PHOTO: Micah True, 60, an accomplished ultrarunner featured in the best-selling book "Born To Run," has been missing in New Mexico?s Gila National Forest since Tuesday.

March 31, 2012

They call him Caballo Blanco, the White Horse.

Ultrarunner Micah True, 60, is a legend in the distance running community. He was depicted in Christopher McDougall’s best-selling book, “Born to Run,” in which he took up residence in the remote Copper Canyons of Mexico among the Tarahumara, a desert-dwelling tribe of the best ultrarunners in the world who gave him the moniker.

But True mysteriously disappeared last Tuesday after leaving for what was supposed to be a 12-mile run in southwest New Mexico’s Gila National Forest. Search efforts that were launched on Wednesday have ramped up across the region, The Associated Press reported.

Some 14 search teams — complete with people on horseback, dogs, helicopters and a search plane — set out Friday to find True, and they were joined by hordes of extra volunteers today, New Mexico state police told the AP.

“We’re going to do everything possible to cover as much ground as possible, but it’s already been four days,” state police spokesman Lt. Robert McDonald told the AP. “By no means are we going to give up, but time is of the essence as always in a search and rescue effort.”

True, who lives in Denver, had spent the night at theWilderness Lodge in Gila Hot Springs, N.M., and went running Tuesday morning wearing shorts, a T-shirt and hat and carrying one water bottle, according to Jane Bruemmer, the lodge’s co-owner.

“He goes for a run every day, so it’s not unusual,” she told ABCNews.com. “We just don’t think he had much with him, since he was planning on coming home. We’re perplexed.”

Since True spends part of the year in Urique, Mexico, where he is the race director of the Copper Canyon Ultra Marathon, a 50-mile race across the desert, Bruemmer says he often stays at her lodge while en route to and from Mexico. He runs frequently among the cliff dwellings of the Gila National Forest.

Before True went missing, Bruemmer and her husband were heading to Silver City, N.M., a town about 40 miles away from the lodge, but True had planned to stay until Wednesday, when he was to depart for Phoenix to visit his girlfriend. So the couple bid him goodbye, leaving a friend to watch the lodge while they were away, Bruemmer said.

But the friend told the Bruemmers that True never returned from his run on Tuesday, and that “the guests were worried,” she said. So she and her husband, Dean, called the state police Wednesday morning, and they launched a search in the area, where the temperature can drop below freezing at night.

True had left his dog at the lodge, since he would be running north along Highway 15, which dead-ends at the cliff dwellings, Bruemmer said.

“We don’t know where he was from then on,” she said. “We’re assuming he went off-trail. But this is a huge wilderness.”

Bruemmer said she’s received lots of calls and emails from the ultrarunning community, offering their help with the search, and True’s girlfriend also arrived from Phoenix to join the effort.

True wasn’t known to have any health problems, and Bruemmer suspects he may have become injured. But the search parties “have gone over and over these trails, and on really obscure trails that are barely there anymore,” she said.

People have been known to get lost in the Gila National Forest, because it’s a wilderness area, “so you can get turned around,” she said. “But I wouldn’t have thought it would happen to Micah.”

March 22, 2012        10:27 a.m.

Sanford, Fla., on Thursday braced for what could be its biggest day of demonstrations over the death of Trayvon Martin, the black teenager shot by a neighborhood watch officer, George Zimmerman, last month. For those just catching up to the case that has galvanized the nation — raising legal and social issues about race, guns and self-defense — here’s some background.

What do we know?

The first phase of the case happened the night of Feb. 26.

Martin, 17, was walking back to his father’s house in a gated community in Sanford, a suburb of Orlando, Fla. He had bought a package of Skittles and an iced tea from a convenience store in the city of about 53,000 residents. A majority of the city’s residents are white; just under a third are black.

Zimmerman, 28, was patrolling the neighborhood when he saw Martin. He called police to report his suspicions and then followed the teenager, though police recordings quote the dispatcher as saying he should stay away.

Moments later, Zimmerman — identified as a Latino by his family, and as white by critics of the subsequent investigation — was in a confrontation with Martin, ultimately shooting the unarmed teenager once, killing him.

What happened next?

The controversy begins with the second phase — the aftermath of the shooting.

Local police responded to the incident and questioned Zimmerman; authorities did medical tests on the dead teenager but not on Zimmerman.

