right down the street. With the team we have and just being able to play some good teams and hopefully try to get the job done one game at a time.”

On the advantage of playing in Louisville …
“It should be real good. Our fans travel with us wherever we go, but it should make it easier on us and them. It being down the street should make it a real good outcome for us.”

On what he wished he would have known last year in the tournament …
“That the best teams playing the best basketball right now are who wins games, not really who was playing the best basketball throughout the season.”

On getting a “swagger” back by Thursday that they didn’t have this weekend …
“I feel we had it we were just playing teams that had a lot to play for. Playing them three times and for their seasons with the challenge of trying to beat the No. 1 team that swept through the conference regular season. They just played with a lot of energy.”

#14 Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, G, Fr.

On his thoughts about his first NCAA Tournament …
“I’m just very excited now.”

On a potential matchup with Western Kentucky freshman guard Derrick Gordon, who he played high school ball with …
“He’s a brother to me. We’ll see.”
“I haven’t talked to him yet.”

On his feelings leading up to Kentucky’s first game in the NCAA Tournament …
“I can’t wait. I’m just very excited, very excited. It’s a dream come true.”

On what he’s most excited about …
“Trying to win it.”

On what the loss to Vanderbilt on Sunday does for them …
“It’s a lot of motivation for all of us on the team. I’m just ready to play, I’m ready to play.”

#20 Doron Lamb, G, So.

On his thoughts of the draw Kentucky received…
“We got hard teams in our bracket, but we can’t think of it like that. Last year we had the same thing and we still made it to the Final Four. We just have to get prepared and be ready when we play.”

On getting to play close to home…
“That’s a good thing for us. We’re playing in Louisville so we know we’ll have a lot of blue in there.”

On what he thinks the team needs to focus on…
“The main thing is just getting treatment and getting our bodies right for these next couple weeks because right now we are a little sore. We’re tired, we played three games straight – three tough games straight. Our bodies are hurt right now. Tomorrow we’ll get rest and get treatment.”

On coming back home after a loss…
“It hurt us that we lost, we should have won, but things happen. We didn’t make shots tonight. The last eight minutes of the half we just didn’t make any shots, foul shots or anything. That happens, but we can’t worry about that right now. We have to move that game to the past and get ready for who we play next.”

#23 Anthony Davis, F, Fr.

On not watching the Selection Show …
“I was (anxious), I’m not sure if anyone else was. I think everybody else was asleep. I was very anxious just to see. I’ve never been a part of a selection show before. I was just anxious to see how it all happens.”

On having Indiana as a possible Sweet 16 matchup, and Duke as a Regional Final potential matchup …
“They’re two great teams. I definitely want to play them. Indiana is a great ball club, beat us once. Duke is a great ball club – definitely want to play them as well. We’ll see how it all plays out.”

On if Sunday’s loss helps or hurts UK moving forward…
“I think it helps us. I think it motivates us more. I think we have a lot more motivation going into the tournament with a mindset that we have to destroy anybody that we play.”

On ‘the shot’ between Duke and Kentucky and if he knows of its history…
“A little bit. Christian Laettner hit it. I’m just ready to go out there and play, take every opponent and find ways to beat them.”

#25 Marquis Teague, G, Fr.

On playing in Louisville …
“We’re glad we get to play here in the state; our fans can come see us play and its close. We can have a home-court advantage basically.”

On the Vanderbilt loss spurring them on into the tournament …
“We’re not really worried about that loss anymore; we know we have something bigger on our minds now. We’re worried about this tournament and going in and playing our hardest and winning this.”
On what he learned from today …
“I think we played good today, we just missed some shots down the stretch. It wasn’t like we just played bad; we just missed a few shots that we normally make. Yeah it kind of did (surprise me) because we were in the same kind of situation that we have been in. Earlier in the year we hit those shots and today they just didn’t fall.”

On the teams they could play …
“We are taking every team serious; we’re not looking past anybody. We’re going to take it one game at a time and try to focus on that opponent.

#33 Kyle Wiltjer, F, Fr.

On if knowing that they have another game coming up takes away the sting from Sunday’s loss …
“We all hate to lose, but we just want to use it as a learning experience and get ready for these next couple games because they’re going to be big ones.”

