IT should have been a proud day in the short life of Kevin Quintal, who was due to accept an award for coming first in his kindergarten class.
Instead it was a day of grief and tragedy for his family when the “perfect” five-year-old was struck by a car and killed as he walked to school with his mother and two younger siblings yesterday.
Kevin was accidentally hit as he crossed Vivienne St, Kingsgrove, at 8.40am. Neighbours said they heard his mother Marilyn’s screams immediately after the incident. Police are investigating the possibility Kevin had run ahead of his mother.Kevin’s aunt Maria Vieria said yesterday was supposed to be a special day as he was due to be presented with an achievement certificate by his teacher. “He was so excited to go to school today,” Ms Vieria wept.
“He was receiving an award for being such a great student … (but) he didn’t even make it there.”
Kevin and his mother usually take the car to Kingsgrove Public School, about 300m away. But for reasons Ms Vieria could not explain, they decided to walk instead.
“He was such a beautiful baby, full of life,” Ms Vieria said. “He was a great little boy, he was so clever, from a very young age – it’s not fair.”
Kevin’s father Victor was too distraught to speak, while Marilyn was treated for shock at St George Hospital. She was later released but Ms Vieria said she remained inconsolable.
“She’s just crying and asking ‘why Kevin’,” she said.
The driver of the Audi, a 42-year-old woman from the Kingsgrove area, was also treated for shock. Witnesses wept as they described the accident.
“I saw the kid down. I heard the mother, she was crying, screaming,” said Nick Tserpes, 70.
“Everybody was just crying, I was crying too. It was just terrible.”
Crash investigators remained at the scene for several hours examining the Audi and a pram.
Chief Inspector Mark Cook said the accident was a tragedy.
“I’ve seen too many of these over my career. My personal view is that it’s distressing for everyone involved – including police,” he said.
“I’m told the driver was extremely distressed and distraught.”
Parents at Kingsgrove Public School arrived early yesterday afternoon to pick up their children. A note from school principal Bill Bird was handed out to parents, warning them to take care walking to school, while counselling services were made available.
Each letter of the first name rules 9 years of life. The first 27 years of life are ruled by the sum of the first three letters of the name.
11 (K is the 11th letter of the alphabet) + 5 (e is the 5th letter of the alphabet) + 22 (v is the 22nd letter of the alphabet) = 38
So the number 38 ruled his first twenty-seven years of life.
38 = Mother. Marilyn Vieria. Take care walking to school.
