Blake Bell

June 25, 2013        11:00AM ET

It didn’t take long in 2007 for Sam Bradford to solidify his starting quarterback status.

In the opener against North Texas, Bradford tied the school record for consecutive completions and broke the record for passing yards in a half. After a five-touchdown performance Week 2 against Miami, the Sooners knew they had their quarterback.

It’s unlikely Blake Bell will have that kind of debut as Oklahoma’s starting quarterback. Still, it shouldn’t take long this time either for OU to determine if Bell is its quarterback of the future. Against the current of a brutal six-game start to the schedule, Bell will either swim and solidify the job — as Bradford did — or he will sink and open the way for Kendal Thompson or Trevor Knight to get their shot.

Last week during a caravan stop in Wichita, coach Bob Stoops reiterated he’s in no hurry to name a starting quarterback. Thompson and Knight both have talent. Despite his offseason dustup with police, Thompson remains one of the hardest workers on the team. He also has displayed a great feel for escaping trouble in the pocket and making plays downfield. Knight is an athletic freak who has the potential to be prolific as a dual threat. By several accounts, both Thompson and Knight have been sharp during 7-on-7 workouts so far this summer.

But given his seniority, his relative understanding of the offense, his experience on the field and the way he closed out the spring in the Red-White game, it’s difficult to envision a scenario in which Bell isn’t ultimately named the starter for the opener. Whether he’s able to hold the job will be another storyline.

All of the Sooners’ first six opponents are coming off bowl appearances. Yes, OU will be heavy home favorites in the first three games against Louisiana-Monroe, West Virginia and Tulsa. But the second trio of games — at Notre Dame, TCU and Texas — figures to be the defining stretch of the season. For Bell, especially.

The Irish lost quarterback Everett Golson during the offseason. But they should have another formidable defense, headlined by perhaps the best defensive line in college football. The game is also in South Bend, Ind., where Notre Dame has won 10 of 11.

After facing one of the top defenses in the country, the Sooners will see what should be the best defense in the Big 12. The Horned Frogs feature two defensive All-American candidates in end Devonte Fields and cornerback Jason Verrett.

And following all of that, the Sooners will still have the Red River Rivalry, which has both vindicated and vanquished many quarterbacks over the years.

By that point, the Sooners will know a lot about Bell. Including whether he’s their guy going forward.

Los Angeles Angels center fielder Mike Trout (27) (5971760364).jpg

7/5/2013           12:00 A.M. ET

All the votes have been cast for the 2013 All-Star Game’s starting spots, and the baseball world now awaits Saturday evening’s announcement of the final tallies.

The All-Stars will be unveiled at 6:30 p.m. ET on Saturday on the 2013 MLB All-Star Game Selection Show presented by Taco Bell, televised nationally on FOX.

Voting concluded at 11:59 p.m. ET on Thursday for the eight position players in each league, as well as the American League’s designated hitter. The winners will represent the two leagues in the All-Star Game at Citi Field on Tuesday, July 16.

As of the most recent voting updates announced earlier this week, Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina was the National League’s leading vote-getter with 5,093,645. Meanwhile, Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera led all of Major League Baseball with 5,844,165 votes.

The tightest races in each league appear to be for the final outfield spot. In an AL East showdown, Toronto’s Jose Bautista led Baltimore’s Nick Markakis by fewer than 150,000 votes, with Mike Trout and Adam Jones leading the pack among AL outfielders.

The race for the NL’s final two starting outfield spots was even tighter, as Carlos Gonzalez, Justin Upton and Bryce Harper were separated by a total of 26,213 votes. As of Monday, Harper was the odd man out.

The wait for the news of the NL’s starting second base spot is also sure to be tense, as the Reds’ Brandon Phillips hopes to hold off late charges from the Cardinals’ Matt Carpenter and the Giants’ Marco Scutaro.

From Saturday until Thursday, be sure to return to MLB.com and cast your 2013 All-Star Game Final Vote Sponsored by freecreditscore.com for the final player for each League’s All-Star roster.

And the voting doesn’t end there. The final phase of All-Star Game voting will again have fans participating in the official voting for the Ted Williams All-Star Game Most Valuable Player Award presented by Chevrolet. During the Midsummer Classic, fans will vote exclusively online at MLB.com via the 2013 All-Star Game MLB.com MVP Vote, and their voice will represent 20 percent of the official vote determining the recipient of the Arch Ward Trophy.

Come to MLB.com for extensive online coverage of the All-Star Week festivities. The 84th All-Star Game will be televised nationally by FOX Sports, in Canada by Rogers Sportsnet and RDS, and worldwide by partners in more than 200 countries via MLB International’s independent feed. ESPN Radio and ESPN Radio Deportes will provide national radio coverage of the All-Star Game. MLB Network and SiriusXM also will also provide comprehensive All-Star Week coverage. For more information, please visit allstargame.com.

Miss South Dakota Teen USA 2012

Kalani will be entering her senior year of high school this fall, where she’ll be participating in varsity football cheer, competitive cheer, and varsity boy’s basketball cheer. She is a member of her school’s Concert Choir and Chamber Choir, and is honored to be a member of the South Dakota All State Chorus. Kalani rounds out her extracurricular activities with a spot on her high school varsity bowling team. Growing up, Kalani participated in gymnastics, dance, bowling leagues, piano recitals, orchestra, band, church and school choir concerts, Girl Scouts, and church youth group.

Kalani says she always puts her all into something she wants. She shares, “Not coming back this year wasn’t an option. Last year my goal was Top 15, but once it came down to the Top 5, it was in my blood. I knew a year ago that I would be back on that stage this year with the ultimate goal of wearing the crown!”

Friday June 07, 2013           12:35am
For the first time since his fallout with the Green Bay Packers, Brett Favre is taking responsibility for his role in the way things ended.
“I was at fault,” Favre said in a Buffalo radio interview on WGR 550. “I feel like both sides had a part in it. If you could go back, would I or them have done things differently? I’m sure both sides would. But you can’t.”
Favre had previously not shown much contrition since being traded by Green Bay to the New York Jets in 2008. That certainly wasn’t a typical player-trade situation, though. Favre had retired following the 2007 season, prompting the Packers to give an unproven Aaron Rodgers a shot as the team’s starter after three years on the bench. When Favre changed his mind and wanted to return as the starter, general manager Ted Thompson wouldn’t budge.
As the relationship got messy between Favre and the franchise that he led for 16 seasons, Green Bay eventually shipped Favre to the Jets. After one year in New York, Favre played his final two NFL seasons with the team he wanted Thompson to trade him to in the first place: the Minnesota Vikings.
“The things that transpired that led to us breaking up, if you will, to me, are over and done with,” Favre said on WGR 550.
Now that Favre is 43 years old and retired for good, Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy has been working towards repairing the team’s relationship with the three-time NFL Most Valuable Player.
Murphy told FOXSportsWisconsin.com in May that he wants Favre “back in the family” and to retire the No. 4 jersey at Lambeau Field.
“I don’t know of any player who would not want that to happen,” Favre told WGR 550. “I’m honored just by the thought. Obviously there was, if you want to call it bad blood or whatever, I just think that people started picking sides. And really, I’m over that and have been over it.
“Mark Murphy and I have talked on numerous occasions. I never expected them to do anything. I’m not one to sit here and say, ‘I think they need to do this and do that.’ They have a very good ball team and that’s their primary focus, and it should have always been, which it has.
“As time goes, it heals a lot of things. I know for me, as I’ve gotten further and further removed from the game, I think of statistics and things of that nature, which I don’t know any player where that didn’t matter some. But it matters a whole lot less now.”
In an interview with Jim Rome in May, Rodgers stated that he wants the Packers to retire Favre’s jersey before 2016. That’s the year when Favre is likely to become a first-ballot Hall of Fame selection.
“When will that happen? I don’t think either side is trying to push the issue,” Favre said on WGR 550. “Mark (Murphy) really came in the last few weeks of my career in Green Bay; he kind of came into a hornet’s nest, if you will. He’s been extremely great in trying to make this work. In our discussions, it will happen. I think both sides are genuine. I know they are. And that’s the way it has to come across because that’s the way it should be.
“We don’t want to go out there waving to the crowd with our backs to each other. And I don’t think that’s going to happen.”
Murphy credited Rodgers with providing a “great first step” in getting Favre back into the fold with the Packers. That was at the NFL Honors show in February when Rodgers and Favre surprisingly presented together on stage, shaking hands and laughing.
“Aaron has said some very nice things,” Favre told WGR 550. “He and I have a good relationship. I had a chance to present an award with him at the Super Bowl and that was for real. It wasn’t for show. And so I think everything will be fine.”
This has been a lot of progress in a short amount of time for Favre and the Packers. A year ago, all of this seemed nearly impossible. The “bad blood,” as Favre called it, just seemed like too much to overcome any time soon. But with Murphy, Rodgers and now Favre all moving in the same direction, it seems that No. 4 could soon be commemorated at Lambeau Field.
“I think things will be fine in due time,” Favre said on WGR 550.

Two more staff members have abruptly left the office of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford, following on the heels of three of their senior colleagues who departed in recent days.

The intrigue over an alleged drug video involving the mayor of Toronto continues to fuel demand for answers to questions about what is going on in the mayor’s office and in his private life.

When Ford walked into his second-floor office at Toronto City Hall Thursday, he was once again bombarded with questions from reporters about the ongoing controversy.

“Can you hear that? Unbelievable, eh?” Ford said, while holding a phone when stepping through a throng of media a step behind a security guard.

Reports first emerged two weeks ago that a video showed Ford smoking what appeared to be crack cocaine. The mayor initially called those allegations untrue and “ridiculous,” later denying the video’s existence. He has also said he does not use crack cocaine and is not addicted to it.

Since then, Ford has seen three senior staff members depart from his office, including two press secretaries who resigned. His former chief of staff said he was fired.

On Thursday, another staffer, Brian Johnston, identified as a policy adviser, left the mayor’s office.

When leaving city hall, Johnston told the media that he had resigned.

Minutes later, reports emerged that a second staffer was also on the way out. CBC News has since confirmed that Kia Nejatian, the mayor’s executive assistant, is gone. It is not immediately clear if he resigned or was fired.

On Thursday afternoon, the mayor’s office released a brief statement confirming that Johnston and Nejatian “are no longer employed in the Office of the Mayor.”

The statement said that Ford wished the departing staffers “all the best in their future endeavours.”

In a telephone interview, Coun. Josh Matlow told CBC News Network it appeared to him that Ford’s office is now “completely dysfunctional,” with the departures being an indication that “he has obviously lost the confidence of the people who work for him for whatever reason.”

Second arrest

Also Thursday, Toronto police announced they had charged a second man with first-degree murder in the killing of 21-year-old Anthony Smith, who appears in a photo beside Ford that is at the centre of the video controversy.

Hanad Mohamed, 23, of Toronto, was arrested in Fort McMurray, Alta., police said Thursday.

He will appear in a Toronto court Friday on a charge of first-degree murder.

Nisar Hashimi, 23, is also charged with first-degree murder in the Smith shooting after turning himself in to police in April.

Smith was killed outside a King Street nightclub in Toronto on March 28. It appears Smith has his arm around Ford in a widely circulated photo provided to the U.S. website Gawker and the Toronto Star by the same people who showed them the alleged video of Ford appearing to smoke crack cocaine.

On Thursday, Ford will likely face questions at city hall about a report in the Toronto Star alleging the mayor told staffers the location of the video, right down to the addresses and unit numbers in a Dixon Road apartment complex in Toronto.

The Star is citing sources who claim to be privy to a meeting in Ford’s office on May 17, where the mayor allegedly passed on the information.

