Michael Waltrip, NASCAR and Swan Racing are teaming up to help bring eyeballs and attention to helping the community of Newtown, Conn., through the Sandy Hook School Support Fund.

Two-time Daytona 500 champion Waltrip will drive the No. 26 Toyota for Swan Racing in the race on Feb. 24, in honor of the 26 victims of the Sandy Hook shooting. His car will carry a decal that will remind fans and race viewers they can text donations to NEWTOWN to 80888.

The effort came about after officials from NASCAR, Swan Racing and Waltrip traveled to Newtown to meet with leaders in the community, first responders and families of the 26 victims.

Waltrip said that going to Newtown and shaking hands and hugging people that were directly affected was an amazing experience. He added that it was very fulfilling to be able to make the people in that community smile and give them something to look forward to.

“The car is beautiful and they loved it,” Waltrip said Thursday at NASCAR Media Day. “They were in disbelief that people would care enough to do what we’re going to do for them.

“As happens a lot in life with me, I felt like actually thanking them for allowing me to come into their world and allowing us to do this. They wanted to thank us for doing it, and that’s a great feeling.”

All monies from the fund, which was established by United Way of Western Connecticut and Newtown Savings Bank, will go toward helping the community heal from the events of Dec. 14, 2012.

Waltrip also confirmed that all three of his Sprint Cup cars will carry the decal for the Daytona 500, as well.

“Driving the No. 26 Sandy Hook School Support Fund Toyota is like nothing I have ever been part of in my NASCAR career,” Waltrip said. “It will be an emotional week knowing that we have the potential to do so much good for the Newtown community. I’m racing for a reason.”

CEO Brian France and his wife announced they will donate $50,000, which the NASCAR Foundation will match.

“That’s $100,000 already, and we just started,” Waltrip said. “And I know our 75 million fans will rally around texting “NEWTOWN” to 80888. We can make a real difference.”

France said he was excited to witness firsthand the NASCAR’s community’s embrace and support of the Sandy Hook School Support Fund.

“Being in Newtown last week and delivering a moment of happiness to that community was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced,” said France. “Looking out at a room of smiling faces amidst the aftermath of a horrible tragedy was very powerful. It hit me that the NASCAR industry and our passionate fan base have an unbelievable opportunity to rally around this cause and make a huge difference for a community in need.”

Newtown resident Betsy Paynter watched the NRA’s announcement live on television Friday. Midway through the speech by NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre, who called for armed guards in every school in the USA, she turned off the TV.

“Completely off the mark,” said Paynter, 46, a marketing executive with two children in middle school in Newtown. “There’s a need for security systems but not for someone else to have a gun in the school. It’s not what you want your kindergartner to see.”

Putting more guns in school will only encourage gunmen and militias to further stockpile weapons, Paynter said. “That’s just encouraging more fear,” she said.

The fact that the NRA announced it will be supporting an initiative to put more armed guards in school just an hour after the embattled community observed a moment of silence for the 20 children and six adults killed last week showed poor taste from the gun lobby group, Paynter said.

Even before the press conference ended, Facebook posts by Newtown residents were starting to appear criticizing the NRA’s timing and announcement, she said.

“You can’t get any more rude than that,” she said. “It’s really ugly.”

Newtown resident David Stout, 49, an energy consultant, said he had hoped to hear an honest announcement from the NRA regarding background checks on all gun sales or closing other loopholes – not putting more armed guards in schools.

“Folks in Newtown are appalled by that suggestion,” said Stout, a hunter who owns several hunting rifles. “I understand we want to protect our kids, but there are other ways to do that. We don’t want to turn our schools into prisons.”

Stout is a member of a grass-roots groups formed after the Dec. 14 shooting called Newtown United, which supports the victims’ families and is advocating tighter gun rules. He said it was “ridiculous” for the NRA to blame the media and video games for such mass shootings and not mention the easy accessibility to assault rifles and ammunition.

“It’s ridiculous we can’t all come together and say, ‘Ok, what makes sense?'” Stout said. “Something has to change.”

He added: “More guns is not the solution.”

One was a first-grade teacher who reportedly threw herself in front of the gunman to shield her students. Another was a well-liked principal.

Both were among those killed when Adam Lanza, 20, stormed into Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., with guns blazing Friday, killing six adults and 20 children before killing himself.

Lanza also killed a seventh adult in the rampage — his mother, Nancy Lanza. She was killed in her home, shot in the face before her son’s assault on the school, sources told ABC News.

Few other victims’ names had emerged as of early this morning, but that was expected to change at a police news conference. Connecticut State Police Lt. Paul Vance said officers had identified the names of all the victims at the school.

“They were successful working with the medical examiners establishing positive identification,” he said. “Our detectives then went and made notification to all of the family members.”

The few that emerged early came with compelling stories attached.

Vicki Soto, 27, one of the adult victims, loved being a teacher, her cousin, Jim Wiltsie, told ABC News’ Chris Cuomo Friday. In fact, her first-grade students’ safety was such a high priority that Soto reportedly lost her life protecting them.

“The family was informed that she was trying to shield, get her children into a closet and protect them from harm, and by doing that put herself between the gunman and the children,” Wiltsie said. “And that’s when she was tragically shot and killed.

“I’m very proud to have known Vicki,” Wiltsie added. “Her life dream was to be a teacher. And her instincts kicked in when she saw there was harm coming to her students.

“It brings peace to know that Vicki was doing what she loved, protecting the children,” he said. “And in our eyes, she is a hero.”

The circumstances of Dawn Hochsprung’s death are less clear, but those who have spoken have had nice things to say about the Sandy Hook principal.

“When we had our orientation, you could tell she loved her job,” Brenda Lediski, a parent, told ABC News by phone.

Hochsprung, 47, only became principal of Sandy Hook in recent years, according to a local news report.

“She was always enthusiastic, always smiling, always game to do anything,” Kristin Larson, a former PTA secretary, told the Boston Globe. “When I saw her at the beginning of the school year, she was hugging everyone.”
