Rob Rhinehart says his diet is never boring and he actually enjoys eating now. Picture: Matthew Mountford/Rob Rinehart

June 17, 2013              12:29PM

IT may seem a little hard to digest, but a man who hasn’t eaten three solid meals a day in months claims he has stumbled upon the secret to good health — and it doesn’t involve calorie counting and exercise.

But Rob Rhinehart isn’t on a fad diet or starving himself in a bid to lose weight.

He simply wanted to revolutionise his life when he created what he says is a formula which gives his body the exact amount of vitamins and minerals it needs to survive.

Spurned on by a poor diet and lack of time to shop and prepare food, the 24-year-old began researching what his body needed, down to the biochemical level, and made Soylent — a drink mixture of vitamins and minerals which includes calcium, potassium, zinc, vitamins A, B, C, D, E and K.

“I was really tired of eating poorly and wondered why it had to be difficult to obtain healthy food,” he told news.com.au.

“I started seeing food on a biochemical level and developed a new form that is much more efficient and scalable by including only the necessary components — and was surprised to find it worked.”

He swapped his favourite pizzas, burgers and other foods with his Soylent formula for a month and says he begun to enjoy food for the first time as he learned how to eat for pleasure instead of greed.

Mr Rhinehart, who now has Soylent for 90 per cent of his meals, said he believed his formula could be the ideal replacement for unhealthy fast food, or for time-poor people who wanted to avoid the stress of shopping and cooking.

Not to be confused with the 1973 sci-film film Soylent Green in which most of the population lives off rations including one aptly called Soylent Green, Mr Rhinehart’s says his formula may be just as effective in helping solve food shortages.

He admits to still having the occasional craving for a big hearty meal, but says he mostly wants healthy, fresh tasting flavours.

“I still eat, but I have not been to the grocery store, cooked, or cleaned a dish in months,” he said. “I enjoy my favourite foods a few times per week, mostly out with friends on the weekends, which is really all I crave.”

Mr Rhinehart insists his diet is far from boring.

“I assumed I would quickly get tired of the taste but this does not happen,” he writes in his blog.

“It’s really nice to always be full and healthy, and still enjoy food just for fun when I want to.”

And he reckons even the biggest foodie could learn to eat less using a mix of Soylent and prepared meals as people would be left with more time to enjoy the things they want.

“People will find a good balance of Soylent meals and regular meals to ensure maximum enjoyment of food and health. I think it could vastly improve our relationship with food and agriculture,” he said.

But nutritionists warn that such a formula-type diet is not only restrictive, but unsustainable.

Sydney-based nutritionist Susie Burrell said while supplements could be developed to replace the contents of a meal, the reality was that humans enjoyed sitting down to meals.

“While technically you can develop supplements that replace the nutrients content of a meal, which can be used to support weight loss or feed those who do not have access to food, the reality is that human beings like to eat, which is why dietary restriction and meal replacements are not proven to work long term,” she said.

“Claiming such a product can solve the nutrition issues of the world is a simplistic view of very complex issues including obesity, malnutrition, food security, eating behaviour and basic nutrition.”

Nutrition consultant Tracie Hyam said Mr Rhinehart may think he’s learning to eat properly, but that it actually wasn’t the case.

“Meal-replacement shakes can definitely have a place in a weight-loss program or plan, but in the long-term the shakes will not deliver a healthy eating habit for him,” she said, adding there were a lot of other reasons such a diet was far from ideal.

“If his digestive system isn’t used to chewing or digesting food, that one meal a week out with friends might be a big shock to the system,” she said.

“Food in moderation, and definitely nutritious food, is there to be enjoyed. So replacing most meals of the day, is really taking away that enjoyment.”

Mississippi State was slapped with two years probation and docked a few football scholarships Friday for major rule violations involving a booster, an assistant football coach and a prized recruit.

But the school escaped more severe penalties, according to Britton Banowsky, chairman of the NCAA Committee on Infractions, in part because of its proactive cooperation in the case.