Unanswered questions

Some of Ford’s fellow members of council say the video allegations have been a distraction for both the mayor and the city.

On Thursday, Coun. John Parker said the mayor has to provide answers to the questions that people are asking.

“The mayor would serve his own cause best if he came out and forthrightly addressed all the questions that are arising out of this matter,” Parker said.

Coun. James Pasternak said the ongoing interactions between the mayor and the media over the alleged video and the questions about it are now a daily distraction.

“It is a problem, it is a distraction, it’s damaging to the city. It is taking us off our message of city building. The longer it lasts, the more destructive it becomes, and it’s not healthy for the city,” he said Thursday, just moments before the mayor walked into his office.

The alleged video has not been made public, though Gawker raised $200,000 in funds that it hopes to use to obtain the recording from someone who had been shopping it.

Ford was elected as Toronto’s mayor in 2010. Before that, he served as a city councillor in Etobicoke, the Toronto suburb where he lives with his family.

Since taking office, Ford has made headlines for his work at city hall, as well as his private life. He turned 44 on Tuesday.

The only thing cuter than one newborn giraffe is two of them.

The twin reticulated giraffes, the only living set of giraffe twins in the United States, are now almost three weeks old after being born May 10 at the Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch in New Braunfels, Texas.

Wasswa, the first-born female calf, weighed 95 pounds and was 4-and-a-half feet tall. Nakato, the second-born male calf, was slightly larger, weighing 125 pounds at 5-and-a-half feet tall.

At first, the ranch caretakers were worried the mother wouldn’t have enough milk for two calves, but both twins are thriving.

“As twin births are rare, we had a concern that the mother would not be able to produce enough milk for both offspring,” ranch veterinarian Dr. Kenny Patin said. “We wanted to take prudent measures to guard the twins’ health.”

The Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch, a 400-acre animal preserve just outside San Antonio, is no stranger to baby giraffes. These twins were the 19th and 20th giraffes born at the ranch, which opened in 1984.

Carol, the twins’ mother, born in 2005, was the 12th giraffe born at the ranch.

Goldie Hawn at 67 is still bringing new meaning to the phrase “aging gracefully.”

The legendary actress turned 67 on Nov. 21 but for some reason her age seemed to shine as brightly as the sunny yellow gown she wore at a Cannes event. In a good way.

The longtime partner of actor Kurt Russell and mother of Kate Hudson wowed on the red carpet as she attend amfAR’s annual Cinema Against AIDS charity auction on Thursday at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in France during the 66th Cannes Film Festival, which concludes Sunday.

The timeless beauty, who was one of the gala’s speakers, continuously posed for photographers on the red carpet, giggling away and making pouty kiss faces as they snapped pictures of her, the Daily Mail reported. She was also photographed with designer and amfAR Chairman Kenneth Cole.

“Real Housewives of Atlanta” Kenya Moore has apparently rocked that same neon gown in the past, E!’s “Fashion Police”points out, but we’re on the “Goldie wore it better” camp.

Hawn revealed some of her age-defying secrets on “Dr. Oz” early last year.

The gala reportedly raised an estimated $26 million for AIDS research, according to the Associated Press. Among the big-ticket items up for auction at the event was a trip to space on Richard Branson’s spaceship with a plum seating assignment next to Gatsby himself, Leonardo DiCaprio.

The event was hosted by Sharon Stone and included DiCaprio, Jessica Chastain, Janet Jackson, Milla Jovovich and Hawn sitting side by side as guests.

Models Heidi Klum, Karlie Kloss, Karolina Kurkova, actors Christoph Waltz, Adrien Brody, Nicole Kidman, Stacy Keibler, Dylan McDermott, Audrey TautouRosario Dawson, Kat Graham, singer Janet Jackson, Paris Hilton and producer Harvey Weinstein were among some of the attendees.

Singer Shirley Bassey and Duran Duran also performed.

There’s nothing like an ABBA tune to drive an earworm deep inside the skull. Maybe that’s the key to the group’s longevity.

Thanks to such films as Mama Mia! the blow-dried, spandex-clad ’70s superstars are back in the spotlight with the opening today of a museum in their honor. It’s part of the larger Swedish Music Hall of Fame, which also debuts today.

Never mind that the group split up in 1983. The Swedish tourist office reportedly gets thousands of questions annually from visitors eager to connect with ABBA on its home turf. With ABBA The Museum fans can not only hear the music, but squeeze into some spandex (in a virtual sense, anyway) and record music videos.

4 (April is the 4th month of the year) + 1 (A is the 1st letter of the alphabet) + 7 (g is the 7th letter of the alphabet) + 14 (n is the 14th letter of the alphabet) = 26

So the number 26 ruled her first twenty-seven years of life.

26 = Popular.  Celebrity.  Good looking.  In the news.  Making headlines.

Orb

6:40 p.m. EDT              May 1, 2013
Orb and Verrazano, tied for first in the new points system that determined this year’s Kentucky Derby qualifiers, both drew outside positions in Wednesday’s starting gate draw.

Orb, trained by Kentuckian Shug McGaughey and ridden Joel Rosario, drew the No. 16 position, which is in the auxiliary starting gate.

After the draw, Orb was installed as the 7-2 morning line favorite to win the race, followed by Verrazano at 4-1. Goldencents came after that at t 5-1.

“I like being the favorite. I like being the favorite in every race I’m in because there’s a reason why you’re the favorite,” said McGaughey.

Mylute, to be ridden by Rosie Napravnik, drew the No. 6 position. The odds on Mylute were set at 15-1. Napravnik can become the first female jockey to win the Derby.

Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens, out of retirement after seven years away from racing, will be in the No. 2 position with Oxbow. Stevens is a three-time Derby winner, and Oxbow is trained by Hall of Fame D. Wayne Lukas, four-time Derby winner.

In the 4th spot among the favorites (10-1) will be Revolutionary, who will start in the No. 3 position. Revolutionary, another Pletcher-trained entry, will be ridden by three-time Derby winning jockey Calvin Borel.

Verrazano, one of five Derby entrants trained by Todd Pletcher and to be ridden by John Velasquez, drew the No. 14 spot, the widest position in the main starting gate. Velasquez sustained a cracked rib and a chipped bone in his wrist in a fall on April 7.

Orb and Verrazano both totaled 150 points in the pre-Derby standings, based on performances in specified races. The Derby qualifiers had previously been decided by earning in graded-stakes races.

“It was a great post position. We got everything we wanted,” said trainer Todd Pletcher, who has five horses entered in the race, including Verrazano.

Goldcents, third in the points and co-owned by Louisville basketball Coach Rick Pitino, drew the No. 8 position. Goldencents is trained by Doug O’Neill, winner of last year’s Derby with I’ll Have Another. He will be ridden by Kevin Krigger, bidding to become the first African-American jockey to win the Derby since 1902.

The Philadelphia Eagles reportedly had been enamored with Lane Johnson for some time leading up to the draft. His athletic prowess — remember, he played quarterback and tight end in junior college — made him an ideal candidate for the wide-open, spread offense that Chip Kelly figures to bring to the NFL this year.

And after the Dolphins decided to nab Dion Jordan, not Johnson, after trading up for No. 3, the Eagles pounced.

This is the most speculative of the three offensive tackle picks so far, as Johnson has much less experience playing that position than either Eric Fisher or Luke Joeckel. But at 6-foot-6 and just north of 300 pounds (up a staggering 80 pounds from his JUCO days), Johnson has the physical gifts to be productive at the next level.

The Eagles’ offensive line was depleted by injuries last season. Johnson gives them another standout option up front, and one that will be able to get out in space and help Michael Vick, LeSean McCoy and the Eagles’ playmakers.

Grade: A-minus. Kelly will try to work his offense around the pieces he has, but adding even more athleticism to an already athletic group will make the transition that much easier.

April 25, 2013              6:30 a.m.

Jeff Bridges took home the lead actor Academy Award for his portrayal of down-and-not-entirely-out country singer Bad Blake in the film “Crazy Heart,” but that star turn on the big screen wasn’t entirely an act.

Bridges has been as passionate about music at least as long as he has been about acting, and he’s about to push that passion center stage as he heads out on a short tour with his country-rock band, the Abiders. The band plays this weekend’s Stagecoach Country Music Festival in Indio and headlines its own show Thursday at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles.

“After the success of ‘Crazy Heart,’ I thought, if I’m ever going to realize the teenage dream of having a band and going on the road and making records, now is the time,” Bridges, 63, said earlier this week.

Two major film projects and one album later, Bridges is now part of a three-day lineup at Stagecoach featuring Toby KeithLady Antebellum, the Zac Brown Band, Hank Williams Jr., Dwight Yoakam, Dierks Bentley, Darius Rucker and a couple dozen other acts.

Bridges plays on Friday — “We haven’t done many festivals,” he noted — and said he hoped while he’s on the festival grounds to be able to catch Norah Jones‘ set with her country side project, the Little Willies, as they are slated to follow Bridges’ performance at the Palomino Stage.

Leading into Stagecoach, Bridges and the Abiders have played nearly a dozen shows down the West Coast in the last couple of weeks, with many fans turning up more out of curiosity than from a working knowledge of Bridges’ musical history, which also includes his 2000 solo album, “Be Here Soon.”

“You get a little bit of that,” he said with a chuckle, “but music has been such a part of my life for so long, it doesn’t occur to me that way.”

Not that Bridges’ dominant career path as an actor will be any hurdle to his acceptance by the Stagecoach audience. Country fans historically relish seeing performers from other artistic arenas and in previous years have turned out in force for actors-turned-country (Kevin Costner with his band, Modern West), new-to-country rockers (Darius Rucker, Sheryl Crow) and even hip-hop stars (Kid Rock).

Bridges was introduced to rock ‘n’ roll originally by his big brother, actor Beau Bridges, who was fully plugged into the revolution going on in pop music when they were growing up in the 1950s.

“Kind of vicariously I lived the birth of rock ‘n’ roll through Beau, who was listening to Chuck Berry, the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly,” Bridges said. “He got one of those Danelectro guitars, and I picked one up at some point. I maybe inherited two kinds of artistic expression.”

The other, of course, being acting, which came to Beau and Jeff from their father, Lloyd Bridges, best known originally for his starring role in the 1950s TV series “Sea Hunt” but later in life as a comic actor in “Airplane!” and other films.

But there was a musical connection there too.

“Not many people know that my father was quite a singer,” Bridges said. “He replaced Richard Kiley on Broadway in ‘Man of La Mancha’ and did quite a few musicals — ‘Guys and Dolls’ — so we listened to a lot of that Broadway stuff growing up too.”

Bridges isn’t one to divorce himself from his identity as an actor while he puts music at the forefront, in part because he sees many parallels between the two.

“They’re more similar than they are different,” he said. “It’s almost like each [musical] performance is like you’re doing a big scene. You get that same kind of excitement from it — it’s a funny thing.”

Bridges also has the good fortune to have traveled in first-class musical circles. He’s been friends with musician and producer T Bone Burnett, who produced his 2011 solo album, “Jeff Bridges,” and was executive producer of “Crazy Heart.” They’ve known one another for more than three decades, going back to when they met on the set of Michael Cimino’s “Heaven’s Gate.”

Burnett is expected to drop in on Bridges’ El Rey show, as is Latin jazz musician Arturo Sandoval. So far on tour he’s been doing several of the cornerstone songs from “Crazy Heart,” including the Oscar-winning best song “The Weary Kind,” and songs from both his solo albums. He’s also incorporating touchstone songs from other films he’s done, among them Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Lookin’ Out My Back Door” from “The Big Lebowski,” and Tom Waits’ “Never Let Go” from 1992’s “American Heart.” Plus there are a few new songs he and the Abiders have worked up.

