Misfortune has fallen upon a family of fortune tellers in Florida and New York who have been charged with swindling $40 million over the past 20 years from customers looking to cure illnesses, end spells of bad luck or mend broken relationships.

Since 1991, the family has been telling customers that “money is the root of all evil,” according to an indictment released Tuesday, convincing people to hand over huge sums of money, jewelry and other valuables that needed to be “purged” before being returned.

And for 20 years, the alleged scheme worked.

The indictment claims the family amassed a Florida home, a yacht and over $1.8 million in gold coins. The rundown also identifies 14 cars—including four Mercedes Benz, a BMW, a Rolls Royce and a Bentley. Two Harley Davidson motorcycles were also part of the loot list.

Fortune Telling Fraud Netted $40 Million, Cops Charge

The Florida relatives arrested Tuesday were Rose Marks, 60; Cynthia Miller, 33; Rosie Marks, 36; Vivian Marks, 21; Michael Marks 33; and Donnie Eli, 38. In New York, Nancy Marks, 42, and Ricky Marks, 39, were arrested on Tuesday.

Police, who dubbed their investigation “Operation Crystal Ball,” are still searching for family member Victoria Eli, 65, who lives in both Florida and New Jersey. A co-conspirator named Peter Wolofsky, 84, was also arrested. Wolofsky was charged with laundering money on behalf of the family through his own business.

The family members are all related either by blood or marriage and many used false names in their practices.

The 61-count indictment includes charges of conspiracy, mail fraud, wire fraud and money laundering.

The allegedly fraudulent psychics performed Tarot card readings, palm reading, astrology readings, numerology readings and spiritual readings.

The indictment alleges that the family “told clients that they and their family members or friends would contract terrible diseases, suffer horrible financial hardships, and endure terrible catastrophes, and that loved ones who were already sick would not recover, and that their lives would remain haunted by evil spirits if they did not cleanse their money of those evil spirits.”

Fortune Teller Family Fortune Was Illegal, Cops Say

Identifying victims only with initials, the indictment tells the story of several scenarios where people were taken advantage of.

In one instance, a woman identified as L.B. was told by Nancy Marks that she had to purchase a Cartier watch. Once L.B. bought the watch, Marks told her that “she needed to work on the watch to turn back time and bring love back to L.B.” She turned over the watch on a promise she would get it back after the work was done, but never got the watch back.

In another scam, an alleged victim identified as S.K. told Cynthia Miller that he was hearing voices in his head due to extreme stress. Miller told him that she would speak with Michael the Archangel to find out what S.K. needed to do, and the alleged message was that S.K. needed to make sacrifices, “The sacrifice called for 32 gold coins because S.K. was 32 years old and [Miller] needed a gold coin for each year S.K. did not have faith.” S.K. gave Miller $400,000 in gold coins.

Numerous other scenarios involve alleged family curses, some as old as 250 years, that could only be remedied by cleansing of money and valuables.

Joseph LoBrutto III is a well-known psychic in Florida who has been featured in newspapers and profiled on television. LoBrutto said it can be easy to be taken advantage of by false psychics and that research or references from new-age stores can be ways of avoiding scams.

“The big red flag is keeping you coming back. It should be just that one reading,” LoBrutto said. “And if they say it’s a curse or a hex, there’s no such thing. Walk out.”

LoBrutto is appalled by the behavior of the group. “It’s a shame. It really ruins our reputation,” he said. “Psychics are made out to be crazy and this doesn’t help.”

The pre-trial detention hearing for the Florida family members is scheduled for Friday and the New York relatives will be in court Thursday. A court clerk at the federal courthouse in Fort Lauderdale said that all of the defendants are in currently in custody and do not have an attorney yet.

There’s a new face in Hollywood starting to get a lot of attention, a teenager sharing the screen with some heavyweight co-stars.

Hailee Steinfeld is already up for Screen Actors Guild and for Critics’ Choice movie awards. And she just turned 14.

Hailee Steinfeld was 13 when she beat out thousands of other hopefuls to star opposite Jeff Bridges in the Coen brothers version of “True Grit.”

She credits them and the film’s other actors with helping her give a better performance.

“What was so great about them is there was never a moment that I felt I couldn’t ask a question and I was always asking questions,” said Steinfeld.

“Oh, she’s somebody to watch, huh? I’m going to be really tracking that girl. She’s something,” said Jeff Bridges.

“It’s a tough role that she’s got,” said Bridges. “It would be a challenge for a seasoned actor, let alone a 13-year-old who’s never done a movie.”

Before Steinfeld was hired, the massive search was narrowed down to five girls for one final screen test.

“So we didn’t know who Hailee was,” said co-star Barry Peppers. “She just came in and she had eight pages of this Shakespeare-an Western dialogue memorized, and she’s reading opposite Jeff and the Coen brothers, and it was extraordinary.”

“Thank you, Barry, for that but I was freaking out,” said Steinfeld. “I mean, it was an excited kind of nervous, you know? I really felt like I was prepared and really ready to go for it.”

“She just nailed it so when she left, everybody looked at each other and said, ‘Definitely, she’s the one,'” said Pepper.

“I’m living my dream really and I’m so, so honored and so blessed. So I’m happy,” said Steinfeld.

By the way, Steinfeld’s a local girl — she’s from Thousand Oaks.

“True Grit” is in theaters now.