The NCAA essentially accepted the school’s self-imposed penalties, including a reduction of two scholarships in 2012-13 and 2013-14; fewer official visits by recruits in 2012-13 and 2013-14; fewer off-campus recruiting opportunities by coaches in 2012-13; and no complimentary admissions for recruits during the Bulldogs’ first two conference home games next season.

The most severe penalty was a one-year “show-cause” order on former Mississippi State receivers coach Angelo Mirando, who was found guilty of unethical conduct. A show-cause order essentially functions as an employment ban.

Although Banowsky, who also is commissioner of Conference USA, called it “a serious case,” harsher sanctions such as a bowl ban weren’t considered because the case was “narrow in scope” and because of the school’s cooperation. He praised Mississippi State for its aggressive internal investigation.

“The university did a great job once they became aware of (the violations), of taking necessary action once they found the scope and severity of the problem and then owning up to it when they got to the hearing (with the Committee on Infractions in April),” Banowsky said, adding, “We wanted to go out of our way to let folks know we were very appreciative of the way the university responded. That’s how it should be.”

The case became public last August, with the sudden resignation of Mirando and subsequent allegations that Robert Denton Herring, a Mississippi State alumnus, had provided cash and gifts to Will Redmond, a highly recruited defensive back from Memphis. NCAA rules prohibit boosters from contact with recruits.

According to the infractions report, the NCAA found that Herring and Redmond exchanged 117 phone calls over a period of several months in 2011 and early 2012, as Mississippi State was recruiting Redmond. The NCAA said Herring provided Redmond with a jacket, a credit card and cash, and that he secured a $2,000 discount on a car for Redmond.

The report also said: “Prior to taking an official visit to a different university, (Herring) told the recruit that if he did not take the visit, the recruit would be paid $6,000.”

Redmond signed with Mississippi State in February 2012. He was ineligible last season and will be ineligible for the first five games next fall. He re-paid $2,660 in impermissible benefits.

Mississippi State formally “disassociated” Herring after learning of the allegations.

The NCAA found Mirando knew of the violations but did not report them to the school or the NCAA. According to the report, Mirando denied knowledge in two interviews with school officials and NCAA investigators, leading to the charge of unethical conduct and the “show-cause” order.

Even that penalty was mitigated, Banowsky said, because of Mirando’s subsequent cooperation with investigators – he admitted to the transgressions a month after his resignation – and his participation in the school’s hearing with the infractions committee. Banowsky said the committee was impressed that Mirando, who could not have been compelled to attend, paid his own way to participate.

Mirando is coaching at Ave Maria University, an NAIA school. The show-cause order, which only applies to NCAA schools, began Friday and runs through June 6, 2014.

“He was very, very forthright in the hearing and took responsibility for his actions,” Banowsky said. “We thought that was mitigating.”

“Had he not assisted the committee…the period of the show-cause would have been longer,” the report said.

Through an attorney, Mirando issued an apology “to Mississippi State University, to the NCAA, and to his family.”

“Angelo has spent a great deal of time reflecting on this matter,” attorney Jay Perry said in a statement. “Specifically he understands that just because he did not encourage, direct or even have contemporaneous knowledge of any improper contact or impermissible benefits, he still had a duty to report it as soon as he learned about the former booster’s wrongdoing.”

No other Mississippi State officials, including head coach Dan Mullen, were implicated. In a release, Mississippi State officials said they will not appeal the NCAA’s decision.

“We’re pleased the Committee on Infractions accepted our self-imposed actions and Mississippi State’s full cooperation,” athletic director Scott Stricklin said in a statement released by the school. “Mississippi State has worked hard to create a culture of compliance focused on being proactive and diligent. Our university worked closely with the NCAA enforcement staff to determine all the facts of the situation and then took necessary steps to protect our school.”

Have you heard about the pizza man cocaine delivery? On Thursday, May 16, a bizarre story hit the Internet about a pizza delivery man who used his job as a cover to make drug sales door-to-door.

