British-born author Christopher Hitchens on Wednesday cut short a book tour to undergo chemotherapy, which several media outlets reported was because the heavy smoker has been diagnosed with cancer.”I have been advised by my physician that I must undergo a course of chemotherapy on my esophagus. This advice seems persuasive to me. I regret having had to cancel so many engagements at such short notice,” Hitchens, 61, said in a statement released through his publishers Twelve.

A representative for the publisher offered no details beyond the statement.

Hitchens, known to be a heavy smoker, launched a book tour last month to promote his memoir “Hitch 22” which tackles subjects ranging from the Middle East and Zimbabwe to his friendships with prominent writers including Salman Rushdie and Martin Amis.

As a journalist, critic and war correspondent, Hitchens has carved out a reputation for barbed repartee, scathing critiques of public figures and a fierce intelligence.

In his 2008 book “God Is Not Great”, Hitchens put himself on a collision course with major religions with his trenchant atheist views.

Hitchens was born in Britain, lives in Washington D.C., and retained his British citizenship when he also became an American citizen in 2007.

Aamir Khan joins Twitter
Agencies
Wednesday, June 30, 2010

Bollywood’s illustrious fraternity on Twitter just grew bigger. After Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh and Salman Khan, it is now Aamir Khan’s turn to join the micro-blogging site.

It is a measure of his immense popularity that the 3 Idiots star, whose first tweet from his handle aamir_khan reads ‘Testing. Aamir.’, has already acquired 29,166 followers in the space of nine hours.

Filmmaker Karan Johar was one of the first to welcome the actor to the community and tweeted “@aamir_khan on twitterverse people!!!”. Amitabh Bachchan, who reportedly convinced Aamir to take the plunge, was also quick to extend greetings. “You have been tried and tested! Welcome, and thank you for agreeing to twitter! Now handle it brother! There will be MADNESS!!” read Big B’s tweet.

Aamir has in fact joined the Twitter community a day earlier than expected. “Aamir will be on Twitter from July 1. He was not on Twitter till now because he thought he won’t be able to give enough time to it. But since Mr.Bachchan insisted on him joining it, he gave it another thought and has decided to join it. He cannot say no to Mr.Bachchan,” a source close to the actor was quoted as saying.

Aamir met Amitabh and his actress-politician wife Jaya over a casual dinner in London some time back and Amitabh started persuading him to join the site. He even taught him how to send Tweets through his phone.

Having made a late entry, it remains to be seen if and when Aamir overtakes Twitter veterans like Amitabh and Shah Rukh who have 207,690 and 484,464 followers respectively.

Legendary hip-hop artist and graffiti artist Rammellzee has passed away, according to various Twitter accounts. An official confirmation is still pending and a cause of death is not yet known.

Born in 1960, Rammellzee was considered a pioneer in the hip hop community and his unique vocal style served as influence for a number of today’s artists. His resume was highlighted by “Beat Bop”, his legendary 1983 single with K-Rob, collaborations with Buckethead, and appearances in influential hip hop films Wild Style and Style Wars.

In addition to his work in the music community, Rammellzee was also an acclaimed graphic artist whose works were based on the theory of Gothic Futurism. According to Wikipedia, the theory “describes the battle between letters and their symbolic warfare against any standardizations enforced by the rules of the alphabet.”

I am by no means an authority on Rammellzee, so please read both The Daily Swarm and Passion of the Weiss for more insight on his life and impact. Also, below you can find a few videos illustrating the artist’s many talents.

Patel guilty over deaths
07:54, Wednesday June 30, 2010
Former Bundaberg surgeon Jayant Patel has spent his first night in jail after being convicted of killing three patients and permanently injuring a fourth.
The 60-year-old had pleaded not guilty to the manslaughter of Mervyn Morris, Gerry Kemps and James Phillips, and the grievous bodily harm of Ian Vowels.
But after 50 hours of deliberations a Brisbane Supreme Court jury found him guilty last night of all four charges relating to his stint as director of surgery at Bundaberg hospital from 2003 to 2005.
The victims’ families and former patients say the verdicts bring closure even before Patel’s sentenced tomorrow.
Mr Kemps’ wife Judy says it’s been a long five years but she finally feels free.
Former Patel patient and patient advocate Beryl Crosby says Patel’s been found guilty and it doesn’t matter what happens from here.

Genelia D’Souza and KWAN, the agency that represents her within the endorsement space have added another feather to their caps. The CNBC Awaaz Consumer Awards, the most definitive consumer preference awards, have awarded Genelia as the ‘Brand Ambassador of the Year – 2010’ and KWAN for being successful image builders and managers in their 6th edition held yesterday.

Genelia D’Souza proudly succeeds Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar etc. who have been previously awarded in 2009 and 2008 respectively as the people behind the spectacular brands that have reached out to their consumers and managed to make a mark in one of the world’s most sought-after markets. These brands have broken the barriers of language and nationality, rising up to the coveted position of India’s most preferred brands. From emerging on the scene as an adoring fan to Mr. Amitabh Bachchan in a pen commercial to evolving as the Brand Ambassador of the Year and the only woman winner to receive the award, Genelia has definitely come a long way and made her mark.

The award, that recognises both Genelia’s connect with the masses as well as the management at KWAN for successfully managing Genelia’s brand image, will be presided over by the Honourable Finance Minister of India, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee with CEOs of India’s biggest consumer companies, creative and management Heads of India’s best advertising agencies and media-buying houses in attendance.

Genelia, who currently endorses nine varied brands – Cadbury’s Perk, Fanta, Spinz, Dabur Vatika, LG Cookie, Virgin, Margo, Garnier and Fasttrack is quite excited to be the recipient of this award and says, “It is an honour that CNBC Awaaz and the Indian consumers have chosen to bestow upon me and I couldn’t be happier. Stalwarts like Shah Rukh and Akshay have been awarded this prestigious title in the past and I’m only glad that people think I’m worthy of the same. This award symbolises a bridge between the consumer and the brand and I consider it a huge responsibility. I hope I continue to do even better in the future and I’m sure I will as I have a very strong team with me that help me build, grow and sustain. My success is as much theirs as it is mine.”

Anirban Das Blah, MD, KWAN adds, “Managing celebrities is not about brokering deals but about scientific brand building. A well-managed celebrity has an impact and resonance that goes far beyond box-office results on any given Friday. KWAN is honoured to have our unique approach to celebrity brand management recognised by CNBC and are privileged to work with Genelia, India’s leading Brand Ambassador.”

