A 28-year-old software professional was shot dead in a bustling marketplace in Rohini, north Delhi, on Sunday night by two strangers whom he had run into just minutes before. The reason for the rage: the victim had opened a car door carelessly, hitting the two men who were walking by.

The killing will go down into a shameful statistic: 15% of murders in the city take place over “trivial issues”.

The victim, Himangshu Batra, had come to Rohini from Bahadurgarh, to join his friends for a party, outer district police said. Batra and four of his friends had dropped by at the DDA market in sector 17 around 9.45pm to pick up food when the incident occurred.

“We have picked up four locals, all from the propertied class, for questioning, based on the description given by the victim’s friends. The Maruti A-star in which the accused escaped has been recovered, along with the revolver used in the crime. We hope to arrest the accused very soon,” said Chhaya Sharma, DCP (Outer).

Batra used to live in the neighbourhood but had recently moved to Bahadurgarh, where he worked in a factory, Sharma said. “Batra came to Rohini along with his friend Manmeet, a resident of Ballabgarh, on Sunday evening. Around 9.45pm, the deceased and Manmeet accompanied three of his friends — Saurav, Naveen Singh Negi and Gulshan — to a chicken joint.

Manmeet and Batra decided to stay in the car but as it was getting late, Batra decided to tell his friends and return home early. As he opened the rear door of the Wagon R, it hit two young men returning from the hotel,” Sharma said.

An argument began and both sides abused each other in foul language. “As Manmeet tried to interfere, he was pushed and heckled. This infuriated Batra who suddenly lunged at one of the accused. The accused then pulled out an unlicensed weapon and shot thrice at Batra. Two bullets hit his chest,” said Sharma. Batra was rushed to Ambedkar Hospital but he died on the way.

Police said they were questioning the eatery owner, locals and all friends, including Manmeet, for leads. “We have definite leads and we hope for a breakthrough in the next few hours,” said Sharma.

Batra is survived by his parents and an elder sister.
