Sgt. Patrick Hamburger wanted some of his mom’s trail mix.
It was a taste of home the Lincoln Southeast High School graduate and Nebraska Army Air Guardsman hoped would make his deployment to Afghanistan go faster.
But the 30-year-old father was among those killed when a helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan early Saturday, the deadliest single event in the war.
The U.S. Department of Defense had not yet released Hamburger’s name as among the 30 Americans killed when the helicopter was shot down Saturday morning, but his family confirmed Saturday night it had been notified of his death.
Hamburger had been in Afghanistan for just about a week when the chopper went down.
His stepfather, DeLayne Peck, said his stepson joined the Air Guard when he was 18, and was stationed in Grand Island with his unit. He bought a house and planned to propose to the mother of his 2-year-old daughter when he returned stateside, Peck said.
He said he’d admired Hamburger since meeting him about eight years ago.
Peck said he had seen some pictures of Hamburger’s living quarters on Facebook. His home at Forward Operating Base Shank looked like a plywood box, he said, and the family had been scrambling to send a care package of electric fans, hang-up hooks and caulking materials to spruce up the place up.
And, of course, Mom’s trail mix.
The family gathered after learning the news, Peck said, but no funeral plans had been made.
The grieving process started Saturday, he said, and won’t ever end.
“I don’t think anybody can understand it until they’ve gone through it,” Peck said, “and we’re still going through it and will be for weeks and months and years.”
