Prince William and Kate Middleton will marry on Friday 29 April at Westminster Abbey, Clarence House has announced.

Prime Minister David Cameron said it would be “a happy and momentous occasion”. It will be marked by a public holiday across the UK.

The Royal Family and the Middletons will pay for the wedding itself, but the taxpayer will meet the cost of extra security and transport.

The couple, both 28, got engaged while on holiday in Kenya in October.

Westminster Abbey has hosted the weddings of the Queen and Queen Mother and was the venue for Princess Diana’s funeral in 1997.

The prince’s private secretary, Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, said the couple chose the Abbey for its “staggering beauty”, 1,000-year royal history and its feeling of intimacy despite its size.

He said William and Kate were “calling the shots” on the wedding plans, but had a “rather large supporting cast” to help them.

“We know that the world will be watching on April 29, and the couple are very, very keen indeed that the spectacle should be a classic example of what Britain does best,” Mr Lowther-Pinkerton said.

“Prince William and Catherine have made it very clear that they wish everybody to be able to enjoy the day with them.

“Consequently, the day will be a proper celebration for the nation and the realms.

“Having said that, the couple are very mindful of the current situation, and for example, Prince William has already expressed a clear wish that any involvement by the armed forces should rely in great part on those servicemen and women already committed to public and ceremonial duties.”

‘National celebration’

The Dean of Westminster, the Very Reverend Dr John Hall, welcomed the couple’s choice of venue.

“We are very pleased they have chosen Westminster Abbey for their marriage and look forward to the detailed planning for what will be a great and happy occasion for the couple themselves, for their families and friends, for the country and Commonwealth and for well-wishers across the globe,” he said.

Dean of Westminster: “Abbey is a very special place”

The BBC’s Daniela Relph said William and Kate wanted to marry on a Friday in spring and 29 April was chosen because it fell after Easter and Lent and before a busy political programme in May and June.

The extra holiday will fall in the same week as Easter Monday, giving millions of workers a three-day week.

Mr Cameron said: “We want to mark the day as one of national celebration, a public holiday will ensure the most people possible will have a chance to celebrate on the day.”

The Scottish government followed suit in declaring a public holiday.

The wedding date falls six days before the Holyrood elections on 5 May. As 28 working days are needed between dissolving parliament and polling day, parliament could be dissolved a day earlier than expected.

Elections to the Welsh and Northern Ireland Assemblies, some English council polls and the UK-wide referendum on voting reform are due to take place the same day.

But Mr Cameron dismissed concerns that the public holiday would come too close to polling day.

‘A party’

“The timing of the wedding is entirely a matter for the Royal Family. People are perfectly capable of seeing the difference… a day of celebration and a referendum and local election campaign,” he said.

Earlier, there was prolonged applause at the Church of England’s general synod when the Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams expressed “delight” at the forthcoming marriage on behalf of those present.

Addressing the Queen, he said: “Prince William and Miss Middleton will be very much in our thoughts and prayers in the months to come and we know that you and the rest of the family will be supporting them with prayer and wisdom and love as we shall all be trying to do.”

Anti-monarchy group Republic said creating a bank holiday for something “most people are not interested in” was “absurd” and that an extra day off should only be for something everyone could relate to.

Prince William and Kate Middleton speak to the press following the announcement of their wedding.

Prince William proposed to Kate with his mother Diana’s diamond and sapphire engagement ring.

Asked why he had done so, he said: “It is very special to me and Kate is very special to me now as well. It is only right the two are put together.”

Mr Lowther-Pinkerton said the couple were “completely over the moon” about their engagement.

“I’ve never seen two happier people,” he added.

The Press Association reported that a concert in Hyde Park had been proposed to coincide with William and Kate’s wedding.

It said a senior royal aide had refused to confirm the suggestion but had added: “Their view on it would be, ‘Let’s have a party.'”

More details of the royal wedding have been released by Clarence House.

Clarence House also revealed the exact timings of the big day, and the route of the carriage procession.

Meanwhile, Prince Harry has joined Miss Middleton for a wedding rehearsal at Westminster Abbey, where she will marry Prince William on 29 April.

Harry is best man to his brother, the second in line to the throne, and plays an important role in the ceremony.

Kate’s maid of honour – her sister Pippa Middleton – and her young bridesmaids and pageboys also attended the run-through.

William, an RAF search and rescue helicopter pilot, did not attend as he was on duty.

