Ryan Cleary, the Essex teenager accused of hacking into the website of the
UK’s Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca), has been remanded in custody.

The 19-year-old, who faces five charges under the Criminal Law and Computer
Misuse Acts, appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court for a brief hearing.

He spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and his address.

The teen did not enter a plea and no application for bail was made.

Cleary’s case was adjourned for three days to allow police to continue
questioning him.

He is also alleged to have attacked the websites of music bodies the British Phonographic
Industry
and the International Federation of the Phonographic
Industry
.

Before his appearance in court, Cleary’s mother Rita had to battle her way
through the gathered paparazzi to reach the building.

Mr Cleary was arrested in a dawn raid at his home in
Essex

Her son was arrested at the family’s home in Wickford, Essex, on Monday as
part of a Scotland Yard and FBI probe into LulzSec.

The group of
hackers
has claimed responsibility for hacking attempts on Soca, the US Senate and
the CIA, yet denied Cleary is a member of the group.

The teenager is charged with conspiring with other people on or before June
20 to create a remotely controlled network of zombie computers, known as a
‘botnet’.

The botnet, it is claimed, was created to carry out distributed denial of
service (DDoS) attacks, where websites are flooded with traffic to make them
crash.

He is accused of launching a DDoS attack on Soca’s website on June 20.

He is also alleged to have carried out similar attacks against the British
Phonographic Industry’s website on October 29 last year and the International
Federation of the Phonographic Industry’s website on November 28 last year.

It is understood that investigations are continuing into other alleged
hacking attacks in the UK and abroad.