On what they learn from Sunday’s loss to Vanderbilt …
“We need to watch film, see where we let up on defense, the balls we didn’t come up and just honing down defensively. I thought we did well on offense executing. We just didn’t make shots. Just watching film and seeing what we need to work on.”

On going through this grind for the first time …
“It’s definitely an eye-opening experience. Just the amount of time we put in shows the work ethic of our team. We all, every day, come in and we bring it. It’s definitely an experience and I’m getting used to it faster than I thought.”

On how big of an advantage it will be to play so close to home and have so many fans there …
“That shows how special BBN (Big Blue Nation) is. We were in the SEC Tournament and it was like a home game. I’m just honored to be a part of it and we’re looking forward to our first round game.”

On what it does for his confidence to be able to contribute the way he did today against Vanderbilt …
“It’s good for my confidence. I knew I could do it; it’s just going in there and utilizing my minutes. I never know when I’m going to go in, but when I go in I just want to make the most out of them. I just want to continue to get better each day in practice and help our team win.”

Actress Jennifer Lawrence

Haven’t you just been overwhelmed with the nonstop marketing hype for The Hunger Games? Me neither, probably because there hasn’t been a ton of stuff coming out about the film since all the casting news died down. Fortunately, we do have this little peek at Jennifer Lawrence doing her archer thing.

Considering that Lionsgate is hoping the $80 million they spent on the adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ best-selling novel pays off by having The Hunger Games become the next blockbuster franchise, the studio has been relatively quiet about getting the word out about the upcoming film. It seems like we were getting Hunger Games news on a daily basis when the cast was being assembled but you can almost hear crickets chirp these days when it comes to promo material for the movie.

The quiet before the storm might be coming to an end, however, with this little photo leading the charge since it was revealed on the Hunger Games Facebook page that a trailer would be popping up sometime this week.

As far as the pic itself goes, it’s nothing we haven’t really seen before, as Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) once again takes aim with bow and arrow in a wooded area. Hopefully, the upcoming trailer will offer a lot more.

The Hunger Games arrives in theaters on March 23, 2012, and the studio is apparently expecting big things because the second title in the series, Catching Fire, already has a release date set for November 22, 2013.

After a long break, the ‘Dhak Dhak’ girl of B-town had been back again this time in a new avatar as she was seen as a judge in the dance reality show ‘Jhalak Dikhla Jaa season 4’.

Madhuri Dixit was seen judging the participants in the show.

Bollywood heart-throb of the 1990s Madhuri Dixit, has always been recognised by her fans for her mind blowing performances in films like ‘Hum Apke Hain Kaun’, ‘Lajja’, ‘Devdas’, ‘Beta’, ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’, ‘Saajan’, ‘Tezaab’.

After her long dominance in the Bollywood, Madhuri finally took a break from films in 2002 after the success of her film ‘Devdas’ where she charmed her fans by portraying the character of ‘Chandramukhi’.

Prior to that she got married in 1999 to US-based doctor Shriram Madhav Nene and cut her film industry commitment.

In 2007 she made a much awaited comeback with the film ‘Aaja Nachle’, but the film did not make significant impact at the box office.

“I am a fan of Madhuri Dixit. Her every dance, every expression, every movement, to me, is very aspirational ; especially expressions, which is very essential for an actor, where one can only try, try and try to get the perfect take,”Bollywood’s leading lady, Katrina Kaif, who is also a huge fan of Dixit had once said about the Bollywood beauty.

“I don’t think there’s anybody like her. She is the most beautiful actress ever to come on screen,” she said.

Ben Affleck has announced the name of his and Jennifer Garner’s baby boy, and guess what? The name is normal!

Actually, the name is Samuel, but in the celebrity baby ranks, “Samuel” is about as normal as it gets.

“We are happy to announce on Feb. 27, Jennifer gave birth to a healthy baby boy, Samuel Garner Affleck,” the new dad said Wednesday on Facebook. News of the baby’s arrival leaked on Tuesday.

