“Hiccup Girl” Jennifer Mee, the Pinellas County girl whose uncontrollable hiccups drew worldwide fame, is now talking to select press outlets, trying to publicize an alternate explanation for her involvement in the Oct. 23 murder of a 22-year-old man.
Mee talked with Tampa Fox affiliate WTVT-Ch. 13 for an interview which aired today and NBC’s Today show for a talk to be broadcast Tuesday morning. She had to speak with them from the Pinellas County jail, where she is awaiting trial for murder, accused of luring Shannon Griffin to a vacant home, where he died after being shot, police said, during a robbery gone bad.
“I was just going with what people were telling me to do,” Mee told WTVT reporter Doug Smith. “It was a whole….I call it a love triangle.” See the St. Petersburg Times report on her recent statements here.
Mee, who appeared on national news programs in 2008 to describe her hiccuping problem, told Smith that her problem was a curse, blaming it for drawing the wrong people to her. She said one of the men arrested with her, 20-year-old Laron Cordale Raiford, shot Griffin in a jealous rage after catching the two of them together (another roommate, Lamont Antonio Newton, 22, was also arrested). Police said Mee, Raiford and Newton admitted they tried to rob Green.
Mee’s attorney John Trevena said he made his client available to select press outlets when he became concerned police released the most damaging evidence against his client close to her bond hearing. “They tried to manipulate the media and the jury pool,” said Trevena, known for taking cases with a high media profile. “They turned my own game against me.”
Mee’s arrest at the end of last year kicked off a frenzy of news outlets trying to get an interview with the girl, who gained nationwide attention two years earlier for her uncontrollable hiccuping.
Local radio personality Todd “MJ” Schnitt featured Mee’s mother, her attorney and Griffin’s ex-girlfriend; the Today show also featured Mee’s mother and Trevena. If Trevena should ask for a new bond hearing, perhaps we’ll see whether the publicity tactic worked.