The team at KWAN and their brand baby Genelia took a bow at the CNBC Awaaz Consumer Awards 2010 – the nation’s most prestigious awards for its best brands.

Tuesday 29 June 2010 14.57 BST

The second seed Venus Williams has been dumped out of Wimbledon at the quarter-final stages by the unseeded Bulgarian, Tsvetana Pironkova. Williams was defeated 6-2, 6-3 by the 22-year-old world No81.

Errors were flowing from Williams at the start of the second set – the 30-year-old twice plunging the ball into the net with easy volleys – although she did just enough to hold serve.

Williams’s capitulation in the opener marked the first time she had conceded a set at this year’s Championships, and she appeared determined not to repeat the experience as she managed an early break.

But Pironkova responded with a break-back point in the next, showing first-class agility as she chased down a drop shot before aiming a precise lob to the back of the court.

The Bulgarian got the set back on serve when Williams netted, much to the delight of a Court One crowd who braced themselves for an upset.

Unforced errors remained a feature of Williams’ game as she hit her fourth and fifth double faults early in the sixth.

A 10th break point soon followed for Pironkova and the writing was on the wall for Williams when she fired wide to fall 4-2 behind.

A lucky net cord secured a 5-2 lead in the next as the gods began to smile on Pironkova, and although Williams saved two match points in the next, the Bulgarian closed it out on her service game to take the set 6-3 and advance to the last four.

Former Victoria’s Secret model Stephanie Seymour is going through a messy divorce involving drugs, alcohol and missed court dates.

The New York Post reports Seymour, 40, was “recently hauled into a Connecticut courtroom after she missed court-ordered [drug] testing while vacationing in St. Barts with two of her kids in March.”

While Seymour’s marriage to entrepreneur Peter Brant may have seemed idyllic, dark claims about her indulgences are surfacing. Lawyer Lacey Bernier, who represents the interests of Stephanie and Peter’s three children together, “became worried about Seymour’s mixing prescription drugs with alcohol after speaking with Seymour’s nanny, Cora Driv,” the Post reports.

“All of the kids that I interviewed, they all had memories of her drunk,” Bernier says.
Seymour filed for divorce in March 2009. The Post says Seymour’s drinking and drug abuse are a “critical point of contention” in the split. Seymour’s lawyer dropped her after the former supermodel failed to show up for drug testing. They had “a very strained relationship that culminated in [its] termination,” court documents reveal.

Although Seymour was not held in contempt of court for missing the drug test, her husband’s lawyers have asked the judge to forbid her to drink, saying she “has a proclivity for combining alcohol with various prescription drugs.”

Seymour was previously married to guitarist Tommy Andrews. Her first son, Dylan Thomas Andrews, was born in 1991, after the yearlong marriage had fallen apart. She then dated acting legend Warren Beatty (33 years her senior) before becoming involved with Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose. The two had a tumultuous relationship. PEOPLE reported in 1993:

“Rose, 31, brought [legal action] Aug. 27 in Los Angeles Superior Court against Stephanie Seymour, 24, the Victoria’s Secret supermodel he had reportedly been engaged to marry. The two broke up in February, and Rose is now suing her for assault, battery and the recovery of more than $100,000 worth of jewelry.”

At the time of the PEOPLE article, Seymour had just begun seeing Brant.

Amy Locane Biography

Jun 29, 2010, 2:52 GMT

Melrose Place” original cast member Amy Locane drove while intoxicated and plowed into a victim and her passenger while they were turning into their driveway.

Locane, the actress who played Sandy in the original cast of “Melrose Place,” was charged with second-degree vehicular homicide after a Sunday night crash in Montgomery, N.J., in which the passenger in the other car was killed.

Locane confessed to police that she had been drinking wine before the crash, the New Jersey Star-Ledger reports.

Locane, 39, was driving her SUV and reportedly struck the passenger side of a Mercury Milan as the other vehicle was turning into a driveway, the Star-Ledger reports.

The deceased is reported by the Star-Ledger to be Helen Seeman, who was pronounced dead at the scene; Fred Seeman was flown to a hospital and is in critical condition.

Locane is a mother of two and married to a liquor store owner, Mark Bovenizer.

It was reported that Locane also rear-ended a car in Princeton, New Jersey shortly before the fatal crash, according to a prosecutor’s statement.

If Locane is convicted, she faces five to 10 years in prison.

Michael Tree Kirkham

Jun 28, 2010

A 30-year-old MMA fighter has died from head injuries after making his professional debut Saturday in South Carolina, according to TV station WRDW.

Michael Kirkham, from Gaston, S.C. was pronounced dead this morning at Aiken Regional Medical Center. He was struck in the head several times during the bout, was unresponsive when transported and never regained consciousness before dying from a brain hemorrhage, according to WRDW.

Kirkham had fought six times in MMA events as an amateur. He was a lightweight who stood 6-9, and was nicknamed “Tree.”

The event’s promoter, Sam King, told MMAFighting.com that, “Obviously our thoughts and prayers are with his family, other than that I have no comment.”

Fanhouse.com says Kirkham is the second fighter to die from injuries suffered in a regulated MMA fight in the U.S. The other was Sam Vasquez, in 2007, in Houston, who died after being in a coma for 42 days.

Martin David Ginsburg (June 10, 1932 – June 27, 2010) was an internationally renowned taxation law expert. He was Professor of Law at Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C. He was of counsel to the firm of Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson.

Ginsburg was born to Morris and Evelyn (Bayer) Ginsburg and grew up on Long Island. His father was a department store executive.[4] He earned an A.B. from Cornell University (1953) and a J.D. (magna cum laude) from Harvard Law School (1958).[2] He was a star on Cornell’s golf team.[4][3] He finished a year at law school, married Ruth Joan Bader (after she finished at Cornell), and was drafted (1954). He was stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.[5] He exploited his undergraduate training in chemistry, to learn to cook— his new bride’s limited culinary skills encouraged it.[6] He returned to law school and his wife entered HLS (1956). During his third year at law school, he endured two operations and radiation therapy to treat testicular cancer.[7] After law school, he joined Weil, Gotshal & Manges (1958). He was admitted to the bar in New York (1959) and District of Columbia (1980).[2]

He taught at New York University Law School (1960s),[3] and was a visiting professor Stanford Law School (1977–1978),[1], Harvard Law School (1985–1986), University of Chicago Law School (1989–1990), and at NYU (1992–1993).[8] He was a tenured professor at Columbia Law School (Beekman Professor of Law) (1979–1980), and at Georgetown (1980–).[1][9]

Ginsburg’s firm represented H. Ross Perot in a business matter, and the two men became friends (1971). After President Jimmy Carter nominated his wife to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit (1980), Ginsburg reached out to Perot and other influential friends to assure her Senate confirmation.[1] Ginsburg resolved complex tax questions that threatened General Motors‘s acquisition (1984) of Perot’s Electronic Data Systems. Perot endowed (1986) the Martin Ginsburg chair in taxation at Georgetown Law Center, but Ginsburg has yet to fill that appointment.[1][9]

Ginsburg married future Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader June 23, 1954; they are the parents of Jane Carol Ginsburg (born 1955, HLS 1980), and James Steven Ginsburg (born 1965).