“It’s a bit surreal, doing this so late in life,” he said. “The truth is, I’ve been doing it all along; it’s just cresting now. I’m so glad the muscle hasn’t atrophied. It’s working well, I’m playing with my buddies, and we’re all out there having a good time.”

Marisa Tomei

April 18, 2013 @ 3:36 pm PST

Marc Lawrence’s as-yet untitled, New York-set romantic comedy starring Hugh Grant and Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei began principal photography yesterday, producer Martin Shafer announced. (Photo: Marisa Tomei.)

The plot is as follows (from the film’s press release):

In 1998, Keith Michaels (Hugh Grant) was on top of the world — a witty, sexy, Englishman in Hollywood who had just won a major screenwriter’s award. Fifteen years later, he’s creatively washed up, divorced, and broke.

With no other options, he takes a job teaching screenwriting at a small college in Binghamton, New York. Although the idea of teaching is less than thrilling, he hopes to make some easy money and enjoy the favors of impressionable young co-eds. What he doesn’t expect to find is romance with a single mom (Marisa Tomei) who’s gone back to school.

The Hugh Grant-Marisa Tomei movie is shooting in and around New York City, in addition to location work in Binghamton, New York. Besides Grant and Tomei, the film features Bella Heathcote, Chris Elliott, J.K. Simmons and Allison Janney. Shafer is producing with Liz Glotzer for Castle Rock Entertainment. FilmNation Entertainment is handling international sales for all territories outside the U.S.

Shafer, Glotzer and Castle Rock Entertainment recently produced Richard Linklater’s Bernie, starring Jack Black and Shirley MacLaineFriends with Benefits, with Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis; and Whit Stillman’s Damsels in Distress. Additionally, they executive produced Richard Linklater’s upcomingBefore Midnight, which reunites Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy in the third installment of the series that began with Before Sunrise.

Marisa Tomei movies

Marisa Tomei movies include Jonathan Lynn’s My Cousin Vinny, with Joe Pesci, and for which Tomei won a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award; Richard Attenborough’s Chaplin, starring a pre-Iron Man, pre-Sherlock Holmes Robert Downey Jr in the title role, and featuring Tomei as comedienne Mabel Normand; Ron Howard’s The Paper, with Michael Keaton, Robert Duvall, and Glenn Close; Michael Winterbottom’s Welcome to Sarajevo, with Stephen Dillane and Woody Harrelson; and Todd Field’s In the Bedroom, starring Sissy Spacek and Tom Wilkinson, and for which Tomei received her second Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination.

More recently, Marisa Tomei was featured in Glenn Ficarra and John Requa’sCrazy, Stupid, Love., with Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Steve Carell, andJulianne MooreGeorge Clooney’s The Ides of March, with Clooney and Gosling; and Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler, with Mickey Rourke and Evan Rachel Wood, and for which Tomei received her third Best Supporting Actress nod.

Representatives from 26 NFL teams gathered at San Jose State’s pro day on March 15, where 13 players (joined by additional prospects from small schools around the area) worked out outdoors on FieldTurf.

Ryan Otten, TE (6-foot-5 5/8, 241 pounds) — Otten — who was at the NFL Scouting Combine— ran the 40-yard dash in 4.76 and 4.69 seconds. He had a 33-inch vertical jump and a 9-foot-4 broad jump. He did the short shuttle in 4.62 seconds and the three-cone drill in 7.50 seconds. He also performed 17 lifts of 225 pounds on the bench press. Although Otten — out of respect for the teams — wouldn’t mention which NFL franchises he’s met individually with, he did say that three teams came to San Jose to work him out and he had visits with two other teams.

The bassist for rock band 3 Doors Down has been charged with vehicular homicide by intoxication after he was involved in a crash that killed another driver, Nashville police said on Saturday.

The musician, Todd Harrell, 41, of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, was driving his Cadillac CTS west on Interstate 40 at high speed late on Friday when he clipped a pickup truck, the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department said in a statement.

The truck went out of control, traveled down an embankment and overturned, police said.

Harrell was charged early on Saturday. Police identified the man killed in the crash as Paul Howard Shoulders Jr., 47.

3 Doors Down gained fame in 2000 with the song “Kryptonite.” The band’s other hit songs include “When I’m Gone” and “It’s Not My Time.”

The band’s website said in a statement that the members were “deeply saddened” by Shoulders’ death. “Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and friends at this difficult time,” they said.

Police said Shoulders was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the truck.

Harrell showed signs of impairment while performing field sobriety tasks and appeared under the influence of an intoxicant, police said.

“He acknowledged consuming hard cider and taking prescription Lortab and Xanax,” the police statement said.

An attorney for Harrell could not be reached for comment.

Harrell was taken to Nashville’s Metro Jail, which is run by the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office.

Harrell is also accused of bringing controlled substances into the jail. A search at the booking room by Davidson County Sheriff’s deputies uncovered a plastic bag hidden in his sock with eight Xanax pills, 24 Oxycodone pills and four Oxymorphone pills, police said.

Harrell remained in jail in lieu of $100,000 bond, according to jail records.

A judge says a key witness against the man convicted of murdering Washington intern Chandra Levy in 2001 could be discredited by new information.

Judge Gerald Fisher was speaking Thursday at the end of a hearing in the case, one of several recent hearings largely conducted out of earshot of the public and press. That pattern continued as government lawyers and lawyers for Ingmar Guandique spent about an hour and a half in private conversation.

Fisher says prosecutors provided him information in November that could be used to discredit the testimony former Guandique cellmate Armando Morales. Morales testified that Guandique confided he was responsible for Levy’s death.

The disappearance of the 24-year-old became international news after she was romantically linked with then-California Rep. Gary Condit.

Louisville players including Cortnee Walton (13) celebrate after a national semifinal against California at the Women’s Final Four of the NCAA college basketball tournament, Sunday, April 7, 2013, in New Orleans. Louisville won 64-57.

12:20 A.M.           APRIL 8, 2013

Louisville’s basketball teams have been pulling for each other during both NCAA tournaments, sweating through the nail biters, cheering the wins.

There hasn’t been a loss yet. It sure is a joyous time to be a Cardinal.

The women got a pep talk from men’s coach Rick Pitino after they lost to Notre Dame in the Big East tournament – and they haven’t lost since, beating Cal 64-57 on Sunday night to advance to the school’s second NCAA championship game.

The women’s players gathered at a New Orleans restaurant to watch the men beat Wichita State on Saturday and will be watching again Monday night when the men play Michigan for the title.

“The way I look at it, I think the men are trying to feed off of our success,” women’s coach Jeff Walz said with a smirk before adding on a serious note that he’d received word from Atlanta that the Louisville men “were in the hotel lobby, jumping up and down and cheering for us.”

Pitino texted Walz after their victory “congratulating us and telling me to tell the players what an unbelievable job they did.”

And so they have.

Connecticut women’s coach Geno Auriemma is well aware of what Louisville is going through right now.

Back in 2004, the men’s and women’s teams at UConn were playing for the national title and both came away victorious, the only time one school won both titles in the same season.

Now Louisville can do it again.

“If it were easy, it would have been done a lot of times, but the fact it’s only been done once shows you how difficult it is to do,” said Auriemma after his team routed Notre Dame 83-65 to reach the final. “At the same time, this has been a magical year for Louisville. … It’s just amazing what they’ve been able to do, so I think we’re playing against Louisville and we’re playing against a certain karma, maybe.”

Auriemma’s Huskies were finally able to shake off the Fighting Irish, thanks to an incredible effort by star freshman Breanna Stewart. She scored a career-high 29 points to go with four blocks and was seemingly everywhere.

“Given the stage, and what was at stake, I don’t know that I’ve seen any bigger performance,” said Auriemma. “I know there’s been NCAA tournament games that we’ve had certain individuals play great, but I don’t remember a player having a better game in this environment.”

UConn will be going for its eighth championship Tuesday night, which would match Tennessee for the most in the women’s college game.

April 7, 2013

In the end, it seemed less a victory than an exorcism.

A startling dominance that Notre Dame held over Connecticut crumbled Sunday night. Not even Tennessee at the height of its power could defeat the Huskies with such assured regularity.

After losing to the Fighting Irish in the past two national semifinal rounds,UConn prevailed on Sunday, 83-65, advancing to the N.C.A.A. title game against Louisville on Tuesday. The Huskies defeated the Cardinals, 72-58 during Big East conference play this season.

Notre Dame (35-2) had defeated UConn (34-4) in seven of their last eight meetings, including three times this year. But the Huskies are a more assured team now. Their freshmen, forwards Breanna Stewart and Morgan Tuck and guard Moriah Jefferson, have relaxed and matured, no longer seeming to be burdened by expectation.

The 6-foot-4 Stewart delivered a career-high 29 points on 10-of-16 shooting against Notre Dame, along with five rebounds and four blocked shots, hitting 3-pointers and runners and critical free throws. Tuck grabbed seven rebounds, and Jefferson did her part with Kelly Faris defensively to keep Skylar Diggins without a field goal in the first half and shooting a frigid 3 for 15 on the night.

After arriving at UConn as the national high school player of the year, Stewart had a brilliant opening to her college career, but then her confidence ebbed. She said she began thinking too much instead of playing freely, failing to score against Baylor, the defending national champion and shooting 1 for 7 in a defeat against Notre Dame.

But Stewart re-emerged in the N.C.A.A. tournament, and was named the most outstanding player in the Bridgeport Regional. Sunday, she played best game of her young career in the most important game of her career.

“She’s gotten stronger mentally, she’s gotten stronger emotionally,” Coach Geno Auriemma said of Stewart. “Stewie really takes things to heart and puts a lot of pressure on herself. When she wasn’t playing well, she wasn’t strong enough mentally and emotionally to put it aside.”

As the regular season ended, though, Stewart seemed to become liberated.

“There was a renewed, almost like, ‘I’m not going to settle for this anymore; I’m not going to allow myself to feel like this anymore,’ ” Auriemma said.

There have been many UConn players who have delivered big performances during the N.C.A.A. tournament, Auriemma noted, but added: “I don’t remember a player having a better game in this environment. Certainly, I’ve never had a freshman have a game like this in this environment.”

While Stewart and UConn advance to the championship game, Diggins will have the bittersweet commemoration of being an all-American, but one who did not win a national title despite three appearances in the Final Four.

Notre Dame shot only 22 for 74 over all on Sunday as if familiarity, nerves and the importance of the moment left the Irish unsettled. Guard Kayla McBride, who scored more than 20 points each of the three previous games this season against UConn, missed 15 of her 20 attempts Sunday. The Irish clanged 22 of their first 25 shots and never seemed comfortable.

“I thought we looked nervous coming out,” Notre Dame Coach Muffet McGraw said. “I don’t know why. We’ve been here before.”

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, UConn’s leading scorer on the season, who can curiously disappear for long stretches, imposed herself early and late on Sunday to finish with 16 points. UConn finally kept its poise against the Irish and successfully closed out a game after leading in the second half of all seven defeats to the Irish, dating to the 2011 national semifinals.

UConn also received some redemptive guard play from the junior Bria Hartley, who scored a career-high 29 points against Notre Dame as a freshman, but has been erratic and self-doubting much of this season. Sunday, Hartley began the game on the bench and committed six turnovers, but she also provided 15 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals and blistering speed in transition.

On Tuesday, Auriemma will seek his eighth national title, attempting to match the number won by Tennessee’s pioneering former coach Pat Summitt, whose career was cut short after last season by early-onset Alzheimer’s.