According to multiple news outlets like CBS News, a man named Ramon Rodriguez is accused of using his Papa John’s job to make 19 cocaine deliveries around New York City.

Rodriguez was ultimately busted by an undercover police officer, who offered Rodriguez $27,500 in exchange for the drugs.

According to CBS, the alleged criminal used his pizza delivery job as a clever guise to his drug dealing:

“Rodriguez was wearing his Papa John’s uniform when he met the undercover officer outside the restaurant’s Sunset Park location Wednesday night. After meeting the officer, Rodriguez went back into the shop and came out carrying a bag, pizza box and a chicken nuggets box, according to authorities.”

The pizza box, of course, didn’t contain any cheese, pepperoni, or mushrooms. Instead, the pizza box held a kilo of cocaine.

It is believed that Rodriguez would either deliver the drugs to certain buyers while on the job in uniform, or he would skip out on his job temporarily to make a cocaine delivery.

If convicted, Rodriguez of course will be looking at serious jail time. Rodriguez is 45-years-old.

The International Space Station is once again leaking ammonia from a cooling system, NASA said Thursday in a news release.

The crew is not in danger, NASA said.

The space station crew reported seeing small white flakes floating away from the station, the space agency said, So NASA helped locate the leak with external cameras while the crew used hand-held cameras pointed out windows.

The leak was in a cooling loop in a solar array that has leaked before. NASA said crew members tried to fix the leak in November. It is unclear whether this is the same leak or a new one.

The cooling system could shut down within 24 hours, NASA said. It is devising a plan to reroute other sources of power.

Three crew members — commander Chris Hadfield of Canada, NASA astronaut Tom Marshburn and Russian cosmonaut Roman Romanenko — are scheduled to leave the station on Monday at 7:08 p.m. ET.

Hadfield asked NASA if the leak will affect the undocking. Capsule Communicator Doug Wheelock said officials at the Mission Control Center in Houston don’t see anything that they can’t overcome technically, but they would have more information in the morning.

The three young men charged with helping a suspect in last month’s fatal bombing attack at the Boston Marathon cover his tracks were handed into the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service after their initial court appearance on Wednesday.

Kazakhstani nationals Azamat Tazhayakov, 19, and Dias Kadyrbayev, 19, were earlier charged with conspiring to obstruct justice and the third man, a U.S. citizen named Robel Phillipos, was charged with making false statements to investigators.

Two of the men were university classmates of 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who last week was criminally charged with planting homemade pressure-cooker bombs at the marathon finish line on April 15 along with his older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev.

Papers filed in federal court said authorities charged tTazhayakov and Kadyrbayev with throwing away a backpack containing fireworks and a laptop computer belonging to alleged bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

Tsarnaev, who attended the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, is being held at a prison hospital where he is recovering from gunshot wound sustained in a gun battle with police. His older brother died in the gunfight.

Last week law enforcement officials were seen searching dumps in southeastern Massachusetts.

Kadyrbayev’s lawyer said his client was being held for violations of his student visa.

The lawyer, Robert Stahl, said his client was “not a target” of the bombing investigation, but declined to comment on any other specifics. He said his client had “cooperated fully” with investigators and “wants to go home to Kazakhstan.”

The parents of the Tsarnaev brothers have said in interviews in the North Caucasus region of Russia that they do not believe their sons were responsible for placing the bombs.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s body has still not been claimed, a spokesman for the state’s chief medical examiner said. His widow, Katherine Russell, on Tuesday said she wanted the medical examiner to release her husband’s body to his family.

The city of Chicago is reviewing the case of a single, unemployed mother saddled with the biggest parking fine in city history after she filed a lawsuit claiming that her ex-boyfriend was to blame for all the tickets.

Jennifer Fitzgerald owes Chicago a whopping $105,000 after a 1999 Chevy Monte Carlo – a used car that was bought for $600 and registered in her name – was parked at O’Hare Airport for three years starting in November 2009. It was parked there by Fitzgerald’s ex, Brandon Preveau, according to a civil suit Fitzgerald has filed.

