A grief-stricken family have pleaded for help to find a hit-and-run driver
who left their six-year-old “little soldier” to die.

Owen Wightman was killed when he was struck by a vehicle when playing with a
friend near his home in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, on Saturday – a day before
the family planned to celebrate Father’s Day.

His parents Neil and Joanne have pleaded for the driver – said to be a young
white man driving a grey or light-coloured small hatchback-type car – to turn
himself into police.

“We would like to say to whoever has done this, please come forward because
he has left two brothers behind,” Mrs Wightman told the Yorkshire Post.

Owen’s two brothers are Jack, 12, and one-year-old Thomas.

His father Neil told the paper of the devastation of finding his son in the
street.

“I got there and I went over to Owen and I was holding him and talking to
him,” he said.

“I was holding his hand and saying ‘Owen, if you can hear me, please don’t
leave us. I love you so much, you’re my little soldier’.”

local residents’ grief at owen’s death

Landscape gardener Mr Wightman, 31, said he was shocked the driver
responsible had left the scene in Fishpond Lane following the incident about
12.20pm.

But he was even more infuriated when he was told the motorist was seen
stopped further up the road, inspecting the damage to the front of his vehicle
before speeding off again.

“How can someone do that to my baby?” he said.

Describing his son Mr Wightman said: “He was a proper little lad, cheeky and
a handful. He always wanted to be out playing with his mates, he didn’t want to
be stuck indoors.”

His wife added: “He had such a lovely smile, I will always remember him
smiling. He would walk into a room and light it up.”

I was holding his hand and saying ‘Owen, if you can hear me, please don’t
leave us. I love you so much, you’re my little
soldier’.

Detective Superintendent Paul Taylor, from Leeds Police, said detectives are
a step closer to finding the culprit after debris from the offending vehicle was
recovered at the scene.

He said forensic scientists were examing the evidence to determine the make
and model of the car.

He added that police were also looking at CCTV of the suspected car and were
working on extracting the registration number from the footage.

“That being the case, I’d appeal for the driver to come forward and give his
version of events prior to us recovering the knowledge of what vehicle it was
and prior to us knocking on his door,” he said.

Detective Chief Inspector Simon Bottomley, from West Yorkshire Police, said:
“This is a tragic incident which has devastated the boy’s family.

“At this stage we believe the driver is a young white male and the vehicle is
likely to have front-end damage as a result of the collision.

“I would urge anyone with information to come forward and contact
police.”

Well-wishers have left flowers, soft toys and notes by the side of the road
where the tragedy happened.

The headteacher of Hendal Primary
School where Owen attended, Christine Platts, made tribute to the “model pupil”
and said the whole school community was deeply saddened by his death.

“Owen was a delightful boy – always
with a smile on his face and friends with everyone,” she said.

“He was a model pupil, hardworking
and enthusiastic and enjoyed taking part in all school activities. Owen will be
missed by everyone in the school.”
