Cold Spring resident James Lovell

December 1, 2013

A commuter train derailed Sunday morning as it hurtled around a sharp curve in New York City, killing four passengers and injuring dozens of others who were tossed around like rag dolls, authorities said.

Officials said at least 63 other people were injured when all seven cars of the Metro-North Commuter Railroad train jumped the tracks as it was rounding the notorious sharp turn right before the historic Spuyten Duyvil station in the Bronx about 7:22 a.m. ET.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority identified the four passengers who were killed as Jim Lovell, 58, of Cold Spring, N.Y.; James Ferrari, 59, of Montrose, N.Y.; Donna Smith, 54, of Newburgh, N.Y.; and Ahn Kisook, 35, of Queens.

Fire officials said that as many as 11 of the injured were critical and that six were in serious condition.

Initial reports said some of the cars had gone into the Hudson River, but they narrowly avoided plunging into river. Police divers were in the frigid waters just in case, New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said.

What can travelers expect for their work commutes Monday morning? NBC’s Kristen Dahlgren reports.

“Everything has proven negative as far as those searches are concerned,” he said.

Sources told NBC News late Sunday afternoon that the train’s engineer — a “respected veteran” with 20 years of Metro-North experience who suffered minor injuries — claimed when first responders arrived that he hit the brakes as the train approached the turn.

Earl Weener, a member of the National Transportation Safety Board, wouldn’t discuss what might have caused the accident. Investigators said they had recovered the train’s data recorder, which should show how fast it was traveling and whether its brakes did, in fact, fail.

Weener said cars that were still on their sides were being uprighted to see whether there were any other deaths or injuries.

Just short of the station
Metro-North said the 5:54 a.m. diesel train from Poughkeepsie derailed just feet from the water near the station. It was due at Grand Central Station at 7:43 a.m.

The train was half full, with about 150 passengers, rail officials said. The locomotive was on the north end of the train, pushing the cars southward.

“On a workday, fully occupied, it would have been a tremendous disaster,” Fire Commissioner Salvatore Joseph Cassano told reporters at the scene.

One of the victims was found in the first car, one was found outside that car, another was found near the second and third cars, and the fourth was found outside the fourth car.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and federal safety officials say the investigation could take a week to 10 days.

“It’s a reminder to all of us that life is a precious gift,” Cuomo said at an afternoon news conference.

The condition of the tracks and the cars will be the focus of the NTSB probe, along with the speed the train was traveling, Weener said. The investigation is expected to take a week to 10 days.

Sherelle Coore, a 19-year-old college student from the Bronx who was aboard the train, told her cousin from her hospital bed that she felt a “jerking” movement and then everything started happening very quickly.

“She hit the side of her head,” Coore’s cousin, Lisa Delgado, told NBC New York. “She saw the woman in front of her go out the other window. Her glass broke, and she hung on to the side rails like a monkey while the train was flipping and the rocks were coming in.”

Sherry Nemmers, who lives near the scene, told NBC News that she heard a sound “that was a little too familiar for me.” She’d heard it before this summer, when a CSX freight train hauling trash on the same line derailed near the same area of the Bronx.

“I heard this thud — this dull thud. It sort of sent chills up me because it was a sound that I heard in July,” Nemmers said. “I was afraid that it was going to be a train, and it was.”

No one was injured in July, but questions were raised about the safety of the track’s design and its notoriously sharp turn right before the station. Cuomo noted that the two accidents happened at about the same location but said, “There has to be another factor. … It can’t just be the curve.”

Weener said the agency would examine whether Sunday’s incident could be related, but he said, “At this point in time, we have no indication it was a factor.”

At least six cops injured
At St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx, where at least 10 victims were taken, officials said critical patients had spinal cord injuries and broken bones.

Carlo Allegri / Reuters

The train derailed on a curved section of track in the Bronx on Sunday morning, coming to rest just inches from the water and causing multiple deaths and dozens of injuries.

Hospital officials said the injured there included a 14-year-old boy and his father, along with a New York police officer on her way to work who suffered broken bones. Sources said five off-duty New York officers were among the injured, all with relatively minor injuries and reported to be stable.

Metro-North Hudson line service was suspended in both directions. Amtrak service between New York and Albany reopened in midafternoon with delays.

“I think it’s fair to say that tomorrow, people who use these lines should plan on a long commute,” Cuomo said.