Despite its poor shooting Sunday, Notre Dame led by 26-25 late in the first half. But UConn made a 14-3 run to lead, 39-29, at intermission. Hartley hit a 3-pointer and a jumper to start the run, and Stewart contributed a 3-pointer. The Huskies took a lead they would not surrender.

In the second half, Stewart injured her right shoulder while running through a screen, and Notre Dame drew to within 61-55. But Faris grabbed two offensive rebounds and a missed free throw on the same possession, and Stewart returned to the game. Her swooping runner pulled UConn ahead by 64-55. A pair of free throws by Stewart ended the suspense at 68-55 with 4 minutes 8 seconds left.

“We just played so poorly,” McGraw said. “I thought Breanna Stewart was fantastic, unbelievable. It is real impressive to have a freshman have that type of game, to be the best player on the floor for Connecticut. You don’t expect a freshman to rise to the occasion like that. I thought it was a phenomenal performance.”

He only hoped, Auriemma said, that Stewart could summon one more performance at that level in the title game on Tuesday.

GOLDEN girl Carrie Bickmore is probably the only Gold Logie nominee who doesn’t want to take out the top gong at tonight’s awards.

The Project presenter, nominated for a Gold Logie for the second year in a row, says she is terrified of making an acceptance speech in front of Australia’s top TV talent.

“It’s one thing being on TV presenting to people in their homes, it’s very different being in a room full of other TV personalities and stars,” Bickmore says.

“Part of me didn’t want to win last year because I didn’t want to make a speech.”

She says she’s confident she won’t need to, predicting Hamish Blake or Andy Lee will take out the top award.

“I don’t think you ever take out an award when you’re in the same category as Hamish and Andy. I’m OK with that, I’m just enjoying the process,” she says.

Bickmore will swap the flats she wore last Logies, after cutting her foot and receiving 15 stitches, for a pair of killer heels and a Steven Khalil gown tonight.

“My biggest fear is falling over,” Bickmore says.

“There are so many cameras on you, you can’t be caught doing anything, because you know they’ll use the one of you pulling your knickers out of your bum or adjusting a bra strap.”

She’s guaranteed to please her biggest fan, five-year-old son Oliver.

“He’s gorgeous. Whenever I get dressed up he’ll say, ‘You look really pretty, Mum’.”

But a Gold Logie nomination doesn’t make juggling work and motherhood any easier.

Bickmore was hoping to take her mum tonight, but her babysitter fell through.

“Hopefully I’ll be able to take her, otherwise I’ll walk the red carpet with (co-stars) Hughesy and Charlie,” she said.

In the onslaught of Game of Thrones” Season 3 images and footage, some fans may have glimpsed a familiar face they couldn’t quite place.

That tall, blond, angel-faced young man is Thomas Brodie-Sangster — the adorable kid from “Love Actually“!

If you’ve seen the heartwarming romantic movie, he played Sam, Liam Neeson’s stepson, who crushes on a girl at school. At one point, Neeson questions a depressed Sam about what’s going on in his life, to which the boy answers, “The truth is, actually … I’m in love.”

A relieved and amused Neeson laughs. “I thought it would be something worse.”

Sam levels him with a stern gaze and replies, “Worse than the total agony of being in love?!” (Cue the “awwwwws”!)

In “Game of Thrones,” Brodie-Sangster joins the cast as Jojen Reed, who befriends Bran Stark as he flees from Winterfell. Jojen is a fellow greenseer — someone who can enter the mind of an animal and control its actions — and helps Bran develop the abilities he’s only begun to sense he may have.

Since “Love Actually,” Brodie-Sangster has appeared in movies including “Nanny McPhee” and “Nowhere Boy.” Young fans may recognize his voice as Ferb from the Disney Channel animated show “Phineas and Ferb.”

“Game of Thrones” airs Sundays at 9 PM on HBO.

Video of Rutgers men’s basketball coach Mike Rice verbally and physically abusing players aired Tuesday afternoon on ESPN’s Outside the Lines, footage that included Rice whipping a basketball at a player’s head, kicking a player and using a homophobic slur directed at a player.

Rice was suspended for three games in December and fined $50,000 after athletic department officials saw video footage of abuse. Eric Murdock, a former director of player development whose contract was not renewed, brought the footage and abuse to light. He also told ESPN that the abuse led to multiple players transferring to other schools.

“To witness that video and see your coach physically putting his hands on players, physically kicking players, firing balls at players at point-blank range, the verbal abuse, the belittling. Yeah, I was in total shock that this guy wasn’t fired,” Murdock said on ESPN.

Rutgers athletics director Tim Pernetti said he spent “hundreds of hours” talking to those involved in the program to determine what happened.

He said the punishment levied in December was appropriate because it was Rice’s “first offense.” Pernetti defended his decision to keep Rice as his basketball coach, and he did not give any indication Tuesday that he might reconsider that.

“Honestly, we’ve dealt with this issue,” Pernetti told local reporters on Tuesday after allowing them to watch the clips before ESPN aired the video. “When I became aware of this in November, within 24 hours we had the investigation underway. Now I became aware of it in a meeting. I took the DVD with me. I met with Mike later in the day. We started the investigation. Within that two-week period we made the determination on what we were going to do. I would tell you that all options were on the table at that time.

“Look, there’s going to be backlash anytime you deal with a situation like this. I think that Mike is in the most difficult position of anybody because he is the focal point of the story. But I don’t think we could’ve spent any more time investigating the matter than we did. What I did ask the investigators to do was the investigate but not make a recommendation on sanctions. I made that decision on my own. Once we had come to a conclusion I met with the investigators and asked them for input on the penalty. And they felt very much that it was in line with what was discovered over the course of the investigation.”

Pernetti said the practice incidents had occurred over a three-year period, featuring a lot of clips from Rice’s first season. Rutgers did not compile the video.

When Pernetti was asked why using a gay slur at a player and throwing basketballs at players wasn’t a fireable offense, Pernetti said: “I’ll just tell you this about certain words that were used, they’re unacceptable and if you use them once it’s once too many. At a place like Rutgers — one of the most diverse universities in the world, which we pride ourselves on, it’s absolutely unacceptable.”

March 31, 2013

When played to perfection, there’s nothing quite like Syracuse’s aggressive, half-court 2-3 zone defense.

It’s 40 minutes of trapping and shot-challenging, of closing off angles, of trusting teammates.

“We showed,” senior guard Brandan Triche said, “that defense wins games.”

Yes, the Orange D certainly does.

With a second suffocating performance at the East Regional, No. 4-seeded Syracuse shut down No. 3 Marquette 55-39 Saturday to earn coach Jim Boeheim his fourth trip to the Final Four — and first since a freshman named Carmelo Anthony helped win the 2003 NCAA championship.

“A tremendous, tremendous defensive effort,” Boeheim said.

Fittingly, a matchup between schools from the soon-to-break-apart, rough-and-tumble Big East became quite a struggle on the offensive end. Syracuse (30-9) was led by senior forward James Southerland’s 16 points. Michael Carter-Williams, a 6-foot-6 guard who is out front in the zone, was named the regional’s top player after accounting for 12 points, eight rebounds, six assists, five steals and only one turnover Saturday.

Marquette (26-9) hadn’t scored fewer than 47 points all season — and, indeed, put up 74 in a victory over Syracuse on Feb. 25. But this time, Marquette kept turning the ball over, seeing its shots blocked or just plain missing.

The Golden Eagles’ 39 points were a record low for a team in an NCAA tournament regional final since the shot clock was introduced in 1986.

“They beat us from start to finish. We collectively tried everything we knew to try,” Marquette coach Buzz Williams said. “It is the zone, and it is the players in the zone.”

Much like what happened Thursday in the regional semifinals, when Syracuse knocked off top-seeded Indiana by limiting it to a season-low output, too.

“I don’t think we’ve played as good defensively as these last two games,” Triche said. “We held some good teams down.”

All told, Marquette made only 12 of 53 shots — 23 percent — and was 3 for 24 on 3-pointers. Vander Blue, who carried Marquette to the round of eight, was held to 14 points on 3-for-15 shooting.

“They cover ground really good. You’ve got to get the ball in the middle, you’ve got to play inside out, you’ve got to get to the free-throw line and wear them down with the 3-pointer when you can,” Blue said. “They’re really good at what they do in that zone.”

Consider these numbers through four games in the tournament: Syracuse is averaging 6.5 blocks and 10.8 steals, while forcing opponents into 29 percent shooting, including 15 percent on 3-pointers.

“We couldn’t get one to drop in from up close,” said Marquette’s Jamil Wilson, who was 0 for 5 on 3-pointers, 1 for 9 overall. “We couldn’t get one to drop in from outside.”

The next team to try to solve that defense will be the winner of Sunday’s South Regional final between Florida and Michigan. Syracuse is 3-0 in national semifinal games under Boeheim.

And to think: Exactly three weeks ago, in this very same building, Syracuse wrapped up its final Big East regular-season schedule before heading to the Atlantic Coast Conference with a bad-as-can-be performance in a lopsided loss to Georgetown. Syracuse’s 39 points that day were the Orange’s tiniest total in a half-century.

That was Syracuse’s fourth loss in a span of five games, a stumbling way to head into tournament play.

Since becoming a mother in September 2011, “Bones” star Emily Deschanel has been diligent about finding the safest baby products for her son, Henry. “I am always on EWG’s [Environmental Working Group] Skin Deep website looking up products to use on Henry. It rates them so you know how toxic something is,” she says. “I love Earth Mama Angel Baby. Their products are safe, smell amazing and actually work! I was already using natural products in my home and on my body, but having a child made me even more concerned about everything. The more you read about the chemicals that are legally allowed in our homes, the more upsetting it can be. The extra effort that it takes is completely worth it, as is using cloth diapers instead of disposables, which we do with Henry. Sometimes the clean up is a pain, but I feel better not contributing to the landfills as most diapers do.”
Deschanel is a long-time vegan and is feeding her son a meatless diet. “We are raising Henry vegetarian; he will be mostly vegan and always have a choice in the matter, but we will educate him about why we make the choices we do with our food. My husband isn’t one hundred percent vegan. I read ‘Disease-Proof Your Child’ by Dr. Fuhrman, and think it is a must-read for parents trying to raise a healthy child,” she adds.
Deschanel’s pregnancy forced the “Bones” writers to change gears and make her character, Temperance “Bones” Brennan, pregnant as well. “They didn’t think they could hide it,” she says, noting that she feared it would negatively impact the show, but she needn’t have worried. Motherhood has broadened the story possibilities for Brannan and her relationship with Booth (David Boreanaz), and she now feels the pregnancy “affected the show in a positive way.” Since baby Christine’s birth, Bones and Booth are “trying to figure out how to raise a child together and balance that with work. They went from no relationship whatsoever besides platonic — except for their feelings — to a family essentially, living together, raising a child together and working together,” she notes, adding that although they still bicker, “They’ve come to care for each other deeply.”
“Bones” won an Environmental Media Award in 2010 for a storyline involving the mistreatment of animals, and the Monday night Fox show has tackled other topical issues, from the exotic animal trade to date rape, veterans’ issues and 9/11. “I always push for the animal and environmental issues being highlighted and when it is appropriate it finds its way into the show,” says Deschanel.
She would like to direct a “Bones” episode, but “I would just have to wait until my son was big enough that I didn’t feel like I had to be with him as much. Right now, I take him with me every day. I see him during my breaks. I’m still practicing as much attachment parenting as possible. I want to put my child first. But it is a goal for me, possibly next season or if we have a tenth season, or maybe both,” she muses. “We’ll see.”

Each letter of the first and middle names rules 9 years of life.  Ages 27 to 54 are ruled by the sum of the day of birth and the fourth, fifth, and sixth letters of the name.

