Keselowski was running second alongside Kenseth when the race restarted a final time on lap 193 (the race went six laps beyond the scheduled distance of 188 laps).
“I had this whole plan if I ever had a situation of when I was leading here,” said the Penske Racing driver, who has two wins this season. “I thought about it, dreamed about it. I knew the move I wanted to pull, and it worked. The guy running second should have the advantage.
“Now everyone’s seen it, and they know. It was the right move, and I’m glad it worked.”
Dale Earnhardt Jr. was ninth, the highest-finishing Hendrick Motorsports driver as the team fell short again in pursuit of its 200th Cup victory.
Pole-sitter Jeff Gordon finished 33rd, the latest in a series of poor finishes by the Hendrick driver despite having a fast No. 24 Chevrolet.
“This is one of the most bizarre years this team has ever gone through,” Gordon said. “It’s almsot comical. I want to laugh about it, but I want to cry too. It’s just ridiculous we can’t catch a break.
“We’re bring just unbelievable race cars to the racetrack.”
Gordon said NASCAR needed to look at changing its cooling rules before the next restrictor-plate race at Daytona International Speedway in July.
“This temps thing is kind of a joke,” Gordon said. “They’re going to need to fix that. When you can’t race because the temps in a regular pack are an issue, we have to address that.”