President Barack Obama was informed of the crash by the Department of Homeland Security, a White House official said. “His thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and families who lost a loved one and everyone affected by this incident,” the official said.

The White House said Obama would continue to stay in touch with New York officials throughout the day.

MTA officials said JFK High School in the Bronx has been established as a meeting area for passengers and their loved ones, and 718-817-7444 is the contact number for those seeking the status of relatives who may have been aboard the train.

Rod Shaigec 2010

October 19, 2013               7:08 AM MT

A CN Rail train carrying liquefied petroleum gas and crude oil has derailed and exploded about 80 kilometres west of Edmonton, prompting an evacuation in the tiny community of Gainford.

Parkland County Emergency Services says it received a call about the accident involving a westbound train around 1 a.m. MT Saturday.

The Transportation Safety Board says 13 cars — four carrying petroleum crude oil and nine carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) — left the tracks along Highway 16 and Range Road 61.

Carson Mills, spokesman for Parkland County, initially told CBC News that two of the cars containing liquefied petroleum gas were on fire.

“It’s still a volatile situation,” said Mills.

There was one “significant explosion” at the time of the derailment, followed by a “smaller one,” Mills said.

A later news release by Evansburg RCMP stated that three cars — all containing LPG — caught fire.

Parkland County Mayor Rod Skaigec said none of the involved cars are leaking at this point, but did say that one of the three cars on fire has been compromised.

“So there is concern there may be another explosion,” he said.

State of Emergency declared

Skaigec said public safety is his utmost concern..

“Certainly this could have been worse, given the recent incident in Lac Mégantic — that certainly does illustrate the threats to residents living along rail tracks. So we’re thankful it wasn’t of that magnitude.”

The area is under a state of emergency and the entire community of roughly 100 has been evacuated, in addition to all residences within about two kilometres of the derailment site.

Evacuees have been taken to the Entwistle Community Centre, about 20 kilometres from the derailment.

About 55 Evansburg RCMP officers and emergency personnel are on hand and are working with CN and the Transportation Safety Board of Canada to manage the situation. Fire crews from Parkland County and Yellowhead County, as well as a HAZMAT crew from Edmonton, are also on scene.

No injuries are reported and all CN employees have been accounted for.

Highway 16 traffic has been rerouted north along Secondary Highway 765, westbound along Secondary Highway 633 and returning southbound on Secondary Highway 757.

Mills said people have been told they’ll have to stay away from homes in the evacuation zone for at least 24 hours. It is unknown when the highway will re-open.

October 15, 2013

Eleanor Catton was awarded the Man Booker Prize on Tuesday for “The Luminaries,” an immersive tale set in 19th-century New Zealand that explores identity, greed and human frailty.

At 28, Ms. Catton is the youngest winner of the Booker. She was born in Canada and raised in Christchurch, New Zealand.

The Booker is Britain’s most prestigious literary prize, awarded annually to a novelist from Britain, Ireland or a Commonwealth country. The winner receives £50,000, or about $80,000.

Looking stunned after being named the winner, Ms. Catton said that her lengthy, complex novel was “a publisher’s nightmare.”

She then thanked her publishers for striking the “elegant balance between making art and making money.”

The book was released by Granta in Britain and Little, Brown and Company in the United States. At 848 pages, it is the longest book to win the Booker Prize.

The other nominees were “We Need New Names,” by NoViolet Bulawayo, a debut novel about a 10-year-old girl who journeys from Zimbabwe to the United States; “Harvest,” by Jim Crace, a dark, vividly drawn novel about the inhabitants of a small village; “A Tale for the Time Being,” by Ruth Ozeki, about a discovered diary that links people in distant cities; “The Lowland,” by Jhumpa Lahiri, about brothers living in post-colonial India; and “The Testament of Mary,” by Colm Toibin, a slim, 81-page portrait of Mary, the mother of Jesus.

This year’s ceremony, broadcast live from Guildhall in London, was especially momentous because it was the last year before the award is opened to entries from the United States and beyond.

In September, the Booker Prize Foundation announced that in 2014 the prize would be open to all novels written in English and published in Britain, no matter the nationality of the author.

That decision prompted hand-wringing from many in the literary world in Britain, who worried that the reconceived Booker would be limited in its potential to discover and anoint new and unknown authors.