October 11th, 1976             Emily Erin Deschanel

11 (born on the 11th of the month) + 12 (l is the 12th letter of the alphabet) + 25 (y is the 25th letter of the alphabet) + 5 (E is the 5th letter of the alphabet) = 53

The La Salle Explorers took advantage of their Kansas City karma and reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

Guard Tyrone Garland’s basket on a drive through the lane with 2.5 seconds left gave the 13th-seeded Explorers a 76-74 victory over No. 12 Mississippi on Sunday night at the Sprint Center.

The Explorers, who have won three NCAA Tournament games in five nights in two time zones, advanced to the Sweet 16, where they will face No. 9 Wichita State on Thursday in Los Angeles.

It’s the farthest La Salle has advanced since 1955 when LaSalle, as defending NCAA champion, reached the title game of a 24-team tournament and lost to Bill Russell’s University of San Francisco team.

Ramon Galloway led the Explorers, 24-9, with 24 points and Garland scored 21.

Marshall Henderson led Ole Miss, 27-9, with 21 points.

Reginald Buckner’s put-back gave the Rebels a 73-72 lead with 2:43, but he missed the free throw that followed — the Rebels’ 10th miss in 19 attempts. LaDarius White then made one of two free throws, making it 74-72 with 1:58 to play.

La Salle’s Tyreek Duren tied it 74-74 by making both ends of a one-and-one with 1:07 to play. White missed the basket with a jumper with 44 seconds to play, but in the ensuing scramble, the Rebels were awarded the ball out of bounds with 12 seconds left on the shot clock.

But Henderson was unable to get off a shot in time, and La Salle took over on the shot-clock violation with 32 seconds to play.

Ole Miss point guard Jarvis Summers gave the Rebels a 71-69 with a basket with 3:25 to play in the game, but Duren answered with a three-point shot for a 72-71 lead.

La Salle tied the game at 69-69 on a five-point possession. Sam Mills made a three-pointer and was fouled with 4:01 to play. He missed the free throw, but Jerrell Wright grabbed the rebound and scored on the put-back.

Henderson gave the Rebels a 65-62 lead with a traditional three-point play when he was fouled making a jump shot and converted the free throw with 6:39 to play.

Duren answered with a basket, and the Explorers had a chance to take the lead but Ole Miss’ Reginald Buckner blocked the shot, and the Rebels’ Nick Williams scored at the other end for a 67-64 lead with 4:57 to play.

Ole Miss trailed 55-52 when forward Murphy Holloway put together a four-point play with 10:44 left to play. Holloway scored an inside basket and was fouled. He missed the free throw but gathered the rebound in the lane and scored for a 56-55 lead.

After an Explorers’ turnover, Henderson drained a three-point shot, extending the lead to 59-55 with 9:49 to play.

La Salle led 40-38 at halftime as Galloway made five of eight three-point attempts and had 19 points, while Henderson got off to a slow start for the second straight game. Henderson made just three of nine from beyond the arc in the first half, and had 11 points.

When Wichita State emerged from the under-eight-minute timeout Saturday against Gonzaga with its starting five on the floor, it was clear the NCAA Tournament third-round game would be mostly decided with the Shockers’ best players in the game.

WSU only had the chance to determine the outcome with its best five because several of its reserves helped keep it close when foul trouble and ineffectiveness damaged the Shockers late in the first half and early in the second.

The starters mostly won it, with help from a sub — Fred Van Vleet beat the shot clock for a three-pointer with 1:26 to go. That put the Shockers ahead by five, and they pulled a 76-70 upset over the top-ranked and No. 1-seeded Bulldogs.

Van Vleet, who played 20 minutes off the bench, also made four free throws down the stretch.

The Shockers saw their one-time 13-point lead over Gonzaga shrink to five at halftime, and the Bulldogs led by as many as eight in the second half. Gonzaga took advantage of a beleaguered WSU lineup, with Carl Hall and Cleanthony Early on the bench with three fouls.

Hall and Early were useful defending Gonzaga star center Kelly Olynyk, but when WSU couldn’t put both of them on the floor together, Olynyk scored 10 points during an eight-minute stretch in the second half.

Without two of their best scorers and best defensive options against Gonzaga big men Olynyk and Elias Harris, the Shockers held it together with its bench players, never allowing Gonzaga’s lead to stretch to double digits.

WSU ended the first half with two starters on the court — Malcolm Armstead and Ron Baker — along with Van Vleet, Chadrack Lufile and Jake White. The Shockers needed important but limited minutes from Lufile and White, the reserve post players, to defend Harris and Olynyk and to hold their own on offense.

White did just that, making a three-pointer with five minutes to go in the first half to put the Shockers ahead by 10 and tipping in a basket at the first-half buzzer that made it 36-31. That basket became more important in the second half, when it appeared Gonzaga would be primed to pull away.

Early was WSU’s best reserve, even though foul trouble kept him from dominant stretches like the ones he enjoyed in Thursday’s second-round win over Pittsburgh. Early finished with 16 points, but some of his fellow subs made an equal impact just through their maintenance efforts in the second half.

Van Vleet scored 13 points, three behind Early and a one-time substitute for the team lead.

Ron Baker had been coming off the bench since his return from injury two weeks ago, but he has started the two NCAA Tournament games and made a major difference Thursday with 16 points, including a personal 5-0 run that turned a one-point deficit into a 67-63 lead with 2:52 to play.

Baker was pressed into extended duty because the Shocker bench essentially has become shorter. Demetric Williams, a senior and usual starter, has been hampered by a knee injury and has played 21 total minutes in WSU’s two tourney games.

Scratch No. 1 Gonzaga out of your bracket and replace it with the Shockers.

It was a real shocker, all right.

Ninth-seeded Wichita State hit the bull’s eye when it came to knocking out the top-seeded Bulldogs, scoring a thrilling 76-70 victory in front of a crowd of 16,060 at EnergySolutions Arena.

The win sends Wichita State to next week’s West Regional semifinals at Staples Center. The Shockers will face the winner of Sunday’s game between Mississippi and La Salle.

“This feeling is unimaginable,” said freshman guard Ron Baker, one of Wichita State’s heroes.

Baker scored 16 points, making four of his team’s 14 three-pointers, and deflated Gonzaga with big shots in the final minutes.

The first game in Salt Lake wasn’t nearly as dramatic, as No. 6 Arizona routed No. 14 Harvard, 74-51.

The Wildcats earned the second of four tickets to Los Angeles and will meet Ohio State or Iowa State.

Gonzaga (32-3) returns home to Spokane after a bitter defeat, ending a season many thought could have brought the Bulldogs their first  national title.

It was only their third defeat but, man, was it wrenching.

“A tough, tough way to end a fabulous season,” Gonzaga Coach Mark Few said.

Forward Elias Harris said, “I don’t even know what’s going through my head right now. . . .I’ll was a heck of a year. It’s just over now and it’s sad. It hurts.”

Wichita State (28-8) had not played a No. 1 team since it was routed by 34 points at UCLA in December 1967.

This game was a lot closer.

Gonzaga thought it was on its way to L.A. after overcoming a 13-point deficit to take a seven-point lead with 5:30 left on a three-point basket by Kevin Pangos.

The Bulldogs’ lead then painfully evaporated.

The worst sequence came at the three-minute mark after Baker’s two free throws put Wichita State up, 64-63.

Gonzaga guard David Stockton, playing in the same city where his dad John starred for years with the Utah Jazz, and Harris mis-communicated on an inbounds pass, resulting in a turnover.

The mistake might have been overcome had Baker not immediately drilled a baseline three-pointer to put the Shockers up by four.

Gonzaga tried to scramble back but could never recover.

No one-and-done for Temple on this day. Their best player pulled it off with six clinching free throws that were oh-so-painful but still perfect.

Khalif Wyatt scored 31 points, finishing the game with an injured left thumb that had him grimacing before his decisive free throws, and Temple broke with its trend of opening game losses in the NCAA tournament on Friday, beating North Carolina State 76-72 in the second round of the East Regional.

The ninth-seeded Owls (24-9) will face winner of the Indiana-LIU Brooklyn game on Sunday, which represents a breakthrough for Temple right there.

The Owls are trying to shed its reputation as an easy-out team. They’d made the tournament each of the last five years, losing their opening game all but once. They haven’t been to the round of 16 since 2001, when they reached the Elite Eight.

Temple opened a 17-point lead before Wyatt – the Atlantic 10’s player of the year and top scorer – hurt his left thumb and left the game briefly, returning with black tape on the non-shooting hand. It clearly bothered him every time he tried to grip the ball.

Every shot was an adventure, but he made enough – including 6 of 6 from the line in the final 32 seconds – to keep Temple around for more than one game. He hit his last two with 2.2 seconds to go.

How bad was the thumb?

“It’s sore,” he said, deciding that didn’t fully describe the pain. “It’s sore. It’s sore.”

No. 8 NC State (24-11) trailed most of the game, but cut it to 74-72 on Lorenzo Brown’s jumper with 2 seconds left. Wyatt was fouled on the inbounds play and finished it off.

The Wolfpack went to the round of 16 last season and yearned for a deep tournament run in a year dedicated to its most famous finish. Richard Howell had 14 points and 15 rebounds for NC State, which couldn’t fully take advantage of its advantage up-front.

The Wolfpack is commemorating the 30-year anniversary of its national title under coach Jim Valvano, the one with the wild ending. Lorenzo Charles grabbed Dereck Whittenburg’s off-target shot and slammed it home at the buzzer for a 54-52 win over Houston, sending Valvano on his joyous ramble around the court.

Wyatt cut off any hopes of a last-second win for NC State this time.

Both sides knew it could come down to an inside job.

The Owls were overshadowed on the front line, where N.C. State had the 6-foot-8 Howell, the ACC’s leading rebounder. Temple’s top inside threat – leading rebounder Anthony Lee – was limited in practice this week after getting tested for a concussion following the Atlantic 10 tournament.

Lee was replaced in the starting lineup Friday by 6-foot-9 Jake O’Brien, making his seventh start. O’Brien, who likes to shoot the three, played the leading role in Temple’s fast start. He finished with 18 points.

Still, the onus was on the 6-foot-4 Wyatt, the A-10’s leading scorer at 19.8 points per game. Wyatt had three driving baskets – two of them off steals – and O’Brien hit a 3 for a 33-18 lead with 6:38 left in the half.

Lee got into the game briefly and scored a basket, but O’Brien was the Owls’ main guy up-front. He hit yet another three with 18 seconds left for a 38-22 lead at halftime, giving him a game-high 13 points. C.J. Leslie and the rest of the Wolfpack walked off the court stunned, the shock showing in their listless stride and blank faces.

Wyatt has a knack for wriggling free in the lane and drawing fouls, but his long-range shot has been off. He missed 12 straights shots during a loss to Massachusetts during the A-10 tournament, and was only 4 of 23 behind the arc in his last three games.

Wyatt still struggled with his outside shot – only 1 of 7 behind the arc – but compensated by driving inside for baskets over taller defenders. He went 12 of 14 from the foul line.

After Wyatt hurt his hand in the second half, N.C. State started its best spurt of the game, getting the ball inside four times for baskets – two each by Howell and Brown – that cut it to 47-39 with 13:08 to go.

Wyatt grabbed his left thumb occasionally and was off on his shot, but the Owls managed to keep their distance until the closing minutes. Scott Wood, the ACC’s top three-point shooter, missed his first four shots, but hit back-to-back threes that cut it to 63-60 with 3:08 left.

He missed another three with 1:11 to go, and Wyatt finished it off with those free throws.