In the suit, filed against Preveau, United Airlines, and the city of Chicago, Fitzgerald contends that she should not be liable for the tickets. According to the court papers, Fitzgerald “was never the owner of the [automobile]… had no control over the [automobile] when the parking tickets were issued… [and] is not responsible for the parking tickets issued on the [automobile].”

Roderick Drew, a spokesman for the city of Chicago, told ABC News today, “The case is being reviewed and we will work with the young lady to come to a fair solution, based on the facts of the case.”

Fitzgerald’s attorney Robin Omahana told ABC News, “We’re sort of throwing her on the mercy of the court.”

There is a court date in May, but Omahana said, “We’re hopeful that with or without the judge’s help we’ll be able to resolve it. We put forth the story and we’re looking for some help from the court.”

The lawyer said he hopes to hear from the city or from the ex-boyfriend.

“I’m happy to listen to them whenever they call me,” Omahana said, although so far neither has called.

Drew said it is the city’s understanding that the car was parked in the United Airlines’ lot at O’Hare Airport. Preveau works for United Airlines.

“The operator of the vehicle was a badged employee for United Airlines and therefore had authorization to park there while working,” Drew said. “It is also our understanding that the employee moved this vehicle a number of times in this United lot and that tickets being affixed to the vehicle were periodically removed. Therefore, a stack of tickets was not accruing on the vehicle.”

According to the Chicago Department of Aviation, posted signs at the O’Hare lots note that if a vehicle is in a lot for more than 30 days without the lot operators being notified, then the company will attempt to contact the owner, but if the owner cannot be contacted, the vehicle will be towed to another lot before eventually being towed to the city impound lot as an abandoned vehicle.

Numerous calls from ABC News to Fitzgerald and Preveau were not answered.

According to a copy of the lawsuit obtained by ABC News, Fitzgerald and Preveau dated for several years and had a daughter, named Zoe, together. While the couple was dating, Preveau in early 2008 purchased the purple Monte Carlo from Fitzgerald’s uncle Patrick Fitzgerald, using his 2007 income tax refund to pay $600 for the car.

Although Preveau was the car’s “principal driver,” he signed the title of the car to Jennifer. Sometime in November 2009, Preveau – no longer dating Fitzgerald – parked the car in United’s lot at O’Hare and the car that day started racking up tickets, marked as “hazardous” and “dilapidated” and, eventually, for being left in the lot for over 30 days.

The verdict is in: Global warming is occurring and emissions of greenhouse gases caused by human activity are the main cause.

This, according to Richard A. Muller, professor of physics at UC Berkeley, MacArthur Fellow and co-founder of the Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature project. Never mind that the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and hundreds of other climatologists around the world came to such conclusions years ago. The difference now is the source: Muller is a long-standing, colorful critic of prevailing climate science, and the Berkeley project was heavily funded by the Charles Koch Charitable Foundation, which, along with its libertarian petrochemical billionaire founder Charles G. Koch, has a considerable history of backing groups that deny climate change.

In an opinion piece in Saturday’s New York Times titled “The Conversion of a Climate-Change Skeptic,” Muller writes: “Three years ago I identified problems in previous climate studies that, in my mind, threw doubt on the very existence of global warming. Last year, following an intensive research effort involving a dozen scientists, I concluded that global warming was real and that the prior estimates of the rate of warming were correct. I’m now going a step further: Humans are almost entirely the cause.”

The Berkeley project’s research has shown, Muller says, “that the average temperature of the Earth’s land has risen by two and a half degrees Fahrenheit over the past 250 years, including an increase of one and a half degrees over the most recent 50 years. Moreover, it appears likely that essentially all of this increase results from the human emission of greenhouse gases.”

He calls his stance now “a total turnaround.”