According to various reports, police say Zimmerman told them he chased Martin but gave up and was returning to his truck when the teenager attacked him. Police say Zimmerman had blood on the back of his head.

Zimmerman, who is claiming self-defense, was released and has not been charged in the shooting.

What is the family’s position?

The family, backed by national and local civil rights leaders, say that Martin was in danger — as is any other African American teenager out alone after dark, they add. Because of his race, Martin immediately appeared suspicious to a white person on patrol, especially one whose training was far less than that received by professional police.

Further, the family insists, if a black officer had shot a white teen, he would have been charged and held  — and drug and alcohol tests would have been carried out on the officer and not just the victim, who in this case was drug-free.

“They are making it look like Zimmerman is the victim,” Benjamin Crump, attorney for Martin’s parents said of the police, according to several media interviews. “And their son is in the grave. It’s about equal justice.”

What is the local police position?

Police insist they investigated and let Zimmerman go because officers were “prohibited from making an arrest based on the facts and circumstances they had at the time,” including the physical evidence.

“The Sanford Police Department has conducted a complete and fair investigation of this incident,”police chief Bill Lee said in a prepared statement.

What happens next is up to prosecutors who have convened a grand jury for April 10.

What is the law regarding self-defense?

Florida is one of 21 states with some form of a stand-your-ground law allows people to legally use deadly force if they fear for their life.

In general, the laws, backed by gun rights advocates, allow a person to stay and fight rather than flee a confrontation. The laws have different requirements, depending on the state. Some specify that the shooter has to have a legal weapon and has to have a right to be where he or she is.

It will be up to the grand jury to determine if Zimmerman’s self-defense claim meets Florida’s legal tests, including whether Zimmerman had reason to fear for his life during the confrontation.

The Florida version of the law, backed with the support of the National Rifle Assn., was passed in 2005.  According to the Associated Press, Florida Department of Law Enforcement statistics show that, before the law was enacted, there were about 13 so-called justified killings each year by citizens from 2000 to 2005. Between 2006 and 2010, the average has risen to 36 justified killings each year.

Some state lawmakers have already begun to question whether the Florida law is too broad, saying they’re considering legislation that would redefine the grounds under which self-defense could be claimed. Republican Gov. Rick Scott, a conservative elected after the law was passed, told reporters this week he’s open to changes if the Martin case shows there are problems.

What is the federal angle?

Martin’s parents and the Rev. Al Sharpton, the civil rights leader and television personality,  have met with federal officials including the U.S. attorney for the area. Federal officials are investigating the incident to see if there was a hate crime that would allow them to prosecute.

An explosion of social media has catapulted the shooting death of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin into the national spot light, with a single petition calling for his killer’s arrest now the fastest growing petition in internet history, according to Change.org.

Martin, 17, was killed by self-appointed neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman Feb. 26. Just moments before Martin is killed, Zimmerman, who is white, can be heard muttering something in a call to the police dispatcher which many believe was a racial epithet.

Martin, who was black, was carrying only a bag of skittles, ice tea and his cell phone which captured his last seconds in a phone call with his girlfriend before he was shot to death.

Martin’s family says that what the girl heard contradicts Zimmerman’s claim that Martin was acting suspiciously and was the aggressor in their confrontation.

The family has called for Zimmerman to be arrested.

For nearly three weeks the story languished, as did the change.org petition set up for Martin’s parents Sybrina Fulton and Tracey Martin. It had a few thousand signatures, but towards the end of last week, as ABCnews.com other media began intensifying their coverage of the story and celebrities tweeted about it, interest in the story soared.

A host of celebrities from hip hop icon and entrepreneur Russell Simmons to new age leader Deepak Chopra to director Spike Lee have written and tweeted calling for justice for Martin.

Some celebs used their pulpits to drum up awareness while others issued warnings, with Simmons tweeting this last week : “Trayvon Martin didn’t die so we can create a race war he died so we can promote better understanding. We must start honest dialogue.”

Black radio and television hosts have also bouyed the story, calling on authorities to act.

Amid the growing chorus of statements, Florida authorities announced that they would convene a grand jury and the Department of Justice said they would investigate Martin’s shooting as a possible hate crime.

The growing support for the Martin family is seen in the accelerating pace of signatures on the Martin family’s Change.org petition to have Zimmerman arrested.