Impressive as Arjen Robben and his Dutch teammates were in advancing to the World Cup quarterfinals, they seek much more.

The Netherlands reached the final eight Monday when standouts Robben and Wesley Sneijder scored in each half of a 2-1 victory over Slovakia.

“We played a difficult match. Main thing is, we are through,” Robben said. “Probably the perfect game has still to come.”

Game Notes

World Cup bracket

• Netherlands reaches the quarterfinals for the fifth time, but first since 1998.

• Netherlands will face the Brazil-Chile winner on Friday in Port Elizabeth (9:30 a.m. ET on ESPN).

• The Dutch have now won their last eight games overall and are unbeaten in 23 straight overall.

• In his first start at the tournament after recovering from a hamstring injury, Arjen Robben scored in the 18th minute, his second career World Cup goal and 12th career goal overall.

• The Netherlands won despite completing only 335 passes, its lowest total at this year’s World Cup, and only the sixth time since 1978 that it has completed fewer than 350 in a match.

• The three goals helped push the goals-per-match total of this World Cup to 2.25, edging it ahead of 1990’s 2.21, which is the lowest in World Cup history.

The Dutch might need to approach perfection in their next match, against either Brazil or Chile. For now, they can enjoy the rekindling of the crafty Dutch offense — and they can credit Robben, who made his first start of the tournament after recovering from a hamstring injury.

The Oranje, who have never won soccer’s biggest prize, went ahead in the 18th minute when Robben cut inside from the right wing and found the net with a low, precise shot from 20 yards.

“It’s fantastic,” coach Bert van Marwijk said. “After such an injury that he has the touch to score a goal like that.”

The Moses Mabhida Stadium was filled mostly with orange-clad Netherlands fans and they blasted their vuvuzelas on Robben’s first touch. After his goal, the sound became deafening.

Sneijder doubled the lead into an empty net in the 84th after a gamble by Slovak goalkeeper Jan Mucha backfired.

“We had a good first half hour. And we started well in the second half,” Van Marwijk said. “We should have scored 2-0, 3-0, maybe 4-0 there.”

Netherlands goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg preserved the win with two key saves in the 67th and the Dutch extended their team-record unbeaten streak to 23 games. Robert Vittek scored on a last-second penalty kick for Slovakia, then rushed to the net to retrieve the ball, only to hear the final whistle.

“At a crucial stage Maarten Stekelenburg saved us,” Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk said.

It was only a month ago when Robben and Sneijder were on opposite sides of the pitch in the Champions League final — Robben with Bayern Munich and Sneijder with winner Inter Milan.

On Monday, they showcased some of the brilliant passing and scoring that is a trademark of the Netherlands when it is playing well. Sneijder sent Robben sprinting upfield with a long, accurate pass and the winger did what he’s been doing all season with Bayern, scoring with shots from beyond the penalty area.

With a sharp breeze blowing in from the nearby Indian Ocean, Robben nearly doubled the lead in the 50th minute, but Mucha deflected his shot just wide of the goal. A minute later, Robben sent a dangerous cross inside the area and Mucha blocked a close-range shot from Joris Mathijsen.

In the 71st, when he was replaced by Eljero Elia, Robben exited to a standing ovation.

“He’s a total genius, and when I saw him in the starting lineup I thought he makes the Dutch team 50 percent stronger — and I was right,” Slovakia coach Vladimir Weiss said.

Sneijder sealed the victory when Dirk Kuyt drew Mucha out of his net.  Impressive as Arjen Robben and his Dutch teammates were in advancing to the World Cup quarterfinals, they seek much more.

In the four minutes after Juan’s opening goal, Brazil has already launched two dangerous counter attacks, the second producing a goal for Luis Fabiano in the 38th minute.

Brazil broke out of their own end and got the ball to Robinho on the left flank.  A ball played across, to the top of the arc, for Kaká drew defenders, allowing the midfielder to touch a pass behind the line for Luis Fabiano.  Fabiano touched the ball to the right to avoid the goalkeeper and give him an open goal.

Brazil lead 2-0, not in the 43rd minute.

Rodolfo Torre Cantu, the favourite to win from the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) in north-eastern Tamaulipas state, was killed near Ciudad Victoria airport, said party spokesman Fernando Moreno Pena.

Local television showed images of three covered bodies lying on the road next to two cars. The identity of the other victims was not clear.

It was the most high-profile killing yet in the tense run-up to Sunday’s polls that will see 12 governors chosen and local elections for mayors and lawmakers in 14 states.

Elections for mayors in Tamaulipas, across the border from Texas, have already been marred by shoot-outs between rival drug gangs.

Almost 23,000 people have died in drug-related violence since President Felipe Calderon launched a military crackdown on the country’s powerful organized crime gangs after taking office at the end of 2006.

Allen Kruse beside his boat May 6 at Orange Beach, Ala. He was found dead on the boat June 23, after apparently shooting himself in the head.
6/26/2010Allen Kruse tenderly kissed his wife goodbye just after sunrise Wednesday and headed to the docks in Gulf Shores, Ala., where his boat, The Rookie, was moored. A charter boat captain for 25 years, Kruse had signed on as a BP contractor to spot oil, deploy boom and eventually learn how to skim oil. His business had come to a screeching halt after the April 20 oil spill. About an hour later, Kruse was dead. He was 55, the father of 11- and 12-year-old boys, Cory and Ryan, and daughter Kelli, 26. About 7 a.m., after a BP training meeting, he climbed into the wheelhouse of his 46-foot charter boat and ended his worry, his frustration and his anger with a single bullet to the head. “Nothing was easy working with BP. Everything was hard, and it consumed him. He wasn’t crazy,” said his wife, Tracy, 41, sitting outside the couple’s home in Foley on Thursday. “He’d been a charter boat captain for 25 years, and all of the sudden he had people barking orders at him who didn’t know how to tie up a boat to a pier. I think he thought, ‘I’ve got to get out of this. I can’t take it.’ ”

The spill also left Kruse emotionally devastated. It robbed him of his passion for taking customers out to the Gulf to fish for red snapper and grouper, his wife said.