Friday March 22nd, 2013

The U.S. national soccer team’s road to the 2014 World Cup will pass through several distinctive locations, but none as surreal and farcical as the snow-blasted setting in suburban Denver on Friday night.

Fourteen months from now, if the Americans are avoiding sunburn in Brazil, they will surely look back at a March blizzard that turned DSG Park into Aspen. In swirling snow, difficult footing and poor visibility, Clint Dempsey drove a yellow ball into the net in the 16th minute for a 1-0 victory over Costa Rica.

undefined
A qualifying match that began in inconvenient — and quite pretty — conditions crumbled into an extraordinary scene.

Soccer games are rarely stopped or postponed but the snow continued to fall. And in the 55th minute, Salvadoran referee Joel Aguilar halted the action. During a brief interruption, however, players on both teams seemed to persuade him to resume play.

With more snow expected Saturday, Aguilar and the match commissioner, who is from the Caribbean island of Grenada, set out to finish the match in its entirety. At one point, U.S. defender Geoff Cameron placed his hand on the back of a grounds crew member armed with a shovel and guided him along a line marking.

“It was an embarrassment for soccer tonight,” Costa Rica Coach Jorge Luis Pinto said.

The Americans (1-1-0, three points) survived several scares in the second of their 10 final-round regional qualifiers to move into second place behind Honduras (1-0-1, four) in the six-nation standings.

They extended their home unbeaten streak in World Cup qualifiers to 23 games (21-0-2) dating from 2001, and gained valuable points after losing the opener at Honduras last month and enduring weeks of injuries and off-field distractions.

“It was a nice snow battle — the most important part is you get the three points,” U.S. Coach Juergen Klinsmann said.

The settings for the U.S. team’s first four qualifiers: sweltering heat in Honduras’ lowlands, freezing weather in Colorado’s high plains, oxygen deprivation in Mexico City next Tuesday and summer sizzle in Jamaica in June.

For many countries, venue selection is strategic in providing a clear advantage. In the U.S. Soccer Federation’s case, both climate and demographics in a diverse country come into play. The Mexico home match in September, for instance, will be held in Columbus, Ohio — a location that has hosted the Mexicans in the dead of winter.

Denver, the Mile High City, was also selected for altitude ahead of the trip to Mexico City (7,350 feet).

Spring welcomed the U.S. team early in the week, but conditions turned badly late Friday afternoon with strong winds and bursts of sideways snow.

Costa Rica is a tropical country but eight starters are employed by northern European or MLS clubs. So the weather advantage wasn’t as pronounced as one would expect.

Maintenance crews shoveled and mini-plows ran laps. The surface was marginally playable at the start and only got worse. During stoppages, the shovel brigade scurried out to re-expose the sidelines.

The breakthrough came in the 16th minute when Jozy Altidore ripped a low shot from beyond the penalty area. His target was the near corner, but as goalkeeper Keilor Navas slid over, the ball caromed off defender Roy Miller’s leg and spun into Dempsey’s path in the middle of the box for a simple finish – his 32nd goal in 93 appearances.

It continued a miserable month for Miller, who was recently benched by the New York Red Bulls after intentionally encroaching on a San Jose penalty kick. He said afterward he thought, incorrectly, such a violation would negate a possible goal. The shot was saved, but Miller’s actions led to a retake, which was converted.

The Americans had a case for a penalty kick in the 42nd minute when Dempsey was tripped, but Aguilar, positioned a few yards away, allowed play to continue.

When the half ended, the grounds crew rushed back to work, bringing only temporary relief. Aguilar had the power to stop the match but declined to intervene.

Costa Rica threatened several times in the second half, most notably in the 70th minute when an offside call wiped out an apparent goal.

When it ended, the Americans thanked the fans and played in the snow.

When Jake Davidson posted a video on YouTube asking Kate Upton to the prom, he never thought he would actually get a response. That all changed on Wednesday morning when the 17-year-old Los Angeles teenager got to chat with the Sports Illustrated swimsuit cover model via “TODAY.”

Davidson was chatting with the show’s hosts, Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb (who was making an earlier appearance on “TODAY” than her usual 10 a.m. slot), when Guthrie announced that she had been on the “Dial-a-thon” all morning and had Upton on the phone.

The calm and collected persona that Davidson had presented earlier in the segment (which took place around 7:30 a.m. EST, 4:30 PST) dissipated, and he struggled to get the word “hi” out to greet Upton.

Upton: Jake how do you feel? I can’t believe you’re on a show and everything now! This is so amazing.Davidson: This just got so much better now that you’re on the phone.

Upton: I really love the video. it was so hilarious and so creative. Thank you so much for doing that, i really appreciate it.

Kotb: Jake make your pitch

Davidson: Kate, I’m telling you it could be a great night, a great evening. I could even get the curfew extended from my parents maybe. We could go to a great dinner before, I hope you’d be interested, if your schedule’s free. And what time can I pick you up if you’re interested?

Upton: Well I’d definitely have to just check my schedule and if everything works out, I’d love to go with you. I know we’d have a blast.

The day before he spoke directly to Upton, she replied to his request on Twitter:

@JakeDavidson23http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvxqUEMDBp8 …” you can call me Katie if you want! How could I turn down that video! I’ll check my schedule 😉

Why did Davidson choose Upton for his prophetic pitch?

“Well besides the obvious, she’s obviously very pretty,” he said. “Sports Illustrated I read it, like I said. She was great on the cover the past couple of years. She likes sports…I like sports. ”

Still no word on whether or not Upton has cleared up her schedule. “Entertainment Tonight” caught up with her later in the day, and Upton was still waiting to check her schedule.

During the interview with the celebrity-based show, Upton said she leaves the scheduling to her manager. She also added that she’s very busy. Think that was a cop-out? We’re crossing our fingers for Davidson! Who doesn’t like a Cinderella story?

New Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang gestures as he attends his first press conference after the closing session of the National People's Congress at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Sunday.

March 17, 2013                3:17 am

Does China have a growing image problem in the world?

Some say yes, pointing to fears that China may threaten global peace as it spars with neighbors over contested territories or as an alleged source of large-scale cyberattacks on other nations. Another big issue: fear of environmental disaster as its large population and high-speed economic growth pollute at a pace that has, arguably, already overwhelmed the ecological balance at home and may damage the global environmental balance, too.

Li Keqiang, the country’s new prime minister, appeared to address these fears on Sunday at his first news conference since being appointed head of the government two days ago. Fittingly, if unfortunately, it was a severely polluted day, with smog carpeting the capital.

In Beijing’s Great Hall of the People, time was up at the end of the 107-minute news conference in which he spoke about a range of issues including the need to deepen reform, the economy and urbanization.

The moderator had called an end to questions. (The New York Times wasn’t invited to attend, so I watched on state TV, which broadcast the whole event.) Many overseas reporters hadn’t had a chance to ask a question, Mr. Li noted, adding, “I’d like to say a few more sentences.”

“Recently I’ve been looking a lot at reports on issues to do with China, of course most have been on the issues that international public opinion is paying attention to,” he said.

There were basically two: “One is worries whether China’s economy can develop sustainably,” he said, in a nod to environmental concerns.

“And another one is worries whether China’s development will rely on force and hegemony,” in a nod to concerns China is becoming increasingly aggressive.

“I think that both these problems can be dispelled,” he said (here I am translating from a Chinese transcript of his remarks).

“China has the conditions to preserve sustainable and healthy development and to continue to promote social progress,” said Mr. Li, a lively speaker who gestures with his hands when he talks and connects well with his audience, less stiff than other senior leaders.

“China has 1.3 billion people. To realize modernization we still have a very long road to walk. We need a lasting environment of international peace,” he said.

“Even if China develops to being formidable, we will not pursue hegemony,” he promised, using political jargon to mean tyrannical or bullying, “because we have been deeply affected by agonizing experiences in China’s recent and contemporary history. Do not impose on others what we do not desire ourselves. Do not do to others. This is an article of faith for Chinese people.”

But the special address to overseas journalists and, apparently, the world at large, contained a warning, too.

“Here I want to emphasize, walking the path of peaceful development is China’s firm and unshakable decision,” he said. “Protecting national sovereignty and territorial integrity is also China’s unwavering determination. These two principles are not mutually exclusive, and are in line with protecting regional stability and principles of peace and order.”

Then, smiling broadly, he rose. His first news conference as prime minister was over.

Early signs are Mr. Li may prove a popular figure. He studied both law and the economy, is viewed as having risen on talent, not family connections, and as being pro-reform. Here are two representative comments from Sina Weibo, the country’s largest microblog:

“Li Keqiang doesn’t have an outstanding birth background but he was promoted by his ability. In a country like China, Li Keqiang’s promotion can be considered progress,” said a person with the name Pang Zai.

“Li Keqiang is very strong in both academics and politics. We need this kind of talent,” said Fengkuang Akira.

It’s more than that.

Don’t say what happens this evening at American Airlines Arena won’t mean anything if these teams meet again in the playoffs.

The best two teams in the Eastern Conference.

One is on a 17-game winning streak.

The other is the last team to beat it 38 days ago, and holds a 2-0 lead in the season series.

Something has to give.

The Indiana Pacers, who feel under-appreciated, against the Miami Heat, the team with all the flashiness and the best player walking this planet.

“I’m real excited for this game,” Pacers swingman Paul George said. “It should be a fun one. It’ll be like Christmas Eve; I won’t be able to sleep. I’m really up for this one.”

South Beach has been the center of the NBA since LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh decided to join forces almost three years ago.

The Pacers have played with a chip on their shoulder since James and Wade took the series from them last spring with performances that had everybody (except Pacers fans) wanting more.

“(We came into the season with the mindset of proving) we can beat them because of how that playoff series ended,” Pacers power forward David West said.

None

To say these teams don’t care for each would be an understatement.

There has been lots of trash talk. Hard fouls. Flagrant fouls. Even a suspension during their playoff series last season.

“They’re as chippy as any team in the NBA,” Heat forward Shane Battier said. “There always are a couple of extracurriculars in there. We don’t back down from anybody.”

How the Pacers play against the Heat can be looked at as a sign of respect despite the teams not caring for each other.

“You can’t be the one that lets them hit you first,” Pacers point guard George Hill said. “You have to play with an edge and chippiness because they’re the best team in the NBA for a reason. They’re the world champs. You go into the game respecting that and knowing you have to bring your best, and that’s what we do.”

The Pacers were supposed to be long shots against the Heat in their first two meetings because they were without Danny Granger (knee), their leading scorer for the past five seasons.

They instead relished the challenge, grabbed hold of it and dictated how the games would be played.

George used Granger’s absence in his favor, outplaying James in the first meeting and playing him evenly in the second game.

West has bullied Miami’s marginal frontcourt players to average 22 points in the two games. Roy Hibbert has done a good job anchoring the paint on defense. The Pacers have outrebounded the Heat by an average of 17 a game in the two meetings.

James referred to the Pacers’ style of play as “smash-mouth,” something that should put a smile on coach Frank Vogel’s face.

The Pacers not only won both games, they won them by double digits.

“Whatever team has beaten us, especially since the break, we’ve tried to redeem ourselves and play a lot better,” Wade said. “Obviously, the first game, they smacked us pretty good. The second time, we had a chance, but they did more than us to win the game. So now, it’s our turn, being at home, to come out and take care of business.”

While the results of the athletic drills conducted at the Combine each year generates the most buzz, scouts will tell you that the most important testing occurs off the field.

An example of this came Thursday morning with scouts getting their first opportunity to get reliable measurements for a number of highly regarded underclassmen tight ends, including Stanford’s Zach Ertz,

While Ertz looked the part of a first round tight end at 6-5, 249 pounds, he has surprisingly short arms, according to NFL.com’s Daniel Jeremiah.

