Alan Joyce

QANTAS chief executive Alan Joyce will be quizzed about what he told the Federal Government and the Opposition before his dramatic decision to ground the airline’s entire fleet on the weekend.

Mr Joyce on Friday will give evidence at a parliamentary committee scrutinising proposed legislation that will affect Qantas operations.

Greens Leader Bob Brown says Mr Joyce will be asked about any warnings he gave either of the main parties in the lead-up to Saturday’s grounding, which was sparked by ongoing industrial disputes with three unions related to job security and employment conditions.

Each side has made claims against the other, as the Opposition seeks to pin down the Government on why it didn’t stop the grounding and Labor questions whether Coalition leader Tony Abbott may have known what was coming.

“The role of Senate inquiries is to try and clear the air on matters like that,” Senator Brown told ABC radio.

The Senator said if the Opposition had any forewarning, it should have alerted Parliament to the risk. The Government says it didn’t know about the grounding until 2pm (AEDT) on Saturday, about three hours before Qantas stopped flying.

“I certainly didn’t hear about it,” he said.

Senator Brown repeated his criticism of Mr Joyce, saying his decision on Saturday “was very high handed, it was very arrogant and it’s done a lot of damage to Qantas and its brand for the future”.

The Senate committee is looking at amendments to two pieces of legislation, including the Qantas Sale Act.

The amendments would require Qantas to keep its main operations and most aircraft maintenance, flight operations and Qantas training in Australia.

The other bill relates to aircrew and involves air navigation and civil aviation legislation.

It would require an Australian airline and its subsidiaries to pay offshore flight and cabin crew the same pay and conditions as workers based onshore.

Qantas’ main subsidiary is Jetstar.

Also appearing at the inquiry will be representatives from Virgin Australia and the unions involved in the Qantas dispute – the Transport Workers Union, Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers’ Association and Australian and International Pilots Association.

The committee is due to report on November 21.

Alan Joyce was born on June 30th, 1966 according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Joyce_(executive)

June 30th, 1966

June 30th

6 + 30 +2+0+1+1 = 40 = his personal year (from June 30th, 2011 to June 29th, 2012) = Help!

40 year + 10 (October) = 50 = his personal month (from October 30th, 2011 to November 29th, 2011) = Worldwide.  When it rains, it pours.

50 month + 4 (4th of the month on Friday November 4th, 2011) = Questions.  Interrogation.  Cleverness eats its owner.  Things are not as they appear.  Talking out of both sides of his mouth.  Flip-flopping.