“Our whole lives surround this, this oil, everything is oil,” he told her a few days ago.

    Consumed by worry

From the beginning, Kruse was unhappy with the glacially slow process of working for BP.

“He couldn’t believe they were sitting there at Zeke’s Marina doing nothing,” Tracy said. “He wanted to get out there and work and help clean up the oil.”

But once the work finally began, Kruse was overwhelmed with the paperwork to get an assignment and get paid.

In particular, one invoice required 52 pages to fill out, and there were problems getting the paperwork to BP, Tracy said.

Several days ago, Kruse finally completed the invoice and sent it to BP, but he still was unsettled.

“Things changed in our marriage,” Tracy said. “Usually, I was the worrier, but now Allen worried. He worried that BP wouldn’t get the invoices. He worried about the whole situation.”

Tuesday morning, black skies loomed over The Rookie, but Kruse and his crew of three still went out to look for oil.

“They went out, but Allen called me and said, ‘This is bad. Someone’s going to get hurt,’ ” Tracy said. “So they came in at the request of the task force leader.”

With the ominous weather and rain, Kruse’s mood turned darker.

By Tuesday night, he again was focused on the 52-page invoice.

“I said, ‘Allen, honey, please let’s just give this a break,’ ” Tracy said. “He said to me, ‘I just got this fog in my head I can’t shake, and it’s driving me crazy.’ ”

Kruse took a bath. He felt better. He ate. At 9 p.m., he and his wife went to bed.

    ‘Last time I saw him’

Wednesday morning, Kruse rose first and dressed. Tracy got up for a few minutes, meeting her husband in the kitchen.

“He was just standing there, bent over the counter with his face in his hands,” she said. “He was just leaning on the counter, and I could see the wheels of worry turning in his head.”

Tracy said little, then returned to bed to catch up on sleep. Minutes later, her husband was at her bedside.

“He was just patting my head, and he said, ‘I’m about to leave,’ and then Allen said, ‘It’s just all madness, Tracy.'”

Those were the last words she’d hear him say.

“I told him everything would be all right. I said, ‘Don’t worry, Allen. It will all work out, honey.’ ”

Kruse kissed his wife, looked in on the boys, and climbed into his Ford F-250.

“That was the last time I saw him,” she said.

She had no thought that he would take his own life.

    The shot

A few minutes later, Kruse picked up Ronnie Doyle, a loyal deckhand, at the Burger King at Gulf Shores Parkway and Fort Morgan Road in Gulf Shores.

They drove to Gulf Shores Yacht and Marina and the BP staging area and went about their normal duties of fueling up The Rookie.

Then, the captains met with BP officials at a nearby building. It was hot inside, and many of the captains were angry and frustrated.

Deckhand Joe Resmondo said something happened to Kruse at the meeting. What, he didn’t know, but Kruse had a look of horror on his face.

The co-owner of the marina, Billy Parks, passed Kruse and playfully punched him in the shoulder. Using his nickname, Parks cajoled him, “Cheer up, Rookie. It’ll be OK.”

But something was very wrong. Then Kruse went missing.

“It was a normal morning, but at one point, we couldn’t find Rookie,” Resmondo said. “I asked around if anyone had seen him.”

    No one had.

Then, there was a clap, what Resmondo assumed was a backfire or firecracker.

“I didn’t give it any thought,” he said. “It was a muffled sort of crack. Then, I climbed the ladder to the wheelhouse and saw Allen on the floor, sitting in the corner. He had shot himself. I turned, screamed for help and dialed 911.”

    ‘He wanted out’

Tracy got the call from Parks. There had been an accident, Parks said.

“What kind of accident?” Tracy frantically asked. “Is it Allen? Did he fall off the boat?” Her husband was notoriously clumsy.

“You need to come to the marina,” Parks said. “Don’t speed. Just come right now. Right now.”

“And I was just screaming ‘Tell me, tell me, tell me,’ ” Tracy said.

    Parks wouldn’t.

So Tracy called Resmondo. He wouldn’t say either.

She hung up and called her sister, who’d found out about the shooting just minutes before and told her.

“You know, I don’t think he was even thinking about his family,” Tracy said. “I think he wanted out of the chaos and what he called ‘madness’ of the whole thing.”

I never said I would retire: Karunanidhi

“If you fix a date, I will retire from politics,” Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi said in a lighter vein on Monday.

Replying to repeated and specific questions from reporters on his earlier hints of retirement, Karunanidhi said he had never used the word retire.

“If journalists in Coimbatore want me to quit, you fix a date and I will do so,” he said at a press conference here at the end of the five day world classical Tamil conference, his pet project.

Asked about the possibility of early assembly polls in view of the “success” of the Tamil conference, Karunanidhi said: “Are elections more important when the issue of Tamil language is being taken up?”

Karunanidhi had dropped hints about staying away from active politics, fuelling speculation that he might retire after the World Classical Tamil Conference to hand over the mantle to his son and Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin.

However, amid reports of a succession war between Stalin and his elder brother and Union minister M K Alagiri, Karunanidhi had subsequently refrained from making any reference to the issue.

Rahul Gandhi: The future of Indian politics turns 41

    2010-06-28 15:10:00

The mobile phone of Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi was stolen from his checked-in baggage at the Delhi Airport last week, after he arrived here from London.

The handset was, however, found a couple of days later from a baggage handler working at the IGI, airport sources said.

Rahul noticed that his handset was missing from his bag after he returned home from the airport and informed the officials of the Special Protection Group, which guards him.

The SPG then contacted the CISF, which in turn started a quiet investigation and reviewed the close-circuit TV footage, the sources said.

Rahul Gandhi: The future of Indian politics

The technical surveillance carried out by the CISF helped them detect the lost mobile phone.

The CISF personnel identified two baggage handlers as suspects and questioned them. One of them accepted that he had stolen the phone from the baggage and handed it over to the security personnel, the sources said.

No case was lodged in the incident as it would have brought the matter into limelight, they said, adding that the instrument contained personal and official numbers and other information related to Gandhi.

The sources, however, refused to give details about the flight Gandhi took or the date and time he arrived here from London citing security reasons.

They said such incidents were now occurring frequently at the IGI Airport and steps were being taken to contain them.

“We have taken the matter seriously. We have spoken to the airport authorities and the airlines regarding background checks before recruiting baggage handlers,” the sources said.