Ertz’s arms were measured at 31 3/4.” By comparison, Notre Dame’s Tyler Eifert, the only other tight end consistently earning placement in NFLDraftScout.com’s first round mock drafts, measured in at 6-5, 250 with 33 1/8″ arms.

The difference might seem slight, until you compare Ertz’s arm-length to several of the other highly regarded underclassmen at the position, including San Diego State’s Gavin Escobar (33 5/8″ arms at 6-6, 254), Michigan State’s Dion Sims (33 1/8″ at 6-5, 262) and even significantly smaller “joker” tight end Jordan Reed of Florida, who has 33″ arms despite measuring in at 6-2 (1/2), 236 pounds.

Arm length can be significant at the tight end position. Longer-armed defenders might be able to get into Ertz’s chest and drive him back or toss him on when he’s asked to block. Theoretically, defenders playing tight against him might be able to reach from behind to knock away passes, though this wasn’t a problem during Ertz’s First Team All Pac-12 junior campaign, when he led Stanford with 69 catches in 2012 for 898 yards and six touchdowns.

DeAndre Hopkins may have solidified himself as a first-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft during Clemson Pro Day on Thursday. Unofficially, he clocked in at 4.5 and a 4.41 in his two attempts at the 40-yard dash, which is a considerable improvement over the 4.57 he ran at the 2013 NFL Combine.

Hopkins is projected to go No. 12 overall to the Miami Dolphins, according to SB Nation’s latest mock draft, due to his combination of size, body control and impeccable hands. Speed wasn’t considered a particular strength until Hopkins proved Thursday that he has some jets. Unsurprisingly, he also performed well in position drills.

Pauline was also impressed with defensive lineman Malliciah Goodman during drills. He didn’t participate in the bench press after putting up 26 reps of 225 pounds in Indianapolis. Goodman ran the 40, however, and unofficially posted a blistering time of 4.52 seconds. If that time is accurate, he could be making a big move up draft boards. Goodman wasn’t exceptionally productive in college, but an NFL team may be willing to take a chance on his raw potential.

Jaron Brown reportedly ran the fastest 40 time of the day, clocking in at 4.29 seconds. He wasn’t targeted often last season next to Hopkins, but his speed and 6’2 height make him an intriguing prospect.

The Tigers’ third combine participant, running back Andre Ellington, did not take part in Thursday’s Pro Day, and will instead hold his own separate workout on March 29.

Skylar Diggins scored 29 points and sparked a decisive run in the third overtime as No. 2 Notre Dame beat third-ranked Connecticut, 96-87, on Monday night to win the Big East regular-season title outright for the second straight year.

The Fighting Irish (28-1, 16-0) were undefeated in the conference for the first time since joining in 1995-96 and became the first team to win six of seven games against Connecticut (27-3, 14-2) in more than two decades. Two of those victories clinched league titles and two more were in N.C.A.A. semifinal games. The only loss was in the final of the league tournament last season.

Diggins added 11 rebounds. Kayla McBride scored 26 points before fouling out.

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis led UConn with 26 points and Kelly Faris added 21. Stefanie Dolson added 12 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out in the final minute and Bria Hartley, who fouled out seconds later, finished with 10.

The Irish managed to win despite shooting 1 of 12 from 3-point range and being outshot over all 46 percent to 39 percent, but they forced 35 turnovers.

The Huskies had chances to put the game away in the first two overtimes but could not do it. Morgan Tuck missed a free throw late in the first overtime that could have given the Huskies a 4-point lead. McBride then hit Notre Dame’s only 3-pointer with 8 seconds left to tie the score at 71-71 and force the second overtime.

Supermodel and television host Heidi Klum said on Monday that she will be a new judge on the popular summer TV talent show “American’s Got Talent.”

Klum will be the fourth judge on the talent show created by British entertainment mogul Simon Cowell. She joins comedian Howie Mandel, radio “shock jock” Howard Stern and former Spice Girl Mel B on the show hosted by Nick Cannon.

“Excited 2 join @HowardStern @howiemandel @OfficialMelB & @NickCannon on @nbcagt as new judge! Will be so fun,” Klum tweeted.

Broadcaster NBC said Klum, 39, adds a discerning taste to the jury panel.

“As we look to develop an act that will get the world’s attention, we and the contestants will benefit from Heidi’s international sensibility and understanding of what works in today’s global entertainment industry,” NBC president of alternative programming, Paul Telegdy, said in a statement.

NBC said last month that Mel B would replace Sharon Osbourne, who quit the show after her son Jack was dropped from another reality show by the network.

German-born Klum was due to join the other judges for the nationwide auditions set to start on Monday in New Orleans. The show is open to singers, dancer, magicians and other performers with a top prize of $1 million.

NBC is betting that Klum and Mel B will boost falling audiences for the summer show, which experienced record low numbers during the finale in September with less than 11 million viewers.

Klum is also the host on Bravo’s fashion-design competition “Project Runway” as well as model competition “Germany’s Next Top Model” in her native country.

It’s funny to hear Trevor Bayne utter the word jerk, let alone use it to describe himself. Unfailingly polite and devoid of bitterness, Bayne often is a beacon of good cheer.

Still, he admits he might not have come across as virtuous one December day last year when snowboarding with his girlfriend Ashton Clapp near Asheville, N.C. Toward the end of their fun afternoon, they were at the top of the mountain when he took off downhill, leaving her behind.

“Her shoulder was hurting, so I was probably seeming like a jerk at the time,” Bayne said.

But there was a plan.

Bayne went about halfway down the hill and waited. Ashton soon arrived, falling near him. When she stood, Bayne proposed. They’ll have a June wedding between race weekends at Dover and Iowa. The honeymoon will wait until after the NASCAR season.

Bayne knew if he’d taken Ashton to a more traditional place to propose she would have suspected his plan, ruining the surprise. That’s why he proposed on their snowboard trip. His planning, though, nearly backfired.

“I will honestly say the night before she was crying,” Bayne said. “She did not know it was coming. She was asking if I still had those intentions because we hadn’t talked about it in so long.”

Bayne hadn’t discussed marriage because he had been waiting on the engagement ring. He did not realize it would take about a month to arrive. There was nothing he could do but wait.

Patience has become a pillar for Bayne. In a profession where performance is measured in thousandths of a second, Bayne has had to view his racing career in increments of weeks and months.

Until now.

He’s back racing in a series full time and can display the talent many first saw during his shocking Daytona 500 win two years ago. He’ll run a full Nationwide schedule for Roush Fenway Racing — the first time he’s run a full season in any series since 2010 — and again race a partial Sprint Cup schedule with the Wood Brothers. He got off to a fast start Sunday, posting the third fastest time in Daytona 500 qualifying, giving him a front-row starting spot for his qualifying race Thursday.

All that he’s entailed the past two seasons brings to mind something Bayne said on his team’s radio moments after winning the Daytona 500: “Are you kidding me?”

He was scheduled to run the full Nationwide Series in 2011 but less than two months after his Daytona 500 triumph and cross-country victory tour, he was in a Charlotte hospital suffering from what team officials said was a reaction to an insect bite.

Bayne returned to race the following week at Talladega before suffering double vision, nausea and fatigue and was sent to the Mayo Clinic for tests. Bayne said no cause was found for what caused his symptoms. He sat out five Nationwide races, ending his hopes for a series crown.

Sponsorship woes last year further sidelined Bayne. He ran only six Nationwide races and 16 Cup races, leaving him idle many weekends.

“The only thing that gave me real patience was knowing that I had this season to look forward to,” Bayne said.

That’s a mature attitude for someone who turns 22 on Feb. 19, but it’s one thing to say it and another to mean it. While Bayne would have rather been racing, he tried to take advantage of the situation, racing a dirt late model and spending time with family.

“I realized last year, ‘Hey, for the next 10, 15, 20 years of my life I’m going to be at the race track every weekend, so I might as well try to enjoy it as much as I can,’ even though I missed [racing] so bad.”

Missing so many races the past two seasons could postpone car owner Jack Roush’s original plan of moving Bayne into a full-time Cup ride in 2014.

“That’s still a goal but it’s probably not as imperative as making sure he spends enough time in the Nationwide Series to do all the growth and development that he can benefit from before he moves on to Cup,” Roush said.

Then again, Bayne might only need this season in Nationwide. He’s taking over Ricky Stenhouse Jr.’s ride as Stenhouse moves to Cup. Bayne will have Stenhouse’s two-time defending Nationwide championship team, including crew chief Mike Kelley.

“Mike [Kelley] is probably one of the more sought after crew chiefs in the Nationwide Series with his success,” Stenhouse said. “I think he’ll make Trevor stay focused. I know he did for me. I think Trevor is in a great situation there.”

Bayne isn’t worried about expectations running for that team brings. He’s ready to race.

“When I got to the end of 2012, I was already looking forward to this season,” he said. “Normally, when you get to the end of the season you’re like, ‘All right, I’m ready for two months off and then I can get back at it.’ I think in October, I was ready to go to the racetrack and start. I think I’m fresher.

“I’m ready to go more than anybody … because I’ve had that time to sit back and wait on it and get my mind right and be ready to go racing again.”

March 3, 2013

The raucous student section at No. 2 Gonzaga’s arena had no doubt where the Zags should be ranked when The Associated Press’ Top 25 comes out on Monday.

“We’re No. 1! We’re No. 1!” the students shouted as the clock wound down in Gonzaga’s 81-52 victory over Portland on Saturday.

Coach Mark Few was a little more restrained, noting the polls are out of his control.

“It’s never happened here before,” Few said of a No. 1 ranking. “It would be an honor. If they think that highly of us we’ll take it.”

But a minute later Few also betrayed some amazement that the little Jesuit school from Spokane could reach the pinnacle of college basketball.

“At the end of the day it would be pretty cool for Gonzaga to be No. 1,” Few said. “My first year here we won four Division I games.”

Elias Harris scored 20 points and Kelly Olynyk added 15 points and 11 rebounds for Gonzaga (29-2, 16-0 West Coast), which had already clinched the West Coast Conference regular season title and the top seed in next weekend’s tournament. Gary Bell Jr. added 14 points.

Gonzaga, winner of 12 consecutive games since a last-second loss at Butler, has escaped the losses that have afflicted other teams at or near the top of the poll in recent weeks. That included a loss by top-ranked Indiana to Minnesota earlier this week that opened the door for the Bulldogs.

The Zags have never been ranked higher than their current No. 2 position. But because of their lightly regarded conference schedule, there is a chance a lower team could leapfrog them in the poll. Gonzaga’s only other loss was at home to Illinois in December.

Few noted Gonzaga’s 16-0 conference record is a first for the recently expanded WCC. And no Gonzaga team has ever won 30 games in a season.

But the goal is not to pile up numbers, he said.

“We want to go to the NCAA tournament and try to win the thing,” Few said.

Harris said he didn’t care if Gonzaga was ranked No. 1. He would prefer that Gonzaga continue to play as well as it has been playing into the postseason.

“Everything else is talk if you don’t play well,” Harris said.

Derrick Rodgers scored 10 points for Portland (11-20, 4-12), which has lost 18 straight to Gonzaga dating to 2003.

“They are a very good basketball team without many, any, weaknesses,” Portland coach Eric Reveno said. “Right now, given what’s going on, I think they should be No. 1.”

The game concluded the regular season for both teams. Gonzaga is virtually assured a 15th consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament.

This one was over quickly, as the Pilots were undone by poor shooting and Gonzaga’s dominating inside play.

Portland opened the game with three 3-pointers to take a 9-7 lead. But Gonzaga made three 3s during a 13-0 run for a 20-9 lead.