Dan Connolly, a 315-pound offensive lineman on the Patriots, ran a kickoff late in the first half back 71-yards to set up a touchdown. On a record-setting day when DeSean Jackson had the NFL’s first “walk-off” punt return touchdown, Connolly has unofficially set a record for longest kickoff return in NFL history by anyone over 300 pounds.

The Patriots needed an offensive spark in the first half last night against the Green Bay Packers. But who knew it would be offensive lineman Dan Connolly who provided it?

The 6-foot-4, 313-pound Connolly fielded a kickoff late in the first half after its second hop, corralled it, and raced forward. Suddenly, he had nothing but field turf in front of him.

The result was a startling 71-yard kickoff return that put the Patriots on the 4-yard line with 2:04 left in the half. Looking like a shifty running back, Connolly brought the Gillette Stadium crowd to its feet.

Quarterback Tom Brady made the return count with a 2-yard touchdown pass to tight end Aaron Hernandez in the 31-27 victory.

The fact that Connolly set the score up with his run sent the social media world into a frenzy. His name was all over Twitter within seconds, as national media members searched his bio online. The video of his run — which included a stiff-arm of Packers safety Charlie Peprah — was posted immediately all over the web.

It was the longest kickoff return by an offensive lineman in NFL history. The team’s previous high was a Stephen Neal 27-yarder. As for Connolly, his previous long was 16 yards.

Susan Philipsz has won this year’s Turner Prize for a sound installation that features her singing three versions of a Scottish lament.

The Glasgow-born artist, 45, was presented with the £25,000 prize at a ceremony at Tate Britain.

Philipsz beat Dexter Dalwood, Angela de la Cruz and The Otolith Group to take the prestigious award.

It was the first time a sound installation had been nominated for the modern art prize.

The artist, who is the fourth woman to win the award, said she was “very honoured” as she collected her prize from fashion designer Miuccia Prada.

Philipsz’s work centres around recordings of her voice singing folk songs over public address systems.

‘Quite exceptional’

She recorded three versions of Lowlands Away – a song about of a man drowned at sea who returns to tell his lover of his death – for her installation.

It was first performed beneath three bridges over the River Clyde in her native Glasgow, but for the past two months has been playing in an empty room at Tate Britain.

The chairman of the judges, Penelope Curtis, praised Philipsz’s work, saying: “Susan’s presentation, both in Glasgow and in the way it transferred to the Tate, was quite extraordinary.

“The way she’s managed to make you look at things differently by hearing things differently is really quite exceptional.”

Philpsz, who now lives and works in Berlin, told the BBC winning the award had “not really sunk in yet”.

“It’s fantastic – I’m extremely happy to have won it, but it’s been a wonderful experience to be nominated and these past few months have been great,” she said.

“It’s given me a lot of exposure here and I’ve not shown much in the UK.”

Elyse Fenton
1 December 2010 Last updated at 17:49 ET

An American writer has won a £30,000 literary award for her collection of 21st Century poetry.

Elyse Fenton has been awarded the University of Wales Dylan Thomas Prize, set up to honour the Welsh poet and encourage writing among the young.

Ms Fenton’s collection Clamor is the first book of poetry to have won.

Stefan Mohamed, 22, from Powys, won the Prize’s debut £5,000 Sony Reader Award category for unpublished writers with his novel Bitter Sixteen.

The winner was announced at an awards dinner in Dylan Thomas’s home city of Swansea, hosted by Welsh comedian and broadcaster Chris Corcoran.

Clamor was born out of Ms Fenton’s US medic husband being deployed to Iraq and the fragments of instant messaging conversations they shared over the internet.

Judge Peter Florence, founder of the Hay Literary Festival, called the winning work “spectacular”.

“It’s a great winner. It’s an astonishing, fully accomplished book of huge ambition and spectacular delivery. For this prize of all prizes it’s great to have a poet.”

Gwyneth Lewis, poet and member of the judging panel, said the poetry collection had links with Dylan Thomas’s work.

‘High order'”The book’s vision of the relationship between love and war is more than worthy to be considered in the tradition of Dylan Thomas’s work.

“This is poetry of a very high order.”

The Dylan Thomas Prize is the latest in a number of accolades for Clamor, which won the 2009 Cleveland State University Poetry Center First Book Prize and the 2008 Pablo Neruda Award from Nimrod International Literary Journal.

Dylan Thomas
Dylan Thomas is the inspiration for the award

Ms Fenton, from Philadephia, was one of six finalists and beat writers from around the world to win the Prize.

British poet Caroline Bird, Nadifa Mohamed from Somalia, Canadian Eleanor Catton, Indian-born Karan Mahajan and Scot Emily Mackie were all on the shortlist.

Ms Fenton and the other finalists have been in Wales for the past week holding creative writing workshops for students and pupils.

The £30,000 University of Wales Dylan Thomas Prize is awarded to the best eligible published or produced literary work in the English language, written by an author under 30.

Ms Fenton is the third winner of the award following Nam Le with The Boat in 2008 and Rachel Trezise with Fresh Apples in 2006.

The Dylan Thomas Prize used to be awarded every two years with £60,000 prize money but as of this year it is now an annual event with £30,000 winnings.

The new category for unpublished British novel writers under the age of 30 was won by Stefan Mohamed, from Knighton, whose novel involves an eccentric Welsh teenager gifted with superpowers.

His novel will now be published in an electronic book format as a result of winning the prize.