    JUNE 28, 2010, 6:09 A.M. ET

Robert Byrd, the 92-year-old West Virginia Democrat who served in the U.S. Senate for 51 years, died Monday.

A spokesman for the family, Jesse Jacobs, said Mr. Byrd died peacefully at about 3 a.m. at Inova Hospital in Fairfax, Va. His health had been failing for several years.

A master of Senate procedures and orator whose Stentorian tones aimed to evoke the roots of the republic (if not Rome), Mr. Byrd served longer, voted more frequently, and probably used the arcane Senate rules to more effect any previous denizen of the nation’s senior legislative house.

Mr. Byrd inhabited numerous roles in a life that took him from a childhood in the coalfields of West Virginia to Senate Majority Leader. In his early years, he was a gas station attendant, a welder, and self-taught butcher, then a West Virginia state legislator.

After he was elected to the House of Representatives in 1952, his political positions veered widely between the now almost extinct Southern conservative Democrats of mid-century to that of the more conventional liberal of today. But his reputation never rested on ideology, but rather on his persuasiveness, his sheer effort, and, occasionally, his willingness to filibuster.

Most salient were the twin images of a Washington stalwart.

First was the self-appointed champion of the Constitution, brandishing his breast-pocket copy of the government’s foundational document on the Senate floor while inveighing against usurpation of the Senate’s powers by the Executive branch.

Second was the crafty legislative pro with one hand in the pork barrel, the Democratic majority leader and Appropriations committee chair who managed to slip into legislation so many programs benefiting his state that more than 30 Federally-funded buildings were named after him.

A Senator starting in 1959, Mr. Byrd at first voted the conservative southern Democratic line. He strongly opposed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. He likened antipoverty measures to rent supplements, and voted in favor of the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution that set the stage for U.S. military involvement in Vietnam.

Yet by the late 1970s, when he was first named Senate Majority Leader, the one-time kleagle in the Ku Klux Klan had moderated his position on social issues to the point where he favored the Equal Rights Amendment.

When Mr. Byrd voted against measures authorizing both the Gulf War in 1990 and the invasion of Iraq in 2002, it was on the grounds that the Senate was giving up its constitutional power to declare war. In later years, he called his Gulf of Tonkin vote a “mistake” and a “sin.”

Raised by impoverished relatives after his mother died in the 1917 global flu pandemic, Mr. Byrd worked at blue-collar jobs before being elected to the West Virginia House of Delegates in 1947. His talents as an orator had emerged even earlier as he drew crowds as a lay Baptist preacher. He liked to entertain the crowds who came to see him campaign by playing bluegrass numbers like “Cripple Creek” on his fiddle.

Mr. Byrd was wildly popular in West Virginia, but his membership in the Ku Klux Klan in the 1940s became a campaign issue when he ran for the U.S. House of Representatives in 1952. He managed to get elected after explaining away his “mistake of youth.”

Lack of education rankled him, and he was throughout life an avid autodidact. He read entire dictionaries, the classics, and was fond of quoting Latin poets on the Senate floor.

“His knowledge more closely reflects that of a senator from the 19th century than one from the 20th or 21st,” Don Ritchie, an associate Senate historian once said. “He keeps reminding them that there are reasons why we do things the way we do.” [The American Prospect 2002]

As a Congressman, Mr. Byrd began taking law classes, but had trouble balancing his responsibilities. “Having to face re-election every two years when I was in the House significantly delayed my law studies,” Mr. Byrd wrote in his autobiography. Being a Senator gave him more free time.

In 1963, after a decade of study, he became the only U.S. Senator on record to earn a law degree while in office. President John F. Kennedy conferred the degree on Mr. Byrd during graduation ceremonies at American University.

Mr. Byrd’s commitment to voter service began early, perhaps later to morphing into his pork-barrel reputation.

“No item beneficial to West Virginia was too large or too small for me to give my close attention to,” Byrd wrote in his autobiography. He supported repeal of the Taft-Hartley Act and other labor-friendly legislation that would benefit his coal-mining constituents.

Residents of West Virginia rarely wavered in their support. In 1970, Byrd became the first politician to ever carry all of the state’s 55 counties in an election.

Richard Brisbin, associate professor of political science at West Virginia University, said polls showed Mr. Byrd was “clearly the most popular and well known and well-respected figure in the state.”

Mr. Byrd fostered a reputation for legislative persistence and knowledge of Senate rules. In a closely fought 1971 race, he beat Sen. Edward Kennedy for the position of Majority Whip. He became Majority Leader in 1977, and helped push through President Carter’s energy package, overcoming a two-week filibuster over gas-price regulations.

Mr. Byrd frankly acknowledged his love of the Senate’s intricate guidelines.

“Nobody has ever used the rules of the Senate more than I have,” he once said. In 1960 he set a record for the longest filibuster with a speech that stretched 21 hours and 8 minutes and dwelled at length on one of his favorite foods, the raisin.

Mr. Byrd was an important player during the run-up to the planned impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton in 1998. Warning that the Senate was teetering on the brink of “the black pit of partisan self-indulgence,” Mr. Byrd helped broker an agreement that led to the President’s censure.

As impeachment loomed for President Richard Nixon during the Watergate affair in 1974, Mr. Byrd opposed resignation on the grounds that “the question of guilt or innocence would never be fully resolved.” With an eye as ever toward constitutional integrity, Mr. Byrd announced on the Senate floor: “This would change our system from one of fixed tenure to one in which a president would remain in office only by popular approval.”

    President Nixon resigned anyway.

During the past decade, Mr. Byrd was among the most strident of the Bush administration’s critics, repeatedly warning the president to read the Constitution or face impeachment himself.

Shortly after the 2008 election, facing rumblings over his age in the face of an economic crisis, Mr. Byrd announced he was stepping down after a decade as chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee. From that post, he had enabled his home state to dramatically build up its infrastructure and services, adding highways, bridges, health centers, scholarships and funding for higher education. His critics had crowned him “King of Pork,” but at home the state legislator had dubbed him “West Virginian of the Twentieth Century.”

“West Virginia has always had four friends,” Mr. Byrd said after winning re-election in November 2000. “God Almighty, Sears Roebuck, Carter’s Liver Pills and Robert C. Byrd.”

