Kasey Kahne, Rick Hendrick

May 27, 2012          9:05 p.m.

The important numbers for Kasey Kahnewere 1 and 300 on a long and muggy Sunday night.

First victory as a driver for Hendrick Motorsports in his 300th Cup start.

Kahne didn’t have the strongest car for much of the race — that would be Greg Biffle, who led 108 of the first 191 laps in the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

But the longest race of the NASCAR season is a long grind, and Kahne’s car had the most get-go when it counted, as he held off Denny Hamlin.

Kyle Busch was third, followed by Biffle and Brad Keselowski.

Kahne probably had a little bit of extra motivation following a celebration party honoring the 200th Cup victory for owner Rick Hendrick on Tuesday night. He wasn’t onstage as drivers for the organization were introduced because at the time, he had not won a race for Hendrick.

“I was excited to be part of the 200th celebration,” Kahne said. “Being there Tuesday night and thinking about the history that lies at Hendrick Motorsports and how much Linda [Hendrick] and Rick have done is pretty awesome. It’s great to win a race tonight and get the 201st win.”

Said Busch: “The pressure is off him. He’s won at Hendrick Motorsports.”

The race had a monotonous drone to it most of it the night, with only a handful of cautions for minor things and no big-bang crashes.

One of the most exciting moments came when 2012 Cup champion Tony Stewart spun out on pit road and did a sideways burnout to avoid hitting Keselowski. The moment lasted only a few seconds, but it was an incredible piece of driving.

Stewart and the other 42 drivers had to deal with evolving weather conditions, as it was hot and muggy to start the race with temperatures in the mid-80s. It was expected to dip into the mid-60s as the night wore on in the 400-lap, 600-mile race.

“Well, when it is hot it slows down a little bit in all reality,” Stewart said before the race. “I mean the cooler temperatures will run quicker. I like it when it gets hot and slick like this. Hopefully, we will have a pretty clear weekend that the track will soak up a lot of heat, because overnight it doesn’t just go all the way down. If you have consecutive days where it is really nice, it will keep that heat in the track and hopefully make it a little slicker than it was last week.”

Biffle, the leader in points, looked good in the first half of the race, but his car underperformed as the race went deeper into the night.

Reflective of his success this season, he has already led more laps in 2012 than he did in all of 2011.

“We want to win the Coca-Cola 600,” Biffle said before the race. “We’ve got a great piece. I can’t wait to get on the track with it. This is the car I won Texas with and it’s a long race where anything can happen. We’re targeting, like always, finishing up front and finish in the top five — only two positions between Matt [Kenseth] and I. I’m sure at some point we’ll both lead a lap, so that will be one point, but it is super tight at the front of the field.

“We’re not going to worry about the points lead. We’re going to worry about our car and doing the best we can. If we give up the lead, then the important part is to make the Chase and be leading it after Homestead.”