“The explosive petition to bring justice for Trayvon Martin was started just days ago by his parents and is already the all time fastest-growing petition on Change.org,” the group told ABC News today. “With up to 800 people signing per minute, and 250,000 petition signatures since yesterday morning, the growth is unprecedented.”

So far, nearly 800,000 people have signed the petition.

There are 15,000 petitions launched on Change.org every month, the statement said.

“People worldwide are shocked by Trayvon’s killing, and they’re turning to social media like Change.org and Twitter to turn that outrage into action,” the statement said.

Benjamin Walt-Jaffee of Change.org told ABC News that unlike Facebook, Twitter or Youtube, where a simple click of like indicates support, the signatories of the petition must provide their full name, a functioning email address and home address for their signature to be counted.

The Illinois Lottery says a grand prize Mega Millions winning ticket was sold at a store in Red Bud, Ill., southeast of St. Louis.

This winner, who won with a quick pick ticket according to Illinois lottery officials, is the largest lottery winner in Illinois history at $213.3 million, according to the Illinois Lottery. Red Bud is a community of about 3,700 in Randolph County in southwestern Illinois.

The person who bought the winning ticket at the Moto Mart in Red Bud hasn’t been publicly identified yet, but speculation is running wild, said Denise Metzger, the manager of the gas station and convenience store.

“Everybody’s got their guess,” said Metzger, who spent her morning talking to media outlets including the “Today” show and the BBC. “They’re all kind of watching who’s having a party, checking out who’s having a party in town today.”

Metzger estimated that a third of the town’s residents had stopped by the store this morning.

“The energy here has just been unbelievable,” she said. “Everybody is just really hyped up about this.”

Metzger said the town welcomed the attention, but she hopes the winner was one of the store’s regulars.

“I just think it’s fabulous that it’s happened somewhere small like Red Bud,” she said. “It”s a great boost for this community. I just hope we sold that ticket to that loyal customer who came in and got coffee every day.”

Local paramedic Dan Parrott walked away from the Red Bud store with only $5 in winnings after checking his $40 worth of tickets, not enough for that new house, new car and the new ambulances he’d decided would help him spend the jackpot.

“I’d love to have all that money, but with all of that money comes responsibility,” he said outside the store. “But it’d still be awesome.”

The total $640 million jackpot, largest in the 42-state game’s history, was split among winning tickets in Illinois, Maryland and Kansas, according to the Associated Press.

The winning numbers were 2, 4, 23, 38, 46 and Mega Ball 23.

Twelve second-place tickets were sold in Illinois last night, matching five numbers for $250,000. One ticket had the “Megaplier” feature, upping the prize to $1 million, the agency said.

The $1 million ticket was sold at the 7-Eleven at 1750 West Foster Avenue in Chicago, and other second-place tickets were sold at DM Stores at 222 North LaSalle Street in Chicago, AG 26th Inc. at 3201 W. 26th Street in Chicago, a Jewel on Eola Road in Aurora, a 7-Eleven on Barrington Road in Streamwood, a BP Fast n Fresh on Monee Road in Monee, and stores in East Peoria, Granite City, Minooka, Rochelle, DeKalb, and Rockford.

The estimated jackpot dwarfs the previous $390 million record, which was split in 2007 by two winners who bought tickets in Georgia and New Jersey.

Americans spent nearly $1.5 billion for a chance to hit the jackpot, which amounts to a $462 million lump sum and around $347 million after federal tax withholding. With the jackpot odds at 1 in 176 million, it would cost $176 million to buy up every combination. Under that scenario, the strategy would win $171 million less if your state also withholds taxes.

In Maryland, television cameras were descending on the 7-Eleven in Baltimore Countywhere the state’s winning ticket was purchased. The harried manager could only repeatedly say “No interviews” to the reporters pressing for details, and customers pushed through the media crush for their morning coffee on Saturday.

Nyeri Murphy, holding two scratch-off tickets, said she normally plays Powerball but drove to neighboring Harford County to buy $70 worth of Mega Millions tickets this week. “I should have bought them here,” she said.

None of Jackie Williams’ tickets won, either, but she said it was “fabulous” that a winning ticket was sold near Baltimore city.

“It’s like a small town,” she said. “I’ll bet I’ll know someone who knows the winner.”