Former teen tennis star Jennifer Capriati, 34, was hospitalized Sunday after paramedics responded to a call for a possible overdose from a hotel in Riviera Beach, Fla. Capriati’s father said his daughter is recovering. She won 14 career titles and a gold medal at the 1992 Olympics and made headlines when she was charged with marijuana possession in 1994, resulting in the mug shot seen at left. In an interview with the New York Daily News in July 2007, Capriati admitted to suffering from depression and having suicidal thoughts. She said, “When I stopped playing, that’s when all this came crumbling down. If I don’t have [tennis], who am I? What am I? I was just alive because of this. I’ve had to ask, ‘Well, who is Jennifer? What if this is gone now?’ I can’t live off of this the rest of my life.”

    James W. Rooney

    • BORN: May 22, 1945
    • DIED: June 7, 2010
    • LOCATION: Arlington, VA

    from:  http://www.tributes.com/show/James-Rooney-88761569

    —————————————————————————————-

James W. Rooney, 65, a retired Army lieutenant colonel who saw action as a Special Forces aviator in Vietnam and later served as a military aide to Charlie Wilson, the flamboyant mastermind behind a covert U.S.-funded war in Afghanistan in the 1980s, died June 7 at his condominium in Arlington. He had liver disease.

Col. Rooney joined the Army in 1967 and served overseas in Vietnam as a fixed-wing pilot. During one mission, while flying a light reconnaissance aircraft in support of a besieged Army unit, Col. Rooney swooped low over enemy bunkers to attract fire and mark their positions. For his bravery, he received the Distinguished Flying Cross.

After graduating from law school in 1981, Col. Rooney served as counsel to the deputy chief of staff of the Army. He later served as a legislative liaison for the Army secretary and worked closely with Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) of the Armed Services Committee on legislation to improve housing benefits for soldiers and their families.

In the mid-1980s, Col. Rooney also served as military aide to the legendary Rep. Charlie Wilson (D-Tex.) of the House Appropriations subcommittee on defense. Wilson, who died Feb. 10 and was the subject of a recent book and movie, both called “Charlie Wilson’s War,” led the covert U.S. funding of mujaheddin guerrilla fighters in Afghanistan battling Soviet forces.

Col. Rooney retired in 1989 and started a consulting firm, Rooney Group International, and simultaneously served as president of the U.S. subsidiary of the Nordic Ammunition Co.

James Walter Rooney, a native of Boston, graduated from Merrimack College in 1975. He received a master’s degree in education from the University of Southern California in 1976 and did graduate work at the University of Chicago. He received a law degree from Boston’s Suffolk University in 1981.

In addition to the Distinguished Flying Cross, his military decorations included the Bronze Star Medal and eight Air Medals.

Col. Rooney became good friends with Wilson — the congressman was the best man at his wedding — and later moved into the high-flying Texan’s condo above the Marine Corps Memorial in Arlington. Col. Rooney removed Wilson’s Jacuzzi, but kept his riding stirrup doorknocker.

Survivors include his wife, Jill Davidson of Fairfax Station; three sisters; and two brothers.

Oscar-winning sound technician Resul Pookutty is among 135 artistes and executives who have been invited by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to join as a voting member.

“The work of these individuals has been appreciated by moviegoers all around the world. The Academy is proud to invite each and every one of them,” said Academy president Tom Sherak in a statement.

Elated over the news, Pookutty said that this is another recognition of the work by Indian artistes. “It’s a great honour to be nominated as a voting member by the board of governors,” Pookutty said.

Pookutty is the first Asian sound technician to be a member of the Academy.

The sound technician won an Oscar for his work in the Danny Boyle directed Slumdog Millionaire in 2009 along with A R Rahman who received two golden statuettes for his musical compositions in the same film.

The new members will be welcomed into the Academy at a reception at the Academy’s Fairbanks Centre for Motion Picture Study in Beverly Hills in September.

The Academy’s membership policies would have allowed a maximum of 180 new members in 2010, but as in other recent years, the several branch committees endorsed fewer candidates than were proposed to them.

Voting membership in the organisation has now held steady at just under 6,000 members since 2003.

Among others in the list are Inglorious Basterds actor Christopher Walts, director Jacque Audiard of A Prophet fame and U2 lead singer Bono.

Jay-Z and Justin Bieber. Kanye West and T.I. John Legend and Prince.

Hosted by Queen Latifah, Sunday night’s BET Awards promise to be a star-studded affair, and organizers say it will be packed with more performances than in previous years.

West and T.I. will make their TV comebacks on the show. West is set to perform, returning to the spotlight after keeping a low profile since last year’s MTV Video Music Awards, when the rapper swiped the microphone from stunned “Best Female Video” winner Taylor Swift and declared that Beyonce should have won the award. T.I. will also return to the stage for his first televised performance since his release from prison in December.

Legend and Prince will receive special honors at Sunday’s ceremony, to be broadcast live from the Shrine Auditorium. Legend will be presented with BET’s humanitarian award for his work the Show Me campaign, which aims to eradicate poverty worldwide through education and health care. The artist currently known as Prince will be feted with musical tributes as the recipient of the network’s lifetime achievement award.

The BET Awards honor the year’s best in music, sports and film in 19 categories.

Jay-Z leads nominees with five nods, including best male hip-hop artist and two for video of the year, for “Empire State of Mind” and “Run This Town.”

Czech President Vaclav Klaus will name Civic Democrat leader Petr Necas as the next prime minister on Monday, ushering in what should be the strongest government in a decade to tackle economic reforms. The Civic Democrats are leading coalition talks with two other center-right parties, TOP09 and Public Affairs, after the three won a combined 118 seats out of 200 in a May 28-29 election with pledges of austerity and fighting corruption. If the three parties agree on a coalition government they would have a strong majority to kick-start key reforms in pensions and healthcare compared with previous cabinets over the last decade which lacked a strong enough majority and the will to reform.

Talks between the parties have dragged because of disputes over policy and ministerial posts, including who should run the important finance ministry. Necas has said he wants a deal by early July, in time to prepare the 2011 budget.

“Tomorrow at 10 a.m. I will name Petr Necas as prime minister,” Klaus said on Sunday in a live television interview.

Kyrgyzstan’s interim president said voters approved a new constitution Sunday that will allow the Central Asian nation to form a legitimate government after months of turmoil.

President Roza Otunbayeva called the referendum a success, saying it took place without incident and paves the way for holding parliamentary elections in the fall. The vote came just weeks after rampages killed as many as 2,000 people and forced 400,000 ethnic Uzbeks to temporarily flee.

“We have passed the new constitution for our republic,” she said at a news conference, adding that turnout was high at 65 percent.

“It will not be an interim but a legal and legitimate government,” she added. “We are leaving the word interim behind.”