Jonathan Taylor, chairman of the foundation, wrote at the time: “Paradoxically it has not been allowed full participation to all those writing literary fiction in English. It is rather as if the Chinese were excluded from the Olympic Games.”

The winner is selected by the judging panel on the day of the ceremony.

Ms. Catton’s first novel, “The Rehearsal,” was widely praised and nominated for awards including the Orange Prize and the Dylan Thomas Prize. She studied at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and was 25 when she began writing “The Luminaries.”

Despite her age, “Maturity is evident in every sentence, in the rhythms and balances,” said Robert Macfarlane, chairman of the judges. “It is a novel of astonishing control.”

Writing in The Guardian, Kirsty Gunn called “The Luminaries” a “consummate literary page-turner.” “Catton has created her own world in ‘The Luminaries’ — an upside-down, Southern Hemisphere kind of a place with its own astrological calendar that casts its own kind of influence, its own light.”

The Booker bestows an author with an instant boost in sales and recognition.

Some of Britain’s most revered authors, including Peter Carey, Ian McEwan and Julian Barnes, have won the prize.

Last year, the prize was given to Hilary Mantel for “Bring Up the Bodies,” her second Booker victory. She previously won in 2009, for “Wolf Hall,” the first book in her planned trilogy about Thomas Cromwell.

The bodies of a 16-year-old boy and his 52-year-old father were found at a River Ridge, Louisiana, home on Friday.

The boy, Matthew Tarto, had been dead for several days before his father Mark Tarto died. Autopsy results revealed that both died from gunshot wounds to the head.

Investigators at Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office suspect Mark Tarto murdered his son, then committed suicide several days later.

‘This has all the earmarks of an apparent murder-suicide, and the autopsy supports that finding,’ Colonel John Fortunato, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office, told The Times-Picayune.

Authorities discovered the bodies after Mark Tarto’s ex-wife Lisa Tarto became concerned that she hadn’t heard from her child.

The John Curtis Christian School where Matthew was a sophomore was also alerted after teachers noticed he had been absent since May 14.

Matthew Tarto’s football coach J.T. Curtis said it was unusual for Matthew to be away from school.

‘He was a good student who was extremely conscientious,’ he said. ‘That’s what was so unusual, for him to be out of school. He just doesn’t miss.’

Curtis said school officials called the Tarto home five times in the 10-day period between Matthew Tarto’s May 14th absence and the discovery of the bodies on May 24.

According to Curtis, the school was informed by Mark Tarto that his son was suffering a lung infection.

‘We checked again later in the week and he was still sick,’ Curtis said. ‘We checked in the first part of the next week and we were told he was going to get a chest X-ray.’

Matthew Tarto died from a gunshot wound to the back of his head.

Coroner Gerry Cvitanovich said his body was found in bed, and that it’s likely he was shot while sleeping.

Mark Tarto’s wounds are consistent with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Fortunato.

Deputies found his body in the living room beside a semi-automatic pistol.

Curtis told The Picayune-Tribune that the news Matthew had been killed by his father was hard to believe.

‘When I tell you those two were as close as you could be, I could not be any more shocked,’ he said.

Court documents reveal, however, that Mark Tarto was the subject of allegations of abuse.

According to The Advocate, when Lisa Tarto filed for divorce from Mark Tarto in the 24th Judicial District Court in 2008, she told the court he accused her repeatedly of infidelity, interrogated her friends about it and kept her up at night arguing with her.

He threatened her and belittled her in front of their son, she said.

Lisa Tarto cancelled the divorce proceedings to reconcile with her husband, only for Mark Tarto to file for divorce in 2010, asking for custody and alimony, and claiming he was ‘free from fault’ in the collapse of their marriage.

But Lisa Tarto alleged ‘habitual cruel treatment’ and ‘extreme mental abuse’ court records show.

Lisa Tarto told the court that Mark Tarto had cursed her, threatened to ruin her life and cut up her clothing.

She said Mark Tarto exhibited ‘unstable mental behavior’.

She alleged that he had ‘brain-washed’ their son and turned him against her, making Matthew believe she had been unfaithful to his father.

The court granted the divorce in October 2011 and the couple finalized a custody settlement in January.

Curtis said students and friends are preparing for Matthew Tarto’s funeral, scheduled for today in New Orleans.