Kate Middleton will be staying in the hotel’s Royal suite

Earlier, Clarence House said William and Harry would arrive at Westminster Abbey in a state limousine at 1015 BST – leaving almost 40 minutes before the ceremony begins.

It also gave details of the planned flypasts after the wedding.

Three aircraft from the RAF’s Battle of Britain Memorial Flight – a Lancaster, a Spitfire and a Hurricane – will be followed by two Typhoons and two Tornado GR4s in box formation.

  • 1015 – The groom and Prince Harry arrive at Westminster Abbey
  • 1051 – The bride, and her father, leave the Goring Hotel for the abbey

Clarence House also said the route of the carriage procession would pass along The Mall, Horse Guards Road, Horse Guards Parade, through Horse Guards Arch, Whitehall, along the south side of Parliament Square and into Broad Sanctuary.

The wedding service will be relayed to the gathered crowds by speakers along the procession route, with tens of thousands expected to hear the couple exchange their vows.

There will also be screens at Hyde Park and Trafalgar Square.

A special website has been set up for people wanting to know where to watch the service in central London.

Royal wedding: Prince William to marry Kate Middleton

Prince William is to marry long-term girlfriend Kate Middleton next year, Clarence House has announced.

William, second in line to the throne, will marry in London next spring or summer and live in north Wales, where he is serving with the RAF.

“We are both very, very happy,” the prince said. He had proposed on holiday in Kenya in October, giving his fiancee his mother’s engagement ring.

Miss Middleton said joining the Royal Family was a “daunting prospect”.

“Hopefully I’ll take it in my stride,” she added.

The couple, both 28, met at St Andrews University, Fife.

William said using Diana’s ring was “my way of making sure my mother didn’t miss out on today and the excitement”.

Prince Charles said he was “thrilled, obviously” about the engagement, joking: “They’ve been practising long enough.”

Kate Middleton’s parents Michael and Carole said they were “absolutely delighted” and “thrilled” by the news.

Her father said: “We have got to know William really well, we all think he is wonderful and we are extremely fond of him.

“They make a lovely couple, are great fun to be with and we’ve had a lot of laughs together. We wish them every happiness for the future.”

The royal engagement was announced in a brief statement released by Clarence House.

It said: “The Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince William to Miss Catherine Middleton.

“The wedding will take place in the spring or summer of 2011, in London. Further details about the wedding day will be announced in due course.

Analysis

Peter Hunt Royal Correspondent

We have become slightly cynical, perhaps, slightly sceptical. We all lived through the fairytale royal weddings of the 1980s and we know where they ended up.

But I know many people who are actively thinking about where they will place their picnic tables and chair once they have a date. These are occasions that people do delight in, in this country.

I don’t think William of all people wants to do a rerun of his parents’ ill-fated marriage and for that reason I think the wedding is unlikely to be in St Paul’s Cathedral.

The Guards Chapel, which was the setting for the 10th anniversary memorial service for his late mother, I suspect, may be too small, given that we are talking about the marriage of a future king.

That’s why inevitably, I suspect, the wedding will be at Westminster Abbey where, of course, his grandmother the Queen married in 1947.

“Prince William has informed the Queen and other close members of his family.

“Prince William has also sought the permission of Miss Middleton’s father.”

The Queen said she was “absolutely delighted” for both Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Prime Minister David Cameron said the engagement marked “a great day for our country” and wished the couple a long and happy life together.

He said he had received the news in a call from Buckingham Palace during a cabinet meeting, and it was greeted with “a great cheer” and “banging of the table” from fellow ministers.

He had slept overnight on the Mall ahead of Diana and Charles’ wedding, he added.

Leader of the Labour party Ed Miliband said “the whole country will be wishing them every happiness”.

Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond said William and Kate’s romance was “a match made in St Andrews” and everyone in Scotland would join him in wishing them well.

Welsh First Minister Carwyn Jones offered his congratulations, saying: “I’m very pleased to hear that they plan to begin their married life in north Wales.”

The Countess of Wessex said the royal family was “absolutely thrilled and we all wish them all the luck and love in the world”.

James Whittaker, who has reported on the Royal Family since the 1960s, said life as a princess will be “very very demanding”.

Dickie Arbiter, the Queen’s former press secretary, told the BBC: “She’ll become a service wife.

David Cameron said Prince William was ”extremely excited”

“He’ll have to do his statutory royal duty, his royal bit, but he will be very much a working helicopter pilot with RAF search and rescue for the next three years, and Kate will have to get used to living in North Wales, although I think she’s pretty much used to it at the moment.”

