Dixie Virginia Carter, her full name, was born on May 25, 1939 in McLemoresville, Tennessee, was an American actress who appeared in films, television and on stage. She was best-known for her long-running role in the sitcom Designing Women that ran from 1986 until 1993. She was nominated for the Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for Desperate Housewives in  the year 2007.

Ms. Carter spent many of her early years in Memphis, in the southwest corner of Tennessee. She attended college at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and Southwestern at Memphis also known as Rhodes College. She was a graduate of Memphis State which is now University of Memphis with a degree in English. She was also a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority in her college and in 1959, Carter won the 1st runner-up in the Miss Tennessee beauty pageant.

Carter died on April 10, 2010 at the age of 70 with no clear information on the real cause of her death. Her husband, Hal Holbrook, whom she lived with in Los Angeles, CA refused to disclose the cause her death. He just say in his written statement, “This has been a terrible blow to our family,” “We would appreciate everyone understanding that this is a private family tragedy.”

Death due to cancer

The 70-year-old actress died yesterday in a Houston hospital. While most major media report it to be of unstated causes, the Wikipedia page reports “Her death in Houston, Texas was announced by her husband, the actor Hal Holbrook, who stated the cause as complications from endometrial cancer.”.