‘That will stir up a lot of emotion,’ he told the local paper.

The John Curtis Christian School website says the school made counselors available to students and teachers struggling to deal with their grief.

‘The teachers, especially those who taught him and had him in the past, struggled with it,’ Curtis said. ‘It was very emotional.’

Matthew Tarto was a backup offensive lineman on the school’s 2012 Class 2A state championship football team.

‘He was the kind of son any mother would hope for,’ Curtis told WWLTV.

The school’s Twitter feed is full of tweets about Matthew Tarto.

‘Saw a guy in a Hoover High shirt. All I could think about was Joe McKnight and John Curtis owning the Bucs in 2006’ wrote @garlandgillen.

Matthew Tarto’s teammates, cheerleaders and their parents gathered on Saturday for the school’s annual spring scrimmage, some wearing Matthew Tarto’s No. 56 on their cheeks.

Tuesday was the last day of class for the school year, but Curtis said the school had emailed parents and asked them to notify the school if any students were displaying signs of difficulties or anxieties.

‘We’re going through a healing process,’ he said.

An online obituary has been set up for Matthew where friends and acquaintances can share memories of his life.

A man shot and killed his adult daughter in a Central California home with her three young children inside, also shooting and wounding another daughter before apparently turning the gun on himself, authorities said.

Jennifer Kimble, 37, was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds by deputies responding to a call from her 8-year-old daughter, the Tulare County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement. Kimble’s two sons, ages 13 and 11, were also in the house, but all three kids were unharmed.

Deputies also found Kimble’s father Anthony Alvarez, 63, dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, sheriff’s officials said.

Another daughter, Valerie Alvarez, 33, had at least one gunshot wound and was flown to a Fresno hospital in critical condition. She was stabilized and having surgery, sheriff’s spokeswoman Sgt. Chris Douglass said.

The investigation was continuing and autopsies were planned later in the week.

Douglass said investigators did not doubt that Anthony Alvarez had shot his daughters and turned the gun on himself.

“It’s a very cut-and-dried case,” she said.

No information was released on a possible motive.

The children were reunited with their father, who was at work during the shootings, authorities said.

The shootings occurred on a residential street of small stucco homes in Orosi, a town of about 9,000 people in California’s Central Valley about 20 miles southeast of Fresno.

Kimble worked in the cafeteria of an elementary school one street over from the house and was a dedicated, caring employee, according to her supervisor there.

“I’m just as surprised as anyone else right now,” Brenda Lightfoot-Handy, director of food services at Palm Elementary, told the Fresno Bee. “I’m just trying to process this.

Everything's new: Larry Shaffer loves his new life but was looking forward to having some 'proper' food upon arriving back in North Carolina

13:11 EST            18 May 2013

An Army wife who lost more than 150 pounds in weight while her husband was away in Afghanistan gave him a huge surprise upon his return.

Misty Shaffer, who once weighed more than 300 pounds, hadn’t seen husband for over a year.

She managed to keep her slimming a secret surprise from her husband, Larry, until he arrived back at his hometown airport in Wilmington, North Carolina.

‘I just kept pictures off Facebook, off the internet,’ Misty said. ‘When I did send him pictures, they were from the shoulder up,’ she told WSFA.

The weight was just one of a host of surprises Misty had waiting for him.

Their three year old daughter, Nevhah, had grown in the year he had been gone and perhaps even more significantly Misty had bought the family a new house.

‘He’s been wanting to buy a house now forever, and I went and did it while he was gone,’ she said.

The first glimpse Larry Shaffer had of his slimmer spouse was as he turned the corner and walked out of baggage claim at Wilmington, North Carolina airport.

At first, it appeared Shaffer didn’t appear to recognise his new-look wife.

A group of family and friends held signs and yelled ‘surprise!’

The couple hugged each other tightly as they saw each other for the first time in 12 months.

‘Wow,’ Shaffer said after seeing his wife. ‘This is icing on the cake because I’ve been happy with the way she’s looked since day one but it’s something she wanted to do and she reached her goal,’ he said.

He was also surprised to see how much his little girl had grown in the year he had been gone. He hopes to be at home for a while before starting another tour of duty.

‘Everything’s new,’ Shaffer said. ‘I pretty much have a new wife. My daughter’s three times the size she was and we have our own home now.’