The Central Election Commission said with just over 10 percent of all precincts counted, over 60 percent voted for the constitution and only 7 percent voted against it.

The vote — supported by the U.N., the U.S. and Russia — is seen as an important step on the road to democracy for the interim government, which came to power after former President Kurmanbek Bakiyev was ousted in April following deadly street protests. The provisional government, which faces deep internal divisions, needs the vote to legitimize its power ahead of parliamentary elections in October.

The interim government has accused Bakiyev’s followers of instigating the recent attacks to try to stop the referendum, a charge that Bakiyev, now living in Belarus, denies.

Uzbeks have mostly supported the interim government, while Kyrgyz in the south backed Bakiyev, whose regime was seen as corrupt.

The government changed voting rules on Friday so minority Uzbeks who had fled the violence but had no identify documents on them could still vote. Still, some displaced Uzbeks complained about having little access to the vote.

Michael Phelps received “a wakeup call” during a weekend of mixed results at the Paris Open.
The 14-time Olympic champion capped the two-day meet by winning the 200-meter medley in 1 minute, 58.95 seconds Sunday, but was disappointed that he struggled in freestyle races and said he needs to train harder.”I’m not worried,” Phelps said. “Am I upset? Yes. Very. When I’m upset, I think it’s the best time for me to try and use that as a motivation.”

American Patrick Todd took second in the medley in 2:00.81 and Italian Federico Turrini was third in 2:02.31.

Phelps, who finished third in the 200 freestyle earlier Sunday, said he has to rededicate himself to training if he wants to regain his best form.

“Hopefully, it’s a wake up call. If it’s not, then I have to change a lot,” he said. “I blame myself. You’ve got to be responsible for your own action.”

The American had expected to improve on his times since the Charlotte UltraSwim last month.

“It’s a kind of the same times that I went in Charlotte, my first meet back,” Phelps said. “I’m clearly disappointed, but it’s my own fault. I know I didn’t do the training when I needed to do it at the right time.”

Phelps had a good start in the 200 meter free, but quickly faded. He touched in 1:47.54. Yannick Agnel of France set a national record by winning in 1:46.30 and Sebastiaan Verschuren of the Netherlands was second in 1:46.97.

Fresh from three weeks of training in Colorado, Phelps won the 200 butterfly on Saturday but was last in the 100 freestyle.

“I know what I have to work at to improve,” he said. “I thought I had done better training (after Charlotte), but clearly I have not. I’m the only one who can fix it.”

Phelps swam in Paris as part of his preparations for the U.S. championships in August, which will determine the American roster for the Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine, Calif., later in the month.

1459: Here’s a run down of the top 10: Vettel Hamilton, Button, Barrichello, Kubica, Sutil, Kobayashi, Buemi, Alonso and De la Rosa. A great day for BMW Sauber and a mention for Williams, who have Barrichello in fourth.davros182 on 606: “Kobayashi wins driver of the day I guess! Fabulous work.”

Blue_Phoenix on 606: “Would have liked to have seen Hamilton and Vettel race but it wasn’t to be. Still I think McLaren could have the edge now. They get their new updates for Silverstone… if they work (lets face it McLaren updates usually do work) that could put them ahead of the Red Bulls in outright pace.”

BBC F1 analyst Martin Brundle: “If Vettel wins the world championship this year then this victory will be a very significant moment.”

Simon in Halifax via text: “This was the best race of the year so far, why can’t they all be like this? Webber was very lucky, it shows how strong an F1 car is.”

1451: “Germany one, England nil,” Button says to Vettel as they wait for their cue to get on the podium. Vettel clenches his fists as he receives the applause when they do appear in front of the stage. Anthem time.

1449: That’s Vettel’s second win of the season and Red Bull’s first triumph since Webber won in Monaco. Hamilton now leads Button by six points in the championship, Vettel moves up to third place.

1446: What a race. Vettel is going bonkers in his cockpit after that win. “That will be Germany’s best result of the day,” he is told by team boss Christian Horner. Vettel doesn’t seem to hear him. “That’s what I’m talking about,” he shouts. “Back on track. Thank you, every single one.”

SEBASTIAN VETTEL WINS THE EUROPEAN GRAND PRIX

With just a year to go for the Assembly polls, senior Congress leader and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has quit as West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (WBPCC) president. Congress Legislature Party leader in West Bengal Assembly Manas Ranjan Bhunia has been appointed to the post.

Mukherjee, who was appointed as WBPCC chief in 2001, has been for quite sometime impressing upon the leadership to have a “full-time” president in view of the Assembly polls.

The announcement by Sonia Gandhi comes a day after Mukherjee held long parleys over dinner with Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee.

    Saina

    2010-06-27 13:40:00

Ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal continued her rampaging form as she completed a spectacular hat-trick of titles by clinching the Indonesia Open Super Series with a straight-game triumph over Japan’s Sayaka Sato here on Sunday.

Unbeaten for the past three weeks, the top seeded defending champion defeated her unseeded but resolute rival 21-19 13-21 21-11 in a rollercoaster encounter that lasted 45 minutes.

This was Saina’s third successive title, having won the Indian Open Grand Prix at home and the Singapore Open Super Series Tournament last week. This is also the 20-year-old’s third Super Series title overall.

Saina Nehwal breaks into top-3 of world rankings

In a see-saw battle, the 19-year-old Sato matched the defending champion shot for shot for most part of the opening game but was undone by her own mistakes at crucial junctures.

The first game that lasted 14 minutes had both the players tied 11-11 at one stage and though Saina remained ahead for most part after that, a gritty Sato did have her share of chances.

Leading 20-18, Saina could have finished it off on her own serve but she handed Sato a chance by hitting the shuttle wide.

But Sato could not capitalise and smacked a forehand into the net to give Saina the opening game.

The second game saw Sato making a comeback with the change of ends also leading to a change in fortunes. The Japanese proved to be the more dominant of the two players in these 15 minutes as she raced to a 4-9 lead.

Sato sent down some powerful shots from the baseline and Saina could only watch as they fell out of her range. The frustration of being out-witted by a rival ranked 26th in the world showed when Saina clinched her fist at one of Sato’s unforced errors.

Saina Nehwal – winner over the years

Shaken by the setback, Saina roared back in the decisive third game. The Indian took a comprehensive 11-5 lead but continuing her never-say-die attitude, Sato reduced the margin to 9-13.

The Indian, however, was in no mood to slip up and emerged triumphant after reeling off four successive points.

