Lakers forward Metta World Peace connects with his left elbow to the side of the head of Thunder guard James Harden while celebrating a dunk late in the second quarter Sunday afternoon at Staples Center. World Peace was ejected for a flagrant-two foul.

April 23, 2012, 8:30 a.m.

Within a five-second span, Metta World Peace threw everything away.

His vicious elbow didn’t just damage Oklahoma City forward James Harden. It damaged World Peace’s reputation. His ensuing ejection didn’t just hang the Lakers out to dry as they somehow managed to escape with a 114-106 double-overtime victory Sunday over the Oklahoma City Thunder. It left them wondering if they can win without him, since World Peace probably will draw a lengthy suspension. And his apology afterward that it was an “unintentional elbow” isn’t just laughable because the Lakers’ public relations staff refused to allow him to take follow-up questions. It’s head-scratching because the replays show World Peace’s blow was hardly an accident.

There’s no reason World Peace would cock his arm and then rear back with such force unless he was planning to hit somebody. And because of the severity of that incident, World Peace deserves a suspension that lasts as long as Harden remains sidelined as he tries to recover from a concussion.

Let’s make one thing clear: World Peace is in most cases a good person and doesn’t fit the image he once in large part because of his involvement in one of the darkest moments in NBA history. In 2004 as an Indiana Pacer, Artest went into the Pistons’ crowd after beer had been thrown at him and punched a fan. The incident sparked an 86-game suspension, the longest penalty for a physical altercation in NBA history, and he received a year’s probation for pleading no contest to assault charges.

Since then, World Peace earned the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship award last year for his efforts raising money for mental health charities, including raffling off his 2010 NBA championship ring. He famously thanked his psychologist for helping him control his emotions following Game 7 of the 2010 NBA Finals. And covering him for the past 2 1/2 seasons, World Peace (and Ron Artest) has proved to be a genuinely nice human being who makes people laugh with his goofy antics along the way.

But that doesn’t matter.

When the NBA looks at the replay, they’re not going to care about intent. For better or worse, they’re not going to care about his reputation, either. They’re going to care about what World Peace did. And it was inexcusable.

In a moment when emotions completely overwhelmed him regarding his third dunk, World Peace cocked his arm and then reared back to deliver the vicious elbow. Say what you will about World Peace being caught up in the heat of the moment, not realizing his own strength or even realizing Harden was within striking distance. But logic suggests otherwise. Because of that, World Peace will have to pay a heavy price.

The most different people possible face off in the “Dancing With the Stars” finale tonight, as “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” brother Rob Kardashian tries to beat frontrunner J.R. Martinez, an Iraq war veteran who sustained burns over much of his body in service to his country.

Just for fun, let’s pretend this isn’t only a dance contest, but also a look at who we as a country honor and value in our society. It’s not a huge leap, since the audience vote makes this, above all else, a popularity contest.

Makes the show a little more interesting, doesn’t it?

On one hand, there’s a man who made a dramatic sacrifice and now inspires others to carry on in the face of unimaginable adversity. On the other, there’s a guy who became semi-famous after his older sister made a sex tape.

Add to the mix once-and-current talk show host Ricki Lake, who has competed closely with J.R. Martinez, also an “All My Children” star, to be the frontrunner in the 13th run of the show.

But Kardashian has slowly emerged as a serious contender recently. And with a perfect-score performance in Monday night’s final competition episode of the season, Kardashian and Martinez now appear to be in a close battle for the mirror ball trophy.

Dancing the freestyle to “Minnie the Moocher” with partner Cheryl Burke, Kardashian earned a 30 from the judges for his performance, which included lifting Burke above his head and twirling her around.

“You’ve just given your all,” judge Len Goodman told Kardashian. “Your family should be proud.”

Lake and partner Derek Hough earned a pair of respectable 27s from the judges, while Martinez, dancing with an injured ankle, earned a 24 for his first dance, and rebounded with partner Karina Smirnoff to end the night with another perfect score.

Martinez and Smirnoff’s spirited freestyle to “Whine Up” earned them their third 30 of the season, more than any other dance duo.

“Two things were revealed: Karina’s body and your talent,” Goodman said of the dance.

Of course, it’s only a dance contest.

But it’s not.

Check out video of Kardashian and Martinez’s perfect-score performances, and make the call: Will the war veteran or the reality show vet become the champ in tonight’s “DWTS” finale? Or does Ricki Lake, who’ll launch her new talk show next season, still have a chance?

It’s not the coolest name change in sports history, World B. Free has him beat
there, and it’s not exactly a novel idea when Chad Ochocinco beats you to the
punch a few years before, but Ron Artest’s(notes) pending name
change
to — get ready — “Metta World Peace” is a real thing. An all-too
real thing.

Apparently, Lakers radio reporter John Ireland broke the news on his
show earlier Thursday, and TMZ
picked it up from there
. AP
confirmed
the madness is true. Metta World Peace, with “Metta” apparently a word derived from the Buddhist
religion
and the Sanskrit language meaning “friendliness,” “benevolence” and
all manner of other heartwarming descriptions.

It’s the latest move from the kindler, gentler
Ron — er, Metta World Peace. In the 6 1/2 years since he charged into the
stands in Detroit to confront someone who had thrown a drink at him, Peace has
rebuilt his image through his play with three other teams, won a championship in
Los Angeles, auctioned
off his championship ring to raise money for mental health research and
care
, all while staying incident free. He tended to clang quite a few
jumpers as the Lakers disappointed and fell in the second round of the playoffs
last month, but how can you get angry at a guy with “Peace” on the back of his
jersey?

The change is up to you, Los
Angeles Superior Court
. Give Peace a chance.

(Sorry, you know I had to.)