After Portland made its fourth 3-pointer, Gonzaga scored three straight baskets, punctuated by Harris’ dunk, for a 26-12 lead. Bell’s 3-pointer gave Gonzaga a 31-14 lead.

The teams traded baskets until Olynyk scored three times inside and Harris twice during an 11-0 Gonzaga run that made it 46-21.

Gonzaga led 46-27 at halftime, after shooting 61 percent and taking a huge 26-4 advantage on points in the paint. Harris had 13 points and seven rebounds in the first half. Portland shot just 30 percent in the first half, but made 7 of 13 3-pointers.

Olynyk opened the second half by scoring Gonzaga’s first three field goals for a 53-32 lead. Bell’s 3-pointer launched a 10-1 run for a 64-37 lead.

Gonzaga pushed the lead to 30 points with less than 9 minutes left and the Pilots did not threaten after that.

It was senior day as Gonzaga honored Harris, Mike Hart and Guy Landry Edi.

Gonzaga’s 29-2 start this season is the best in team history, topping the 28-2 record set in 2003-04. The Zags have the best winning percentage in the country and coach Mark Few has the highest winning percentage among active coaches with at least five years’ experience at 80 percent,

Gonzaga is 120-8 in the McCarthey Athletic Center since it opened in 2004.

March 2, 2013

Ryan Kelly had waited two months for the chance to help his Duke teammates reclaim the form that made them the nation’s top-ranked team.

He returned with a stunning performance that shook up No. 5 Miami and left his own Hall of Fame coach struggling for the right words.

The senior scored a career-high 36 points in his return from a foot injury that had sidelined him since January, helping the third-ranked Blue Devils beat the Hurricanes 79-76 on Saturday night in a matchup of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s top teams.

“I guess I was ready for it,” Kelly said. “That’s all I can say.”

Kelly knocked down 10 of 14 shots — including 7 of 9 3-pointers— for the Blue Devils (25-4, 12-4 ACC), who avenged a blowout road loss in January by grinding out a tough win in Cameron Indoor Stadium. He also went 9-for-12 from the foul line and pulled down seven rebounds in 32 minutes.

It left Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski joking to reporters that he was interested to read how they’d describe Kelly’s big night.

“I mean, me saying ‘spectacular’ or whatever doesn’t do his performance justice,” Krzyzewski said. “One for the ages. Probably as good a performance as any player has had — a Duke player has had — in Cameron.”

Kelly’s performance was the highlight of a game that certainly lived up to the teams’ lofty rankings and their status as the league’s best. Miami led by seven in the first half and by two at the break, while Duke never led by more than five until the final 3 minutes.

Quinn Cook added 15 points, including a 3-pointer that gave Duke a 10-point lead with 1:55 left.

But the Hurricanes (23-5, 14-2) made a frantic rally and missed two 3s in the final seconds to tie it. Shane Larkin came up short on the first over Kelly. Durand Scott ran down the rebound and fired a pass to the left corner to Rion Brown, whose final 3 clanged off the rim as the horn sounded.

Kelly’s season-high was 22 points and his career-best was 23 points before Saturday. He had missed 13 straight games with the right foot injury, though he had been gradually increasing his work in practice in recent days before going right back in the starting lineup Saturday.

“I just knew I was going to play my hardest,” Kelly said. “Honestly, though, more than anything it was just going to be whether I could hold up with my breathing. I haven’t played any games in a long time, and being in a game is a lot different from being in practice or anything you can do. But I think I held up all right.”

He missed a 3 on Duke’s first possession, but knocked one down 2½ minutes in and never looked rusty.

“Well, I thought we prepared for Ryan Kelly but obviously not for that Ryan Kelly,” Miami coach Jim Larranaga said. “He was sensational from start to finish.”

Miami had beaten Duke 90-63 in January and had already clinched at least a share of the ACC regular-season title with the Blue Devils’ loss at Virginia on Thursday night. Miami will win its first ACC crown outright by beating either Georgia Tech or Clemson at home this week.

But Saturday’s game was about more than just the league standings or the chance to avenge that blowout loss for the Blue Devils. Rather, this was their chance to reclaim some momentum for March with Kelly’s return.

If Shane Larkin has been on a sports fan’s radar, it’s mostly because he’s the son of Baseball Hall of Fame shortstop Barry Larkin. After his breakout game against North Carolina this weekend, it’s time to recognize him as one of college basketball’s rising stars.

Miami can be an afterthought in the tradition-rich ACC, but the Hurricanes are a top-10 team this season and the sophomore point guard is one of the chief reasons why. On a nationally-televised game Feb. 9, Larkin dropped 18 points and nine assists on the Tar Heels as Miami smacked UNC 87-61. For the season, he’s averaging 13 points, four rebounds and four assists per game.

What’s even more impressive is his long-range accuracy. The sharpshooter has been averaging a blistering 43 percent from behind the arc (he had five against North Carolina).

The Hurricanes (18-3) are having one of the best seasons in program history as Miami has reached the program’s highest ranking (No. 8) and seems poised for a run in March. Larkin’s defense has also been a boon to the Hurricanes, as he averages more than two steals per game and is regarded as one of the best defenders in the conference.

While both Larkin and Miami are having banner seasons, don’t expect Larkin to jump ship any time soon. He’s heating up but still hasn’t generated much chatter around NBA scouts just yet. He is a little undersized (5 foot 11-inches) and has trouble finishing around the rim occasionally. He will need all four years to convince scouts to spend a draft pick on him but it won’t take him that long to become a great college point guard.

He may fully make that jump this season and if he keeps Miami near the top of the ACC over the next few seasons, there won’t be many people who don’t know who Shane Larkin is.

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo admits he’s disappointed his team has lost two straight, but he’s not about say it’s the beginning of the end for the ninth-ranked Spartans.

After losses last week to No. 1 Indiana at home and on the road against No. 16 Ohio State, there are many questions surrounding the program, specifically the play of Keith Appling.

However, Izzo was quick to point out other teams around the nation are in a much tougher spot than Michigan State, which has lost two straight to ranked teams and been in each game this season with chance to win in the final minutes.

“I’m not as frustrated as our fans or other people,” Izzo said at his weekly news conference Tuesday. “It’s a joke, if I can be blunt about it.”

As Michigan State (22-6, 11-4 Big Ten) gets some time this week to prepare for its matchup with No. 4 Michigan (23-4, 10-4) on Sunday, Izzo is concerned too much of the pressure is being put on Appling.

The junior guard struggled in the two losses, going a combined 2-for-14 and turning the ball over seven times.

“I would not consider this any reason to panic,” Izzo said. “It was disappointing, but I’m more concerned with making sure everybody doesn’t heap everything on Keith. Other guys were supposed to do their jobs (against Ohio State) that didn’t and there were adjustments I didn’t make.

Izzo said he planned to meet with Appling again later on Tuesday but reiterated that Appling is not hurt.

Gratz was the top performer among cornerbacks at the bench press. With 22 reps, Gratz and James Taylor of Boise State were the only cornerbacks to bench more than 17 times. Gratz also finished in the top 10 among cornerbacks in the vertical jump (fifth at 38 inches) and the three-cone drill (third at 6.70 seconds).

CBS ranks Gratz as the 16th-best cornerback in the Draft and projects that he will be selected in the fourth or fifth round.

Orthopedic surgeon James Andrews said Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III is “way ahead of schedule” in his recovery from the reconstruction of his right knee in January. But Andrews said his goal is to do what’s best for Griffin and his career – instead of rushing him back for the start of the season.

Andrews – regarded as one of the nation’s top orthopedic surgeons – also is employed by the Redskins and stands on their sidelines for every game.

He made the comments in an appearance Friday on the NFL Network.

“We have him well on his way. He is an unbelievable athlete, as you well know. His recovery is way ahead of schedule so far,” Andrews said in the interview. “We don’t have to do much but try to hold him back, if you want to know the truth. Our whole mode for him, though, is to do what is best for his career, not necessarily what is best for the first game next season. So all of that has to be put on hold and let him get well.”

Last week, shortly after he tweeted the link to a new Adidas commercial that ended with the line “All in for Week 1,” Griffin softened his stance, conceding that although he hopes to return for the season’s first game, he understands that he can’t jeopardize his career. He added that only God, Andrews and the team’s medical staff will determine when he could return to the field.

Andrews, who had declined multiple interview requests since the surgery to reconstruct the ACL in Griffin’s right knee and repair the torn LCL and meniscus in the same knee, echoed that more cautious, yet still optimistic school of thought.

The Vikings’ Adrian Peterson’s speedy recovery, which featured a 2,000-yard season after he tore his ACL on Dec. 24, 2011, is often cited in the same discussions on the timeline for Griffin’s return. But it’s worth noting that Peterson isn’t the first player to tear his ACL and return to action.

Back on Jan. 8, 2006, then-Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer tore his ACL in the playoffs versus Pittsburgh. But he returned to the field for the third preseason game of the 2007 season – seven months after his surgery – went on to play all 16 games that year and threw for a career-high 4,131 yards and 26 touchdowns. Palmer is primarily a stationary quarterback who doesn’t rely on his legs to scramble as Griffin does. But it does show that such a comeback is within the realm of possibility.

Short-track fans at Daytona International Speedway and a national television audience were treated to a dramatic late-race duel between Kyle Larson and C.E. Falk in the NASCAR All-American Tour Late Model race on Monday night. Larson won the race but controversy raged to kick off the two-day Battle at the Beach short track event at the World Center of Racing.

Larson trailed Falk with six laps to go and appeared to make his move too soon, getting under Falk and passing him off the exit of turn two. Falk immediately ducked under Larson and retook the point, going into turns three and four. Larson closely trailed Falk until the last lap when, using the lap car of Trey Gibson as a pic, he got behind Falk and turned him before the start/finish line.

Larson crossed the line first and Falk scrambled to finish third, just behind the surging Ben Rhodes who led the most laps and beat Falk to the checkered flag. Falk had every right to be furious but was surprisingly calm following the race.

“Look, I’m not a 15-year-old kid anymore,” Falk said. “I’m 25 years old and I want to be in this sport for a long time. I can’t get there by acting like a spoiled brat. I had a moment to vent when I walked over to turn 1 and that was it. When you have the cameras on you like this, you need to be a professional. Kids were watching this race, especially on Speed on a Monday night, and they’re looking for someone to look up to.”

Ultimately, Falk believes there wasn’t much more he could have done. He wishes Larson hadn’t turned him but, on the last lap at a short track, Falk said that anything goes.

“I was staying on the brakes as long as I could,” Falk said. “I’ve been short track racing for a long time and on the last lap, when you’re two car-lengths ahead, you’re pretty much free game up front — you’re just a sitting duck… I just tried to protect the bottom best I could and tried to cut the corner and get around that tire barrier but he got into me once, thought I would be OK, and the wheels were just spinning.

“He got into me that last time and he turned me at the line. I wish he hadn’t done that but on the last lap, it’s anything goes.”

Larson admits that he was too aggressive at the end – dirty even – but did what he had to do to win the trophy, a replica of those handed to the winner of the Grand National races held on beach circuit in NASCAR’s youth.

“I don’t do a lot of short track racing,” Larson said. “But every video I’ve ever seen of it, the second-place driver wins in this scenario. I did what I think C.E. would have done to me if the positions were reversed.”

Both drivers had used up most of their brakes at the end of the race, with Larson saying he had to lean back into the seat just to put pressure on his brake pads. Decreased brakes forced the drivers to let off the throttle early to get a better entry and thus resulted in some of the contact between the two at the end.

“I hit the center of his bumper and got up underneath him and just turned him around,” Larson said. “I feel bad for him but we were coming to the finish line.”