[Updated, 4:17 p.m., July 29: Tonya Mullins, a spokeswoman for the Koch Foundation, said the support her foundation provided, along with others, had no bearing on the results of the research. “Our grants are designed to promote independent research; as such, recipients hold full control over their findings,” Mullins said in an email. “In this support, we strive to benefit society by promoting discovery and informing public policy.”]

Some leading climate scientists welcomed Muller’s comments, proof, they argued, that the science is so strong that even those inclined to reject it cannot once they examine it carefully.  Michael E. Mann, director of the Earth System Science Center at Pennsylvania State University, said that Muller’s conversion might help shape the thinking of the “reasonable middle” of the population “who are genuinely confused and have been honestly taken in” by attacks on climate science.

On his Facebook page, Mann wrote: “There is a certain ironic satisfaction in seeing a study funded by the Koch Brothers – the greatest funders of climate change denial and disinformation on the planet – demonstrate what scientists have known with some degree of confidence for nearly two decades: that the globe is indeed warming, and that this warming can only be explained by human-caused increases in greenhouse gas concentrations. I applaud Muller and his colleagues for acting as any good scientists would, following where their analyses led them, without regard for the possible political repercussions.”

Muller’s conclusions, however, failed to sway the most ardent climate contrarians, like Marc Morano, a former top producer for Rush Limbaugh and communications director for theRepublicans on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee who now runs the website climatedepot.com.  “Muller will be remembered as a befuddled professor who has yet to figure out how to separate climate science from his media antics. His latest claims provide no new insight into the climate science debate,” Morano said in an email.

Muller’s New York Times commentary follows research he did last year that confirmed the work of scientists who found the Earth’s temperature was rising. In the past, Muller had criticized which global temperatures were used in such research, contending that some monitoring stations provided inaccurate data.  Now, Berkeley’s research has weighed in on the causes of the temperature rise, testing arguments climate contrarians have used.

“What has caused the gradual but systematic rise of two and a half degrees?” Muller writes. “We tried fitting the shape to simple math functions (exponentials, polynomials), to solar activity and even to rising functions like world population. By far the best match was to the record of atmospheric carbon dioxide, measured from atmospheric samples and air trapped in polar ice.”

Muller asserted that his findings were ‘stronger’ than those of the U.N.’s Intergovernmental  panel. Yet,  neither Berkeley’s research from last year or the new findings on causality have been published in peer-reviewed journals, which has raised criticism and concerns among climatologists and contrarians alike.

Benjamin D. Santer, a climate researcher at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and a lead author of the 1995 U.N. climate report, said he welcomed the involvement of another research group into “detection and attribution” of climate change and its causes. But he also said he found it troubling that Muller claimed such definitive results without his work undergoing peer-review.

“If you go into the public arena and claim to have generated evidence that is stronger than the IPCC, where is the detailed, scientific evidence? Has he used fundamental new data sets?” Santer said. “Publish the science and report on it after it’s done.”

He added: “I think you can do great harm to the broader debate. Imagine this scenario: that he makes these great claims and the papers aren’t published? This (op-ed) is in the spirit of publicity, not the spirit of science.”

Elizabeth Muller, co-founder and executive director of the Berkeley project and Richard Muller’s daughter, said the papers had been peer-reviewed, but not yet published. But because of the long lead-up to publication, the Berkeley team decided to place its papers online, in part to solicit comment from other scientists. She said all the papers, including the latest, would be on the BerkeleyEarth.org website by Sunday evening.

“I believe the findings in our papers are too important to wait for the year or longer that it could take to complete the journal review process,” Elizabeth Muller wrote in an email. “We believe in traditional peer review; we welcome feedback [from] the public and any scientists who are interested in taking the time to make thoughtful comments. Our papers have received scrutiny by dozens of top scientists, not just the two or three that typically are called upon by journalists.”

The B.C. coroner has identified the 11-year-old boy killed Friday in a violent windstorm as Richard Fehr, of Christina Lake, B.C.