Maryland does not require lottery winners to be identified; the Mega Millions winner can claim the prize anonymously. The store will receive a $100,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket, which was purchased Friday night.

The third winning ticket was purchased in northeast Kansas, but no other information would be released by the Kansas Lottery until the winner comes forward, spokeswoman Cara S. Sloan-Ramos said.

No winner had contacted the agency by Saturday morning, Kansas Lottery Director Dennis Wilson said. “Hopefully they’re seeking good advice before coming in,” he said.

Kansas law also allows lottery winners to remain anonymous, though lottery winners in Illinois are identified.

Natasha Alam: Playboy cover – Alam celebrated her addition to the cast of vampire series True Blood by baring it all for Playboy magazine.

The actress graces the cover of the July 2010 issue of the men’s magazine and peels off inside.

The spread marks the second time Alam has stripped for the cameras – her nude scene debut came on the show, in which she’ll play a sexy dancer at the Fangtasia club owned by Alexander Skarsgard’s True Blood character Eric Northman.

Skarsgard gets naked in the scene, too.

And she tells AccessHollywood.com the big reveal on TV was much more nerve-wracking than her Playboy shoot: “When we shot it, I just had a baby. I actually am about 10 pounds overweight in that scene, but I love my boobs! I was still breast feeding so it looked great.

“I had never done nudity before, so I was really, really worried… Alexander helped me so much – he just walked in the room, dropped his robe and he was all out there, no sock, nothing and I was like, ‘Oh, OK… I can do it too.'”

And Alam is thrilled with her new Playboy spread, adding, “I wanted to be in Playboy since… As an actress, it was my dream. My publicist called and (asked) if (I wanted) do it and she was like, ‘I don’t know if we should do it,’ and I was like, ‘Yes!’ I love it.”

A record $540 million Mega Millions lottery jackpot could be won Friday.

March 31, 2012

Record Mega Millions Numbers: 2-4-23-38-46, MB 23

Across the country, Americans plunked down an estimated $1.5 billion on the longest of long shots: an infinitesimally small chance to win what could end up being the single biggest lottery payout the world has ever seen.

The numbers drawn Friday night in Atlanta were 2-4-23-38-46, Mega Ball 23. Lottery officials expected to release details about possible winners a couple of hours after the 11 p.m. Eastern drawing.

Forget about how the $640 million Mega Millions jackpot could change the life of the winner. It’s a collective wager that could fund a presidential campaign several times over, make a dent in struggling state budgets or take away the gas worries and grocery bills for thousands of middle-class citizens.

And it’s a cheap investment for the chance of a big reward, no matter how long the odds — 1 in 176 million.

“Twenty to thirty dollars won’t hurt,” said Elvira Bakken of Las Vegas. “I think it just gives us a chance of maybe winning our dream.”

So what exactly would happen if the country spent that $1.5 billion on something other than a distant dream?

For starters, it could cure the everyday worries of hundreds of thousands of American families hit by the Great Recession. It costs an average of $6,129 to feed the typical family for a year — meaning the cash spent on tickets could fill up the plates of 238,000 households.

As gas prices climb faster than stations can change the numbers on the signs, the money spent on tickets could fill the tanks of 685,000 households annually.

Or it could play politics. So far in this campaign, Republicans and President Barack Obama have spent $348.5 million. The amount spent on Mega Millions tickets could cover that tab four times over.

Could the money dig governments out of debt? That’s a problem that even staggering ticket sales can’t solve. It could trim this year’s expected $1.3 trillion federal deficit by just over a tenth of 1 percent. In Illinois, the money would disappear just as fast into that state’s $8 billion deficit.

On a personal level, that much money staggers. Giving $1.46 billion to a broker could purchase 2.4 million shares of Apple stock. (It would also be enough to buy about 2.4 million iPads at the starting price of $499. That’s almost as many as the 3 million new iPads that Apple has already sold.)

Or consider the whimsical: A family of up to 12 could live for more than a century at Musha Cay, magician David Copperfield’s $37,000-a-night private island resort in the Exuma Cays of the Caribbean.

For a more celestial vacation, the nearly $1.5 billion wagered could purchase about 7,300 tourist tickets for a ride into space aboard Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo. And it would pay for 26 rides for U.S. astronauts to the International Space Station aboard the Russian Soyuz spacecraft.