Meanwhile royal commentator Margaret Holder said she thought the marriage would give Prince William the warm, cosy, family life he wanted.

“What he’s finding with the Middleton family is what he didn’t have as a child and I think that’s very good for him.

“I think this is going to be a very, very good and successful marriage. And I think this will take the monarchy through well into the 21st Century. I think Kate is very modern, she’s very relevant.”

Prince William and Kate Middleton both started out on the same history of art course at St Andrews in 2001, although William later switched to geography. For several years, they shared accommodation with friends.

Miss Middleton, who is six months older than William, was credited with persuading the prince to stay on as he struggled to adjust to university life during his first year.

Prince Charles told reporters he was ”thrilled” about news of the royal wedding

They graduated in the same ceremony from St Andrews in 2005 and their families joined them for a celebratory lunch.

The couple’s relationship was exposed in 2005 when they were photographed together on the Swiss ski slopes of Klosters.

They split briefly in 2007, but more recently Miss Middleton – who has no royal or aristocratic family connections – has been to several official events, heightening speculation of an engagement.

Miss Middleton is the eldest child of businessman Michael Middleton and former air hostess Carol.

She was raised in a modern five-bedroom detached house in the Berkshire village of Bucklebury and her family, who are self-made millionaires, run a mail order toy and party goods company.

The couple will marry in the year which would have marked the 30th anniversary of Prince William’s parents’ wedding.

The first interview with the couple will be aired on BBC News at 1900GMT. William and Kate – A Royal Engagement will be broadcast on BBC Two on Tuesday night at 1930 GMT.

Prince William Arthur Philip Louis of Wales, KG, FRS (born 21 June 1982), is the elder son of Charles, Prince of Wales, and Diana, Princess of Wales, and grandson of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. He is second in the line of succession, behind his father, to the thrones of 16 independent states, although he is resident in, and most directly involved with, the United Kingdom, the oldest of these realms.

Following his education at numerous schools around the United Kingdom, obtaining a degree from the University of St Andrews, and spending parts of a gap year in Chile, Belize, and countries in Africa, William enrolled in the military. He was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Blues and Royals regiment of the Household Cavalry – serving with his brother Prince Harry and,[2] two years later, earned his wings by completing pilot training at Royal Air Force College Cranwell.[3] In 2009, the Prince transferred to the Royal Air Force, was promoted to flight lieutenant and underwent helicopter flying training with the aim of becoming a full time pilot with the Search and Rescue Force.[4][5] As of Autumn 2010, he has completed his generic and special to type helicopter training and is now at RAF Valley on No. 22 Squadron performing co-pilot duties on the Sea King search and rescue helicopter. On 16 November 2010, Clarence House, his home near Buckingham Palace, announced that in 2011 he would marry long-time girlfriend Kate Middleton.

Catherine Elizabeth “Kate” Middleton (born 9 January 1982) is the fiancée of Prince William of Wales. Since their relationship began, Middleton has received widespread media attention and there has been constant speculation that they would eventually marry. On 16 November 2010, the office of the Prince of Wales, at Clarence House, announced to the media that Middleton and Prince William intend to marry in 2011.

Middleton grew up in Berkshire and after attending Marlborough College, went to the University of St Andrews. She met Prince William, also studying there, in 2001. They soon started a relationship, media attention quickly followed, and in 2005 her lawyer complained of harassment. In April 2007, the press reported that William and Middleton had split up. They continued to be friends, and later in 2007 they reunited. Since then, Middleton has attended many high-profile royal events. She has been admired for her fashion sense and has been placed on numerous “best dressed” lists.

Prince William and Kate Middleton Are Practically Family | Kate Middleton, Prince William

Thursday April 22, 2010 08:30 AM EDT

They may not be engaged yet – but Prince William and longtime girlfriend Kate Middleton already are practically family. And while nobody knows for sure whether a proposal will happen in June, as some online reports have suggested, someone close to William says the engagement is “a given. It’s just a question of when.”

During a recent lunch at a ski resort in the French Alps, an observer witnessed William and Middleton sharing a very chummy lunch with her parents. Says the onlooker: “William was clearly very close to Kate’s father, and every time he spoke to him, William replied, ‘Yes, Dad.’ ”

So, when will an engagement happen?

Oddsmakers are wagering 1 to 2 that Prince William will pop the question soon. “We’ve seen quite a bit of money, suggesting an engagement is imminent,” says Nick Weinberg, a spokesman for the betting house Ladbrokes.