Fehr and a camp counsellor had taken shelter in one of the sleeping cabins at Pines Bible Camp near Grand Forks, B.C., when winds began to gust up to 100 km/h, blowing down trees, said camp executive director Gene Krahn.

“The camper asked [the counsellor] ‘Am I going to be safe here?’ and he goes ‘I think so.’ And he just looked out the door of the cabin to see, kind of assess the situation of where they should go,” said Krahn.

“As he did that, the tree fell on the cabin and essentially pushed that cabin leader out the door where he sustained a couple injuries on his back and unfortunately crushed the cabin that the camper was in.”

Krahn says Fehr had camped with them in the past.

“He enjoyed camp and so he was very excited to come back,” he said.

The camp will hold a healing event Tuesday evening at the Pines Bible Camp site.

“We’re inviting all the campers who were there this past week and their families to spend some time just to see and reflect. It’s an opportunity for campers to be able to process, with their families, this traumatic event,” said Krahn.

He says grief and trauma counsellors will be on hand to talk with campers and the boy’s family and friends.

Krahn said more than half the buildings at the camp are damaged. He said an insurance company has looked at the site, but a dollar value has not yet been put on the wreckage.

Friday June 29, 2012                    3:12am EDT

Embattled San Francisco Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi, seeking reinstatement to his job after his conviction in a spousal-abuse case, told a city ethics commission he could still lead his law-enforcement agency by the example of his “redeeming behavior.”

Mirkarimi testified before the panel on Thursday night in misconduct proceedings initiated against him by Mayor Ed Lee, who suspended the sheriff in March after the lawman pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of illegally restraining his wife.

The case grew out of a December 31 argument between Mirkarimi and his spouse, Venezuelan soap opera actress Eliana Lopez, over her plans to take their young son, Theo, to her home country.

In a cell phone video a neighbor took the next day, Lopez tearfully claimed her husband had grabbed her arm with such force that he left it black and blue. She said it was the second time he had hurt her.

The ensuing prosecution of Mirkarimi, a former member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and co-founder of California’s Green Party, rocked the city’s political establishment.

On January 13, five days after he was sworn in as sheriff, Mirkarimi was charged with misdemeanor counts of domestic violence battery, child endangerment and dissuading a witness.

His subsequent deal with prosecutors to plead guilty to a single, lesser charge was structured to allow Mirkarimi to keep his badge and his gun. The sheriff was sentenced to a day in jail, which he has already served, and three years of probation.

But the mayor decided Mirkarimi’s conduct amounted to a violation of the public trust and his role as a law enforcement officer, and has asked the city ethics commission to recommend dismissal of the sheriff.

Mirkarimi was called to appear Thursday as the first witness to testify in person before the five-member body, which began a series of hearings last week expected to stretch well into July. Previous witnesses in the case before the panel have presented written declarations.

Under questioning by the city attorney, who represents the mayor in the case, Mirkarimi acknowledged wrongdoing but said he never intentionally hurt his wife or any other woman.

“I grabbed my wife’s arm and bruised it, something I regret terribly,” he said. “I did it, and I take full responsibility. I reacted intensely to a quarrel, and I was wrong.”

Asked whether he believed he could still effectively serve as the city’s top elected law enforcement officer, Mirkarimi replied: “If the sheriff can demonstrate redeeming behavior, some of the employees may have that possibility too.”

He is scheduled to resume his testimony on Friday.

Lopez refused to testify against her husband in the criminal case but filed a written statement earlier this week in the ethics proceedings, saying her husband “never hit me, punched me, battered me or beat me”.

The sheriff’s lawyers argue the mayor has overstepped his authority by seeking Mirkarimi’s removal through a public ethics investigation.

The ethics panel will render a recommendation on the case, but the Board of Supervisors will ultimately decide whether to strip the sheriff of his badge.