Little Sam — we hope they call him Sam — was reportedly born in Santa Monica, and joins older sisters Violet, 6, and Seraphina, 3. Garner and Affleck, who started dating in 2004, got married in June 2005.

Sandra Fluke

March 2, 2012      11:13 a.m.

President Obama weighed in Friday on a mounting controversy over radio provocateur Rush Limbaugh‘s crude comments about Georgetown University law student Sandra Fluke with a phone call expressing his support for Fluke.

Limbaugh has repeatedly called Fluke a “slut” and a “prostitute” for her advocacy for birth control coverage.

Obama “wanted to express his disappointment that she has been the subject of inappropriate personal attacks, and thank her for exercising her rights as a citizen to speak out on an issue of public policy,” White House Spokesman Jay Carney said at a Friday briefing. “It was a very good conversation.”

Fluke had attempted to testify last month at a congressional committee hearing on the Obama administration’s new rule requiring employers to offer health plans that include birth control coverage, but she was excluded from the panel. She testified instead at a mock hearing organized by Democratic lawmakers, in which she advocated for the new policy and said she had a friend who lost an ovary because of lack of contraceptive care.

Limbaugh blasted Fluke on his Wednesday show, saying she had argued that “she must be paid to have sex.”

“What does that make her?” he said. “It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute.”

Democrats seized on the comments. In an email touting the $1.1 million the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee had raised in one week off its “War on Women” campaign, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi called the comments “vicious and inappropriate attacks.”

Limbaugh doubled down on the comments during his Thursday show.

“The reaction that they are having to what I said yesterday about Susan Fluke — or Sandra Fluke, whatever her name is — the Georgetown student who went before a congressional committee and said she’s having so much sex, she’s going broke buying contraceptives and wants us to buy them,” Limbaugh said. “I said, ‘Well, what would you call someone who wants us to pay for her to have sex? What would you call that woman? You’d call ’em a slut, a prostitute or whatever.’”

Carney said Obama felt the comments were “reprehensible, they were disappointing.”

“It is disappointing that those kinds of personal and crude attacks could be leveled against someone like this young law school student who was simply expressing her opinion on a matter of public policy, and doing so with a great deal of poise,” Carney said.

In an interview with NBC’s Andrea Mitchell, Fluke said the phone call “meant a lot.”

“He encouraged me and supported me and thanked me for speaking out about the concerns of American women, and what was really personal for me was that he said to tell my parents that they should be proud,” Fluke said.

Andrew Breitbart

March 1, 2012      6:48 am

Conservative commentator Andrew Breitbart passed away unexpectedly from natural causes early Thursday, his website reported.

Breitbart, 43, a star of the tea party movement, died shortly after midnight in Los Angeles, his website said.

The following statement was posted on Breitbart’s website today:

“With a terrible feeling of pain and loss we announce the passing of Andrew Breitbart.

“We have lost a husband, a father, a son, a brother, a dear friend, a patriot and a happy warrior.”

Breitbart helped launch the Huffington Post. He has worked for the Drudge Report and wrote several books, including “Hollywood Interrupted: Insanity Chic in Babylon — the Case Against Celebrity.” He launched Breitbart.com in 2005, later adding a series of “subsites,” including BigGovernment.com, to counter what he saw as liberal bias in the media.

2 + 1 +2+0+1+2 = 8 = his personal year (from February 1st, 2012 to February 1st, 2013) = Status.  Power.  Control.

8 year + 3 (March) = 11 = his personal month (for March 2012) = Consequences.

11 month + 1 (1st of the month on Thursday March 1st, 2012) = 12 = his personal day = Suspending disbelief.  That’s weird.

————————————————————————————–

Each letter of the first name rules 9 years of life.  Ages 27 to 54 are ruled by the sum of the 4th, 5th, and 6th letters of the name and the day of birth.

Andrew Breitbart       February 1st, 1969

18 (r is the 18th letter of the alphabet) + 5 (e is the 5th letter of the alphabet) + 23 (w is the 23rd letter of the alphabet) + 1 (born on the 1st of the month) = 47

So the number 47 ruled his ages twenty-seven to fifty-four.

47 = Famous.  Internationally known.  Name recognition.