A jubilant Saina let out a huge scream after winning the title, which also made her richer by USD 18,750.

Few minutes barelly passed and Ivory Coast did it again. The score is now North Korea 0-2 Ivory Coast

24 Ivory Coast fans have their backs turned on the play, which I think speaks volumes about their confidence in their team securing victory today.

23 North Korea have a free-kick in a dangerous position. Tiote is the guilty party, and 25-yards from goal, Hong curls it just wide of the upright.

22 Nearly more trouble as Drogba gets his head on a cross, but the ball is deflected away by North Korea. No corner given, though, and the goal survives another beating.

20 The record books will show Romaric got the goal – but Drogba deserves all the credit. The Chelsea striker takes down a floated cross, and in one movement, rolls his man before smashing a half-volley against the underside of the bar. It bounces back out and Romaric is on hand to nod it past the stranded keeper. 2-0 Ivory Coast.

    GOAL! 2-0 IVORY COAST!

In the opening fight of Strikeforce: Fedor vs Werdum on Showtime, former lightweight champ Josh Thomson took on veteran Pat Healy. It was expected to be a tune up fight for Thomson, but Healy gave Thomson two and a half tough rounds before succumbing to a rear naked choke in the third.

In the first, Thomson immediately shot in and forced a grappling battle that ate up the first round. Thomson repeatedly threatened submissions with armbars and triangles but Healy evaded all Thomson’s attempts.

Round two saw Healy take down Thomson with a big slam, took his back and worked for a rear naked choke while landing shots to the head of Thomson. Thomson escaped to half guard and forced a battle for guard before Thomson stood up only to be slammed again with two minutes left. Suddenly Thomson threatened an arm bar. Then Healy attacked Thomson’s leg before once again being threatened with an arm bar. Healy escaped but spent the rest of the round on top.

They came out punching in the third. Thomson stuffed a Healy shot and landed a nice overhand right. Thomson threw a front kick and Healy caught it. Healy looked tired and visibly slowed as Thomson peppered him with jabs. Healy answered with some jabs of his own and initiated a clinch but Thomson circled away. Then Healy clinched again and got the take down. He took Thomson’s back and quickly got thrown to his back. After a moment in north-south, Thomson attacked Healy’s back. Then he attacked with a rear naked choke that appeared to threaten Healy, but the seasoned submission artist fended off the choke for what seemed an eternity before tapping.

    numerology for Frank Shamrock (retirement)

    Jun 26, 2010

Mixed martial arts pioneer Frank Shamrock has called it a career.

The first man to win the belt that would become the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s light-heavyweight title announced his retirement tonight at Strikeforce’s show in San Jose. He hasn’t fought since losing to Nick Diaz at a catchweight bout of 179 pounds in April 2009, on Strikeforce’s first show under its current arrangement with Showtime.

“My time has come,” Shamrock told the crowd at the H-P Pavilion in San Jose. “The stars like Gilbert Melendez and Cristiane Cyborg. They are the future and I am the past. Tonight I announce my retirement and I say this will be the last time I walk into this cage as a fighter.”

It has been years since Shamrock was a truly significant fighter, but he helped pave the way for the current generation of mixed martial artists.

Shamrock learned catch wrestling techniques under his adoptive brother Ken in the Lions Den during the early 1990s, and eventually followed in his footsteps to become a titleholder for Pancrase in an era when it was still the top MMA promotion in Japan. His battles with Pancrase pioneers Masakatsu Funaki, Minoru Suzuki and Bas Rutten in the mid-1990s were among the most memorable in that organization’s history.

After Pancrase’s relationship with Lions Den deteriorated, Shamrock found himself fighting in Rings and other promotions while drawing UFC’s eye. He made his UFC debut by winning the organization’s 200-pound championship in 16 seconds with an armbar on Olympic champion wrestler Kevin Jackson.

Shamrock defended his belt four times in memorable fights, including a March 1998 knockout of Igor Zinoviev that remains arguably the most brutal slam in UFC history; a difficult, gritty 16-minute grappling battle with jiu-jitsu expert Jeremy Horn; and a four-round triumph of endurance over Tito Ortiz.

Shamrock walked away from UFC after tapping out Ortiz and fought only sporadically over the next several years, while spending more time as a trainer and TV commentator. The last bout in which he was truly competitive ended with a broken arm inflicted by Cung Le in March 2008.

Beyond the fight record, Shamrock’s most important contribution to the sport was emphasizing the “mixed” part of MMA. He and Rutten were among the first fighters to train extensively in both striking and grappling techniques, and introduce advanced physical training techniques.

They were so far ahead of their contemporaries in the 1990s that at the end of the decade, there was virtually no argument about their status as the top fighters in MMA. If the sport eventually passed them by, it only did so because of the work they laid down in the first place.

Robert Boss said the Rush game plan Saturday night was to throw the whole arsenal at visiting Orlando.

And the 6-foot 5 fullback ended up one of the main weapons as he hauled in two touchdown passes and rushed for another as the Rush topped the Predators 55-42 before a crowd of 8,120 at Allstate Arena.

“When you don’t get to touch the ball that often, you try to take advantage of your opportunities,” said Boss, who caught four passes for 60 yards and rushed for 12 more on six carries. “Especially as a career offensive lineman, you relish that.”

Russ Michna was back at quarterback after missing a game for a commitment with a United Football League minicamp. He rushed for one touchdown and threw for four more — including a critical fourth quarter strike to wide receiver Samie Parker.

John Edwards's Daughter: Our Lives Were 'Savaged' | Elizabeth Edwards

    Friday June 25, 2010 01:50 PM EDT

Elizabeth Edwards – and, for the first time, daughter Cate – are opening up about John Edwards’s infidelity and the breakup of the marriage.

In PEOPLE’s edition next week, Cate, 28, who lives in Washington and clerks for a federal judge, and her mother talk candidly about their relationships with John now, Elizabeth’s cancer and other issues.

“There are the things she taught without words,” Cate writes about her mother in a bonus essay for PEOPLE. Like, “how to continue to live your life on your own terms when it somehow becomes savaged by people you never invited into it.”

PEOPLE’s extensive interview was Elizabeth’s first in more than a year and her first public comments since several tell-all books and interviews about the former presidential candidate’s affair called Elizabeth’s own character into question earlier this year.

“It’s my story and I’m writing it from here on out – nobody else,” Elizabeth says in the interview as the paperback edition of her bestselling book Resilience, is released.

The paperback includes a new chapter reflecting on the worst of the fallout from husband John’s infidelity and on their split at the end of last year.