Gunman: Off-duty officer Richard Klementovich, pictured, is barricaded inside the house of his estranged wife and has been shooting at police

20:01 EST              17 June 2012

An off-duty New Jersey police officer remains barricaded inside his estranged wife’s house where he has been sporadically shooting at police since around 2pm today.

Richard Klementovich, 42, an officer with Clifton police department, is alone in the Doylestown, Pennsylvania, property and has 2,000 rounds of ammunition and multiple weapons, including rifles and sniper guns.

Neighbours were told to stay in their homes, preferably hiding in their basements with doors locked and shades drawn. Some were told to evacuate.

Police from various departments including Clifton, and SWAT teams are trying to negotiate with the gunman. According to ABC News, officers have been told that if they get a clear shot at him they should take it.

‘We don’t want to incite this gentleman any more than he is,’ said Pennridge Regional Police chief Dave Mettin.

‘We’re hoping for a successful end with the safety of residents . . . officers and Mr Klementovich.’

A bitter divorce battle may be the motive for the shooting.

Police said Mr Klementovich contacted his wife, Jill, earlier on Sunday to meet her and their two children elsewhere but instead of meeting them, he entered his wife’s empty home and barricaded himself inside.

According to Philly.com, Mr Klementovich had sent a text to his wife threatening to kill himself before he started firing at police.

Doylestown police were called to 25 Bittersweet Drive at 1.44pm for a ‘neighbour dispute’ but minutes after they arrived, Mr Klementovich started firing at officers.

SWAT: Authorities climbed through the backyard of a Doylestown home two houses away from where the off-duty police officer was holed upSWAT: Authorities climbed through the backyard of a Doylestown home two houses away from where the off-duty police officer was holed up

Mr Mettin said the shots struck one officer, two police cars and an armored personnel carrier. The injured officer has been identified as Cpl. C. William Doucette from Doylestown Borough.

Mr Doucette was struck in the face with shrapnel after a bullet had struck a curb. He was taken to hospital but has been released.

Neighbours Richard and Marie Enright said they heard two bursts of gunfire, the first around 2.30pm and the second about 4pm.

They said that after the first round of shots police knocked on their door and told them to leave.

‘I heard 10 to 20 shots,’ Mr Richard Enright told Philly.com.

The neighbourhood was filled with police cars and SWAT vans.

Nearby roads have been closed off and emergency radio channels have requested airspace in the area be cleared up to 30,000 feet within a 30-mile radius of the scene.

At 6.25pm, the Bucks County’s Emergency Alert System warned residents to remain in their basements.

‘The situation with the armed subject on Bittersweet Drive continues,’ the message said.

‘Police officers are working to resolve the situation. Residents in the neighborhood near the intersection of Windsor way should shelter in place in the basement, it is the safest place. Also ensure that your doors are locked.’

Police said about 9.30pm that they would begin evacuating people who are still in their homes, especially children.

Negotiators apparently were in touch with him through cell phones or other communication devices.

Dave Boerner, who lives two houses down from the shooter, told phillyburbs.com that he was on his way home from the New Jersey shore when his wife contacted him, saying police had told her to go into their basement with her two kids.

‘I’ve been trying to go home,’ Mr Boerner said. ‘I feel helpless.’

Brian O’Conell was on his way home from a Father’s Day dinner with his 12-year-old son, when a SWAT van pulled up behind him, according to the news website.

‘It scared the hell out of my son,’ he said.

He was turned away from his home and was waiting at a police barricade for updates along with a crowd of other neighbors.

‘This neighborhood is ultra safe,’ he said. ‘We’ve never had anything like this happen before.’

According to nj.com, Mr Klementovich was a U.S. Army veteran and served in the Persian Gulf War as a member of the 82nd Airborne Division. He has been in law enforcement for 18 years.

Officials with Doylestown Township are trying to arrange hotel accommodations for displaced residents and advised those with medical needs to go to Doylestown Hospital.

A 21-year-old college student accused of killing a housemate told police he ate the victim’s heart and part of his brain after he died.