It would even buy a stake in pop culture. Want to influence the next winner of American Idol? If it costs a quarter to text in a vote to Ryan Seacrest, and it takes 122 million votes to win as it did last season, the money could control the outcome of the next 47 seasons.

For the states that participate, the money spent on lotto tickets is hardly a waste. It doesn’t all end up as the winner’s personal fortune — much of it is used by states to fund education and other social service programs, which is why advocates promote the lottery.

Though the specifics vary among the 42 participating states and the District of Columbia, only about half of ticket sales go into the actual jackpot. Another 35 percent goes to support government services and programs, while the rest funds lottery operating costs.

On Friday, the lottery estimated that total ticket sales for this jackpot, which has been building up since Jan. 28, will be about $1.46 billion, said Kelly Cripe, a spokeswoman for the Texas Lottery Commission.

You’re about 20,000 times more likely to die in a car crash than win the lottery, but that doesn’t matter to most people.

“Part of it is hope. … The average person basically has no chance of making it really big, and buying a lottery ticket is a way of raising the ceiling on what could possibly happen to you, however unlikely it may be,” said George Loewenstein, a professor of economics and psychology at Carnegie Mellon University who has studied how rich and poor consumers make a choice to buy lottery tickets.

The odds are much better that someone will begin their weekend a winner. Aaron Abrams, a mathematician at Emory University, said he calculated that there was only a 6 percent chance that no one would hold the winning numbers.

“Every time the jackpot gets higher, more and more people buy tickets, which makes it more and more likely that someone will win,” Abrams said. “So the chance that it rolls over this many times in a row is very small. It’s quite a rare event.”

The estimated jackpot dwarfs the previous $390 million record, which was split in 2007 by two winners who bought tickets in Georgia and New Jersey.

The rarity of Friday’s jackpot was fueling the fervor. Lines formed at grocery stores, gas stations, liquor stops and other venues across the country.

In Arizona, a café worker reported selling $2,600 worth of tickets to one buyer. In Indiana, hundreds lined up for a giveaway of free tickets. Hundreds from Utah and Las Vegas streamed in to neighboring California or Arizona to buy tickets because their states don’t participate.

Accountant Ray Lousteau, who bought 55 Mega Millions tickets Friday in New Orleans, knows buying that many tickets doesn’t mathematically increase his odds, and that his $55 could have gone elsewhere. He spent it anyway.

“Mathematically, it doesn’t make a difference, and intellectually we know that. But for some reason buying more tickets makes you feel more lucky,” Lousteau said. “Even people who know better are apt to feel that way.”

In Chicago, Peter Muiznieks bought a ticket at a liquor store. He knows his chance of winning is a long shot, and that the money the country is spending on tickets could go elsewhere. He still couldn’t help himself, and laughed as the apparent contradiction of his opinion and his actions.

“Lottery and games of chance are a stupidity tax and the more we all buy into this, the less rational we are as a society,” he said.

After all the hype, there was disappointment in California but joy in Maryland, Kansas and Illinois, where winning Mega Millions tickets were sold for the record $640-million jackpot.

There was a silver lining for California. Twenty-nine tickets sold in the state had five of the numbers and were expected to pay off in the high hundreds of thousands of dollars, said Russ Lopez, a spokesman for the California Lottery, which monitors the game in the state.

Nine of the 29 tickets were sold in Los Angeles County — five in Los Angeles, and one each in Montebello, Long Beach, Hawthorne and El Monte. A five-number ticket was also sold in Anaheim.

Southern Californians wanting in on the historic — if astronomically small — chance to be fabulously wealthy waited in lines for as long as five hours to get a stake in the dream, but many were turned away as their chance of getting to the cash register by Friday’s 7:45 p.m. cutoff closed in.

Thousands of Nevadans drove to neighboring states to get in on the action, because Nevada doesn’t participate in the massive twice-weekly gamble.

According to the Associated Press, Illinois’ winning ticket was sold in the small town of Red Bud, near St. Louis. The winner used a quick pick to select the numbers, Illinois Lottery spokesman Mike Lang said. The Maryland Lottery said it sold a winning ticket at a retail store in Baltimore County. A winning ticket also was purchased in northeast Kansas, according to the Kansas Lottery website, AP said.

The winning numbers were 2-4-23-38-46, and the Mega Ball was 23.

Lottery officials had estimated that there was a 95% chance someone would win the jackpot Friday.
