A fake Wild West gun battle staged for charity in South Dakota turned bloody when an elderly woman and two men in the audience were shot with real bullets.
Carrol Knutson, 65, of Birchwood, Minn., told the Tuesday edition of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune that she was watching the summer attraction with her husband and grandson when she was shot in the leg.
“The last gun battle was just concluding, and the next thing I knew, there was blood spewing out of my leg,” she said. “It was extremely painful, worse than anything I can imagine.”
Police said they were investigating how live ammunition came to replace the blanks that should have been used Friday in the Hill City, S.D., re-enactment — one of many choreographed by volunteer cowboys from the Dakota Wild Bunch re-enactors to raise funds for the Children’s Miracle Network.
Lieutenant Marty Graves, from the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, said, “Blank ammo just goes bang. There shouldn’t be any injury. There are a bunch of theories, and we’re just going to have to work through this thing. It’s a horrible situation, and we hope to get to the bottom of it. We’re not ruling anything out.”
Doctors who examined the lead residue in Knutson’s shattered fibula believe that she was hit with a .45-caliber bullet.
Jose Pruneda, 52, of Alliance, Neb., and John Ellis, 48, of South Connellsville, Pa., also were injured.
“I got shot in the forearm, and it went through the other side of my elbow,” Ellis told the Rapid City Journal. “I had surgery around midnight [local time] Friday to remove bone and lead fragments.”