Alexander Kinyua hid the head and hands of the dead man in his family’s basement laundry room in a suburb of Baltimore, according to the Harford County Sheriff’s Office. Kinyua, a student at Morgan State University, was charged earlier in May in another attack in which the victim was brutally beaten but survived.

Kinyua, a Kenya native, is charged with first-degree murder and other charges in the death of 37-year-old Kujoe Bonsafo Agyei-Kodie. He was ordered held on no bail.

His public defender did not return a call seeking comment, and a voicemail left at Kinyua’s home was not returned.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Monica Worrell said the chief medical examiner had not yet officially identified the body parts, but that authorities believe they are those of Kodie, who was reported missing May 25. His cellphone and wallet were left in the home and police were initially told he had gone for a run.

On Tuesday, Kinyua’s father, Antony Kinyua, called detectives and reported that another son, Jarrod, found what he thought were human remains in the house where they all lived in Joppatowne.

Jarrod found two metal tins, which held a human head and two human hands. Police say Jarrod confronted his brother, who said the remains were animals.

According to charging documents, Jarrod and his father went to the basement, where Jarrod “observed that the items he observed were gone and Alex Kinyua was cleaning the container he observed them in.”

Detectives obtained a search warrant and found the head and hands in the house. Police say Alexander Kinyua admitted to killing Kodie by cutting him up with a knife and eating his heart and part of his brain.

Authorities say Kinyua told detectives the rest of the body could be found in a trash container at the Town Baptist Church in Harford County where they discovered remains.

The attack comes in the same week as a man in Miami chewed away another man’s face along a busy highway and wouldn’t stop until an officer shot him to death. Witnesses say 31-year-old Rudy Eugene growled at the officer and continued to chew away. The victim, identified as 65-year-old Ronald Poppo, a homeless man who lived under the causeway, was in critical condition and will be permanently disfigured.

On May 19, Kinyua beat a man with a baseball bat on Morgan’s campus, fracturing his skull and making him lose sight in one eye, according to Baltimore police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.

Kinyua was arrested May 20 and released on $220,000 bail.

Morgan officials say Kinyua studied electrical engineering and was also in the ROTC.

According to court records, the victim, Kodie, a native of Ghana, was convicted in November 2008 in Baltimore County of sex offense and assault in September 2007 and harassment, stalking and telephone misuse for making repeated calls in 2007 and 2008 to a woman. He was sentenced to at least a year and a half in jail.

Anneka Vasta

October 31, 2011      7:34 am

A former Penthouse model whose body washed ashore at Camp Pendleton earlier
this year does not appear to be the victim of a homicide or sexual assault, but
many aspects of her case — including a bloody knife — remain a mystery,
investigators said.

The body of 58-year-old Anneka Vasta, also known as Anneka Di Lorenzo, was
found Jan. 4 on Gold Beach. An autopsy later concluded that she had suffered a
broken neck and back before she drowned.

But it remains unclear how Vasta got down to the beach from a 50-foot-tall
bluff and why she had checked in to a motel in Carlsbad. Her car was found at
the scenic overlook.

A knife with a small bit of blood on it was found in her car. Vasta’s body
had superficial cuts on the wrists and two shallow wounds on her chest, which
may have come from a failed attempt at suicide, according to the autopsy.

Jason Keller, special agent with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service,
and fellow agent Rachel McGranaghan said that nothing in numerous interviews
with Vasta’s friends and relatives suggested that the Sherman Oaks resident had
met with foul play.

Vasta was Penthouse Pet of the Year in 1975 and then had a brief career in
movies. She dated Penthouse publisher Bob Guccione but later sued him for sexual
harassment. He reportedly retaliated by publishing pictures of her in a lesbian
love scene from one of her movies.

In recent years, however, Vasta had had financial problems and was
“emotionally fragile,” the investigators said.

She was found naked, face down in the sand on a stretch of beach used by the
Marine Corps for training. Because the death occurred on military property, the
NCIS launched an investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call (760 725-5150).
